BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. I
t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. t’s that time of year when the sun sets earlier, the slight change in temperature becomes apparent, and October’s signature holiday is right around the corner. Although, the leaves will not be changing colors and the smell of fall will not be in the air, many Florida residents still enjoy the season and their pumpkin spice lattes. Most locals, big and small, especially get into the seasonal spirit towards the end of the month when Halloween celebrations and activities pop up all over town. Once the pumpkins are purchased, it’s time to start thinking about costumes, parties and trick-or-treating. Hollywood’s 3nd Annual Downtown Halloween Celebration promises to be even bigger this year, as both sides of Hollywood Blvd. between 19th and 20th streets are closed for a super-sized block party on October 28th. The free community event sponsored by The Hollywood CRA, Hollywood Kia, The Greek Joint, Mickey Byrnes, Whiskey Tango, The Octopus Bar & Mauro’s Pizza will offer an evening for kids of all ages. Early in the night from 6-9pm, the little ones can enjoy “Treat Street”. The interactive trick-or-treat area is free and offers plenty of candy stations, face painting, balloon twisters, a costume contest, kid friendly entertainment, and live music by Carlos DJ Sonic. Additionally, a new market area will showcase local vendors. Later that evening from 9pm-2am, the “Hollyweird” Block Party begins for the 21 and over crowd. Whiskey Tango, Mickey Byrne’s, The Greek Joint, and The Octopus Bar will provide live music and entertainment. There is no
cover charge, but the opportunity to purchase food and drinks is available. It’s encouraged to dress to impress as adult costume contests with categories such as: Best Group/Couple, Sexiest, Scariest, Funniest, and Best overall can win cash and prizes valued at over $10,000. For those that want to continue the festivities, The City of Hallandale Beach will host their annual event on October 31st. or the third year, Taste of Equality, hosted by Gulfstream Park, will be held on October 11, 2017 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This year, attendees can once again embrace their inner foodies with a tasting in the park from participating venues and expect the event to take it up a notch with some awesome entertainment, shopping specials, raffles and more. More than 250 local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) supporters and members of the LGBTQ community are expected to gather at Hallandale Beach’s renowned Gulfstream Park to support Equality Florida. The event is hoping to raise funds through ticket sales and raffle prizes, and 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Equality Florida and The Safe and Healthy Schools Project. The lavish open-air entertainment complex is the perfect place for guests to sip and savor a variety of food, wine and cocktail samples from more than a dozen participating sponsors while supporting the cause that dedicates itself to securing full equality for the LGBTQ community. The dining and retail center has generous donations and support from its tenants. Guests will be able to dine and shop around Gulfstream at restaurants and retailers including Adena Grill &

ver a decade ago a special group of volunteers at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation spent their time advocating and raising funds for the hospital to reinforce its’ mission to heal an individual’s body, mind and spirit. These volunteers, appropriately called The Diamond Angels, have raised more than 4.5 million dollars since its inception in 2004. Their main event, The Fairy Tale Ball, supports children, families, programs, services, and facilities at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The Diamond Angels are proud to announce the 14th Annual Fairy Tale Ball, and have a simple request to be their guest at this year’s Beauty and the Beastthemed fundraiser. The grand fundraiser, co-hosted by The Diplomat Beach Resort, will be held on Saturday, November 11th at 7:00pm at the beachfront destination in Hollywood. The evening will include a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing, an auction of dream vacations and unique experiences. George Gray, announcer for The Price is Right, will emcee and attendees will be encouraged to sing along with The Liverpool Legends, a Beatles tribute band. In addition to an incredible evening, guests will hear the emotional story from a patient who attributes their life to the care received at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
“We’re committed to making things better for those in our community coping with pediatric health issues,” said Fairy Tale Ball co-chairs Liz Jacobs and Robin Steinman, leaders of the volunteer Diamond Angels that annually host the event. “The gala definitely has something for everyone and the impact of all our efforts is significant and long-lasting.” Funds raised at the 2017 event will help double the size of the current hospital, which will include a new Cardiac Intensive Care unit and the expansion of medical and surgical services to meet increased demand. The 2nd Annual Dylan D’Andrea Memorial Paddleball Tournament Was a Smash Hit

any came out to the Hollywood Beach Garfield Paddleboard Courts on a hot August day this past summer to benefit “I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation” in honor of Dylan D’Andrea. The second annual event raised almost $2,500 for the memorial fund set up by Dylan’s family. The “I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation” supports the development of, and raises public awareness about, cutting-edge, targeted therapies for childhood cancer, so that the treatment of childhood cancer will be gentler and more tolerable. More than 70 players remembered and honored Dylan D’Andrea with a special day of a “Hands vs. Paddles Out of the Hat Open” tournament, hosted by Jaime W. Pozo and Kelly Quinn. They played for over 8 hours in 90+ degree weather to raise funds for the cause. Additionally, many set up tables, cooked food, and donated water, Gatorade, and ice to keep players fueled and hydrated. “Living in South Florida, I’ve been playing paddleball on Hollywood Beach for over 30 years, and realized it would be a great opportunity for my paddleball family to participate in a fun event, while supporting a beautiful cause and celebrating my son’s life,” said Kelly Quinn, Dylan’s mother. “They truly are a second family at Hollywood/ Garfield Street Beach!”

Since 2007 “I Care I Cure” (ICIC) has funded over $1.6 million in research both locally and throughout the country. Quinn first learned about the organization from her co-worker Beth-Ann Krimsky, ICIC Board President. After speaking with her and learning of all the efforts and their mission, she knew she had to get involved. Sadly, shortly after, Quinn lost her 17-year-old son in a tragic car accident. She wanted to bring something positive out of the tragedy, so their family has made their focus on “I Care I Cure” in Dylan’s memory. Each year they enter a team in the annual 5K Run, and now for the second year their very own Dylan D’Andrea Memorial Tournament. “The family of Dylan D’Andrea experienced a tragic loss. No parent should have to bury a child,” said Babette Ferre-Kosar, Executive Director I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation. “Kelly is an extremely strong and generous woman, and her ability to turn this tragedy into a supportive and successful event will hopefully prevent other parents from the heartbreak of losing a child in the future through better cures and treatments for childhood cancer.” “Our Dylan D’Andrea 2nd Annual Memorial to benefit I Care I Cure was bigger and better than the last, and that’s solely due to the teamwork and friendship of everyone involved,” stated Quinn.

Lucci wanted to represent many of the major U.S. manufacturers as well as many foreign manufacturers. This diverse mix makes up the uniqueness of shopping at Ralph’s. Anyone craving a taste of home can most likely find what they are looking for at this international market. Pat Lucci, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Ralph’s International Market, took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his “super” market. Tell us about the Coffee Zone. We have imported a brand-new coffee roaster and espresso machine from Italy to include at our deli/coffee bar. Customers will be able to select raw, green beans from one of the 8 countries of origin we represent. They will then be able to select the level of roasting (dark, medium, light), and we roast them right on premises while they shop. We are happy to serve the freshest cup of coffee, cappuccino or box of coffee beans/grounds you could ever possibly get. We heard there is a unique history about how the actual store came about. Tell us about it. Well, when we were just a distribution center many local farmers used to sell produce on the street corner. One day they were told they could no longer sell their goods on the public property,

I received my Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University and my Masters from Northern Arizona University. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where I was a member of four Big Ten Championship swim teams. In addition, I was an individual Big Ten Champion and a Big Ten Scholar Athlete.

esides preparing for depositions, the Kramer, Green, Zuckerman, Greene, and Buchsbaum, P.A. law firm was very busy preparing for school this past summer. Although, the Hollywood-based law firm is always dedicated to providing clients with unique, cost-effective legal solutions, they felt the need to help those in need in the community as well. Pens, pencils and paper were hot commodities in July and August, when the boutique law firm participated in the Broward Education Foundation’s Tools for Schools drive. Attorneys and staff collected essential school supplies for students in need throughout Broward County, amassing large quantities of notebooks, glue sticks, crayons, erasers, paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, rulers and more. All the donated supplies will be made available to teachers from Broward’s Title I schools at the Tools for Schools Broward store in Pompano Beach. Qualified teachers can shop, free of charge, for school supplies for their economically challenged students. “Tools for Schools addresses critical gaps in our local education system by providing in-need students with the essential supplies they need to be successful,” said Robert M. cArthur High School is excited about their new club, Latinos in Action (LIA), which the Broward County School Board encouraged. The new initiative already has 34 students involved under the direction of club advisor, Jessica Santos. Currently, LIA serves over 310 students in 110 schools throughout Utah, Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Involved students are civically engaged young men and women who aspire to better their lives through education, leadership, professionalism, and service. These middle and high school students are paired with elementary school students as mentors and tutors, and reach more than 6,000 annually. The leadership class/club is taught at the high school and junior high/middle school level by a highly-qualified and committed educator. LIA states, “The robust LIA curriculum trains students as paraprofessionals and leaders who visit their local elementary schools to not only increase literacy and math rates of those who are struggling, but to act as role models. This allows younger students to build leadership and self-efficacy that will propel them to join LIA when they reach Junior High and High School and continue the cycle of support and leadership demonstrated by older LIA students.”

McArthur High School club members will mentor and tutor students at Boulevard Heights and West Hollywood Elementary Schools. They plan on having a beach clean-up and a pageant at the end of the school year. Their mission is to run the club on their own and build each other as leaders with their advisor providing them the structure and opportunity to make their own decisions under her guidance. All students are required to keep a 2.0 GPA or higher, with an overall goal to graduate college and become professionals. Most LIA students currently maintain a 3.2 GPA and many well above that average. Latinos in Action meet every other day during third and fourth periods as part of the study hall. “Latinos In Action is a group of students empowering each other and the community to be the difference they want to see. From tutoring/mentoring younger children at local elementary schools to creating community service projects that work towards the enhancement of our environment is what we do,” says club advisor Jessica Santos. “My goal as the Latinos In Action Advisor is to help build up leaders and professionals that strive to make a huge impact on our society and that become world changers.” The service component of the program is one of LIA’s strongest values. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. A
baby’s first tooth can be a significant milestone. Teething typically begins anytime around 6 months to one year. Babies will drool, have increased saliva, and put their hands in their mouth during teething. Babies can sometimes be uncomfortable during this process, and the gums may be mildly swollen. A baby’s body temperature may slightly rise when teething; however, according to a 2016 study in Pediatrics, a true fever (temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) is not associated with teething and is actually a sign of an illness or infection. For teething discomfort, parents can try using a cold washcloth or a solid teething toy that was placed in the freezer. For severe discomfort, ask your pediatrician about the appropriate dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol). We recommend avoiding over the counter teething tablets since some have been shown to contain inconsistent and, in some cases, elevated amounts of components, which can be toxic if ingested. We also advise against amber teething necklaces, which are a choking and strangulation hazard. Once your child has teeth, the brushing fun can begin! Start with using a small smear (size of a grain of rice) of fluorinated toothpaste on a baby tooth brush twice a day. After your child turns 3, you can start using a pea-sized amount when brushing. Remember to supervise and assist your child’s brushing techniques until they are able to do it independently (around age 6 or 7). Although special children’s toothpaste can help incentivize your child to brush, buying it is not necessary. As long as it has fluoride, they can use the same brand the rest of the family uses. It’s never too early to take steps to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Tooth decay develops when teeth and gums are exposed to any liquid or food other than water for prolonged periods or frequently throughout the day. This happens commonly when children are offered a bottle prior to or at bedtime. Milk, formula, juice, and soft drinks leave behind sugars that remain in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth changes sugars to acid. This acid then dissolves the outer part of the teeth, causing them to decay. This process can also occur when kids frequently drink anything other than water from a cup or bottle during the day or night. Milk should be served only with meals and not offered throughout the day, at nap time, or at bedtime. Try to minimize the amount of sugary snacks that your child can choose. Instead of cookies and candy, offer fresh fruit. Be careful with small treats like raisins, caramels, and jelly beans, which can get stuck in teeth. Direct Line Scheduling an appointment with a pediatric dentist should happen sometime around your child’s first birthday. The dentist will check your child for cavities, and your child will get used to the routine of a dentist’s appointment. After that, your child should be seen every 6 months for routine check-ups. Cavities are the most common chronic medical problems -, even more common than allergies and asthma! Taking care of teeth early on helps build long-lasting healthy habits.

Which Breast Surgery is Right for You? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A
ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision (same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold). All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Local Gym Owner Proves to be a Community Champion Once Again
F
or the second year, Flaco’s Community Gym teamed up with Oakridge Elementary School for the annual back to school event, “Thai’s Bookbag Giveaway”. Jose “Flaco” Perez and Eddie Aguilar, Oakridge Elementary Principal, certainly went the distance to make this year’s backpack drive bigger than last years. The original goal in 2016 was 50 backpacks (even if Perez had to purchase them himself), which quickly turned into 125. This year, the quantity nearly doubled with 200 backpacks overflowing with school supplies to be given to children in need. Additionally, children received free haircuts, nutritional advice, well check-
ups, and so much more. The entire event doubled in general as more professionals came out to provide their services to the expanded crowd. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jose “Flaco” Perez isn’t the stereotypical gym owner with big muscles, a big attitude and a big accent. This native New Yorker is known in Hollywood for his big heart. His goal is to bring the community together by connecting others to resources he himself has benefited from that they may not have access to such as doctors, lawyers, nutritionists, musicians, celebrities, etc. “Combining the efforts of the city’s municipalities and small local businesses in the community supporting one another, we were able to offer much needed information, guidance, and a great positive environment for the youth and their families,” said Perez. “I want to help bring back the old school ideals and beliefs that we help one another in the community, a world where we know our neighbors’ names, problems, and are there to support and help one another.” The blow-by-blow of some in attendance were as follows: Hollywood Police Department, Hollywood Fire Department, Berman & McGrath, Mercedes Electric, Big Tyme Barber Shop, Exclusive Barbers, Legacy Barbershop, Sub City, Powell Health Solutions, Vision Security, Eatwell Exchange, Roho Kitchen, Superbowl XLVII champion Bryant McKinnie, Stanley Zamor, DJ Sykes, Brettnie B, YungKurb, and numerous others. “The students and staff of Oakridge Elementary are grateful to Flaco’s Community Gym for providing a positive, energetic start to our school year,” stated Proud Principal, Mr. Aguilar. “We thank Flaco and his volunteers for the hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to help our children succeed.” “I want to leave a legacy bigger than a bank account,” added Perez. “To see and hear the reactions of the kids and parents was great, and to know I had a chance to really make a difference in just one kids life is a blessing.”

UP THE RIVER
The 26th Annual Jail and Bail fundraiser ended with a bang aboard the Upthe-River Cruise. Guests sailed around the Fort Lauderdale waterways on the triple-decker Biscayne Lady yacht raising more than $30,000 for the American Cancer Society (ACS). The event was the crowning conclusion to another terrific year for Jail and Bail— an annual event which is one of the largest fundraisers for the ACS in Broward County. The cumulative total of both events reached $205,000 for the 2017 season.
PACKING A PUNCH
For the second year, Flaco’s Community Gym teamed up with Oakridge Elementary School for the annual back to school event, “Thai’s Bookbag Giveaway”. Jose “Flaco” Perez and Eddie Aguilar, Oakridge Elementary Principal, certainly went the distance to make this year’s backpack drive bigger than last years. See page 31 for more details.
SCHOOL BASH
The City of Hallandale Beach gave out 500 backpacks and various school supplies at their annual back to school event made possible by numerous sponsoring vendors. Activities included free haircuts from Tony’s Barbershop, a health fair, live band, a bike rodeo, street art, bike giveaways, helmet fittings, a pop-up library, and more!

Fibromyalgia BY FELIX M. RAMIREZ, D.O.
O
ne of the most difficult syndromes to diagnose is fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the condition cannot be confirmed through a simple laboratory test, or even on an x-ray. A physician must determine the diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms. Because symptoms can occur alone or along with other conditions, it takes time to truly diagnose. Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that affects the muscles and soft tissues. Chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, memory and mood issues, painful tender and/or trigger points are often the most common symptoms. Symptoms may occur after a physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress. However, sometimes symptoms may just develop over time with no specific cause. The American College of Rheumatology says that one of the criteria used as a guideline for diagnosing fibromyalgia is widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months. “Widespread” is defined as pain on both sides of the body, as well as above and below the waist. Researchers also believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. For some reason, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be relieved through medications, lifestyles changes, such as exercise and stress management. Other possible causes can be an underlying problem such as rheumatic diseases, mental health problems, and/or neurological disorders. Your physician may still recommend blood tests to get a complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thyroid function, and vitamin D levels. Additionally, your physician may also perform a careful physical exam of your muscles and joints, as well as a neurological exam to look for other causes of your symptoms. If there is a chance that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend a sleep study. After gathering all the appropriate and crucial information, your physician will be able to assess what may be causing your symptoms and determine and develop an effective treatment plan. Felix M.
