Happy New Year!
N
ew Year’s Day marks the beginning of a new year. It also serves as a point in time for many of us to start a change in our lives, like losing weight, eating healthier or reconnecting with long-lost friends. Whether you choose to call it a resolution or simply a goal to be a better you, the first step to making it happen is to write down what you want to accomplish and the steps it will take to get there. By setting a goal and keeping to your plan, you can make your goal or resolution a reality. Personally, our goal for 2019 is to spend more time with our children. With our oldest son now a high school senior, our nest will soon start to empty. We want to cherish this family time as much as we can while the kids are still home. Professionally, our goal is to continue to provide you with the best local news coverage available. Our City Media is proud to be South Florida’s leader in community news. Our team of experienced journalists are committed to bringing you the latest news on what’s happening in your community and your local schools. Be sure to check out our website www.ourcitymedia.com. Visit now and often to find a digital version with the same types of content found in our print magazines in multi-media format! While you are on the site, check out some of our other magazines. Toni Tony Tone – Brothers Dwayne and Raphael Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian have proven themselves durable guardians of the soul and funk tradition, while also infusing their music with enough contemporary devices to remain popular. This Oakland trio scored a number one R&B hit right out of the box in 1988 with “Little Walter,” a song that generated some criticism from gospel audiences for its use of the melody from “Wade in the Water.” But they’ve since been able to keep things going on their own, as their LPs, The Revival in 1990 and Sons of Soul in 1993, have also been enormously successful. Tony! Toni! Toné! released their fourth album, House of Music, in the fall of 1996. Tickets: $35/$50/$60 - 7:30 pm -9:30 pm - Miramar Cultural Center Theater, 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar.

The Miramar Community Garden Nourishes the Body, Mind, and Soul BY BEVERLY PERKINS

esides fruits and veggies, The Miramar Community Garden (MCG) is filled with other opportunities to help the community grow. The anticipated Garden Event Series presented with Baptist Health South Florida offers free educational programs for the entire family. The first event last fall was a “Family Fun Cooking Class”. Parents were invited to a hands-on demonstration about the art of teaching children how to love nutritious food. Experts guided them through a culinary adventure with dietician Lucette Talamas and MCG’s very own Ana Banana. Participants enjoyed making “Monster Hummus Rice Cakes” guided by Talamas, followed by creating a delicious “Tutti-Frutti Pizza” under the direction of the very colorful Ana Banana. Parents were impressed to see the big bites their little ones were taking when savoring such delicious recipes. “Baptist Health South Florida, amiably represented by Samia Chevannes, continues to be a most generous sponsor committed to improving the health and wellness of our community. And the gorgeous setting of the Miramar Community Garden irresistibly draws families together and inspires healthy and delicious eating. Bringing Baptist Health and MCG together for the ‘Garden Series’ gives participants a sense of whole,
clean eating coming from a whole, clean source. I’m honored and delighted to take part in presenting these educational, fun and free programs for Miramar residents and surrounding communities,” exclaimed Ana Cooper aka Ana Banana, Miramar Community Outreach Specialist. The next three free events held on the third Saturday of each month from 11:00 am-1:00 pm invite the community to the MCG to learn and grow. Space is limited, so registration is suggested. Each participant will also receive a raffle ticket upon arrival. Police Academy – Miramar Citizens on Assignment BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any may remember the 1980s film series Police Academy in which the local police department had to accept all willing recruits. The film then followed a group of misfit recruits as they tried proving their capability to become outstanding police officers. Despite their set-backs and eccentricities the all-star cast succeeded proving that an underdog can achieve whatever they set their mind to. Like the major motion picture, The Miramar Police Department will once again be offering the “47th Citizens’ Police Academy” to recruit and teach the public how they can get involved in preventing crime. The free 14-week course gives those interested a behind-the-scenes look at how the department operates. The Miramar Police Department’s “Citizens’ Police Academy” is a series of classes designed to educate
the public about police operations within the city of Miramar. Classes are taught in a classroom setting where citizens are provided with a better understanding of the day to day operations of the police department and they will receive valuable information on topics such as Basic Self Defense, Burglary Investigations, Special Weapons and Tactic Team (SWAT) Demonstration, DUI enforcement programs, and so much more. A “Ride-Along” program is also available to qualified participants which allow them to ride with an officer during a regular patrol shift. Other highlights of the course are a K-9 demonstration and CPR certification.“If you engage with your community, you bridge the gap and build relationships with each other,” said Police Chief Dexter Williams. “I hope all of residents find the time to attend one of our academies. The program is interactive. You will get involved and in doing so you will have a better understanding of police work and our service to the community.” The Citizens’ Police Academy is currently restricted to no more than 25 participants. Because space is limited, applications should only be
submitted by those individuals who can commit to attending the 14 weeks. “I recommend this kind of citizens academy to everybody. It’s good to know where the challenges lay. You want to live in a safe place, but you are part of creating the safe place,” expressed former participant Kai Schulz. The informative classes will commence on February 12th and run every Tuesday from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm through May 14th at the police headquarters with some classes at the west district substation. Space is limited. To register, or for more information, please call the Public Affairs Unit at 954-602-4351, email ohall@miramarpd. org, or visit www.MiramarPD.org. Applications can be picked up at Police Headquarters, 11765 City Hall Promenade, Miramar.

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Miramar Home Up for Sale Kim Cox
Remember not so long ago, when
you could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then, to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a large profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the homeselling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most
homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-603-3984 and enter 3000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

A Blaze of Glory – Miramar Fire Rescue Hosted Annual ALS Competition BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
iramar Fire-Rescue recently hosted its third annual Wolf Pack ALS competition. Leading the pack were Captain Tim Roche, Firefighters Frank Zelaya, and Rolando Agrenot, and Division Chief Jermaine McFarlane. Fourteen threemember teams from fire rescue departments all over the state, including one from New York, and an international team from Quito, Ecuador came down to South Florida to participate in the friendly competition which reenacted various medical emergency scenarios. These scenarios were staged at three
different venues within the city. The first situation was a car accident with multiple patients at the City of Miramar West Water Plant. The second was an urgent care matter, again with multiple patients, held at Occupational Medical Center, the department’s go-to medical office. The final location was at the Sunset Lakes Community Room where a high school party presented multiple problems needing immediate attention. The Miramar competition committee focused on designing patient conditions that have not yet been seen in other competitions. Not only did they want to create harder patient diagnoses, but they wanted to provide learning opportunities. At the end of every competition, all teams received a patient summary packet that reviewed patient conditions, treatments, and learning points. Although Miramar did not win, they were thrilled to take on the challenge of hosting. After years of competing in
numerous venues, the team wanted to develop a fun, yet high-quality and challenging event in unique environments. The committee hopes that paramedics competing learn something to carry over to their future patient care. “One of the best ways for any paramedic agency to cultivate growth is for an organization to support a competition team. Not only does a competition team increase the knowledge and skills of the members, but it also enhances teamwork and problem-solving. In addition, many of these team members will promote through the ranks in the organization and the skills developed during the years of competing will serve as a foundation for their success as a leader within the organization,” explained Captain Roche. “Miramar Fire-Rescue Department has had a long history and tradition of competing in EMS competitions. The hard work and dedication have earned the Miramar team multiple State, National, and

International first place championships. It has also promoted a culture of innovation and excellence in EMS.” The entire day was made possible by over one hundred volunteer Broward and Miami-Dade firefighters and local high school and college students from EMS programs. Memorial Hospital System donated food and water and supplied t-shirts. Money raised from the entrance fees will support the Miramar ALS competition team for travel competitions throughout Florida, the United States, as well as international opportunities.

DENTAL HEALTH
Your Mouth - A Gateway to a Healthier Body BY DR. ISABEL SUATE esearch has firmly established a direct connection between oral health and other systemic diseases. There are about 200 possible relationships between both, including major health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and pulmonary disorders. There are more than 700 species of bacteria that live in the mouth, for the most part harmless, but there are also some harmful microorganisms that thrive when there is a poor oral hygiene. When bacteria are left undisturbed by lack or inadequate oral hygiene, the bacteria quickly increase in number and they create an intricate network of layers that develops into a sticky biofilm, which is the major cause of periodontal disease (infection of the tissues that surround the teeth). The bacteria in the biofilm provokes an immune response resulting in localized inflammation and it’s through these inflamed areas that the oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body when tooth brushing, chewing food or during dental procedures. What happens when harmful oral bacteria reach the heart? They can invade heart and vascular tissue and induce clumping of blood platelets, which leads to thrombus formation. Also, the substances produced by these harmful bacteria can make the arteries more permeable and stickier, making it easier for bad cholesterol to invade and get trapped, resulting on an increased risk for heart attacks or strokes. People with periodontal disease have a 25% higher risk to develop heart issues than people with a healthy mouth. What about diabetes? Patients with periodontal infection have worse glycemic control, as the inflammatory products are associated with insulin resistance. Also, people affected by this metabolic disorder have twice the risk for developing periodontal disease and it can progress more rapidly and more severely. Once periodontal disease is treated glycemic control improve, so dental control should be part of the standard treatment of the diabetic patient. What about pulmonary disease? The elderly are at most risk, as the bacteria of the oral biofilm can get into the respiratory tract and cause infections like pneumonia and bronchitis when aspirated. Meticulous oral home care is essential in the prevention of these infections by reducing the potential number of bacteria that could be aspirated. Just like these mentioned diseases, research also links poor oral health with dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and complications with pregnancy like preterm birth and low weight at birth. Hence, the treatment of periodontal disease is evolving to be an integral component of comprehensive medical care. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) half of Americans, over 30 years old have some degree of periodontal disease. It is diagnosed by a dentist based on a radiographic exam, visual assessment, and measuring gums with a periodontal probe and bacteriological tests to identify harmful bacteria. Early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease not only will preserve your teeth, but it will take you to a healthier systemic health.

Doggone Miracle – Holiday Wishes Do Come True! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t was a holiday miracle when Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption received two grants totaling $15,000 as part of the Petco Foundation “2018 Holiday Wishes Campaign”. The generous foundation awarded fifty-one grants across the country totaling $755,000 to support the year-round lifesaving efforts of animal welfare organizations. Part of the $15,000 grant was made possible by the Duncan Family of Miramar. Diane Duncan submitted a story about how her adopted greyhound Sa-id offers a therapeutic presence for her teenage triplets diagnosed with Autism and anxiety. The essay resulted
in a $10,000 grant for the South Florida non-profit 501(c)3 organization and a shopping spree at Petco for their pups. Since 1995 Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption has been saving retired racing greyhounds that otherwise would have been destroyed. The program rescues, treats, rehabilitates, socializes, and trains these special canines for their new life as loving family members. Additionally, they offer support for life to those families that opened their hearts and their homes, as well as educate the public about adopting and caring for these sweet-natured creatures. Six years ago, Diane Duncan was introduced to Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption and adopted Sa-id, her family’s very first greyhound. Their love for Sa-id and the positive changes he brought to the family made them want more. So, they
adopted retired racing Greyhounds Vera and Cary followed by rescued Italian Greyhounds Daisy and G.G. making them a family of ten. “We could not have anticipated the changes that would take place in our family as the result of this one simple adoption. Sa-id brought so much joy to our children’s lives, and he gave each of them a new-found sense of purpose and confidence,” exclaimed Duncan. “We took Sa-id everywhere, from vacations to ice cream shops, and he quickly became their new best friend. The neighborhood kids loved to come over and visit with our new gentle giant. He quickly became the center of our children’s world.” The Duncan children have ben-
efited tremendously since having the dogs. They volunteer at adoption events, wash dogs at fundraising events, serve food at Hollydogs’ annual picnic, and share their story while trying to find fur-ever homes for other Greyhounds. “These volunteering opportunities have helped Alex, Nicolas, and Emma overcome many social challenges as they interact with both people and dogs for a very worthwhile cause. Emma, now 14, volunteers at a local animal rehabilitation center and has been inspired by dog ownership to someday open and run a rescue facility of her own. We are so grateful that Sa-id joined our family six years ago. He was truly the start of something (really) good,” added Duncan.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Happy New Year Miramar!
“MAX”
BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER
M
iramar Fire Rescue hopes 2019 brings you good health and prosperity. On that note, let us remind you of a few safety tips to make these wishes for you and your family come true. With the winter months upon us, we look forward to a much-needed break in the hot weather. And though it doesn’t snow in South Florida, we can see a few nights of freezing weather. Miramar Fire Rescue would like everyone to take the time to be prepared during this season by following these important tips: Protect People - Being in the cold weather for long periods of time can be dangerous if you are not properly prepared, especially for seniors and children. Remember to dress in loose fitting warm layers if you will be outdoors for long periods of time. Don’t forget that hat! Forty percent of your body heat is lost through your head. Protect Plants - Here in South Florida we have a variety of beautiful tropical plants, but they do not do well in freezing weather. Make sure to bring them inside or to cover them up with sheets, tarps or blankets to keep them from freezing. Protect Pets - Remember our furry family members, they get cold too. Like us, they have acclimated to warmer temperatures and so they too struggle with cold weather unlike their counterparts from up north. Please bring your pets indoors and if this isn’t possible, provide them with an enclosed warm shelter. Practice Fire Safety - This time a year we get to use our heaters, and fireplaces. It has been a year since we used them last and dust probably has built up on those coils. You will smell the dust burning when you first turn the heaters on. If a lot of dust has built up, sometimes this can cause a fire. Please do not leave your heaters running if you are leaving your homes. Portable space heaters are another option to warm up. Never leave a space heater unattended, especially around children and pets. Also, keep your heaters at least three feet away from all furniture, curtains or blankets. The rule is the same for space heaters as well, always turn them off before leaving your home or before going to bed. For those that have fireplaces, have your chimney professionally inspected. Creosote is a flammable material created from burning wood that can build up over time and cause a fire. A professional can advise you how to have your chimney professionally cleaned so that you can enjoy your fireplace and keep the fire in the hearth, where it belongs. This is my beautiful potbelly pig Abby. She is about 1 1/2 years old. She has the sweetest heart, she loves to give snout kisses, snack on grapes and cherry tomatoes and sleep with her stuffed pig. She loves to roll and play with my English bulldog. I just got two baby potbellies a few months ago and Abby is the best “surrogate mom”. She watches them to make sure there OK, and cuddles with them at night!

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year Miramar! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR he City of Miramar has had a remarkable 2018. Our population growth has surpassed 142,000 and ranks as the 13th largest city in Florida. Public services continue to increase and improve for residents, continuing our positive track since the economic recession. The city welcomed a number of new businesses both large and small and I would like to highlight United Data Technologies and 3Z Telecom for further expanding the city’s reach into the Information Technology Sector. The average salaries of those firms exceed $70,000 per year. Miramar’s stellar record of attracting successful companies with high paying jobs further underscores that the decision to focus on commercial and office space as opposed to mostly retail keeps us viable and sustainable. No other city in the region competes with Miramar in this area. As we usher in a new year, this is the perfect time to set goals to make our 2019 even greater. Just as you make personal resolutions, the City of Miramar must continue to resolve to be a wonderful place to live, work, visit and play as well. Our goals and vision should far exceed the status quo. If successful, Miramar will continue to be a national leader as a diverse community offering an amazing quality of life. Last year, I asked residents to imagine our city offering our youth exposure to the high paying industries located in our city. I also asked us to imagine Miramar being a tourist destination by expanding sports tourism while offering high-performance training to our residents. We accomplished each and even more! Just last month, “Mayor Wayne Messam’s Aviation Expo”, presented by our hometown airline, Spirit, showcased STEM careers to youth of all ages and the community. In addition, Miramar Regional Park hosted the Battle National Youth Football Tournament with sixty-two teams competing from as far as Los Angeles. So, what’s in store for 2019? There are a few developments worth mentioning: I am committed to making Miramar a “Smart City” and working with our city staff ensure Miramar is preparing for the next twenty-five years. We are identifying the infrastructure and technological needs that will best prepare Miramar for 5G, autonomous vehicles and exploring the many options available to us to effectively use data in our planning and decision making. By making the necessary investments today, we ensure that the future of Miramar can be even brighter than today, and that’s pretty bright. We must act with a sense of urgency for - the successful companies that will exist twenty-five years from now - haven’t even been created. When they arrive, we want to be ready. Stay tuned as the city will engage residents and the business community to get input from you. We want to know how you envision Miramar in 2040 and what services you want to have. I truly believe when we work together, there is nothing we cannot achieve. Send me your ideas directly to wmessam@miramarfl. gov. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what we can do together. Make sure to follow me on Twitter & Instagram: @WAYNEMESSAM or FaceBook: / MayorWayneMessam Yours in Service,

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Do I Need a Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
S
hould I consider creating a trust even though I don’t have a multi-million-dollar estate? Gone are the days that revocable living trusts were only for wealthy individuals. Why? Because it’s now less about avoiding estate taxes and more about the cost savings and protections that trusts can provide. And a properly drafted and funded trust avoids the expense, delay and loss of privacy of probate. The following scenarios help my clients understand why a revocable living trust may be their best option. Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny, happily married for 25 years with three children - Jessica, 20; Josh, 15; and Jonathan, 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children in equal shares. Sounds like a logical plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear ends a bus full of trial attorneys heading to the annual Ft. Lauderdale “I’ll See You in Court Convention.” Several of the attorneys are injured and, predictably, lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children.
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

954.885.0085 In another sad scenario, imagine that Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s children. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement and grandchildren, but unfortunately, they are not fond of Jessica’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and be dependent on their daughter Jessica to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to Jessica and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of Jessica’s inheritance could be lost to her “no good husband.” If George and Jenny leave the inheritances to their children in a trust, these assets will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, daughter Jessica’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and partial distribution to Robert. Speak with a qualified estate planning attorney to see if a trust is right for your family situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Miramar Residents, Thank You for an Amazing 2018! BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS his past year, the Miramar Police Department worked collaboratively with various community sponsors, schools, businesses and other governmental agencies to provide toys, books, clothing, meals and financial assistance to needy families, sick children and at-risk youth. Working as a team is one of the Miramar Police Department’s primary principles. Our community is part of that team. With your help we have proven to be one of the leading philanthropic police agencies in the tri-county area. As we enter 2019, many ambitious goals are set as New Year’s resolutions. Many of you may want to exercise more, lose weight, spend less and save more. Unfortunately, all too often New Year’s resolutions tend to fall by the wayside. In fact, studies suggest that less than 10% of resolutions are achieved – leaving us unfulfilled and with a sense of failure. As a Miramar resident, I am asking that instead of choosing the same resolution year after year - with the same results - choose a new resolution that could greatly impact not only your life, but others as well. Choose a New Year’s resolution that will counteract the effects of stress, make you happier and healthier: consider volunteering. PuzzleJunction.com Dedicating your efforts to the betterment of our community, our families and the various social programs can make a difference. It did for me. As a child, I frequently attended after-school community programs while my single mother worked. The volunteers at the program 5:13 PM centers impacted my life greatly and are part of the reason why I am who I am today. Volunteering not only strengthens communities, but it may help you develop new skills, advance your career, and lead to a healthier body. Studies have shown that those who volunteer have greater functional ability, lower rates of depression, increased self-confidence and simply smile more. My charge to our community for 2019 is to empower all citizens to be greater than themselves and give selflessly. Choose to have a deeper, more meaningful connection with a sense of purpose. Volunteering does not mean you have to dedicate a lot of time. Find what works for you and commit to that. Giving even in simple ways can help those in need. Whether you volunteer your time to our youth programs, community outreach, or mentoring a child, know that your efforts will be valued. At the Miramar Police Department, our volunteers are like family. We hold them near and dear to our hearts and appreciate every minute they dedicate to serving our community. I hope 2019 is the year you invest not only in you, but in others as well. Sincerely, Chief Dexter Williams Miramar Police Department “Serving Our Community”

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently
dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot
your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores
because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm.
