Urgent Care The best way to avoid getting the flu is to get a flu shot. And now you can get yours at a local Broward Health Urgent Care. The flu refers to common strains of viruses that go around each year, mainly in the fall and winter. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. People at high risk include young children, pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and anyone aged 65 and older. So come and get yours at your local Broward Health Urgent Care. It’s part of doing whatever it takes to keep Broward healthy. For more information visit BrowardHealth.org/UrgentCare or call one of our three locations to assist you. Walk-ins welcome. Coral Springs: 954.320.3323 Weston: 954.217.5700 Plantation: 954.320.3360

Happy Valentine’s Day!
W
ow, time surely flies! New Year’s celebrations are already a month in the past and 2016 is in full swing. While our neighbors in the Northern states are scraping ice from the windows of their cars and shoveling the snow in their driveway, we enjoy the warmth of the Sunshine State. The kids are busy with school and afterschool activities, parents are busy at work, and we are all dreaming about summer vacations. This is also the time of year when we make plans for a special evening with our Valentine. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them or which restaurant we shall visit, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that it is a gift that comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift then spending valuable time with the ones we love. This February, give from your heart and enjoy each other’s company. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Sincerely,

Successful Soref JCC Book Month and Golf Classic Events Raise Money for Scholarships and Food Pantry Programs BY JILL SHARPE
T
he Soref Jewish Community Center (JCC) raised nearly $15,000 in their last two events of 2015, the Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month in November and the Love ‘Fore’ the Kids Golf Classic in December. Both events’ proceeds went directly to the Children’s Scholarship Program and the JCC’s WECARE Food Pantry. The Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month featured two events: a luncheon with author Barbara Weitzner, whose book Choices features a collection of short stories about the vanishing innocence of a young girl and a wine and cheese evening with author and Holocaust survivor Irene WeisbergZisblatt. Weisberg-Zisblatt’s book, The Fifth Diamond, is an autobiography about her time as a prisoner in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Her story was also featured in Steven Spielberg’s Oscarwinning documentary, The Last Days. Love ‘Fore’ the Kids Golf Classic is an annual event at Woodmont Country Club. Now in its 24th year, the Classic highlights the participants’ competitive nature and includes closest to the pin challenges and best overall team. “We host these events every year and it’s always amazing to see such an outpouring from the community,” said Soref JCC Executive Director Donald Graw. “We are thankful to the participants, donors and sponsors who help us raise money for these important

programs.” The Soref JCC’s Children’s Scholarship Program enables children from less fortunate families to attend high quality preschool, afterschool and summer camp programs. Since the inception of the JCC in 1977, over $7 million of scholarship assistance and this year alone expects to provide approximately $500,000 of scholarship support to those in need. Over 90 percent of the scholarships assist families with preschool daycare and summer camp, which is vital for parents who work. Most of the preschool families have young parents who are at the early stage of their economic development and are in desperate need of financial assistance to afford high quality daycare. The Soref
JCC not only provides high quality daycare but also provides children with a strong foundation to understand their Jewish heritage. WECARE Food Pantry distributes free nonperishable food to all Broward residents in need. Most of the clients are referred to WECARE from premier social service agencies including Women in Distress, Broward County School District, Henderson Behavioral Health, Archways, Jewish Family Service of Broward, Gulf Coast, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, and numerous others. Vital financial support for WECARE includes: The Jewish Federation of Broward County, United Way of Broward County, Walmart, Publix Supermarket Charities and the Emergency Food & Shelter Program. Since 2014, $8 billion across-the-board farm bill reduction in SNAP benefits (aka food stamps), the WECARE food pantry has experienced almost a 20 percent increase in clients served. While the nationwide employment outlook has improved somewhat in recent years, food banks around the country are reporting soaring levels of food insecurity and demand for emergency food assistance. The Soref JCC is currently planning its Humanitarian of the Year dinner. The event will take place in April and will benefit both the scholarship and food pantry programs.

FPL Launches Unprecedented Effort to Improve Electrical Service In Plantation and Sunrise BY JILL SHARPE
F
lorida Power & Light Company (FPL) recently announced it is working to upgrade the electric system in the cities of Plantation and Sunrise to benefit local homes and businesses. The work includes strengthening main power lines and equipment in the area, clearing vegetation from local power lines and installing advanced smart grid technology, as part of its ongoing efforts to deliver reliable electric service year-round. “We understand how much our customers depend on electricity. That’s why we’re working aggressively to upgrade the electric systems in Plantation and Sunrise. These improvements will help us build a stronger and smarter electric grid, to provide customers electricity they can count on in good weather and bad,” said FPL Area Manager David Blary. After performing a thorough inspection of local power lines and equipment, FPL started work on a number of projects in and near the two cities. The projects are designed to improve the quality of customers’ electric service by preventing outages and helping FPL restore power faster if outages occur. Service improvement projects in the Plantation and Sunrise area in 2015 included: ▸▸ Strengthening main power lines to better withstand severe weather – including wind gusts up to 145 mph – and deliver reliable electric service year-round. ▸▸ Clearing many miles of power lines of trees, branches and palm fronds – a major cause of power outages. ▸▸ Installing advanced smart grid technology, including 18 automated switches to help prevent outages and get your lights on faster if outages occur. The construction schedule for each project varies, with some of the work already finished and the remainder slated for completion in 2016. When the planned work is completed, FPL will have made the following
improvements in and near Plantation and Sunrise since the last major hurricanes hit Florida in 2005: ▸▸ Reinforced 25 main power lines, including those serving critical local facilities such as hospitals, police and fire rescue departments, 911 Dispatch and the Emergency Operations Center, Sunrise Sawgrass Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant as well as community thoroughfares. ▸▸ Inspected all of the utility poles in Plantation and Sunrise – more than 10,200 – restoring or replacing those that no longer meet the company’s standards for strength. ▸▸ Cleared more than 1,580 miles of power lines of trees and vegetation – a major cause of power outages. Since 2006, FPL has invested more than $2 billion to strengthen its system and its customers are seeing the benefits. FPL has improved service reliability by approximately 20 percent in the last five years and achieved its best-ever performance record in 2015. Additional information, including a map of the work area, is available online at FPL.com/Plantation and at FPL.com/Sunrise.
Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Gears Up for Eighth Annual Festival of Treasures Event BY JILL SHARPE
O
ne of Plantation’s most beloved spring festivals will return once again this year to Volunteer Park. Hosted by the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC), the festival will take place Saturday and Sunday March 5th and 6th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature art, handcrafts, collectibles and handmade jewelry. The event is a fundraiser for beautification projects in the City of Plantation. Past beautification projects have consisted of tree plantings at Liberty Tree Park and The Plantation Arboretum along with annual tree plantings at each of the Plantation Elementary and Middle Schools where tree seedlings are given to each student who participates in tree planting for Arbor Day. The PJWC is currently working on plans to expand Butterfly Gardens to interested Plantation Elementary and Middle Schools. PJWC also sponsored the installation of a mosaic tree frog medallion at Plantation Woods, planted a tree and donated a bronze plaque to honor Jeffrey Siegel in Liberty Tree Park, updated landscaping at Volunteer Park and the Veltri Tennis Center and continues to underwrite special landscaping projects for the City of Plantation. According to club publicist Danielle Durham, the initial purpose of the festival

8th Annual Kendra’s Kisses Memorial 5K Race Raises Money for Families Who Have a Child Battling Cancer BY JILL SHARPE
K
endra’s Kisses, the Kendra Vermont Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing social, emotional, and financial assistance to families and caregivers in need when a child or children are diagnosed with a life threatening illness, will hold their eighth annual fundraiser next month. Kendra’s Kisses Memorial 5K Run/Walk will kick-off at 7:30 a.m. on March 6th in Markham Park in Sunrise. The foundation was formed in 2008 by the Vermont family after 4-year-old Kendra Vermont passed away from a cancerous brain tumor. According to Kendra’s dad, Marc Vermont, he and his family wanted to help others in need the way that the community helped them when Kendra was battling cancer. With so many charities trying to get a slice of the donation pie, the Kendra Vermont Foundation decided the best way to make giving enjoyable and affordable was to create a 5K. In the past, the event has raised an average of $7500 and approximately 350 people each year participate. Organizers report that sadly the number of new childhood cancer diagnoses continues to rise and so do the requests for assistance so this year the goal is to raise $10,000 in order to sustain the charity for another year. “Any family that has a child under the age of 18 that is battling cancer can apply for assistance from the Foundation,” said Vermont. Once approved, the families are given a cash grant to use as they see fit for their situation. A small percentage of the money raised is used to cover website costs, cost of hosting the 5K
and advertisement. The charity differs from others because they assist the families directly instead of raising money for research or facilities. Everyone who works for the organization is a volunteer. “We offer guidance and counseling from a personal standpoint, buy gifts for the siblings of the children battling cancer and have even made household repairs,” Vermont said. “Above and beyond the cash grants we have also granted small wishes for the children with cancer, like being a firefighter for the day and purchasing a Sony Play Station.” Vermont explained that being able to help with expenses is a tremendous benefit when dealing with a child battling cancer. “We always select a family that receives a check at the race so participants can see the good that they are doing first-hand,” said Vermont. “If it enables the families to spend another joyous moment together, then we have accomplished our goal.” Pre-registration fees for the 5K are $30 for adults and $15 for children 10-18. The first 300 participants to register receive a moisture wick t-shirt, a sling bag and a lapel pin. There are custom medals for the top three men and women in nineteen age divisions and timing is provided by Accuchip. Packet pick-up is at Runner Depot in Davie on March 5th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Register online at www.kendraskisses.org.
Santa Visits Sick Kids at Plantation General Hospital BY JILL SHARPE

or the third consecutive year, the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s (PVFA) Santa Claus and his elves visited sick children at Plantation General Hospital in December. Santa distributed gifts collected during the PVFA’s annual “Stuff the Firetruck” Toy Drive. Santa is played each year by Firefighter Steve “Pops” Cicione, Sr. The project is his brainchild as he has a daughter with a very debilitating disease who has spent many holidays in hospitals so he knows first-hand what it’s like for a child to be in the hospital over the holidays. Santa was accompanied by 10 PVFA Care-A-Little team members who helped distribute the gifts which brought big smiles and some hugs. Parents of the kids in the hospital also were also very excited by the visit

which lasted about two hours. “Cicione and the Care-A-Little team members genuinely want to do something to make the holiday’s a little brighter for these kids,” said Joel Gordon, Public Information Officer for the Fire Department. Gordon added that the program has grown since it started thanks to participation from the community. “Walgreens has stepped up for the last couple of years donating large amounts of toys to make this possible.” Plantation Volunteer Fire Association President John Hatch said Santa’s annual visit to the hospital is a very important event for the PVFA. “The holidays are a tough time to be

February is American Heart Month SECTION HEAD Community News
By Beverly Perkins
F
ebruary is known for Cupid, flowers, candy and chocolate hearts. However, it’s also the month designated as American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure, is responsible for one out of every three deaths in America. In the effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it, heart-healthy habits need to be practiced not just this month, but every single one of them. “We want everyone to know how they can prevent heart disease, and to commit to a healthy lifestyle - both for themselves and for the sake of their loved ones,” said Sunrise Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. The Sunrise Fire Department shares the following guidelines to help reduce the risk factors.
Follow a healthy diet.
▸▸ Avoid fatty, overly-processed foods, as well as those high in sodium and sugar. ▸▸ Aim for several servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. ▸▸ If you drink alcohol, be sure to do so only in moderation: up to two drinks a day for men and only one for women.
Exercise.
▸▸ Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity, five days each week or more. You can break it into shorter periods throughout the day, and incorporate it into your routine with a brisk walk or by taking the stairs. ▸▸ Find activities you enjoy and fitness programs available right in your community at www.sunrisefl.gov. ▸▸ Exercise with a buddy to help you stay motivated.
Don’t Smoke.
▸▸ Find resources to help you quit at www.smokefree.gov .
Work with your doctor to evaluate and manage your risks for heart disease and stroke.
▸▸ Check your blood pressure, cholesterol numbers, blood sugar level, and body mass index (BMI). ▸▸ Discuss your results and ask your doctor for recommendations and resources to help you keep your heart healthy. Another way to celebrate Heart Month is to learn CPR. “Hands-Only CPR” is easy to learn and has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for sudden cardiac arrest, doubling and even tripling a victim’s chance of survival. Sunrise Fire Rescue will be offering the following “Hands-Only CPR” training sessions: Date Time Venue 2/3/16 7:00 pm Central Sunrise Residents Association meeting, Nob Hill Soccer Club 2/8/16 6:30 pm Community Room, Public Safety Building 2/18/16 7:00 pm East Sunrise Residents Association meeting, Village Civic Center 2/22/16 6:30 pm Community Room, Public Safety Building Call 954-746-3465 for class information. All Sunrise residents trained in CPR are also encouraged to download the PulsePoint phone app, which notifies users when CPR may be needed in a public place nearby. Visit www.pulsepoint.org for more information.
Miracles Do Happen – Snow Falls in South Florida at JAFCO! By Beverly Perkins
T
his past holiday season was full of miracles. Besides the traditional miracle of Hannukah, the children of JAFCO experienced the miracle of snow in sunny South Florida. This eight year annual tradition has been made possible by longtime supporters and Plantation residents Howard and Julie Talenfeld of BoardroomPR in Fort Lauderdale. More than 175 children and families celebrated the holiday with a snow-filled party at the JAFCO Children’s Village. All JAFCO children who currently live in the Village, have been adopted or placed in foster care through JAFCO programs eagerly attended this special event. The generous couple brought in over 15 tons of snow for the children to play in. JAFCO provided mittens, gloves and hats to keep their little bodies warm. Snow balls were made, snow angels were formed and sledding down a small hill made this a miniature winter wonderland even with the palm tree-lined landscape. The children were also treated to hot chocolate topped with marshmallows, of course. The Talenfelds anticipate the annual tradition as much as the children do. They love seeing the joy it brings and they never forget that everyone is not so fortunate during the holiday season. Some don’t even have the basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. “As a child, Chanukah was my favorite holiday. My family always had a huge party with all of our relatives and friends and today my husband Howard and I continue this tradition in our home for our family to enjoy,” said Julie Talenfeld. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this wonderful tradition to JAFCO.” The Talenfelds are proud JAFCO Godparents and, in 2009, BoardroomPR was

presented with the prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy. In 2014, Julie was awarded the Woman of Valor Award. The holiday party concluded with JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco lighting the fifth candle on the menorah with the help of JAFCO’s first adopted child and his new fiancé. Pizza was served along with the traditional holiday staples of latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts). The children were able to take home many amazing donated gifts. The charitable support of this event is also a miracle not to be forgotten. For more JAFCO events, please visit www.jafco.org. Their next event, JAFCO Art & Jazz in the Afternoon, is February 28th at the JAFCO Ability Center, 5100 N. Nob Hill Road, Sunrise from 3-6pm. Heart Smart Lifestyle Changes: Reduce Heart Disease Risks As the number one killer in the United States, heart disease continues to pose a significant risk for all Americans. But, what if you discovered that initiating simple lifestyle David Lopez, MD changes could make a world of difference in preventing the disease? Well, it’s a fact. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), making healthier lifestyle choices can substantially reduce your risk of heart disease. “Small lifestyle changes may have big impact on reducing the risk of heart disease, and aid in prevention overall,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist David Lopez, MD. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Anyone can make healthy lifestyle changes. Simply making smarter choices in diet and exercise is a great start. For example, in general, everyone should get 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Dr. Lopez shares that being sedentary, or not moving, increases the risk for many chronic health illnesses, including heart disease.
Since regular, moderate physical activity promotes a healthy vascular system, remaining active can be considered a huge step in the right direction towards prevention. “The key is to start slowly and to build up endurance, increasing to 30 minutes of exercise three to five times weekly,” recommends Dr. Lopez. Overall, healthy lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on reducing the risk of heart disease include: • Exercise regularly • Maintain a healthy weight • Watch cholesterol levels • Lower blood pressure • Regulate blood sugar levels • Reduce stress • Manage diabetes, and other chronic illnesses • Stop smoking
What can you do you improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Dr. Lopez adds, “It’s never too late to evaluate your lifestyle choices, and make positive changes. Every healthy change you make can increase your quality of life, and help you live longer.”

SECTION HEAD Inspiring Individual
South Florida Resident Spreads Her Wings at Markham Park By Beverly Perkins
A
n initiative that began a bit over a year ago finally came to completion this past winter. The Butterfly Garden at Markham Park was made possible by the numerous volunteers and the Markham Park staff in partnership with HandsOn Broward under the direction of Project Leader, Maria Mercedes Hernandez. Hernandez’s background as a Leader in Energy and Environmental Design has given her the tools needed to make things happen. Her passion to be an advocate for the environment has empowered her to find solutions within the community. This motivational individual has made it her personal mission to inspire and to educate the South Florida community on the importance of protecting and loving the environment. Having these goals in mind enabled her to work on various environmental community projects such as beach clean-ups, Christmas tree recycling, computer e-cycling and Earth Day celebrations.
Always wanting to do more, Hernandez proposed creating a Butterfly Garden to HandsOn Broward. This organization has numerous opportunities available to those that can donate any time they have available. The purpose of this particular outdoor project experience was to educate and create awareness of the importance of a butterfly garden in the community. Butterflies provide numerous benefits to the environment. However, their population is declining due to the destruction of their habitats and the toxic chemicals used to treat them. In order to save this beautiful population of flying insects, gardens need to be created with all the necessary living conditions. This will allow them to thrive again and maintain balance in the ecosystem. “I believe there is a need in our communities to offer hands on outdoor projects to teach and inspire our kids on the importance of loving and protecting
the environment and our natural resources in order to be able to create a sustainable world for our generation and generations to come,” says Maria Mercedes Hernandez, Project Leader for HandsOn Broward. The journey to get the garden complete wasn’t easy and took a year to complete. Fourteen extraordinary volunteers along with hundreds of others came together to learn about the enchanted creatures and to create a habitat that they would enjoy. However, a project such as this will never be complete as it will always need volunteers to continually give it the attention it deserves. The butterflies that call their garden at Markham Park home remind visitors to learn, love, and protect nature. For more HandsOn Broward volunteer opportunities or to work in the garden, please visit www.handsonbroward.org or email Maria Mercedes Hernandez at floridaleedap@gmail.com.

The Truth About Restraining Orders By Evan Baron
I am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. First of all, there is in fact really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic violence has standing to seek an injunction.

The basis for such an injunction therefore must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing, either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield, to protect an individual, and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
Why Many People Prefer Doing Their Banking at a Credit Union BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA
institutions? Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983. How can I become a credit union member? Many people believe they are not eligible to join
a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee. Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member, even if you move away. Is my money safe in a credit union? Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00. Credit Unions seem to have limited locations…. Over 5,005 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear. Technology? Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system.

Nola, named after her hometown of New Orleans, is a 3 year old rescue dog believed to be a Pomeranian mix. Her favorite person is her human mom, Kelsey. However, it may be Grandma Laurie if she lived closer. Her favorite toys are a squeaky bullfrog, a stuffed carrot and tennis balls. She loves peanut butter, doggy sausage links and bones, but dislikes baths, manicures and fireworks. Her favorite pastime is to play fetch and ride in the car. She was last seen curled up next to her favorite human with a half-eaten bone by her side.
