THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-4993 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com. You may also email nanoknifesurgeon@gmail.com.

W

e are now a few weeks into the school year and hopefully your family has adjusted to the new routine. This year, three of our kids are attending Broward County Public Schools for the first time. One thing we have noticed here, that is different than their old schools, is that breakfast is offered to all students every day – and it is free for ALL children. The idea behind Universal Free Breakfast is a simple one: kids who eat a nutritious breakfast will be less hungry and, therefore, better able to pay attention throughout the day making them better students. Making the meals free to all students destigmatizes the situation. Economically disadvantaged kids won’t feel prying eyes when eating the free breakfast and, therefore, will be more likely to eat it. In practice, this is exactly what happens. According to the Food Research & Action Center, children who attend schools that serve universal breakfasts have lower rates of obesity, fewer visits to the school nurse, better behavior, better attendance, less tardiness, and, you guessed it, better test scores, by 17.5%. In fact, students with access to a healthy breakfast are 20% more likely to graduate from high school than those who don’t. So, make sure your children make it to the bus stop on time or get to school a couple minutes early so they can join their friends for breakfast. And tell them to eat up – their education is counting on it.

TEDx Says Hello to Hollywood BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough it was created back in 1984, one of the most current trending items in social media have been TEDx events. TED was born out of creator Richard Saul Wurman’s observation of a powerful convergence among three fields: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. TED is a global community which welcomes people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world to passionately share their ideas on various topics in communities around the world. The nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation has been building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the most inspired thinkers. TEDx events are organized by individuals who want to spark conversations in their own community and Hollywood is fortunate to once again have their second one on Saturday, November 9th at Young Circle ArtsPark in historic downtown. Over 80 applicants have applied vying for time to speak. “TEDx is such an amazing platform for sharing ideas or more information on old ideas that I wanted to ensure that South Florida had a platform to shares these ideas,” exclaimed Andrew Zullo, Executive Director Leadership Broward, and TEDx Young Circle Park organizer. The TED format has become widely popular online

for those sharing “short, powerful talks” that are known for both their depth and brevity. TED talks have reached more than 500 million people via YouTube and through TED and TEDx conferences. In the spirit of the TED and TEDx mission, the Hollywood event will feature “ideas worth spreading” on topics relative to the environment, education and technology and a half-dozen speakers from local academia, government, business and nonprofit organizations. The inspirational group will “dive deep” into areas such as the environment and sustainability, with a specific talk slated on sea-level rise; local educational initiatives; and technology and innovation talks. “South Florida has an impressive wealth of talent and expertise in the areas of environmental sustainability, education and specific areas of technology, such as virtual reality. TEDx Young Circle Park is an opportunity for us to feature some of these local luminaries and let them share their insights and ideas with a local and national audience,” added Marty Shuham President of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the TEDx Young Circle Park organizing committee. Tickets to the live TEDx Young Circle Park event are available at www.tedxyoungcirclepark.com and videos of the presentations will be available on YouTube and TED.com by mid-November.

Enjoy a Taste of Home at RALPH’S INTERNATIONAL MARKET BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

any South Florida residents are surprised when they stumble upon this little hidden gem tucked away off I-95 between Stirling Road and Sheridan Street. Ralph’s International Market is not a traditional supermarket franchise. A matter of fact, it’s far from it. The market is the creation of its owner, Pat Lucci. The retired 2-star Admiral from Buffalo, New York wanted to represent many of the major U.S. manufacturers as well as many foreign manufacturers in his store. The diverse mix makes up the uniqueness of shopping at Ralph’s. Anyone craving a taste of home can most likely find what they are looking for at this international market. Pat Lucci, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Ralph’s International Market took the time to

answer some frequently asked questions about his “super” market. What would you say Ralph’s International Market specializes in? We have the largest variety of imported food products from all over the world. From bakery items to wines and everything in between, one can expect to find the most unique and hard to find items. What is the newest product(s) that you are most excited about? We imported a coffee roaster and espresso machine from Italy to include at our deli/coffee bar. We are happy to serve the freshest cup of coffee, cappuccino or box of coffee beans/grounds you could ever possibly get. We are expanding into smoked meats on premise and have a full line of bakery products and cake decorating supplies. Can customers grab a bite at your store? We have a deli that serves quick, fresh and affordably priced breakfast and lunch and delicious meals for those on-the-go Monday through Friday. If it’s not on the menu we will do our best to create it. Being from Buffalo, New York, do you carry any special items representing your home? Yes! P.J.’s Crystal Beach Loganberry Syrup, Webers Horseradish Mustard, Piccalilli Relish, Anchor Bar Wing Sauce, Ted’s Famous Hot Sauce, Bison Dip,

Chiavettas, Molson, Genessee and Labatts. We also have the infamous Sahler’s Smokehouse Hot Dogs. What are some other specialty items that you sell? We have a top-notch selection of cheeses, salmon, caviar, a large selection of carved meats, olive oils, Hungarian salami, and Turkish coffee. In fact, we can roast and/or smoke anything…fresh turkey, pig, goat, lamb, you name it especially for a special occasion. We also carry Kosher products. Where are your wines from? We offer a large quality selection with great prices. Our Romanian, Bulgarian and Hungarian wine assortment is one of the largest and most popular in the area. What can one expect when shopping at Ralph’s International Market? Our staff is extremely helpful, and we value each customer. Usually after just one visit, customers always come back and become family. We provide an experience when shopping here, a culinary adventure, if you will.

Where Shopping and Working Are Truly a Pleasure – Bethune Students Visit Publix BEVERLY PERKINS

earning for Success (LFS) develops and manages a network of business and community volunteers, teachers, and school administrators from South Florida who collectively implement the Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) program. This is accomplished by recruiting and training business and community volunteers and teachers to help elementary and middle school students relate, connect, and apply what they learn in school to their futures in the workplace,

and in life. The KAPOW program is implemented by a powerful set of in-school lessons about career awareness and workplace (soft) skills taught by volunteers and teachers, field trips to work sites, and curriculum-relevant activities to help teachers incorporate the real-life application of the skills they teach on a daily basis. Publix Super Markets Charities has supported the KAPOW program with generous contributions for many

years and James Gooze happens to be a great supporter. The Publix store manager began volunteering with KAPOW six years ago. Each volunteer and teacher commit up to twenty hours of their time throughout the school year, to prepare and deliver their lessons in the school, and facilitate student/volunteer interactions during worksite visits to introduce students to their jobs. Gooze has taught the KAPOW lessons at Silver Palms Elementary, Pembroke Pines Elementary, and most recently Bethune Elementary. The ambitious store manager invited thirty-two third through fifth grade Bethune Tigers to his Hollywood store at West Lake Commons where they had a roaring good time as they decorated cupcakes in the bakery, inspected currency to check for counterfeiting and worked the checkout lines.

Pictured with Store Manager James Gooze are KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds, Learning for Success President John Casbarro, and Media and Community Relations Manager Nicole Maristany Krauss

The visit was the culmination of career-awareness and workplace skills lessons taught by Gooze at the Hollywood elementary school. The lessons helped students learn about different jobs, the skills needed for those jobs, how to connect their own skills and abilities with a future job, and the skills necessary to be a success in any job, like communication, teamwork, positive work habits, and decision making. “Customer service is a big priority for us,” exclaimed Gooze. “The job skills in the KAPOW lessons are exactly what we look for in our employees, so we’re grateful to take part in teaching these skills to young people who may be our future employees.”

ne of the most difficult syndromes to diagnose is fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the condition cannot be confirmed through a simple laboratory test, or even on an x-ray. A physician must determine the diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms. Because symptoms can occur alone or along with other conditions, it takes time to truly diagnose. Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that affects the muscles and soft tissues. Chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, memory and mood issues, painful tender and/or trigger points are often the most common symptoms. Symptoms may occur after physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress. However, sometimes symptoms may just develop over time with no specific cause. The American College of Rheumatology says that one of the criteria used as a guideline for diagnosing fibromyalgia is widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months. “Widespread” is defined as pain on both sides of the body, as well as above and below the waist. Researchers also believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. For some reason, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be relieved through medications, lifestyles changes, such as exercise and stress management. Other possible causes can be an underlying problem such as rheumatic diseases, mental health problems, and/or neurological disorders. Your physician may still recommend blood tests to get a complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thyroid function, and vitamin D levels. Additionally, your physician may also perform a careful physical exam of your muscles and joints, as well as a neurological exam to look for other causes of your symptoms. If there is a chance that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend a sleep study. After gathering all the appropriate and crucial information, your physician will be able to assess what may be causing your symptoms and determine and develop an effective treatment plan.

ASK THE EXPERT

Which Breast Surgery is right for you? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Hollywood is On the Move BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY ith trolleys being eliminated as of June 30, the City of Hollywood has a new way to get around town! Electric shuttles have been all the rage. People love the convenience of their own cars, so they can go anywhere they want, whenever they want. However, the old trolley service ran on a fixed schedule like a public bus and did not provide the same door-to-door convenience of a car, so people didn’t use it much. Fast forward to the Uber/Lyft ride-sharing age, and voila, the trolley is gone like a dinosaur. However, it’s been replaced by an on-demand “Sun Shuttle” service. The fleet of electric cars circulate in the areas of Downtown Hollywood, Federal Highway and Hollywood Beach. They are ready to pick anyone up who is waving them down, meeting at one of the shuttle stops, or requesting a personal pick-up through the “Ride Circuit” smart-phone app (similar to how one would request the other popular services). The Sun Shuttle is totally free and paid for by the City. Each can take up to five passengers at once. The beach “Shuttle Stops” are the Garfield Street Parking Garage, the Johnson Street Mobility Hub, and soon, the new Nevada Street Parking Garage. The shuttles are equipped with a special area in the back for belongings, luggage, and beach toys. The weekday schedule is Sunday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the weekend schedule is Friday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For more information, please visit the City’s website (HollywoodFL.org) or download the Ride Circuit app to your phone. Getting around Hollywood Beach & Downtown Hollywood has never been easier or more fun. Other things in “Beach News” are new plastic rules. Hollywood has had

W

a beach plastics ordinance on the books for decades. However, for many years, the ordinance was seemingly forgotten. These days though, with all the awareness about how harmful plastics and non-biodegradable polystyrenes are to marine environments, the City is strictly enforcing the ordinance. Code Compliance began with an educational outreach initiative to make sure that our beach restaurants, bars, hotels and convenience stores know what the rules are. The good news is that many beach businesses have been happy to comply. We all share a love for the ocean and want to be good stewards of our natural environment. Plus, these days there are plenty of biodegradable alternatives for things like plastic straws and take-out containers, so it’s not as expensive or impractical for businesses to comply. Let’s save the world, even if it’s one plastic straw at a time. The City of Hollywood government office is located at 2600 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 33020. To contact, please call 954-967-4357, email jlevy@hollywoodfl.org, or visit hollywoodfl.gov. 26 SEPTEMBER 2019 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

HOME & DESIGN

Rescue and Revive BY NEVINE GROULX ETHNICA DESIGNS fter years of use, your furniture will fade in certain areas become torn and lose the padding and springs in its cushions. You can relegate such furniture to the attic, drag it to the curb or get it professionally restored with new upholstery. Or you can take an opportunity to redesign a room in your house by finding a bright bold pattern for your dining chair, armchair, or sofa and then redecorating the space around that piece. Take your old dining room chairs and reupholster them in different colors, fabrics, or a combination of both to create that eclectic bohemian look. Did you inherit that old saggy sofa and chairs? Go ahead and reupholster them and transform them into that modern and contemporary look. Furniture quality and sentimental value are key factors in deciding whether to invest in upholstery repair. Experts say reupholstery can give older quality furniture “a good as new” look. According to highly rated furniture repair companies, a new couch or chair might cost less than reupholstery but does not last as long as older quality furniture. Quality furniture deserves a second chance. Reupholstery gives new life to furniture so go ahead “Rescue and Revive” your old favorite pieces of furniture and try to be creative in doing that or prowl through your neighborhood thrift stores to find that perfect old piece of furniture that can be revived to create a bold statement in your house Consider the following factors when deciding to repair or replace worn couches and chairs: COST OF REUPHOLSTERY: Reupholstery can cost just as much as buying new furniture depending on the work required and fabric used. Fabric drives the cost and the amount of fabric also affects labor costs - more fabric means more labor. FURNITURE QUALITY: Consider keeping that couch or stuffed chair if the furniture remains sturdy with a quality frame. Many manufacturers lowered their standards in recent years to lower the cost of manufacturing, therefore lowering the quality of manufactured furniture. Inspect your old furniture frame and see if it’s sturdy enough to reupholster or replace. REUPHOLSTERING FOR SENTIMENTAL VALUE: Consider keeping and repairing worn pieces of furniture such as antiques or those passed down from generation to generation. Even if the furniture does not have sentimental value, consumers might simply like their favorite sofa or stuffed chair because of comfort or style.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Bullying is a Very Real Problem It’s always a big night when you have this little blue pill.

50 Generic Viagra pills for only $2/pill

1-888-679-5797

BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM Research indicates that 38% of children, ages 12-18 years old have experienced some form of bullying. Bullying can manifest itself in many forms, including physical, social, verbal, and cyberbullying. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) physical bullying takes the form of physical abuse, such as pushing, shoving, hitting, fighting, spitting, and tripping. Threats of physical harm and attempts to force people to act in ways that they would not prefer are also included. Based on facts about school bullies and types of bullying behavior, the NCES reported that there are factors other than physical interaction, such as insults, derogatory remarks, name-calling, and teasing. And also, in this form of emotional bullying, there are also attempts to ostracize the victim, such as being left out or ignored which is sometimes referred to as social bullying, as distinguished from verbal bullying. Emotional bullying can be done in person or online. Cyber-bullying takes place online via emails, chat rooms, social networking services, text services, instant messages, website postings, blogs, or a combination of means. The cyberbullies may conceal their identity so that their victim experiences an anonymous attack. The content of cyberbullying can consist of all types of content mentioned in emotional bullying above, including posting insulting and derogatory comments about someone or sending such comments about someone; sending mean or threatening messages; gossiping about someone online including posting sensitive or private information; impersonating someone in order to cast that person in a bad light. Cyber-bullying is extremely common, and it is one of the hardest types of bullying to spot. So, what should parents know about bullying and what should they do about the warning signs of bullying? The NCES report reveals that: ▸▸ There is noticeably more bullying in middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8) than in senior high school. ▸▸ Emotional bullying is the most prevalent type of bullying. ▸▸ Cyber-bullying is greater in the last three years of high school than in grades 6-9. ▸▸ Most school bullying occurs inside the school, a lesser amount on school property, and even less on a school bus. ▸▸ Middle school students, particularly 6th graders were most likely to be bullied on the bus. ▸▸ Sixth graders were the most likely students to sustain an injury from bullying, with middle school students more likely to be injured than high school ones and the percentage going down every grade from 6 to 12. Bullying, severely, impacts children in the forms from physical pain to emotional trauma. The North Miami Beach Police believes that it is incumbent upon all whether you are parent, or school staff to help those who have experienced bullying. The most important thing for parents to do is to be able to spot signs of bullying and take action quickly, for instance, check your state legislation, and/or your child’s school policies on bullying. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb. com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.

Between visiting all the City of Love’s historic landmarks, shopping in tiny boutiques, and dining on the country’s signature delicacies, Mila Toner posed in the heart of Paris with her little piece of home. The Eiffel Tower and river Seine made a beautiful backdrop for a photo with Our City Hollywood.

SEEN ON SCENE

ROW, ROW, ROW Your Boat

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Fairfax’s historic landing on Hollywood’s glorious beach, the City of Hollywood simulated his heroic arrival on July 20th. So many came out to the seaworthy celebration including Mrs. Fairfax who was given the key to the city by Commissioner Shuham and Commissioner Hernandez along with a plaque which will be installed at Charnow Park on the beach at Garfield Street. Fairfax was the first recorded person in recorded history to row alone across an ocean. Upon completion of his 180-day journey he was greeted with a heartfelt reception in the beloved South Florida city.

EASY BEING GREEN

SPOT ON

Commissioner Nicole “Nikki” Fried visited the Kay Gaither Community Center in Hollywood to get a firsthand look at the Summer BreakSpot Feeding Program. The event was courtesy of the City of Hollywood Commissioner’s Shuham, Biederman, Sherwood and Hernandez, as well as Commissioner Fried. The children took part in building their own “watermelon pizza” snack and visited with DJ’s from 99Jamz.

Over sixty vendors sold and shared plant-based food, cruelty-free body care and clothing, plants, and environmentally friendly wellness products to the nearly 2,500 people who attended the inaugural Plant-Based Festival at Gulfstream Village. See the full story on page 16.

BIG NIGHT OUT

Neighbors, the local police and fire departments as well as other community figures came together for “National Night Out”. The community-building campaign is held the first Tuesday in August every year and promotes police-community partnerships.
