Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!
S
ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely,

T
he ladies of the Hollywood Women’s Club are always quite busy, and have been for almost 10 decades. The historic club has been one of tradition, dedication, preservation, and celebration. It has also been the foundation for developing the city. Founded in 1922 by the “First Ladies of Hollywood”, mostly wives of officers of the companies which comprised the JW Young Companies, the Club provided much needed services and ‘society’ to their new hometown. These women guided the Club through the early depression years and built a Clubhouse in 1927 on land donated by Joseph W. Young. The facility is on the National Historic Register. Besides helping the community with volunteer services, donations, and charitable fundraising, these members embarked upon fundraising of their own to preserve their landmark building. The Hollywood Women’s Club recently launched the Campaign for Tomorrow, Capital Campaign to raise funds for the continued restoration of its Historic Clubhouse. The focus is Accessibility * Safety * Functionality. They held their first Honorary Committee Meeting at the home of Alex Bruno. The committee members are Alex Bruno, Commissioner Debra Case, Meg Donoghue, County Commissioner Beam Furr,

Kimberly Longmire, Barbara Marks, Ann McQueen, Mardi Podesta, Maribelle Ruis, Clive Taylor, Patty Wilock, Carol Fitzgerald, President and Isabel Wise, Former President. The first priority discussed were the necessary improvements to make the facility safe and accessible for all. Spring fundraising efforts paid off, as members celebrated the 95th anniversary with a Speakeasy event, followed by An Old Fashioned Tea Party. This month their 6th annual golf tournament returns to the Hollywood Golf Beach Club on July 22nd. The 9-hole game begins with a shotgun start at 8:00am and is $65.00 per player. A Bougainvillea $500 Sponsorship includes a foursome, 4 contest packages, two hole signage with acknowledgement in press releases, materials and social media, and brunch following the tournament with a fabulous silent auction and raffles at Shenanigans East Side Pub. “The Hollywood Women’s Club Clubhouse for 90 years has played a significant role in our community not only as a home to the Club but also as a center of community activity and events,”
says Carol Fitzgerald, Club President. “Ongoing restoration of the clubhouse is a critical part of mission and the Campaign for Tomorrow will provide funds for handicap accessibility, safety upgrades and improvements in our catering kitchen. Our day group is comprises of senior citizens and easier access is in demand.” Visit www.hollywoodwomensclub.org for information about membership, meetings, events, and volunteer opportunities. It’s Never Too Late to be a Buddy COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
ay was national Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, and many came out to the Great Strides 5K Walk at North Park at Hollywood Beach including 11-month-old Baylie Moen and her team of 68 people named “Baylie’s Buddies”. The bright-eyed, blonde hair infant was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis just shy of being 2-weeks-old. Approximately 30,000 Americans are living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The progressive life-threatening genetic disease causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. The defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. Baylie is pancreas insufficient so she must take enzymes to digest food, and use a vest for daily treatment. The inflatable vest attaches to a machine and mechanically performs chest physical therapy by vibrating at a high-frequency. The chest wall oscillation loosens and thins the mucus. This must be done twice a day in twenty minute increments. Vests such as these cost $17,000, which is why awareness and finding a cure is so important. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: ▸▸ More than 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis (more than 70,000 worldwide). ▸▸ Approximately 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. ▸▸ More than 75 percent of people with CF are diagnosed by age 2. ▸▸ More than half of the CF population is age 18 or older. ▸▸ More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene.
▸▸ CF used to be considered exclusively a childhood disease. Thanks to advancements in CF research and care, people with the disease are living into their 30s, 40s and beyond. ▸▸ The life expectancy for someone with CF has doubled in the last 30 years, but people still lose their lives to this devastating disease every day. ▸▸ The CF Foundation will not rest until we find a cure for all people Baylie Moen with cystic fibrosis. Baylie’s Buddies raised a total of $6,755.00. Those that walked raised $3,755.00 and the Cooper City Optimist Club raised $3,000 with a soccer charity game. Since the walk Baylie celebrated her first birthday. “The 2017 Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis Awareness was the first of many to come. We must put in the work, so one day CF will stand for Cure Found!” said Justin Moen, Baylie’s father. “We thank everyone near and far for all the love and support, and are blessed to have absolutely amazing family and friends that have our backs in our journey ahead.” For more information visit www.cff.org or to donate please visit fightcf.cff.org and search for Baylie’s Buddies.

Apollo Middle School Students Got the 411 on the 911
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A
s part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program, Apollo Middle School students were able to visit the City of Hollywood Police Department just before the 2016-2017 school year came to a close. The special field trip was presented by Learning for Success, Inc. and The City of Hollywood in conjunction with Broward County Schools. KAPOW, now in its 25th year, serves 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, 100 area businesses and community organizations, volunteers, and 64 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. During the visit the many students declared their intention to pursue a career in law enforcement. They were able to engage in a variety of activities throughout the Hollywood Police Department facility. These included crime scene investigation, training simulation, and a thorough experience inside and outside a SWAT vehicle. The visit culminated with a series of career awareness and workplace skills lessons taught by City of Hollywood volunteers, including City Commissioner Kevin Biederman and his wife Donna Biederman, and Raheem Seecharan and Cinthya Guillen from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Many students declared their intention to pursue a career in law enforcement after the visit. KAPOW brings volunteers into schools to teach kids about work, and how to be a success in school, work and life. KAPOW also brings students to the workplace, to experience peoples’ jobs first-hand, expose them to jobs in real time, and connect partner companies and organizations to the community.
JULY 2017 | OUR CITY HOLLYWOOD
To participate, volunteers are assigned to one class at a local elementary or middle school, and must visit seven times during the school year for one hour to teach KAPOW’s fun and easy to use lessons. Before volunteers begin, a one-time training will explain and educate how the lessons work, how to ensure that they will be successful, and how to have a great time doing it. Visits to work sites are custom-designed with their partners to suit each school’s needs and capabilities. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success in school, work, and life.”
KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about KAPOW, visit http://kapowlfs.wordpress.com, or contact KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com.

McArthur High School Celebrated American Muslim Heritage Month
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n early May, the School Board of Broward County (SBBC) proclaimed May as American Muslim month. Supported by the Diversity Committee, the Broward County Council of Muslim Students Association, the Department of Diversity and Prevention, and the Human Relations Council, McArthur High School created their own Muslim Student Association (MSA). McArthur High School Algebra teacher, Naima Khan-Ghany, formed the club at the beginning of the school year. She brought students together to share experiences, concerns, and ideas to foster an inclusive environment in public schools in a focus group setting. The Muslim population in Broward county schools is growing at a rapid pace, and the purpose is to make Muslim minorities feel safe and included. Khan-Ghany’s vision was to bring all the schools which started MSA clubs together so they could help other schools establish their own clubs. With countless meetings, and unwavering support from parents, McArthur High School held its Mayor of Broward first Annual Award and Recognition Ceremony County presenting signed proclamation to where the Broward County School Council of Naima Khan-Ghany MSAs was launched. The ceremony included representatives from 12 schools. These schools worked tirelessly to create a presentation for the School Board on May 2nd where history was made when the Resolution was read. The community showed unconditional support by representing the heritage in large numbers, from parents, support groups, students, organizations and teachers. During the month, many activities were presented at school to showcase diversity and tolerance. These included Hijab-a-thon, henna art, a viewing of “Prince among Slaves”, as well as other art exhibits and games. Additionally, proj-
ects such as feeding the homeless and meet and greets were also community service efforts. “Providing a better understanding of Islam is very important now especially with all the misconceptions out there. We are hoping to inculcate a positive outlook by showing our students want it means to be a Muslim,” said Khan-Ghany. “We are not here to teach religion in schools but to create awareness of Islam and Muslims. We believe in diversity and tolerance and our Muslim students Association is made up of Muslims as well as non-Muslims. We teach respect for our community and self and believe in giving back.”
The month-long celebration concluded with The BCS Council of MSAs hosting an iftar and community dinner at McArthur High School where Khan-Ghany was presented with a proclamation from the Mayor of Broward County. The club is currently working with the Diversity, Prevention and Intervention department to create a resource list of organizations which can provide social services for Muslim students and their families in Broward County and developing a handout that will be made available to all staff and administration regarding “10 facts to know about Muslims”.

vant Garde Academy, a charter school in Hollywood, finished up the school year with their annual “Career Day” event. The entire school was extremely excited about the much anticipated day. A wide variety of professionals from various fields were invited to speak to the eager young ones about what they do to earn a living each day and how they make the community a better place. The students were able to hear from a trauma nurse, a firefighter, police officers, a dog trainer, a baker, a pilot, a lawyer, and a 911 dispatch operator. Additional highlights were the Mayor of Hollywood, Josh Levy, and Broward County Judge Melinda Brown and her courtroom staff being in attendance. Mayor Josh Levy spoke to the children about growing up in Hollywood himself, what the community offers, and the importance of being involved. “One of the best parts of being a mayor is participating in career days at our city’s elementary, middle and high schools,” said Mayor Levy. “It always reminds you what the work we do is all about.” Broward County Court Judge Melinda Brown explained how important it is to follow

the laws. Her courtroom staff included prosecutors, her Clerk, Court Deputy, and Judicial Assistant. They happily explained their positions and how a criminal case works. “This was a wonderful experience,” said Judge Brown. “The children are so impressionable and I enjoyed the opportunity to share the positive aspects of following the law as well as the consequences if someone does not.” The students were fascinated with the presentation and took the opportunity to ask many questions. They then practiced their handwriting skills, and wrote about what field they would like to work in when they “grow up”. They also created homemade thank you notes for each speaker which were delivered to them following the event. “The second graders at Avant Garde Academy enjoyed learning about different careers in law enforcement, firefighting, baking, and even dog training!” said Ms. Alana Sultan, second grade Avant Garde teacher. “The program was a great success,” said Lara Leader, Avant Garde Academy volunteer and parent. “It’s wonderful to have so many individuals take time out from their busy schedules to visit with the ‘young professionals’ of tomorrow. It’s exciting to hear what the future generations want to do.”

ichael Schulson, celebrity chef and restaurateur, recently added another restaurant to expand his Schulson Collective portfolio. Schulson’s restaurants span the northern east coast in Philadelphia and New Jersey, but his latest creation is right here in Hollywood at The Diplomat Beach Resort. At the south end of the massive lobby behind the impressive dark wood doors is South Florida’s newest gem, Monkitail. The restaurant recently opened in late spring and serves modern Japanese cuisine. The ambiance in the private main dining area overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is like no other. The leather tufted seating, dark walls, exposed wood beams, and lantern style lighting make for a perfect special occasion dining experience. Surrounding an open robatayaki kitchen in the heart of the restaurant is a 15-seat sushi bar for those looking for a more casual dining option. Tucked away beyond the main dining room is Nokku, a discreet cocktail lounge with four private rooms, each having full karaoke capabilities. Tunes, cocktails and signature dishes are offered late into the night. The space is great for private parties and events, or just after-hours fun until 2:00am. Schulson’s menu is a contemporary take on the classic izakaya, featuring sharable small plates and sushi as well as an extensive list of specialty cocktails, wines and saké. His imagination and vision have made him one of Philadelphia’s most successful hospitality professionals, and he brings that creative flair to Hollywood with Monkitail. Guests may start their dining experience with appetizers such as Octopus Sunomono, Toro Caviar, or Wasabi Ceviche, as well as creative libations like the The Monkitail (bourbon, rye, vermouth, and barrel stowe smoke) or The Monki’s Fist which combines saké with
Celebrity Chef Brings Modern Japanese Fare to Hollywood coconut and pineapple. The selection covers it all on the Robatayaki menu. This method of “fireside-cooking” is similar to barbeque, where items on skewers are slow-grilled over hot charcoal. From vegetables to seafood, poultry, pork, Kobe beef and game, there is a taste for every palette.
“As a student of Asian cuisine, I have always emphasized flavor over fat, and I’m proud to bring that approach to other culinary styles, as well.” MICHAEL SCHULSON
The variety of sushi and sashimi, and hand-created rolls are a sushi-lover’s dream. Specialty sashimi has unique choices such as Salmon Tataki which is made with endives, asparagus, dill and honey Dijon. The side items are also not to be missed; Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Bacon Yakisoba or the Black Cod Fried Rice complement each dish. “To be able to add a restaurant like Monkitail to an iconic hotel in South Florida was a very exciting venture for me,” said Shulson. “Hollywood seemed to really be starving for a sushi concept that focuses on sushi, robatayaki and the type of experience we provide at Monkitail.” Schulson attended and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, working his way up the culinary chain of command in such acclaimed restaurants as New York’s Peacock Alley at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and David Burke’s Park Avenue Café, and Philadelphia’s Le Bec-Fin and Susanna Foo. Before setting out on his own, Schulson helmed legendary kitchens in New York City (Buddakan) and Philadelphia (Pod) and traveled to Japan. He eventually earned the ability to speak conversational Japanese following his stints in prestigious Tokyo kitchens, among them Spago and the Four Seasons Hotel. Today, Schulson is the owner of day-
to-night destination Double Knot; the expansive Independence Beer Garden; Sampan and the adjacent Graffiti Bar; and serves as chef-partner at Izakaya at Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, N.J. Schulson recently opened new-American spot Harp & Crown in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, and now Monkitail in Hollywood, Florida. Monkitail is located within The Diplomat Beach Resort - 3555 S. T
he 2017 Hurricane Season runs through November 30th and this is predicted to be a more active season than usual. Colorado State University expects 14 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes this season, while the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects 11 to 17 named storms this season, more than the 30-year average for the Atlantic Basin. Although there is no strong correlation between the number of storms or hurricanes and U.S. landfalls in any given season, NOAA research has found that the United States averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. That means we need to be prepared. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm.
clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.
What to do as the storm approaches:
▸▸ Secure your home by covering all
windows with hurricane shutters or plywood. ▸▸ Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. ▸▸ C harge your cell phone so you have a full battery in case you lose power. ▸▸ Withdraw cash from the bank. ATM’s will not work in a power outage. ▸▸ G as up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators
What to do now:
▸▸ P ut together a disaster supply
kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information. ▸▸ Make a family emergency communication plan. ▸▸ Register for text or email alert systems for emergency notifications. ▸▸ Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe. Proper tree pruning also increases the likelihood that a tree can weather a storm. ▸▸ Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts and clear any

or gas-powered tools.
▸▸ Fill aluminum or plastic
containers with potable (drinking) water. Plan for one gallon per person per day. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. ▸▸ Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored. ▸▸ Turn on your TV or radio, or check your city/county website, every 30 minutes to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
What to do during the storm: ▸▸ Monitor your radio or television
for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. ▸▸ Stay indoors, preferably in an interior room with no windows. ▸▸ Turn off electricity at the circuit breaker if you notice leaks in the roof or windows or if there is flooding. ▸▸ Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. ▸▸ Avoid using the phone and do not bathe or shower during the storm. ▸▸ Do not go outside during the eye of the storm. The calm is brief. Hurricane-force winds will resume shortly.
updates and instructions. Remain inside until authorities say it’s safe to go outside. ▸▸ Many disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of a hurricane. Watch out for debris and downed power lines. ▸▸ Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away. ▸▸ Photograph the damage to your property to assist in filing an insurance claim. ▸▸ C heck-in with family and friends by texting or using social media to make sure everyone is safe.
WHAT’S IN YOUR KIT?
It is essential that everyone have a well-stocked hurricane supply kit. It should contain enough supplies to sustain you and your family members for three to five days. Here is a basic list of what should be included in every emergency kit: ▸▸ Water -- at least one gallon per
person per day
▸▸ Non-perishable food ▸▸ Non-electric can opener ▸▸ F lashlight, battery-powered radio
and extra batteries
▸▸ Fully charged mobile phone with
charger
▸▸ P rescription medications, enough

▸▸ B aby care items including
formula, baby food, disposable diapers and wipes ▸▸ First-aid kit ▸▸ Personal hygiene items ▸▸ Household cleaning supplies ▸▸ Tools ▸▸ E xtra pair of glasses ▸▸ Pet care items, including food ▸▸ E xtra set of car keys ▸▸ C ash – ATM’s and credit card devices might not be working ▸▸ I mportant documents in a waterproof container including emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (auto, home, life, etc.), medical records, bank

WHERE DO I GO?
If you live in a coastal or low-lying area, you may need to evacuate to an emergency shelter if a hurricane is approaching. Emergency shelters provide a refuge of last resort for those individuals who need to evacuate and are unable to make their own evacuation and sheltering arrangements, such as with friends, family, or in hotels outside of the evacuation zones. The American Red Cross operates the following shelters at area schools:

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Storm conditions can vary in intensity, size and direction of approach, so it is critical that you understand exactly what the forecasters and news reporters are saying and what it means to you and your family. Here is a list of common
The warning can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force. Hurricane Watch – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. Major Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the SaffirSimpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale – A 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Storm Surge – An abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm. Storm surge is often one of the most dangerous elements of a hurricane because the dome of water can be 20 feet high at the peak and stretch 50-100 miles wide.

terminology as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Eye – The roughly circular area of comparatively light winds that encompasses the center of a severe tropical cyclone. The eye is either completely or partially surrounded by the eyewall cloud. Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher. Hurricane Warning – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected somewhere within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds.
Tropical Cyclone – A rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed low-level circulation. Tropical cyclones rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. Those lists are now maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There are six lists that are used in rotation and recycled every six years, meaning this year’s list will be used again in 2023. The only time there is a change in a list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If a name is retired, WMO selects a replacement. If more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur during one season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.
2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Names: Arlene Bret Cindy Don Emily Franklin Gert Harvey Irma Jose Katia
Lee Maria Nate Ophelia Philippe Rina Sean Tammy Vince Whitney
Tropical Depression – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less. Tropical Storm – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph.

P
rospective patients often ask, “Who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result and a disastrous complication. All too often in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is whether their doctor is board certified in Plastic Surgery. Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, do not assume the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise. I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Knee Pain – Do I Need Surgery? BY FELIX M. RAMIREZ, D.O.
physician. Knee pain may vary depending on the location and the severity. Some signs and symptoms may include: ▸▸ Swelling and stiffness ▸▸ Redness and warmth to the touch ▸▸ Weakness or instability ▸▸ Popping or crunching noises ▸▸ Inability to fully straighten the knee ▸▸ Inability to bear weight on your knee ▸▸ Knee feels like it “gives out” ▸▸ Knee feels “locked” and cannot be straightened or flexed ▸▸ Difficulty climbing stairs ▸▸ Visual deformity Many types of minor knee pain may respond well to self-care measures such as icing, wearing a knee brace, and elevating legs at the end of the day. However, in some cases, one may require pain management intervention to relieve the pain. Non-surgical, non-invasive treatments include: ▸▸ Physical Therapy - Strengthening exercises focused upon quadriceps, hamstrings (biceps femoris), and hip musculature can help stabilize the knee and slow or prevent further degenerative changes. ▸▸ Pharmacological Intervention – NSAIDs to reduce inflammation are often prescribed. ▸▸ Corticosteroid Injection – An injection into the knee joint can often provide pain relief. ▸▸ Knee Viscosupplementation – A thick and viscous fluid can be injected in one or a series of injections for pain due to arthritic changes classified as mild to moderate. ▸▸ Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – Nerves are heated using radiofrequency energy in an injectable type of procedure for 90 seconds, with results of pain relief lasting 6-12 months. ▸▸ Amniotic Allograft Injection - Amniotic product morselizes the amnion tissue in an effort to preserve its structural properties in an injectable form. ▸▸ Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) – The patient’s own bone marrow is used to regenerate tissue and create bone formation. Your physician will help you determine which method is best for you before suggesting surgery. Surgery is an invasive and expensive path to pain relief, and is beneficial to only select patients. This is decided on factors such as body mass index (BMI), age, invasiveness, and/or other co-morbidities.

common complaint that affects people of all ages is knee pain. General pain can be the result of various ailments, diseases, injury, or most often normal wear and tear which occurs with aging. Arthritis, gout, and other types of infections are medical conditions that also contribute to knee pain. The knee is made up of ligaments, cartilage, fluid, and bone which all work together. If any part of the knee structure is damaged or diseased, everyday life may be severely impacted. In order to determine the right treatment and recovery method, it’s best to define the exact kind of pain to your

CHAMBER NEWS
Congratulations to Hollywood Leadership Class XLI
T
he Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Class XLI on completing and graduating Leadership Hollywood. Thirty-four graduates were honored last month at The Diplomat Beach Resort. Leadership Hollywood, the Hollywood Chamber’s premier program recognized throughout the county and state, provides community leaders an interactive curriculum where participants can better comprehend the challenges and opportunities the community is facing. The program allows participants to work together, learn through unique resources and services, and improve Hollywood and Broward County. Leadership Class XLI was separated into four community service teams to further enrich the community. Each team worked on a project meant to impact the community and leave a lasting legacy.
PAL Beyond the Bell
The project aims to help the current PAL Project by supplementing the existing structure with a broader range of opportunities for students. A business expo was held on May 17 where children interacted with business professionals and were exposed to career development opportunities.
SPARK Hollywood
The sold out event, held in May, promoted innovation and entrepreneurship for local startups, entrepreneurs, small businesses and inventors in South Florida. The first-time competition allowed contestants to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges made up of business leaders in the community. Stay tune for SPARK Hollywood 2018!
Exceptional Theater Company (ETC)
Community Center Project
Leadership Hollywood XLI raised money for ETC to help fund summer classes, student scholarships, theater props and items. ETC gives individuals with special needs the skills to express themselves through arts and theater.
This group supported the greater Hollywood community by improving the MLK Recreation Center. As result of this project, the MLK Center was able to further expand the capacity of the center and welcome 50 additional students for their summer program. The Center also offers youth & teen basketball leagues, clinics, senior programming and a fitness room impacting many members of the Liberia community.
We are currently recruiting for Leadership Hollywood Class XLII. If you are interested in enrolling in the nine-month program please visit our website www.leadershiphollywood.com. or contact Marie at (954)923-4000.

“Archie”
REAL ESTATE
BY ALEX BRUNO
T
here are some important steps to consider when preparing to list your home. First, it’s very important to select the right agent. Do a bit of research and get some background information which includes a list of the closed sales to ensure that the agent services your area. Also, try and find out the type of results the agent produces a year. The market has dramatically changed over the years, and choosing an international company is becoming an important decision to be considered. A larger company most likely has a number of offices around the world which increases the possibilities to get buyers from out of the county. These potential buyers may be willing to pay more for your property, and also may be part of a referral network. Create a list of questions for your realtor. Ask what they are going to do to sell your house, and how are they going to get the highest and best price. Remember when you hire an agent you’re hiring someone who is going to become a part of your life for the next few months. You need to have chemistry and be sure that this is the right person to do the job for you. As soon as you obtain your realtor, the next step is to prepare your home for sale. My recommendations for doing so are as follows: ▸▸ Lighting is very important, probably the number one detail for having a house prepared to be listed. Make sure it does not show dark. Increase the voltage in the light bulbs. ▸▸ Declutter the entire house. ▸▸ Clean the air conditioning vents and filters if needed. ▸▸ Remove personal family pictures. ▸▸ Remove items from the closets to make them appear larger with more storage space. ▸▸ A lot of details depend on the property but it’s not a bad idea, to have the dining table set for dinner. ▸▸ Fresh flowers and plants are a nice addition. ▸▸ Be sure that kitchen countertops are visible and clear. ▸▸ Remove magnets from the refrigerator. ▸▸ Add a bowl of fresh fruit if possible. ▸▸ If you have an outside living area, open the umbrellas. ▸▸ Pressure clean the patio and if you have a table and chairs, set the table with placemats, creating the atmosphere of people wanting to own your backyard. ▸▸ The entrance is very important. If you have vehicles that are not being used such as boats and trailers, they should be removed. ▸▸ Curb appeal again, pressure clean tile roofs, sidewalks, driveway, if needed. Paint or clean the door of any fingerprints and dirt. A touch of gardening for curb appeal and landscaping is a plus as well. The bottom line is that you want buyers to imagine themselves making your house their home. Alex Bruno is a top producer at RE/MAX 5 Star Realty for 12 years, and is currently a Top 1% Selling RE/MAX real estate owner/agent in South Florida and Number #1 in the City of Hollywood. PET OF THE MONTH
Preparing Your Home for Sale
Archie, a 7-year-old tabby, was rescued from foster care at 6 months old. He adores his human mom and dad equally since they give him lots of love. The frisky feline loves playing with plastic springs and being brushed several times a day. He likes sitting on the screened patio watching birds, squirrels, butterflies, and other cats. He dislikes car rides because typically that is a sign that he is going to the vet or being boarded. He was last seen chasing lizards on the patio.
