Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

historic “River of Grass.” Protecting South Florida’s national parks remains at the core of NPCA’s work today, including restoring the natural freshwater flow through the Everglades and improving water quality, which in turn protects the native habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Everglades snail kite and the Florida panther. “Nearly half of the historic Everglades habitat and eighty percent of its water supply has been lost which threatens not only the survival of the ecosystem but drinking water for 8 million Floridians who depend on it for clean, fresh water. That’s why restoration in Everglades National Park is critically important and the reason we’re dedicated to the preservation of this vibrant landscape,” explained Cara Capp, Everglades Restoration Program Manager at the National Parks Conservation Association Hollywood office. In addition to Everglades restoration, a significant focus of NPCA’s work in South Florida is on community engagement, particularly with youth and veteran organizations. Often introducing them to national parks, NPCA invites partners to join them by speaking up and supporting parks through service projects, advocacy actions and more.

A

century ago, inspired individuals with a passion for protecting the planet, its resources, and its beauty, as well as a love for America’s national parks came together to form the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). Since its founding in 1919, the NPCA has been an independent, nonpartisan voice working to strengthen and protect the nation’s natural, historical and cultural heritage. NPCA leverages their nationwide network of offices to promote commonsense local, state and federal policies so national parks can thrive for generations to come. Although the organization tirelessly works to protect America’s most iconic landscapes, they are quite busy protecting many here in South Florida. From Dry Tortugas and Biscayne to Big Cypress and Everglades National Park, the NPCA’s Hollywood office also works every day to improve water quality and quantity within the Greater Everglades ecosystem. Just one year after its founding, NPCA began calling for the creation of Everglades National Park to protect the pinelands, wetlands, mangroves, and bays at the southern tip of Florida and what remained of the

Slow and Steady Always Wins – Art Project Unveiled at MEEC BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

ore than 200 people came out to see the newly unveiled mural at the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC) at the historic Carpenter House. This was the most perfect gift the Center received right before the holidays. The big reveal was done after a guided meditation led by Shelly Tygielski. Other environmental art by Captain Honk and Free Our Seas artists were also on display. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the local nonprofit Free Our Seas organization, Nova Southeastern University (NSU), the Marine Environmental Education Center at the Historic Carpenter House

(MEEC), Broward County Parks and Recreation and artist Rei Ramirez, Hollywood Beach has its first mural. “As we discussed ideas for the mural, it was important to me that we show a connection between life above and below the sea,” said Dr. Derek Burkholder, NSU research scientist and director of the MEEC. Up and coming South Florida muralist, Rei Ramirez was born in Cuba and grew up in South Florida. He’s created murals in Wynwood, Ft. Lauderdale and now he’s proud to share this one on Hollywood Beach. His art is inspired by his love of the ocean, beaches, nature and the surroundings in which they are in. The mural represents the beauty of our local ocean and touches on how man is part of a community in which he is depended upon both above and below the waters. “The mural was created as an inspirational tribute to Captain, the rescued green sea turtle that resides at the center. There is no better way to share her journey of rehabilitation than the collaboration of art and science. I’m honored to have been chosen to create this colorful, eye-catching mural that

shares my love for sea turtles and their symbolism,” explained Rei Ramirez. Founders of Free Our Seas, Elaine Fiore, and Manon Wiese explain, “Free Our Seas harnesses the power of “Art and Community” to raise awareness and collaborate on solutions for our environment in a positive, empowering way. We are an ocean-loving community, in fact, the only in Broward County currently, with an ordinance prohibiting restaurants east of the Intracoastal from using single-use plastics and polystyrene. The mural depicts a clean and healthy ocean and inhabitants which is the aim of all of our efforts. Rei Ramirez’s mural will help attract more people to the Marine Environmental Education Center to learn about ocean conservation and our interconnectedness.” n The Marine Environmental Education Center is located at 4414 North Surf Road, Hollywood (North Beach,) and is open 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are 16 MARCH 2019 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

gun ranges and stores frequently dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the

SCHOOL NEWS

Green is the New Blue - Driftwood Middle School Does It Again! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

D

riftwood Middle School is the proud recipient of yet another award in which they worked so hard to achieve. They are one of only 111 schools in the United States, 5 in Florida, and the first in Broward County to receive the prestigious “Green Flag Award” from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), the Eco-Schools highest honor. The Eco-Schools USA program is based on the commitment and work of student-driven teams who are dedicated to environmental issues such as waste reduction and energy and water conservation using audits, action plans, and other educational resources. For the last three years, the Cardinals have been working hard to earn such an honor, the school’s Green Team created action plans that would reduce their carbon footprint. They chose to address a few sustainability focus areas including “Climate Change, Water, Waste, and Energy Reduction” as the environmental pathways to reach the coveted award. During the process, the team audited facility energy efficiency, raised environmental awareness, connected students to the natural world, and increased student engagement while saving money for the school. “We at the National Wildlife Federation and Eco-Schools USA are proud of the example set by Driftwood Middle School in Florida,” said Kim

Martinez, Senior Director of K-16 Education Programs. “This award demonstrates not only a commitment to sustainability and environmental literacy for students and faculty but an appreciation that the best, most effective education transcends the classroom and offers a place-based, hands-on approach to learning”. Many are already aware that the NWF is America’s largest conservation organization with the goal of uniting all Americans to ensure that wildlife thrives in a rapidly changing world. Ten years ago, they were named the stateside host for the international Eco-

Schools program. It has become a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development. Since 2008, Driftwood Middle School has had many accomplishments with award-winning educator Linda Gancitano at the helm. In 2012 they were the first Broward school to be recognized as a “USDOE Green Ribbon School” followed by the “District P3 Eco-Challenge School Award” (2013), “Florida Green School Award” (2014), “Florida Green Apple Award” (2017), and now they can add “NWF Green Flag Award’ (2018) to their already illustrious resume of honors.

An Army of ACES Students Raise Funds for a Deserving Foundation BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

any elementary age students typically go about their school day learning new material, skills, and so much more before heading to extracurricular activities and clubs, doing homework, and hanging out with friends. However, some Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) students have even more on their agenda. They want to help those in need. ACES National Junior Honor Society, Lead 2 Feed, and Girls on the Run students learned about Ellie’s Army Foundation and immediately wanted

to get involved. The 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization provides financial assistance to children and young adults who are battling life-threatening illness to give them the best chance to survive. Ellie’s Army fights for those in need to have the best chance of survival, regardless of financial costs. Their goal is to relieve families of the ongoing stress of not being able to afford life’s basic necessities while paying for crucial medical treatments. In honor of its namesake Ellie Levy, the Miami-Dade organization helps those fight critical illnesses.

“Ellie wore her scars proudly. After all, she earned them. She was happy, and that was her magic: her ability to find light in the darkness and joy in the pain. Ellie was fierce. She was courageous, not because she wasn’t scared, but because she kept moving forward despite the worry. She looked fear in the face and never ran from it, she never hid. She was bold. She was a warrior. Ellie’s Army Foundation does just that.” The compassionate and ambitious ACES bunch raised funds and laced up their sneakers to participate in the organization’s annual “Dirty Socks 5K and Walkathon”. Unlike most South Florida days, this one happened to be cold, windy, and rainy. Despite the weather challenges, the students and their advisor, Ms. Del Rosario braved the elements and walked and ran around Aventura Circle. “I’m so proud of our students, they committed to the cause and didn’t let

a little rain stop them from achieving their goal,” expressed Del Rosario. Three ACES students placed in their age group, first place overall winner was Eli Borojovich, second place overall was Mia Gal, and third place was Yurii Hriaziev. ACES students know their actions and commitment can make a difference. “I think it’s so cool to have all of Aventura get together as a group and do something that could save lives,” shared seventh grader, Eli Borojovich. The ACES student body looks forward to the next opportunity to participate in an impactful community event such as this. n For more information on Ellie’s Army Foundation and how to get involved, please visit elliesarmy.org.

Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep, because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. PAIN MANAGEMENT

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis? BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

T

he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” Although it’s strange sounding, there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ▸▸ Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ▸▸ Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ▸▸ Pain comes and goes, but significantly is getting worse up the spine ▸▸ Temporary relief from over-the-counter medications ▸▸ Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist.

“CHARLOTTE”

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Preventing Vehicle Thefts BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM ehicle and/or car-related thefts are among the most common offenses calling for police response. These thefts fall into two categories. Each category of theft covers a wide range of offenses committed by different groups of offenders with different motivations. Thefts of vehicles include thefts for joyriding, thefts for prolonged car use, thefts for export, and/or “chopping” (disassembling cars for spare parts). Thefts of cars are much more reported to the police due to insurance requirements, and the fact that the police might help find stolen cars that are later abandoned. Offenders target all kinds of vehicles for theft whereas car-related thefts occur on residential streets, driveways and parking facilities. Thefts from vehicles include thefts of items left inside of vehicles, thefts of interior components such as radios and/or batteries, airbags, and thefts of external parts (i.e., wheels). The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports more than 75,000 thefts of airbags on an annual basis. Security ▸▸ Improve Lighting Most thefts from vehicles in residential neighborhoods occur at night because this is when most cars are present in the communities. Also, this is because of the anonymity that darkness provides. A review of a study found that offenders targeted cars in residential areas for theft; eighty percent (80%) of potential burglars limited their activities to the hours of darkness. Well-lit streets and homes increase the risk of detection and can act as a deterrent to would-be offenders. Therefore, we encourage homeowners to install and utilize additional lighting around their homes to deter thieves/burglars. ▸▸ Remove Vegetation and Other Covers Ill-tended shrubbery provides cover for thieves. Therefore, we encourage property owners to remove such vegetation and/or modify structures such as carports or any other features that can help reduce the occurrence of theft. Education ▸▸ Alert Car Owners about Theft Problems and Effective Prevention While trying to determine the local vehicle theft problems within the community, it was found that car owners often do not secure their personal property as well as they should. Consequently, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) spearheaded publicity campaigns which consisted mainly in distributing information flyers and brochures to residences in areas experiencing such vehicle burglaries. Enforcement ▸▸ Increased Patrol When crime analysis data demonstrate a clear pattern of thefts in certain locations and at certain times, the NMBPD increases patrol whereas unmarked patrol units are used to monitor the area, to track and identify suspicious individuals within the neighborhood and its surrounding areas. Among the most important messages that are conveyed to car owners is the following: if car owners must park their vehicles on the street, then the investment of after-market security systems, especially those that are visible to the thief, is probably worth more than losing any personal items and/or their vehicle.

CHAMBER NEWS

Preparing the Community for The Perfect Storm

T

he Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a “Disaster Preparedness Conference” on April 18th that no business can afford to miss. The conference will take place at Margaritaville and will be from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The cost will be $99 per person. Expo tables and sponsorships are available. The primary goal of the “2019 GHCC Disaster Preparedness Conference” is to properly prepare small and large businesses in our coastal community for hurricane season. These disasters include hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. In addition to information from Federal, State, and Local officials on new policies to improve Emergency Management in the Hollywood area, we will also provide informational resources from expert members of our business community on insurance policies, real estate, interim financing, disaster clean up, system backup and human resources. The Structure of the Conference will be shaped to focus on before, during and after a storm. Before the Storm: We will focus our discussions on insurance policies, resources, hurricane hardening programs as well as provide information on what paperwork and photos should be prepared in advance of a storm and how to properly back up your computer systems and

create a business plan for employees prior to a storm. During the Storm: Bill (William Condon) Director of the Long-Term Recovery Coalition of Broward will discuss evacuation plans, shelters, emergency management, and first responders’ needs. After the Storm: Panelists will discuss the importance of not cleaning up too fast (72-hour wait) FEMA, Hollywood’s Pilot Initiative, USSBA loans, and financing. We will provide a list of Chamber member vendors in areas like water restoration, contractors, waste pick-up, inspection as a resource for participants to contact after the Storm. The format will consist of an opening Keynote speaker followed by panel discussion sessions. Each panel discussion will take place twice to allow all attendees to experience each session at least once. We all know storms are inevitable when living in South Florida, but a lot can be done to best prepare

and recover quickly and smoothly. Hollywood will lead the way in storm recovery! Guest speakers will address: ▸▸ What Federal, State, and local programs are available to assist the business community to prepare and respond to a hurricane? ▸▸ Physical Property ▸▸ Workforce ▸▸ Interim financial loans ▸▸ Does your insurance policy cover ALL of your business needs in the event of a storm? What does your insurance really cover? How long before you can have access to your resources? ▸▸ Do you have property damage? What is your liability as a landlord? or tenant? What to do if your landlord/property owner does not follow up after a disaster. How to clean up safely after a storm and who is responsible for expenses, tenant or the building owner? ▸▸ How to store and backup your computer systems. ▸▸ How do you assist your employees and protect your workforce in the event of a storm? To RSVP and learn more, please visit The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at 330 N. Federal Highway, Hollywood, 33020 or www.hollywoodchamber.org, or call Tammy at (954) 923-4000. Saving Ocean Life (SOL) was invited to host the 4 Ocean Anniversary Beach Clean-up. It was one of the largest cleanups on Hollywood Beach. They also cleaned the mangroves at FIU and went fish netting to learn about different species in our backyard.

Barks and Brunch

The Humane Society of Greater Miami's 22nd annual “Brunch for the Animals” brought more than 340 animal lovers and their dogs together at the iconic Fontainebleau Miami Beach to enjoy a delicious brunch to help the homeless animals in the community. With the help of Brooke Soffer, a great advocate and friend of the animals, and the fabulous chairmen, Amy Zakarin and Isaac Rosenberg, Alan G. Randolph and Steven Rodriguez, and Angela and Louis Birdman, and event emcee, Louis Aguirre, the event raised close to $150,000 to benefit the abandoned animals of Miami who do not have a voice of their own.
