Spring is finally here!

T

his Florida ‘winter’ season certainly featured a variety of weather conditions. We had a number of cooler days and even colder nights followed by warm and wet weather. As we enter April, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. Time to think about what to do during the approaching summer months. Many of us are busy planning where to go and what to do for summer vacation. Like my family, many have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to reconnect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains, and travel abroad. Summer time is also time for camp activities and summer school. We are blessed with a variety of different camps from which to choose, including language camps, sports camps, music camps, arts & craft camps, and much more. There are a multitude of different kids’ activities and camps advertised in this issue. In addition, keep an eye out for our annual Summer Camp Guide, which will be featured in our May issue. There is something for everybody. Whatever you decide to do this spring and summer, just don’t forget to take along a copy of the ‘Our City Magazine’ to send us your picture.

Preventive dental care

is important throughout your life, no matter your age. Keep your smile healthy by practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. • Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to

contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

Join in the Fun at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge Community News

By Debby Teich

C

hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. On April 16, chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, from 9am-11am, at Club 19 at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquetball Club in Pembroke Pines. The event will include Mayors, elected officials and community leaders throughout Broward County. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Over 100 kids and parents typically attend. It is an opportunity for school-aged children to exercise their minds, as they compete against elected officials and one another. The first 200 players to join in the fun will receive a Swag Bag. Each month, the challenge rotates to different cities in the area. Recent challenges have been held in Hallandale Beach, Wilton Manors, Cooper City,

Coral Springs, Lauderhill, Tamarac and Davie. Kids receive a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend. Many of the students are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. Fourteen-year-old Justin Silvers has been playing chess for the past three years. He plans to attend the April challenge. “Chess is the ultimate game of the mind,” said Justin. “I am looking forward to meeting some other kids who also love the game, so I can play against them after school and on the weekends.” Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquetball Club is located at 10500 Taft Street. For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www. ppines.com/specialevents.

Students Will Find Ways to Give Back at the Annual Teen Volunteer Expo Community News

By Debby Teich

M

any teens are looking for volunteer opportunities as a way to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. Since 2006, the Teen Volunteer Expo has offered them an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event, which is co-sponsored by Pembroke Pines Charter High School and West Broward High School, will be held on April 30, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. Over 700 students are expected to attend the Expo, which is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. On one day, in one place, students will be able to match their interests with an organization. Within two hours, students can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other teens who have volunteered for the organization. Most of the organizations that participated last year are expected to return.

APRIL 2016 | Our City Pembroke Pines

Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest Returns Community News

By Debby Teich

I

f you have a great yard, now is the time to enter it in the 4th Annual Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. The contest, which is open to all homeowners/multi-family owners, promotes quality landscaping within Pembroke Pines. It also honors Natalie Belmonte who tragically lost her life in 2011. She was a longtime resident of the Pembroke Pines, who loved nature and butterflies. The deadline for applications is April 14. Five winners will be selected, including one from each of the four City Commission Districts and one at large. The Landscape Advisory Board will judge the yards in April. The winning residents will receive their awards at the May Commission meeting, in the spirit of Mother’s Day and to honor Natalie Belmonte during her birthday month. The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award. The five components are as follows: ▸▸ Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of Some of the 2015 winners

plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. ▸▸ Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with the use of the property. ▸▸ Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? ▸▸ Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. ▸▸ Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Last year’s winners were: Eddie N. Linares, Joseph M. Zappia, and the Pembroke Pines Charter School - East Campus Art in Bloom garden. The winners received granite plaques to display in their yards, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Mayor. Carrie Moore plans to enter her yard this year. “I have been working hard to get my yard ready for the contest,” said Moore. “It is important for all property owners to take good care of their yards to make the neighborhood look nice.” For information and an application, visit www. ppines.com.

Sort-A-Thon Celebrates Feeding South Florida’s 35th birthday By Debby Teich

I

t is estimated that more than 785,000 South Florida residents, including more than 280,000 children, aren’t sure where their next meal will come from. Alleviating hunger is a critical first step in helping people to achieve economic stability, ultimately leading to long-term success. A group of Feeding South Florida (FSF) volunteers recently met at the FSF main warehouse in Pembroke Pines to do their part to help stamp out hunger. They participated in the organization’s first-ever 35-hour Sort-A-Thon to celebrate FSF’s 35th birthday. There were approximately 1,200 volunteers, including FSF President and CEO Paco Vélez, FSF board members and many from Bank of America. They rolled up their sleeves to sort through thousands of food donations and helped load trucks that distributed meals for the hungry. Throughout the 35 hours, they sorted 350,000 pounds of food (291,666 meals). Bank of America also announced the South Florida results from its 2015 Give A Meal campaign, during which the Bank of America Charitable Foundation gave $2 for every $1

donated to Feeding South Florida (up to $75,000 total and up to $1,000 per donation). They presented Feeding South Florida with a $38,895 check, which will assist FSF in providing 233,370 meals for food insecure individuals and families in the South Florida community, where every $1 donated equals six meals. Feeding South Florida’s mission is to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through innovative programming and education. FSF is the sole Feeding America food bank in South Florida, and the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in the region, serving 25 percent of the state’s food insecure population. Through a local network of approximately 350 nonprofit partner agencies, FSF distributes almost 40 million pounds of food annually, serving 785,040 individuals in need of food assistance, including 280,630 children and 150,000 older adults. Taste of Pines Is a Success Community news

By Debby Teich

H

osted by the City of Pembroke Pines, the 7th Annual Taste of Pines was a huge success and all for a good cause. Proceeds from the event benefited the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System, which allows Pembroke Pines children to begin their education in a Pembroke Pines Charter elementary school, study in a regional library, graduate from the high school, and continue their education at Broward College and/or Florida International University. “Our Taste of Pines event gets better every year,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “The evening combined the generosity of our local restaurants and food stores to benefit our award-winning Pembroke Pines Charter School System.”

Taste of Pines was held at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The crowd enjoyed the Latin beat of Tito Puente, Jr., delicious food from 43 local restaurateurs and libations. Organizers from the Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department brought back the popular Beer Garden and Wall of Wines. They also added a VIP section, which provided an intimate club like atmosphere,

private entrance, preferred parking, private lounge area, extended event hours, meet and greet with Tito Puente Jr., an hour open bar, and more. “The new VIP Lounge was a hit and sold out quickly,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines and Chair of the Taste of Pines event. “We are thinking of ways to enhance next year’s event.”

ore than 1,000 treasure seekers are expected to attend the City of Pembroke Pines Community Center Antiques and Collectibles Show, benefiting the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. It will be held on April 16, from 9am to 4pm, and April 17, from 10am to 4pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue. “People come to this show to find the game they played as a child, the juice glasses their greatgrandma set the table with, or vintage clothing to update their wardrobe,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. This is the 13th year of the antique show, which has grown throughout the years. It is currently offered

twice a year, in April and October. In 2017, it will be offered in March and October. The April show will be the 25th one. It will bring together more than 50 dealers from across the country that will display their items in a clean, air conditioned room. They will be selling a treasure trove of quality antiques and collectibles including depression glass, vintage postcards, tools, linens, silver, toys, jewelry, small furniture, books, lamps, quilts, coins, military, pottery, clocks, art and much more. Plant and orchid dealers will be at the show on both days and an antique appraiser will be available on Sunday for a fee of $3 per item. Emilio’s Café will also be open for homemade meals, snacks and refreshments. Pembroke Pines resident Ellen Baker is looking forward to the show. “It is so much fun to browse through all of the collectibles,” said Baker. “I have filled my home with so many items from the show. Last year, I purchased a piece of art that turned out to be worth much more than I paid.”

Southwest Regional Library Offers More Than Just Books Community News

By Debby Teich

T

he Southwest Regional Library offers many ways for kids to stay busy all year long. There are on-going programs, as well as a variety of special events. Most of them are free. ▸▸ Storybook Adventures – The pre-school program, for ages 3-5, meets every Tuesday, from 10:30am-11am. This literacy program is intended to help children transition to independence in a group setting without their families. It incorporates stories, music, activities and crafts. Miss Joyce, children’s librarian, carefully plans programs that target the developmental stages of 3-5 year olds. Though focused on literacy skills, the program also incorporates fine and gross motor skills, language development, rhythm, math, science and social skills. ▸▸ Learning & Growing Together – The early literacy story time for toddlers, ages 12-36 months, meets twice every Thursday, from 10:30am-11am and 11:15am-11:45am. With a strong early literacy focus, it is designed to strengthen parents’ skills as their child’s first teacher. Using creative activities, stories, songs and movement, caregivers learn the six pre-reading skills that little ones need for a successful school experience - print motivation and awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, narrative and vocabulary skills. Parents learn techniques they can use

at home between the weekly sessions and the children have fun with Early Learning Librarian Miss Laura. ▸▸ Wags & Tales – The program gives young readers an opportunity to read aloud with one of the pet therapy dogs that visit on the second and fourth Saturdays every month, from 10:30am–11:30am. The children build confidence in reading and are motivated as they interact with the gentle dogs. Call to make an appointment on the next scheduled Saturday with Lola the Rottweiler or Buddy the Beagle. ▸▸ Youth Chess Club – The club meets on the first and third Saturday of each month. It is for children, ages 6-18, from beginners through advanced players. They can learn the game or just play for fun. Chess sets are provided. Registration required. ▸▸ 11th Annual Mother’s Day Tea Party – On May 7, don’t miss the Mother’s Day Tea Party, from 10:30am–12noon, for 1-6 year olds and their families. There will be songs, treats and a special performance for mommies, daddies and other special adults in your children’s lives. Come dressed in your best and bring a camera for family photo opportunities. Light refreshments will be served. No registration is needed for the free event.

In May, the complete calendar of all of the summer activities at Broward County Libraries will available, including many programs at Southwest Regional. Look for it online at www.Broward.org/ Library/EventsClasses, or pick one up at the Youth Services desk in mid-May. A special preview of the program calendar will be available at the Mother’s Day Tea Party. The Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street. For information on any of these programs, call the Youth Services desk at 954-357-6733, or send an email to Lamorrison@broward.org.

Inspiring Individual

Children’s Home Society of Florida to Honor Pembroke Pines Resident By Debby Teich

Lucille DeAngelo

A

pproximately 20,000 Florida children live in uncertainty, because it’s too dangerous at home. For 28 years, Lucille DeAngelo of Pembroke Pines has been dedicated to helping some of these children through the Children’s Home Society of Florida. This month, DeAngelo will receive the organizations highest honor, the 2016 R. David and I. Lorraine Thomas Child Advocate of the Year award.

The accolade is presented to individuals and groups who have made an exceptional contribution toward the well-being of children. “Lucille has proven herself to be a true advocate for our community’s most vulnerable, the children,” said Julie Schneider, executive director of Children’s Home Society of Florida. “We are beyond grateful for her dedication to our organization and are honored, absolutely honored, to present her our 2016 award.” DeAngelo has been a friend of Children’s Home Society of Florida since 1988. She recognized the great need for children in Broward County to have a home that was filled with love and has worked tirelessly to ensure they were given one. Following a successful fundraising campaign including a black-tie event, the I. Lorraine Thomas Children’s Home and Family Support Center opened its doors in 1992 and continues to be a loving place for children and families in Broward County today. “Dave and Lorraine Thomas and Pam Masters got me involved,” said DeAngelo, who is co-founder/ second-time president of the East Broward Auxiliary

and long-time member of the Board of Directors. “I am thrilled that they showed me the need, so I could get involved and help the community’s children. I have given to Children’s Home Society of Florida, but they have also given to me by fulfilling an empty spot in my life. I will forever be there for them. I am so honored and humbled by this award.” The auxiliary has approximately 100 members that meet monthly at Café Vico. They volunteer at the emergency home and host special events to raise money and spread good will. “Most of the members are working men and women with giving hearts,” said DeAngelo. “They lend a helping hand and work together to make a better tomorrow for today’s children.” The Lorraine Thomas Children’s Home and Support Center provides emergency residential placement for children, ages 0-12, who have been removed from their homes by the Department of Children and Families due to an allegation of neglect, abuse and/or abandonment. As the children learn how to cope with their pasts, counselors teach them healthy ways to express their emotions. When they leave the Center, they’re able to live in family settings. The Lorraine Thomas Children’s Home and Support Center is located at 401 NE 4th Street in Fort Lauderdale. For information, visit www.chsfl.org.

West Broward High School Cheerleaders Are 11th in the Nation By Debby Teich

ince West Broward High School opened in 2009, the school’s cheerleaders have been making their way to the top. Each year, the playing field becomes more competitive and the team has had to push harder to succeed. Stunts require more endurance and pyramids become more complex. The team’s accolades have included: 7th in the State (2009), 2nd State Runner Up (2010), State Champions (2101, 2012, 2013), 4th in the State (2014) and 7th at Nationals (2015). This year, WBHS cheerleaders advanced to their highest level, placing 3rd in the state and 11th in the nation. Senior Allyson House has been cheering since her freshman year of high school. She is passionate about the sport. “No words can describe how it feels to hit a perfect routine on the mat after all the hard work you and your team have put in,” said House, who

is co-captain. “Making it to Nationals was an unbelievable feeling. This season my team accomplished more than any of us thought possible. The memories we shared will truly last a lifetime and I am so grateful to have shared the mat with such an amazing group of people. Having the privilege to lead my team for two seasons is something I’ll never forget.” Senior Kayla Kuhns has been cheering since she was 12 years old. She is a UCA All American Cheerleader and was excited to make it to Nationals her senior year. “This season has been the best I’ve had in all my years of cheering,” said Kuhns, who is co-captain. “The team was closer than ever and we had great accomplishments that showed how good we were as a team. I feel a thrill knowing that all our hard work throughout the season paid off. I love the friendships that are created and the family that the team becomes.” Senior Jewell Mallard has been cheering for sideline football and competitive cheer since 4th grade. “Making it to Nationals was like Christmas morning when you were a little kid,” said Mallard, who is co-captain. “It was pure joy and excitement. Wining our trophy at Nationals was all the hard work paying off. The best part of cheerleading is the moment I walk out onto the mat or football field. As a cheerleader, that ability to motivate the crowd is just awesome!”

PPCS - Central Campus Students Learn About Florida’s Water Issues

School News

By Debby Teich

O

ver 200 4th and 5th grade students from the Pembroke Pines Charter Central Campus recently participated in a unique lesson that explored some of the environmental issues facing Florida and its water. They climbed aboard WaterVentures’ Florida Learning Lab, a 53-foot semitrailer that has been customized with museum-quality, inquiry-based learning activities. “WaterVentures provided our students a greater understanding of the delicate issues facing the Florida watershed,” said Kelly Hughes, science teacher at the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School and science specialist for the Central Campus. “The exhibits focus on water education and increasing awareness of how water moves through our lives.” Each portion of the truck is aligned to the fourth and fifth grade lessons on Florida’s resources, the water cycle, weather, and conservation. The information is presented using hands-on labs that would be too big and complex to set up in a classroom environment. The activity center features an AV screen for educational presentations and hands-on student stations, including watershed tables, a relief map of Florida’s water features, recycling exhibits, product distribution bins and a demonstration table. Students were taught by two veteran teachers who hold degrees in Environmental and Aquatic Science. “My hope is our students reached a deeper appreciation and respect of our very sensitive ecosystem,” said Hughes.

PPCHS Presents Disney’s High School Musical By Debby Teich

O

n April 14 and 15, the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Drama Department presents the production of Disney’s High School Musical - One Act Edition, at the Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark.“The show has lots of audience appeal,” said Andrea R. Kidd, Drama Director. “It is many of the students’ favorite show from growing up.” In the musical, the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends and family, while balancing their classes and extra-curricular activities. They realize that they can be anything their hearts desire when they are all in it together. Scenes take place throughout the school, such as in the hallways, auditorium, locker room and classrooms. There are 65 cast members in the show, including 35 high school students and a group of 30 students from Academic Village Middle School. The students have been rehearsing daily since early February. The lead roles of Troy and Gabriela are played by Matias De La Flor, a senior, and Nicole Gomez, a junior. “The show is something that has followed you since your childhood,” said De La Flor. “Seeing it live on stage will be a memorable highlight of your high school years.” There are approximately 120 students in the school’s drama program, which

consists of classes and a Drama club that is open to all students of interest. Over four years, students receive training in acting, theatre history, improvisation, mime and movement, voice and diction, playwriting and performances. “The Drama program allows students the opportunity to have fun, be creative and join a ‘theatre family’ while in high school,” said Kidd. Every year, drama students participate in Winter Fantasy, along with students in dance, music and art. The Drama department also presents a main stage show in the spring. Last year’s play was Neil Simon’s Fools. Each year, many students go on to study theatre in college and several receive scholarships. This year, three seniors - Matias De La Flor, Maycee Smith and Stephanie Casitllo received theatre scholarships to attend college in the fall. The Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts is located at the River of Grass ArtsPark, 17189 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. Tickets are $5 per person in advance and are on sale at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Administration Office. A limited number of tickets will be available the night of the performance for $8pp. For information, call 954-538-3700.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:

Estate Planning for Your Unique Family BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

E

state planning is not just about documents. It’s not about a filling out a form, or completing a checklist. And contrary to some advertising you may have seen, it’s not a do-it yourself project. The planning process requires a thoughtful discussion with an attorney who specializes in estate planning to identify areas of concern and vulnerability, followed by the design and implementation of a plan with customized documents to address your unique needs and concerns. The plan can be very simple or more complex, depending on one’s particular situation. Consider the following: It’s not just about the stuff. You may assume an estate plan is about leaving an inheritance to your loved ones. Often the focus quickly shifts from “how much” to “when” and “how.” Perhaps you have a child with a tendency to overspend. You may also fear leaving a generous inheritance to your children might discourage them from working. Have you even considered that your spouse may someday remarry, and your assets eventually pass to the new spouse’s family? A full discussion of your estate plan should address all of your concerns, even those that you have never before shared with others. It’s not just about after you are gone. What about the possibility of you or your spouse becoming disabled? Who will oversee your property or handle your business affairs? How is disability determined, and by whom? The answers to these questions should be part of your plan. Keep in mind that if you become disabled without any estate planning, the court will step in to appoint a guardian to manage your financial affairs, and see to your personal and medical care. This would be an expensive and for most, a scary development. What about doctors, insurance, and government resources? Whom would you select to have access to your health information or provide treating physicians with instructions should you not be able to? Shouldn’t someone be authorized to interact with insurance companies, Social Security, Medicare, the IRS or Veterans Administration on your behalf? A comprehensive estate plan should provide for all of this. What if I do nothing? Unfortunately, this happens quite frequently. Many people think about estate planning, but never get around to it. Should you die without a plan, your assets will go to your closest relatives under your state’s intestate succession laws, as determined by the probate court. The only factors involved in the distribution of assets are whether or not you have a spouse, children, living parents, or other close relatives when you die. Moreover, if you leave behind minor children, their guardian will have access to your assets. It is important to remember that the true value of consulting with an estate planning attorney is the advice and guidance given. Creating documents without expert advice can prove to be very dangerous. Making poor decisions now, or not updating an old plan, may leave a mess for your family to deal with. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a complimentary estate-planning consultation with Mr. Iden, please contact Iden Law Offices at (954)885-0085.

I

n a Dissolution of Marriage, the couple’s finances are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances, determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. Not everyone, however, is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. Are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support, each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses. Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows: ▸▸ Salary or wages ▸▸ Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments ▸▸ Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts (“Business income” means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income.) ▸▸ Disability benefits ▸▸ All workers’ compensation benefits and settlements ▸▸ Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation ▸▸ Pension, retirement, or annuity payments ▸▸ Social security benefits ▸▸ Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court ▸▸ Interest and dividends ▸▸ Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income ▸▸ Income from royalties, trusts, or estates ▸▸ Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses ▸▸ Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances, for instance, would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is “yes” and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course, if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions than it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. In addition, a person cannot voluntarily reduce his/her income by changing jobs and expect to be able to either reduce or increase a child support or alimony obligation. If someone is “underemployed,” additional income may be imputed by the courts. Of course, sometimes a reduction in income can occur due to circumstances beyond the individual’s control. Once again, if you have any questions I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

S

ince June 2013, when the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure cases are brought to trial. Previously, it would take anywhere between eighteen months to two years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, how can you combat against “light speed” foreclosures? The most important tool you can use to defend against our court’s quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclosure defense attorney to guide you through the minefield of valid defenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t settle for anything less than an initial face-to-face meeting with the attorney. Let’s face it. If they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “too busy” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the attorney has plenty of litigation and trial experience (at least fifteen years), and that the attorney regularly practices in the county where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the attorney has a proven track record of outstanding results and satisfied clients. Ask the attorney to refer you to at least three satisfied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the attorney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the office.

Another critical tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law firm you hire to defend your case has established loan modification and consumer bankruptcy departments. This will give you the very best opportunity to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure case are not accepted by the court, you can process a loan modification, reinstatement, or short payoff of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you can file a consumer bankruptcy and attempt to complete the modification within the bankruptcy proceeding. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients, so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops. CAUSES: Flatfeet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid, psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports. SIGNS: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Usually associated with knockknees and abnormal shoe wear. RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is common with aging. TREATMENT: Identifying the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible. Proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity. Physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. Stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility. Surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2014 was liposuction. Approximately 350,000 liposuction procedures were performed last year in the United States according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There is an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, but there comes a time when despite diet and exercise unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of them have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs with 86% of the patients treated noticing a visible fat reduction with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now, including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. Fat removal with this device is now available for the inner and outer thighs, after receiving the FDA approval in April 2014. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess. The fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device, which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat, destroying the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. New Graduate Medical Education Program Will Attract Top-Notch Physicians to Broward

by Hobel Florido Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System

I

f you’re a healthcare consumer who is interested in seeing Broward become a resource for teaching and training the next generation of physicians, here’s important news: With the blessing of the South Broward Hospital District’s Board of Commissioners, Memorial Healthcare System will soon establish residency programs in physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine and pediatrics. Memorial received initial approval in August from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), effectively setting the system on a path to become a sponsoring teaching institution. The next step, which is in progress, is to submit program-specific applications for review and approval this spring, with the inaugural class of residents starting in July 2017. This is exciting for all of us at Memorial, but if you’re not a doctor, you may wonder – is it exciting for you, too? I’m happy to report that it is. A GME program at Memorial will confer many benefits on our community. First, of course, it will offer important learning and training opportunities for up-and-coming physicians. Completing residencies and fellowships is a requirement for obtaining board certification, now a prerequisite at many hospitals across the country. (In fact, at Memorial, nearly all medical

staff members are board-certified or board-eligible.) So Memorial’s GME program will attract and retain highly sought-after physicians to Broward County. And because physicians tend to remain in the communities in which they train, the GME program will add longterm energy and expertise to Memorial’s already impressive roster of clinicians – professionals who work hard every day to serve Broward County’s patients and families. Stanley Marks, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Memorial Healthcare System, concurs. “Having a Graduate Medical Education program at Memorial will help address future physician needs in our community, while supporting the development and growth of high-end clinical programs and improving patient access,” he says. “The program will bring us even more resources as we pursue our goal of improving population health.” The GME program will also build on the academic activities that Memorial already has underway – such as providing training to medical students from local universities and establishing the Office of Human Research, which supports clinical trials and other research throughout the system. In the years to come, the GME program and the Office of Human Research will complement one another, with research in oncology, pediatrics, cardiovascular medicine and other areas aligning themselves with proposed GME programs. I am proud that the Board has supported Memorial’s efforts to bring a highly desirable educational experience to residents here in Broward. Physicians who participate in the new GME program will thrive in Memorial’s culture of quality, service, safety and exceptional evidence-based care. They will learn many valuable lessons and gain the thoughtful insights and expertise they’ll need to become the best physicians they can be – the kind of physicians to whom you will feel confident entrusting your and your family’s health.

American Master Academy Educates the Mind, the Body and the Soul It’s Their Business

By Beverly Perkins

A

merican Master Academy provides a superior academic program in a nurturing Christian environment. Based on Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. The school teaches Biblical principles, moral values and leadership skills in order to equip each student for the future.

Recently, American Master Academy welcomed a new Head of School, Mrs. Maria Galasso in January of this year. Mrs. Galasso has a Master’s Degree in Education and has been in Christian education for over 15 years. She has served as an elementary and high school teacher, curriculum coordinator and principal, before prayerfully accepting her current position at AMA.

Give a brief description of your school.

At AMA, our goal is to provide a truly Christcentered education for our students 18 months to middle school grades. Our environment which develops and encourages academic excellence, spiritual growth, and core values provides a quality education for a lifelong love and desire for learning. Our focus is to foster a positive relationship between parent, school, and student with emphasis on core values and Biblical worldview in order for students to become productive citizens.

What makes your educational facility different from others? Our teachers are

humbled, nurturing and committed educators, who instill the love of learning in each student. We have small class sizes and the school building is secured with a buzzer entrance system. It is a small school community with the essentials to equip each student with high academics in a Christian family oriented environment.

Mrs. Galasso took the time to answer some commonly asked questions of those interested in sending their children to American Master Academy.

What’s your school’s key message to the community?

As parents, God gave us the privilege and the responsibility of raising our children. Our goal as parents is to shape the mind and character of our children by helping them develop the capacity for learning and building core values. Thankfully parents do not have to be alone in this task, at our school we seek to prepare each student to be responsible and loving citizens who are critical thinkers with a Biblical world-view.

What types of extracurricular and after school activities do you offer? We offer

extended care until 6:00 p.m. for all grades. We also offer an after-school enrichment program giving the students opportunities to learn and improve their skills in such activities as ballet, dancing, and sports. We offer after-school tutoring for our students with credentialed educators.

What final words would you like to say about AMA? We have been blessing the South

Broward community since August 2013, and our plans are to continue to offer quality Christian education in a safe nurturing environment.

What type of curriculum is taught? We pro-

vide a Biblically integrated educational program for 18 months to middle school grades. We offer a well-rounded curriculum that integrates faith and values into every aspect of our learning environment, offering students an opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential. We use a variety of publishers, mostly Christian, such as Abeka and Bob Jones Press.

In addition to a full slate of core courses in science, math, reading, writing, and history, the AMA curriculum includes enrichment classes in our elementary program such as music, Spanish, physical education, technology and military practices. Middle school students are challenged in the core subjects as well, but they also have the opportunity to select from electives courses such as art, study skills, computer applications, Spanish I and Spanish II, creative writing, and musical theater.
