or the 6th year, St. Nick made a stop at the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital to take free photos with all the furry four-legged friends. The annual event was held in conjunction with the last day of the food drive for the Meals on Wheels for Companion Pets Program. More than 100 humans and their beloved canines and felines came out to the anticipated holiday celebration. An abundance of wish lists were given to the big jolly man in the red suit while photos were taken, and pet food was donated. Every dog, cat, parent, and child took home images of their memorable moment. Boxer Friends Rescue also came out to provide shade and some fun seasonal props for the photo stars. The nonprofit organization is comprised of
100% volunteers who are devoted to helping pure breed Boxers in need in the South Florida area. They rely solely on adoption fees, fundraising events, and generous donations. Meals on Wheels South Florida’s Meals on Wheels for Companion Pets Program was started when volunteers began to notice clients sharing their meals with their pets. Seniors on a restricted budget can have a difficult time meeting their own needs and often the needs of their companion animals can be neglected. Through the support of volunteers and donations from events like these, pet food is delivered once a month to these loyal companion animals.
“Now in our 6th year of partnership with Meals on Wheels South Florida, we could not be prouder of our community and our combined commitment to support the animals that support us,” exclaimed Dr. James Herrington, DVM VCAHAH Medical Director. The results from the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital were astounding with 2400 lbs. of food and over $1000 in donations. These donations will support the pets of homebound seniors in South Florida for the next few months and the money will go to the purchase of food thereafter. “The quantity of food used monthly by Broward Meals on Wheels for Pets is around 800 lbs. alone for the southern portion of Broward County,” said Bobbi Arnold, Co- Chair of Broward Meals on Wheels for Pets. “The food collected during this drive will go a long way to help feed our client’s furry family members.” To learn more about VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital and the organizations they support, please call 954-920-3556 or visit www.vcahollywood.com.

Other artwork on the traveling exhibit was created by students in the Warriors of the Rainbow Sustainability Club at Beachside Montessori Village. Surfrider volunteers donned tutus created from single-use plastic bags. “I’m very excited to find a fun and creative way to raise awareness of the impact plastic pollution has on our ocean and local beaches. We hope that seeing all the garbage that we’ve pulled off Hollywood Beach will help motivate people to rethink their singleuse plastic consumption,” said Cat Uden, Surfrider Foundation Chapter Chair. these items break apart into tiny micro-plastics that remain in the ocean forever. Plastics are then consumed by marine life and end up in the food chain. Additionally, these plastics are made from fossil fuels, so the fewer disposable plastics used, the better it is for the planet. et’s start by looking at 2017’s numbers: First, residential and commercial property values are up, way up. Citywide, we enjoyed a 15.6% year over year increase in taxable property value. We went from being a $13.2 billion city to a $15.3 billion city, in one year; the greatest city value appreciation of all the cities in Broward County. My goal is to get us to be an $18 billion city. Doing so will enable our city government to have a better capacity to fund continuing improvements to city services, city public spaces and city infrastructure. We are on our way! In 2017, we issued over 13,000 building permits, so many that the City’s old Building Department systems are having a hard time keeping up. 2017’s building permits brought in improvements valued at $365M, with the majority of permits for smaller projects, which is important because it indicates that broad reinvestment taking place in neighborhoods throughout the city, adding to the longevity of our housing stock and helping to sustain the residential tax base. As for business and employment in Hollywood, our primary employment drivers continue to be are tourism, healthcare, and the service sector, and all grew in 2017, with unemployment at record lows - under 4%. In 2017, we added over 2,000 new jobs, in hospitality, construction, retail, healthcare, specialty manufacturing, the service industry and other sectors. Most notable was bringing in over 1,000 new jobs with the addition of Chewy.com’s relocation of its customer service center to Hollywood Hills Plaza. We also saw the groundbreaking of an exciting new 52,000 sq. ft. advanced aerospace component manufacturing facility being built by Sintavia at our Port 95 Commerce Park north of Griffin Road. When completed, Sintavia’s new facility will create 130 high paying, highly skilled jobs. That’s in addition to Quantum Marine’s new 30,000 sf LEED certified facility that opened at Port 95. Business Tax Receipts indicate 2,304 new businesses registered in Hollywood in 2017, with a record total of 12,834 businesses now registered in our city. A lot is happening, and yet driving through city commercial corridors such as Federal Highway, Dixie Highway and State Road 7, we can all see that so much more opportunity for new investment continues to be had. In this regard, know that in 2017, we enacted new zoning to facilitate reinvestment in these corridors, and that the City’s newly organized Department of Marketing, Communications and Economic Development will be hard at work, rolling out an effort to attract additional investment that will continue the City’s strong economic momentum through 2018 and beyond. Lots of investments of all sizes are already in the pipeline from west Hollywood and all the way to the beach. We’ve spent a lot of time visioning putting plans in place these past twelve months, and for Hollywood, 2018 and beyond is the time for execution. So, I invite you to join us in 2018, join us in boosting Hollywood and marketing Hollywood. Help us amplify the buzz. Invite your friends and business associates to see the opportunities of our city and to join us in our pursuit of making Hollywood an even more welcoming, vibrant, sustainable, destination city. Here’s to a great 2018! Josh Levy, Mayor

Here We Go Again…Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
superstition going back to the late 1800s by the Dutch states that if a groundhog sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat into its den because winter will occur for 6 more weeks. If it does not see a shadow due to cloudy skies, spring is on its way. The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held each year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where crowds have been known to exceed 40,000 as they wait in anticipation for Punxsutawney Phil to forecast the upcoming weather. However, the popular time-honored tradition will also be celebrated for the 14th year on Hollywood Beach. Although South Floridians don’t have to worry about cold temperatures, the annual event brings out those who want to honor the day and participate in the legendary Groundhog Swim. The event will take place on Friday, February 2nd, 2018 from 6:30-8:00 a.m. at Ocean Alley Restaurant and Beach Bar, located at 900 N. Broadwalk (at A1A & Indiana Street) on the worldfamous Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, with the swim taking place at 7:30 a.m. No Groundhog Day bash would be complete without a special appearance by Punxsutawney Phil and live coverage of Groundhog Day from Punxsutawney, PA.,
the weather capital of the world. The event culminates with some of the heartiest souls taking a traditional dip in the Atlantic Ocean, which barely breaks 80 degrees by midday this time of year. A $12 donation includes breakfast and a free souvenir T-shirt for swimmers. Shirts are available for non-swimmers at an additional $12 while quantities last. Proceeds will benefit the Hollywood Beach Lifeguard Competition Team to help cover travel expenses for the national competition in Virginia Beach this fall. “It’s a great way to start the day for a great cause. The team trains hard all year to represent Hollywood in the national lifeguard competition and needs support for travel expenses. You either get Groundhog Day or you don’t. Sure, it’s silly but so is life sometimes. A hearty breakfast, a dip in the ocean, and a Hollywood Beach sunrise will give a new outlook on things,” said Jeff Hansen, Event Co-Sponsor (Cahoots Newspaper) and Member of the Beach Bum Chapter of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. “The first year we had 8 people and we now serve 150 breakfasts, and had 110 swimmers last year. We have a dedicated group of believers that a groundhog can predict the weather. Punxsutawney Phil Rocks!”

Guests were also treated to a presentation by actress and television host, Iris Acker. Fort Lauderdale resident Maria Orsini was recognized as the 2017-18 “Volunteer of the Year” for donating 970 hours during the season, which was the most by any volunteer. The prize package included tickets to Jersey Boys, a gift certificate to Marti’s New River Bistro, and a gift basket filled with wine, snacks, and Broadway show souvenirs.

Hollywood Hills High is Ready for Some Football! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
here was no better way to start a school day before the holidays than with a surprise from the Miami Dolphins. The Hollywood Hills High School football team had no idea that they would be receiving an unexpected visit from Miami’s very own NFL team on a typical Wednesday morning. Dolphins players Isiah Ford, Malcolm Lewis, Raekwon McMillan and Eric Smith, Dolphins Youth Programs Manager and alumnus Troy Drayton and cheerleaders Holly and Jodi were all in attendance for the event along with a truck full of equipment. The Spartans were ecstatic to be receiving the donated equipment which included running sleds, foam rollers, heavy bags, medicine balls, ropes, and hurdles. They were able to interact with the AFC East football players and thank them for the generous gifts. “It’s an incredible opportunity for us to give back,” McMillan said. “These guys, they go out and they put in hard work, and we’re trying to show them that giving respect to your coach and paying your dues gets you the opportunity to have things like this happen for your program.” Additionally, the Spartans football team had the opportunity to visit a Dolphins practice, meet with current players, and enjoy a lunch provided by Wendy’s. Prior to the Dolphins vs. Patriots Monday Night Football matchup on December 11th, the Hollywood Hills squad was featured as the team of the week. This privilege allowed them to stand on the field for the national anthem. “It is a tremendous honor to have the Miami Dolphins donate much needed equipment to our football program. Both our players and coaches experienced a team that is doing more than just talking about giving back to their community. Sara Lunn (L) Vannessa Rodriguez (R)
While the equipment will make us a more talented team on the field, the lessons that the players shared with us will last a lifetime,” said Hollywood Hills Head Football Coach Brandon Graham. Furthermore, the Hollywood Hills team participated in the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) Leadership Program. The RISE Leadership Program is designed to empower sports administrators, coaches and athletes to be leaders in discussing and addressing matters of racism, prejudice, diversity and inclusivity within their teams, schools and communities. The multifaceted program increases awareness, builds skills and creates safe spaces to have difficult conversations. Participants learn about the history of race and sports, the power of sports to drive change and how they can become leaders in improving race relations. Founded in 2015 by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, RISE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to harnessing the unifying power of sports to improve race relations and drive social progress.

Facelift Techniques BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS
L
ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, and Feather lift. The names may change, but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As skin ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastic, which results in increased skin laxity. This, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways - lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination, depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle is tightened and the excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini or short-scar facelift can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow, then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

P
reparing for school, whether it be in preschool or high school, plays an important role in fostering a strong foundation for a child’s education. Such preparation has a positive influence in every way. Sure, it’s important to have all the notebooks and markers from the back-to-school shopping list stowed inside backpacks for the start of the term, but inspiring a positive attitude about learning can define how your children see their time at school and their promise within. The task of inspiring enthusiasm about learning in your child - from toddler to teen - can prove to be very difficult. It calls for active participation from both parent and child, as well as applying strategies that will further help a child embrace talent, interests and the many opportunities to be discovered at school. Several methods can encourage and motivate an interested mind: ▸▸ Starting conversations and debates at home that make kids think – These discussions can focus on almost anything - current events, trivia, media - from emotional to fact-based topics. Such dialogue allows the student to develop skills while instilling confidence and interest in participating in these kinds of discussions at school. ▸▸ Small and simple activities that are enchanting for your child’s mind – Supporting daily reading, playing video or board games, or sparking imagination through creative activities all nurture a positive view of learning and education.

While these methods seem small, the results can be tremendous and influence the choices children make at school and for the rest of their lives as they grow. It is important to remember that students spend more of their day at school than they do at home. Choosing a school that inspires your child to discover passions and maximize potential is the most important part of the preparation process. Developing a lifelong love for learning starts at home and is nurtured at school. Alexandra Fincheltub is a high school senior at Scheck Hillel Community School with her eye on college for the fall. Stay Hydrated The discs between the vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck) are comprised of approximately 80 percent water at birth. However, as one ages the ratio of water decreases, which can cause the discs to lose height, the spine to come out of alignment, and the pressure on the spine to increase. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs, therefore eliminating neck pain. ▸▸ Set a daily water goal. Women typically need 2.2 liters, while men need 3 liters. ▸▸ Keep a reusable water bottle nearby at all times. ▸▸ Create new daily habits such as drinking a full glass of water when waking up each day.

Limit Hand-Held Phone Use A common habit many don’t even think about, but do all day long is cradle a phone in their neck while talking. This results in extra strain on the cervical spine. Also, many add additional stress on the neck by staring down at their phones for an extended period of time. This habit can, in fact, place up to 60 pounds of pressure on both the neck muscles and ligaments. ▸▸ Use a Bluetooth or hands-free headset. ▸▸ Hold the phone near eye level when texting or reading. ▸▸ Limit phone use when possible.
Apply Heat Therapy Good old-fashioned advice is to not overlook the benefits of heat therapy. Applying a heating pad or a hot water bottle for 20 minutes may produce the following benefits: ▸▸ An increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles encourages healing in the neck. ▸▸ The stimulation of sensory receptors in the skin hinder the transmission of pain signals to the brain. ▸▸ The stretching of soft tissues around the spine will decrease stiffness in the neck. It is suggested to try these tips even with severe neck pain, as they can provide even a little bit of relief from chronic symptoms. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year.
