QUALIFYING BANKING TRANSACTIONS: • Additional direct deposits • Automatic debits • Point of sale transactions using your BankUnited VISA® Debit Card • Checks posting to and clearing from your account

*A Vertical Rewards Elite Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 2.00% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .50% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. After the Introductory Period, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .50% APY to 2.00% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services (“Qualifying Services”) performed each statement cycle. If the direct deposit and/or the minimum number of Qualifying Services are not met during a statement cycle, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the Base Interest Rate for that statement cycle. APYs stated herein are accurate as of 6/15/2018. APYs stated herein are established by BankUnited, N.A. (“BankUnited”) in its sole discretion and may change at any time. Balances greater than $250,000 are not eligible to, and will not, earn interest or rewards. Minimum opening deposit is $5,000. Transactions must post and settle to the Account during the applicable statement cycle. A $20 monthly maintenance fee will be assessed if the average balance in the Account falls below $5,000 during a statement cycle. A $15 early closeout fee will be assessed if the Account is closed within 6 months of the account opening date. Fees may reduce earnings. Additional fees, terms and conditions apply. It’s Election Time

T

he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States. There are many important issues at all levels of government today. We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same.

! OW N Y L APP E LIN H D A DE . 25T T SEP

The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative. The general election is November 6th. Mark your calendar and remember to make your voice heard and vote! Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet President & Publishers

Event Planning... So Many Questions,

hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...

Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? Do I really need one? 18 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

The saying, "too many cooks in the kitchen" is the result when this occurs. An important detail in the planning process is to be particular about the source you may get a referral from. What's good for one, may in fact, not be good for another. Word of mouth is one of the best assets available, as it's good to hear a great review like going to a movie or a restaurant. Unfortunately, one must remember that there are other factors to consider such as individual tastes and budgets. Contracts, pricing and other factors also vary per event. One

One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. When hiring, keep in mind that you are entering a relationship of sorts, so you want to like who you are hiring. "Personality over price" is usually the way to go. At some point in the planning process, you will be spending much time with these individuals. New Hope for Patients Suffering from Pancreas and Liver Cancer

T

here is NEW HOPE for families of patients undergoing treatment for Pancreas or Liver Cancer. Families that have been told they have no further options can now look into IRE-Nanoknife, a new, minimally invasive, cancer treatment that is showing significant long-term survival. Some Patients have seen a doubling or even tripling of their life expectancy following the procedure, according to recently published reports. During the procedure, fine needle probes are placed throughout the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure no injury to critical structures.

High voltage electrical pulses are then passed through the tumor, killing it. The procedure is preformed, as an outpatient procedure in the operating room, by Dr Robert Donoway, a Sloan Kettering trained Pancreas and Liver Cancer Surgeon and a Pioneer of the technique. Dr. Donoway has been in practice, in South Florida, for over 28 years. He is the former medical director and chairman of the Memorial Health Care and Aventura Hospital Cancer programs and is the former Chief of Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. “The procedure is highly effective and kills the tumor almost immediately,” commented Dr. Donoway, “This allows faster resumption of chemotherapy and radiation, leading to faster and better tumor response to those therapies.” Dr Donoway has performed hundreds of the procedures with many of his patients coming from overseas. He is accepting new patients in their offices at 4000 Hollywood

Boulevard, the iconic Presidential Circle building in the heart of Hollywood. For more information visit: theDonowayCenter. com or ATLASOncology.com or visit Dr. Donoway’ s Facebook Pages at: ATLASOncology- the Institute for Pancreas Liver and Advanced Tumor Ablation. INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

G.I.R.L. Power – Hallandale Beach Police Chief Recognized BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

ater this month Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida will be hosting their second annual “Girl Scouts Lead the Way” luncheon. Three inspirational women of Broward County who are leaders in their industry, role models for today’s girls, and embodiments of the characteristics of a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader) will be honored at the anticipated event. One honoree is Hallandale Beach resident Sonia Quinones. This inspiring individual has more than 25 years of experience in law enforcement and over 15 years of experience in executive leadership that includes selecting, mentoring, placing, and training future law enforcement executives for success. Quinones is currently the Chief of Police for the City of Hallandale Beach. Her career began with the agency in 1993 in which she has held a variety of positions including: Officer, Sergeant, Captain, and Major. Her professional background includes time as a DEA Task Force Agent, conducting wiretap investigations, money laundering and narcotics investigations and undercover work. Additionally, she has a multitude of command and communications experience as well as education and training from the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) National Academy. Quinones first learned about the Girl Scouts when

she moved from Puerto Rico to Miami. She always admired her friend’s Girl Scout sash with all the colorful badges. She was also fascinated about learning how each badge was earned. Although, she always desired to also be a scout, her mother’s work schedule did not allow for it. “I’m extremely humbled and blessed to be honored as a leader and role model for the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. I’ve passionately worked very hard to shatter the glass ceiling to ensure our future generations do not have to bump their heads,” exclaimed Quinones. “It’s an honor to be a part of the Girl Scouts legacy now.” For over a decade, Chief Quinones has been recognized as an inspiration to women in leadership by several South Florida organizations such as the South Florida Business Women’s Association and most recently by the Girls Scouts of South Florida. Chief Q shares her inspiration with programs like the G.L.O.W. Girls of Hallandale Beach to ensure future generations are inspired to lead. In October 2017, the City of Hallandale Beach honored her with a swearing in ceremony in which she joined a select group of Hispanic female law enforcement executives as Chief of Police. “As a young girl in Miami, I always thought the

Hooray for Hollywood! The City is Becoming More Sustainable! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

n case you did not hear, Hollywood Beach joined the worldwide movement to decrease single use plastics. Environmental activists couldn’t be happier when the announcement was made earlier this summer. The City will be enforcing the decades old ordinance regarding bio-degradable products east of the intracoastal waterway. A statement from the City declared, “The City of Hollywood is committed to reducing our environmental impact and becoming more sustainable. One step the City has taken in achieving this goal is to ban the use of nonbiodegradable containers, like plastics and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), for serving food products. Beginning October 1, 2018, according to Chapter 97.05 of the City of Hollywood Code of Ordinances, any establishment located east

of the Intracoastal Waterway selling food intended for consumption by customers off the premises of their business, is included in the ban.” Hollywood’s news comes at a time when other cities, states, and entire nations are committing to decrease their single use plastic. For quite some time, the Broward Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation has been educating the public and campaigning for the city to enforce this ordinance, as well as another ordinance on the books stating that any cafes with tables on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk may not use tableware that can be blown by the wind. “Plastic pollution in the ocean is getting worse every day,” said Catherine Uden, Chair of the Surfrider Broward Chapter. “One way to stop the problem is at the source. You can’t

always stop people from littering, but you can make the litter less harmful.” During this time the ambitious environmental group launched “Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program” in Broward. To qualify to be an “Ocean Friendly Restaurant”, the dining establishments must meet certain environmentally friendly criteria, such as no foam containers, no plastic utensils on site, and no plastic bags. Since the launch, Surfrider Broward has registered five restaurants. The first three restaurants to become involved are Hollywood’s Ocean Alley Restaurant and Beach Bar, Café Club by Les Artistes, and Billy’s Stone Crab. Following their lead are The Parrot Lounge in Fort Lauderdale and Screaming Carrots in Hallandale Beach. “Let’s make sure this gets enforced,” said Hollywood resident Cheryl Goldstein. “Hollywood, this is your chance to pave the way and make a difference!” Learn more by visiting: http://www.hollywoodfl.org/1143/ Plastic-and-Foam-Free-Beach. The 2018 series wraps with two upcoming lectures: “The History of Flamingo Gardens: Not Just Oranges, Floyd Wray’s Vision” and “The History of Hollywood Hoodlums”. The series will then resume in the new year with ten more fascinating sessions.

Speakers will include returning favorites, Patsy West, Susan Berry, Joan Mickelson and Stacy Adams, together with the completed video by the Black Broward Film Project. Topics from new speakers will discuss subjects from growing up in Hollywood,

local landscaping, architectural heritage, and Jewish history to Historic Preservation Month where eleven historic sites will be suggested for listing on the National Register. This past year of lectures included topics from vintage bathing suits and 100 years of handbags to creating a garden of Eden and learning about neighboring communities. On September 9th, Keith Clark, Flamingo

Gardens Managing Director, will share how the popular Davie attraction has ties to Hollywood. The season will conclude with the last lecture on October 14th with Chris Mancini of the South Florida Crime Museum speaking about criminal history. Each of the lecture series is presented at the Stirling Road Branch Library, 3151 Stirling Road, Hollywood. The events are always free and open to the public from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. It is the mission of the HHS to preserve and share the history of Hollywood with the public. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. Firstly, treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity, and secondly restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse®. This volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift that is necessary to diminish the signs of aging hands because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise this product.

This filler acts as a scaffold beneath the skin after it is injected providing the structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months after Radiesse® is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve long-lasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse® raises the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse® is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment which provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft tissue volume loss. Radiesse® doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse® hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse® hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture. ASK THE EXPERT

Fibromyalgia BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. ne of the most difficult syndromes to diagnose is fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the condition cannot be confirmed through a simple laboratory test, or even on an x-ray. A physician must determine the diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms. Because symptoms can occur alone or along with other conditions, it takes time to truly diagnose. Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that affects the muscles and soft tissues. Chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, memory and mood issues, painful tender and/or trigger points are often the most common symptoms. Symptoms may occur after a physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress. However, sometimes symptoms may just develop over time with no specific cause. The American College of Rheumatology says that one of the criteria used as a guideline for diagnosing fibromyalgia is widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months. “Widespread” is defined as pain on both sides of the body, as well as above and below the waist. Researchers also believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. For some reason, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be relieved through medications, lifestyles changes, such as exercise and stress management. Other possible causes can be an underlying problem such as rheumatic diseases, mental health problems, and/or neurological disorders. Your physician may still recommend blood tests to get a complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thyroid function, and vitamin D levels. Additionally, your physician may also perform a careful physical exam of your muscles and joints, as well as a neurological exam to look for other causes of your symptoms. If there is a chance that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend a sleep study. After gathering all the appropriate and crucial information, your physician will be able to assess what may be causing your symptoms and determine and develop an effective treatment plan.

“Chai” Five for Chabad Chayil’s After-School Program BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he 2018-2019 school year has begun along with the chaos of scheduling after-school programs. Working parents often find the afternoons difficult between car-pooling to the activities, completing homework, shopping for project supplies, and then serving dinner. But, for those who live in the Aventura/North Miami Beach area, the #1 rated afterschool program happens to be right in the backyard. Miami-Dade County hired an educational consulting company to rate all county after-school programs, and they rated the Chabad Chayil’s Community Hebrew After-School Program (CHAP) as one of the best. After spending two weeks observing and analyzing every aspect of Chabad’s program, Cynthia Serure, president of A Gift for the Soul, Inc. concluded that program was exemplary. “This program scored at the top on virtually all analytical criteria including quality of staff, student-teacher interaction, and curriculum,” exclaimed Serure. “It is a model program.” CHAP is not just a once a week Talmud Torah class, it encompasses multiple facets in its daily curriculum. Besides teaching Jewish History, Holidays, Traditions & Parsha, they offer Jewish Art, Ceramics, Rikudim, Drama, and assist with public-school homework, as well as options for Music & Chess. 30 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

“My daughter currently attends CHAP and it’s her favorite part of the day,” said Erica Chao whose 5-year-old goes to Highland Oaks Elementary. “CHAP is the best place for kids to get their Jewish education,” added Oren Yehezkely who had 2 children go through the program. “They’re amazing. They do everything for the kids with a lot of passion, but also with a lot of patience.” CHAP is a free Monday-Friday service geared towards Jewish children, ages 5-13, in public schools who have no formal Jewish education. The thriving program is now in its tenth-year at Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, the third-year at Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary and of course, at the Chabad Chayil in Highland Lakes. “A Hebrew School is no substitute for a day-school, but for the thousands of Jewish children attending public schools, it’s their best option. It’s only a matter of funding, and we’ll likely quadruple our enrollment within the next few years” projects Rabbi Kievman of Chabad Chayil. “The Chabad seeks grants and sponsors to subsidize the cost of this amazing program. We want to ensure that every single child has access to a Jewish education. My wife and I want children to know who they are, where they come from, and we want them to take pride in it and love it!”

To learn more about CHAP and other award-winning programs, contact school director Layah Kievman at (305) 770-1919 or visit ChabadChayil.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

School Safety Prevention Tips NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM ccording to the National Safe Kids Campaign, an estimated 2.2 million children from the ages of 14 and under are injured in schoolrelated accidents each year. Though school violence gets major news attention, a child is 9 times more likely to suffer from a school injury than school violence. Therefore, parents can take a few basic steps to ensure a safe school experience even though safety inside school is ultimately the responsibility of the principal and school staff. The following school safety tips are recommended by the National Association of the Principals: ▸▸ Learn the School’s Emergency Procedures: Emergency plans and phone numbers are usually included in school handbooks and posted in classroom. Taking a few extra minutes to familiarize yourself and your child with emergency information can give him/her the confidence he/she needs to act quickly in emergency situations. ▸▸ Know Travel Routes to and from the School: Make sure you and your child know both primary and alternate routes. In an emergency, roads can be blocked, and it is important to have a backup plan. ▸▸ Know and Follow School Security and Safety Measures: These might include signing in when visiting the school, being escorted when walking through the building, or wearing a visitor pass. Following these procedures also sets a great example for your kids. ▸▸ Talk with Your Child about Safety: Talk about instinct and paying attention to funny feelings of fear. Explain what to do if he/she does not feel safe, (find a teacher, call 911, etc.). Make sure she knows how to contact you or a trusted neighbor who is likely to be at home. ▸▸ Inform School Staff about Health and Emotional Concerns: Whether your child has a food allergy, a physical disability, and/or has been subject to bullying, make sure to keep your child’s teachers and principal in the designated loop. ▸▸ Get Involved: Talk with the principal about what you can do to increase school safety, such as organizing parents to form a neighborhood watch before and after school. Sometimes parent groups are highly successful in making improvements in traffic safety during drop off and pick up times. Moreover, additional school-related accidents are school sports injuries. Sports medicine doctors offer these tips to help reduce the number of school sports injuries: ▸▸ Know and Abide by the Rules of the Sport: Kids should also be instructed in how to use the sports athletic equipment properly. ▸▸ Avoid Playing when Exhausted or In Pain: Children should take a break immediately if extremely exhausted or in pain. ▸▸ Keep Kids Hydrated. Make sure there is adequate water or other liquids to maintain proper hydration. Kids need to drink 8 ounces of fluid every 20 minutes. Hydrate more after playing. ▸▸ Insist on a Team Emergency Plan: The following questions must be answered when preparing an emergency plan: What happens if a child is injured? Where is the first aid kit? Who drives to the hospital? Make sure any injured child sees a doctor right away. Back-to-school does not have to mean back-to-worrying. We wish you and your child a safe school year.

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.
