School’s Out for Summer!

I

t ’ s officially summer here in South Florida . The

kids have finished their final days of school and the hot, humid weather is here again. It’s time to seriously think about summer activities and vacations. We live in the perfect place to enjoy all that summer has to offer. It does not matter whether you take a short trip to the breathtaking Florida Keys or prefer the magic of Orlando, or simply spend the lazy days of summer relaxing with friends and family at backyard barbecues and picnics at the beach. It’s not where you go, but rather what you do that is important. Summertime fun is when many precious family memories are made. That big project at work or the never-ending chore list at home can wait. The little things you do with your children, your siblings and your friends are what really matter and create memories for a lifetime. Take the time this summer to enjoy life and each other. I hope you are also enjoying reading our monthly magazines. Some of our readers may have noticed a new logo and a new name on the front cover. Don’t be confused. We are still the same team, the same owner/publisher, and the same great local community news magazine. With six magazines, covering all of West Broward, we wanted to be consistent with one common name – so welcome to Our City Media. PS: Don’t forget to wish dad a Happy Father’s Day this month! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Everyone’s a Winner at the 4th Annual Pill Box Pharmacies 5K Run/Walk By Debby Teich

A

pproximately 425 runners ,

walkers and strollers participated in the Fourth Annual City of Pembroke Pines Pill Box Pharmacies 5K Run/Walk and ¼ Mile Fun Run. The event raised $21,447 for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. “This race builds a great sense of community,” said organizer Kathleen Kuebler. “Everyone crossing the finish line is sweating, but as soon as they catch their breath they stand by the track and cheer on the other runners.” Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz was the official race starter. JS Entertainment helped the runners keep the pace with the latest music and Baptist Health provided water bottles to keep the participants hydrated. There were many participants from the Pembroke Pines Charter School System, including students, teachers, volunteers and principals. This year’s team captains were: Brian Tonietti (East Elementary Campus), Chrissy Ortis (Central Campus for the elementary and middle schools), Patricia AlonsoCorrea and Ana Pacini (FSU Campus), Miriam Hernandez (high school campus), Karen Surowitz (West Elementary Campus), and

12

Natalie Miller (West Middle Campus). Medals were awarded to the top three males and females in the Overall and Masters Categories, as well as to the top three males and females in age group categories from 12 and under to 75 and over. The overall winner was 17-year-old Carlos Penaranda, a Pembroke Pines Charter School student who clocked in at 16:36:6. The slowest runner/ walker made it to the finish line in just over an hour. After participants finished, they were surprised with a pancake breakfast that was donated by Chartwells Catering Services. It was complete with sausage, eggs, fruit, juice and muffins. They also received goodie bags from sponsors. Kuebler is hoping that neighborhoods will enter teams in next year’s race. “I would love to get teams from East, Central and West Pembroke Pines running and walking to benefit the students in our community,” said Kuebler. “It is not too early to begin training!” Race results can be viewed at www.AccuChipTiming.com. Southwest Regional Library to Host S.T.E.A.M. Makers Day By Debby Teich

D

IY (Do -It-Yourself) projects often take place in shops , garages and on kitchen tables. On July 12, from 10am to 5pm, “makers” will have an opportunity to share their creativity in science, technology, engineering, art and math at Southwest Regional Library’s 1st Annual S.T.E.A.M. Makers Day. The library is searching for people who want to exhibit, as well as those who want to learn. There is no charge to participate or attend. “Many ‘makers’ say they have no other place to share what they do,” said Patricia Ventura, event and exhibit coordinator for Southwest Regional Library. “We are providing a way for them to show what they have made and to share what they have learned with others in the community.” S.T.E.A.M. Makers Day is a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, as well as a celebration of the “Maker” movement. Part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new, S.T.E.A.M. Makers Day is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. Visitors will learn how to sew, crochet, arrange flowers, brew the perfect cup of tea, make string and wind instruments, turn a tooth brush into a robot, and make a Brush-Bot. They will learn about 3D printers, handson “Snap Circuits,” robotics from the Hollywood Hills Spartan’s Robotics Club, Coder Dojo (computer coding), and more. “We want the public to know

that the library is great place to check out books, but it is also much more,” said Ventura. “We are always developing programming to meet the changing needs of the community.” Ten-year-old Danny Jackson attended a similar event, the Miami Maker Faire. “It was so cool,” said Jackson. “I want to be a computer programmer when I grow up and I got to talk to people who do that.” Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. The deadline for registration is June 16 at 3pm. For information or an exhibitor’s application, call Patricia Ventura at 954-357-7127 or send an email to pventura@broward.org. They searched for eggs, visited with the Easter Bunny, and enjoyed balloon animals, face painting, and entertainment. Silver and golden egg winners received prizes. Kids indulged in one of their favorite foods at the Annual Pembroke Pines Sundaes with the Bunny event held at the Walter C. Young Dinner Theater. Guests selected from more than 20 toppings as they made their own sundaes. They also enjoyed a holiday show and took photos with Peter Cottontail.

Jump Into A Brand New Smile At Naidu Orthodontics By Jill Sharpe

N

aidu Orthodontics combines the most cutting edge technology

available today with the most advanced orthodontic techniques in the industry to improve smiles. As a result of their commitment, every patient receives the most precise results in the fastest possible time.

Dr. Kistama Naidu, a board-certified orthodontist, answered some commonly asked questions about his practice.

What differentiates Naidu Orthodontics from other orthodontic practices? I believe our practice is special because we place a high

value on customer service and we respect our patients time. We make a point of not overbooking appointments and our staff works together to minimize wait time as much as possible. No patient ever waits more than 10 or 15 minutes to be seen. We also utilize the latest technology in the industry to give our patients the very best smiles in the shortest treatment time. In addition to the more well known Invisilign, we offer advanced technologies such as “SureSmile®”, which reduces treatment time by a third and Incognito hidden braces. These treatments are only available at 5-10 percent of orthodontic offices nationwide. Technologies such as these and the new 3D I-CAT scan, a first in Broward County, makes Naidu the premier choice for orthodontic treatment.

The iCAT scanner produces high-resolution images and detailed 3-D views of the bones, teeth, nerves, sinuses, and structure of the head, face, neck and jaw. With a typical scan time of 8.5 seconds, and the ability to produce high-definition images in less than one minute, the iCAT imaging system emits 90% less radiation than traditional X-ray methods.

Who is your typical patient? There really is no typical patient as new

treatment techniques provide significant benefits for patients of all ages including 6 or 7 year olds, who may benefit from early limited treatment even before the permanent teeth come in, to adults who account for more than 30 percent of our patients.

Newer techniques and materials available at our office allow expanded intervals between orthodontic appointments to make the treatment more convenient than ever for all our patients.

What can patients expect when they visit your office? Describe the office environment. We want our patients to feel part of the family

and we want their experience here to be enjoyable at our two locations. Our staff is friendly and inviting and so is our decor which is inspired by Dr. Naidu’s longtime passion for basketball and love of the Miami Heat. When patients look up, there are televisions over every chair and there is even aromatherapy available.

Anything else you would like readers to know? With a strong belief

that education is the key to a brighter tomorrow, we are a proud sponsor of local schools, charities, sports teams and fairs. Along with oral hygiene education, our orthodontic team participates in career days, fundraisers and charitable events to benefit many non-profit organizations in our own community.

ment, or be reimbursement for payment for any other service, examination, or treatment ement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee service, examination or treatment.

What do you want families to know about how your practice views early dental care? We want

our families to know that it is important that children grow comfortable visiting the dentist. That is why we recommend that parents bring in their kids by age 1. We do not take radiographs on children younger than 3 unless needed. The staff will perform a cleaning and fluoride will be applied to the teeth. Early visits are meant to properly educate parents and children on correct tooth brushing techniques and how to establish positive nutritional habits including how to avoid baby bottle decay.

Your office is equipped with the latest technology, tell me about that. Children 3 years of age and

above receive a limited number of x-rays (normally 2-4) to help determine the presence of any cavities between the teeth that are not readily visible when the dentist examines your child’s teeth. Our office is equipped with hand-held x-ray units and digital films that emit a quarter of the radiation of older, conventional x-ray units. Older children (8 and above) receive an additional x-ray known as a panoramic film. This film gives our dentists an overall picture of all your child’s teeth, sinuses, jaw bones, and other hard and soft tissues of his/her head and neck.

Do you treat children with special needs? Yes, we most certainly do. Children with special needs may experience more dental problems due to sensitivities around the mouth, diet, and difficulty with brushing. With patience, perseverance and determination many of these challenges can be overcome. Specialists in our office have several years of additional training in the care and management of special needs patients and in understanding the psychology of child behavior which puts us in a unique position to care for these patients. How is your practice different from other dental practices? We

started our practice with the goal of being accessible to the community we serve. Our approach is gentle, kind, and compassionate. Parents are encouraged to be with their child throughout all appointments and we offer different treatment approaches tailored to the individual needs of your child. We are a full-service pediatric dental office, offering treatment with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), oral sedation (done in-office for fearful or apprehensive patients), and hospital dentistry (performed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital). Moreover, we are open six days a week, offering patients evening, morning, and Saturday appointments. We are also one of the few pediatric dental offices in Pembroke Pines to accept most dental insurances including PPO, HMO and Florida Kid Care.

Pembroke Pines Fire Department Offers Safety Tips for Fourth of July By Debby Teich

A

lthough the

Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department wants to make sure that its residents are as safe as possible. “This is a time Americans look forward to celebrating and it is important people don’t forget to be careful,” said Sandra Lluis, Fire Marshal for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Most people do not realize that the use of illegal fireworks results in an increase of serious injuries.” According to Lluis, Florida categorizes illegal fireworks as: roman candles, bottle rockets, mortars, or anything that explodes flies or lifts-off. Under Florida law, residents can purchase approved small fireworks, such as sparklers, glow worms, fountains and snakes. Lluis warns, however, that there is still an increased risk of injury even when using approved fireworks.

22

June 2014 | Our City Pembroke PInes

“Common injuries include serious burns to the hands, fingers, head, face, ears, eyes, and torso,” said Lluis. “Some firework novelties can reach high temperatures between 1,300 and 1,800 degrees - at least 200 degrees hotter than standard butane lighters.” Lluis says that knowing and following just a few safety tips can help everyone have a safe and fun Fourth of July celebration. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department advises all residents to follow these precautions: ▸▸ Never allow young children to play with or ignite approved fireworks. ▸▸ Older teens should only be allowed to use approved fireworks under close adult supervision. ▸▸ Purchase approved fireworks from reliable sellers. Avoid buying fireworks from retailers that make you sign a waiver. ▸▸ Read and follow the caution label before igniting. ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never hold any part of your body directly over the firework while lighting. ▸▸ Never attempt to re-light a “dud” firework. Instead wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water and throw it away. ▸▸ Never light fireworks near a house or building, dry leaves or grass, or any other material that can catch on fire. ▸▸ Keep a fire extinguisher, a bucket filled with water, or water hose on-hand for emergencies. A complete list of Florida-approved sparklers can be found on the State Fire Marshal’s website at the following link: http://www.myfloridacfo.com/division/sfm/ bfp/Documents/ApprovedSparklerList.pdf For information, visit www.ppines.com or send an email to slluis@ppines.com.

Laughter Is the Best Medicine at PPCHS Stand-Up Comedy Night By Debby Teich

M

embers of Pembroke

Pines Charter High School’s Jaguar Doctors of Tomorrow Club (JAG.DOT) recently mixed medicine and comedy to help raise money. The club hosted its first student Stand-Up Comedy Night, Laughter is the Best Medicine. It raised $2,500 to benefit Rebâti Santé Mentale, a non-profit group dedicated to bringing support and aid to mentally ill patients in Haiti. The event was held at the River of Grass Theater at the Academic Village and coincided with National Mental Health Awareness Month. Juniors Mollie Bayer and Deepthi Gangaram, who serve as co-presidents of JAG.DOT, organized the comedy night, and senior Alden Diaz was the host. PPCHS student comedians performed humorous skits, stand-up comedy, and impressions. They included: Melvin Lattimore, Tony London, Andy Iglesias, Sabrina Causing, Ethan Coe, Nick Berardino, and Raul (RJ) Reyes. There was also a special appearance by Ray Dass, a leading expert in SAT preparation, and celebrity among high school students. To meet a goal of $2,000, the JAG.DOT committee came up with a plan to motivate student comedians. They announced that the act which raised the most donations prior to the show would be crowned the PPCHS King/Queen of Comedy. Four comedians received the PPCHS Clown Fish Award for their fundraising efforts:

During the past three years, members have had opportunities to see first-hand surgical procedures, shadow physician assistants, and tour Miramar Hospital. In addition, they sponsor a monthly guest lecture series that brings in a variety of speakers from the medical field and surrounding community. Club members have partnered with Rebâti Santé Mentale in the past by volunteering at the Walk for Sanity at CB Smith Park. They also helped raise funds for Medical Students in Action, a University of Miami based organization that brings aid to the Dominican Republic. For information, visit www.pinescharter.net.

hy Do M y Feet H urt I n the M orning? What is

Plantar Fasciiitis? These are two questions I hear almost every day. The plantar fascia is a ligament-like band which runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. This band pulls on the heel bone which raises the arch of your foot as it pushes off the ground. If your foot moves incorrectly, the plantar fascia may become strained. The fascia can swell and its small fibers may start to fray--causing plantar fasciitis. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is poor foot mechanics. If your foot flattens too much, the fascia can overstretch and swell. If your foot does not flatten enough, the fascia may hurt from being pulled too tightly. People who suffer from plantar fasciitis often complain that the bottom of their feet hurt when they stand and they experience this most often in the morning. Pain is usually felt on the inside of the foot, close to where the heel and arch meet. Pain can diminish after walking, but it can return after rest or prolonged activity.

Heel spurs and bursitis are related problems which may develop in response to plantar fasciitis. A heel spur is an extra piece of bone which may grow near where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. The heel spur can form in response to the plantar fascia’s tug on the heel bone. Bursitis is a swelling of the bursa, or fluid filled sac, that reduces the friction between a ligament and a bone. Bursitis can occur if a swollen plantar fascia presses against a plantar bursa. How can you get relief from this pain? Your podiatric physician has the answer. If poor foot mechanics is the cause of your plantar fasciitis, custom made shoe inserts, also known as orthoses or orthotics, may provide relief. In addition, strategically placing tape on the foot can support the arch and control movement temporarily. If taping helps, orthotics may be prescribed. Orthotics are built from plaster casts of the feet and can control the way the foot moves. Other ways to reduce symptoms of plantar fasciitis include the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other medications as directed by your podiatrist. Severe pain may require prescription medication, injections, physical therapy, and stretching. As a last resort, surgery may be considered if other types of treatment don›t help you. The first step to feeling better is to consult your podiatric physician. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

Legally Speaking

To Appeal or Not Appeal By Evan Baron

O

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of

the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be valid. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are 5 District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal, which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final.

Except under limited circumstances, only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed. An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30 day window and hire an attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Mommy Makeover By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

M

orning sickness . Weight gain . S kin changes .

When you are pregnant, it can feel as though your body no longer belongs to you. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. But don’t despair, a Mommy Makeover can help you look your best again. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The breasts also grow due to weight gain and to prepare for nursing. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result is often smaller breasts, despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a Mommy Makeover can help.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a Mommy Makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Breast lift ▸▸ Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated “pancake” breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs; and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options, such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their Mommy Makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a Mommy Makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a Mommy Makeover. ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery, because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

Hair Loss By Gerardo Valdes, MD

H

air loss affects millions of men and women

in the United States. There are multiple treatments available for hair loss, from medications to surgery. The number and diversity of treatments to choose from can be rather confusing to patients. In this article, I will focus on three of the most common medical (nonsurgical) treatments available today, how they work, and what to expect. The treatments we will review are minoxidil (Rogaine), finasteride (Propecia) and low laser light therapy (LLLT). The first hair loss treatment is minoxidil, which is available in two strengths over the counter. It has been used for many years and is proven to be an effective treatment if used on a regular basis. The mechanisms by which it is thought to work are by increasing blood flow to the scalp; releasing growth factors that help support new microscopic blood vessels; and shortening of the telogen (resting, not actively growing) phase of the hair follicle, so that a larger number of hairs are actively growing. There are some drawbacks to minoxidil. For instance, the effects last only while you are regularly using the medication. Once minoxidil is discontinued, the effects wear off over time. Also, a small percentage of individuals may get some scalp irritation from the alcohol-based solution. However, the new foam version contains no propyl alcohol and helps prevent this problem. Another side effect is hair growth in unintended areas if the solution drips down during application.

The second treatment is finasteride, which is a medication for hair loss that requires a doctor’s prescription. It works differently than minoxidil, because it helps block the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone directly associated with hair loss. In the scalp, there are certain hairs that are vulnerable to the effects of DHT. When exposed to this hormone, they start to get thinner, shorter and eventually lost. Finasteride blocks the enzyme, 5 alpha reductase, which normally converts an individual’s testosterone to DHT. The resulting decrease in DHT leads to restoration of the hair follicles and slowing down or halting of hair loss. Finasteride has some known side effects, such as breast tenderness, decrease libido and decrease sexual function. These reactions are rare. However, if any of these manifest, the treatment should be discontinued. Lastly, we will discuss low laser light therapy (LLLT), also called phototherapy, which uses light at a frequency of 650 to 670nm (within the visible red light spectrum). Studies have demonstrated that the energy delivered by these devises have led to a shift of more hairs moving from the telogen (resting stage) to anagen (actively growing phase). The ideal candidates for this treatment are patients with only mild to moderate hair loss. Typically patients will see results after 4 to 6 months of treatment and must continue using the devise on a regular basis. There have been no significant side effects reported from this mode of treatment. If you are experiencing hair loss, I would recommend that you visit a hair loss specialist to get a thorough evaluation and recommended treatment plan that meets your specific needs. How to Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50%

upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage to worry about? Also, since the real estate market is improving, think of all the equity you could build up years from now if you could wipe out your second mortgage or credit line today? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be challenging. This is especially true if the second mortgage or credit line has converted from an interest only to a principal plus interest payment. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy. When mortgage liens are removed from a property during bankruptcy proceedings, it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. Bankruptcy courts permit a second mortgage or line of credit to be eliminated if the total amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the market value of the home. For example, if you owe $200,000 on the first mortgage of your principal residence, and $150,000 on your second mortgage of that same residence, BUT your principal residence is only worth $195,000, the $150,000 second mortgage is wiped out in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, tax free. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you can also reduce the total amount owed down to the appraised value on investment properties. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 proceedings. More importantly, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years, or even modify your mortgage through a loss mitigation program offered in South Florida bankruptcy courts. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you with annoying phone calls, or proceed with a foreclosure. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years of combined legal experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in one office. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a one-of-a-kind DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment.

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

F

oot and ankle injuries are very common in

sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive weightbearing. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments, including laser, are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the Microfracture Talus damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopy can be used to treat conditions such as: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; chronic instability; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages to arthroscopy include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedures; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail to alleviate the pain and deformity of a joint, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His partners are Dr. Al DeSimone, Dr. Fernando Moya, Dr. Alexander Bertot, Dr. Mark Fishman, Dr. Carlo Messina, Dr. David Shenassa, Dr. Nathan Vela and Dr. Michael Cohen. U

rinary leakage is an embarrassing and dis -

tressing problem for women. Many women have thought of this as a “natural” part of aging, however, many well tolerated and safe treatments are now available which can improve quality of life. Evaluation of urinary incontinence should include a detailed history and examination to determine what the best treatment option is for you. There are different causes of urinary leakage (incontinence) and the type of urinary incontinence will determine the possible treatments. The two most common types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is the leakage of urine with activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure such as: cough, laugh, sneeze, or exercise. Stress incontinence is related to a loss of support of the urethra (the tube between the bladder and the outside). Urge incontinence is due to an overactive bladder and is characterized by bladder muscle spasms. This causes a strong and sudden need to urinate and leakage may occur on the way to the bathroom. Women with this problem also tend to urinate very frequently. It is not uncommon for some women to have a combination of both stress and urge incontinence. The first step for managing urinary leakage can be noninvasive and of a behavioral nature. Most women are aware that coffee can influence the frequency and severity of their bladder symptoms, but other dietary changes may also positively influence bladder control. Over time, many women may also develop weakness of their pelvic floor muscles. This weakness contributes to urinary leakage since it takes away your ability to say “no” to your bladder. We’ve all heard about Kegel exercises, but surprisingly most women do them incorrectly. Some women can strengthen these muscles on their own with daily practice. Other patients may benefit from working with a pelvic floor physical therapist. Specially trained female pelvic floor therapists allow for treatment to be tailored to each patient with input and close communication with supervising physicians. For women who experience leakage with cough, sneeze, or exercise, treatment is directed at the urethra. Urethral bulking procedures tighten the urethral closure, are minimally invasive, and can be performed in the office. Alternatively, a sling procedure addresses the loss of support of the urethra and is performed as an outpatient surgical procedure. This is a highly successful and well-tolerated procedure. Treatment of overactive bladder urinary leakage may include the use of medications to relax the bladder muscle and decrease episodes of incontinence. Women who don’t respond to medications may qualify for advanced treatments for overactive bladder including bladder Botox and nerve stimulation procedures. Dr. Karen Soules is a fellowship trained Urogynecologist practicing in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), active member of The American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), and an active member of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU). She practices with Dr. Jennifer Pollak at the Florida Center for Urogynecology. Offices are located at 4340 Sheridan Street, Suite 201 in Hollywood and 601 N. Flamingo Road, Suite 101 in Pembroke Pines. To learn more about any of these interventions call (954) 989-9998 or visit www.floridaurogyn.com.

Autism In Flight Few of us would describe flying with children as particularly enjoyable or stress-free. Yet for parents of children with autism, some parents would rather drive their child halfway across the country than try to deal with the special challenges that airplanes and airports create for a child with autism. The lively crowds, loud, unfamiliar sounds, TSA officers in uniform and foreboding security machines can be very threatening to children in general, and could cause sheer panic in a child with a disorder in the autism spectrum. Nevertheless, traveling by air is something most people need to do at least occasionally. When I was contacted by two families in my district with children with Autism and I learned of the potential challenges they faced when using airports, I embarked on an effort to change that for all children and set out to create the “Autism in Flight” program. Besides making families feel comfortable, I also want airline and airport staff

to know more about autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that approximately 1 in 68 American children are on the autism spectrum. More specifically, it’s estimated that 1 in 42 boys, and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the US. Autism does not discriminate across cultures or ethnicities. The “Autism in Flight” exercise is a learning experience to help reduce everyone’s level of stress and make traveling a more pleasurable experience. If these children and their families know what to expect, they’ll be more prepared and at

ease; the same goes for airport personnel. During the event, children will check there luggage, be screened by TSA, and will be issued a boarding pass at the gate prior to boarding a JetBlue airplane. The plane won’t actually take-off, but announcements will be made and the children and families will be served “in-flight” snacks and beverages. They will also get a tour of the cockpit. This experience outlines what the expectations are, it gives them a very clear vision of what they need to do step by step, because our kids like to know in sequence what they need to do, and it gives them that repetition of doing it over and over to get used to the experience.

parents. “The Autism in Flight” program will be a recurring educational event at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. “It is my hope that with this program, it is possible for every child’s airplane trip to be an exciting and joyous event for all”! Barbara Sharief M.S.N., A.R.N.P. Broward County Mayor

Your District 8 Commissioner on a Mission!

A number of entities and staff have worked together to make the “Autism in Flight” program a success including the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the School Board of Broward County, the Broward County Aviation Department, TSA, JetBlue, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Superior Hospitality Management and the Hudson Group. This was our second annual Autism in Flight program. This year we partnered with five Broward County Elementary Schools: Silver Trail, Panther Run, Park Springs, Everglades and Dania. We had 10 students (4th-5th grades) from each school plus teachers and the students

“Sage”

Let’s Move! By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

T

he City of Pembroke Pines has made a commit-

ment to join “Let’s Move!” The comprehensive initiative was launched by First Lady Michelle Obama. It is dedicated to solving the problem of obesity in America within a generation. In June 2010, the First Lady called on the mayors of American cities to take a leadership role in “Let’s Move!” She asked elected officials to be proactive in preventing childhood obesity and to make their communities healthier for everyone. I encourage all of our residents to join us in increasing opportunities for healthy living and reducing childhood obesity in our community. We have developed a plan of action for the City of Pembroke Pines, and I am confident that we will be able to achieve our goals. The City has committed to achieving five goals designed to improve the health of residents, and will be implementing programs supporting these goals in the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools.

Sage is an 8-year-old Sheltie. He loves his mom and dad, because they feed him and take him for walks. He does not play with toys, because he likes to watch people, sleep and guard his mom while she is working as the manager of a homeowners association in Pembroke Pines. His favorite thing to do is to go to work with his mom, which he does every day. He does not like thunder, rain, trucks or when his mom sneezes. He was last seen lying at his mom’s office – just relaxing and waiting for people to come in and say “hello” to him.

Sponsored By:

The first goal is to start early and start smart by helping early care and education providers incorporate best practices for nutrition, physical activity and screen time into their programs. The second goal is to empower parents and caregivers by giving them the right information to make informative choices. The City will prominently display MyPlate, the USDA’s new food icon that serves as a quick visual reminder to make healthy food choices, in all municipal venues where food is served. The third goal is to provide healthy food in schools by increasing participation in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The fourth goal is to improve access to healthy, affordable foods by implementing healthy and sustainable food service guidelines that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in all municipal venues that serve food. And the fifth goal is to increase physical activity by mapping local play spaces, completing a needs assessment, developing an action plan, and launching a minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives aimed at increasing access to play. The National League of Cities (NLC), with the National Association of Counties (NLC), is participating in this project and supporting local officials who sign up to participate in “Let’s Move! Cities, Towns, and Counties (LMCTC),” which is a key component of the “Let’s Move! Initiative.” A proclamation about the initiative was presented to the Pembroke Pines Charter School System at last month’s Commission Meeting. For more information, please visit www.letsmove.gov. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-4356505, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.
