Hurricane Season – A Time to be Prepared, Not Scared
I
f you’ve lived in South Florida for long enough, you’ve experienced your share of hurricane warnings, scares, and, unfortunately, storms. Last year, many of us boarded up our homes and prepared for the worst. We were lucky that Hurricane Matthew stayed just off the coast and spared us, but this year could be very different. Hurricane season officially lasts from June 1st until November 30th. According to the most recent forecasts, the 2017 Hurricane season should be about average, with a total of 11 named storms. Hurricane “season”, however, is not what causes billions of dollars of damage and threatens lives; it is that one big storm. There is little to no correlation between the number of severe storms in the Atlantic and the number of storms that reach landfall. We owe it to ourselves and to our families to make sure we are prepared. The Florida Department of Emergency Management recommends that every family prepare a hurricane kit and have an evacuation plan in place. You can visit www.floridadisaster.org/getaplan to create a personalized plan. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death.

others and fathers have their own special day. In Pembroke Pines, so do the children. On June 16, more than 1,000 children are expected to join in the fun at the 8th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. They will have an opportunity to eat lunch with the Mayor and visit participating businesses that will be offering them special deals. “This is one of the best events that our city has for kids,” said Francie Novo, Mayor’s Kids’ Day organizer and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “Don’t miss out on all the free fun. You can determine how much or how little you want to do this day. It’s all about being a resident and feeling like a VIP in our own city.” The free event is for children ages 15 and younger. Pre-registration is required. Residents can register at several locations throughout the city, including the Pines Recreation Center, Rose G. Price Park, Town Gate Park, and Pembroke Lakes Tennis Center. Kids will receive a special wristband that will entitle them to hunt for deals
and freebies from local businesses throughout the city. Some of the things they might find include free bowling, swimming, haircuts, ice cream, mini golf, cookies, breakfast, and more. Businesses will also offer discounts on purchases, food samples, raffles and more. From 12:30pm to 1:30pm, the Mayor will host a fun-filled lunch for the children at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School, 17189 Sheridan Street. They can challenge the Mayor in a City Trivia game for prizes. They can visit with fire and police personnel, as well as mascots from several of the sponsors. They can also try their luck in the BrightStar money machine, which will be filled with valuable prizes. The City will provide a free lunch and Publix will provide dessert. “Pembroke Pines is an awesome place to grow up,” said Novo. “Mayor Ortis wants everyone to know all that Pembroke Pines has to offer. Mayor’s Kids’ Day allows residents to explore their options without going out of the city.” For information, call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com.

JUNE 2017 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES
Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. ▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No pets, coolers, tents or handheld fireworks allowed. For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

Sundaes with the Bunny Was a Success COMMUNITY NEWS

K
ids had an opportunity to indulge in one of their favorite foods at Sundaes with the Bunny, held at the Carl Schechter SWFP Community Center. The annual event was a hopping success! The children enjoyed making their own sundaes with help from volunteers. They received an “egg-ceptionally” big scoop of ice cream and got to choose from a selection of toppings that included Oreos, gummy bears, jelly beans, marshmallow, chocolate chips and more. They also danced, played games and posed for photos with two life-sized bunnies. “This is one of our favorite events,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “The children have so much fun, our volunteers are so helpful, and Rob from Superstar Productions gets everyone involved. You can’t help but smile when you see children, parents, and grandparents on the dance floor moving to the hokey pokey and the chicken dance!” For information, visit www. ppines.com.

City of Pembroke Pines to Hold Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony for McCluskey Rainbow Park BY DEBBY TEICH
P
embroke Pines is already filled with a variety of parks. On June 6, at 10am, the City of Pembroke Pines will hold a Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony Jack McCluskey for one more. Located in the Rainbow Lakes section of Pembroke Pines, at 9201 NW 19th Street, the McCluskey Rainbow Park features eight outdoor-lighted racquetball courts, a shaded walking/jogging/bike path, and a covered tot lot/playground. Light refreshments will follow the Ribbon Cutting and Dedication ceremony. The park was named in honor of Jack McCluskey, a 48-year resident, former City Commissioner, and three-time Vice Mayor. McCluskey and his wife Gloria raised their family in the Pasadena Lakes section of Pembroke Pines, where he began his lifelong service to Pembroke Pines as a charter member (1969) and later became president of the Lakes Homeowners Association. He served on the boards of the South Broward Drainage District and the Broward League of Cities. He now serves as the City of Pembroke Pines Historian. “We are recognizing Jack for his dedicated and continuous service to the residents and employees of Pembroke Pines,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. Mary O’Connell visits a park in Pembroke Pines most weekends with her three children. “There are so many parks to choose from in Pembroke Pines,” O’Connell. “I feel so fortunate to live in a city with so much green space. I am excited that the City will be adding one more. I am glad that they named the park after Jack. He has done so much for the city and deserves the recognition.” For information, visit www.ppines.com or contact the Special Events Office at 954-392-2116.

Beat the Heat at the City of Pembroke Pines Summer Block Party SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
S
ummertime in South Florida is hot and families are always looking for a fun and inexpensive way to cool off. On June 16, Pembroke Pines residents are invited to beat the heat at the 1st Annual Block Party, held indoors at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, 301 N.W. 103rd Avenue. The party begins at 5:30pm. The deadline to purchase tickets is 12noon on June 7. Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor at the Center, came up with the idea for the first-time event. “I was reminiscing about neighborhood block parties in the summertime and thought that we could have one at the Center,” said Daniels. “Since it is indoors, the only thing that will be missing is the heat and mosquitoes! This evening is all about family and summer fun. There is no extra charge for the great memories families will create.” There will be something for everyone. The summer block party includes a buffet meal, games and dancing organized by the popular D.J. Mack. Dinner begins at 5:30pm and the Summer Block Party moves into full swing at 6:30pm. Guests are welcome to embrace the summer theme by wearing a favorite summer outfit, sunglasses and/or a hat! Tickets are $10pp for adults and $5pp for children ages 12 and younger. “Usually our dinner dances are for adults,” said Daniels. “This is the first ‘family friendly’ dinner dance. School is out, so bring the kids. Everyone is welcome at our Summer Block Party.” A popular rental venue for celebrations, seminars, special events year round, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus hosts daily

Panther Run Student Meets Police Chief
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
lex Gomez wants to be a police officer when he grows up. The third grade student at Panther Run Elementary recently had an opportunity to get some advice from the Pembroke Pines Chief of Police, Dan Giustino. Alex is in Mrs. Rivera’s specialized class. He had been doing well in school, so Panther Run’s principal, Elaine Saef, asked the Chief if he could send some police stickers and coloring books. “Alex loves his hometown of Pembroke Pines, especially those who work helping the community like firefighters and police officers,” said Saef. “Alex’s dream is to grow up and become a Pembroke Pines police officer. He wants to help people in need, save
people from bad guys, and drive a squad car wearing an official police uniform.” When Saef sent Chief Giustino the request, he decided to deliver the items in person so he could meet Alex. “It was awesome,” said Saef. “He was so excited.” Alex made the Chief a card and thanked him for being an officer. He received a bag of goodies from the Pembroke Pines Police Department. Saef was given a Police Department challenge coin. Last month, Alex received another surprise when he was named the school’s Pembroke Pines Police Student of the Month. “Alex cares a lot for his friends and teachers,” said Saef. “He is kind and curious. He loves to learn and be in school.”

KAPOW Volunteers Teach Students at Silver Palms Elementary
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
hroughout the school year, volunteers from Publix and Wells Fargo have been teaching students at Silver Palms Elementary about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. It is all part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). “Having someone from the business community talk to my students helps them make the connection between school and the real world,” said David W. Phillips, who teaches 4th grade gifted/high achievers at the school. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. They include hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. James Gooze, store manager at Publix in Cooper City, volunteered in Phillip’s class this year. This is the fourth year that he has volunteered for KAPOW. “Our kids need more community leaders to be involved in their growth and KAPOW does just that,” said Gooze. “The kids absolutely love the time we spend together. They get to hear about real life examples and we get a chance to reaffirm some of the lessons and experiences taught by Mr. Phillips. The kids that we work with now are our future leaders in the world and may even work at Publix one day.”

Juana R Pecoraro, Branch Manager/Assistant Vice-President, is one of three Wells Fargo employees that volunteer in Linda Barcz’s 5th grade gifted/highachieving class. Pecoraro has been volunteering for KAPOW for the last five years. “KAPOW helps us show the kids the outside working environment, what we call the real world,” said Percoraro. “It helps them to connect what they are doing now and what they will be doing in the future. It shows them how important everything is that they learn today, because they will be using it tomorrow.” Barcz says she is grateful to the volunteers. “The time and effort the volunteers put in to make this program successful is much appreciated by the teachers and students,” said Barcz. “It is important that the students hear firsthand about the challenges/rewards of holding down a job from a person who experiences these trials and tribulations on a daily basis.” Last month, the students visited Publix and Wells Fargo for the final lesson. KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida. For information about volunteering, or your school or business becoming a KAPOW partner, visit www.kapowlfs.wordpress.com or send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com.

hile more Americans are surviving cancer than ever before, more people are also getting cancer than ever before. Approximately 38.5 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer of any site at some point during their lifetime. This year, students at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – East campus did their part to raise awareness and funds to help fight the disease. “Throughout the year our students, families and staff members have been supportive,” said Alina Perry-Smith, PPCES East Campus Student Council Facilitator and Curriculum Specialist.” The school’s student council set of a goal of raising $2,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society. They held hat sales, bake sales, world cancer day and breast cancer awareness fundraisers. The highlight of their fundraising efforts, however, was their participation in the 19th Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines, a 13-hour overnight walk held at Walter C Young Middle School. At the event, students and staff set up a cookie booth and sold homemade cookies donated by Chartwells.
“There was great comradery fostered by this fundraiser,” said Perry-Smith. “We had great fun and enjoyed ourselves all the more knowing we were helping in the fight against cancer. Our students were especially proud to see their School Resource Officer, William Bucknam, participate by driving the famous Pembroke Pines Pink Police Car and leading the walkers around the track.” The East Campus students exceeded their goal and raised a total of $2,442. Following the Relay event, East Campus students met and discussed the inspiring stories they had heard about people fighting cancer. “Our students not only had fun, but learned to be empathetic and extend themselves to help others,” said Perry-Smith. “They also decided to Relay next year and will encourage the student body to become more involved.”

PPCES - East Campus Students Create Awareness During Earth Week
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
hroughout the year, students at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - East Campus learn about the impact a healthy environment has on the earth, its inhabitants, sea and sky. They are working hard to help keep our planet earth healthy by participating in beach clean-ups, planting native plants for butterflies and other pollinators, learning to the importance of recycling and composting, and much more. During Earth Week, they took their efforts to another level. “East Campus has a long history of participating and volunteering in programs to benefit the environment,” said Lisa Dizengoff, science facilitator on the campus. “Moved to action by what they see and understand, our students know they can make a difference. They are at an important age where developing environmental awareness translates into their wanting to take action and they develop empathy for the environment.” Dizengoff is teaching her students the impact people have had on the environment - both good and bad. She frequently sends students home with activity links to work on and share with their families. Some of the recent activities have included adopting a piece of the Earth from NASA and working on a coding project from the Made with Code website. Students also recite the Earth Planet Pledge, which is located on a classroom wall. “Our students learn how the actions of people, ranging from littering to acciden-
tal oil spills, can devastate the earth and its creatures,” said Dizengoff. During Earth Week the students participated in a variety of activities to improve their school and neighborhood environments. Some of them included: ▸▸ At the beginning of each day, students recited the Earth Planet Pledge - “I Pledge Allegiance to the Earth and all the life which it supports. One Planet, in our care, irreplaceable, with Sustenance and respect for all.” ▸▸ Students decorated paper grocery bags with Earth Day slogans, quotes and drawings for customers shopping at the nearby Publix. ▸▸ Students helped protect and restore the planet by planting native flowers, fruits and vegetables in the school’s Art in Bloom Garden. They used organic fertilizer to help nourish the earth and planted native flowers and shrubs to provide a food source, for birds, butterflies and bees. ▸▸ Every day before the conclusion of Science class, students picked up trash from the school grounds, parking areas and portions of Hiatus Road. As they picked up the trash, they held signs stating “Save the Planet! Protect the Earth!” and chanted, “Clean up. Pick Up. It’s all up to you.” “We hope that our students’ enthusiasm and concern for our planet results in their becoming lifetime stewards of our environment,” said Dizengoff.

Pines Lake Elementary Students Win Dairy Council’s Gridiron Challenge
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
I
n an effort to encourage healthier eating habits among kids, the Dairy Council of Florida recently hosted the 4th Annual Gridiron Cooking Challenge, a funfilled food competition for elementary and middle school students throughout Florida. Fifty recipes were submitted and students from Pines Lakes Elementary were declared the winners for their Bean Dip Egg Roll Cups. “Every year, we look forward to reviewing the new and creative ways students include dairy in their recipes,” said Michele Cooper, CEO of Florida Dairy Farmers. “The Gridiron Cooking Challenge is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate the versatility and nutritional value of dairy products, as we continue to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.” Elementary and middle school students, in groups of four, were encouraged to create and submit an original recipe that featured dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. The recipes were scored based on criteria including: enhancement of recipe with dairy products, use of healthy ingredients, clearness and accuracy of recipe, appearance of prepared food, and originality/creativity. This is the first time that Pines Lakes has participated in the competition. “Our team wanted something healthy, kid friendly, easy to eat, tasty and unique,” said Carlene WolfeYoloye, school counselor, who led the Pines Lakes team along with Julissa Candelaria and Erika Netter. “The bean dip egg roll cup consists of freshly made guacamole, low sodium black beans, Greek yogurt,
reduced fat Colby cheese, tomato salsa and freshly diced seasoning.” The top four teams, which included Pines Lakes, were invited to compete for the grand prize at the Gridiron Cooking Challenge at the Dolphins training facility in Davie. The students had to cook their recipe on-site in less than 60 minutes. Their creations were judged by a select group of distinguished professionals, including NFL players, Florida Dairy Farmers, Fuel Up to Play 60 student ambassadors and health professionals. “The Dairy Challenge contest taught our students about vegetables that they may or may not have experienced,” said Wolfe-Yoloye. “It also taught our students about healthy ingredients, healthy recipes and healthy cooking, while incorporating mathematics for measurements, trial and era, team work, determination, hard work and sportsmanship.” Each of the students on the team - Mia Netter, Leah Neira, Angelica Noboa and Isabella Suarez - won a mini iPad and a Publix Aprons Cooking School class. Wolfe-Yoloye says the school definitely plans to participate again next year.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 20 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Adriana and Kelli – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Adriana or Kelli for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. nother hurricane season is upon us. Now through November 30, we should all be vigilant and prepared for any possible storms. The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be less active than a year ago; however, it only takes one storm to cause damage. A total of 12 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes are expected this season. Please take the time to prepare now. Although South Florida has not experienced a major hurricane since 2005 with Wilma, we should never be complacent in our preparations. It’s important to take into account all hazardous scenarios. Have a plan, make arrangements and start taking care of any landscaping issues now. The City of Pembroke Pines Emergency Management Team has developed a plan of action that deals with situations before, during, and after a hurricane or storm. So, should the City encounter a direct impact from a hurricane, the goal is to quickly stabilize the situation and provide immediate assistance to residents and businesses. You can always get up to date information on the City of Pembroke Pines’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines. We will play a critical role in ensuring that correct and timely information is shared with residents. The City’s website at www.ppines.com also shares important information about preparation and what to do right before, during and after a storm. I’d like to congratulate the winners of the Great Yard Awards Contest. We will be honoring the winners at the June 7 Commission Meeting. They are: Linda Schainberg from District 1; Cathy and John Whitt from District 2; Erno Rosa and Mary Zappia from District 3; the Secret Garden @ Century Village from District 4; and Joseph Zappia from the District At Large. Their yards are magnificent. And, I’d also like to take a moment to humbly brag that Pembroke Pines, according to a new WalletHub report, has ranked No. 3 on WalletHub’s “2017 Best Cities for Hispanic Entrepreneurs.” The survey compared the 150 largest U.S. cities across 21 key metrics, including Hispanic entrepreneurship rate, Hispanic income growth and share of Hispanic-owned businesses. Again, during this hurricane season, I urge you to not wait for a storm to be upon us - be vigilant and prepare for any hurricane emergencies. And please stay safe this summer. As always, please feel free to contact me at 954-450-1020 or fortis@ppines.com.

Can Mediation Save Your Relationship? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT CERTIFIED COUNTY COURT AND FAMILY LAW MEDIATOR
W
hen a marriage is ending, the emotions are high. This makes it difficult to reach an agreement on how to divide property and debts. Things get more complicated when the couple separating are parents and also need to negotiate and agree on parenting matters. Mediation is a quick and inexpensive way to get a divorce without the many pitfalls of facing it on your own. Divorces can get expensive. In an effort to save money, parties often attempt to avoid attorneys and do the divorce on their own. This can get complicated and expensive down the line when children are involved. Mediation can provide divorce without launching war on the parent with a contentious “drag you through the mud” divorce. In fact, many divorce professional feel that mediation before filing can save the relationship between the parents by avoiding the animosity inherent in litigation. As part of the divorce, the judge will require a parenting plan to be completed and submitted as part of the court record. In the future, during a disagreement on a matter with the children, the parenting plan, when done properly, can save the parents and particularly the children a great deal of grief. Additionally, a well-drafted and detailed parenting plan can save the parents from thousands of dollars down the line.
The majority of post divorce litigation is regarding this one document. At the time of the divorce, without guidance, the parties prepare a vague and often inconsistent parenting plan form obtained online. However, as soon as the time-sharing begins, it becomes obvious that issues will arise since there are little to no specifics. During the mediation process, the Mediator, which is a neutral third party, can guide the parents on the specific information that needs to be included in the parenting plan. Although the Mediator is often times an experienced family law attorney, the Mediator is not representing either party in the divorce and does not provide legal advice. However, the Mediator is there to serve the interest of both parties and most importantly the children. The cost of the Mediator is split the parties and therefore significantly reduce expenses. The Mediator will sit with both parents and address all the specifics of time-sharing from the day-to-day to how holidays will be split. A good Mediator will look to include specific locations where exchanges will take place including times and alternate options if things don’t go as planned. Additionally, the parenting plan, when well drafted, will discuss school issues, extra-curricular activities and even child care options. May Porraspita is an attorney and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law and County Court Mediator. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other questions or concern, please call our office at 800-492-5455. Hablamos Espanol.

The Process of Hiring an Attorney BY EVAN BARON
I
am quite aware that the last thing most people would ever want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So how does someone decide if they need an attorney and, if so, who should they hire? I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results.

If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees. In family law, matter’s fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
Shoulder Injuries Treated with Arthroscopy Heal Faster with Less Pain New surgical techniques and better pain management enable easier recovery
Vani Sabesan, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon
Remember Operation, an electronic board game in which one wayward movement causes other body parts to spasm and a loud buzzer to sound?
Just like in the board game, an injured rotator cuff can wreak havoc with other body parts – and every day activities like writing and eating – because it’s the rotator cuff that allows us to lift and rotate the arm. The rotator cuff is composed of four muscles plus attached tendons and other tissue in the shoulder. It holds the arm in the joint and helps attach the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) to the elbow, neck and torso. Rotator cuff tendons can tear from age, overuse, traumatic injury, or a fall. When it is injured, even reaching for a book can be painful, and a tennis match or golf outing would be nearly impossible. Understandably, shoulder injuries used to be among the most dreaded by weekend warriors and professional athletes alike. In fact, a rotator cuff injury was often a career-ending incident in sports. “Shoulder patients can experience much quicker recovery and much less pain using
the arthroscopic techniques developed in recent years,” said Vani Sabesan, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the upper extremities. “Today, my patients return to their preferred activities quickly.”
“Prior to arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair required months of post-operative rehabilitation and many patients avoided the surgery,” said Dr. Sabesan. “Using arthroscopy, we can help our patients return to a fuller life without constant pain.”
Instead of a large incision circumventing the shoulder, Dr. Sabesan uses an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny camera at the tip, to examine and repair the tissues in the joint. Recovery is quicker, and less painful when compared to an open procedure.
Arthroscopy can treat other ailments including shoulder instability or dislocation, torn biceps tendon, bone spur, inflammation or damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder impingement syndrome, and arthritis of the collarbone. Surgeons also use arthroscopes to treat knees, hips, ankles, elbows and wrists.
Using arthroscopy also minimizes swelling, and allows patients to begin their postoperative rehabilitation sooner. In the last few years, other innovations have made the recovery process easier, including surgical improvements and better post-operative pain management. According to Dr. Sabesan, who is a team physician for the Florida Panthers, sutures today use new materials that do not require intra-operative knots. Overall, the procedures are less abrasive to the tissue. New, long-acting pain medications used following surgery last for 72 to 96 hours. Often patients need little or no pain medication after their initial recovery due to the new techniques.
A painful shoulder condition or injury can impede writing, eating, dressing, hair brushing, and other activities of daily living. With newer techniques and appropriate rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery can fully restore movement in the shoulder. Consult with a board-certified subspecialty orthopaedic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for arthroscopic surgery. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Sabesan, call 877.287.2963. The Best Approach to Plastic Surgery Is Moderation ASK THE EXPERT

oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community. The “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants or oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Habitual Toe Walkers
A
t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months, the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause of the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases is a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers is necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary. Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active. Casts are applied every ten to 14 days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. The casts are applied one leg at a time to allow for the activity level needed for successful treatment. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility. In rare cases, the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm. Carlo A. World of Knowledge Learning Center (AWOK) is one of the single largest VPK providers in Broward County. The Center offers an accelerated learning program where young children can think, explore and create through age appropriate activities created specifically for the school. Elizabeth Gonzalez, owner/director, answered some commonly asked questions about the Center.
Describe your business. AWOK is recognized as one of the top early
learning centers in Broward County. We provide excellence in early childcare. Our creative ways of teaching through music enable the young learners to obtain new concepts and reach for higher goals, while singing, dancing and having fun. When did you open? We just celebrated 13 years in the community. What ages do you serve? We serve six months to 1st grade. What distinguishes your school from your competitors? Our curriculum was designed for our school. We expose children to higher learning skills in a fun and creative way, incorporating multicultural awareness in all of our lessons. Our school is diverse. Children with little or no knowledge of the English language speak and read English in a few months. Is your method successful? Yes. 95% of our VPK students read before they enter kindergarten. Our first grade graduates are placed in gifted and high achiever programs. Teachers and principals from local schools compliment our students, because they are well prepared with social and academic skills.
JUNE 2017 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES
Does the school have a gold seal?
Yes. The school has state gold seal recognition. It is nationally accredited by A.P.P.L.E. and has received an A+ rating each year since the inception of VPK program. AWOK educates close to 100 VPK students each year with proven and successful kindergarten readiness skills and scores. In 2014, AWOK was recognized as one of the top five schools in Florida.
How do you stimulate the children?
Research shows that 90% of the brain develops in the first five years of life. Our goal is to stimulate children in a positive and engaging way and introduce them to new concepts which will help develop a strong foundation for future learning. All children learn in different styles, so we present our concepts in multiple ways so every child is able to learn at their pace. Do you offer summer camp? CAMP WOK is a summer camp for students ages 1-8. It is an educational camp with exiting daily activities, field trips and water days in our own swimming pool. We incorporate educational time throughout the day to assist the children in retaining skills previously learned. We will offer summer camp in our two locations - Pembroke Pines and Davie. What Is A Revocable Living Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
A
revocable living trust is the foundation of the modern estate plan. Properly drafted, it offers complete asset control during your lifetime and provides for you and your loved ones in the event of incapacity. Upon death, it allows you to pass your assets to loved ones without the costs, delays, and publicity associated with probate administration. In order to understand the benefits of a revocable living trust, we must contrast it with a will. Basically, a will is a testamentary document which only takes effect upon your death. Administration of your will generally requires supervision by the probate court. Because of case backloads and court staff shortages, we are finding that this process can take up to 18 months to complete. Keep in mind that until the process is complete, no assets can be distributed or property sold without the permission of the court. On the other hand, a revocable living trust is effective at the moment it is signed and assets are transferred to it. Both a will and a revocable living trust provide instructions for the distribution of your assets upon your death. Unlike a will, a revocable living trust also directs the management of your assets during your life and, if properly funded, avoids the need for probate administration at your death. Should you become incapacitated, your “Successor Trustee” will simply continue to manage your assets without court intervention or supervision, and continue to do so after your death. Even if you have created a revocable living trust, you should still have a special kind of backup will, called a “pour-over will.” This document provides instructions for anything you own at death that was not transferred into your trust, stating that it gets “poured over” into your trust. This ensures that the instructions in your trust will ultimately control distributions to your loved ones. It is important to repeat that by transferring assets to your revocable living trust, you maintain control of those assets during your life and effectively avoid probate administration after your death. All of your assets will be distributed according to the instructions you leave in your revocable living trust. Although a trust settlement process is still necessary, it does not involve the time, delay, and expense of probate administration. Trust settlement remains private and does not become part of the public record. A properly drafted revocable living trust should contain all provisions required for the management of your assets and for ultimate distribution after your death. A complete estate plan design should also include a pour-over will, a durable power of attorney, a certification and affidavit of trust, a health care power of attorney, a living will and a HIPPA release. Next month we will visit some of the specific benefits of creating a revocable living trust. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
