From Samhain to All Hallows Eve to Halloween

D

o you celebrate the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? If you or your kids are dressing up to go trick-or-treating this month you just might. Believe it or not, Halloween dates back about 2,000 years to the area that is now Ireland and the British Islands. The Celts, who inhabited those islands at the time, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. For the Celts, winter was a period of struggle and often death. They believed that on that night the barrier between the living and the dead would open and the ghosts of the dead would return. The Celts burned huge bonfires and wore costumes consisting of animal skins and even heads. Their priests, called Druids, would attempt to contact the spirits and tell people’s fortunes. After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the celebration was combined with a Roman festival that commemorates the passing of the dead, called Feralia. About 600 years later Christianity had spread throughout Europe and Pope Boniface IV established the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day, which was later changed to All Soul’s Day, in honor of the dead. It was celebrated on the same day and using the same customs as Samhain. The Middle English term “All Hallows” which translates to “All Souls” evolved somewhere along the way to the word Halloween. Much has changed over the last 2,000 years. Today, Halloween is a festive time focused more on children’s enjoyment. No longer do adults wear macabre costumes made of animal skins. Rather, the holiday today features excited children dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and superheroes merrily going from house to house collecting bags full of candy. How ever you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it’s fun and safe.

Hollywood Diagnostics Center Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Beverly Perkins

I

t’s no wonder that the Hollywood Diagnostics Center (HDC) has experienced tremendous growth since its opening 35 years ago. The numerous reviews from patients boasting about exceptional care, kindness, and service are what distinguishes the comprehensive diagnostic center from others. Over the years, the center has been serving thousands of patients in the tri-county area. Today, Hollywood Diagnostics Center (HDC) is recognized as a leader in the radiology diagnostics field while performing over 30,000 studies annually. A variety of procedures are offered which include mammography with tomo, CT, PET/CT, High-field MRI, Open MRI, bone density scans (dexas), x-rays, EKGs, echocardiograms, ultrasounds and ultrasoundguided breast biopsies. Furthermore, the center is ACR accredited and all of their studies are read by board-certified radiologists. Stacy Soto, RN MPH and Co-Owner of Hollywood Diagnostics Center recently took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about her facility. What’s new at Hollywood Diagnostics Center? COMMUNITY NEWS

For the Love of Literature – The Little Library That Could BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

nce Upon A Time (in 2009) an individual named Todd Bol wanted to honor his mother, a beloved schoolteacher, who loved reading. So, the Wisconsin resident built a small model of a schoolhouse, filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard with a sign that said, “Free Books”. This concept was the inspiration for “Little Free Libraries”, a nonprofit organization which inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Through the program, millions of books have been exchanged each year increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. “Little Free Libraries” is not a regular library in a large structure with librarians, thousands of books and hours of operation. One doesn’t need a library card either. These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look similar to a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their favorite literature and stories in a fun and unusual way.

Fast forward a decade, and this little library lending program has more than 90,000 registered “Little Free Libraries” in 91 countries with more on the way including the City of Hollywood. The notion, “Take A Book, Leave A Book” couldn’t be simpler. It’s a borrowing system that the community gets to enjoy. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. “The concept of little lending libraries is not a new one for communities. In Hollywood it began as an inexpensive, resident-driven initiative that was

easy for the City to accomplish,” said Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. “New libraries will be decorated by the children in our community and stocked with great reading materials donated by our residents. It’s a true community project that many will be able to enjoy for years to come.” The first library can be found just outside the Art and Culture Center at 1650 Harrison Street. Another can be found inside the Kay Gaither Community Center at 6291 Funston Street. Eight lending libraries are planned for deployment throughout the city. They will be decorated by aftercare students then installed in multiple locations. The next location planned is at Kiwanis Park, 3400 Johnson Street in Hollywood. Additional locations will be announced in the near future. “We are installing a network of free little libraries city-wide in an effort to provide easy access to books for both children and adults,” explained Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood spokesperson. “By providing free access to books the City is not only encouraging residents to enjoy a good read, but also promoting the importance of literacy in our community.”

Banking on a Great Opportunity BY BEVERLY PERKINS

his past summer five local students were selected to join Bank of America’s Financial Center Intern Program. The summer youth employment program is part of a broader work to connect youth to early employment which includes an investment of more than $4 million in grant funding this summer to provide nearly 3,000 jobs for teens. One of these students was Felisha Corilus who began her 8-week summer internship at the Bank of America financial center in Hollywood. The McArthur High School senior learned about the internship through Coach Rashad Troutman at the Rick and Rita Case Boys and Girls Club where she has been a member for five years. “At my internship with Bank of America, I learned valuable skills in customer service by working with and engaging customers daily, how to help customers deposit money on

their mobile devices and general time management,” exclaimed the eager teen. “Overall, it was beneficial and a great opportunity to learn about banking and customer relations.” The unique program is a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County. Its’ main goal is to provide youth between the ages of 16 and 18 with valuable lessons such as how to obtain a job, how to dress for an interview, and how to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Employee volunteers also helped students to learn about the basics of budgeting, savings and managing a paycheck that will help them improve financial management skills. Participating interns made $15 an hour and received the opportunity to apply for a full-time job with the bank. “Beyond providing young people with an opportunity to

gain workforce experience, we’re helping our youth gain a better understanding of their personal finances,” said Lori Chevy, Bank of America Broward market president. “As part of the program, this year five Bank of America Financial Centers summer interns throughout Broward County learned the importance of financial

education and developed valuable skills to help prepare them for success.” “The best part of the internship was assisting the customers waiting in line,” added Corilus. “I was able to assist and save them time by helping them with banking on their mobile device.”

SCHOOL NEWS

Mazel Tov Scheck Hillel Community School BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

check Hillel Community School was recently recognized as the #1 Jewish day school in Florida, in the 2020 Best School ranking by Niche, the largest website for researching K-12 schools. The ranking was earned by a combination of a variety of factors including SAT/ACT scores, studentteacher ratio, reviews from both students and parents, as well as the quality of colleges their students consider. Shortly thereafter, another notable accomplishment was made; Fifty-two 2019 AP Scholar Awards were granted to students in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams. Each student receives a personalized, rigorous college preparatory experience. So, it’s no wonder that Scheck Hillel students go on to Ivy League universities, top public and private schools, yeshivot and gap year programs at many prestigious schools all over the United States including the renowned Yeshiva University. In addition, 71% of the 2019 graduates qualified to receive 4-year scholarships to Florida universities. “We are so proud of this recognition,” said Vanessa

Donaher, Head of Scheck Hillel Community School. “I want to thank and congratulate our students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni. For nearly 50 years,

they have been the source of Scheck Hillel’s success. Guided by shared core values and a commitment to academic excellence that is higher than ever before, Scheck Hillel will continue to serve as a school of excellence for generations to come. Such outstanding academic achievement comes from dedication and commitment shared by all!” The significant amount of award-winning AP

Scholar Awards was a combination of two students qualifying for the National AP Scholar Award (earning an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams), eighteen students qualifying for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award (earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams), eight students qualifying for the AP Scholar with Honor Award (earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams), and the final twenty-four qualifying for AP Scholar Awards by completing three or more AP exams with scores of 3 or higher. “This award really inspires me to work even harder throughout high school, actually, in everything I do,” said Alejandro Wakszol (Class of ‘21). “I am very excited to have earned this recognition. I put a lot of effort into it, and it’s very rewarding to see the results,” added Gabrielle Kurzer (Class of ‘20).

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. n uncommon form of chronic pain is known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) which typically develops after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack. However, the pain associated does not correlate with the severity of the initial injury. This type of pain usually affects an arm or a leg. In cases of injuryrelated CRPS, the syndrome may be caused by the immune system triggering a response which leads to swelling, redness, and warmth. Some believe that CRPS represents a disruption of the healing process. Although the cause of the pain is not understood and there is no cure, early treatment is recommended and found to be most effective. Many patients who undergo treatment see improvement and even go into remission. Complex regional pain syndrome is also called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. The chronic pain condition occurs because high levels of nerve impulses are sent to an affected site. Some experts believe that CRPS is a result of a dysfunction of the central or peripheral nervous systems. It’s been most common in people ages 20-35 and affects women more often than men. Complex regional pain syndrome signs and symptoms may change over time and vary upon the individual. The most common occurrence is pain, swelling, redness, and hypersensitivity in temperature changes such as too cold to touch. An affected limb could become cold and pale over time, and the skin, hair, and nail may change as well along with muscle spasms and tightening. Unfortunately, if these changes occur, the condition is often permanent.

A

Other symptoms may be the following: ▸▸ Continuous burning or throbbing pain, usually in your arm, leg, hand or foot ▸▸ Changes in skin color, which can range from white and mottled to red or blue ▸▸ Changes in skin texture, which may become tender, thin or shiny in the affected area ▸▸ Joint stiffness and damage ▸▸ Weakness and loss (atrophy) ▸▸ Decreased ability to move the affected body part

Occasionally, complex regional pain syndrome may spread from its source to elsewhere in the body, such as the opposite limb. Emotional stress has been known to also worsen the pain. If a person experiences severe and constant pain that affects a limb and makes touching or moving that limb seem intolerable, see a physician immediately to determine the cause and to start treating complex regional pain syndrome early. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

ASK THE EXPERT

BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS reast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons with over 300,000 procedures performed in 2018. The safety and documented positive impact of breast enhancement on an individual’s self esteem has been well documented. However, there has been increasing awareness of a potential long-term complication of breast augmentation with textured breast implants – Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). There are several important facts that all patients should know regarding this disease process. Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a rare and treatable type of T-cell lymphoma that can develop around breast implants. It is not a cancer of the breast tissue itself. The latency of development between implant insertion and diagnosis of BIA-ALCL has been from two to twenty-eight years with a median of eight years. No cases have been definitively identified associated with patients who have had smooth implants. The disease is associated with the increased surface area of textured implants in both saline and silicone implants. The majority of patients present with fluid around the implant as a delayed seroma. The diagnosis is confirmed by aspirating the fluid around the implant under ultrasound guidance and checking the cytology of the fluid. The majority of patients are cured of their disease by bilateral total capsulectomy (removal of the capsule around the implant) and implant removal. Rare patients will present with a mass and have increased risk of requiring radiotherapy and chemotherapy. What causes ALCL? The present theory is that implant texturing, bacteriologic contamination and genetic factors have been implicated and are undergoing further study. Women should not have their implants removed if they are asymptomatic. If a woman experiences a change in her breasts, especially a swelling or lump, she should undergo examination and appropriated imaging including an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration of any fluid around the implant. The current lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL is estimated to be 1:3817 to 1:30,000 women with textured implants. Since the initial case reported in 1996, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recognizes 255 cases in the U.S. and a total of 615 women worldwide as of November 2018. If you have further questions or concerns, please call Dr. Messa’s office to schedule a consultation at 954-659-7760.

B

Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

After the Storm BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY urricane Dorian was one of the strongest tropical cyclones in history, with sustained winds of 185MPH and gusts upwards of 200MPH together with catastrophic storm surge. In South Florida, when new buildings are built, they are required to meet stringent building codes that are aimed at ensuring the buildings are designed to withstand the wind loads of Category 5 hurricanes. The likelihood of such a storm hitting us is an annual crapshoot and luckily not a frequent occurrence, but the risk is real, so we are always wise to build and prepare accordingly. One thing that I’ve observed about major hurricanes is that when such storms make landfall onto populated areas, they forever change not only the landscape of the built environment of those areas, but they also permanently displace thousands of people who have the unfortunate experience of having their homes destroyed by the storm. It takes years for impacted areas to rebuild from a devastating storm, so residents are typically forced to find a new place to live. Twenty-seven years ago, when Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Miami-Dade County, over 15,000 people migrated to Broward County alone. Most of those displaced families settled in southwestern Broward and brought a significant and historic acceleration of population growth to the cities of Miramar and Pembroke Pines. The same occurred with Hurricane Katrina’s devastating displacement of people living in the New Orleans vicinity, where thousands of people ended up permanently migrating to other parts of Louisiana, Texas, and other states. Unfortunately, we will see the same thing happen to the thousands of displaced victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. However, where everyone will resettle is yet to be answered. The human tragedy in the Bahamas will require so much support. I know that all of us understand that because South Florida has already come together to help donate hundreds of tons of relief items to those affected in the Bahamas. In Hollywood, our initial relief donation effort was led by the firefighters and paramedics of Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety, who facilitated the collection of an unprecedented amount of community donations. We filled over six shipping containers filled with thousands of items that are needed by the hurricane victims and delivered them to Port Everglades for shipment to Grand Bahama in coordination with the Bahamian Consulate. As Mayor, I am grateful to everyone who donated and volunteered. Last, and it goes without saying, that for the remainder of this hurricane season and for every season to come, Hurricane Dorian reminds all of us to take hurricane preparedness most seriously. That counts for how our city government prepares the city for a major storm as well, and how all of us take the necessary precautions to be safe during a storm.

HOME & DESIGN

The Art of Wall Art BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGNS

T

oo often in interior design we see wall art treated as an afterthought. It’s what gets dealt with last, long after the final coat of paint has dried on the walls and all of the furniture has been artfully arranged. But, I’m here to argue that by relegating wall art to the sidelines you’re missing out on an amazing design opportunity. When chosen thoughtfully, the right wall art or piece can provide for the entire room. Wall art doesn’t have to be the last piece of the puzzle when you’re decorating a new space. In fact, it shouldn’t be. It is most important when it comes to interior design because when it’s used properly wall hangings can provide an excellent framework around which one should be able to plan the rest of the room accordingly. Choosing a color palette can be one of the most daunting facets of designing your interiors. The number of varying shades of paint that are available at local home improvement stores can seem absolutely endless. It can be difficult to narrow down the possibilities into the colors that best fit your vision for the space. My advice is to leave the paint chips behind and focus on searching for wall art instead. Once you find a painting or a unique wall hanging that you absolutely love, you can use that piece as the inspiration for your room’s eventual color palette. Your first step is to pick out two or three shades from the wall art that you like to incorporate into your decor and then choose the dominant color as well as few additional shades that you’d like to pull out as accents. After that selection is complete, you may then look for those colors in the items you use to decorate the rest of the space. One of the most basic principles of interior design is that every room needs a focal point or a single design element that will instantly draw the eye into the space and give the viewer a sense of what to expect. Remember that not all wall art is created equally. Sometimes you need to think outside the frame. Try to find a variety of different forms and shapes. In addition to paintings and prints, one should consider pieces such as sculptures, 3D wall art, and 3D wall panels that can add glamour and depth to the room. Choosing the right piece is elemental in provoking conversation and setting the feel or vibe of the space. Wall art is that finishing touch that can help pull a space together and make it feel complete, it’s the icing on the cake in any home. It’s that little extra touch that can take your space from simply looking functional to appearing as if it should grace the pages of an interior design magazine. Nevine Groulx for Ethnica Designs has been designing interiors for 15 years. She received her interior design certification from Smart Majority School of Design in England and has been a prominent and well-known designer in Canada for the past 15 years. She now resides permanently in South Florida and can be reached at 954-600-0401 or by email ethnicadesigns@hotmail.com.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Halloween Celebrations and Safety Concerns BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

T

raditionally, Halloween brings a flurry of activities and can be the spookiest night of the year. Halloween celebrations are fun times for children to enjoy the magic of trick-or-treating, visiting neighborhood haunted houses, dressing up in costumes, and eating yummy treats. However, some of the scariest issue’s parents may face are an overabundance of sweets and safety issues. The National Safety Council research reveals almost 18% of pedestrians’ deaths in traffic or non-traffic incidents occur at road crossings or intersections. Lack of visibility, due to low lighting at night, plays a factor in those deaths. Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween as on any other day of the year. According to the “Injury Facts”, 7,450 pedestrians died in traffic or non-traffic incidents occurring on driveways, in parking lots, or on private property. The American Academy of Pedestrians believe that there is a fine line between Halloween fun and safety concerns, especially when it comes to road and pedestrian safety; therefore, they compiled some commonsense safety tips to help ensure that both parents and children have a safe holiday. Before Halloween arrives, be sure to choose a costume that will not cause safety hazards. ▸▸ All costumes, wigs, and accessories should be fire-resistant. ▸▸ Avoid masks, which can obstruct vision. ▸▸ If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks. ▸▸ When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first. ▸▸ Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation. ▸▸ When children are going trick-or-treating… ▸▸ A responsible adult should accompany young children in the neighborhood rounds. ▸▸ If your older children are going alone, plan and review an acceptable route. ▸▸ Teach your children never to enter a stranger’s home or car. ▸▸ Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well–lit areas and stick with your friends. ▸▸ Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home. ▸▸ Children are reminded to keep heads up and walk, do not run across the street. ▸▸ National Safety Council offers these additional safety tips for parents and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treating hours: ▸▸ Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. ▸▸ Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully. ▸▸ Later in the evening watch for children in dark clothing. ▸▸ Discourage new and inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween. The North Miami Beach Police Department subscribes to these Halloween safety tips and endorses the responsibility of simultaneously conducting high visibility patrol, ensuring a safe Halloween for all children. During the annual Pumpkin Patrol event, the officers’ patrol cars will be adorned with Halloween patches and they will pass out candies to children trick-or-treating in costume in exchange for sweets. The Pumpkin Patrol event is a true child-friendly event; it is more about costume, sweet treats than ghosts and goblins To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com.
