South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance
O
n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

A “PAWS”itively PURR-fect Morning! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
housands of four-legged friends and their humans came out to Bayfront Park last month to “Walk for the Animals”. No bones about it, the annual event is one of the largest to help the homeless animals in Miami, and participants raised almost an astonishing $100,000. “The Walk for the Animals is a feel-good event that brings everyone together to help raise money to help care for the more than 400 homeless cats and dogs every day at our Soffer and Fine Adoption Center, Audrey Love Intake and Quarantine Pavilion and in our foster care program,” said Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “It is great to see so many different groups of people
come out with their pets and show their support!” The animal loving community gathered early on a gorgeous Saturday morning for a one-mile walk around one of Miami’s most scenic and popular parks before enjoying a variety of fun-filled activities designed for them and their beloved furry friends. “We were honored to have some very notable “paw”sonalities join us that morning. Acting as Grand Marshal for the first year ever was Miami-Dade County Mayor, Carlos A. Gimenez, who presented us with a proclamation. Emceeing the event for his tenth consecutive year was Ryan Phillips, meteorologist for NBC6, and joining him as emcee once again was Julie Guy, morning show host at 101.5 LITE FM,” said Melanie Ochoa, Humane Society of Greater Miami Communications and Marketing Coordinator. The Purina ProPlan Performance Team dazzled the crowd with incredible tricks. Their amazing performances inspired many attendees to stop at
the Doggie Fun Zone to give their pups a thrilling moment in the spotlight as they became track stars in a fun agility course. They were also eligible to participate in the always-popular “Best Kisser” and “Look Alike” contests. Those who did not have a special furry friend had the chance to adopt their best fur-ever friends at the Adoption Arena, where local rescues had some of their precious pets up for adoption. Delicious treats and refreshments from Toby’s Concessions and the Bakery Booth satisfied walkers’ hunger and thirst after the brisk stroll around the park. Many exciting raffles, contests, and carnival-style games were abundant for those with both two and four legs. Save the date for the 20th Anniversary Walk for the Animals on March 2, 2019 at Bayfront Park! n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create
an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.
▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.
How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Remembering the Past in the Present – NMB Magical History Tour BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t’s always a beautiful day in the neighborhood, and the NMB Magical History Tour is back again in its 5th year to share the rich history behind the beauty. On April 8th the free 3-hour free informative and nostalgic guided tour will depart the NMB Library promptly at 1:00pm. From the day Captain William H Fulford came upon land by way of the Oleta River and discovered Fulford by The Sea, to today, where the City of North Miami Beach is bustling and thriving into the 21st century, passengers will learn historical facts, hear humorous stories and see city monuments, and the beautiful places that the city is proud to call their own. The tour will be given by local historian, Alan Sokol. He will share stories with residents, community members, and tourists during the ride through the city with stops at many fascinating points of interest. A visit to the historical Fulford-By-The-Sea monument is a definite place to visit since it’s one of the largest fountains in Miami-Dade County. The Coral Rock
Wall is also on the agenda. The one wall left of four is a reminder that City Hall stands where the city’s Central Park used to be. Greynolds Park, a previous quarry, is also a highlight. Passengers will also get a glimpse of what homes looked like when the city was established 91 years ago. The city is fortunate to have beautiful Mediterranean Revival homes still standing. Some are listed on the historic preservation register of Miami-Dade County. Another favorite site on the journey is The Ancient Spanish Monastery, the oldest building in the Western
Hemisphere. This NMB treasure is considered “the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history” by “Time” magazine due to its history of its past and how it came to be rebuilt. Guests marvel at the beauty of the late Romanesque early Gothic Cistercian architecture. “As we travel through our five square miles, Alan Sokol gives humorous accounts of our past political history and never fails to gain sighs from our guests when he tells the story of how the city gave up the beach because the upkeep was too much to manage. The political follies that ensued from that decision, make today’s local politics seem tame,” says Commissioner Barbara Kramer. “The 3-hour ride provides intriguing information that excites locals and foreigners alike.” The NMB Magical History Tour departs from the NMB Library, 1601 NE 164th Street, North Miami Beach at 1:00 pm. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. For more information, please call 305-948-2957.

bout four decades ago, the Young Men and Women’s Hebrew Association of South Florida established a satellite facility in North Miami to provide recreational and cultural services to the increasing number of Jewish families moving to the area. Fast forward to today, and the 17.5-acre Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center (MAR-JCC) campus has become the heart of the North Miami/ North Miami Beach/Aventura Jewish population. Although the facility was started as a recreational center for those with Jewish values and beliefs, everyone of all denominations and backgrounds are welcome. The MAR-JCC represents a model of acceptance, understanding, and diversity. In addition to the diverse menu of classes, programs, workshops, sports leagues and clinics, and special events, the Michael-Ann Russell JCC is more than a hub for activities, but a social meeting place as well. Many come to use the health and wellness center while others come to socialize in the many eating and play areas. Now with the expansion of the new 40,000 square-foot building there will be plenty more space to enjoy, sit, and schmooze.
The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is Growing to Serve the Community Better Fanny F. Hanono, MAR-JCC Chair of the Board, recently took the time to answer some questions about the campus and the new building.
What is the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center? We are a social service agency that serves the entire community from birth to senior adults.
Though membership-based, some programs are open to members and non-members. Member pricing may be lower for some programs than for non-members. Tell us about the new highly-anticipated structure. The new facility is slated to open in Spring 2018. It will be called the “Feldenkreis Cultural Center”, named in honor of George & Mariita Feldenkreis, Fanny F. Hanono & Family, Oscar & Ellen Feldenkreis & Family. The structure stands on its own, but upon completion will be connected with a passage way and open to a grand reception area. We are excited to have more space for all our diverse programs, and enrichment offerings,

What is planned for the Feldenkreis Cultural Center? We will have the following: ▸▸ State-of-the-art Gymnastics Center, with parental viewing area ▸▸ More Dance Studios ▸▸ Dedicated Group Fitness and Pilates rooms ▸▸ Dedicated Spinning room ▸▸ Alan & Diane Lieberman Theater, which will seat more than 200 and can be converted to a special event space. ▸▸ Meditation Room ▸▸ 2 Music labs for lessons ▸▸ Art Rooms, including a kiln ▸▸ Our Hebraica program for Grades 1-12 will have its own Youth Lounge.
What programs will you be adding to the new facility? New classes are continuously being added to our new schedule. However, it won’t be finalized until we open our doors. The schedule will feature more of what we do best: Ceramics, Cooking, Gymnastics, Dance, Lectures, Music Lessons, Painting, Pilates, Spinning, and Yoga. The (theater) event space is perfect for a special “simcha” event for up to 300 people. The Feldenkreis Cultural Center will
allow us to also host more local theater programs that contact us regularly when they are looking for a stage. How is The Victory Center going to use the space? The Victory Center has designed its own area for its students to include therapy, media, vocational training and regular class rooms. Summer is approaching, what do you offer for children? We open Camp Sol Taplin for children ages 2 to 15-years-old from June 18th-August 10th. However, this is not a typical day camp, we not only offer a variety of camp activities, but have more than 30 options for families to mix-and-match to create their own summer experience. From sports and dance to swimming and theater plus robotics, coding and graphic design, we have an abundance of options for every child including a sleepaway camp experience for older campers. Who can be a member of the MAR-JCC? Everyone in the community is eligible for membership. We have a group that fits everyone. We ask that anyone interested

On a Happy Note…Scheck Hillel Band Students Earn High Marks BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or the past six consecutive years, Scheck Hillel has hosted “District 20’s Thursday Solo & Ensemble” to create an opportunity for studentmusicians to participate in the adjudication and uphold their observance of Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath). This opportunity is made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) and Scheck Hillel. At the conclusion of 2017, Scheck Hillel hosted its student-musicians and others from Ransom Everglades School and Miami Country Day School. To prepare for the competition, students performing their solo with a piano accompanist had to have their music approved by the State. They then were adjudicated by a State-certified judge. The results were incredible! Sixteen Scheck Hillel Community School students received either a “Superior” (highest rating) or an “Excellent” (secondhighest rating) for their solos in the 2017 adjudication. The eight students who earned an “Excellent” rating: Jonathan Abbo, Grade 11 (Alto Saxophone), Michael Berenstein, Grade 10 (Alto Saxophone), Raquel Dimitri, Grade 11 (Trumpet), Eli Gelb, Grade 10 (Tenor Saxophone), Emily Rodman,

ACES Sparks Innovative Ideas for Teachers BY BEVERLY PERKINS
R
ight before spring, The Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) had their first “Spark Conference”. The on-campus mini conference was created to encourage innovation among teachers. Educators are continually searching and researching new methods and strategies that will help stimulate students’ motivation to learn while encouraging them to reach their full potential. The new annual conference was a great vehicle by teachers for teachers. The full day of professional development was presented “EdCamp” style. Ten topics were chosen based on a survey sent out prior to the event. Teachers were able to select topics that interested them in one-hour informal roundtable discussions. This provided the chance for them to share, brainstorm, and ask questions. The flexibility allowed the educators to move from session to session during the allotted time instead of committing to one single topic of interest.
In addition to the “EdCamp” sessions, teachers could attend other sessions which focused on educational issues they face daily in their classrooms. These topics on the forefront included Student-Centered
Learning, Yoga in the Classroom, Experiencing Dyslexia, Classroom Management, Using HyperDocs for Interactive Lessons, Team-Building in the Classroom and Infusing Technology into Writing. The day also included a general session that all teachers attended with a former student as a guest speaker. The student spoke about his time at ACES and how those experiences related to his high school experience.
Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

Because ACES strives to balance student choice, ownership, and a voice in the learning process, while creating a personalized learning environment with academic rigor, the “Spark Conference” was a perfect way to have educators do the same. This opportunity allowed them to “spark” their creativity and reinvigorate their spirit through learning topics that integrated standards-based instruction with educational topics that fit their needs and passions. Teachers were overheard giving positive feedback by saying such things as, “It was all done well.”, “I liked that we could pick the sessions that were interesting to us.” “I honestly felt like all of the sessions I attended were meaningful and a good use of my time.”, and “It was also fun and engaging!” The conference allowed teachers to learn from each other, discover the many wonderful things happening in classrooms, and inspire one another to grow as professional educators.

Signs, Symptoms & Help for Rheumatoid Arthritis BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.
R
heumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including: sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past
Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

Unfortunately, however, our cause has quickly been twisted into a partisan debate. Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of
Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Interaction with People Experiencing Homelessness BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM
P
eople who experience homelessness are often engaged in prohibited conduct which includes being intoxicated, loitering, prowling, fighting, trespassing, aggressive panhandling, soliciting, urinating/defecating, consuming alcoholic beverages in certain public places, camping or sleeping in parks, littering, obstructing sidewalks, disturbing the peace by loud and unreasonable noise, using offensive words, behaving in a threatening manner and more. Therefore, homelessness is an extremely complex social problem that can impact the quality of life in a community. While being homeless is not a crime, the disorderly issues associated with homelessness are criminal in nature. Because many of the crimes involving people experiencing homelessness are misdemeanors, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) and elected officials of the City of North Miami Beach (City) have to strike the right balance between homelessness as a social issue and a criminal issue. As a result, the City and the NMBPD join forces with the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust to assist this community’s most vulnerable subpopulation. For instance, the City installed a homeless meter in front of City Hall to collect donations. We work together to direct individuals in need to resources and services. When interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness, the officers of the NMBPD resort to criminal sanctions or the threat of criminal sanctions only as a last resort and only where there is a genuine threat to public safety. Ourhomelessness City Media Crossword Many people experiencing are on the4/18 streets because of substance abuse and/or mental illness.
