Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community. It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year! Sincerely,

or over a decade now, St. Nick will make his annual stop in Hollywood to bring some holiday cheer. Many South Floridians who have attended in years past look forward to “Christmas Near the Beach” (CNTB) which takes place the second Saturday in December at ArtsPark in Young Circle. The festival wants to bring all South Florida communities together to celebrate the season in this jam-packed extravaganza which continues to grow each year. The generous sponsors and vendors have allowed “Christmas Near the Beach” to be free to all who attend. The 11-year celebration promises to be one of the best yet. The jolly fat man in the red suit plans on making his stylish entrance as always on a classic car led by the Florida Sunshine Marching Band. He will then head over to his beach house to take free photos with all his visitors on his sleigh. Those that visit will be offered a free raffle ticket and one family will walk away with Santa’s personal Christmas tree. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, arrive early and stay late. The South Florida style lineup includes bands, choirs, mime, drama, ballet, flash mob dancers, a visit from the Grinch, and so much more. A pre-event of Christmas caroling in Downtown Hollywood will begin at 2:00pm and then the festival will resume from 4-9pm. DJ Mr. E will keep the crowd energized between featured acts and performances. “Many But One Performing Arts” will present an original ballet, with their company of professional and advanced students, bringing Christmas alive through the arts. New this year, CNTB welcomes “EPIC the Band” and the JJRC band featuring Jeff and Christine Maldonado.

Downtown Hollywood Remains the Perfect Canvas for Two More Murals COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

aunched by the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in August of 2012, the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is the largest walkable mural project in Broward County, and a true example of the CRA’s mission to beautify and add culture to the downtown area “one wall at a time”. The collection of curated outdoor murals by both local, national and internationally recognized artists is a key element in the CRA’s arts-focused initiative to enhance the diversity and vibrancy of Downtown Hollywood, Florida. Two more building façades in Downtown Hollywood have been transformed into eye-catching works of art with the creation of stunning murals by three South Florida artists. The first mural was completed and created by South Beach-based Yuhmi Collective. The husbandand-wife art duo Victor and Michelle Vasquez, were

captivated by Hollywood founder Joseph Young’s “Dream City” vision and the founding story of how “Hollywood by the Sea” was created and transformed through the years. The colorful pastel-hued mural depicts a whimsical undersea scene featuring a mermaid and other sea creatures and reflects the couple’s East Asian influence. The latest mural is the vision of Miami muralist and fine-art painter Fabio Onrack. His mural will feature realistic black-and-white portraits of renowned artists Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Onrack’s work reflects his artistic passion for painting people and places and his exploratory style of painting three-dimensional elements with expressive movement and emotion. “I am really excited to have two new gorgeous DHMP murals added to our collection in Downtown Hollywood,” said Jill C. Weisberg, CRA art specialist/ project manager. “One of the great things about both murals is that they are in super-prominent locations.” The Yuhmi Collective mural is located on the southeast corner of 21st Avenue and Tyler Street, and Onrack’s mural is on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard at 21st Avenue.

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY HOLLYWOOD

“Thousands of cars will see a beautiful mermaid and her sea turtle friends as they drive by or are waiting at the traffic light,” Weisberg added. “The second mural site faces west, so viewers entering the gateway to Downtown Hollywood will be welcomed by three famous artist portraits.” There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Free on-street parking is available in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Garage parking is available for $1 per hour at the Municipal Garages located at 251 S. 20th Avenue (between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street) and 251 N. 19th Avenue (between Tyler Street and Polk Street). A Gift from the Heart - Hollywood Couple Adopts Israeli Battalion BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

Hollywood couple recently visited the two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) battalions which they adopted at their bases in Israel in September. The generosity of longtime FIDF supporters FIDF Palm Beach/Broward Region Board Member Gary Balter, who was formerly FIDF’s national board treasurer, and his wife Wendy is beyond appreciated, as they not only adopted one, but two battalions through the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Adopt-a-Battalion program.

The IDF program is the most personal way to show the IDF soldiers appreciation, support, and love for their bravery and commitment as they protect Israel’s borders every day. The Balter family’s commitment of $90,000 will be used to fund various events and activities to celebrate the soldiers’ achievements and hard work. FIDF organized the visit to the IDF bases in the Golan Heights and near Beit El. The Balters met and heard firsthand from the soldiers of the IDF 162nd Armor Division’s “Afik” Signals Intelligence Battalion and the 877th Division’s “Ofek” Signals Intelligence Battalion. “While meeting the soldiers from my battalion, I felt as though my contribution was greatly needed as these soldiers don’t have any ‘extras.’ They were thankful that we made the effort to meet them and were very appreciative of our support. Each soldier works very hard – at times 12 hours a day – while enduring difficult living conditions,” said Mrs. Balter. “It is important to my family to show them how much we care about them by visiting them and experiencing a slice of their life – and they love hearing that Jews from the around the world love and support them. We need to reinforce this mes-

sage to keep them strong.” FIDF’s Adopt-A-Battalion Program is the only of its kind, allowing supporters to go beyond their donation to get more involved by providing financial assistance to soldiers in-need, caring for Lone Soldiers with no immediate family in Israel, and funding rest and recuperation weeks for combat units. Supporters of the program are able to visit the soldiers in their adopted units on IDF bases, and have periodic communication with the units’ commanders. T

he Art and Culture Center/Hollywood recently received funding by a grant from PNC Arts Alive! The multi-year initiative of the PNC Foundation dedicated to supporting visual and performing arts groups has formed a partnership with the Center, and will offer interactive arts activities, expanding upon the current Free Admission Day program offered for contemporary visual arts exhibitions. The new Free Arts! Family Days will be presented on the third Sunday of each month as an opportunity to increase arts access and engagement in new and innovative ways. “We’re excited that PNC’s generosity has allowed us to offer this wonderful program to families,” said Joy Satterlee, executive director, Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood. “It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to connect to and benefit from the arts by participating together in hands-on activities that encourage education, communication, cooperation, and fun!” Free Arts! Family Days focuses on the four key pillars of arts education: visual arts, dramatic arts, dance/movement, and percussion/music. Subject areas such as science, literacy, history and cultural studies will be incorporated into each Free Arts! program date. “We depend on our cultural sector to attract tourism, spur our economy, and educate, which is why PNC has a long history of partnering with arts organizations that strengthen the lives of Main Street communities like this one in Hollywood,” said Cressman Bronson, PNC regional president for Florida East while presenting the grant. “Through PNC Arts Alive, we are increasing arts access and engaging people in new and innovative ways. Now, the Art and Culture Center will be able to offer families a variety of unique and free programs that showcase South Florida at its best.”

Night at the Museum – Colbert Museum Magnet School’s Signature Event SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

C

olbert Museum Magnet recently presented its first STEM “Museum Night” of the 2017-2018 school year. Parents, caregivers, relatives and friends were all invited to see what accomplishments these cougars have achieved in such a short period of time thus far. Colbert Museum Magnet is one of six elementary schools in Broward County awarded a Magnet Schools of America Grant in October 2013. Within the past four years Colbert has developed a whole school museum magnet program that delivers rigorous curriculum to prepare learners for 21st century challenges and opportunities. Students use engineering practices to create, build, and design solutions as they discover academics in a new enriching manner. Throughout the year students in grades K-5 work on problem based learning units and engineering design challenges. “Engineering engages students thinking! The students learn how to collaborate, and think critically and creatively!” exclaims Colbert Elementary Principal Marisa J. Fishlock. “Through hands-on project based learning, students apply the science and math skills they have learned to solve real world problems. In addition, exposing students to engineering helps their awareness of career opportunities in science, engineering and technical careers.” This year, third grade students learned all about the field of package engineering. Students were presented with a real-world scenario that involved a fictitious

boy from Jordan who wanted to give his older sister a plant from his garden as a wedding gift. The boy needed the students help to determine a way that he could transport the plant. Students worked collaboratively to use their problemsolving skills and creativity to design a package that would keep a plant alive and healthy for several days. The engineered plant packages on display at Colbert’s Engineering Showcase ranged in functionality, mobility, and materials usage. “One of our initiatives this year is taking STEM learning to the next level by integrating the arts. STEM has provided our students with a multitude of rich opportunities to fuse both interdisciplinary and an applied learning,” says Chentel Neat, STEM Magnet Coordinator. “Our art teacher, Ms. Perry, has played an integral role in drawing out the imaginative talent of our students as they infuse their learning of a variety of artistic mediums with science, engineering, and culture. It is our hope that we can continue to build a bridge between science, technology, engineering, math and ART! We’re moving full “STEAM” ahead this year and we invite you to be part of our journey!” Colbert Museum Magnet’s next Museum Night will be held on January 11th, 2018 from 5:30pm-7:00pm.

Fins Up for South Broward High School’s Shark Club BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

outh Broward High School (SBHS) is the second oldest high school established in Broward County, and Hollywood’s only marine science magnet school. Almost 2 decades ago, Professor Neil Hammerschlag, now Dr. Hammerschlag, a marine ecologist and Research Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and Abess Center for Ecosystem Science & Policy, and Director of the Shark Research & Conservation Program at the University of Miami, was in search of students to help him make Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect shark data for his master’s dissertation.

24

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY HOLLYWOOD

Students in the dual enrollment GIS program with Broward College partnered with the shark enthusiast and accompanied him and his crew of researchers on a trip to South Africa to help collect data and perform field experiments. The generosity of a grant, secured by Ted Davis, SBHS Magnet Coordinator at that time, made the trip of a lifetime possible for 3 teachers and 8 students. Debbi Hixon, the current South Broward Maritime/Marine Science & Technology Magnet Program Coordinator, was one of the fortunate teachers to go on the 3-week expedition. Upon return, students continued learning and working alongside Dr. Hammerschlag and were able to join him and other U of M staff on his travels to Key Biscayne and the Florida Keys to learn about the local species. It was then that the SBHS Shark Club was born. Fast forward 12 years, and the Bulldogs are still out catching sharks and sharing with the public their conservation efforts. “Students learn about the importance of the sharks in the ocean ecosystem and what people are doing to cause the decline of the sharks,” explained Hixon. “Taking part in these trips allows students be part of the conservation effort to save this vital species in our oceans.” The club currently has about 50 members, and they take at least one trip a month then discuss their findings at monthly meetings. They recently went on a few shark research trips with the University of Miami and collected blood samples, muscle biopsies, and small fin clips. They also tagged them to track their movement. “Our shark club began going out to the community to share their personal experiences and help educate the public to understand that sharks are not the maneating creatures they are made out to be,” added Hixon.

of the community who have demonstrated their commitment to being leaders on and off the field. Each week, the Dolphins will identify a high school coach of the week, high school player of the week, youth player of the week and team mom of the week. In week 5 it was announced that Shaun Shivers from Chaminade-Madonna was “High School Player of the Week” (HSPOW). Shivers carried the ball eight times for 238 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-0 win over Piper High School. Shivers not only won this recognition this year, but also won the HSPOW award in week 11 last season when he was a junior. He currently has 51 carries, 652 yards, 7 touchdowns in 5 games this season. “It feels great be acknowledged for the second time in two years,” said Shivers. “I have put in a lot of hard work and the hard work is paying off”.

Shivers is already committed to attend Auburn University next fall. “It’s a very special place, that feels like home,” added Chaminade’s top athlete. “Shaun is a hardworking, dynamic, and explosive football player. He works his butt off and he has earned everything he has received,” said Chaminade-Madonna Head Coach Dameon Jones. “He is humble and honored to win the Player of the Week award for the second time in two years.” Each award recipient is presented with a plaque on the field during a Dolphins home game at Hard Rock Stadium, a pair of tickets to a Miami Dolphins home game, access to the Dolphins/RISE pregame tailgate, and a Dolphins/RISE T-shirt. They will also receive acknowledgement of their accomplishment in the game program and through the Dolphins’ and RISE’s social media platforms.

he Miami Dolphins strive to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment in an effort to create leaders of tomorrow. The nonprofit organization, Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), dedicates itself to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress while developing meaningful educational programming. Together the two organizations formed an alliance to achieve their similar goals. The perfect partnership shows their dedication to promote positive youth programs in educational systems. An example of their joint venture is a sixteen-week awards program which lasts the duration of the Dolphins season. The program recognizes members Photo Credit: Miami Dolphins

Catching Some Z’s! BY JENNIFER BERKOVICH, D.O, FAAP JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

S

leep is one of the most commonly asked about topics for pediatricians. Whether your child is a newborn who wakes every hour or a teenager who never seem to get enough sleep, parents often worry. How much is too much? What happens if my child doesn’t get enough? Babies do not develop regular sleep cycles until about 6 months of age. While newborns sleep about 16 to 17 hours per day, they may sleep 1 or 2 hours at a time. As babies get older, they need less sleep. The question of “sleep training” comes up often, and there is no one right answer. Some families need the structure of a sleep schedule while others may be ok with a more relaxed approach. Studies have not shown any one method to be superior; so, parents must decide what works best for them. The most important factor in a baby’s sleep is the environment. You should always put your baby to sleep on his or her back—not on the stomach. Use a firm crib mattress and keep pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals out of the crib. These steps, as well as avoiding exposure to smoke, can help prevent SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Home monitors have recently made their way on the market. Home apnea monitors track the breathing and heart rate of sleeping babies. An alarm goes off if breathing stops briefly (apnea) or if the heart rate is unusually slow. This might sound like a good idea; however, most newborns do not need a monitor. Home apnea monitors give little or no protection from SIDS. Research has not shown a clear link between apnea and SIDS. Even full-term newborns in the first few weeks of life may have brief periods of apnea, but this is not linked to SIDS. Studies have found that parents of monitored infants said they felt more depressed, compared to parents of infants who weren’t monitored. Toddler’s bedtime can also be a source of stress. Children this age often resist going to sleep, especially if they have older siblings who are still awake. The key to helping them is consistency and routine. Start about 45 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime. Use this time to read a story, listen to quiet music, or bathe. Be consistent and make bedtime the same time every night. This helps your child know what to expect and helps establish healthy sleep patterns. If there is a special toy or object that your child enjoys sleeping with, use that as a tool to signify bedtime. These often help children fall asleep—especially if they wake up during the night. Make sure the object is safe. Avoid ribbons, buttons, or other parts that may be choking hazards. Stuffing or pellets inside stuffed toys can also be dangerous. Helping your child develop good sleep habits can be a challenge, and it is normal to get upset when a child keeps you awake at night. Try to be understanding. A negative response by a parent can sometimes make a sleep problem worse. Moderation: The Best Approach to Cosmetic Surgery by Charles A. Messa, III, MD, FACS

ASK THE EXPERT

T

oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community - the “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants and oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

CHAMBER NEWS

Time for Holiday Tee – Annual Golf Classic

30

T

he Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 34th Annual Golf Classic on December 18th at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie. This year’s tournament had to be moved because of Hurricane Irma which gave the Chamber the wonderful opportunity to work with Trustee Member, Nova Southeastern University, and owner of Grande Oaks Golf Club. Many may remember that Grande Oaks Golf Club was made famous in the 1980 classic film Caddyshack. It is an oasis for tournament goers to enjoy a challenging, yet fun game of golf while relaxing and networking in the comfort of a private club. Golfers will have the chance to challenge their game on the recently renovated, pristine 18-hole, par 71 golf course designed by Raymond Floyd. “Networking on the links is a proven method to grow business while having fun. The Classic is known for creating business opportunities while enjoying the scenic and relaxing atmosphere a round of golf guarantees to provide,” said Anne Hotte, Greater Hollywood Chamber Executive Director & CEO. “It’s a fun way for people to get involved with their chamber and network with over a hundred of corporate members and business leaders.”

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY HOLLYWOOD

Proceeds from the golf tournament will support programs and educational services the chamber offers to its members, advancing its mission to “foster a business climate that promotes success, integrity, and excellence for our members and the greater Hollywood community.” The tournament also features fun contests including “Hole in One” for a Hollywood Kia car. Last year, Dan Serafini from GG’s Waterfront Bar & Grill, impressed all participants by hitting a shot that won him the Hole in One prize, a Hollywood 2017 SUV KIA Sportage. “We always support the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s golf tournament because it’s always such an exceptional event,” Serafini said. “Last year was even more exceptional for me because I made a hole-in-one.” Shotgun is at 12:00pm noon and the Awards reception, featuring a fabulous silent auction starts at 4 pm. Golf classic sponsorship packages are now available. For more information or to register for the event, please call the chamber at 954-923-4000 or visit www.hollywoodchamber.org.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a wonderful new year!

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

G

reetings to you, the readers of Our City Hollywood. As the Mayor of Hollywood, I am delighted to have been invited to contribute a column to this great community news magazine. For this issue, I’d like to begin by sharing a few highlights and facts that you may find interesting about Hollywood. Hollywood is Broward County’s third-largest municipality by population. The city was founded in 1925 by a visionary developer named Joseph Young. Today, Hollywood is home to over 150,000 residents and encompasses an area measuring 30 square miles in size. Hollywood enjoys having more than 60 parks, five golf courses, and seven miles of pristine beaches with a one-of-a-kind Hollywood Beach Broadwalk where you will find breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean as well as stunning sunsets. Named one of America’s Best Beach Boardwalks by Travel + Leisure magazine, this brick-paved thoroughfare hosts pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, and rollerbladers with thousands of visitors playing at the seashore year-round. The Broadwalk features dozens of eateries, inns and the Hollywood Beach Theatre, which is active with live music five nights a week. Children can enjoy the splash pad at Charnow Park, and many other attractions like the Marine Environment Education Center that is home to our resident sea turtle, “Captain.” Additionally, Hollywood Beach is also home to our County’s largest convention hotel, the Diplomat Beach Resort, and to Hollywood’s newest beach destination - Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. Hollywood is home to 32 public and charter elementary, middle, and high schools which feature a wide range of award-winning magnet programs including S.T.E.M.; the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate (AICE); a Military Academy; Montessori and many others. Hollywood also has 13 private schools and a number of career schools as well as nationally renowned higher learning institutions such as Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, Union Institute & University, and Sheridan Technical College. From a business standpoint, Hollywood has steadily grown into a dynamic business hub with more than 10,000 companies in the City. Approximately 80 percent of Port Everglades, the world’s second-busiest cruise port, is located within the city limits of Hollywood. Hollywood also provides easy access to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport. Hollywood is also home to the Memorial Healthcare System, the nation’s fifth-largest healthcare network, its flagship hospital Memorial Regional, and the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital — the largest free-standing children’s healthcare facility in Broward County. Historic Downtown Hollywood is a lively commercial, entertainment and cultural arts district. Highlighted by the ArtsPark at Young Circle, our Downtown Hollywood Mural Project and dozens of bars and restaurants, Downtown Hollywood hosts hundreds of concerts, music festivals, dance exhibitions, shows, art exhibits, and much more. You can enjoy a wide variety of music and entertainment from live jazz, blues, rock, Latin, and R&B, all just a few steps apart. Hollywood provides a hometown atmosphere with a world class beach in the heart of South Florida, and we hope that as local residents and readers, you will make it a point to enjoy the parks, attractions and amenities of our great city.

A

n uncommon form of chronic pain is known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) which typically develops after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack. However, the pain associated does not correlate with the severity of the initial injury. This type of pain usually affects an arm or a leg. In cases of injury-related CRPS, the syndrome maybe caused by the immune system triggering a response which leads to swelling, redness, and warmth. Some believe that CRPS represents a disruption of the healing process. Although the cause of the pain is not understood and there is no cure, early treatment is recommended and found to be most effective. Many patients who undergo treatment see improvement and even go into remission. Complex regional pain syndrome is also called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. The chronic pain condition occurs because high levels of nerve impulses are sent to an affected site. Some experts believe that CRPS is a result of a dysfunction of the central or peripheral nervous systems. It’s been most common in people ages 20-35, and affects women more often than men. Complex regional pain syndrome signs and symptoms may change over time and vary upon individual. The most common occurrence is pain, swelling, redness, and hypersensitivity in temperature changes such as too cold to touch. An affected limb could become cold and pale over time, and the skin, hair, and nail may change as well along with muscle spasms and tightening. Unfortunately, if these changes occur, the condition is often permanent. Other symptoms may be the following: ▸▸ Continuous burning or throbbing pain, usually in your arm, leg, hand or foot ▸▸ Changes in skin color, which can range from white and mottled to red or blue ▸▸ Changes in skin texture, which may become tender, thin or shiny in the affected area ▸▸ Joint stiffness and damage ▸▸ Weakness and loss (atrophy) ▸▸ Decreased ability to move the affected body part Occasionally, complex regional pain syndrome may spread from its source to elsewhere in the body, such as the opposite limb. Emotional stress has been known to also worsen the pain. If a person experiences severe and constant pain that affects a limb and makes touching or moving that limb seem intolerable, see a physician immediately to determine the cause and to start treating complex regional pain syndrome early. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.
