It’s Time to Go Back to School
I
t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Hollywood is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

Takin’ It to the Streets – City of Hollywood Announces New Project COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Hollywood unveiled their latest improvement plan for the city in a groundbreaking ceremony held in June at City Hall Circle. The hot temperature, and the possible threat of a morning thunderstorm didn’t keep those away from hearing about the positive changes coming to the popular South Florida destination. The “Hollywood Boulevard Complete Streets Project” had many city officials, city employees, and residents celebrating the grand announcement which included refreshments, a view of renderings and new landscape, as well as a tour of the corridor. The long overdue venture will take place over the next 2 years to transform Hollywood Boulevard, from City Hall Circle to Dixie Highway in Hollywood, by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). In May 2013, the City successfully applied for an MPO grant for a “Complete Streets” project along Hollywood Boulevard from City Hall to Dixie
Highway. The City was awarded a grant for approximately $7.6 million dollars to implement a design incorporating “Complete Streets” guidelines. The Hollywood Boulevard project is one of the MPO’s flagship projects and will serve as a model for other “Complete Streets” endeavors across the county. This portion of Hollywood Boulevard will be transformed into a functional, beautiful, multi-modal corridor. The goal of the corridor redesign is to promote a street designed for all forms of transportation including transit system users, bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. The project will also create inviting outdoor spaces along the sidewalks to help promote retail, restaurant and other businesses in the area and enhance the quality of life of those who live in the adjacent neighborhoods. “This span of Hollywood Boulevard between Dixie Highway and City Hall is about to be transformed, and in the process will realize City founder Joseph Young’s total vision of a welcoming, pedestrianfriendly downtown destination,” says Joann Hussey, Public Information Manager, City of Hollywood. “The City and Broward MPO are committed to safer, healthier streets, as such this exciting transformation will incorporate improvements such as ADA compliant sidewalks and crosswalks, signalization and street lighting, landscaping and bike lanes. The City is proud to have Hollywood Boulevard chosen as the location for an ‘Urban Complete Streets Project’ which will serve as the model for future MPO

hirteen outstanding Broward County Seniors, both men and women, were honored at the “34th Annual Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast”, which took place in May at the Renaissance Fort-Lauderdale Plantation Hotel during “Older American Month”. The anticipated event was presented by The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County (ADRC) and sponsored by the Area wide Council on Aging of Broward County and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Hollywood resident, Karen Caputo, was one of these honorees. Over 325 community advocates, elected and appointed officials joined the Aging and Disability Resource Center in celebrating the achievements of the group whose exceptional local volunteer efforts merited their selection for the unique recognition. Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief joined Master of Ceremonies, Manuel Synalovski, AIA, and Aging and Disability Resource Center Executive Director, Edith Lederberg, in welcoming the new Hall of Famers whose names are inscribed on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the Broward County Government Building. The new electees included: Karen Caputo, Hollywood; Vera Chuck, Miramar; Patricia Crowley, Oakland Park; Antoinette Galleta, Pompano Beach; Barbara Gordon, Pompano Beach; Norman & Sharon Saphier Grad, Margate; Gwen Major, Deerfield Beach; Roberta Nazimovitz, Pembroke Pines; Dorothy & John W. Ruffin, Jr., Coral Springs; Addie Sanders-Owens, Lauderhill; and Barbara Beasley Williamson, Ft. Lauderdale. Karen Caputo has been a resident of Broward County for 42 years. During this time she has proved to be a valuable citizen with an infinite amount of volunteer efforts in the community. She is an educated and devoted volunteer and role model for humanity. Her long time service to the residents of Broward County is why she was elected to the Broward Senior Hall of Fame.
For 21 years, she transported persons with special needs for the Florida Medicaid Program as well as transported disabled and elder persons for the Broward County TOPS Program. She still continues consulting services for transporters of persons with disabilities. For over 20 years, she has been a member of the Broward Emergency Services Council, and is Chair of the Review Committee of applicants for the Ambulance and Non-Emergency Transporter Certification. KAPOW Volunteers Make the Honor Roll
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
s the 2016-2017 school year came to a close, many teachers and students received recognition for all their hard work and efforts, but it was inspiring to see volunteers also being recognized for their dedication and selflessness at the annual KAPOW (Kids and the Power of the Workplace) Recognition Dinner and Awards Banquet at Jungle Island presented by Volunteer Florida. Volunteer Florida is Florida’s lead agency for volunteerism and national service, administering more than $32 million in federal, state, and local funding to deliver high-impact national service and volunteer programs in Florida. Volunteer Florida promotes and encourages volunteerism to meet critical needs across the state. Learning for Success and its KAPOW program is one of only 23 organizations throughout the state to receive a grant this year from Volunteer Florida. “This grant has greatly helped us expand and develop the work of our skills based KAPOW volunteers throughout South Florida,” says John Casbarro, Learning for Success, Inc. President and KAPOW Director. Audrey Kidwell, Volunteer Generation Fund Program Manager for Volunteer Florida, presented the “Excellence in Volunteerism Award” to Damian O’Brien. O’Brien, a 4th grade teacher at Bethune Elementary School, began volunteering with KAPOW in 2003. He has provided over 624 hours of civic engagement and community service, impacting more than 42,000 children in the Broward County community.
(L-R) Brendan Cobb, School Board Member Ann Murray, John Casbarro
“The Broward County Volunteer of the Year Award” was presented to Brendan Cobb from Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Cobb (Also known as Mr. B.) has been a KAPOW volunteer for about 10 years, and the last three at West Hollywood Elementary. His KAPOW partner teacher, Jennifer Wisnoski, nominated him for the prestigious honor. “As a Title I school the KAPOW program and Mr. B have opened my student’s eyes to career life after school by giving my students the opportunity to interact with people from the workplace,” said Wisnoski. “Mr. B has been professional, accommodating, and responsible. Every time Mr. B comes into our classroom he has an engaging lesson where the students have fun while learning.” “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our KAPOW program,” added Casbarro. “We are

awed and humbled by the time, efforts and expertise they provide,as exemplified by Brendan Cobb and Damian O’Brien.” KAPOW, now in its 25th year, serves 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, 100 area businesses and community organizations, volunteers, and 64 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. KAPOW brings volunteers into schools to teach kids about work, and how to be a success in school, work and life. KAPOW also brings students to the workplace, to experience peoples’ jobs first-hand, expose them to jobs in real time, and connect partner companies and organizations to the community.

Back to School Tips BY LAURIE PARKER AND ESTHER POLER SCHECK HILLEL COMMUNITY SCHOOL COUNSELORS
A
s summer starts to wind down (although it’s still pretty hot out there!), it is time to start preparing your children to head back to school. Here are a few helpful tips for families to ease back into the school mindset. Let the countdown begin. No matter how much fun your child has had over the summer, the start of the school year should be something that is eagerly anticipated in your Laurie Parker Esther Poler home (not only by you). Build enthusiasm by posting a calendar in the kitchen and let your child mark down the days until the first day of school. Start the conversation. While it is important to be positive about the coming school year, your child should also feel free to talk to you about any concerns they may have. Maintain an open dialogue by addressing any issues that arise head-on while talking about the wonderful things they will learn, friends they will meet, and opportunities that await them at school. Get back into a routine. Schedules tend to be more lax during the summer. Start gradually adjusting bedtime and wake up times several days before the first day of school. Re-establish morning routines by setting out clothes the night before and allot a certain amount of time for breakfast in the morning. Parents should also start reducing the amount of time kids spend in front of the television or on the computer. While most children do their homework on a computer, time spent on the computer isn’t always productive and can take away from other school preparation. Do YOUR homework. Avoid additional back-to-school stress by making sure that your child has completed any summer assignments. Leaving things for the last minute will only create anxiety in both you and your child. Also, engage your child in a conversation about their summer assignments and how it will relate to what they’ll be studying in the classroom this year.
Involve the kids. Bring your child along with you to any open houses or meet-the-teacher events scheduled at school. Also, acquaint younger children with basic activities, such as pick-up and drop-off routines and schedules. This is particularly important with younger children and for those who will be attending a new school. Take your children with you when you go shopping for school supplies. This will give them an enthusiasm and sense of empowerment that will carry over into the classroom. Sign up, Try out, Get involved. With a new school year beginning, new opportunities arise. Encourage your child to become active in the school community by joining a club, team, music group or any other organization of interest, or register for an after-school enrichment program. These are great ways to meet friends, have fun and even discover new talents and interests along the way. In later years, extracurricular activities of course offer great boosts to college applications. And there’s a whole other set of tips for that! But for now… Here’s to an exciting, stress-free start to another great school year! Laurie Parker and Esther Poler partner as Scheck Hillel Community School school counselors for students in early childhood through elementary grades. They are part of a schoolwide team of counselors through high school. Laurie is a licensed marriage and family therapist and holds a certificate in guidance and counseling and elementary education. s a hospital pediatrician, the summer months are generally less busy than the school year. As the summer wraps up, however, our admissions increase because children are returning to school and are often in need of an annual physical. With busy physician offices, there are a few tips to help your visit run smoother. ▸▸ Don’t Procrastinate. It’s tempting to wait until the last week before school to make appointments. To avoid the busy chaos that hits mid-August, try to plan yearly check-ups around the time of your child’s birthday. This can be difficult if there are multiple school-aged siblings, however this will allow your doctor more time. ▸▸ Be Patient. A check-up is not easy. While it may seem like your pediatrician does a brief exam, a proper well-child visit reviews many facets of your child’s health. We evaluate whether your child is gaining weight and growing well. We check eye sight and hearing. We listen to hearts for murmur or irregular rhythms and lungs for wheezing or other abnormal sounds. We feel the abdomen for masses and we inspect genitalia for the start and progression of puberty. We also look at skin for rashes or abnormal pigmentation. ▸▸ Be Honest. After all that, we need to make sure your children are safe, so we need to discuss things like car seats, gates, the storage of household cleaners and more. Older kids may need private time with their pediatrician so we can address teen issues such as smoking, drugs, bullying, depression, anxiety and sex. And those are just the basics, kids with chronic medical problems such as asthma, allergies, epilepsy, or other conditions such as cerebral palsy need special time to address their issues so we can make sure they are thriving. Good checkups take time, which brings me to my next point about paperwork. ▸▸ Be Prepared. It’s not just “filling out forms.” The forms required by schools are to prove that the child is safe to attend school and participate in activities. Each form takes a few minutes but if filled out incorrectly, the schools will reject them and your child won’t be able to start on time. Forms demand attention which adds to the already ticking clock of the visit. The well-child visit is time for your pediatrician to make sure your kids are growing and developing well and to address any concerns you may have. To make the most of it, don’t procrastinate, be patient and allow us to truly “check” your child head to toe. No pediatrician wants to miss a serious problem because they were feeling rushed. As we head into the new school year, let us give you the greatest gift of all; a meaningful and informative annual physical for your child. Dr. Berkovich is a board certified pediatrician. She received her medical degree from Nova Southeastern University. She completed her pediatric residency at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, formerly Miami Children’s Hospital. She was the recipient of the Dr. Arturo J. Aballi Educational Award as well as the 2016 American College of Osteopathic Pediatrician’s Outstanding Resident of the Year. She was a guest speaker on MD for Moms Radio. She is a pediatric hospitalist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians and the Helfer Society. She resides in Hollywood with her husband and two children.

s a person ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, alteration in the skeletal framework, and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth, and number of facial wrinkles characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. To achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface - fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments, such as sublative eMatrix laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion and Botox® and Dysport®, as well as topical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers that contain Hyaluronic acid. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation. The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The specific procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a minifacelift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue structure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm® (Voluma and Vollure), Restylane® (Refyne and Defyne), and Radiesse® can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants make the skin appear more youthful. Avoiding sun exposure and not smoking also improves skin appearance. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactorial. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition. Lower Back Pain
U
nfortunately, one of the most common areas of pain is in the lower back. The lumbar spine, also known as the low back, interconnects the bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles. The structure works together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. But, because this structure is so complex, it leaves the low back susceptible to injury and pain. Furthermore, the region supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday actions such as bending and twisting. Lower back muscles are also responsible for flexing and rotating hips while walking, as well as being support for the spinal column. The nerves in the low back supply sensation and give power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. Usually mechanical issues and soft-tissue injuries are the cause of low back pain. These types of injuries can include damage to the intervertebral discs, compression of nerve roots, and improper movement of the spinal joints. But the most common cause is typically a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament. A variety of symptoms may occur when lower back pain is evident. They may be mild or severely debilitating. They may develop slowly over time or just come on suddenly. The symptoms are also a result of the underlying cause of the pain. The time course of the pain will also help determine the cause. The body will also react to the injury by mobilizing an inflammatory healing response which in turn presents more pain. A muscle may be strained if it is stretched too far and tears. Therefore, damaging the muscle itself. It may be sprained when over-stretching and tearing affects the ligaments which connect the bones together. However, regardless if the muscle or ligament is damaged, the symptoms and treatment are the same. It’s advised to speak to a physician if the following symptoms are occurring: ▸▸ Achy, dull pain is present in the low back ▸▸ Numbness or tingling (sciatica), perhaps even stinging or burning pain moves from the low back down to the back of thighs, and into the lower legs and feet ▸▸ Tightness in the low back, pelvis, and hips along with muscle spasms ▸▸ Pain worsens after prolonged sitting or standing ▸▸ Difficulty changing positions from standing to sitting and vice-versa Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.

CURTAIN CALL
After 2 years of hard work, the labor of love was finally revealed. The Real Church, on the property where the infamous Hollywood Playhouse stands on Washington Street, was dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony. In attendance were Hollywood City Commissioners, Mayor Josh Levy, Pastor Martin Vargas and his family along with an abundance of church family members who were excited to see their new home.

REAL ESTATE
O
nce you have prepared your home to sell, and found the right real estate agent to be in charge of the sale, it’s a good idea to work closely with your agent when the listing agreement is signed. This is the time to discover and write down what improvements, upgrades, and features have been made in the home. Typically, there will be an informational sheet provided for sellers to share all the main details necessary that will be beneficial when marketing the property. The listing sheet has so many options which are valuable for potential buyers including schools, location, and such. It is important that every option in a listing is itemized. Build an emotional description that can describe and share why the home is so important to you and your family. Express positive thoughts that a potential buyer may appreciate to help them see why the house may be the right fit for them. An example may be: a large backyard which is perfect for children, parties, ball games, and BBQs. Every listing has the option and the space to provide three “Remarks” descriptions and every one should be built accordingly. The first is the most important, as this is where we describe the essence of the house: the lot size, living space, kitchen, bedrooms, baths, den, home office, pool, garage, etc. An agent will try to incorporate every detail that will help create the most attractive description.

A less expensive way to help get the dental care you deserve The second one is “Broker’s Remarks”. Of course, these are very important as we need to be open to work with other colleagues and other agents that may have a buyer for your home. This space enables us to give, in a few words, the most important points so they can use them as selling tools with their clients. Last but not the least are “Internet Remarks”. These short and sweet, most attractive points with very limited amount of space, have a significant value to both buyers and sellers. Most research is done online these days, so it’s crucial to make your listing stand out. Once this process is complete, your real estate agent may help you stage your home and make suggestions on what should be moved around or decluttered. This part is what makes your home inviting to others. The final step is when the agent hires a professional photographer to photograph your home. Professionals have cameras with wide lenses to really showcase your home. A drone operator who can take aerial photos is also a great way to maximize the home’s exposure when marketing your property. Alex Bruno is a top producer at RE/MAX 5 Star Realty for 12 years, and is currently a Top 1% Selling RE/MAX real estate owner/agent in South Florida and Number #1 in the City of Hollywood.
