We Are All Eagles Now
• Burial
ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more.

Temple Solel is Making the World a Better Place BY BEVERLY PERKINS
P
erforming good deeds and random acts of kindness is the perfect way to start a new year, and that is exactly what Temple Solel did at their 11th annual Mitzvah Day at Mizell-Johnson State Park, formerly known as John U. Lloyd Park. Tikkun Olam is a Jewish concept which defines acts of kindness performed to perfect or repair the world, and to assist those who may be at a disadvantage. Although Temple Solel in Hollywood always has ongoing projects to help others, they declared a specific day eleven years ago to gather congregants of all ages to fulfill the action of mitzvoh (performing good deeds). Since its inception, “Mitzvah Day” has accomplished numerous charitable efforts at the synagogue, in the community, and around the world. This year approximately 175 volunteers came out to the Osprey Pavilion at the state park in Dania Beach to plant sea oats and other coastal plants to deter further beach erosion. They also removed invasive plant species and refurbished several facilities, including painting
the education center and painting a decorative mural. The ambitious group also cleaned up the popular beach which sustained considerable damage from Hurricane Irma. Those not on beach patrol decorated and filled 75 backpacks with items to help those children undergoing chemotherapy. Another group created tote bags from recycled t-shirts to fill with toiletries for homeless children at the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood. Additionally, recycling bins were made for the Temple, and others participated in educational programs to learn about sea turtles, native plants, and plastics in the ocean. The incredible morning was completed with a Tu B’Shevat (new year for the trees) seder since the celebratory day was approaching. At the helm of all the wonderful projects is Stephanie Jofe. She has been organizing
“Mitzvah Day” from the very beginning. Seven years ago, she knew it was time to take their “show” on the road and help organizations in the community with larger needs than their own. “The Tikkun Olam Committee at Temple Solel seeks to apply our Jewish values of tzedakah and mitzvot, which loosely translate into generosity and good deeds, to help our larger community. Every year we help refurbish a communitybased facility that is in need of a facelift. In the past we have assisted a food pantry, a clothing bank, a low-income preschool, a children’s hospital playground, two schools and homes for multiply disabled children and adults and two public parks. It gives our members great joy to make our community a nicer place to live,” said Jofe. Co-Tikkun Olam Committee Chair. “Maybe other organizations will see this and do something similar, or more people will join us. We have done a lot the last year to become the ‘Green’ synagogue of Broward County.” To find out more about Temple Solel’s Tikkun Olam Committee, or to ask for assistance for your organization, please email Stephanie Jofe at shrinkmom@kidbones.com.
Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie
I
n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create
an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. The Hollywood Women’s Club is Ready & Roaring for their Annual Fundraiser BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
his month the GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club will hold their annual spring fundraising event on March 23rd from 6:30pm-9:30pm. In honor of their 96th anniversary, they are throwing another “Gatsby-esque” party at their National Historic Clubhouse which will be transformed into a 1920s classic cocktail speakeasy reminiscent of the time when the historic structure was built. The 2018 committee is chaired by club members, Meg Donoghue and Shelly DeMarco. Guests are invited to come dressed in their best era fashions to the Speakeasy II event. Flappers and gangsters donning boas and beads and cigars and cigarettes will be greeted by antique cars. This will set the scene and provide a perfect photo opportunity to start the evening. Guests will have the opportunity to take silly selfies at the photo booth and play classic games such as the Ring Toss, Lucky’s Lost Loot, and Spin the Wheel to win sought after bottles of wine or liquor. Another highlight of the evening is a live auction featuring two American Airlines tickets and so much more. Era entertainment will be provided by pianist Fritzie Gaccione while signature drinks are served at the bar. Provisions will be provided by Club members including finger sandwiches, deviled eggs, pasta salad, meatballs, and an array of desserts.

“This is our 2nd Annual Speakeasy and we have lots of fun games and activities for attendees. You can get a key that might open an antique chest and win what’s inside! Or visit the Cigar Bar and relax with a drink!” exclaimed Donoghue. Tickets include entry into two games, great food, beer, and wine. Pricing is $65 per person until March 18th and $75 per person March 19th until the event. For those interested, an additional $20 per person will be added for the Capone & Company Games Experience. “Last years’ event was sold out! Proceeds from the event will support the Club’s many community service projects as well as the ongoing restoration of the Clubhouse which is focused on accessibility, safety and functionality. Our goal is to raise $500,000. To date we have raised $350,000 thanks to a $300,000 anonymous gift received this summer,” stated Carol Fitzgerald, GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club President. “This historic gift to the Club will allow us to include updating windows to hurricane windows and replace the front of the Clubhouse.” “For 96 years the Club has served the Hollywood Community where the needs are the greatest. With over 105 members, the Clubhouse is not only our home but has served the community throughout the years,” added Fitzgerald. Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY
M
arch is here and lots of activity is already taking place for 2018. At city hall, spring marks the start of budget planning for the upcoming 2018-2019 fiscal year. Lots of number-crunching will be going on to ensure Hollywood continues to deliver topquality services within the revenue parameters that our budget staff anticipates. At this time of the year, there is lots going on in Tallahassee. The Florida Legislature is in session till March 9th, and our City is busy advocating for state funding of the Port Everglades sand-by-pass project, beach renourishment, septicto-sewer conversion, maintaining levels for senior services, a recreational boating designation for the Lakes, improved school security and more. We are opposing bills looking to strip cities of the right to regulate short-term rental and partyhouse businesses impacting the quiet enjoyment of our single-family neighborhoods. There is a lot that our staff, elected officials and Tallahassee lobbying team is monitoring and working on, and updates will be forthcoming. Locally, State Road 7 has new zoning creating a new form of what new businesses and residences will look like along that transit-oriented corridor. Improvements to our parks, roads, alleys, sidewalks, street lighting, flood control, police and fire facilities are being evaluated. We have active consultant studies that will bring back recommendations for improved beach parking – for beach visitors, residents, businesses and their employees. Major roadway improvement projects are underway on A1A and Hollywood Boulevard. We are also making progress in streamlining our building permit process. The Development Services Department is improving its systems and technology for greater speed and user-friendliness for issuance of homeowner and commercial building permits. Hollywood’s renaissance depends on the Development Services Department’s capacity to make way for improvements. Finally, I’d like to take a minute to highlight Parkside, the charming neighborhood located just south of Downtown Hollywood. We have a great opportunity to turn Parkside into an arts village, to compliment the art and culture scene that continues to grow downtown. There is a lot of buzz going on downtown, with new restaurants and new residential projects under construction or in the planning stages. The new downtown Publix opened on February 22nd, as part of the Circ Residences and Circ Hotel that will soon be open across from the Arts Park at Young Circle. Besides new shops, restaurants, housing and bringing more cultural and music events to the ArtsPark, I am actively working on attracting a large university or college(s) to join Barry University downtown. Downtown Hollywood can really flourish as an urban student village unlike no other in South Florida. The lifestyle opportunities our city offers are endless. Whether it’s the beach, downtown, or our established residential neighborhoods or business districts east to west, there is lots to celebrate and lots to freshen-up. I am excited about all that we are doing to continuously improve our city, and 2018 will be an important year to move Hollywood forward. I wish everyone a very happy spring season.

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling
Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!
Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.

There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping
Video Game Olympics
The Beach
Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.
Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS
T
PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE 20th Annual
he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch,” no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
How Does Dementia Affect Executive Functioning? BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
A
person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party. The Facts on Spinal Stenosis BY FELIX M. RAMIREZ, D.O.
T
he spinal column has open spaces that create passageways for the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. However, a serious condition occurs when the spinal column narrows thus putting pressure on the spinal column and nerves. This painful compression of the nerves is known as spinal stenosis. The pressure that occurs can cause pain, weakness and numbness, and is most common in the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine since the spinal column can narrow at any point from the head to the tailbone, including the center of the spine. This is where nerves branch out from the spinal cord, and in spaces between the vertebrae. The cause of spinal stenosis is commonly caused by excess growth of the bone around the spinal nerves which is the result of osteoarthritis. It can also result from a dislocation or a fracture of the vertebral bone, or by soft tissue intruding into the spine’s open spaces. Other culprits are herniated discs, tumors, and thickened spinal ligaments which press against the spinal nerves. ▸ Some conditions and illnesses tend to affect mostly men or women, but spinal stenosis does not discriminate. Both men and women may be affected by the condition. The primary cause is arthritis and aging, and equal numbers of men and women experience spinal stenosis. ▸ Patients over 50 years of age are the typical candidates for the condition. Very few patients under the age of 30 are diagnosed with spinal stenosis. If so, the cause is usually trauma to the spine from an external force, such as an auto accident. ▸ Spinal stenosis may be inherited. While spinal stenosis is mostly caused through the aging process, the condition can be passed down from one generation to the next. Associated conditions include scoliosis and achondroplasia. ▸ The location of spinal stenosis is related to where symptoms present in the body. Patients will feel numbness, pain, and tingling depending on where the spine narrows. If the lower part of the spine is affected, symptoms will present in the legs; if the spine narrows higher up, there will be symptoms in the arms. ▸ Surgery is not necessary to treat spinal stenosis. Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity. Pain can radiate down the back, arms, and legs, indicating that there is a problem. The development of spinal stenosis can affect a person’s involuntary and voluntary functions, such as breathing, walking, and even bladder and bowel control. Spinal stenosis in the lower back usually causes sciatica. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, muscle relaxants, or other pain relief medications. Physical therapy may also be recommended as stretching and adjusting posture may alleviate some pain and help patients get relief from the discomfort associated with spinal stenosis. Simple flexing and stretching of the spinal column can also help elongate and enlarge the narrow segments and provide relief. Surgery may be required for patients who experience chronic discomfort and pain, especially if the bladder and bowels are compromised or if these other methods are not effective. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Savannah, Georgia’s coastal city, is known for its manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages, and antebellum architecture. During the holidays, Harrison took a trip with his family and his sweetheart to the charming historic district filled with cobblestoned squares and oak trees covered with Spanish moss. As picturesque as the oldest city in the United States is, he took a souvenir photo with Our City Hollywood in between sightseeing, dining, and ghost tours.
