Franchise owners Ken and Clint Privett opened their first restaurant on Weston Road near State Road 84 back in 1999, followed by their shop at the other end of Weston Road just north of Griffin Road. Today, the partners own 17 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants throughout South Florida. One of the reasons Dunkin’ Donuts has been able to expand so rapidly is because of its popularity. Any time of the day or night you will see people popping in to enjoy a cup of its award-winning coffee, or picking up a package to brew at home. Globally, Dunkin’ Donuts sells 1.7 billion cups of coffee each year; that’s more than 30 cups every second. he City of Weston has embarked on a number of park improvement projects this year. Peace Mound Park is undergoing a massive renovation to address accessibility issues. Once completed in June, the park will feature a new ADA-compliant playground structure with swings, ADA compliant walkways, and additional parking spaces including a handicap space. In addition, the park will get two new shelters, LED walkway lighting, new deck material for the bridge and fishing dock, new park benches, and interpretive plaques to educate visitors. The renovations also call for more than 100 additional trees. Emerald Estates Park will also receive additional parking spaces and new sidewalks to meet ADA requirements. In addition, the tennis courts will be resurfaced and new outdoor fitness equipment installed before the project is completed in July, weather permitting. Other park improvements throughout the city address athletic interests. A new sand volleyball court was built at Eagle Point Park to meet this sport’s growing popularity. The football and lacrosse fields at Tequesta Trace Park received drainage upgrades. The basketball courts and Regional Park and the track at Tequesta Trace Park were resurfaced. Upcoming projects include installing artificial turf on the underused hockey courts at Regional Park to make them available for other sports.

housands of runners laced up their shoes to support the Rotary Club of Weston. Its annual Run For Tomorrow 5K and half marathon is the Rotary Club’s primary charity fundraiser. Weston Rotary estimates it netted $42,000 from this year’s event, which will benefit the club’s many charities and service projects. Proceeds from the Run For Tomorrow help fund projects such as Rotary International’s fight to end polio and help support local causes including Harvest Drive, LifeNet4Families, Sandy Nittinger Veterans Home, Children’s Harbor, Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, and many other agencies serving the community. The Weston Rotary is also a strong supporter of the health and well-being of Weston students. It gave $3,000 in prize money to the top three elementary schools in the Mayor’s Cup Challenge. That program encourages Weston children and their families to take the first step toward getting healthy by walking in the 1-Mile Family Health Walk, which follows the Run For Tomorrow 5K.

his year’s vote for Best Cultural Event actually goes to a series of events -- the Weston Foreign Film Series. The Arts Council of Greater Weston selected five fabulous films for its 8th annual Weston Foreign Film Series. This year’s lineup spanned the globe with genres ranging from romantic comedies to action adventure thrillers. All of the movies were recommended by foreign film expert Shelly Isaacs, who is the host, programmer and commentator for Café Cinematheque International. The 2013-2014 season started in November with the French film, My Afternoons with Margueritte, and concluded in March with the German and Hungarian film Gloomy Sunday. Other films featured were from Argentina, Belgium and the Netherlands. All foreign language films have English subtitles. Weston 8 Cinema plays host to the Weston Foreign Film Series. Movies are shown on the second Monday of the month. Tickets are nominally priced at $30 for the season or $7 for each individual film. It was the first healthcare facility in Broward County, and one of the first in the country, to install the Siemens Definition AS+ 128 Multi-Slice CT Scanner. This highly adaptive machine provides crisp, detailed images with minimal radiation exposure - a safer, more effective alternative to standard CT scanners. Broward Health Weston is committed to reducing radiation exposure, and supports the Image Gently and Image Wisely campaigns. Other diagnostic services include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, and Digital Mammograms. Working with the Broward Health Weston Women’s Center, the Diagnostic Imaging Center also offers breast MRI, digital ultrasound, digital mammography, digital bone densitometry, and diagnostic imaging. Because the Diagnostic Imaging Center offers many services performed with high-performance imaging equipment and highly-trained technicians, patients can expect a prompt turn-around time (within 24 hours) on most diagnostic reports. Walk-ins are welcome for routine exams and same-day appointments are available. For diagnostic procedures the center is open seven days a week with evening hours available.
