COMMUNITY NEWS
Hollywood’s Cardboard Regatta Was Smooth Sailing BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n 2008, The Cardboard Boat Race in Hollywood was created to bring the community together for a fun family-friendly event while showcasing the City of Hollywood Marina’s facility and amenities. The festivities were initially organized by the marina staff, but within three years the race grew, and the Hollywood Special Events team was brought in to share the responsibility while the Marina then transitioned to become a division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. The anticipated annual event at the Hollywood Marina continues to grow due to the support of participation from many community organizations, increased promotion for the event to outside agencies, schools and community groups, conservationists, activists, public figures, and of course, boat-loving residents. The reformatting of the event in regard to the schedule, racecourse layout and event categories has also been a big factor to engage more participants. During the first 3-4 hours, participants get into the competitive spirit by constructing a boat out of cardboard on-site for their team. They may also be constructed off-site, but competitors find it more exciting to design, construct, paint,

and name their vessels with their fellow mates all in an effort to win the title in the many fun categories. But it’s the coveted trophy that everyone paddles for. “It doesn’t take long for wet cardboard to sink, but with expertly applied duct tape in strategic locations, crews can make a sea-worthy vessel float just long enough to make their way around the aqua course,” explained Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Communications Manager. The recent 2019 race was the largest attendance to date with 45 crews entering the races. Out of 45 boats entered, 16 stayed afloat until the end and were the “Last Boats Sailing”. This year’s winners in the “Most Creative Design” category went to 1st place – S.S. Georgie, 2nd place – Checkmate, and 3rd place – Pineapple Express. The “Fastest Vessel” went to Poseidon’s Kiss while the “Most Spectacular Sinking” went to The G-Raft. “People’s Choice” awards were 1st place-Be Bold, 2nd place Surf Raiders, and 3rd place- Tiki Troopers. “The Cardboard Boat Race is a fantastic community event that brings friends and families, area schools, clubs and organizations, and land lovers together for an exciting day of good-natured racing competition on the water,” added Hussey.

ASK THE EXPERT
Cooled Radiofrequency Ablation BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. hronic pain is defined as a long-standing persistent pain which continues beyond a usual recovery period or one which accompanies a chronic health condition. However, this type of pain differs from regular pain which simply goes away once the injury is healed. Chronic pain has nerve signals continually firing up after one is healed. This type of pain often prevents individuals from working, participating in physical activities, and just enjoying life. Many physicians define chronic pain as pain that lasts 3 to 6 months. During this time, they may offer and suggest treatments for such discomfort including medications, physical therapy, and even surgery. But when all methods have failed Cooled Radiofrequency Ablation (CRA) may be a great option and the best possible solution for the medical issue. Back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the United States. Typically, a symptom of a medical condition, back pain can occur in several locations including the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar areas. The other common area of pain is in the knee. Knee pain can be caused by a variety of things such as bone spurs, worn-away cartilage, or cartilage fragments in meniscus fluid. Osteoarthritis damages the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint allowing the bones to rub together causing pain and stiffness. Although the disease occurs most often in older people, younger people may be susceptible after a joint injury. CRA is a minimally invasive treatment option which can bring non-surgical relief to those suffering from chronic pain, especially in the back and knee, without the use of narcotics. This option targets the nerves that transmit pain signals.
C
An insulated electrode, or probe, is placed within the tissue which a radiofrequency generator then transmits a small current of RF energy through. The iconic heating produced by the friction of charged molecules thermally deactivates the sensory nerves responsible for sending those pain signals to the brain. Those who are candidates for the pain-reducing CRA procedure are those who have had chronic pain for at least three months, do not want to take pills regularly, and are not ready for surgery. As with anything else, your physician will discuss all the risks and potential complications when using such a device. Only a qualified physician can properly diagnose the medical issue and recommend appropriate treatments. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Hollywood Wraps 2019 with Many Improvements BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY
D
2019
ecember is already here, and it means lots of things. Hurricane season just ended. The fall king-tide season is past its peak. The City’s 2020 budget was passed and is balanced, and the holiday season is in full swing. We have lots to be thankful for, and I hope everyone gets a chance to spend some quality time with friends and family this holiday season. Shifting gears to the challenges on our shores, this year’s fall king-tide season is proving to be one of the most frequently high tidal seasons to date, and it serves as yet another wake-up call to all local, state and federal agencies that we have important short and long term work to do to shore up our defenses against sea level rise. In Hollywood Lakes and Hollywood Beach, most of the saltwater that rises onto the streets emanates from the city or A1A stormwater systems, and our new city utilities director is actively working with FDOT and vendor counterparts to implement the system modifications necessary to prevent the water from coming up though the stormwater outfall pipes in the frequency and levels that we’ve seen so far this year. Our new public works director is also implementing interim solutions to prevent water from coming onto the streets by topped-out shorelines, while our design and construction management team is working on the permanent GOB funded seawall project for the North and South Lake area. In addition, we are in construction on raising the Polk street boat ramps through a partial state grant that Broward County assisted us in getting, to prevent the tides from rising over onto land. Speaking of roadways, as everyone knows, we have lots of state and federally funded projects taking place throughout our city right now. The latest completion date for FDOT’s A1A resurfacing project extends through January, and the powerline burial project will follow. Hollywood Boulevard’s complete streets project between City Hall and Downtown Hollywood is wrapping up. I-95 is just getting started. State Road 7 will see a state landscaping project start soon, and Park Road and 56th Avenue are undergoing a federally funded sidewalk and bike lane project. In all these projects, where trees are being removed, know that the City is requiring multiples more replacement trees be planted throughout the city to replace those removed. It’s a dusty and bumpy slog through these projects, but in the end, we’ll have renewed gateways to serve us for the decades ahead. Lots more is in the works, with K-8 school proposals, playgrounds, sports field improvements, the Neighborhood Pride Program, opening the new Fire Station 45 on 64th Ave, acquiring new ambulances and fire trucks, the homeless task force, water-main and sewer utilities installations, continuing city process improvements, ordinance reforms, new business openings, and more. Thank you for doing your part in supporting the improvement and success of our city through the upkeep of your own property and supporting our local economy by shopping and dining locally this holiday season. Best regards and wishing you and your family a joyful holiday season, Josh Levy, Mayor The City of Hollywood government office is located at 2600 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 33020. ASK THE EXPERT
Do Your Hands Give Away Your Age? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in the rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a telltale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. Firstly, treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity, and secondly restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse®. This volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift that is necessary to diminish the signs of aging hands because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise this product. This filler acts as a scaffold beneath the skin after it is injected providing the structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months after Radiesse® is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve longlasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse® raises the skin level so that tendons, joints, and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse® is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment that provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft-tissue volume loss. Radiesse® doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse® hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse® hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Holiday Safety Reminders No Matter Where You Live BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM uring the season of giving, police in the City of North Miami Beach deem it necessary to offer some holiday advice in different areas of concern such as online shopping, shopping in-store, personal safety, home safety, and at automatic teller machines. Every year, ahead of the holiday season, the police provide residents with a few security pointers on how to take some basic precautions to ensure that their families remain safe and injury–free throughout the season. Holiday shopping is an exciting time! Unfortunately, there are thieves willing, ready, and able to steal our holiday cheer as they prey on those who are not paying attention. Therefore, to reduce your risk of becoming a victim of holiday crime, the North Miami Police will be increasing neighborhood patrols featuring a high-visibility patrol effort in shopping areas throughout the city. Online Shopping ▸ Make sure the site is secure. Only use well-known, trusted sites for online purchases. ▸ Never use public WIFI. You have an increased risk of cyber criminals getting your information this way. ▸ Keep an eye on your online banking and credit card statements to ensure your card information has not been stolen. Shopping in Store ▸ Limit the amount of cash you carry. Try to use debit or credit cards. ▸ Keep your cell phone in a pocket rather than your purse. ▸ Be aware of your surroundings. ▸ Park in well-lit areas. ▸ Always store your valuables out of sight. ▸ Lock your car and make sure your windows are up. Take all keys. ▸ Consider making your most expensive purchases last so you can head straight home with them. ▸ Have your keys ready when you approach your car. ▸ Personal Safety ▸ Women should hold purses close to their body with the opening closed. ▸ Never leave your purse in the shopping cart, even if you close by. ▸ Men should consider keeping their wallets in their front pocket rather than hip pockets or jackets. ▸ When walking with someone else, women should keep the purse between you. Home Safety ▸ If you have a burglar alarm, use it, even if you only intend to be away for a few moments. ▸ Remember that after Christmas those fancy boxes stacked in your trash area are billboards for thieves who now know what items are in the home. ▸ Never have packages delivered to your home when you are away. ▸ Automatic Teller Machines ▸ Try to withdraw money only in daylight hours when people are around. ▸ Limit afterhours ATM use to those in well-lit, public area. ▸ Have your card in hand, conduct your transaction, and walk away quickly. ▸ Never leave your receipt in the machine. In general, awareness is your best protection. Do not think twice about calling the police if you see something suspicious. If you are a victim of a crime, try to remain as calm as possible, remembering every detail you can. The North Miami Beach PD wants you to have the merriest of holidays. Enjoy a safe holiday season.
