South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance
O
n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

INSPIRING INDIVIDUALS
All in the Name of Love – Memorial Hospital ER Named for Hollywood Residents
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust recently, a prominent Hollywood couple, Judith and Robert Cornfeld, made an extremely generous donation to the Memorial Foundation. Their selfless generosity prompted the world-renowned organization to recognize the couple on their 60th wedding anniversary by naming the emergency department at Memorial Regional Hospital in their honor. “Love and health are the two most important things in our lives,” said Dr. Robert Cornfeld. “Judy and I believe there is no better way to honor our 60 years together than to give back to our local hospital, which has powerfully served our family and community for decades.” Their love story began in Miami in 1957 when Dr. Cornfeld was a dentist at the Homestead Air Force Base and the future Mrs. Cornfeld was a dental hygienist from Brooklyn. Dr. Cornfeld recalls their meeting on the beach. “I told Judy what I did for a living and she thought it was a pickup line. I had to answer questions about
the proper names for all her teeth before she took me seriously,” said Cornfeld with a chuckle. Four years later, the couple moved to Hollywood and opened Robert’s orthodontic practice. They settled into the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, raised a family, had additional success in real estate, and became active philanthropists, primarily supporting local healthcare and the arts. The recent dona-
tion was the second major gift from the Cornfeld Family to the Memorial Foundation in connection with Memorial Regional Hospital. “We’re very pleased the Cornfeld Family has continued their generous support and delighted to recognize this gift by naming the emergency department for them,” said Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, Memorial Healthcare System president & CEO. “Philanthropy is critically important to Memorial and donations like this are essential if we’re to accomplish the ambitious goals we’ve set to serve our community’s future needs.” With more than 110,000 patient visits each year, the Judith and Robert Cornfeld Emergency Department is the busiest emergency department in Broward County and one of the busiest in Florida. The Memorial Foundation raises funds philanthropically to assist patients, families, and to underwrite the cost of programs, facilities, and equipment within the Memorial Healthcare System (www.mhs. net), where no one is ever denied care because of an inability to pay. To learn more or make a donation, please call 954-265-3454 or visit them online.

Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create
an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.
▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.
How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

Be My Valentine – Avant Garde Academy Students Show their Love BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
typical Valentine’s Day in elementary school usually consists of passing out little holiday messages and candy to classmates and teachers. However, Avant Garde Academy students wanted to do something more than exchange cards during February’s signature holiday. These kind students decided to show their love by having a community party and inviting officers from the Hollywood Police Department to their classes. Lara Leader, parent of an Avante Garde third grader, assisted with organizing the event. She also approached local businesses to show their support. Joan’s Florist and Gino’s Italian Market generously donated flowers and treats for the officers. Prior to the anticipated event, students worked hard to create and decorate cards. The colorful and creative homemade cards expressed appreciation for keeping the community safe. Officers from the prestigious department happily participated without hesitation. They spoke about their jobs and answered plenty on inquisitive questions before accepting their cards and crafts to decorate their station.
“My first graders were thrilled when we began discussing creating Valentines for the police officers. They have such an interest in that field,” exclaimed Sarah Sargiotto, Avant Garde first grade teacher. “The

students were beyond excited when the officer sat down and read each and every valentine they made for her.” “The Valentine’s Day event held by the students at Avant Garde Academy was amazing. They truly worked hard on the beautiful cards and wreaths,” said Officer Danielly De Andrade. “I especially loved receiving flowers, getting to know the kids and answer some questions they had about law enforcement. It was truly an awesome experience.” “The students were completely engaged and in awe. They have already asked me when they can make cards for the Hollywood Police Department again! Some students are writing letters to the officers with more questions. It was an amazing experience for the kids and we are extremely grateful,” added Sargiotto. The basic principle of Avante Garde Academy is to give their students “an opportunity to develop moral and democratic values on an intellectual level during daily activities”. Furthermore, they require that “each student make a determined effort to take every opportunity toward their own fulfillment and as a member of the community via the established structures and support systems provided by the School”.

Colbert Museum Magnet School Students Recreate and Remember History BY BEVERLY PERKINS
D
uring Black History Month, the 4th grade students at Colbert Museum Magnet School performed in a Black History Showcase with a variety of artistic expressions. Julian Bonaby and Kaniyah Johnson, students from Mrs. Fox’s class, co-hosted the show. The two 4th graders spoke eloquently to parents, teachers and their peers. They introduced acts, informed the audience about little known black history facts, and provided humor. The phenomenal dance team led by Ms. Pierre performed three songs. Their first performance was an African dance performed with the accompaniment of Jacques Durand Jr., Colbert Museum Magnet music teacher, who played the Djembe Drum. In addition to this performance, the dance team performed two more mixed songs, including a song entitled “Breaking Chains” by local music artist S. Kay. The entire 4th grade population was assigned to research a prominent figure in black history and present it to their parents and their classmates. The best presenters were then asked to be part of the showcase where they created a living wax museum. Students dressed up as Sojourner Truth, Ray Charles, and many other significant individuals and recited educational information on their choice figure. Other highlights of the evening were The Colbert Elementary Drumline which consisted of 4th and 5th grade student-musicians. Under the direction of Mr. Durand, the talented group performed 2 marching percussion pieces.
An African Fashion segment was also incorporated into this year’s show. Students and teachers modeled their traditional African garments under the supervision of Ms. Neat and Ms. Morris, The 4th and 5th grade students also dressed up and informed the audience on the National PanHellenic Council (NPHC), a collaborative organization of AfricanAmerican Fraternities and Sororities, under the direction of Assistant Principal Mr. McLeod. The Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. from Bethune-Cookman University, performed a series of steps, chants and strolls, informing the crowd on the history of the Fraternity. Among the performers was Mr. Durand, and Mr. McLeod who are also members of the fraternity. “I find it extremely important to celebrate our dark past, as well as our rich African-American history. It is important for our students to know that black history doesn’t end inside of the history books. They must realize that they have the power to make a difference, and create history every day,” stated Mr. Durand.
Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
#MSDStrong BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY
R
eaders of Our City Hollywood magazine, hello and best greetings to you and your families. As I write this month’s column, it has been a little over month since Valentine’s Day, when 34 children and teachers fell victim to a horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Such sorrow, frustration and resolve has fallen upon our community. Sorrow for the victims and their families, including two Hollywood families who were directly impacted by the tragedy. The family of Alex Schachter, may peace be upon him, is from Hollywood. Alex’s father, Max, grew up in Hollywood and his grandparent lives here. Coach Chris Hixon, may he rest in peace, lived in Hollywood. Chris’ wife, Debbi, and family reside here in Hollywood, where Debbi is a teacher at South Broward High School. The sorrow we feel for the victims of this shooting is immense as is our frustration. Frustration that the legislative and public safety measures that have been employed to date have been so insufficient in their ability to effectively protect our students and teachers while they are at school. After so many school shootings, how have our state and federal bodies not yet enacted tougher public safety legislation to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands? High velocity assault weapons that leave even our own police officers outgunned and defenseless? Why are schools not better protected, in view of the obvious need for better physical security and mental health and law enforcement intervention? The questions and failures cannot be more serious, but this time, the resolve to put an end to failures cannot be avoided. The resolve of our citizenry, led by the Stoneman Douglas students and families themselves, will not yield to the ordinary political paralysis that has left our communities at risk. Legislative action is demanded. At the state level, there are already results with the very important, albeit imperfect, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which, among other things, prevents rifles from being sold to persons under 21 (same as the minimum age for purchasing hand guns and alcohol), and enables law enforcement to obtain an order from a judge that enables guns to be removed from the custody of those who are a threat to themselves or others. At the federal level, far reaching legislation is demanded as well. Same from our local school boards, who will have a significant role to play in most properly investing the school safety funding that the state and federal governments will be making available. Be sure that in Hollywood, your local government shares this resolve, and will work with you for the best possible protection for our schools and community.

SPECIAL FEATURE - EDITORIAL
End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past
Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

My friends and I have started the #NeverAgain movement to ensure that nowhere else has to endure a tragedy like this, that nowhere else do people have to suffer the pain that we feel. Unfortunately, however, our cause has quickly been twisted into a partisan debate. Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of
Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

Temple Beth El Program Provides Bar & Bat Mitzvahs For Families Unaffiliated with a Temple
M
any Jewish families have felt the call the to the Torah yet are not members of a Temple. Temple Beth El has developed a program specifically for those families. For many, young men, like Ethan Sicker, not having a Bar Mitzvah is out of the question. “He’s Jewish and he was going to be Bar Mitzvahed. It still means something.” Ethan’s parents went from one temple to the next but couldn’t find what they were looking for. According to his mother, Erin, the temples all wanted too much of Ethan’s time, “These kids are so busy and so stressed as it is.” Then they heard about the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Accelerated Prep Program at Temple Beth El. Specifically geared towards families unaffiliated with a synagogue, the Accelerated Prep Program (APP) extends an opportunity for every Jewish child to experience the rite of passage of being called to the Torah as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. “The APP is amazing!” Erin says, “I recommend it totally. Cantor Manny is absolutely wonderful. We met with him and that was the end of that. He is so chill. Ethan absolutely connected with him. Wonderful, wonder-
ful experience.” The experience Erin “kvells” about is a program tailored to the individual child. Bar and Bat Mitzvah dates can be reserved a few years in advance but even half a year affords enough time to prepare for the big day. APP students often begin with no knowledge of Hebrew and by the conclusion of the program,
they are reading from the Torah. All receive private tutoring with Cantor Manny Silver, guidance sessions with Rabbi Allan Tuffs and when schedules demand, classes can be held remotely via Skype or Facetime. The actual Bar or Bat Mitzvah service is held in the regal Beth El sanctuary and the facilities include a spacious ballroom available for a reception. “It’s a different world than when we were growing up,” Erin remembers. “It doesn’t work like that anymore. The temple has to evolve. This is one temple that is evolving.” Much to the benefit of unaffiliated families and their children throughout South Florida and beyond (currently there is one APP student studying remotely from Atlanta!) Since Ethan’s Bar Mitzvah a year ago there have been twelve more APP Bar and Bat Mitzvahs at Temple Beth El. Temple Beth El is a progressive congregation, founded in 1957, blending Jewish values, study, social action and traditions into a house of worship, education and community. For more information about the APP program, call 954-920-8225 or visit www.templebethelhollywood.org./app

heumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including: sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Nonsurgical Fat Removal with CoolSculpting BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS
T
he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2016 was liposuction, with just over 400,000 liposuction procedures performed last year in the United States, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. With an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, there comes a time when, despite diet and exercise, unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of which have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs, arms, inner thighs, bra fat area, and double chin with evidence of skin tightening in the neck region. Eighty-six percent of the patients treated noticed a visible fat reduction and with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess; the fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat destroying the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring. HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD SHOPPING IS A PLEASURE
In late February, the new, highly anticipated Publix on Hollywood Circle officially opened to the public. Mayor Levy and his family were the first shoppers at 6:45 a.m., before the store’s grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. The new store, located on Young Circle, was the first to open at the landmark $200 million mixed-use Hollywood Circle development. Photo Credit: Lalani Photography

LUCK OF THE IRISH
The City of Hollywood certainly was lucky as they celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on the most gorgeous March weekend. Thousands of residents showed up donning their green to watch the festive parade, complete with the Budweiser Clydesdales, and to enjoy all things Irish. Photos Courtesy: Barry Stock Photography
