“One Night in Memphis” Takes Audience Back in Time BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he Miramar Cultural Center hosted the performance of “One Night in Memphis” January 4th as the first show of the year! Hundreds were entertained for more than an hour and a half by a performance that took them back to a time when young stars were on the rise. In a tweet from the Cultural Center they said, “One Night in Memphis took us back in time to 1956, and we rocked our hips to every riff!” John Mueller, who performs as Carl Perkins, created the show and is also the music director. It is the #1 official tribute to Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. John is also well-known for his “Winter Dance Party” show, the only one endorsed by the estates of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson. Mueller developed “One Night in Memphis” in 2012 following the success of “Winter Dance Party.” It immediately became a hit! Mr. Mueller studied theater and music and has had a successful career in both arenas. He’s been in the industry since 1999 and although he’s had many acting parts, his true passion lies with music and a love for the sounds of the 1950s. He cited a quote by Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) who was not only an actor but had an astounding baritone voice. Nabors is

quoted as saying, “I’ve never considered myself an Jerry Lee Lewis, a yet-unknown hired as pianist, the actor; I get much more immediate satisfaction singing. others wandered in. First was Johnny Cash then Elvis If you sing good, people clap.” Presley. None had met before. But the result was an impromptu jam session that was truly “magical.” Unknown to the entertainers, Sam Phillips kept recording. The recording is a monument to four young American legends and their talents. Today it’s now memorialized in this concert.

Other Cast Members

The Historical Beginning John was fascinated by the night of December 4, 1956. This night, more than 61 years ago, a magical event occurred. It was a merging of rock-n-roll, R&B, Gospel, and Country music. All at one time, in one place, and entirely unplanned, four young musicians united by accident at Sam Phillip’s Sun Studios. During a recording session for Carl Perkins with

Alex Swindle, from Alabama, is 23 and portrays Elvis Presley. Swindle has ten years of performing as an Elvis Tribute Artist. As a true Southern gentleman, he brings the thrill and charm to the stage reminiscent of Elvis in his early recording days. Born outside of St. Louis, Missouri, Shawn Barker performs as the legendary Johnny Cash, “The Man in Black.” He is well-known for his authentic Cash tributes and maintains a friendship with W.S. Holland, Johnny’s original drummer. Blair Carman, from Cincinnati began playing piano at 12 years old. Representing Jerry Lee Lewis, he’s in high demand not only nationally but internationally. He grew to love 1950’s rock-n-roll listening to his parents’ 45 vinyl records. T o read more about the concert, go to https://presleyperkinslewiscash.net

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Wouldn’t You Like To Get Rid Of That Excess Fat FAST?

DENNIS LOST 40 POUNDS IN SIX WEEKS. BY JOHN BRODIE

W

ith the celebrating of the holidays behind us, the New Year is a great time to focus on your health and wellbeing. For many people losing weight is the big objective. We live in a country where a great many people weigh more that they should. If you have been wishing you could get rid of some excess fat but have had little success with dieting, Slender Fit U is the answer! For many years now Slender Fit U has been helping their clients to lose weight and even reduce or eliminate medications with an easy medically supervised weight loss program. When I was on the diet I lost nearly a pound a day for the 46 days I was on the program. Forty pounds in forty six days! The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. During the program you will be monitored regularly and coached on what to eat to maximize the effectiveness of the program. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher is often referred to as the “HCG Guru”. A little over 10 years ago Geri quickly lost the extra pounds she wanted to get rid of with an HCG program and she got very excited about helping others do the same thing. In 2010 she opened an office in Davie and a few years later a second office in Coral Springs. Asked for some comments on the program, Ms. Kelleher stated, “The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals. We stay involved with all of our clients; one of the reasons for our high success rate is that we make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods.” Here’s a quote from one of Slender Fit U’s clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” 14 FEBRUARY 2018 | OURCITYMIRAMAR.COM

ROSA LOST 45 POUNDS IN NINE WEEKS. There are two programs to choose from. On the 23 day program women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. In the 46 day program the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40 – 50 pounds for men. Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG / B12 program you will go on a three week maintenance program gradually introducing a higher calorie diet where you will make sure that you do not gain any more than 2 or 3 pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism and in addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You will also lose the inches around the waist and thighs where excess fat tends to collect. Before starting the diet you will get a physical exam from one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. So how does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low calorie diet during the 23 or 46 day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Because it is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects but eating regular foods like eggs, chicken and fish, green vegetables, apples and so forth. Most people experience little or no hunger during the Slender Fit U program because thanks to the HCG they are burning anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat. If you are ready to be on a diet program that really works and works very fast without a lot of exercise and hunger pains, come in and visit Geri Kelleher for a consultation. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.

The Ladies in Blue Making a Difference and Blaze New Paths in Miramar BY HELEN PENLAND

ou may ask yourself, “Who are those ladies in blue?” Perhaps it was at the Hurricane Irma Town Hall, or at the Mayor’s 3K Walk. Or one of many other volunteer opportunities. They are members of the Upsilon Alpha Zeta Chapter, part of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The international organization for women was instituted on principles of service, scholarship, sisterhood, and “finer womanhood” in 1920. The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is very proud of its ability to transform communities through member volunteer projects. There are hundreds of chapters Sorority members after completing the Mayor’s 3K Walk/Run

across the globe and they can boast a membership of more than 125,000 women. The local chapter began in December 2004 serving Miramar and surrounding areas. Upsilon Alpha Zeta is made up of highlyeducated professionals whose careers run the gamut. Their professions include attorneys, pharmacists, educators, psychologists, law enforcement officers plus. Most important is they are your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Presently the chapter’s president is Dr. Tiffini Ferdinand, a specialty pharmacist. The group’s primary goals are to give back to the community by providing scholarships to outstanding high school seniors. They have given more than $20,000 in scholarships during the last 13 years. The highlight of the year-end luncheon in 2017 was the presentation of four scholarships to superior recipients. According to information received from Dr. Ferdinand, outstanding students are: ▸▸ 1st place: Kimberly Mungal (Miramar High School - $1200), ▸▸ 2nd place: Maria Schweitzer (Flanagan High School - $1000), ▸▸ 3rd place: Jessica Napoles (West Broward High School - $600). The chapter also presented its “Rising Dove”

award to Faxie Charles (Perry High School - $500). Upsilon Alpha Zeta Chapter regularly participates in local charitable activities. You may have seen their signature blue shirts at the March for Babies, Relay for Life, or Step Out to Fight Diabetes walks. They also donate to Women Veterans Walk and St. Jude’s Children Hospital. The Wigs for Awareness campaign continuously collects wigs for donation to American Cancer Society. As a testimony to their dedication to working for the community, the “Ladies in Blue” have volunteered with the Veterans Nursing Home, the City of Miramar Adult Daycare Center, and Youth Auxiliary Mentorship program. The Upsilon Alpha Zeta chapter members have the common objective of inspiring their local neighborhoods, the society in whole through service and guidance. At the same time, they nurture sisterhood though activities that build positive relationships. So, the next time you see these ladies in blue, say “hi.” You just might be talking to a Zeta. Meet Team Members at Miramar Community Garden – Helping Foster Healthy Living BY HELEN PENLAND

M

eet some of the team members that keep the Miramar Community Garden (MCG) successfully “growing!” By educating the community about micro-gardening, they gear participants and volunteers to take control of what they eat. Let’s start with Elsi Rose, Development and Capital Management Coordinator. Elsi has worked with the garden since its inception in 2010. She is the driving force behind all efforts to maintain the garden, from planting to harvesting. She also helps develop projects called “Taste of the Garden” events. At a Mini Sip & Taste for second graders at Fairway Elementary School, MCG partnered with Slow Food Glades to Coast dedicated to developing children’s palates for fresh food. The objective was to foster a new generation of “informed eaters.” Due to the fast-pace of peoples’ lives with less time to cook, we’ve seen an onslaught of fast food restaurants and frozen meals filled with preservatives. Although they are meant to be convenient, meals often lack the nutritional value we need to maintain good health. Chef Irie (Hugh Sinclair), a well-known guest chef, has a strong connection with MCG and he’s on a mis-

sion. He grew up on a sugar estate in Jamaica where his dad was always planting, growing something! From yams to peanuts or mango trees, the chef’s parents always encouraged self-sustenance and fresh food. The bond he has with the garden helps him reconnect with his childhood. Unfortunately, today when children are asked if they know where their food comes from, they frequently reply “from the grocery store.” Dismayed by this answer, his mission is to share stories about people, food, and traditions. The disconnect between gardens and commercial grocery stores is widespread. He noted, “As consumers, we need to get back to a place of normalcy, a place where we understand totally everything about the foods we eat. Understanding what we eat, where it comes, who produces it, who sells it. Within all of that, we should also be educating our children on the basics of food. No. Chicken, beef, and fish were not grown in a supermarket.” Trinity Trisolino began as a volunteer. After a traumatic event in her life, she discovered that coming to the garden helped her heal. It was the calming effect that came from her volunteerism that kept her going

back. After a few months she was hired as a permanent employee as Community Garden Aide. She is a micro farmer with 60 grow pots of crops behind her home. According to her, “With grow pots, you can effectively mix soil specifically for the plants’ needs. And you don’t pay for chemically-treated vegetables bought at groceries.” She regularly welcomes neighbors to come to the garden and volunteer. For more information about urban micro-farming, grow pots, or schedule a field trip for children, call 954-602-3270 or email Elsi Rose at erose@miramarfl.gov. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Lots of Love in Miramar BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

F

ebruary is Black History Month, and is the time the nation pauses to recognize the many contributions African Americans have made to the United States of America. Because of Black History Month, many Americans have come to learn that African Americans were instrumental in building this nation in every aspect of society despite being brought to America involuntarily as slaves. Accomplishments include many inventions, contributions to science, urbanization and many more. I take this opportunity to invite Miramarians to consider taking a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to learn more about Black History and what it truly means. The Smithsonian Museum has the world’s largest collection of exhibits and artifacts that document the journey of African Americans in this country. Learn more about how Blacks endured slavery, the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights struggle all while contributing to society which has led to America as we know it today. Visit their website at www.nmaahc.si.edu for more details.

Shirley Branca Park will host a concert on February 3rd from 6:00pm – 9:00pm with Regina Bell, Case, Deep Fried Funk and hosted by Tamara G. We invite all residents to join us for this event. Our police department has created an annual scholarship program called “Hoops for Hope” where basketball teams comprised of our City Youth compete for various prizes with the main goal of proceeds benefitting education. Youth from one of my initiative programs, “My Brother’s Keeper”, will participate as well. This takes place on Feb. 9th from 5:00pm to 10:00pm at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center, please stop by and support the effort. Coming up in March is my Annual 3K Run/Walk, Health and Yoga Fair. It is a wonderful opportunity to kick off a fitness program, continue if you’ve already started or just get out with the family and make new friends. Over 1200 residents and visitors will attend participating in cooking and light exercise demonstrations, and this year we will add a professional body building showcase. This event takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17th, from 8:00am to 1:00pm. First Lady Angela and I wish you and your family a very special Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Please remember all your loved ones. I look forward to seeing you at any or all of the upcoming events in our great City. Enjoy! Yours in Service,

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Business Succession Planning BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

D

o you have a family business? If so, you face some unique challenges to protect and preserve your business for your family. An owner’s death, retirement, divorce or disability can create serious problems for a family-owned business. Your business that took years to build could be destroyed overnight. In the United States, more than 9 out of 10 businesses are family-owned or controlled. Yet the sad reality is that most family businesses do not outlive their founders. More than two-thirds of all businesses fail after control transfers from the founders to their children. The likelihood that a family business survives after reaching the grandchildren is extremely low. Why such a dismal success rate? There are a variety of reasons, but often the failures can be traced to three causes: people, planning, and cash.

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

People The personalities in every family business can mean the difference between its continued success and possible failure. If a founder wants or needs to retire, who has been groomed to step up? Will it be your spouse, an unrelated partner, or one or more of your children? And if more than one person is to take over, do they get along?

Planning How will the retiring founder fund his or her retirement? Careful planning about how and when the transfer is accomplished should take into consideration cash and taxes as well as other personal issues. Will the retiring founder remain involved or provide continuing consulting services? Does the business transfer as the result of a sale or a gift? How should the founder’s children who are not becoming part of the business succession plan be treated? Where will their inheritance come from? What are the consequences of a non-involved son or daughter inheriting partial ownership of the business that a sibling or unrelated third party may be running?

Contact Us Today

Cash When the owner dies or retires, the plan to transfer a family business to others to own and operate is largely dependent on cash. How is the price set? Is there a buy/sell agreement in place? Does a surviving partner have rights to buy out the departing owner’s interest in the business? Is there life insurance in place to provide the cash when it is needed? Without careful cash planning, the business and surviving owners may find themselves in a tough position to come up with the assets to fund the retiring owner’s departure, or buy the deceased or disabled partner’s interest in the business. Speak with a qualified estate planning attorney to discuss your unique business situation. Business succession planning cannot guaranty a successful transition, but no planning will make the likelihood of success more remote. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. EYE CARE

Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and Eye Strain BY MICHAEL CHESEN, OD

T

he American Optometric Association (AOA) reports that over 7 out of 10 of the Americans that work each day from a computer monitor (about 143 million people) suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye strain. Prolonged computer use can result in eye stress and effect typical vision processes in kids and adults. If you are working at a computer longer than 2 hours each day, it is likely that you will suffer symptoms of computer vision syndrome.

Signs of CVS Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome include vision difficulties such as dry eyes, blurred vision, inability to focus or double vision and pain such as headaches, back aches and heavy eyes. If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms, you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome.

Eye fatigue from prolonged computer use is caused by the necessity for our visual processing pathways to adapt to processing text on a computer screen in a different way than they do for letters in print. While our eyes are used to focusing on printed material that contains solid black characters with sharp edges, they are less familiar with characters on a digital screen that lack the same degree of contrast and sharpness. Words on a screen are created by combinations of tiny dots of light (pixels), which are most luminous at the center and diminish in intensity toward the edges. Therefore it is harder for our eyes to focus on these images. Instead, our eyes reduce focus to the ‘’resting point of accommodation’’ or RPA. Our eyes involuntarily adjust to the RPA and then have to make a great effort to regain focus on the text. The continuous strain on the muscles of the eyes to focus results in the fatigue and eye strain that is sometimes present during and after use of a computer or digital device. CVS isn’t a matter of concern just for those who spend a lot of time on computers. Other electronic gadgets such as smart phones or tablets can cause similar conditions and in some cases even worse. Since mobile screens are often small, in addition to pixilated, the user often strains even more to focus on images.

Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Strain If you think that you might be at risk for CVS, you should make an appointment with an eye care professional sooner than later. At a computer vision exam, your eye care professional will perform tests to detect any particular vision problems that might worsen symptoms of computer eye strain. Depending on the results of these tests, your optometrist may prescribe prescription computer eyeglasses to reduce discomfort at your screen. An anti-reflective coating is highly recommended for computer glasses. An antireflective coating lessens glare that may interfere with your ability to focus on images on your screen.

Ergonomics for Computer Vision Syndrome Ergonomics, or changing your work environment to reduce strains in vision or posture, can help relieve some of the discomfort of computer vision syndrome. Proper lighting and frequent breaks will cause some relief. However, since ergonomics alone cannot resolve a visual problem, using ophthalmic computer eyeglasses is also necessary. If you think you are suffering from CVS or at risk of getting it, contact Dr. Chesen at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

Hilarious Family Stories Take Center Stage at Miramar Cultural Center BY HELEN PENLAND

W

hat a character! Or should we say “characters?” Candice Guardino’s latest work explains it all. But, there is more about that later in this article. Born and raised in Brooklyn and Staten Island, Ms. Guardino is a dynamo who brings her talent to entertainment in the areas of television, movies, and stage. Her love for performing comes to her rightly; she is the great niece of actor Harry Guardino. Candice has been entertaining most of her life, she recalls, as young as four years old. As a child, she acted in various plays and talent shows, eventually discovering it was her true passion a bit later in life. Her passion led Candice to study at Upright Citizen’s Brigade (UCB) in New York City and Los Angeles and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Screen Writing, Musical Theater, and TV/Film Production at Wagner College in New York City. Candice began writing during college while continuing to study and perform. Her hard work paid off tremendously. She landed many great writing and act-

ing assignments including playing the part of Agnes in the Broadway stage play “Gypsy.” Also influenced by superstars like Lilly Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg, Ms. Guardino started doing stand-up comedy telling stories about growing up with her Italian family. She said, “That’s what I do. I’m a storyteller.” Throughout her career, Candice has received fabulous reviews from a multitude of publications (New York Times, LA Times, and more) as well as other performers. Her latest work, Off-Broadway show “Italian Bred,” has received accolades from acting professionals such as Lorraine Bracco and Vincent Pastore, both known for their parts in the famous series “The Sopranos.” Ms. Guardino’s site quotes them as saying: ▸▸ “Incredibly funny. Real slice of life” – Actor Vincent Pastore ▸▸ “Love it more & more every time I see it!” – Actress, Lorraine Bracco The show is a compilation of her family stories and skits into one hysterically funny experience. Candice transitions from one character to another sharing events based on her life through the eyes of a young girl. Broadway World noted she wrote down everything her “loving and outspoken grandmother ever uttered,” and she combines this unfiltered wisdom with other experiences. The result is pure genius. “Italian Bred” premiered in New York in May of 2013. But the script is almost never the same. Every couple of months, Candice changes it, removing one skit and replacing it with another, changing the order, and adding new material. She says, “You don’t have to be Italian to relate to the show. People see their own families in it all the time.” So, be prepared to laugh until your sides hurt and enjoy! For tickets to the show go to http://www.miramarculturalcenter.org/calendar.aspx?EID=593.
