Local Girl Scout Troop Finds the Purr-fect Solution for Shelter Cats By Beverly Perkins
W
hen one mentions girl scouts, one typically thinks of cookies. The nationally known annual sale actually helps fund new adventures and life-changing opportunities for young girls. The cookies may be delicious, but the girls selling them are also extremely sweet. Local Girl Scout Troop 800 currently consists of approximately 16 girls who are students at the St. Rose of Lima School in Miami Shores. For the past six years, these girls have grown together. Many began their Girl Scout career as Daisies in kindergarten.
They then moved up the ranks to Brownies (2nd and 3rd grades), then Juniors (4th and 5th grades), and now entering middle school as Cadettes (6th, 7th and 8th grades). The Troop does multiple fundraisers throughout the year in addition to the iconic sale. However, a couple years ago they held a bake sale at their church raising $350. The girls unanimously decided that they wanted to use the funds raised to help animals. Although, they can choose what to do with the money, troops are not able to donate money. Troops
must donate goods. This ambitious group chose to work with The Humane Society of Greater Miami. They did a bit of research and found out that the shelter cats and kittens were in need of some exercise toys. The girls found the purr-fect solution – an exercise wheel. Unfortunately, this cat treadmill was quite costly. Indoor pets need exercise to stay happy and healthy, and the determined troop found an affordable one if they assembled it themselves. These rising 6th graders ordered, delivered and constructed the aircraft like structure for the frisky felines at the North Miami shelter this past June. Fortunately, they had money left over and were able to purchase a variety of Nylabones for the canines. This donation became a hands-on community project and something they are proud of as they watched, played and had fun with the appreciative pets. “We had the funds for this donation in our account for some time, so it was exciting to finally give these donations to the animal shelter,” said Troop Leader Pearl Perez. “The visit brought both smiles and tears. Smiles because they all loved interacting with the animals, as well as tears to see how many animals are in need of a home.” To become a Girl Scout or to find a troop in your local community contact the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida at 305253-4841 or visit www.girlscoutsfl.org.

Sterling Aventura’s Residents Worked the Runway to Raise Funds for the Alzheimer’s Association®
A
merican actor, drag queen, model, recording artist, author and television personality RuPaul achieved international fame as a drag queen with the hit song “Supermodel (You Better Work)”. Not only does this talented individual continue to raise money for charities, Aventura’s very own seniors from The Sterling Aventura “worked it” at their first annual fashion show to raise funds for their cause. This group’s cause is the Alzheimer’s Association®. Held annually on the summer solstice, “The Longest Day” nationwide event raises funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association®.
The duration of the sunrise to sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Teams are encouraged to honor someone facing the disease by creating and participating in an activity they love. Upon registration they are asked to raise a minimum of $1,600 to further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Sterling Aventura Team chose to hold several events throughout the month of June to bring attention to the cause. The area’s finest memory care and assisted living facility enjoyed a BBQ followed by a Staff Jeans Day and finally a summer fashion show.
Resident “models”, including the staff, provided their own clothes and did their own make up before walking the catwalk to the sounds of classic oldies from the 1950’s. Staff members from management, dining service and rehabilitation participated. There was a large show of support for the worthwhile cause as the entire community was also able to be involved. Miriam Masia, Resident Programs Director and Daniel Dhanaram, Program Coordinator were thrilled with the program’s success and were happy to be able to donate all the proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association on behalf of Team Sterling. “It was wonderful to see our residents feeling so obviously proud and happy as they walked the runway”, said Masia. “Often times, the elderly can feel invisible in our society but today here at The Sterling, they took center stage!” Dhanaram followed by saying, “We even had several men walk the runway, with colorful summer fashions.” Although The Sterling has daily entertainment and special events throughout the month, this was the first time for a fashion show and one to be repeated.

Mayor George Vallejo Delivers the 2016 North Miami Beach State of the City Address By Beverly Perkins
Mayor Vallejo with City Manager Ana Garcia
M
ayor George Vallejo and the members of the North Miami Beach City Council hosted the 2016 State of the City address on Wednesday, June 22nd at the Julius Littman Performing Arts Theater. The event, which was sponsored by FPL, iPic Theaters and Waste Management, had more than 150 attendees, including civic partners who serve on City boards, commissions and committees, elected officials, and others whose involvement is invaluable to the North Miami Beach community. In his address, Mayor Vallejo focused on a theme of positive transformation, outlining accomplishments from the past two years and opportunities in the years ahead that will continue to transform the landscape of North Miami Beach. Mayor Vallejo explained that every corner of the City was experiencing a renaissance built on four pillars: (1) “Fiscally Stable Government,” (2) “Cleaner & More Beautiful”, (3) “A Safer City” and (4) “Government Done Right.” He elaborated on the significant accomplishments the City achieved thanks to the help of his Council colleagues and the current City administration led by City Manager, Ana M. Garcia. The Mayor and City Council created a clear path for the City by unanimously adopting the City’s Strategic Plan. The plan that includes the North Miami Beach Vision and Mission Statements. The policy agenda that helps the City operate under an open and transparent means to achieve and set goals. Throughout the rest of the evening, the Mayor continued to praise the City’s outstanding and professional staff for following the North Miami Beach R.I.S.E. (Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence) Standards. The standard that infuses every single one of the NMB employees. Mayor Vallejo celebrated the major accomplishments of the year, including the modernization of the City’s Zoning Code that was unanimously adopted by the City Council. He applauded the arrival of over a dozen new developments across North Miami Beach, some which led the City to rank the highest in property value improvement with an average property value improvement of 16.5% over

the past year. The Mayor praised the reduction of the City’s carbon footprint by being serviced by a CNG fleet in Recycling, Residential Garbage, and bulk trash. The Mayor congratulated the City for creating Master Plans for both the Parks & R.E.C. and N.M.B. Water Departments, and the North Miami Beach Police Department for being fully-staffed for the first time in 10 years. Continuing the celebration, the Mayor praised the rest of the accomplishments as the City successfully negotiated and approved a 3 year police contract allowing them to retain and recruit the very best law enforcement officers; updated an aging fleet for Code, Police, Parks and Utilities; completely overhauled the SR826 (163rd Street) corridor; installed an award-winning gateway feature East of Biscayne; tripled beautification and landscape efforts with the establishment of the Neighborhood Maintenance Beautification Team; completed a transit study, doubled the hours of weekly service, increased ridership by 41% and designed and purchased a state of the art trollies; upgraded the building process and provided same day inspection and permitting that led to successful grand openings such as iPic Theaters, Marina Palms, and Aldi; broke ground at the former Hazel Fazzino Nursery

which will soon be transformed into a 1.25 acre park for their community; and completed traffic calming projects at both Uleta and Government Center, the latter of which received the Neat Streets award by Miami-Dade County. All this was accomplished in a financially sound, and fiscally responsible climate. “We have accomplished a lot, and this was because our vision, mission and goals are welldefined, have been clearly-communicated and have become the consensus goals for our entire administration,” said Vallejo. “North Miami Beach will continue to offer better housing choices, better businesses, better parks, better policing and better public works for all of its residents.” He concluded the address reminding attendees that the upcoming year will be even more significant for the City because it begins with its 90th Birthday Celebration on October 1, 2016. This is also a sign of self-sabotage or what is known as CONSCIOUS/ SUBCONSCIOUS CONFLICT. Hypnotherapy is one of the fastest ways to resolve this conflict. NMBPD Awarded “Excelsior” Status community news
By Beverly Perkins
T
he North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) has had a longtime commitment to professional accreditation since 1991, when the NMBPD was first accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., also referred to as CALEA, for its law enforcement operations. The NMBPD was the first agency in Miami-Dade County to achieve this award and has since maintained professional excellence through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc., (CFA). Generally, an agency must comply with all applicable, mandatory standards in order to earn accreditation. In April 2016, the CFA assessment team conducted independent, intensive and thorough inspections of the NMBPD operations. The CFA assessors were provided with complete, unlimited access to review written documentation, conduct personnel interviews, observe agency operations and training practices, and conduct facility inspections to ensure the NMBPD’s compliance with all accreditation standards. The agency was reviewed for its 7th reaccreditation assessment, where this process was for the honorary distinction of “EXCELSIOR” recognition, which is defined below as: ▸▸ Commitment to Accreditation – Candidate agencies shall have been awarded five (5) successful reaccreditation cycles by the Commission; and ▸▸ Excellence in Accreditation – A candidate agency’s reaccreditation interval shall only be credited toward this new recognition status, if conditions were not assessed by the Commission. “Excelsior” is a Latin adjective defined as “higher” or “loftier”, and is used in the English language as an interjection with a poetic meaning of “ever upward.” On June 22, 2016, the CFA held a conference in Orlando, Florida, to review several criminal justice agencies for initial accreditation, reaccreditation, and/or Excelsior status. The NMBPD was awarded “Excelsior” status by the CFA, making it the first law enforcement agency in Miami-Dade County to achieve this prestigious award. It takes approximately 17 years to achieve this recognition and the NMBPD has had the opportunity to achieve this award in 2013 and again in 2016.
Today, the Excelsior Recognition Program recognizes some of the finest criminal justice agencies in the State of Florida, and demonstrates a level of commitment to the Florida accreditation process, unparalleled in the criminal justice profession. With the continued hard work and commitment involved in the accreditation process, the NMBPD is proud to be recognized as one of those agencies. Above The Bar – MAR-JCC Gymnastics Program Has High Standards By Beverly Perkins
S
tudents on the MAR-JCC gymnastics team are flipping over the incredible program offered at this member club. Despite not having the most optimal training facilities, the Gymnastics Team Program has progressed and developed into one of the leading gymnastics programs in the Aventura area. The coaching staff are all USAG safety certified and have a wealth of experience working with athletes ranging from state to international levels. In addition, they currently have three judges on staff. Two are in the national and level 8 rated women’s program. The third is a judge in the USAG men’s program and holds an international rating. The MAR-JCC Gymnastics Program aims to develop and promote confidence and self-esteem through their exceptional classes taught by elite trainers, coaches and educators. The program rivals those in which athletes are preparing for the Olympics. A majority of athletes go on to be on the team program after completing the developmental/recreational program.
“It’s amazing to see the rapid growth of our team program. Most gymnastics centers do not have the ratio of team to recreational as the MAR-JCC,” says Marci Kaplan, Gymnastics Director. “The competitive program has a 45-member team/pre-team with the entire program hosting approximately 140-150 participants. This speaks volumes of the high caliber and exceptional quality of coaching to produce that number of team athletes in such a short period of time, and the range of levels we have developed from the beginning.” Kaplan has been involved in the sport of Gymnastics as a gymnast and as a career professional. Her tenure in gymnastics has spanned over 28 years in the following areas; judge-USA Gymnastics National rating, head coach, gym owner, safety certifier, and Meet (event) Director. During her coaching history she has coached State, Regional and National athletes. Gymnasts of all ages, starting at 3 years old through age of 18, will reach their potential and beyond through positive physical and mental development in a safe, rewarding environment. Kindergym classes (ages 3-5), Developmental/Recreational (ages 5+) and Competitive Travel (ages 5+) with current levels 1-8 are available. All classes strictly follow the guidelines of the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic age group program. Fall classes begin the week of August 29th. To register for classes contact the Membership Services Office at 305-932-4200 ext. 145 or 146. For team/pre-team tryout information, please contact Marci Kaplan, Director of Gymnastics or Jordan Bradley, Assistant Director/Team and Recreational Program at (305) 932-4200 Ext. 193 or visit www. marjcc.org.

By North Miami Beach Chief of Police William “Bill” Hernandez, MSM
O
ne of the most common assumptions about crime prevention is that it is restricted solely to the province of police and the justice system. The North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) Crime Prevention Unit has devised ways and means that run counter to this view by bringing residents into the crime prevention process through PACT meetings. One of the core tenets of the PACT concept is to break free from the traditional stance of “apart from the community” to a more inclusive philosophy of being “a part of the community” in identifying and responding to problems that contribute to the likelihood of criminal behavior within the City of North Miami Beach. Over the past several months, the NMBPD Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) has embarked upon a wide range of interventions that, first, allowed the CPU to investigate the causes and potential solutions to recent crime trends. For instance, the CPU has conducted four (4) zone improvement activities consisting of a series of inspections through which we assessed the physical conditions of specific areas, and identified situational or environmental factors associated with certain types of crime. After conducting changes based on the safety and security of the assessment, a report of the findings is made with recommendations to correct deficiencies.

In addition, these interventions allow the CPU to encourage residents to identify crime and anti-social behavior issues they feel is important to dissect, debate and discuss with the CPU officers in terms of their potential contribution to community safety and vitality. There have been more than 15 public appearances and public service announcements by the CPU supervisor pertaining to crime prevention and community safety. The aforementioned issues are real concerns for both the NMBPD and the residents of the City of North Miami Beach. From a sustainable crime prevention standpoint, the CPU will continue to dedicate its efforts in maintaining community safety and vitality through a range of measures that highlight the importance of targeting very specific forms of crime and eradicating the so-called “magnets” of crime. Based on the insight gained from the ongoing interaction with the concerned residents, the CPU has been able to take appropriate action to serve the victim(s) of the City of North Miami Beach. The NMBPD may not be able to solve every single safety problem that arises, yet with PACT, we dare say that we are capable of taking small collective steps towards improving the quality of life of the North Miami Beach residents. Overall, PACT is a venue that enables the CPU to improve response protocols by looking carefully at specific target populations and inquiring feedback from the victim(s). Teen Court Celebrates 18th Anniversary with Aventura Marketing Council

T
he Aventura Marketing Council (AMC) / World-Class Chamber of Commerce is known far and wide for its outreach to the educational community, consistently building bridges of understanding for the past 28 years. Programs range from working with at-risk students and providing sailing programs for disabled students to offering job mentorships and job offers to students from their ten Dade Partner schools. The most recent project for the AMC was introducing Miami-Dade County’s TEEN COURT to their members springing from the vision of 17 year-old Tomas Korn, a senior at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, a dedicated TEEN COURT volunteer. As the County’s only peer-sanctioning program, TEEN COURT is an alternative sanctioning program for first-time misdemeanor youthful offenders who agree to allow their peers instead of the juvenile justice system determine their sentencing. Through their participation, the program helps decrease juvenile delinquency by interrupting the beginning stages of criminal behavior. The program has provided youth, volunteers and participants an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in a non-traditional judicial process. First-time juvenile misdemeanor offenders are afforded a sentencing hearing conducted by youth volunteers serving as attorneys, jurors, bailiffs and clerks. Some offenses include petit theft, possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct and trespassing. An adult volunteer, usually an active judge or lawyer, presides as judge over the hearing and a jury of the participant’s peers determines appropriate sanctions. Once the participants successfully complete

program sanctions, they are given the opportunity to have their records expunged, meaning there will be no public record of the offense, thereby providing youth with a second chance. This program reduces recidivism, offers relief to the local juvenile justice system, develops a cadre of responsible and knowledgeable citizens, and encourages collaborative partnerships between youth and the local police departments. At a recent TEEN COURT at the North Dade Justice Center, Tomas Korn, and other high school volunteers were proud to invite the Aventura Marketing Council members to see a TEEN COURT in session. Judges from the North Dade Justice Center, including Associate Admin. Judge Linda Singer Stein, Judge Myriam Lehr, Judge Diana Vizcaino, Judge Jason Dimitris, Judge Betty Capote and Judge Jason Bloch from Miami-Dade County Circuit Court mingled with the business leaders and students from Miami’s National Urban Debate League during the reception preceding TEEN COURT. For more information, call the Aventura Marketing Council/World – Class Chamber of Commerce at 305-932-5334 or visit www.miamidade.gov/economicadvocacytrust/teen-court.asp.

Weight Loss: The Big Picture ask the expert
pet of the month
BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED SURGEON
“Tony” Tony Stark is a three year old Maltese. He’s the little angel baby to his favorite person, his human mom, Valdisia. Just like any other three year old, Tony loves snacks. He especially likes when his favorite human runs after him to take his special treat. He likes riding in the car with the wind blowing in his face and dislikes being alone. His favorite thing to do is to antagonize other dogs and run away from them. He was last seen walking at an Aventura marina with his best friend and idol, a Morky named Prince.
W
eight loss is an extremely broad subject. Almost everyone is trying to lose weight or keep it off. Americans, and the rest of the world, spend billions of dollars trying to gain control of their weight, unsuccessfully! “Why” you ask. The answer is there are so many factors that can affect how the human body consumes food and stores energy - the combinations are unfathomable. The sheer amount of time, money, and energy spent on diets, medications, and surgeries without a true answer proves that “nothing” works. But the truth isn’t that nothing works, it’s that not one single thing works for every single person. The key to successful weight control is to identify what causes your weight gain and retention, and to take the necessary steps to get your body, and your life, under control. Weight gain can be caused by a multitude of factors. For some people, a hormonal imbalance brought on by unhealthy eating habits is the cause of weight gain/retention. This imbalance can escalate to the body’s lack of sensitivity to important digesting hormones, such as insulin, which in turn can result in a multitude of complications such as excess storage of fat or diabetes. For other people, weight gain/retention can be a hereditary challenge in which their body and their brain are not on the same page. And still for others, the challenge lies in not being motivated or supported by others to maintain or lose weight. Given this information, we begin to understand the multitude of factors that can combine in many ways, resulting in a unique weight loss challenge for each individual.

While there isn’t an absolute truth or universal rule-of-thumb to weight loss, there are still solutions! Weight loss is like a puzzle. There are many different ways to begin a puzzle and to put a puzzle together. Every person, no matter how similar, may complete it differently and effectively reach the same end goal. While weight loss (and puzzles) can be difficult, neither is unattainable, though the method of approach can vary from person to person. Due to variables such as age, muscular component, ethnicity, gender, and many more, there is no cookie cutter approach of dieting that works for every single person. Sure, cutting out carbs and fats might generally work for many people to lose weight quickly, but maintenance for a diet like that will not come easy for most. While some may require surgical assistance, others may simply need a structured diet. The first and most important step in finding out which path is suitable for you and your future is to see a certified expert. This accredited and trusted expert will help you start putting the pieces of your weight loss puzzle together by giving you a strategic plan, coaching you through the frustrating and difficult times, providing advice and guidance, and ultimately supporting you every step of your journey so they can cheer you on as the last piece of your puzzle comes together.
