Getting to the Bottom of Your Digestive Troubles Anyone who has suffered digestive problems knows that symptoms can range from mild to severe pain and bloating to diarrhea or constipation, none of which sounds like Ronnie Pimentel, MD much fun. But in truth a lot more could actually be going on. It’s important to find out as early as possible, because some issues can lead to more serious, chronic illnesses if left untreated.

of digestive disorders much more palatable. For example, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an important tool that allows doctors to see your internal organs very clearly. EUS provides very high resolution images, because it does not have to go through barriers such as skin and bone, as compared to surface ultrasound.

Your digestive system is a complex and extensive part of the body. It starts at your mouth, down your esophagus to your stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, and ends at your anus. It’s responsible for helping your body absorb essential nutrients and then getting rid of the waste, which are very important functions. So, if you continue to suffer from digestive disturbances, it’s probably time to make an appointment with your doctor. Not only will you be more comfortable once you’ve gotten to the source of the issue, more importantly, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce damage to your esophagus and GI tract.

EUS is very useful in helping physicians evaluate cancers or other tumors of the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon, liver, gall bladder, digestive tract and rectum, as well as to plan the most effective treatment strategies. It can even provide good images of smaller masses that may not be detected using other technology. And, preliminary results are available immediately, allowing for timely staging and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. In fact, in the past 5 years EUS has become utilized more and more in this capacity.

Today, gastroenterologists are using advanced technology that make diagnosis and treatment

According to Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist Ronnie Pimentel, MD, “the EUS procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting, and usually takes close to 45 minutes.” He adds that “patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure, and are able to go home the same day.”

How EUS works EUS is much like a regular endoscopy procedure in that a probe is inserted down the esophagus and into the stomach.

The difference, however, is that the probe’s tip has an ultrasound camera on it that provides a very clear view of the stomach and nearby organs. By getting so close to the organs, EUS allows doctors to take a biopsy through the stomach wall, by removing a small amount of tissue for testing. Getting a biopsy this way is more comfortable for patients than a traditional needle biopsy through the skin, and more critical is the fact that it reduces the risk of “seeding,” or spreading the tumor through the skin or to other parts of the body. Dr. Pimentel states that, “another important use for EUS is to perform nerve blocks for severe pain in cancer patients. We also can insert markers (known as fiducials) to guide future radiation treatments so that they target only the tumor, not the healthy tissue around it.” In addition, EUS is sometimes used to help find answers for patients with abdominal pain that doctors have been unable to explain.

Summer Fun is at your Fingertips

A

s we enter the second month of summer vacation, and the novelty of days with no school has worn off, many parents (myself included) are hearing the familiar phrase: “What are we doing today?” Fortunately, we live in a community where there are many great things to do all summer long. Many parents took advantage of Our City Magazine’s Camp Guide to find their kids the perfect summer camp experience. It’s available online (www.ourcitymedia.com) and many camp programs run through August so there’s still plenty of time to sign up. Other families may be spending time traveling to parts near and far. Most of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate our country’s 240th Independence Day. I plan on slow-cooking ribs on the barbecue. If you are looking for something to do right now, have no fear! Check out Our City Magazine’s monthly community calendar – it’s full of local events and activities for every age and every interest. Regardless of what you do this summer, remember to stay safe. Cheers,

During the luncheon presented by Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, Broward County Mayor Marty Kiar honorably made a proclamation that May 13th is Lauren Book Day in Broward County for her work as an activist for childhood sexual abuse prevention. Lauren’s Kids, an Aventura based 501(c) (3) organization educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through awareness campaigns such as the annual walk, in addition to in-school curricula and speaking engagements around the country and the world. advocating the passage of nearly two dozen laws to support survivors and protect children from predators, with the ultimate goal of preventing sexual abuse. Guests also heard from Milena, a compelling foster youth who shared how she has personally benefitted from ChildNet’s efforts in placing her with a loving foster family and how it has prepared her to reach her goals. Aventura Professional Women Have Networking Opportunities with the NAPW By Beverly Perkins

I

n today’s world there are many women in the workplace trying to move up the company ladder, trying to build their own empire, or just trying to be a success. These aspiring professionals want to expand their knowledge, portfolios and careers. However, they don’t know where to go to further their connections and are unaware of potential opportunities. Fortunately for those in the Aventura area, a chapter of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) is right in the backyard. The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) provides opportunities for women in Aventura to get together monthly to network, make great connections and learn more about the businesses and area they reside. NAPW invests in promoting and empowering women’s success. In recent months, the NAPW has gained much public attention as its network has grown to 850,000 women who promote and empower each other. The organization has highly advanced methods for women to socially and interactively network in support of their aspirations, connections, and achievements in business and beyond. Members have access to over 200 local chapters nationwide and eChapter webinars available bi-monthly. Marsha Feldman, an admired Aventura resident and community activist is the President of the Aventura chapter. She promises to help these go-getters achieve their goals by promoting their businesses and spreading awareness of their products and services to her large network of individuals. Feldman has grown the NAPW Aventura chapter to over 400 members thus far and has no plans on stopping. This former Mrs. Aventura International 2015 and Mrs. Florida Woman of Achievement 2016 says, “I am whole heartedly interested in inspiring women’s success and making positive community impacts.”

Thankfully, for her own organizational and technical skills, she recruited Vice President Tatyana Sobolevsky to assist with the chapter’s responsibilities. These meetings allow members to empower and promote themselves, their businesses, foster team work, and share information in coordination with the month’s topic. The Aventura chapter graciously accepts invitations from businesses wanting to host their two hour meetings at local restaurants, gyms, spas, clubs, building conference rooms - essentially anywhere an average of 20 ladies can get together to expose an area or business within the community. Not only can local businesses present their services and products to members, but NAPW’s networking capabilities can further spread the word of their proud brand and image for future prospects. NAPW stands for the success of its members and the community. Any requests to join or inquire about membership, or businesses interested in hosting or speaking at an event, may contact Marsha Feldman at aventuranapw@gmail.com.

leadership, career and civic opportunities. Since 2008, it expanded that mission to include more facets of youth development and continues to be part of a new and exciting movement. The SHAPE clubs have received a positive and enthusiastic response from school administrators, School Boards, government and community leaders including Florida Governor Rick Scott and former Florida Governors Charlie Crist and Jeb Bush. Dr. Michael M. Krop High School is just one of the nine schools in Miami-Dade that utilizes the powerful program. Through the SHAPE club those students have participated in holiday food and toy collection drives for organizations such as the Children’s Diagnostic Center among many others. “I have acquired several skills from being involved in SHAPE including a sense of leadership, responsibility and communication,” says student Sara Napolitano. “It’s amazing how much you can learn from one organization.” “SHAPE, to me, is a chance to help the body of humanity,” adds student Francisco Gonzalez. “We are all parts of a whole. I feel this club allows me to do my part, help out those in need and carry out acts of selflessness in order to make the world a better place for all of us.” To date, three school districts with almost 11,000 high school students have donated over 260,000 community service hours, have raised over $48,000 for a variety of causes, have made over 300 site visits to non-profits, have donated over $77,000 to high school programs and have completed almost $2 million of volunteer labor. This incredible impact on the community proves that everyone can make a difference in the world.

veryone knows it’s important to take care of the body and mind. However, one also needs to take care of the spirit. The Aventura-based Mark J. Gordon Foundation did just this by creating SHAPE (Students Helping Achieve Philanthropic Excellence) in 2002 to empower high school students to change the world. The program was first introduced in four South Florida high schools, and in October, 2003, SHAPE, Inc. became an independent 501 © (3) charity and began its expansion in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Today, SHAPE successfully operates in seventeen schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, with teachers and students reporting affirmative results. It Was Prom SZN and MAR-JCC Celebrated Their “King” – President & CEO Gary J. Bomzer Honored at Dinner By Beverly Perkins

T

here’s no better way to wrap up a school year than with a big celebration. Although, the Michael- Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is always open with classes, camp and activities, their recent Tribute Dinner was a perfect culmination of gratitude, love and respect. Last month President and CEO Gary J. Bomzer, MSW was recognized for his devotion, leadership and service to the MAR-JCC and the Miami-Dade Jewish community. For the past 22 years Bomzer has played a crucial role in the growth, development and success of the Center. The MAR-JCC/Sanford L. Ziff Campus is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life and fosters spiritual, emotional and physical development of its individual members through all life’s stages and circumstances. Chairman of the Board, Paul Kruss, Immediate Past Chairman & Chairman, Advisory Board, Ariel Bentata, and Board of Directors Member and Past Chairman, Jeffrey Scheck were also recognized for their pivotal and integral performances and continued achievements at the facility. In addition to honoring these outstanding individuals, the purpose of the event was to also celebrate the love everyone shares for the “J”. The theme of the evening was “Prom Night”.

The gymnasium was transformed similar to a movie set with a pink, gold and black color scheme. Guests came decked out in their finest promlike attire and enjoyed an evening of dinner, dancing and fun. A raffle to raise funds for the center included items such as two airline tickets to South America, a Tourneau Time Piece, a high-end package of beauty supplies and a Resin 3-D Sculpture of “The Simpsons”. This particular item was Number 3 in a series of 365 and signed by the show’s creator, Matt Groenig. Speeches were given and awards were presented, and the new incoming Chairman of the Board, Fanny Hanono, presented Gary J. Bomzer with a special award. The night was made possible by the event committee Event Co-Chairs Angela Birdman, Fanny Hanono, Denise Tamir and Event Planners Daphna Bentata, Renee Bomzer, Claudia Feldenkrais, Lia Fischer-Brod, Mindy Hardoor and Adrienne Scheck. The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is located at 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach, 33180. For information, please call (305) 932-4200 or visit www.marjcc.org.

Counting the Ways to Thank the NMB Public Works Department By Beverly Perkins

A

clever and informative poster campaign canvased the City of North Miami Beach during National Public Works Week in May. The theme “And You Thought You Knew Public Works” allowed residents a different perspective to what NMB city workers do to keep the City maintained and looking good. The series of seven different posters with recognizable locations photographed gave informational messages and were displayed at various public facilities. Facts were stated in each message educating the public to what exactly the Public Works Department does on a daily basis. They are as follows: ▸▸ 287 street containers and 24 miles of roads & medians, parks and canals are litter-picked ▸▸ 12.3 miles of medians maintained ▸▸ 106,500 feet of irrigation pipes ▸▸ 300 preventative maintenance inspections and 290 road calls ▸▸ 2,809 catch basins and 119.99 miles of roadways ▸▸ 292,000 sq. feet of buildings, 55 roof systems, 800 tons of air conditioning ▸▸ 644 years of combined government experience The dedicated week of gratitude for these hard-working individuals culminated with the first annual Public Works Department Employee Recognition Program. This program honored outstanding employees in three categories: Manager of the Year, Foreman of the Year and Non-supervisory Employee of the Year. Winners were presented a certificate at the City Council meeting. The main event to celebrate the employees was a BBQ cook-off and picnic hosted by The Public Works Department, in conjunction with NMBwater, the city’s public utilities department, at Oleta River State Park on Thursday, May 19th. The fully catered picnic was open to all city employees. A portion of the North Miami Beach Police Department’s Running Man Challenge was also filmed during the event.

Four teams competed in the cook-off, with trophies awarded in two categories: Chicken and Ribs. Judges were City Manager Ana M. Garcia, Councilwoman Barbara Kramer, Councilman Frantz Pierre and Councilwoman Phillis S. Smith. “The cook-off and picnic was a fantastic team-building event for our staff,” said City Manager Ana M. Scott added, “public works is relevant to everyone, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Seaside Village – It’s More than Luxurious Residences, It’s a Lifestyle feature story

By Beverly Perkins

S

easide Village is a boutique development located on the Intracoastal along AIA on Hollywood’s beautiful north beach. It features luxury condominium units and single family homes. Residents will also enjoy a waterfront pool and lounge and a private marina. Seaside Village will offer a unique beach lifestyle with easy access to all of the fun and excitement that South Florida has to offer. Construction of this unique community is now underway. Roger Lohse, with Keller Williams Realty Professionals, is the listing agent for the development and took the time to answer some questions about the new property.

What kind of residences are available? We

will have a total of 23 residences…15 luxury condominium units and 8 single family homes.

Who are the developers? One of the part-

ners, Malcolm Resnick, has been building homes in South Florida for 25 years. He helped launch Heron Bay in Parkland and more recently he built the White Sands, a cluster of luxury homes just a few blocks down the street from Seaside Village. Resnick lives in Hollywood and points out, “This is the last waterfront community to be built on north Hollywood Beach. Not only does it feature a marina, but it’s literally 600 feet away from the ocean.” The other partner, John Passalacqua, is the president of the North Beach Civic Association and has lived on the barrier island for 31 years. He says, “This is a unique development in that the builders live in the community and are delivering a product that will enhance the quaint setting that makes north Hollywood Beach so special.” Chuck Keller, the third partner, is a Florida State licensed General Contractor, with over 30 years of experience in the South Florida area.

What makes Seaside Village unique? At

a time when condo developers keep outdoing each other with the size and opulence of their buildings, the developers here decided that bigger isn’t necessarily better. They thought the project would be more successful if it contributed to the ‘village-feel’ that north beach residents enjoy.

How can the density be so low when this is prime South Florida Real estate? The

property was purchased out of foreclosure for roughly $3 million about 3 years ago. It took a lot of work but it turned out to be a great deal. That inexpensive land cost afforded the developers the ability the keep the density low.

What are the prices of the luxury residences at Seaside Village? Our three

bedroom, three bath condo units range from $1.1m-$1.4m. We have three penthouses priced at $2.2m. The single family homes, which feature 4000 square feet under air, a rooftop terrace, spa, elevators, and a two car garage, start at $1.875m. Price per square foot, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better deal for waterfront new construction in South Florida.

Tell us about the marina. Our marina has

a total of 11 slips available as an additional purchase. Two of them can accommodate a 55 foot vessel, the other nine are designed to hold a 45 foot boat.

What is the long term vision of the area?

It’s pretty impressive! Brick streets, buried power lines, pedestrian walkways and dune overpasses for beach access are all in the long term plans. There are still a lot of hoops to jump through but Seaside Village will be a major component of the future of this area.

Doesn’t this property have some historical significance in south Broward County? Yes, it’s

worth noting that this development is being built on the same property where Martha’s Restaurant used to be. Long time South Florida residents certainly remember that place. The property also has an infamous link to some pretty high profile stories in Broward. This is the spot where Miami Subs founder Gus Boulis parked his gambling boats for all those years.

When is construction due to be completed? The condominiums are scheduled

to be finished during the first quarter of 2017 and the single family homes in the summer of 2017.

When is the sales center open? The sales center, located at 6024 N. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL. 33019, is open every day from 10am-5pm.

What is your contact information? We can be reached at 954-261-2727.

What is your website? Our website is www. SeasideVillageNorthBeach.com.

Oh Baby, the Places They’ll Go! Hochberg Preparatory Pre-K Class of 2016 Graduates! school news

By Beverly Perkins

H

ochberg Preparatory School is a Jewish Prep School for children as early as 6 weeks old through the 8th grade. Since the 1980’s the accredited educational facility has a strong emphasis on STEM learning, Judaics, Jewish culture and tradition. However, one annual tradition is the Pre-K graduation ceremony. The much anticipated, although emotional, event marked the end of pre-school days as these children became rising kindergartners. The Hochberg Prep Early Childhood Academy Class of 2016 consisted of sixty-five four and five year olds. During the milestone moment, they performed original lyrics titled “Say Goodbye to Pre-School, Say Goodbye to Jr. K” to legendary songwriter Billy Joel’s music. Many of the graduates began their journey at Hochberg Prep as infants and toddlers during Mommy & Me or Music Together classes. Others were part of the full-time infant program where they gained social skills and early learning experiences in the state-of-the-art Shelley Family Infant Toddler Center which prepared them for the Pre-K age appropriate curriculums. Each year the graduation ceremony is unique and special to those graduates. It starts with a theme and follows with original songs, dances and music all relevant to what is famil-

iar and important to the children at that time. This year’s theme, “The Superhero Inside of Me” developed from the interest of the multitude of super hero movies and such. The premise allows the young students to know that they are all super heroes amongst us. They learned that super heroes start at the school with the teachers, administrators, staff, rabbis, individuals in the community as well as those in Jewish history. The team of music, dance and production specialists created four songs and three dances of which all sixty-five graduating students performed on their big day. Hochberg Prep families, Early Childhood staff and administration, synagogue leadership and board members and clergy were present to watch these tiny people walk across the stage in their red caps and gowns to receive their first diploma of many. “As the school year closes, I send my heartfelt congratulations to our graduates and their families,” says Early Childhood Director Anne Mandelbaum. “I know that my teachers and I have prepared these children by teaching them the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond, and that the children leave us with a love of learning and a love of school.”

Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School Robotics Team Compete in National Competition By Beverly Perkins

T

he Dr. Michael M. Krop Robotics team participated for the second year in The Mini-Urban Challenge (MUC). The competition challenges high school students to design and program a robotic vehicle that can autonomously navigate a mini-urban city using a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 kit. The event is sponsored by Doolittle Institute (DI), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Special Operations Command (SOCOM). This team of enthusiastic teens consisted of Stephanie Morton, Aaron Kredi, Uri Ostrowicz and Benjamin Manley with Mini Urban Program Manager, Sally Sage Hills at the helm and Patrick Manley as their mentor. MUC competitions are conducted in five regions of the United States: Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and the Washington, D.C. area. In 2016, more than 350 students representing 65 teams participated in the challenge, gaining engineering experience in collaboration, problem solving and team building. The first stop for the Krop team was the regional competition in Washington, DC where their team, “Frontal Robotomy”, won first prize and an invitation to move on to Nationals. The national competition was held in May at the Tampa Convention Center. The 2016 emphasis was to encourage teams to use dynamic pathfind-

ing algorithms to guide their vehicles through the mini-urban city. “There are many benefits when students participate in activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM),” says Doolittle Institute Mini-Urban Challenge Program Manager, Sally Sage Hills. “In the not too distant future, we are going to see autonomous vehicles navigating through cities and on highways. By exposing high school students to our autonomous robotics requirement, we are preparing them for the research they will need to do in college and beyond when they move out into government or industry.” The winning team is of course chosen based on the highest total score. In addition to the actual challenge where the teams’ robot enters a miniurban city from a home base, travels through the city to assigned parking lots, parks in assigned parking spaces, exits the city and returns home, the team also needs to give a 15 minute oral technical presentation and turn in an engineering design notebook. This year eleven of the top teams made it to Nationals, and these talented 10th and 11th grade Dr. Michael M. Krop students struck lightening again when they took home 4th place overall in the Nation.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! It Was Fun to Run at Jacobson Sinai Academy By Beverly Perkins

J

SECTION News School HEAD

acobson Sinai students experienced their first annual Boosterthon Fun Run at the close of the 2015-2016 school year. America’s top schools have been utilizing the Boosterthon Fun Run as a preferred fundraising choice. In addition to raising much needed funds for classrooms across the nation, the program joins fitness, leadership and character all together to create an experience for each individual school’s campus. Students learn that fitness is fun as Boosterthon team members illustrate values such as integrity, honesty and compassion in creative and fun ways during the nine day program. Character building games, sports activities and pep rallies got the entire school ready for the big event. Jacobson students starting as young as PK3 all the way through 8th grade enjoyed the process as they learned leadership skills while competing in the JSA Recess Fun Run. Students were celebrated and cheered on by their families, teachers and peers while raising funds through different pledges. The older students in 5th-8th grades enjoyed the additional amusement of a Color Run added to their Fun Run. Fundraising goals included campus enhancements after recent tornadoes devastated areas of the JSA grounds. Students raised an incredible amount of $18,232. However, in addition to these funds raised for the school, the Boosterthon Fun Run team hosts a giveback initiative to invite schools to help change the world.

The 2015-16 giveback is The Great Shoe Takeoff! Sadly, many people around the world do not have shoes. Shoes are another necessity for daily living as they not only provide comfort and stability, they open the doors to education and jobs. For every $30 per lap a class reaches during the Fun Run program, a pair of shoes is sent to another country for those in need. This year’s goal is to send 60,000 pairs of shoes. Jacobson Sinai Academy proves that team effort really can change the world when everyone works together to achieve a united goal.

he 20th Annual Fins Weekend hosted by The Miami Dolphins Foundation was a success as they not only reeled in some fish, but some large funds to support education in the community. Anchored by the educational foundation, proceeds from the event weekend, will benefit City Year Miami. This education-focused nonprofit organization partners with public schools to help keep students on track to graduate. Miami Norland Senior High and Miami Carol City High Schools are the lucky recipients of this impactful program for two years now. “The Miami Dolphins Foundation is proud to raise awareness and deliver much needed resources that directly benefit education and change lives in our community,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “Our partnership with City Year Miami invests in a younger generation to ensure they have the opportunity to recognize its potential, all the while hosting an event that creates lasting memories with our players, coaches, alumni, partners and community.” The festivities began early Friday morning with a sold-out golf tournament at Crandon Golf in Key Biscayne. Thirty-six foursomes had the opportunity to golf

with a Miami Dolphins current or former player. They then went on to enjoy an Awards & Luncheon presented by Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. Later, participants took part in the Hook & Tackle Captain’s Party presented by South Florida Ford at the Miami Beach Marina at the Miami Beach Marina. Saturday morning, a total of 50 boats participated in the Fins Weekend Fishing Tournament, where Never Done (Dany Ayo, Marcus Bach-Armas, Jason Robinson and junior angler J.J. Rodriguez) took home first prize with an overall combined weight of 117.7 pounds (3 kingfish & 2 tuna). The quartet won a spot on the team charter on a Miami Dolphins away trip. The tournament was followed by the weigh-in presented by Hooters South Florida and Fishing Awards Ceremony and Live Auction presented by Seaboard Marine. “For two decades, Fins Weekend has been a staple in South Florida, bringing together players, coaches, cheerleaders and the community to benefit a greater cause,” Fins Weekend Committee Chair Jeff Peck said. “We look forward to many more decades of making a true impact in education that stays right here in South Florida.”

Carvalho noted the great progress made in the school system by saying, “For the past four years, Miami Dade’s graduation rate has exceeded the states. In fact, we’ve exceeded the graduation rate of every single large urban center across America.” He further went on to say, “Young people are the future of our state and our nation. The greatest of all great things happen when we invest in kids. There’s an opportunity to reinvent ourselves into better versions of us with each generation.” “This meeting is perhaps the favorite one of AMC members,” says President of The Aventura Marketing Council, Elaine Adler. “The students display incredible poise and maturity as each one took their turn at the podium, handling all the responsibilities that are normally handled by the AMC’s Board members and committee chairs.” Supt. Carvalho concluded his speech with encouragement and praise as he stated, “You, the good people of our community, believe that tomorrow shall be and must be better because of what you do today. I truly believe regardless of challenge or difficulty, anyone’s impossible can become everyone’s inevitable boundless success. For any child, the sky is the limit!” Local Mayors and Commissioners, Miami-Dade School Board members, administrators and principals joined the hundreds of business leaders who gave the students a standing ovation for their extremely professional presentations.
