Spring is finally here!
T
his Florida ‘winter’ season certainly featured a variety of weather conditions. We had a number of cooler days and even colder nights followed by warm and wet weather. As we enter April, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. Time to think about what to do during the approaching summer months. Many of us are busy planning where to go and what to do for summer vacation. Like my family, many have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to reconnect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains, and travel abroad. Summer time is also time for camp activities and summer school. We are blessed with a variety of different camps from which to choose, including language camps, sports camps, music camps, arts & craft camps, and much more. There are a multitude of different kids’ activities and camps advertised in this issue. In addition, keep an eye out for our annual Summer Camp Guide, which will be featured in our May issue. There is something for everybody. Whatever you decide to do this spring and summer, just don’t forget to take along a copy of the ‘Our City Magazine’ to send us your picture.

Model Canine Citizens Make Fur-ever Friends Community News
By Beverly Perkins
H
ighland Lakes is fortunate to have a couple of great model citizens residing in the community. However, these citizens are not typical. These two each have four legs and happen to be the most compassionate canines. Shelby and Cash, both Golden Retrievers, are therapy dogs. Shelby, a 5 year old female and Cash, a 2 year old male started volunteering at the age of one with their owner Debbie Taylor-Warner. Many breeds or mixed breeds can be Therapy Dogs, but a few requirements are necessary. Aside from the obvious of being in good health, well-groomed and current on all vaccines, the dog must have a gentle personality, be good with people and know essential commands. In order to actually be certified, the dog and their owner need to be screened together as a team. This portion tests the dog’s basic manners and the owners handling ability. After passing this first step, Debbie Taylor-Warner with Shelby the next is interacting and being observed with others in a rehabilitation facility for 6 hours (3 visits each for 2 hours). This will determine if the animal is calm with strangers touching them and if their behavior is acceptable. If all goes well, the final step in the process are three supervised visits with actual patients in a facility. If successful, membership into the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) organization is earned and the registration is accepted. The team
receives a membership card, a certificate and a tag for the dog’s collar. Activities may include visits to hospitals, special needs centers, schools and nursing homes. Shelby and Cash alternate Friday visits between Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. They sometimes also join in at the “Read to Me” programs at local public libraries. The 2 hour weekly visits are not necessarily limited to hospital rooms, as these four-legged beauties often times stop in waiting rooms and hallways befriending doctors, nurses and anyone else they can comfort and make smile. “This job is a win-win. I get to combine my love for being with my dogs and helping people feel better,” says Taylor-Warner. “As a professional singer, I’ve received much applause. But, I can honestly say that nothing rivals the feeling of having a parent thank you for making their child smile for the first time in weeks, all because of a beautiful Golden at the end of the leash.” When not bringing happiness and cheer to others, Shelby and Cash can be found retrieving the morning paper, playing fetch and swimming in the pool while their owner Debbie Taylor-Warner is a dental hygienist by day and leader for the Debbie Taylor Band by night. he Miami Dolphins recently completed its sixth edition of their signature event, Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC). More than 3,300 cancer fighters ran, biked, walked, volunteered and donated their time throughout South Florida. Since 2010, the initiative has raised more than $11.55 million dollars. One hundred percent of the funds raised went directly to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for critical cancer research. This annual event has proven itself to be the largest event fundraiser in the NFL. Participants included Grand Marshals and Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum and Head Coach Adam Gase, as well as Dolphins players and alumni such as Dan Marino, Nat Moore, Dick Anderson, A.J. Duhe, Kim Bokamper, Chris Conlin, John Offerdahl, Mark Duper, Michael Thomas and Ndamukong Suh. The event culminated with a Concert Celebration presented by Pepsi at the stadium on the Hard Rock Stage by Grammy Award winners Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge. However, the Dolphins Cancer Challenge has another exclusive opportunity for the South Florida community to be cancer fighters, as they will continue raising funds at the inaugural “DCC Celebrity Golf Tournament” hosted by Turnberry Isle Resort & Golf Club on April 4, 2016. Co-Chaired by Don Soffer and James Caan, the tournament will offer cancer fighters a chance to golf and interact with athletes and other celebrity guests. benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. “We are excited to add another opportunity for cancer fighters to raise money for research in South Florida,” Dolphins Cancer Challenge CEO Michael Mandich said. “As a life-long golfer this event makes raising money for Sylvester extra special and widens the participation options for people who want to fight cancer through the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.” Golfers will tee off for a round of scramble-golf on the world-famous Soffer Course, home to a number of LPGA and PGA events. Players will enjoy a complimentary, VIP shopping experience at the Pro Shop onsite exclusively for the “DCC Celebrity Golf Tournament”. Signature food and drinks will be served on the course with a cocktail reception and awards ceremony to end the day. “The participants, donors and partners of the Dolphins Cancer Challenge are dedicated to improving people’s lives through the financial support of innovative cancer research,” Miami Dolphins President & CEO and DCC VI Chair Tom Garfinkel said. “We wanted to expand the scope of ways for anyone to be a cancer fighter. This golf tournament provides an additional opportunity – along with our bike ride, 5k run/walk, Fall Family Fest and concert to help in this fight.” To register for a foursome, please visit DolphinsCancerChallenge. com. Additional sponsorship opportunities are also still available. For information, please call (305)943-6799.

Take Advantage of Aventura’s Fitness Friendly Community SECTION HEAD community news
By Beverly Perkins
T
he City of Aventura is known as being the perfect setting for an active lifestyle. The many parks and trails for walking, jogging, running and riding are abundant throughout the city. In addition, three community parks provide fitness trails with exercise stations. One of the more popular locations is the Don Soffer Exercise Trail. The 3.1 mile path circles the Turnberry Isle Resort golf course along Country Club Drive. The trail consists of a 10-foot wide paved ADA (American Disability Act) accessible path. It is also landscaped with bountiful shade trees complete with ground lighting, benches, chilled water fountains, trash receptacles and crosswalks.
Located just south of the Lehman Causeway and east of West Country Club Drive is Founders Park. The 12-acre park honors the visionaries responsible for the incorporation of the City in November of 1995. The northern section boasts a quarter-mile, four-stationed exercise trail along with three tennis courts and a multi-purpose athletic field. Waterways Park also provides an exercise path with two fitness stations on its 7-acre property. Besides the local parks being prominent areas to exercise, this past year the
City focused on implementing a safer more pedestrian and bike friendly community. Intersections along Country Club Drive now have Pedestrian Warning signs which will be replaced by reflective flashing beacon signs this spring. The Don Soffer Exercise Trail will be receiving new and improved path lighting by the summer. Bike paths along the Lehman Causeway that connect the internal system to Collins Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard was completed by The Florida Department of Transportation. Furthermore, some of the main roads have been converted to dual use for cars and bikes. Currently, the City is working on securing a vendor which will provide a city-wide bike share program as offered in other large cities throughout the country. The program allows riders to take bikes from docking stations placed around the City with the ability to return them to other locations. The anticipated new service should hopefully begin late this summer. The Don Soffer Exercise Trail is located at 19999 W. Country Club Road, Founders Park is located at 3105 NE 190th Street and Waterways Park is located at 3301 NE 213th Street all in Aventura, 33180
Celebrate National Poetry Month by Entering the 6th Annual Teen Poetry Contest By Beverly Perkins
I
n honor of National Poetry Month, The Miami-Dade Public Library System is holding its 6th Annual Teen Poetry Contest through April 10th. For two decades now, millions of students, teachers, readers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, bloggers and of course, poets are taking this dedicated month to honor poetry’s important place in our culture and our lives. Inspired by the successful celebrations of Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March), the Academy of American Poets established National Poetry Month in April of 1996. The purpose of the month-long observance is to: ▸▸ Highlight the extraordinary achievement of American poets, ▸▸ Encourage the reading of poems, ▸▸ Assist educators in bringing poetry into their classrooms, ▸▸ Increase attention to poetry by national and local media, ▸▸ Encourage increased publication and distribution of poetry books, ▸▸ Support poets and poetry As part of the worldwide literary celebration, the Miami-Dade Public Library System wants to inspire teens to join the festivities by writing a short poem. Poems will be judged and prizes will be awarded. Those interested may enter in two age categories, 12-14 and 15-19 years old. Soffer Health Institute Delivers South Florida’s Finest Cardiovascular and Vein Care By Beverly Perkins
T
he Soffer Health Institute created facilities to give their patients the finest preventative treatment that the world has to offer in addition to their cutting-edge evaluation and disease prevention methods. Regardless if one needs a cardiologist, vein treatments, primary care physician, a weight loss program, allergy solutions and/or senior care, Soffer Health Institute offers the highest quality medical services to suit all their patients’ needs.
Dr. Ariel Soffer, MD, FACC, is a board certified cardiologist and director of the Soffer Health Institute in Aventura, where he and a dedicated team of physicians and nurses provide truly state-of-the-art cardiovascular and vein care. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1990. After serving as a chief of cardiology and teaching in two local medical school programs, he launched his private practice in 1997. Dr. Soffer has also been honored to have a weekly segment as the Chief Medical Expert for WPLG Local 10 News with a newscast called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion”. Dr. Ariel Soffer, MD, FACC took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his practice.
What makes Soffer Vein & Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, different? As a cardiovascular specialist for almost
20 years, I am proud to have a staff that has the experience and expertise to treat all circulationrelated issues for our patients. Our philosophy is to use the least invasive techniques. We call it the “LIT method” and we strive to treat our patients like family. I have dedicated my life to improving the quality of my patients’ lives.
I have worked hard to obtain the skill set and tools necessary to diagnose and personally tend to their heart, artery and venous issues. Soffer Vein & Vascular is a nationally recognized center of excellence for the leading laser technology

A division of the Soffer Health Institute provider, and, right in our office, we train other physicians on the most cutting edge technology in treating vein disorders. I enjoy lecturing all over the world on the heart-vein connection and treatment modalities. In the past year, I have lectured at cardiology and vein conferences in Chicago, Orlando, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Boston.
Is there a vein treatment that does not use needles and does not require surgery? Yes,
one of the latest cutting edge tools that we use at Soffer Vein & Vascular is the new Cutera Excel V laser that treats spider veins on the face and legs. The Excel V uses quick pulses of light energy at varying frequencies to zap the small veins without affecting the surrounding tissue. The treatment is virtually painless and the results have been terrific for both the veins on the face and legs. Most of our patients who are candidates for this treatment see significant improvement in their treated veins within two to six weeks of treatment.
Could varicose veins be more than a cosmetic issue? In about 50% of the cases, cosmetic vein issues are often a sign of treatable underlying circulation issues. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. The leg swelling that is often considered to be a problem with the heart or blood pressure is often just veins underneath the skin that have failed to work properly. With a proper diagnosis, the patient can literally be cured in minutes and avoid years of ineffective drug treatments that ultimately prove ineffective in these situations. Symptoms often associated with vein disease include leg pain, discoloration, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, itching, restless leg syndrome, cramping, burning and fatigue.
Is it okay to postpone treatment? Varicose
vein disease is a progressive disease. If left untreated, it will only get worse and will require more extensive treatment in the future.
Once veins are treated, do they come back? When treatment is done by a vein
specialist most patients get excellent results. By treating the feeder veins we close the source of the problem and lessen the chance of recurrence.
Can vein treatment improve your circulation? Yes, in addition to making your legs look
cosmetically better, the treatment can actually improve your circulation so that you have healthier legs as well. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and are often part of a greater circulatory problem that only an experienced physician should diagnose and treat.
How can I get the Soffer Vein Institute to evaluate me? We accept most insurance and
offer complementary initial consultations. We have also developed a free smartphone app available in the App Store that will allow you to take a picture of your veins and send it to us for a virtual doctor visit. This app was developed by Soffer Vein & Vascular and is used all over the world to help diagnose and treat disease.
Other than vein valves, what other cardiovascular valves do you have experience with? As a cardiovascular specialist, I was
trained in all valves of the circulatory system. However, I have had a special interest in a disorder known as mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVP). MVP, occurring mainly in women, is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. I have written a book entitled Mitral Valve Prolapse: A Comprehensive Patient’s Guide to a Happier and Healthier Life, which is available on Amazon.com. It is already in its second edition. Readers of the book from all over the globe quite often end up visiting our center for a consultation.

Local Teen Needs Help Filling Kosher Pantry for Passover By Beverly Perkins

aron Kredi, a 10th grader at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, is on a mission to help feed those with special dietary needs. He wants to spread the word that the Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank (JCS KFB) is in need of not just kosher foods for those that observe kosher (kashrut) dietary laws, but gluten free foods as well. Aaron was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (CD) at the age of seven and has learned over the years how to manage his special diet. However, this inquisitive teen was grocery shopping a few years ago with his mother at a kosher market and realized how expensive it is to be Gluten Free and Kosher. He then began to wonder how someone who is in need a food bank would obtain gluten free food. “According to the CDC 1 in 133 Americans have an autoimmune disease called Celiac. As someone who has Celiac and has a kosher home, I knew there had to be clients of the JCS Kosher Food Bank of South Florida that would be in need of gluten free products,” says Kredi. “I visited there and spoke to Director Bonnie Schwartzbaum who told me they do in fact have quite a few clients with this need. That is when I decided to take action and establish the ‘Gluten Free Shelves’.” The JCS Kosher Food Bank is South Florida’s largest food bank supplying Jewish households during times of hardship by providAaron Kredi with JCS Kosher Food Bank Director Bonnie Schwartzbaum ing them critically
important food items and other daily necessities. The recipients are able to select non-perishable staples and canned goods, fresh produce, meat and frozen items during pre-arranged and prescheduled appointments to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Last year, Kredi worked with Schwartzbaum and created the “Gluten Free Section” of the Kosher Food Bank. Since then, this ambitious young man has enlisted the help of his alumni schools. He has placed collection containers in Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary and Highland Oaks Middle Schools. Students, teachers and families can make donations in the front offices during school hours. Furthermore, he has taken his cause to social media and set up a tax deductible page. The JCS Kosher Food Bank is a 501c (3) organization and all donations are fully deductible. Please visit Aaron’s Facebook page, Gluten Free Shelves for more information and the link to the donation page. Golden Beach Fundraiser Raises $50,000 for Celebrate Israel community news

srael’s Independence Day (Yom Ha’atzmaut) begins on sundown May 11th, but the celebrations honoring the 68th Independence Day have already started. Recently, about 100 people attended a fundraiser at the home of Eric Bouskila in Golden Beach. The loyal supporter of the Israeli American Council (IAC) raised $50,000 for Celebrate Israel that night. The national event, hosted by the Israel American Council (IAC), is held in numerous locations throughout the United States. In attendance was Bassem Eid, a Palestinian human rights activist, who spoke at the South Florida private residence educating guests on why it’s important to celebrate Israel as an independent country. Bassem has traveled widely to lecture on the Palestine-Israel conflict and has attended international conferences. In recent years he has traveled to Canada, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom where he has presented to thousands. On this particular evening, Eid discussed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS Movement) which is a global campaign attempting to increase economic and political pressure on Israel to comply with Palestinian rights. “Israel is the only country around Eric Bouskila, Eyal Peretz, Bassem Eid, Amir Hayun the world that is still feeding millions Palestinians,” said Eid. He

reinforced the concept when he told the crowd that nearly two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are receiving their food, medicine and electricity only from Israel and not from any other Arab country. Eid went on to talk about the violence coming from the Palestinians residing in Gaza despite the support Israel has shown them over the years. It’s extremely important now more than ever to celebrate Israel,” said Nir Lerman, program director for (IAC). “We have movements like BDS that fight us on a constant basis. However, we need to remember the wonderful elements of Israel, and to bring that spirit of Israel to South Florida. We are delighted to offer families the opportunity to experience what this extraordinary country is all about.” “We are deeply moved by the support we are receiving from the South Florida Jewish community and many other groups, organizations and individuals who stepped up and demonstrated an uncompromising dedication to the state of Israel,” said Florida Chair Rani Ben-David. “This support is instrumental to this wonderful upcoming and important event – Celebrate Israel – that will take place on May 22nd.” The Celebrate Israel event will be held from 11 a.m. to sunset on May 22 at C.B. Smith Park, 900 North Flamingo Road. Tickets are cost $10 online and $15 at the door. Family packs cost $20 through March. 50 Years of Celebrating the Arts at Highland Oaks Elementary By Beverly Perkins
V
irginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary School has had a long tradition of celebrating and appreciating the arts. This year they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cultural Arts Day. On this dedicated day, 300 artists from throughout the community visited the school to share their talents and to demonstrate their knowledge and skills of a great variety of artistry. Despite the amount of artists it took to make this event a success, the day was also made possible by over 50 volunteers that gave their time and assistance. During Cultural Arts Day, the entire school population of 750 students, grades Pre-K- eighth grades, are encouraged to participate and interact with the 28 performing artist groups. Each class is assigned to six artists of which they rotate through in twenty minute increments. The annual event, for five decades has exposed students to the many forms of the arts from painting and violins to ballet and Tae Kwon Do. The purpose of the special yearly event is to introduce students to artistic activities at every level that they can pursue in middle school, high school and beyond. The true lesson is that art has no age. Everyone can be an artist no matter how old they are. “Without this annual day many of our students will not have the opportunity to experience artistry in its most expressive form- ‘live’,” says Event Chairperson Michelle Wiseman Kredi. “In my
18
APRIL 2016 | OUR CITY AVENTURA
eleven years chairing this event I have seen musicians, dancers, culinary artists, scientific artists, martial artists, quilters, painters, metal artists, photographers and barbershop quartets to name a few.” This year many artists returned again among some brand new ones. Quite a bunch of these professional performers are Highland Oaks alumni, parents or relatives of alumni which make the connection even greater. In addition, other artists were visiting students from neighboring schools, Highland Oaks Middle and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior. Although not professional yet, these older students provided lessons and engaged the young and eager students in areas such as Jazz Band & Drumline, cheerleading and Spanish Club. “Cultural Arts Day is a time for our school community to pause and experience and appreciate the benefits of various forms of visual and performing arts,” says Principal Scott Saperstein. “This day also allows our students to expand their mind and smile with excitement, as they enjoy the sights, sounds and movement shared by talented local artists. We can’t thank them enough for their time and commitment to the arts and our students.” Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary is located at 20500 NE 24th Avenue, Miami. riel Fishman, Ahava Greenbaum, Emily Davidovic, Daniela Aronsky and Yael Tawil, middle school students at Hochberg Preparatory Academy, are star students and athletes at the exceptional North Miami Beach school. All girls have been honored with the prestigious Miami Heat/Miami Herald Academic Sportsmanship Team Players Award. Ariel Fishman is this year’s outstanding recipient. In order to be nominated, players must exhibit sportsmanship, present good grades and assist with improvement in the classroom. Hochberg Athletic Director and Coach Andy Degen has had the privilege of knowing and coaching these girls since their elementary years. Quite the athlete, Fishman has participated on the flag football, soccer, volleyball and basketball teams throughout her childhood so far. Always managing to amaze everyone with her athletic and leadership abilities, this teen stars on the
school’s basketball team where she is also the team captain. Her assistance, leadership and play earned her the 2016 nomination. “Ariel is a hard worker who plays harder for her team and coach then she does for herself. She takes winning seriously but being part of a team as the most important factor,” says Coach Degen. “The core four, Ariel Fishman, Ahava Greenbaum, Daniela Aronsky and Emily Davidovic might be the best I’ve coached in my twenty years. The best part is now each and every one of their 17 teammates are following their lead of teamwork effort and love of sports which has brought Hochberg Prep to an elite level in girls’ athletics!” When not playing for Hochberg, most of the girls
play on the travel basketball team Mo Steel, at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center which is currently ranked second in the state. Over on that campus, they are coached by Jeff Fogel who has been affected by ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Ahava Greenbaum created a community service project, Points4Love, in which she hopes to create awareness of the debilitating illness and help others also affected with various disabilities. Together the team is in the process of making a music video dedicated to their beloved coach. The girls are like sisters and all share the common goal in making a difference in the community. This season was dedicated to Coach Jeff and $300 was raised for his foundation.

Why Is It Important to Keep Children at a Healthy Weight? By Dr. Gerardo Valdes
Ask the Expert
C
hildhood obesity is at an all-time high in the United States. This is directly related to problems that lead to a higher risk of developing many medical problems. The CDC reports that the number of children that are overweight has doubled in the last 30 years and tripled among adolescents. Children are considered overweight if their body mass index (calculated from their height and weight) is above the 85th percentile compared to children of the same sex and age. Recent statistics prove that in the United States 22.8% of children ages 2 to 5 years old are either overweight or obese, and approximately 34% for children ages 6 years old and above. This alarming trend places children at risk for developing a wide range of medical problems that were commonly seen only in adults in the past. Some of the more serious medical conditions that have increased in the past 30 years are diabetes type 2, elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. All of these medical problems are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. The problem is that these medical conditions were more commonly seen in adulthood, so patients were exposed to these risk factors for shorter period of time. However, when children who are 8, 10 or 12 years old develop these medical problems at such an early age, they are exposed for many more years to the effects of elevated blood sugar, cholesterol and or blood pressure. The longer exposure will likely lead to complications from these conditions at a much earlier age, and significantly decrease longevity, quality of life, or both. There are also other less talked about consequences of childhood obesity, including psychological issues, such as lower self-esteem and increase risk for depression. Some of the reasons for this increasing trend of obesity in childhood are a greater availability of higher energy dense foods, such as junk food (donuts, cookies, candy bars, etc.) and sugary beverages. Unfortunately, besides these foods being very calorie rich, many are also made with high fructose corn syrup as their sweetener versus standard table sugar. High fructose corn syrup is responsible for an exaggerated sugar and insulin response after ingestion and cause more weight gain than standard sugar. Greater portion size has also been associated with greater weight gain. As the manufactures offer larger portions, the intake of calories increases and so does weight. Thirty years ago, the standard soda can size was 8 ounces; today the standard soda bottle (individual size) at most stores is the 20 ounces. This is more than twice the calories! Activity level is an important cause of increasing weight in the U.S. Kids spend more time watching television, playing video games, and less time playing outside, compared to 30 years ago. There are many more factors implicated in the increased obesity rates in the U.S. This is a multifactorial problem, meaning it is caused by an accumulation of factors that have created the perfect conditions to lead to this epidemic. It’s imperative to understand that getting children to lose weight is extremely important. Helping children maintain an optimal, healthy weight decreases their future risk for many medical problems in the future and improves their overall quality of life. Dr. Valdes Weight Loss Program is located at 17900 NW 5th Street, Suite #203-C, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-613-5777 or visit www.drvaldesweightloss.com.

Chikah is no ordinary cat. She may be a Domestic Shorthair, however this 16 year old is a Hemingway. She has extra toes just as the acclaimed author’s menagerie of felines. Her favorite person is her human mommy, Susanne. She likes to be outside all day and enjoys bringing her beloved owner gifts that she hunted for. She dislikes store bought pet food and prefers homecooked meals. She loves catnip and snuggling under the blankets. She was last seen taking a flight to Israel where she was a purr-fect passenger.

Aventura Marketing Council Coordinates 2016 Law Day Celebration By Beverly Perkins
Last year’s theme was “Magna Carta: Symbol of Freedom Under Law: Personal Liberty v Governmental Regulation, Does Florida Law Requiring a Driver’s License Violate the Right to Travel”. This year the nation marks the 50th anniversary of one of the nation’s best-known U.S. Supreme Court cases, Miranda v. Arizona. Therefore, it is appropriate that this year’s essay Law Day theme is Miranda: More than Words. “The entries by the students over the years have been extraordinary, and many winners have themselves become attorneys,” says Esther Blynn, Attorney and event Co-Chair. “ In fact, the sponsor of the first prize award, attorney Russell Lazega, won first place in the contest sponsored by the North Dade Bar Association, and presented by my husband and myself, which he states inspired him to become an attorney.” Judge Adalberto “Bert” Jordan, Appellate Court, 11th Judicial Circuit, is the featured speaker as elected and appointed officials from over 20 cities are invited to fill the audience on May 13th at 10:00am. Students from the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High Law Club are always present for this event and the North Dade Bar Association will announce the winners of their annual essay contest. 2016 Law Day program is on Friday, May 13 at 10:00am at the North Dade Justice Center, 15555 N. Biscayne Blvd., North Miami 33160.

F
or almost six decades our legal system has been celebrated on May 1st. The American Bar Association (ABA) proposed a day be set aside after President Dwight D. Eisenhower created Law Day in 1958. In 1961, Congress by Joint Resolution established the official date. In the early 1980’s, Michael R. Blynn, Esq., then Director and subsequently President of the North Dade Bar Association, proposed a Law Day Essay Contest, first for high school students, and then for Middle School Students in public schools throughout North Miami Dade County to compete for monetary prizes and recognition at Law Day by writing essays each year on the theme proposed by the American Bar Association. Since 1986, attorneys Michael and Esther Blynn, have co-chaired the Essay Contest. For the past several years Mrs. Blynn has been the North Dade Bar Association Vice President for Law Day. She continually carries on the essay contest tradition started by her husband as it has become the centerpiece for Law Day. What initially started out as a small community event has since expanded to a County-wide celebration at the North Dade Justice Center. The North Dade Bar Association Middle School Essay Contest is for seventh and eighth grade students only, and over the years, the sponsors of the awards have expanded from the North Dade Bar Association, to other voluntary bar associations, private attorneys and law firms, as well as corporate entities.
