Hurricane Season is Here Again

2

017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.

SUPERMAID WE’LL SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET

It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

COMMUNITY NEWS

Farmer’s Market on Wheels – Volunteers Bring Fresh & Healthy Food to Those in Need BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

s part of their company’s culture, Bank of America recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their Global Service Month. Service in the community is an important opportunity for the company to build momentum around volunteering for the rest of the year. Volunteerism supports Bank of America’s approach to responsible growth in effort to build a more sustainable community. On April 13, Bank of America employees from across Miami-Dade and Broward counties came together in Hollywood at the Community Enhancement Collaboration on Wiley Street for a day of service, collaborating with Feeding South Florida (FSF) for a “farmer’s market” style food distribution. Using FSF’s innovative mobile food pantry – one of the ways FSF helps to eradicate food insecurity in South Florida – the event aimed to give residents a chance to gather fresh and healthy produce to help feed their families in areas that have been deemed “food deserts”. “Feeding South Florida is grateful for our long-standing partnership with Bank of America, which helps us set the table for more than 710,000 individuals

in need of food assistance” said Paco Velez, Feeding South Florida President and CEO. “Their commitment to basic needs, volunteerism, and overall com-

munity support is essential to changing lives one meal at a time.” The occasion coincided with Bank of America’s 10th annual Global Service Month when bank employees dedicated more than 2 million hours globally and 40,000 hours locally to volunteerism. Bank of America also awarded Feeding South Florida with a $38,048 check, which was raised during the 2017 “Give a Meal” campaign. “It’s a privilege for us to stand alongside Feeding South Florida to distribute food to residents in Hollywood,” said Lori Chevy, Broward County market president for Bank of America. “This is just one example of the many community events Bank of America employees will be volunteering at nationwide as part of Global Service Month.”

The House That Henry Built – Carpenter House BY BEVERLY PERKINS

B

uilt in 1941 by Henry Godfrey Carpenter Jr., and his first wife Rachel Clews Carpenter, the Hollywood beach house was one of the first residences established on northern Hollywood Beach, where it sits alongside what has become the Hollywood Broadwalk. In 2009, the county commissioned a survey of the parcel, and the report determined that a portion of the house’s interior qualifies for a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic house has been described by the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy, Inc as “an interesting example of a beach home of its period, architecturally forward-thinking.” The site itself has ecological significance because it includes remnants of a beach dune community and a maritime hammock, both of which are ecosystems identified as imperiled by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory. The property comprised of three buildings totaling 4,400 square feet on approximately .54 acres includes a two-story main house, an artist’s studio, and a beachfront cottage, is also the home of the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC). The MEEC is a collaboration between Broward County Parks and Recreation Division and Nova Southeastern University’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. Their mission is to provide outstanding marine education, interactive learning, and research with a focus on endangered sea turtles. Additionally, the center continues to increase conservation awareness by engaging visitors and residents alike.

The MEEC’s main attraction is Captain, a green sea turtle who was rescued after being struck by a boat and taken to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, where she was treated and rehabilitated. She was then released almost 3 years later, and unfortuCaptain the Sea Turtle nately stranded again. Luckily, she had been identified by her tracking tags and sent to the MEEC where she resides as a permanent resident. Along with Captain, the MEEC features an interpretive center with interactive displays on subjects ranging from sea turtle conservation to marine debris. housands of horse race enthusiasts, spectators, and those who just wanted to see and be seen came out to Gulfstream Park in late March for the 67th Annual Florida Derby. The much-anticipated event drew many to the world-class Thoroughbred horse racing track in Hallandale Beach. South Florida’s biggest race day of the year showcased the world’s best horses and jockeys who all competed for the coveted title of Florida Derby Winner on their road to the Triple Crown. However, these talented jocks weren’t the only ones competing in the week-long celebration, another competition took place in the Walking Ring. This competition included some dedicated individuals parading around the ring showing off their fancy headwear. One of the many unique characteristics of a day at the races is fashion. Those in the know, know that all bets are off if one does not come properly dressed for the glorious occasion. Many fans

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Flaco’s Community Gym Takes F.L.I.T.E. BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

any locals have heard about Jose “Flaco” Perez and his Hollywood gym. Inspired by the community-based boxing gyms in Brooklyn where he grew up, Flaco’s Community Gym is exactly that…community. It’s a gym which focuses not only on fitness and strength, but also on family and the opportunity to transform lives regardless of age, gender, race, religion, and social-economic status. Since the day Flaco opened the gym in 2014, his mission has been to give back to the community. From the many Thanksgiving food drives, Back-to-School events, car wash fundraisers, and bicycle giveaways to his latest philanthropic venture F.L.I.T.E., Flaco continues to help others and has no plans on stopping. Fort Lauderdale Independence Training and Education (F.L.I.T.E.), a non-profit organization, helps older children and young adults who are phasing out of foster care and moving forward to becoming positive contributors to society. Earlier this year, Flaco met with F.L.I.T.E. Director of Development, Luis Rosario and they instantly connected and brainstormed on how to partner. F.L.I.T.E.’s Director of Programs, Cara Malavae then stepped in to start the groundwork for the partner-

ship logistics. As always, Flaco went running with the idea and reached out to some of his associates and fellow small business owners to become sponsors. “As of right now we have three companies sponsoring a total of five participants, A-Rose Installation, ACG Consulting and Therapy Corp, and Patrick Regalado and Brown Marketing Consultants. The program has taken FLITE and the participants are already reaping the benefits of commitment and

dedication,” exclaimed Flaco. Sponsors cover half of the membership for each young adult, and Flaco himself will sponsor the other half of the membership. Although, the program is in its early stages, Flaco has taken the essence of the program and is attempting to expand on it. He is in the process of adding an extension to the program by bringing in a financial advisor a few times a week to further mentor the participants in the program about life skills that may help them to become successful transitioning into adulthood. He also recently met with Mark Dhooge, CEO of K.I.D. (Kids In Distress) and hopes to start working with younger foster care children who reside in the Hollywood and Ft. Lauderdale areas. “I believe that we can help relieve some to the psychological trauma associated with the effects of growing up in foster care or without the luxury and structure of a stable household to grow up. As a registered nurse, I also know that with exercise the body’s blood-flow is increased as well as endorphins that are known to combat depression, anxiety, and PTSD,” added Flaco. For more information and to learn how to get involved, please contact Jose “Flaco” Perez at TheFCG@yahoo.com or 786-319-8918.

ulie Frans, director of community and culinary at Wynwood Yard, introduced a new menu item to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) as apart of Wellness in the Schools (WITS) “Chefs Move to Broward” initiative. Wellness in the Schools is a national non-profit that teaches kids healthy habits to learn and live better. They partner with public schools to provide nutrition and fitness education, healthy scratch-cooked meals and active recess periods. Trained culinary graduates partner with cafeteria staff to feed kids real food, and fitness coaches encourage schools to let kids play. The goal with this approach is to improve student outcomes and drives systemic, long-term change, shifting school cultures and ultimately fighting the childhood obesity epidemic. Each month “Chefs Move to Broward” brings a local chef to introduce a new menu item for the BCPS lunch menu in a continued effort to serve Chef Julie Frans of della bowls and The healthy meals to students. Wynwood Yard The WITS chef will cre-

ate the featured entree and train the cooks how to prepare the food for continued implementation in the schools’ cafeterias. Chef Julie Frans cooked roasted vegetables for students at Watkins Elementary School in Pembroke Park. Her goal was to emphasize and teach students the importance of incorporating locally-sourced ingredients into their everyday meals, from the farm to the table. “We’re really about making healthy food accessible and making sure that people are educated about why to eat good food, where healthy food comes from, and of course, we’re really about making healthy food taste good,” exclaimed Chef Frans. “We’re encouraging kids to try new things and eat with the rainbow.” These little Panthers had the opportunity to taste roasted farm-fresh cauliflower, green beans, and butternut squash. The results were surprising as many think kids don’t and won’t eat vegetables. “I had to say it’s pretty good [roasted vegetables]. I’ve tried multiple green

It tasted like Asian food, and Asian food tastes good,” exclaimed Matthew Darby. “If you learn to try new foods and vegetables, they taste very good if you cook them the right way.” “My favorite was the green beans because they were nicely salted, and all the vegetables were very pleasurable,” added Mia King. “The chef taught me a lot of new things like to try new food and that vegetables, and even fruit, are good for your healthy and body.”

South Broward High School Students Receive Arts for the Future Scholarships he had the luxury of traveling to many sets while learning along the way. “I met accomplished directors and producers and learned about their styles and their work.” said Bedell-Grefe’. “I want to follow in my parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in film.” Lastly, scholarship-winner Megan Luechauer, a student with an art emphasis in music, says that in addition to academics, music has always been in her life. “Throughout the years, my work ethic would not have developed without the discipline that practicing showed me. Music positively influenced me and created a ripple effect in my life,” exclaimed Luechauer. The scholarships will allow the talented seniors to continue their studies in the visual, performing and technical arts at colleges, universities and educational training institutions.

s the 2017-2018 school year was wrapping up, thirty seniors from ten Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) received Arts for the Future Scholarships during the 19th annual Stars on Parade extravaganza at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, including three from South Broward High School. Fiona Kelly, a South Broward High School student with an emphasis on Visual Arts, was surrounded by art growing up since both of her parents were artists. She immediately shared the same passion as her parents (and clearly the same genes) and won her first art contest at the young age of three. The ambitious child even sold sketches she created with crayon in her grandmother’s gallery for a quarter. Fast forward to high school and her desire to learn more about art grew. She enrolled in all the art classes she could take and became the president of the National Art Society. “My passion for the arts combined with the desire to spread the importance of the arts when they are so

any individuals suffer from chronic and acute conditions such as headaches, neck/back pain, fibromyalgia, facial pain, and sciatica to just name a few. Unfortunately, for quite some time there has been a lack of understanding in regard to chronic pain which has led to poor treatments and even worse outcomes. Neck pain is an extremely common area in which many experience discomforts. There are three general types of neck pain; ▸▸ Acute – Pain which lasts less than 4 weeks. ▸▸ Subacute – Pain which lasts 4-12 weeks. ▸▸ Chronic – Pain which last 3 or more months. ▸▸ Most who suffer from acute neck pain don’t even know what caused the issue, and oftentimes don’t even seek treatment. However, when the neck pain becomes subacute or chronic, then it’s likely that some form of medical guidance and/or treatment is required. Depending on the cause and conditions, there may be specific ways for effective treatments. These recommended tips can help prevent neck pain, and may also help alleviate any symptoms occurring:

Stay Hydrated The discs between the vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck) are comprised of approximately 80 percent water at birth. However, as one ages the ratio of water decreases, which can cause the discs to lose height, the spine to come out of alignment, and the pressure on the spine to increase. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs, therefore eliminating neck pain. ▸▸ Set a daily water goal. Women typically need 2.2 liters, while men need 3 liters. ▸▸ Keep a reusable water bottle nearby at all times. ▸▸ Create new daily habits such as drinking a full glass of water when waking up each day.

Limit Hand-Held Phone Use A common habit many don’t even think about, but do all day long is cradle a phone in their neck while talking. This results in extra strain on the cervical spine. Also, many add additional stress on the neck by staring down at their phones for an extended period of time. This habit can, in fact, place up to 60 pounds of pressure on both the neck muscles and ligaments. ▸▸ Use a Bluetooth or hands-free headset. ▸▸ Hold the phone near eye level when texting or reading. ▸▸ Limit phone use when possible.

Apply Heat Therapy Good old-fashioned advice is to not overlook the benefits of heat therapy. Applying a heating pad or a hot water bottle for 20 minutes may produce the following benefits: ▸▸ An increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles encourages healing in the neck. ▸▸ The stimulation of sensory receptors in the skin hinder the transmission of pain signals to the brain. ▸▸ The stretching of soft tissues around the spine will decrease stiffness in the neck. It is suggested to try these tips even with severe neck pain, as they can provide even a little bit of relief from chronic symptoms. Felix M. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

It’s Never Too Early to Prepare for Hurricane Season! BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY

A

s we saw last year, a hurricane can cause major headaches for you and your family - power outages, long lines at gas stations and supermarkets, limited medical supplies, not being able to stay informed, etc. The best way to minimize these and many other problems is to be prepared. The least stressful way to be prepared is not to wait. Sit down with your family and plan for your essentialssuch as how much water your family needs, where you will go if you need to evacuate before a storm hits and how to stay in contact with loved ones. Download the 2018 Hurricane Preparedness Guide on the city’s website www.hollywoodfl.org to obtain important information including contact numbers and generator ready gas stations. Here are some important points to consider: ▸▸ Plan on being self-sufficient for at least three days after a hurricane hits. Emergency crews and government agencies will likely be tending to the hardest hit areas. You should not rely on their assistance immediately following a storm. ▸▸ Do you live in an evacuation zone? Do you know where to go if an evacuation order is issued for your area? Only go as far as you need to get to a safe location. Driving long distances is not advisable. Storms may change direction at any time, and scattered debris may make returning extremely difficult. ▸▸ Going to an evacuation shelter should be considered a last resort. They can get full and do not have the comforts of a friend or relative’s home. ▸▸ Establish reliable emergency contacts inside and outside our region to ensure your loved ones know the status of you and your family. ▸▸ Have a relative with special medical needs? Be sure to make appropriate arrangements. You can register them for accommodations at a Special Medical Needs Shelter. To request an application for a Special Needs Shelter and/or Paratransit evacuation transportation, including applications in alternative formats, call Broward County Emergency Management at 954831-3902 TTY 954-831-3940. ▸▸ Need prescription medication following a hurricane/emergency? Call 1-866-247-2694 to learn what pharmacies are open in your area during an emergency. ▸▸ Make sure you have enough food and water for your pets and keep them indoors during a storm. If you have to evacuate and need to place your pet in a pet-friendly shelter, please call the Humane Society of Broward County at 954-989-3977. ▸▸ Have questions about government services before, during and after a hurricane? Call the Broward County Emergency Management Hurricane Hotline at 954-831-4000 or dial 311. ▸▸ Power outages are common during a hurricane. FPL offers a comprehensive storm plan that focuses on readiness, restoration and recovery to respond safely and quickly to damaged electrical infrastructure. ASK THE EXPERT

Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

E

vidence shows that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological well-being. Despite this, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue had reduced symptoms once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan.
