Catch Some Air with Some of South Florida’s Best Amateur Skaters at “Skate Off 2016” By Beverly Perkins

T

he three part summer series of open skateboarding concludes this month with the highly anticipated “Skate Off 2016”. The best amateur skaters in South Florida will be able to showcase their skills and compete for prizes from a variety of sponsors. The City of Hollywood will be hosting the highly anticipated event at the Stan Goldman Memorial Skate Park located at 800 Knights Road, Hollywood on Saturday, August 27th from 9:00am-4:00pm. In preparation of the event, amateur skaters are encouraged to practice their tricks, prepare to compete and pre-register during “Skate Jam” at the Boulevard Heights Community Center skate park, located at 6770 Garfield Street from 1:00-5:00pm on August 13th. Space is limited, so it is suggested to pre-register for this free funfilled program complete with a live DJ.

The South Florida skateboarding community is growing and the City of Hollywood is on the forefront of hosting amateur skating contests in the area. Last year, ‘‘Skate Off 2015” brought in a crowd of more than 200 attendees, with over 60 registered competitors from 20 cities in the South Florida area. This adrenaline-induced sport has had a positive impact on the youth in the community, and the City is looking for those sponsors who wish to support and enhance the growing event. In-kind sponsorships may include products and services related to skateboarding or serve as prizes for contest winners. Additional opportunities such as promotional materials for giveaways are also welcome. For more information on available sponsorship opportunities please contact Tyrone Gordon, Special Event Coordinator, at 954-921-3906 or tgordon@hollywoodfl.org.

Skaters will be divided up into three age groups: 7-11, 12-15 and 16 and up. The judging panel will be comprised of three experienced Skateboarders. Prizes will be awarded to the top three scoring participants in each group’s Amateur Contest and/or Best Trick Contest. Space is limited and registrations are on a first come first serve basis. Participant check in begins promptly at 8:30am and ends at 9:30am. If space is available, day-of registrations will be accepted, after 9:30am. It is highly recommended that participants wear helmets for safety. Pre-register by August 24th by visiting www.hollywoodfl.org/skateoff. For more information contact the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts at 954921-3404 or email events@hollywoodfl. org. Forms will also be accepted at City of Hollywood, ATTN: Skate Off 1405 S. 28th Avenue, Hollywood, FL. 33020.

Recycling Has Its Perks for Hollywood Residents! By Beverly Perkins

R

ecycling Perks, a new rewards-for-recycling partnership has been announced for the City of Hollywood. This enhanced recycling incentive program will include multi-family and commercial property owners. Although, the last program with Recyclebank was successful, the contract expired and the City had a competitive bid process in which three companies were evaluated. The process included reviewing the company’s qualifications, project approach and plan, communication and marketing plan as well as customer service and price. Based on those qualifications, Recycling Perks was ranked the highest vendor of the three. Recycling Perks serves ten cities and regions throughout Georgia, Florida and Virginia and successfully provides a comprehensive incentive program to nearly 400,000 homes in communities ranging from 1,400 - 96,000 households while assisting cities in achieving their goals to increase recycling. Beginning in mid-September, all single family, multi-family, and commercial participants will be rewarded “Perk Points” for placing their recycling cart out for weekly collection. Recycling Perks offers reward points to registered users that are redeemable for coupons, discounts and special deals with local vendors, national retailers, restaurants, grocers and more. In addition, the City’s new recycling rewards partner will assign a local Recycling Perks representative to assist with Hollywood residents’ needs. Throughout the year the local representative will be available to promote the program by participating in neighborhood meetings, environmental awareness campaigns and attending City-sponsored lectures and events.

AUGUST 2016 | OUR CITY Hollywood

In 2009, single stream recycling was introduced in the City of Hollywood allowing all recyclable materials to be collected in one cart. Additionally, the City launched a rewards program to encourage residential recycling. The City’s recycling program was expanded in 2015 to include mandatory recycling for all new and existing multi-family units and businesses. Over 9,000 tons of materials were recycled in Hollywood last year alone which otherwise would have gone into a landfill because of the popularity of the rewards program and the additional recycling efforts. Garbage is removed from the waste stream when recycling takes place. Not only is this good for the environment, but it helps the City reduce its costs and continue to provide cost effective residential garbage and recycling collections For additional information or media inquiries on the City’s new partnership with Recycling Perks, please contact Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Public Information Manager, 954-921-3328 or jhussey@hollywoodfl.org.

Hollywood Attorney David Singer Greets the Sherman Tank By Beverly Perkins

H

ollywood attorney David W. Singer was present for the grand arrival of the Sherman Tank. The World War II signature artifact was being celebrated at the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center (HDEC). Many came out to the site of the new South Florida Holocaust Museum for this special event including Senator Bill Nelson, who procured the infamous tank. As Senator Nelson addressed an audience of local dignitaries, he noted that there’s a strong likelihood that the tank saw action in the Battle of the Bulge-the last big battle of WW II-fought in the frozen Ardennes Forest in Belgium. The December 1944 battle was the largest tank battle in the history of human warfare and the bloodiest battle for the Americans in World War II. The United States Department of the Army lists 108,347 casualties, including 19,246 killed, 62,489 wounded and 26,612 captured or missing. Symbolic of enduring freedom, the Sherman Tank had extra meaning for Singer. He felt a personal connection with a Tank that saw action in the Bulge. “Having the Sherman Tank that saw action in the Bulge, here in South Florida, is particularly meaningful to me,” said Singer. “My dad, Bernie Singer, a US infantryman, was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulgecaptured on his 22nd birthday, December

10

25, 1944. He was taken by railcar to Stalag 9 B in Bad Orb, Germany. There, the Jewish prisoners were segregated and, largely starved. Three months later, he was liberated by Russian troops. My dad, at age 93 is still here today. He seems to me, like the Sherman Tank-indestructible!” Singer is an active community leader. He has chaired Jail & Bail, a staple of Broward County charitable fundraisers for 25 years, raising close to $5 million for the American Cancer Society, where he is the past chairman of the Board of Directors. Singer is a founding member of the Hollywood Professional Lions Club and served 20 years on the board of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. He is the vice chair of the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Law Board of Governors. The IMPACT Ambassador Program Inaugural Fundraising Event is Ready for Take Off Community News

By Beverly Perkins

T

he IMPACT Young Ambassadors program is just over a year old. In such a short time, this exclusive group has already achieved so much to help make a difference for Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. Through sponsorship and membership dollars, they have raised more than $100,000. This active group of young leaders want to ensure that the highest level of care is available today, and for generations to come. These ambitious young philanthropists will be hosting their first inaugural fundraising event later this month. “Friday Night Flights” will be held on Friday, August 26th at Jet Runway Café. The evening will begin at 7:00pm on the runway of the Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport. Guests will enjoy a speakeasy ambiance, wine flight stations, cuisine

and drink, a silent auction and live music. “Boarding Passes” are $125.00 per individual and $225.00 per couple. All proceeds will, of course, benefit Memorial & Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospitals. To purchase tickets, please visit www.fridaynightflights. kintera.org. The vision behind the group is to engage and bring together a new generation of professionals and leaders who are interested in philanthropy, networking and investing in their communities. They are searching for young leaders in the community who share the same drive, energy, passion and ambition who want to be a part of a results oriented organization. Currently at ninety members and growing, these young adults are community leaders, working profes-

sionals, former patients, medical staff and physicians with a desire to play a major role as the next generation of support for Memorial Healthcare System. Individuals can become members by making an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, with a $100 individual membership fee. Donations may be directed to the program(s) of the member’s choice, resulting in total transparency. Annual, quarterly or monthly payment options are available. A philanthropic annual membership will provide an invitation to social gatherings, leadership events and fundraising opportunities. Additional benefits include exclusive invitations to Foundation & Healthcare System events, reduced tickets to Foundation events (when available), recognition on donor wall, an annual report and the opportunity to serve in leadership roles. Jet Runway Café is located at 5540 NW 21st Terrace, Ft. Lauderdale. The Foundations’ offices are located on the Hollywood campus of the Memorial Regional Hospital. For more information on how to get involved in IMPACT and for sponsorship opportunities, contact Summer Dowler at sdowler@mhs.net or 954-265-6304.

It’s Anchors Aweigh for a South Broward High School Grad By Beverly Perkins

H

ollywood native and 2001 South Broward High School graduate, Gina Etienne, is currently residing in Spain aboard the USS Ross. The former Bulldog is a Petty officer 2nd Class serving in the United States Navy as an electronics technician on the guided missile destroyer. “As a Navy electronics technician I keep the electronic equipment running so we can stay in the fight,” said Etienne. “I work on the ship’s radar system and everything electronic on the ship.” This forward-deployed Arleigh Burke-class ship operates out of Rota, Spain and is one of four ported there. Named after Medal of Honor recipient Captain Donald K. Ross, the vessel measures approximately 500 feet and is powered by four gas turbines that allow the destroyer to achieve over 30 mph in open seas. It is also fitted with the Aegis ballistic missile defense (BMD) capability that enables the ship to conduct long-range surveillance, tracking and engagement of short and medium-range ballistic missiles. “On our planet, more than 70 percent of which is covered by water, being there means having the ability to act from the sea. The Navy is uniquely positioned to be there; the world’s oceans give the Navy the power to protect America’s interests anywhere, and at any

16

time,” says Lt. Philip Fortnam, Navy Office of Community Outreach Public Affairs. “Your Navy protects and defends America on the world’s oceans. Navy ships, submarines, aircraft and, most importantly, tens of thousands of America’s finest young men and women are deployed around the world doing just that. They are there now. They will be there when we are sleeping tonight. They will be there every Saturday, Sunday and holiday this year. They are there around the clock, far from our shores, defending America at all times.” “The Navy has been great to me,” said Etienne. “I love travel. It’s great benefit. I’m loving Spain so far and can’t wait to explore the rest of Europe.” Approximately 30 officers and 300 enlisted men and women make up the ship’s company. Their jobs are highly specialized and each one is extremely important regardless if it’s washing dishes and preparing meals or maintaining engines and handling weaponry. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Etienne explained that she and other Ross sailors know they are part of a legacy that will be last beyond their lifetimes. “By serving in the Navy, I’m serving my country and paying it forward to the next generation of Americans,” said Etienne.

Choosing A Plastic Surgeon

• Cremation

By Charles A. Messa, III, MD, FACS

• Advance Planning

rospective patients often ask, “Who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result or a disastrous complication. All too often, South Florida patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is, “Is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery?” Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital, depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Hollywood Leadership Class XL Graduates

ing opportunities for personal growth by teaching theatrical skills of expression. The Greater Hollywood Chamber is most proud of the accomplishments of its Leadership Hollywood Class XL (40) for the community. The graduation at The Diplomat Resort & Spa was a perfect ending to an outstanding year of learning about all the different facets of the greater Hollywood from environment and government to business, education, healthcare, tourism, economy and the legal system. While learning together, those like-minded individuals, willing to take the time to educate themselves about their community to better serve it, formed an extraordinary bond that will make them allies, partners and friends as they step up to lead our community. Lois Weiss, a class participant and Hollywood resident, was voted by her peers to represent the leadership program on the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Kudos to class XL! Anyone interested in participating in the next Leadership Hollywood Class XLI (41) is encouraged to contact the Chamber at 954-9234000 or www.HollywoodChamber.org.

pet of the month

“Cocoa” Adopted from The Broward Animal Care and Adoption Center, Cocoa is a happy 2 year old Shih Tzu. His favorite person is his human mommy, Karen. His favorite toy is actually his Shih Tzu stepbrother, Teddi. He likes to take long walks and long naps. However, he dislikes being woken up from them. His favorite thing to do is to find a spot on top of the couch and look out the window all day. He was last seen walking around the Hollywood City Hall circle with his adopted family.

Kia Leads All Industry Brands in 2016 Initial Quality Study Soul and Sportage Receive Initial Quality Awards

Kia ranks highest among all automotive industry nameplates in the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). This significant milestone comes just one year after Kia ranked second overall in the 2015 IQS. It also represents the first time in 27 years that a non-luxury brand has led the industry in the U.S. Initial Quality Study. In addition to our industry-leading performance this year, as a brand, two of Kia’s top models, the 2016 Soul and Sportage, won highest initial quality awards in their respective segments.
