An Electrifying Fundraiser – Lions Club Fun Run BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t was an exciting evening at ArtsPark in early spring as the Lions Club hosted its first annual 5k run in Downtown Hollywood’s most popular venue. The “Electric Light the Night Fun Run” brought out many supporters including Mayor Josh Levy. All proceeds raised were to benefit Project Alive, the non-profit organization’s charity of choice. Vendors were on-site selling food and live music was presented by local band Night Court and DJ Rebecca from Absolute Mix Entertainment. The award-winning dancers from Dance Explosion gave the audience an electrifying performance to get them ready for the run. Eager participants came donning plenty of colorful clothing, glow gear, and flashing lights. Just before the sun set, Zumba instructors from the Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center warmed up the crowd with some great dance moves and energetic music. However, all went silent as the first lap was done with a candle vigil to remember the students lost in the Stoneman Douglas tragedy, and to honor the teachers
who gave up their lives to protect their students including Hollywood’s Hometown Hero Chris Hixon, a former teacher at South Broward High School. “We wanted to try something different than most of the other 5k runs in the city which typically utilize the Broad Walk on the beach,” said the event chair Katie Lizana, “We chose to benefit Project Alive and their efforts to cure the rare disease Hunter Syndrome since we have 4 local boys battling this terminal disease.” After the ceremonial first lap, the music was turned up and the runners took off glowing and flashing as they made their way around the perimeter of the circle in the dark. “This new Lions Club is looking to make volunteering fun,” said Rich Aube, Lions Club president. “We can enjoy improving the lives of many with our efforts, even our own.” The lions Club was happy to report that over $8,000 was raised for their incredible charity. Piece by Piece – Hollywood Teen to Receive National Gold Key Award BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Broward Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Reception was held in mid-February at the Young at Art Museum in Davie. Many talented teens were recognized as they showcased their work to fellow students, teachers, friends, and family members at the free community event. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition initiative to foster talent for creative teens. Since 1923, millions of students have participated including a notable list of alumni such as Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Zac Posen, and Lena Dunham. A panel of South Florida artists and art professionals came together to select the most exceptional art in the region. One teen who received the distinguished Gold Key Award in the Broward region was Rachel Tupler of Hollywood for her
ceramic sculpture, “Shelter from the Storm”. This is a remarkable achievement and milestone for the 16-year-old University School sophomore. Each emerging artist was required to submit a written description of their work. Rachel wrote a profound piece to include with her creation. “Shelter from the Storm embodies the true meaning of coming together as a community after a natural disaster such as the one that South Florida experienced a few months ago. My community truly stood as one as we recovered from Hurricane Irma. We didn’t only have to protect and take care of ourselves and our families, but also helped those less fortunate across the state. My piece symbolizes the activity of knitting blankets, piece by piece. A small knitted square may seem inconsequential when it comes to helping so many thousands of displaced people, but if everyone knits just one square – if a community comes together and helps in any way no matter how small – a whole blanket will be created, making a significant impact on giving back.” After this event, Rachel received confirmation that her work was forwarded to the 2018 National Exhibition. Almost 19,600 works earned Gold Keys and advanced to the national adjudication. Of those Gold Key works, just 3,259 received National Medals, and this Hollywood teen recently found out that she is the top 1% to be awarded a National Gold Key next month at a ceremony in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. Through the awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships.

Local Teen “SEAS” the Big Picture BY BEVERLY PERKINS

hree years ago, Joey Goldstein learned about the global issue of pollution contaminating the oceans in her fourth-grade science class. The vivacious student became fascinated with the topic, and immediately thought that she could help solve the problem. She wanted to invent a special rake to clean the ocean. After expressing her ideas in school, her teacher encouraged her to make a change on a local level. “I remember when Joey came home from school and told us that she wanted to start an organization to do beach clean-ups and teach other children about the issues facing our oceans and marine life,” said her mother Cheryl Goldstein. “This is how SOL was born!” The young NSU elementary student founded Saving Ocean Life (SOL) in 2015. Its mission is to prevent pollution on the beaches through organized beach clean-ups and by spreading awareness throughout the community. SOL plans events four times a year and all the events are open to the public. Joey, now a seventh grader, plans to continue her efforts, “I want to inspire and encourage other kids to clean and protect our coastal environments. It’s up to my generation to make a difference.” Often times, an educational component is also included in the event. Participants have learned
to participate. Check-in and registration begins at 9:00am and the clean-up starts at 10:00am. Over 100 volunteers participated in last year’s “Trash Treasure Hunt”. The event combines a beach clean-up along with the excitement of a treasure hunt where participants can win prizes. Sponsorship opportunities are available, and all the proceeds raised will go toward ocean conservation. “Kids really get excited to win prizes, but more importantly they are happy to help us clean our coast,” added Joey. Children and teens can become SOLmates by attending SOL’s events and by starting SOL chapters in their schools. By educating the youth of today, SOL hopes to decrease the amount of trash on our beaches tomorrow. about sea turtles, sharks and Florida’s coral reefs. Additionally, SOL has hosted a turtle release and a shark tagging excursion. On May 20th, SOL will hold its “Second Annual Trash Treasure Hunt” at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. Kids of all ages are invited
The 2nd annual “Trash Treasure Hunt” will be held on May 20th at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort at 9:00am. To register go to eventbrite.com/o/sol-saving-ocean-life-16709304064. Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” The second response is, “How do you say that?” Although, it’s strange sounding (ANK-ki-low-sing spon-di-LIE-tis), there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. Sometimes, it results in a forward-stooped posture. AS can also affect other areas of the body, this may include pain and tenderness in the shoulders, hips, ribs, and even heels. Additionally, pain and stiffness may spread into the neck over the course of time. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. AS occurs when the immune system attacks healthy joints, mainly in the spine. The immune’s response is what causes the inflammation. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ▸▸ Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ▸▸ Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ▸▸ Pain comes and goes, but significantly is getting worse up the spine ▸▸ Temporary relief from over-the-counter medications ▸▸ Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. If left untreated, over an extended period of time, AS can become persistent and can occur in other parts of the body. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Downtown Hollywood Art is Off the Wall BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY
F
ellow Hollywood Residents and Visitors, Have you visited Hollywood’s historic downtown recently? If you have, you may have noticed that two more building façades in Downtown Hollywood have become eye-catching works of art thanks to the addition of amazing new murals painted by three South Florida artists. A mural installation at 115 N. 21st Avenue and 2050 Hollywood Boulevard are the latest in a series of outdoor works by established local contemporary artists that currently adorn 24 downtown properties between 21st Avenue and U.S. 1. The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) was launched in August 2012 by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), and its mission is to beautify and add culture to the downtown area - one wall at a time. The project has become a great success, winning repeated critical acclaim – so much so that Downtown Hollywood is starting to be recognized as the northern destination to Miami’s Wynwood arts district. The first of the two new murals was created by South Beach-based Yuhmi Collective, husband-and-wife art duo Victor and Michelle Vasquez, who were captivated by Hollywood founder Joseph Young’s “Dream City” vision and the founding story of how “Hollywood by the Sea” was created and transformed through the years. The colorful pastel-hued mural depicts a whimsical undersea scene featuring a mermaid and other sea creatures and reflects the couple’s East Asian influence. Miami muralist and fine-art painter Fabio Onrack features realistic black-andwhite portraits of renowned artists Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Onrack’s work reflects his artistic passion for painting people and places and his exploratory style of painting three-dimensional elements with expressive movement and emotion. The Yuhmi Collective mural is located on the southeast corner of 21st Avenue and Tyler Street, and Onrack’s mural is on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard at 21st Avenue. Jill Weisberg, the CRA’s mural project’s art director, notes how exciting it is that thousands of cars will see a beautiful mermaid and her sea turtle friends or famous artist portraits as they drive by the Dixie corridor’s gateway to Downtown Hollywood. The addition of these outdoor murals at key locations in the historic arts, music and entertainment district is designed to enhance and enrich the existing cultural fabric of our community, and it’s attracting more artrelated activities, businesses and events. To learn more about the DHMP, visit DowntownHollywoodMuralProject.org. For more information about redevelopment projects, businesses, artwalks, artisan markets, classic car shows and other events in Hollywood’s Downtown and Beach Districts, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954.924.2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

ASK THE EXPERT
Moms, Give Yourself A Gift this Mother’s Day BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing
stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result - smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of child bearing and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Tummy tuck ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Breast lift (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover: ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.
