What A Great Time To Be Alive
A
ccording to the Centers for Disease Control, the life expectancy of an average American will soon be greater than 80 years. A century ago it was 50. Child mortality has never been lower. Today, almost everyone has access to virtually all of the world’s collective knowledge literally at their fingertips thanks to mobile phones. Our children live in a world where technologies they take for granted could not have been imagined just ten or 20 years ago. Technology has created a global world, and South Florida is a true melting pot. The blending of South American, European and traditional American cultures has created a truly unique place for us to raise our families and live in peace. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section of Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests. So go watch a show, attend a charity event, join a book club or even learn to dance. And, when you do, pinch yourself; for it truly is a great time to be alive! Sincerely,

Cooper City Promotes Intergenerational Fun community news
By Debby Teich
T
he City of Cooper City has several events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. On September 11, from 2pm to 4pm, Cooper City residents will celebrate their grandparents, and on September 30, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, moms and sons will gather for the Mother and Son Night of Fun.
Grandparents Day
On the same day that the nation celebrates Grandparents Day, Cooper City grandparents and their grandchildren will gather for their own special event at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebride Parkway. Since 2007, it has been a tradition for many Cooper City families. “It’s a great way for grandchildren to bond with their grandparents and create lasting memories,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist
for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. The cost is $4 per person. Either the grandparent or grandchild, age 4 and up, must be a Cooper City resident. Participants will enjoy fun, games, crafts, and snacks followed by an old fashioned ice cream party. Bring your bathing suits and spend time in the pool and game room after the event at no additional charge. Advanced tickets are required and available at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center or the Cooper City Community Center. Tickets will not be available the day of the event.
Mom/Son Night of Fun
Since 2002, Cooper City moms and their sons (ages K – 8th grade) have been gathering for the Mother and Son Night of Fun. This hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons to enjoy a special evening together. Many of them return year
after year. If mom is unavailable, grandmoms, stepmoms, and aunts are always welcomed. Participants can expect an action-packed, Super Hero night of fun that includes activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. They are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Super Duo; however, costumes are not required. “This event provides a unique opportunity for mother and son relationships to blossom,” said Trainor. “This special night includes food, dancing and crafts, as well as team building activities between the parents and children that are sure to leave a lasting impression.” Tickets for the Mother and Son Night of Fun are $24 per couple/$10 each additional son and must be purchased in advance at the Cooper City Community Center. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event is limited to Cooper City residents only. On November 19, from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Cooper City dads will have their turn at the Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance. The event, for ages 1st grade and up, includes dinner, dancing and themed entertainment. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. The event is limited to Cooper City residents. Tickets will be available on October 13. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

SI Davie Prepares for 22nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament By Debby Teich
M
embers of Soroptimist International of Davie have been busy preparing for the club’s main fundraiser of the year. On September 24, the club will hold the 22nd Annual Golfing fore Good Charity Golf Tournament at Hollybrook Country Club in Pembroke Pines. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the club’s projects and scholarships. “As vice president of the Davie School Foundation, I have witnessed firsthand what the Soroptimists do in our community,” said Mike Crowley, who plans to participate in the tournament. “Some people may not realize that without this club there would be no Old Davie School.” The registration fee of $150 includes greens fee for 18 holes of golf on the Hollybrook Country Club course, a cart and lunch. Registration begins at 8 am with a shotgun scramble at 9am. The event also includes an awards presentation, raffle and silent auction. Prizes for first, second, third and “most honest” players will be awarded. In addition, there will be awards for longest drive and closest to the pin for women and for men. For non-golfers, there are other opportunities available to support the cause through sponsorships, T-signs, advertising and donations. Since 1983, Soroptimist of Davie has grown in its mission to serve the community. Today, it supports a number of programs and community organizations within Davie and Broward County as well as assisting in the global outreach of Soroptimist International of the Americas and around the world. Approximately 40 members meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month, at noon, at Vienna Café in Davie. They participate in community service projects, as well as social events. The club always welcomes new members. “Joining Soroptimist International of Davie is a wonderful way to meet and make new friends, while working on charitable endeavors,” said Susan Coyle, who joined the club 17 years ago. “Our common goal is to make the community a better place.” Some of Soroptimist International of Davie projects and scholarships for women and girls in Western Broward include: Campaign to End Human

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 09/30/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Davie Residents Are Trained to Respond in a Disaster comminity news
by Debby Teich
H
urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Davie were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for public safety personnel to reach everyone in need. Members of Davie’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. The next CERT training class will be held on September 13 at the Davie Fire Administration building. CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT members use the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen the possibility of further damage to property. CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in the community. In order to qualify for Davie CERT, team members must be over 18 years old and live or work in the Town of Davie. The 8-week class meets at the Davie Fire Administration Building, located at 6901 Orange Drive. Classes include Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization, Disaster Simulation and more. There is no cost associated with the team. Stan Wyman lived in South Miami when hurricane Andrew hit. He wants to

NSU Southeastern University to Host “A Day for Children” community news
By Debby Teich
M
any children have never been seen by a physician and parents are often not aware of the services available for their kids. Since 2002, the A Day for Children event has been trying to change that. On September 18, from 11am to 5pm, at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library in Davie, over 150 venders, representing different disciplines of the University and service centers for children in Broward County, will be available to provide health care assessments for children and to answer questions families have about health-related issues and services. The health fair, as well as all services and food, are completely free and open to the public. Over 15,000 people are expected to attend. “The event has grown from a small festival to a huge event that provides
thousands of families with wholesome fun, information and access to all kinds of support and services,” said Ronnie Oller, chairperson, who started the event with her husband, Bob Oller, D.O., chief medical advisor at NSU’s Division of Clinical Operations. “There are so many programs and services that people do not know exist and I want to make sure that children get what they are entitled to.” Some of the many organizations that are participating include: Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Florida Kid Care, Broward 2-1-1, Florida Blue, Broward Health Children’s Hospital, BSO, HOPE Outreach Center, Boys & Girls Club of Broward County and more. In addition, faculty will be available from NSU University’s 22 clinical colleges and departments to answer health care questions from families and some will provide assessments. Everything at the event is free, but most of these services are available on a sliding scale basis throughout the year.
Some of the highlights of the event include: ▸▸ Health assessments for hearing and balance, vision, speech-language, dental health, medical and more. ▸▸ Nutrition education ▸▸ Social services and other resources to meet children’s behavioral needs ▸▸ Games, bounce house, storybook characters, and supervised activated ▸▸ Food under a tent ▸▸ Fingerprinting and identification cards from BSO and Crimestoppers ▸▸ Haircuts for children & family holiday portraits ▸▸ Entertainment Oller’s concern for the children of Broward County is very personal. Helping them is her mission and passion. “I was raised by my grandfather and grew up in very difficult circumstances,” said Oller. “I cannot bear the idea that any child might lack the essentials to reach their full potential. There are parents facing challenges without knowing where to turn for help. There are questions that need to be answered and people who need to be connected.” No registration is necessary. The library is located on NSU’s main campus, off of University Drive and SW 30th Ave. (take University Drive to SW 30th/Abe Fischler Blvd). Poster/Essay Contest Encourages Students to Place Smoke Alarms in Bedrooms By Debby Teich
A
ccording to National Fire Protection Association, half of all U.S. home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11pm and 7am, when people are most likely to be sleeping. Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half. This month, elementary school students throughout Davie will be learning about the importance of making sure smoke alarms are working, as they compete in the Town of Davie Fire Rescue/Fire Prevention Bureau’s 20th Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay/Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” “The purpose of our Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay/Poster Contest is to encourage our elementary school children throughout the Town of Davie to actively participate in National Fire Prevention Week activities,” said Bob Taylor, Fire Marshal for the Town of Davie. “They will also be learning about the importance of fire and life safety education in a fun, interactive and creative way.” All schools within the Town of Davie are encouraged to participate. Students in grades K-3 will create posters, while those in grades 4-5 will write essays. All of the work must reflect this year’s theme. By October 6, teachers from each school will select one winner from each grade level. On October 14, there will be an awards ceremony at Pine Island Multipurpose Center, where the students’ work will be on display. The winning entries

will receive trophies, backpacks, certificates, t-shirts, fire and life safety items, and fire safety information. “We are excited that this year is our 20th annual contest,” said Taylor. “It truly speaks to the successful commitment that our Mayor, Town Council, Town Administrator and Fire Chief have made in promoting fire and life safety with the youth in our community.” During the month of October, in observance of Fire Prevention Week, members of the Fire Prevention department will also be visiting schools to provide fire and safety and prevention demonstrations. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. For information on the Town of Davie’s Annual Essay & Poster Contest, call 954-797-1229.

Backpack Tips for Parents
I
t’s that time of year again – the annual search for school supplies. If a new backpack is on your list, here are some ideas to help find the right backpack for your child and help ensure that the backpack is being used correctly. Backpacks can be a great way for children and teenagers to take books and supplies to and from school. When used properly, backpacks may be better than purses, messenger or shoulder bags because the weight in the backpack is supported by the back and stomach muscles, which are the strongest muscles in the body. What to look for in a backpack First of all, remember that you should carry no more than 10 percent of your body weight in the backpack. That means an 80 pound child should have no more than 8 to 12 pounds of books and supplies in the pack. A bag with too much weight may force the child backward and to compensate, the child will lean forward at the hips or arch the back. This posture may compress the spine and may cause shoulder, back or neck pain. A good backpack will have two wide, padded straps and a waist strap. Although your child may want to sling the pack over one shoulder (which may be considered “cool”), you should have the child place both straps across the shoulders and wear the waist strap. This will help distribute the weight in the backpack more evenly. Other buying tips: ▸▸ Consider the size of the backpack to the size of the child. Younger, smaller children need smaller backpacks. ▸▸ Look for a lightweight pack with lots of compartments to help distribute the weight of books and supplies. ▸▸ Find a backpack with a padded back to increase comfort and keep sharp objects from poking through the fabric. ▸▸ Wheeled backpacks may help with heavy loads but some schools don’t allow them. Also, the wheels make it hard to get the backpack
up stairs and the design may not fit in a locker. Backpack Safety Tips So, you’ve looked at all the options and have selected the right backpack for your child. Let’s talk about some backpack safety measures you and your child can take. ▸▸ Make sure your child knows how to wear a backpack. He or she should use both shoulder straps. Check to be sure the straps are tight enough so that the backpack rests close to the body. Look at how the backpack rests on the back: It should be even in the middle of the back and not fall below the curve of your child’s lower back. ▸▸ As with any weight, proper lifting is essential to protecting the back. Teach your child to bend at the knees, grab the pack with both hands and then lift it to the shoulder. ▸▸ Backpacks can be a hazard to others. Encourage your child to look around before taking the backpack off and try to place it away from walkways so no one trips.
▸▸ Continue to look for signs that your child is carrying too much in a backpack, such as: ▸▸ Struggling to get the backpack on or off ▸▸ Leaning forward or hunching over while carrying the backpack ▸▸ Talking about back pain or numbness or weakness in the arms and legs How to Lighten the Load When your child first brings home the loaded back pack, you may be astonished at the number of materials and heavy books your child is carrying. Try to limit unnecessary items in the backpack such as laptops, cell phones and video games. Talk to your child’s school and see if paperback or CD-ROM versions of books are available. Some schools have started placing curriculum materials on the school’s website. Talk to your child about using a locker during the day for books and supplies instead of carrying everything throughout the day. Also, only materials needed for homework or studying should be brought home at night. If you notice that your child is bringing more materials home on Friday, check to see if he or she is putting off homework during the week. Good planning may save your child’s back! If your child continues to complain about physical symptoms of back or neck pain, you should consult a doctor. Emergencies are never planned but The Emergency Center in Davie offers complete, convenient emergency services that never closes.

Nowadays, PRP therapy is accessible, affordable and proven to help with more than just injuries. Known as liquid gold for its rejuvenating properties, PRP therapy is now used to slow down the aging process and rejuvenate the face, neck, and even breasts, which makes it a perfect alternative to surgery. It is also a treatment of choice for hair loss and thinning. And if you suffer from joint aches and pain, PRP can provide a safe solution, thus avoiding complications of a surgery or long cycles of medication. A study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found PRP injections resulted in significant improvement of pain, stiffness and physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) –a disease caused by cartilage loss in the joint. Although the study was small - with a sample size of 30 patients - a 76% decrease in pain was reported along with a 77% decrease in stiffness. Sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration, the study was the first to be specifically designed to measure the safety and efficacy of intra-articular PRP injections in the treatment of knee OA. What makes PRP therapy safe and efficient is that it utilizes the patient’s own cells to achieve the desired result. Only a blood sample is required, which is then placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the red blood cells and the plasma. The result is an increased concentration of platelets rich with growth factors that will allow the body to rebuild tissue and reduce inflammation. The substance is injected directly into the trouble areas. At our functional medicine practice, we first examine the patient thoroughly to find the root of the problem before starting any treatment. As with any other medical procedure, it is important that patients work with a qualified practitioner to ensure safety and effectiveness. The quality of equipment used to separate blood particles is of critical importance as different centrifuges will yield different mixes of platelets. With over 15 years of experience in the field of PRP therapy, Bellissimo is equipped with the latest and most precise technology available to ensure we extract the ideal concentration of platelets. In addition, our staff has been trained by the best in the industry - Dr. Charles Runels, known as the PRP guru and developer of innovative treatments, such as the Vampire Facelift and the O-shot. Whether you want to alleviate uncomfortable pain or simply look a couple years younger, know a proven solution to the problem is available.

Judges will evaluate the chili based on specific criteria that includes flavor, texture, aroma and overall presentation. There are awards for first, second and third place. Last year, Irene Solorzano won 1st place and Diane Smith came in 2nd place. Impact Broward’s RSVP/Veterans Helping Veterans Program utilizes older veterans to provide peer support to veterans having difficulty transitioning from combat to civilian life. It includes assistance in navigating the Broward County Veteran Treatment Court and the VA system, as well as a friend and ally through this challenging time. Veteran mentors are asked to commit at least one year to the betterment of a fellow veteran, during which they provide peer support through a variety of issues including PTSD and substance abuse. The mentoring program thrives on the premise that behind every successful person, there is one elementary truth: somewhere, somehow, someone cared about their growth and development. On September 10, area residents will have an opportunity to sample a variety of recipes at the 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Fundraiser Chili Cook-off. The event will be held at American Legion Post 321, 9081 SW 51st Street in Cooper City, from 12noon to 5pm. This effort first established the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. Local Hams Demonstrate Their Emergency Communication Skills by Debby Teich
I
n a real emergency or natural disaster, conventional power and communication grids almost always lose service, often for extended periods. Amateur radio operators (a.k.a. “hams”) fill this void by volunteering their time and equipment to operate from emergency sites and relay messages from the disaster area. The Davie/Cooper City Amateur Radio Club, along with the Broward Amateur Radio Club, recently hosted a Field Day. The public was invited to see local hams demonstrate their emergency communication skills, as they operated portable stations throughout Broward County. American Radio Relay League’s Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the U.S. More than 35,000 radio amateurs gathered at remote locations with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate their portable Field Day stations without using commercial electric power. The goal was to contact other amateur stations using only emergency power - batteries, solar cells or gas generators. There was also be plenty of visiting and picnicking, as well as demonstrations of various aspects of amateur radio, including “Get-On-The-Air” stations that allow the general public to make radio contacts around the world. Sanford Cowan has attended the event for the past three years. “Many hams and their clubs spend a good portion of the winter preparing for

the event,” said Cowan. “During Field Day, we test our ability to deploy communication in an effective manner and to communicate on a national level.” There are over 7,000 active Amateur Radio clubs in the U.S. Most, including the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club (call sign: NA4DC), are ARRL-affiliated amateur radio clubs. Established in 2010, the Davie/Cooper City club has approximately 100 members. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, at 7:30pm, at Moose Lodge, 4483 SW 64th Avenue in Davie. Licensed amateur radio operators and prospective amateurs are welcome to join. Annual dues are only $10. It is a “radio active” club, which means members operate as much as they can. They arrange monthly outings to make high frequency contacts, host a bi-weekly 2m net, participate in the Amateur Radio Relay League’s annual “Field Day,” and occasionally operate special events. Every other Thursday, at 7pm, the club holds a technical assistance net on one of the local repeaters. Hams can ask for assistance with any technical issues they are having with equipment and installation and the other net members try to assist. For information on the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club, visit www.dcarc.club.

Body contouring: Show off the new you. Have you lost a significant amount of weight but are still dealing with loose skin? A series of plastic surgeries called body contouring S. Alexander Earle, MD can help trim excess skin from several places on your body.
Dr. Earle discusses different areas of the body where body contouring may help.
Sometimes people believe removing extra skin after bariatric surgery or significant weight loss is a purely cosmetic procedure. But in many cases it also has a practical health purpose.
• Chest: Men and women may require breast surgery to remove extra skin from the chest. “For women, the procedure is similar to a breast lift. This may be combined with implants, if needed. For men, the plastic surgeon performs a male breast reduction procedure,” explains Dr. Earle, who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
“Body contouring can be done after weight loss to prevent rashes, discomfort and chafing,” says S. Alexander Earle, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida.
• Abdomen: Extra skin can be removed and muscles tightened with abdominoplasty. This makes the entire stomach area look better and tighter. • Thighs: A plastic surgeon can remove extra skin on thighs – depending on how heavy the thigh still is and the anatomic location of the skin.
• Upper arms: Patients often complain of deflated arms that resemble batwings.
Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.
Removing excess skin from the armpit to the elbow gives the upper arms their shape back. • Face: Stretched out skin along the neck and jawline can be removed to reveal a more healthy and youthful appearance. Body contouring is an efficient way to get rid of excess skin after your weight loss. “It can help eliminate imperfections and loose skin that diet and exercise can’t,” says Dr. Earle. Note: Not all procedures are covered by insurance. This depends on the location of the excess skin, your symptoms, and your insurance coverage.

College Academy Students Participates in YMCA Internship
SCHOOL NEWS
By Debby Teich
B
rooke Bambis, Davie resident and senior at College Academy at Broward College, hopes to have her own nonprofit someday. After serving as a Bank of America Student Leader, she has a much a much better idea of how a nonprofit operates. As part of the program, she was selected to participate in an eight-week paid internship at the YMCA of South Florida. “I aspire to have my own nonprofit focused around increasing sports participation for children with developmental disabilities,” said Brooke. “From my internship, I learned that I can and will make the change I wish to see within my community. I now have more knowledge on how a nonprofit works, how I can help kids locally, and how people with similar passions can come together to make a difference. This experience has been one of the best chapters of my life.” The internship opportunity was presented to five Broward juniors and seniors, who were selected to participate in the annual program in recognition of their community ser-
vice efforts and academic achievements. It gives junior and senior level students the opportunity to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on community work experience at local nonprofits. They learn civic, social and business leadership skills and the critical role nonprofits play in the community. Since 2004, the program has connected 60 teens from Broward County with summer employment, and has supported 2,200 young people nationwide. “Our Student Leaders Program is so much more than an internship,” said Lori Chevy, Fort Lauderdale market president, Bank of America. “It is an effort to give young professionals the tools to be successful adults, make responsible financial decisions, experience the gift of nonprofit work and ultimately prepare them to lead and transform their community,” Brooke says that fitness week was one of the highlights of her internship at the YMCA. The kids learned about concussions, a topic that has special meaning for her. “It was amazing to watch the
kids’ enthusiasm about concussion awareness,” said Brooke. “A few months ago, I sustained a concussion. This project was one step towards the path I want to pursue in the future. I aspire to become a concussion advocate on a local and national level.” As part of the program, Brooke also attended a weeklong leadership summit in Washington D.C. with 200 students from around the country. The trip included a tour of Capitol Hill, skill-building workshops, a service learning project, sessions to develop better money habits and meetings with members of Congress. “The best part of Washington was seeing how people from diverse backgrounds can come together to achieve great things,” said Brooke. “Every student leader I met wanted to initiate change in their communities and realized that their dreams will become realities with hard work.” Brooke plans to pursue a career in nursing. She wants to get a doctoral degree in nursing, so she can become a nurse attorney or a nurse anesthetist.
Brooke Bambis spent time with kids at the YMCA and visited the White House.

R recently revealed two reasons Americans prefer homeownership. They include the opportunity to build equity and a stable and safe environment. Homeownership becomes a part of your wealthbuilding strategy. Rental rates will rise in the next year by an average of 8%. It is more desirable for a landlord to obtain a new tenant at a higher rate than to renew the lease with the existing tenant at his current rental rate. This is becoming the new trend. How have recent current events affected our markets? ▸▸ Many economists have pointed to Brexit (Britain’s Exit from the European Union) as a reason that interest rates will remain low for the next few months. However, Trulia’s Chief Economist Ralph McLaughlin warns that this will not always be the case in a recent post: “While the departure of the UK from the European Union has driven down the 10-year bond, and thus mortgage rates, we expect them to rebound later in the year as uncertainty over the economic consequences of the departure lifts.” ▸▸ The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and Freddie Mac all project that mortgage interest rates will increase by close to a full percentage point over the next twelve months. ▸▸ According to CoreLogic’s most recent Home Price Index Report, home prices will appreciate by 5.3% over the next 12 months. ▸▸ T he Federal Reserve recently reported that a homeowner’s net worth is 36 times greater than that of a renter ($194,500 vs. $5,400). ▸▸ In a Forbes article, the National Association of Realtors’ (NAR) Chief Economist Lawrence Yun predicts that in 2016 the net worth gap will widen even further to 45 times greater. Homeownership is a form of “forced savings.” Every time you pay your mortgage, you are contributing to your net worth. Every time you pay your rent, you are contributing to your landlord’s net worth. What about Baby Boomers? The myth exists that retirees (empty nesters) will instantly desire a smaller home. However, many decide to actually upsize to a larger home or invest in a second home. With families scattered all over the world, empty nester parents long for all their children to be in a desirable destination with extra space for large family vacations, reunions, extended visits, or to allow other family members to move in with them – aging parents or boomerang kids. According to Merrill Lynch, 4.2 million retirees moved into a new home last year and two-thirds of retirees say that they are likely to move at least once during retirement. Retirees often find their homes become places for family to come together and reconnect, particularly during holidays or summer vacations. Whether you are a renter on the fence or an existing homeowner, the Real Estate marketplace has changed. You may need to survey your bank and other lending institutions to ask: ▸▸ What is the minimum down payment required to purchase a new home, a second home or an investment property? ▸▸ What is the minimum FICO score required to qualify for a mortgage? ▸▸ What Debt-to-Income ratio is allowed? If you thought homeownership or a second home was out of reach, contact me so that I may answer all your questions. Real Estate is still one of the safest vehicles to grow your wealth. Beware of the Sippy Cup

any parents have been educated early in regards to the potential hazards in the misuse of baby bottles. As bottles are used for infants/babies, they usually contain milk or formula. Parents are now being educated against putting their child down with a bottle for fear of contributing to early childhood caries (ECC). In fact, the occurrence of multiple cavities at this young age, ECC, was for a long time referred to as “baby bottle cavities.” Parents have also been instructed to wean their child off of the bottle as their child approached the toddler years. In comes the “sippy cup.” It is not a bottle. It is spill proof. It is perfect for travel, prevents spills, and kids seem to keep quieter longer when they have them. It is perfect for use… and misuse. The problem is that functionally the use of the sippy cup creates the same exposure to sugary beverages as the bottle. The use of both bottles and sippy cups necessitate an extension forward of the tongue with a simultaneous retraction of the cheeks. This action causes an exposure of the front teeth to liquid while at the same time removes the natural cleansing effect of the saliva and tongue. When the liquid is milk or juice, the result is an increased likelihood of developing cavities. The importance of this is highlighted by the 10% rise in occurrence of cavities in 2-5 year olds in this decade vs. last.

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the follow sippy cup tips: ▸▸ Use sippy cups as they were intended, as a transitional tool from bottle to cup. They therefore should not be used for extended periods of time. ▸▸ Sippy cups should be filled with juice or milk for meals only. ▸▸ A child should not be using a sippy cup for bedtime or naps, unless filled with water. ▸▸ Diluting juice does not significantly reduce the cavity causing ability of the juice. Whether it is potty training, removal of a pacifier, or discontinuing the use of a bottle, transitioning our children can be an extremely challenging part of parenting. It is our opinion, that patience and consistency are the keys to success. In terms of the transition from the bottle, we highly recommend creating a routine that promotes the drinking of water. Juices and milk should be saved for meal times only. Getting your child used to this early will surely help reduce the need for avoidable dental treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Back to School By Evan Baron
section head
O
nce again, the summer has quickly passed us by and it is time for the school year to begin again. It is an exciting and often stressful time, as children begin a new year with new classes, new teachers and sometimes new schools. For children of divorced parents, there can be some additional stress. Of course, parents who place the children first can make it much less stressful. These days we are seeing more equal time sharing between mom and dad. This also means equal responsibilities for each parent as well. In an intact marriage, parents usually assume certain roles and assist each other. In a one parent household, there are no longer defined roles. Mom and Dad must each get the children up and ready on time, perhaps pack lunches and, most importantly, make sure the kids complete homework assignments. Communication between parents is the key to a successful school year. Each parent must realize that they are on the same team and they should not be looking for a “gotcha” moment. Each should be ready to assist each other rather than try and find fault to be used in a court proceeding. Joint parenting is not a contest - Mom vs. Dad. It is an attempt to have both parents do what is best for the child, as opposed to trying to prove who may be the better parent.

Family law
Divorce • Relocation • Custody Child Support • Domestic Violence The most common equal time sharing schedule is two nights with one parent (Monday and Tuesday), two nights with the other parent (Wednesday and Thursday) and the weekend (Friday to Monday) rotating from week to week. A set schedule, such as this, gives a child some stability and doesn’t cause him/ her to wonder where he/she will be sleeping from day to day. Of course, communication between parents is still necessary. Class projects, homework and school events must be known to each parent. Parents should not rely on their children to deliver this information. Often, teachers will be accommodating and provide duplicate information, so each parent is aware of assignments and future school events. Shared Parental Responsibility requires shared information. Sometimes I encounter parents who are so angry with each other that their focus is on the other parent’s possible shortcomings rather than working together to assist the children. Unfortunately, emotions sometime interfere with common sense. It is difficult to successfully maintain an equal time sharing schedule if the parties do not reside in close proximity to one another. Getting a child to school on time can be a problem if one of the parents resides far from the school. It is not in a child’s best interests to have to wake up extremely early to accommodate a parent who chooses to reside a distance from his/her school. If a parent truly wants to have equal time, the child’s needs must come first. A child who has both parents in his/her life will derive a benefit, but only if the focus of each parent is the child and his/her needs. The law firm of Evan H. ifteen years ago this month, our country endured the unimaginable. The terror attacks of 9/11 were an assault on each and every one of us - and forever changed the way we go about our lives. As we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent souls who perished that fateful day, we also must look toward the future and closer to home. While law enforcement agencies throughout the country have had incredible success in preventing another 9/11 and large-scale attack from occurring at American landmarks, we continue to face mounting security concerns at our soft targets especially our vital houses of worship and lively community centers. Sadly, these important institutions, because of their very welcoming and open-door nature, face special security risks each and every day. These foundations of a civil and enlightened society have tragically become targets for individuals and groups who are intent on seeking to inflict harm, either because they are fueled by hate or suffering from mental illness. From the deplorable church shooting in Charleston, S.C., to the relentless threats against synagogues and mosques, to the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, heinous attacks of terror and hate have become far too common. In light of these recent events, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League, hosted its Annual Security Conference last month to combat the rash of attacks and threats proactively. By working closely together with BSO and security experts, these important houses of worship and community centers can better protect their institutions and congregations. The exchange of information with the community is an integral aspect of our security goals. The best defense in keeping us safe is a good offense. By providing practical security information, attendees are empowered with the knowledge necessary to keep their institutions secure. By understanding that security is an ongoing commitment and something on the forefront of their minds at all times, institutions can better balance their openness with safety. At this year’s conference, scores of law enforcement officers and representatives from dozens of synagogues, churches, mosques, and other religious institutions and community centers came out to learn how to build a culture of security 24/7. BSO officials and private security professionals also provided vital security information, including preparing for an active shooter situation, and critical safety recommendations to keep all citizens safe. Securing religious institutions and community centers is not a new concern for me. From the moment I became Sheriff, my number one priority has been aimed at keeping our diverse communities safe. In recent years, the Annual Security Conference, originally aimed at Jewish synagogues to address safety concerns during the high holy days, has grown to encompass all religions and walks of life. As always, I urge the community to remain vigilant. If you see something out of the ordinary, say something so BSO can respond to it. Remember, you are not alone. We are all united in this quest for peace. For information, visit sheriff.org.

fter all the sad news lately, Davie Soroptimists decided to do something special. They went to the Davie Police Department to “Hug a Cop” to show appreciation for always being in the forefront protecting residents. On July 13, family, friends and members met at the Davie Police Department to help show appreciation for being there for us in a professional and caring way. Gayle Buening baked a special recipe that she created and has called it Davie Cop Cookies. The officers certainly appreciated the hugs, sweets and love in the room. It was decided that we will be do this more often and not only when there is a tragedy. Hugs will be available on a regular basis! The flags are at half-staff again, as we continue to try and understand the violence that has run rampant across the world. We remember those lost or injured with heavy hearts and pray for more love and understanding.
