id you know there is an election this month? With the country and media so focused on national politics and the federal government’s handling of the coronavirus, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the national economy, it is easy to overlook this month’s primary election. In truth, local elections often have a larger impact on our day-to-day lives than national elections. This month’s primary elections give us the opportunity to select the candidates for Broward Public Schools Board, Florida Senate, Florida Congress, Broward County Sheriff, State Attorney, Broward Public Defender, and a number of circuit judges. The men and women elected to these positions will, in large part, determine how we are policed and protected, and how the state responds to the economic trauma we have endured. The election will be held on August 18th. Early voting begins on August 8th. If you are concerned about coronavirus exposure and have not requested a mail-in ballot, we recommend voting early in the morning during the early voting period. Get out the vote! It is your civic duty and a good thing to do.

Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

POSITIVE PARENTING

A Parent’s Guide to Successful Online Learning BY CASSANDRA FIELDS

O

n July 20th, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Rucie recommended that all Broward students begin the year with online learning only. “If conditions do not improve and continue to worsen, that is the only way we can educate our students while keeping them and our teachers healthy and safe,” Rucie commented, during the 8-minute address. It is almost certain that part or all of every student’s course work at the beginning of the school year will consist of at-home, online studies. We surveyed experts to find best practices to ensure your student will be as successful as possible. Here is what they recommend. 1. Location, Location, Location It is important to establish a consistent routine for your child’s work. Roaming around the house with a laptop or taking ZOOM classroom instruction at the park may seem like fun, but a lack of consistency can lead to distraction. Have your student use the same, quiet place for his/her work each day. 2. Schedule Priorities Maintaining a regular schedule is critical in establishing a healthy learning routine. Like, having a consistent location, “going to school” at the same time each day reinforces the importance of learning. 3. Say No to Phones Perhaps the biggest challenge parents face with online learning is the fact that the primary tool kids use to learn can also be their biggest distraction. Anything connected to the web can be a source of constant distraction. The dopamine feedback mechanisms students get from social media fuel their yearning for more, just like an addiction. Unless your student needs his phone for the coursework at hand, it is best to take it into a different room 4. Inspect, Don’t Expect Unless your child is incredibly organized, mature, and goal-oriented, it will be extremely difficult for her to stay on track remotely. The ever-present guidance of an involved-teacher simply won’t be there. Parents must be more engaged with their children’s coursework today than ever before. The good news is, most schools online tools available for parents to track their kids’ progress in real-time. It’s a good idea to review your student’s work on a weekly basis, or more often. 5. Open Lines of Communication Our “new normal” of education is new to teachers too. More than ever they will need candid, frequent feedback from parents. Make it your mission to have two-way communication on how things are going, and how your child is performing. During these times of great uncertainty it’s our duty as parents to make sure our children don’t lose this precious learning time. Hopefully, by the end of the year, our kids will be back in school full-time. 12 AUGUST 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

eeding South Florida recently unveiled its new, state-of-the-art, 5,000-square-foot community kitchen. Although the kitchen is located in Palm Beach County, it will provide meals to nearly 1.3 million people in the four counties that Feeding South Florida serves (Palm Beach, Broward, MiamiDade, and Monroe Counties). The one-of-a-kind community kitchen is a highly anticipated community resource, with years in the making. On Sunday, July 12th, a virtual grand opening celebration took place via Zoom and Facebook Live. Viewers tuned in to view some of South Florida’s favorite chefs using their talents to showcase the kitchen’s full capacity. They prepared the very first meals in the kitchen using nutritious items regularly distributed by Feeding South Florida, converted into unique, savory, and creative dishes that appeal to the whole family. Chef Ralph Pagano of Naked Taco in Coconut Creek, and Chef Randy Fisher of CREaM in Miami hosted the event. The featured chefs were Chef Lindsay Autry of The Regional Kitchen & Public House in West Palm Beach, Chef Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s Consulting in Hollywood, and Chef Timon Balloo of Balloo Restaurant in downtown Miami. “This multi-purpose community kitchen is a vision that Feeding South Florida has had for quite some time, and we are so excited to finally present it to the community,” said Vélez. “This is just the beginning because the kitchen will serve the community by providing meals, workforce training, catering as social innovation, an incubator for community support, and family cooking classes.” The kitchen will advance Feeding South Florida’s mission of ending hunger in South Florida by serving up to 10,000 meals per day for children’s after-school and summer programs, meals for older adults, and medically tailored meals. The kitchen will also provide critical meals during disaster response. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Feeding South Florida has distributed over 40 million pounds of food (33.3 million meals) in the four counties it serves (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties) in 14 weeks a pace that translates to nearly 150 million pounds over a 12-month period. To put that in perspective, for the entire last fiscal year, Feeding South Florida distributed 62 million pounds (51.6 million meals).

ANSEL & MILLER

Ansel & Miller: Closing the Distance with Kindness

I

n a time where social distance and masks have become a way of life, we sometimes need reminders about the value of personal connections and the importance of revealing our humanity. Recently, the Hollywoodbased law firm of Ansel & Miller did just that with an act of kindness that may just help a deserving young man close the distance between his college dreams and the bright future for which he is destined. Timi Adelakun is the first Black valedictorian in the history of South Broward High School; a distinction supported by his record 5.6 grade point average. While these accomplishments are undeniably impressive on their own, understanding the challenges that Timi has had to navigate, make these achievements even more inspiring. Overcoming Adversity for The American Dream One of three children born to Nigerian parents, Timi’s father was unexpectedly deported back to Nigeria in 2009. After his father was deported, Timi recalls, “My Mom was a single mother, low income earning, and really struggling to make ends meet. We knew the best way to get out of this was through education.” Despite the economic stresses at home, Timi excelled in the college level and AP courses of his high school STEM-focused curriculum. On top of this academic rigor, Timi satisfied his creative passions through his involvement in the Thespian Honor Society/Drama Club. This multi-focused approach to his education will continue for Timi as he prepares to attend Pomona College in the Fall as a double major in Molecular Biology, and yes, Theater. As college draws closer for the valedictorian, financing

Timi Adelakun

his Higher Education has become more urgent. Pomona College has rewarded his academic achievements with a scholarship, however, not everything is covered and there is a funding gap that needs to be satisfied. Enter Attorney Eric L. Ansel and the firm of Ansel & Miller. South Broward Alum Pays it Forward Eric Ansel graduated from South Broward High School as part of the Class of 1966 and in the time since, has become one of the preeminent Personal Injury litigators in South Florida. Despite his success as an attorney heralded for his landmark victories, he has not forgotten where he came from. “Education and mentoring are the ways in which I feel

Eric Ansel

I can best impact my community. I wanted to do something to help. and I just felt the need to encourage him and support his efforts going forward.” stated Ansel, Managing Partner and co-founder of the firm. So, without any fanfare or publicity, he had the firm reach out to Timi to offer him an initial gift of $1000 and a pledge of continued support throughout his college matriculation. So, what does the gift mean to Timi? One of his priorities is a much-needed laptop computer. During the final months of high school, his laptop broke, and with Covid19 forcing schools to go online, he lost access to computer resources at school. With a 2000-word essay due, Timi had

to improvise, “I had no choice but to write the whole thing on my phone, it was a lot, but I managed to get it done.” He credits this resourcefulness to the challenges that he has faced over the years which forced him and his family to do more with less. Though graduating 54-years apart, where there should be a generational gap, now exists a generational bond between Eric Ansel and Timi Adelakun. Ansel & Miller have reminded us that when we take the time to close the distance between each other with acts of kindness, we become better versions of ourselves as we selflessly support those who need it the most, in their quest to become their best.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Get State of the Art Air Purification Systems BY JON DUKA

N

ext time there is a competitive game of four-square at the local Boys and Girls Club, the kids might breathe a little bit easier. They won’t breath easier because the game will be less intense. They will breathe easier because the air they are breathing will be much cleaner. A group of local businesses, led by Air Conditioning Contractor, Air Pros USA,

donated and installed 150 Fresh-Aire UV light systems at 11 Boys and Girls Clubs across Broward County. The systems were installed directly into the central air systems by Air Pros USA technicians. UV light technology compliments air conditioning systems to improve indoor air quality by neutralizing viruses and other microbes as the air circulates through the ventilation system. UV light systems are tested and validated against surface bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus, and have been shown to achieve up to 99.999996% reduction on microorganisms. “The need for quality indoor air is more critical than ever. We are hopeful that our efforts to improve the air in these safe environments will help more families have the confidence to let children return to the clubs and take advantage of their amazing programs,” said Anthony

Perera, founder of Air Pros USA. “We are constantly working to make the clubs safe for children to pursue their passions and this donation gives us peace of mind that we will all be breathing cleaner air as we welcome back kids and teens,” said Matt Organ, co-CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County. “We’re thankful to Anthony and his partners for their generous contributions.” Breath easy, knowing the kids at the local club will be too.

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are

gun ranges and stores frequently dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. Not only will our ventilation system protect you from the toxic byproducts of shooting, but the HEPA filtration and laminar air flow are also superb at affording protection from the respiratory droplets of COVID-19. The air pumped into the range is actually cleaner than the air outside, so shooting with us is actually one of the safer activities you can enjoy during the pandemic. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot

of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

5 Easy Things Families Can Do to Save the Ocean ALISHA OBER, FOUNDER OF SEVEN SEAS ILLUSTRATION

T

he ocean is a wonderful place to explore! Not only is it fun and fascinating, but learning about the ocean helps us to develop care and concern for it as well. Did you know: The ocean covers 71 percent of our planet and amazing new creatures are being discovered every day. It is thought that an estimated 50-80 percent of all life that is found on earth is under the ocean’s surface and it contains 99 percent of the living space on the planet. And yet less than 10 percent of that space has been explored by humans. Isn’t that amazing? Whether you live by the coast or you’re miles from the nearest ocean, there are still things families can do to protect a favorite beach and the animals that call it home. Volunteer for a Beach Cleanup Recruit volunteers- even if it’s just your friends and family- and clean up a local beach, lake, river, stream, or wetland. By spending part of a day picking up litter, we realize the trash in our local water sources will eventually make its way to the ocean. Reduce Your Use of Plastic This is the most threatening issue in our oceans: Most of the trash picked up on shores is plastic, which harms sea animals. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, birds get entangled in fishing line, and animals get stuck in plastic wrappings. Trade in those plastic water bottles in favor of reusable tumblers with lids. Reduce Your Energy Use Climate change is linked to sea level rise and ocean acidification, both of which could drastically affect marine ecosystems. By energy-proofing your home, making sure to insulate properly, keeping your heating and cooling system maintained, and switching to energy efficient light bulbs you’ll help reduce the effects of climate change, and save some money in the process! Eat Sustainable seafood Another way to help the ocean is by paying attention to where your seafood comes from. Overfishing is a global problem, and many common fishing and farming methods result in major habitat damage. One of the simplest things you can do is ask your local grocery stores and restaurants if they sell sustainable seafood. If consumers make it known

26 AUGUST 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

that sustainable food is what they are going to buy, eventually that is what stores will sell! Share with friends One person can make a difference, but think how much greater an impact you’ll have if you recruit your friends to the cause! Tell your friends about the issues and use your social media platforms to raise awareness. About The goal of Seven Seas Illustration is to create beautiful and whimsical illustrations of creatures from the seven seas for children and adults with a conservation twist. Learning about the many species, such as where they live and what they eat, is a great way to understand their place in the chain of life and how we can help them thrive. OVID-19 can spread easily from person-toperson and recent data suggests family gatherings could be playing a significant part in spreading the virus. If you are planning a family gathering this weekend, here are a few things to consider to help stop the spread. All guests should wear masks. Avoid shaking hands and hugging. High-risk family members should stay home and attend virtually. Limit the number of members and households coming together. Stay outside as much as possible. Avoid inside activities such as playing video games or watching TV. Maintain social distance of at least 6 feet, even outside and in the pool. Do not share food.
