The Other November Day to Give Thanks
M
ost Americans gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks and enjoy a wonderful meal. This great tradition dates back to pilgrims and Native Americans eating wild turkey in New England, or so the story goes. There is another day in November, however, when we should all give thanks as well. On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. It is the day when we recognize the men and women who have risked life and limb to protect us, and our way of life. On Veteran’s Day, I think of true American Heroes, like Pembroke Pines native Patrick Xavier, Jr., a Marine who gallantly gave his life for his country. I also think of the countless Lance Corporals and Specialists, Sailors and Airmen, who we rarely read about. These faceless heroes silently labor away, frequently at risk, yet are seldom recognized. They don’t ask for much. Each one of them felt a calling to volunteer; some because they wanted to prove something to themselves; others, because of a deep desire to “give back” to their country. Perhaps we should go out of our way on November 11th to do something nice for them. So, if you see a service member on that special day, buy him a drink, pick up the tab for her lunch, or simply say “thank you” or “Oorah!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it might be all that they need. Happy Thanksgiving, and to all those veterans out there, Thanks! Sincerely, Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

Imaginations Come Alive at the StoryBook Festival community news
By Debby Teich
M
any think of the library as a place to read a book in silence. On November 19, some of these books will come alive at the 15th Annual StoryBook Festival, which will be held from 10am to 4:30pm, at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Regional Library, located in the Pembroke Pines Academic Village. Hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines and Broward County Public Library, the free family event offers a day of music, dance, storytelling, storybook characters, children’s performances and more. The StoryBook Festival is presented by and funded through the Broward Public Library Foundation, in partnership with the City of Pembroke Pines. It is sponsored by Friends of Southwest Regional Library and several others. The first 1,000 children to arrive will receive a free book. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite storybook costumes and join the Storybook Parade. This year’s theme is “Into the Forest.” When children visit the Fantasy Forest, they can follow a path through the enchanted forest, where they will meet some of their favorite characters, such as Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Little Pigs, and Rumpelstiltskin. The enchantment of the forest will be spread throughout the library with entertainers and storytellers recreating these stories and bringing them to life. Headlining the event is the Green Golly Project’s “Will the Real Rumpelstiltskin Puleeze Stand Up,” written and performed by Keith Torgan & Barbara Siesel. There will be many other performances throughout the day, including “The Three Little Circus Pigs,” performed by Atlantic Coast Theatre; an interactive performance by Steve Gryb, known as the pied Piper of Percussion; Suzy Hammer as Mother Goose and more. Some of the other highlights of the festival include:
▸▸ Roam the Fantasy Forest, a magical place where children can interact with their favorite storybook characters. ▸▸ Get your face painted for free. ▸▸ Swap tales at the “Swappin’ Ground” area, where children can tell their own stories. ▸▸ Bring cameras to take pictures at the “official” StoryBook Photo Spots. ▸▸ Indulge in tasty treats from the food trucks. The Southwest Regional Library is located at the Pembroke Pines Academic Village, 16835 Sheridan Street. For more information, call 954-357-6580.
▸▸ Join the StoryBook Parade, along with a large cast of storybook characters. ▸▸ Watch live children’s performances on stage. ▸▸ Get creative in the arts and crafts tent.
City of Pembroke Pines to Honor Veterans at Ceremony By Debby Teich

n November 11, hundreds will gather at City Center, 10300 Pines Blvd, for the City of Pembroke Pines Veterans Day Ceremony, to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Military. Audience members will include veterans from WWII, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Operation Urgent Fury (Granada), Operation Just Cause (Panama), the Wars on Terror and Iraqi Freedom and more. The free event, which is open to the community, begins at 12noon. “Our Annual Veterans Day Ceremony demonstrates the appreciation we in Pembroke Pines have for the service of countless brave American men and women, living or deceased, who have served our great county as a member of the United States military,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. The ceremony will include the presentation of colors by the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guard, guest speakers from the United States Southern Command, patriotic music played by students from the Pembroke Pines Charter School West Campus Band and lunch for veterans and guests. Harvey Siegel attended the ceremony last year and plans to attend again this year. His father was a lieutenant in the Korean War. “It was a very moving ceremony last year,” said Siegel. “I particularly liked all of the patriotic music. My father died defending our country and I am proud to live in a City that recognizes and honors our veterans.” Commemorative bricks honoring United States military veterans and loved ones will be available for purchase. The bricks are installed at the base of the Pembroke Pines Veterans Memorial. Brick sizes include: 4” x 8” brick (three lines and a total of 20 characters per line for $50) or 8” x 8” brick (six lines and a total of 20 characters per line for $95). A memento duplicate “minibrick” is included in the fee. For information about memorial bricks, call 954-392-2116. For information about the Veterans Ceremony, call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com. 2015 Veterans Day Ceremony

argain hunters from near and far are expected to meet at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in an indoor, air conditioned room. The event will be held on November 5, from 8am4pm, and November 6, from 9am-3pm. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds will benefit senior programs. “This Flea Market and Bazaar is a collector’s and bargain hunter’s dream,” said Helen Daniels, Activities Division Supervisor. “Just in time for the holidays – find the perfect gift for everyone on your list, and help us provide more programs for our seniors!” There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, jewelry, record albums, baseball cards, tea pots, baby blankets and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the
doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it. Carol Himmel has attended for the past three years. “I am always searching for bargains on teapots and jewelry,” said Himmel. “I usually find both! It is nice to be able to attend a flea market in the cool indoors instead of outside in the heat.” The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year. It helps to raise funds for senior programs at the SWFP Community Center, which provides the community with a wide range of programs and activities that promote physical and mental stimulation, encourage socialization, cultural education and intellectual enrichment. PPTOPA Presents “Funny Girl” on Stage By Debby Teich
I
f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theatre at an affordable price. Through November 20, “Funny Girl” will be on stage for several performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. “We invite everyone to come see the show,” said Mina Mandel, executive vice-president. “The cast is fabulous and talented. It is the best Broadway value for your dollar.” The Broadway musical that catapulted Barbara Streisand to fame tells the true story of legendary comedian and vaudeville great Fanny Brice. Certain she’s destined for stardom, Brice fast-talks her way into show business. With humor and talent, the young girl, who “isn’t pretty,” defies the odds and becomes one of the greatest stars of her generation. Jule Styne and Bon Merrill wrote the music and lyrics, including great songs like “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “People” and “You are Woman, I am Man.” The PPTOPA production includes Director Jeffrey Bruce, Musical Director Bob Boyer, Megan Nagy (Fanny Brice), Nick Arnstein (Anton Simon), Erika Scotti (Mrs. Brice), and Eddie Ryan (Phillip

Santiago). PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents three shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 6,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $18 to $25. Upcoming shows include Stephen Schwartz Review for four shows on December 1, 2, 3 and 4 and She Loves Me, from February 24 to March 19, 2017. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

SWFP Community Center Hosts Annual Thanksgiving Drive community news
By Debby Teich
F
or millions of Americans, the Thanksgiving holiday is an opportunity to indulge in roasted turkey, buttery mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, while enjoying the company of friends and families. For those who are less fortunate, however, the holiday may take on a very different meaning. This month, the staff at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center will host the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to reach out to those in need of assistance. Through November 18, schools, clubs, organizations or individuals can donate nonperishable canned and/or boxed foods, checks, cash or grocery store gift cards. Organizers are hoping to provide 100 Thanksgiving baskets and meals to families in Pembroke Pines. “Throughout the years, the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, organized by the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, has assisted well over 1,000 people in the community who are need,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The donations we receive are a reflection of a generous community who understands the importance of helping others.”
At the 2015 Thanksgiving Food Drive, U.S. Army Unit #1218 Specialist Steven Smith and Sergeant Antineo Brewer helped load 103 Thanksgiving baskets for Pembroke Pines families.
Students at City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools and private schools have already started collecting items for the Thanksgiving baskets. Some of the items include: stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned yams, flaked potatoes, gravy, canned corn, green beans, fruit, and desserts. The SWFP Community Center purchases the turkeys, and pies. Once the school drives are complete, members of the Pembroke Pines Professional Fire Fighters Local #2292 will donate their time to assist with transporting bins and help collect food at various locations. Chartwells Food Services, who caters for the Pembroke Pines charter schools, also contributes. “On behalf of those who need a helping hand, we extend deep appreciation to those who support the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive,” said Shechter. “The generous contributions make it possible for families to enjoy this holiday.” Non-perishable items and food store gift cards can be dropped off at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines through November 16. For information, contact Diane Shawcross at 954-450-6888 or send an email to dshawcross@ppines.com.
Arts and Crafts Show Raises Record Funds for Empty Bowls Thanksgiving Food Drive By Debby Teich
T
he 10th Annual Fall Fine Arts and Crafts Show and Empty Bowls fundraiser, held at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center, kicked off the holiday season in Pembroke Pines. The event enjoyed a large turnout with many finding the perfect gift. It also raised record funds for the Empty Bowls Thanksgiving Food Drive. “This event showcased talented artists from all over South Florida, including Pembroke Pines,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. More than 70 vendors participated in the show, including many new artists. They sold one-of-a-kind creations that included portraits made from nails and assorted hardware, hand designed and colored pictures, teapots, frames decorated in vintage jewelry, clothing for American Girl dolls, pet ornaments, candles, and more. The show also featured pottery from the Empty Bowls group, comprised of students from the Community Center’s

day and evening Pottery Studio program. The Artists in Action donate their time, talent and supplies to help feed the “empty bowls” of the hungry. The proceeds from the sale of their pottery benefit the Community Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive for needy families in the community. Through the years, students have donated hundreds of items, which have raised thousands of dollars to benefit the annual Thanksgiving food drive. “One hundred percent of the Empty Bowls donated by my talented students benefit the SWFP Annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive,” said artist Leroy Daniels, who teaches the class. The SWFP Community Center offers adults 18 and older an opportunity to meet new people, build a support network or gather information. It is also a place that they can go to simply read a book or shoot pool. The Center offers trips and special events on a regular basis including self-improvement classes, educational classes, health classes and support programs presented by area professionals.

Brown’s Harbor Offers Housing for People That Have Aged Out of Foster Care
S
ince 2007, the City of Pembroke Pines Transitional Independent Living program has been providing housing and supportive services to foster youth, ages 18 to 22 years old, who have aged out of the foster care system or relative /non-relative care placement. Located on the Howard C. Forman Human Services Campus in Pembroke Pines, the facility includes 20 two-bedroom apartments and a community center. With the support of Ashley and Ed Brown, the City of Pembroke Pines and ChildNet, Children’s Harbor took over the program operations on September 1. It has been renamed Brown’s Harbor. The Brown’s nonprofit, Selfless Love Foundation, recently gave a $1 million gift to Children’s Harbor. The money will provide for the renovation of the apartments, a redesign of the business center on the property and also provide a wide range of services to help guide these youth toward true independence. “We have big dreams - not only for Brown’s Harbor, but for these wonderful young people,” said Ashley Brown, president of Selfless Love Foundation, which was created to provide foster care youth with life skills and programs to better equip them for their future. “Our plans are to improve this existing program by creating a supportive sense of community, providing life skills
workshops and renovating the apartments to feel like more of a loving home environment.” The Browns visited Children’s Harbor when they were searching for a legacy project to help children who were aging out of foster care. “Foster kids have always held a special place in my heart,” says Ashley. “Both my sister and I were adopted by two of the most loving, generous and supportive parents. I often think, what would have happened to me if I didn’t have the guidance and influence of parents to help transition me through life? As a result, I’ve always had the desire to payback that blessing by helping foster kids.” The Browns fell in love with Children’s Harbor from the moment they arrived. “There was an instant sense of love, hope and positivity which is something none of the nonprofits I visited had,” said Ashley. Dr. Elizabeth Wynter, Children’s Harbor CEO, had been talking with the City of Pembroke Pines about taking over operations of their housing program. Unfortunately, the funding for the program was ending and 24 young adult residents were going to have to find another place to live. The Browns expressed an interest and ChildNet, the

Community Based Care lead child welfare agency, stepped up to provide operating funds. “We quickly jumped at this opportunity to collaborate with Children’s Harbor and after a year, we are thrilled by the prospect of making Selfless Love at Brown’s Harbor come to fruition,” added Ashley. “Now the work begins.” Children’s Harbor is “home” to 24 siblings and 11 teen mothers who live in the group homes. “At age 18, they age out of the system unprepared for adulthood,” said Wynter. “We care deeply about our kids and want them to be successful. Thanks to Ashley and Ed, they have a safe, caring place to live and support to help them reach their goals.”

PPCHS Students Raise the Game at Journalism Summit
SECTION news school HEAD

S
tudents at Pembroke Pines Charter High School at the Academic Village recently had an opportunity to meet, learn from and ask questions of four professionals involved in community-based journalism and sports media. They participated in the “Raise Your Game Journalism Summit” at the school. The audience included approximately 100 students in Faran Fagen’s Yearbook, Newspaper, Digital Publishing and Journalism classes. Fagen, who organized the first-time event, is the Electives Department Head and has spent the last 13 years at the school as Newspaper/Yearbook Adviser. “I really feel the students got a lot out of the summit,” said Fagen.
Event organizer Faran Fagen addresses the students.
In a Town Hall style meeting held the school’s library, students heard from: ▸▸ Bruce Silverman, who hosts the Silverman on Sports radio show; is the voice of Miami FC soccer; and has spent 20 years in the yearbook business with Herff-Jones. ▸▸ PPCHS Alumnus Chris Wittyingham, who works at CBS Sportsline; is a member of the PPCHS Hall of Fame; was the host of 790AM The Ticket; served as the voice of the University of Miami Basketball while a student at The U; and was the sports editor of The CHAT while attending PPCHS. ▸▸ Author Ethan Skolnick, who writes books about youth and maturity; covers the Miami Heat for the Miami Herald; hosts “The Ethan Skolnick Show” on 790AM The Ticket; and was a reporter for Sun-Sentinel and Palm Beach Post. ▸▸ Jonathan Rosen, whose comedic novel, Night of the Living Cuddle Bunnies, will debut in 2017 and is also a teacher, freelance writer of educational books about children, softball travel team coach, and sports fan. Panelists shared their firsthand knowledge about the nature of the business, writing and working in the media. Fagen also asked them to tell the students what they wish they knew in high school. The panelists advised students to be open to trying new things in journalism; always be available to cover an event; keep chasing their dreams; and listen to people in the

field with a lot of experience. Students were also exposed to a “day in the life” as a journalist in the field, facing the reality of deadlines in a 24-hour news cycle, dealing with the politics of the business and how to handle career trials and triumphs. “The next day in class, the journalism students came through the door with renewed energy and enthusiasm,” said Fagen. “We are working on a special election issue for the newspaper, and the staff engaged in a professional exchange of ideas for coverage, much of which was brought up during the Raise Your Game Summit. The classroom felt like a real newsroom, which is what every newspaper adviser dreams of.” Fagen says he plans to make it an annual event. AHA Recognizes PPCES West Campus’ Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser By Debby Teich
J
umping rope is an efficient way to burn calories, improve your cardiovascular fitness and keep your heart happy. During American Heart Health month in February 2016, students at Pembroke Pines Charter West Campus Elementary School learned some of these lessons first-hand, as they participated in Jump Rope for Heart. The American Heart Association recently recognized the school for placing 3rd among Broward County Charter Schools for its “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraising event during the 2015-2016 school year. “Our West Campus students and their families have taken the AHA to heart by participating and generously donating to promote heart health,” said Michael Castellano, principal of the Pembroke Pines Charter West Campus. Jump Rope for Heart is a national wellness/ fund-raising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE AMERICA, Society of Health and Physical Educators. The program engages elementary students in the physical activity of jumping rope, while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and educa-

tion. During the two-week program, students learn about heart disease and stroke related prevention, such as heart attack and stroke warning signs, the importance of physical activity, and an anti-tobacco messages. During last year’s event, students fun-d-raised in their physical education class. They listened to upbeat music, as they rotated through the “airnasium” using long ropes, short ropes and hula hoops. They also participated in Tinikling, a traditional Philippine dance. Principal Castellano and several teachers jumped with some of the students. Last year, the school’s students raised $9,081 under the direction of coach Michelle Sand. In the past ten years, the event has raised over $110,000 to benefit the American Heart Association. “The students love jumping rope,” said Sand. “In addition, heart health awareness is raised, as well as funds for the American Heart Association. It is a win-win day.” Sand says that the school will participate in the event again on February 17, 2017.

PPCS Students Bag the Trash During a Coastal Clean Up
school news
By Debby Teich
H
ollywood Beach North Park is now a little cleaner thanks to the efforts of students from the Pembroke Pines Charter School East Elementary Campus Beach Patrol Club. They recently joined the world’s largest volunteer effort for our ocean and waterways by participating in the 31st International Coastal Cleanup. This is the 14th year in a row that East Campus’ Beach Patrol has participated in the effort. “Our students learn about the negative impact litter has on the environment and health in science class,” said Lisa Dizengoff, science facilitator at the East Campus. “They want to help the earth for the benefit of animals and people, so they volunteer to make a difference.” After applying sun screen and putting on hats and gloves, the students hit the sand. As they bagged up the debris, they became increasingly aware of the amount of trash people left behind. In total, the PPCS students collected nearly 400 pounds of litter at the cleanup.
“Our students were surprised by the amount of litter they picked up, and shocked to learn the amount they picked up is about the same as the prior year,” said Dizengoff. “The event is always a lot of fun and we love participating. We all agreed, however, it would be much better if people who visited our beaches would be more careful and use the garbage cans.” The Pembroke Pines Charter School East Campus Beach Patrol is comprised of students, faculty, families, and alumni. This year the East Campus was joined by friends and faculty from the Central Campus. “We had a great turn out with 250 people participating in the 2016 Coastal Clean Up,” said Dizengoff. “Our students left the beach knowing they helped make the ocean and coas tline a little better for marine life and people.” For information, visit www.pinescharter.net.
Mike Jarvis Delivers Motivational Message to Franklin Academy Students By Debby Teich
M
ike Jarvis, author, sports analyst/commentator, and former Division 1 college basketball coach, recently appeared at Franklin Academy’s K-8 Pembroke Pines Campus to deliver a motivational talk to approximately 600 students in grades 5th through 8th. “It is important to connect the relationship between what is being taught in the classroom and that time down the line in the future when they will be applying what they are learning to their career and personal life,” said Bill Nedoroscik, Athletic Director. Jarvis has a long list of accolades, some of which include: serving as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches; coaching his alma mater Cambridge Rindge High School to a National Championship; leading three Division 1 programs (Boston University, George Washington University, St. John’s University) to the NCAA championship tournament; becoming the winningest coach in Florida Atlantic University’s history; and coaching several prominent players, including Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing and Michael Jordan and former NBA All-Star Ron Artest. Jarvis’ message to the students focused on topics common to his book “Skills for Life” and Franklin Academy’s new International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, an instructional framework that relates Florida Standards-Based Curriculum to local, regional, and global issues. During his presentation, he talked about his career and personal life, asked the students what commitment meant to them, and more. “Franklin Academy’s motto: ‘Building Better People Every Day’ sums up my motivation for writing ‘Skills for Life,’” said Jarvis. “Having an opportunity to influence young people is always special to me. It’s good to know that there are schools like Franklin Academy that are preparing tomorrow’s leaders.” The kids were silent during the presentation, as they listened to Jarvis’ anecdotes and motivational messages. “The kids took away the importance of being of good character through good and bad times…and to always remember those that have always believed in them,” said Alberto Castro, Instructional Support.

Some of the students’ comments included: ▸▸ “He told us to follow your dreams and don’t ever give up,” said Morgan Spencer, 13. “If you want to be successful, you have to stay in school, work hard, and get good grades.” ▸▸ “He taught us to always try your hardest every time you play a sport,” said Julian Sanchez, 12. “No matter if you win or lose, you need to have fun while you’re doing it.” ▸▸ “When he talked about commitment, he said to always do you best and always put 110% into anything you do,” said Gabrielle Gouveia, 13. Coach Jarvis will be returning to the school to speak with the students again. His book, “Skills for Life,” and the accompanying “playbook” (which is a workbook) will be implemented this year with the school’s student-athletes and coaches.

Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer
Bruno Bastos, MD
Cleveland Clinic Florida Oncologist
If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause, there are other factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma
A false perception is prevalent in society today, that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control
show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure. “Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.” Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos. There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”
who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smoke-free increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. Lung Cancer: Novel Targeted Immunotherapy Cancer cells are not like normal cells, in that they rapidly divide and frequently mutate or change in order to evade the immune system. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that stimulates the body’s immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. A new investigational research trial, called CheckMate, is now being offered in select sites across the country to patients with advanced lung cancer. “This trial involves a new immunotherapy approach that specifically activates the immune system to fight lung cancer tumor cells, without harming healthy tissue,” according to Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist, Bruno Bastos, MD. Cleveland Clinic Florida has been designated the first academic medical center in the region to participate in this cutting-edge immunotherapy trial. Dr. Bastos states, “We are pleased to now offer this treatment to patients with advanced lung cancer.”

I
am happy to announce that after many years of planning and hard work, the Pembroke Road overpass is finally open. On September 17, 2016, with much fanfare, the bridge connecting the eastern and western parts of both Pembroke Pines and Miramar was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a 5K run, bike ride and other family-friendly festivities on the overpass. Traffic started flowing across the span before noon. The overpass does not have entrance or exit ramps connecting to I-75, but it acts as a pressure release valve for traffic on adjacent overpasses. The City is planning to extend Pembroke Road west to US 27. Now residents can go all the way east without deviating to Pines Boulevard or Miramar Parkway. I’d also like to take this time to remind everyone of the Southwest Focal Point Community Center’s Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to help families in need. Now through November 18, at 5pm, schools, clubs, organizations, families and individuals wishing to make donations of nonperishable canned and/or boxed foods, checks, cash or grocery store gift cards can drop them off at the Center, located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue. The Center opens at 8am, Monday through Friday. It closes on Monday and Friday at 5pm, and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30pm. For more information, please contact Diane Shawcross at 954-450-6888 or via email at dshawcross@ ppines.com.
Please join us in honoring all of our country’s veterans, past and present, at our Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016, from noon to 2 pm, at the Pembroke Pines City Center Veterans Memorial Pavilion, located at 10300 Pines Blvd. This solemn ceremony of remembrance will include guest speakers from multiple U.S. Services, the presentation of colors, scouts and a performance by the Pembroke Pines Charter School Band. Refreshments will also be served. For more information, please call 954-392-2116. And, though the holidays may seem far off, they really are right around the corner. Here are two more upcoming events that should be on your calendars: ▸▸ Santa’s Holiday Hotline – Register by December 1, to schedule your child’s phone call from Santa. Download the Pembroke Pines North Pole Holiday Hotline at www.ppines.com. Return completed form to: Santa’s Holiday Hotline C/O City of Pembroke Pines, 10100 Pines Blvd. (2nd Floor Building B) Pembroke Pines, FL 33026. ▸▸ Snowfest - It will be held on Saturday, December 3, from 4pm-8pm, at Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Boulevard. The cost is $2pp; children under 2 years are free. I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

f there is ever the right time to buy Real Estate, it’s now! Interest rates are still at historical lows and the market is in the midst of a shift, as it moves towards a stable market, whereby neither buyer nor sellers have the edge. The edge lies within the price and condition of the property being sold. At this point in time, Buyers who “sit on the fence” waiting for the home prices to decline have another surprise coming to them, as home prices are on the cusp of stabilizing and are appreciating at the historical average of 4% to 6% in most areas. The other challenge that exists for buyers that are currently “on the fence” is that mortgage interest rates have been slowly rising within the last few months. At the time of writing this editorial, rates are an average of 3.75% for a 30-year fixed rate loan. What buyers are not taking into consideration is the effect that the interest rates have on them as purchasers. How does this affect the buyer? The collective mentality of the average buyer is to postpone the purchase in order to either save more for either a larger down payment or wait for the prices to either stabilize or correct/fall. What is not being taken into consideration is the fact that for every one percent increase in the interest rate, there is a 10% decrease in the buyer’s purchasing power. For example, a buyer who can afford a $300,000 home at today’s rate will only be able to afford one at $285,000 if the rates go up by 0.5%, and one at $270,000 if the rates go up by 1.0% from the current rate. This is something to think about if you are one of these buyers with the above mindset. Given the opportunity to purchase, I would certainly move forward in the buying process. Over time, once becoming a homeowner, the “American Dream” will take care of itself in monetary appreciation, as it always has over a period of time.

When is it the right time to sell? Depending on the circumstances that create the motivation to sell, the right time is now! Why? The market, as I mentioned, is currently experiencing a shift from a total seller’s market into a more stable one. Buyers are just “sitting on the fence,” while the available housing inventory is slowly rising. At some point in time, within the next several months, the Law of Supply and Demand is going to kick in. There is no doubt that buyers will have a wider selection of homes to choose from as history repeats itself! So, if there is a need to sell, price and condition is what counts. Sellers that are “testing” the market end up frustrated and, more often than not, lose time, effort and money in the consequence. Legally Speaking
Time Runs Out on Work Accidents By Mayleidys Porraspita, Esquire
M
eet our Claimant John. John was injured at work and shortly after his accident he filed a Petition for Benefits. The insurance company authorized his medical care and he was treated for several months before he was deemed to be at full recovery and released to return to work. John returned to work with occasional pain, but he ignored it and chose not to go back to his doctor. Two years later, he felt the pain increasing in frequency and severity, so he contacted his employer to go back to his authorized treating doctor under his worker’s compensation claim. But John gets an unexpected answer - his claim is closed and he is barred from any further treatment. How can that be? In Florida, most employers are required by law to carry Worker’s Compensation insurance, which covers benefits to employees when injured on the job. Although the Worker’s Compensation system is designed to be a no-fault system, the injured worker, also referred to as the Claimant, can inadvertently waive or time-out on his/her rights. The first responsibility as a Claimant is to properly report the claim within 30 days. The Claimant must also ensure that the Statute of Limitations does not run out on the claim. But often times a Claimant has no idea what that term means or how to avoid the statue running on the claim. The running of the Statute of Limitations is a legal provision that ends the Claimants rights to sue for benefits. In the Worker’s Compensation system, a Claimant sues via the filing of a Petition for Benefits. In order to be eligible to sue for benefits, a Claimant must file a Petition within two years of the date of the injury. If the Claimants fails to do so, the statute provides that the claim for benefits may be forever barred. In the John scenario above, the Claimant complies with this requirement and is nevertheless still barred from treatment. Why? Most Claimants fall into the pitfalls of the statute of limitations in the second requirement of the provision. Once the Claimant files a Petition, he/she has an ongoing responsibility to keep the claim open by returning to an authorized treating physician at least once per year. This is where many Claimants inadvertently lose their rights. In the John scenario above, the Claimant felt the pain was tolerable and he did not want to lose time from work or be seen as a complainer. He powers through the pain and keeps working only to later find out that his rights have expired. Unfortunately, many Claimants are faced with this harsh reality simply by not knowing how to prevent it. A knowledgeable Workers’ Compensation attorney can guide the injured worker through the system ensuring that the Claimant does not fall into the pitfalls of the Statute of Limitations. If you or a loved one is concerned about the Statute of Limitations affecting your claim or barring your rights, contact our office immediately for a free consultation and analysis of your rights. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines, Florida. If ytou have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern, call our office at 800-4925455. HABLAMOS ESPANOL.

How to Avoid the Next Flood of Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense, Bankruptcy Protection and Consumer Advocacy Attorney
M
illions of Americans will soon see monthly bills shoot up on their home equity lines of credit (HELOC) taken out during the housing boom from 2005-2008, because they will convert from interest-only (no principal) to principal and interest payments at the loan’s ten year mark. HELOCS are a type of second mortgage that homeowners used to tap into the equity built up in their home. A recent analysis by Realty Trac shows that 3.3 million homes in the U.S. carry HELOCS from the 2005-08 era, and that 56% of these homes are “seriously underwater.” When these HELOCS change from interest-only to principal and interest, the monthly payments will more than double. This change will force many homeowners to default on their HELOC payments, which will lead to foreclosure of their homes. However, there are several ways to avoid this next flood of foreclosures, and to save your home. First, you should have a qualified real estate attorney, like the attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm, closely review your HELOC for any deficiencies which prevent the lender from enforcing its terms through a foreclosure proceeding. For example, was the HELOC security agreement signed by BOTH husband and wife, and was it properly recorded in the county where the property is located?
Second, if the HELOC already “matured,” and more than five years have passed without making payment, Florida law will permit you to eliminate that lien from your property through a quiet title action. This means you can wipe out the loan in its entirety due to your lender “sleeping” on their rights. Third, if you are unable to pay the increased monthly payment on your HELOC, you may be eligible to negotiate a significant reduction in the amount you owe your lender. Especially for homeowners who owe more than your home is worth, HELOC companies will not likely to recover the amount they are owed in a foreclosure. These companies prefer to negotiate a reduced payoff balance of the HELOC with the homeowner of anywhere between 5-30% of the amount actually owed. The negotiated amount is usually repaid in a one to five year time frame. We have settled dozens of these HELOC settlements on behalf of our clients, and have significant experience and established credibility in negotiating with HELOC collection companies. Lastly, if you owe more on your first mortgage than your home is worth, you will be able to completely wipe out your HELOC and the lien against your home by filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In that bankruptcy proceeding, you will also be able to eliminate credit card debt, medical debt, reduce or eliminate IRS debt, and even modify your first mortgage through an innovative new program available in South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free office consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, who will personally review your case. hen discussing cosmetic enhancements of the face and body, patients often focus on the procedures and products available and ignore the significance of nutrition. At the cellular level, the aging process is characterized by mitochondrial damage, inflammation, and glycation. Plastic surgery addresses the external signs of aging. Proper nutrition, including diet and supplements, can not only slow the aging process, but, also ensure that the patient heals properly after surgery. Adequate Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production, which strengthens a wound and fights free radical damage. Other less often mentioned antioxidants, which are more potent, are resveratrol (found in red wine) and pycnogenol (pine bark extract). Both have demonstrated clinical efficacy in reducing inflammation in the body and reversing the signs of aging. Patients often prefer nonfat supplements, which at times are actually higher in sugar and more damaging to the body. Too much sugar in your diet leads to increased levels of insulin and can progress to fat infiltration in the liver. Unsaturated fatty acids, such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, are essential fatty acids that are good for the body. They are often found in plant foods, such as vegetable oils; nuts (almonds, walnuts); seeds (flax); and fish, such as salmon. It is the saturated fats and trans fats that should be avoided as much as possible. These are found in butter, red meat, and high fat dairy products. Recently, scientists have presented conflicting evidence as to the benefits of Omega-7 fatty acids. Palmitoleic acid is not an essential fatty acid, meaning our bodies can manufacture it from other nutrients and we don’t need to get it from food. Experimental studies have shown it to be beneficial in reducing heart disease and triglyceride levels. More controlled clinical trials are necessary to determine the health benefits of this omega. As we age, our metabolism changes and hormone levels decrease. The effects of years of cellular damage from poor dietary habits and lack of proper nutrition become more evident. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown in studies to reduce fat and preserve muscle tissue. CLA helps you lose weight faster by reducing fat storage introduced by your daily diet and accelerating fat metabolism within the existing adipose (fat) tissue. Similarly, L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid, which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of triglycerides as fuel. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat. No pill or supplement is a substitute for a balanced, healthy diet, including some degree of calorie restriction, low-glycemic foods, coupled with both cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. Patients should know that not all supplements affect each individual in the same manner. If you are uncertain whether you should be taking a specific supplement because of health conditions or medications you are taking, consult with your physician first. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:
Avoiding Probate: Debunking Common Myths BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
Y
ou likely know that probate administration is expensive, time consuming and public. Yet, there are commonly held misconceptions surrounding this topic which lead many to make uniformed decisions resulting in the need to have an estate probated. While the best way to avoid probate is to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s take a look at just a few probate and estate planning myths: I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common of all the estate planning myths! The truth is that inherited property cannot be retitled, or sold, without the participation and approval of the probate court, which requires probate administration for the deceased. Adding my adult child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection, if it is not their primary residence. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there will not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. What if your child has creditors or is involved in a lawsuit? Or what if he or she divorces? Finally, as your child is listed as an owner, they must participate and sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property. I like to save money. Can I obtain the necessary forms and submit them to the probate court myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida almost all probate cases require an attorney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets are only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent. My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience in south Florida. Most simple estates can be settled within a year. But keep in mind that because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates, taxable estates, or estates with disputes among family members, may take several years to settle. I created a revocable living trust so I am not concerned about probate. A revocable living trust can help you avoid probate but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through a probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries, causing delay, additional cost and avoidable complexity. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. Holiday Concerns by evan baron
M
ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule. Last minute issues will not usually be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to ensure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008. Therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2015, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration. Perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Heel Pain In Children ASK THE EXPERT
By Dr. Carlo Messina
D
oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis), which is located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth), becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel Over activity in children commonly between the ages of eight and 14 Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle Flatfeet Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot Growth spurts
SYMPTOMS: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk
SIGNS:
▸▸ Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel ▸▸ Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground ▸▸ Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel ▸▸ Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens
TREATMENT: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot Rest and Ice Stretching exercises Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone ▸▸ Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment ▸▸ Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

n medicine today, the incorporation of holistic therapies and integrative medicine techniques are growing rapidly in virtually all fields of practice. As medicine turns to more alternative treatments and complementary therapies, the question that becomes rather natural to ask in my specialty of medicine is: How does plastic surgery fit into a world of holistic and integrative medicine? It’s a great question and here is some perspective from a plastic surgeon. Many physicians today, both personally and professionally, apply a holistic and integrative approach to their own health and wellness as well as for their patients. This stems from a more modern way of thinking that instead of just treating every ailment with some drug or medical procedure, we can incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative therapies at the same time. Given this perspective, over the last few years some plastic surgeons have begun incorporating some holistic and integrative techniques. Let’s start with a very basic concept about plastic surgery. From a practical point of view, plastic surgery itself is not holistic or integrative, that is just a fact. The reality is that with anti-aging medicine and people striving to take better care of themselves both internally as well as externally, cosmetic surgery is here to stay. So how can a doctor take a holistic approach to plastic surgery with their patients? A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach can use techniques to complement procedures with natural preparations and post-surgery healing strategies. The art of plastic surgery procedures is not just in the medical procedure or treatment itself, but also in the way the physician helps their patients prepare themselves for procedures and the way they advise a patient to take care of themselves when healing. What does this really mean? A plastic surgeon who incorporates integrative techniques encourages patients, if time permits, to begin preparation four-to-six-weeks prior to surgery. A typical prep could include working with a nutritionist for weight loss and overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, reiki for stress reduction, and vitamin supplements and homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing. Other times they will recommend a nutritional detox and/or lymphatic drainage. How a surgeon approaches each patient differs, but my experience over the years is that holistic and integrative preparation prior to procedures usually results in a quicker, less painful healing experience. Getting the mind and the body working together prior to surgery helps most patients heal after surgery. As important as the procedure is in plastic surgery, the healing process is just as important. From the beginning of patient contact, a physician’s office can be proactive by introducing holistic and integrative approaches to assist with healing. These non-traditional techniques, as a follow on to cosmetic surgery procedures, may be one of the reasons that a patient may want to choose one plastic surgeon over another. Dr. Tamy Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Her office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus in Weston.
