Fretting About Colonoscopy? New Prep Is Easier to Swallow. When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days.
• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Maric. “The clear liquids aid in that process.”
Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow.
• Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy.
Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Leyla Maric, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston maincampus. Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for Leyla Maric, MD cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Maric. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.
A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This means that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Maric. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.
For an appointment with Dr. Maric or another Cleveland Clinic digestive specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or schedule online at ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Digestive today. Cleveland Clinic Florida accepts most major insurances.

M
ayor Messam is the best example of practicing what he preaches. He continually wants to show the city that health and well-being are of utmost importance, and his goal of making residents #MiramarFit is having great reception. This year “Mayor Messam’s Health and Fitness Fair” has grown again due to more sponsorships and expected attendance. The free annual event, sponsored by Memorial Hospital Miramar, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and Aetna, will be held on Saturday, March 2nd from 6:00 am – noon. There are plenty of activities for the entire family. The morning will begin with a warm up and a 7:30

Attendees will receive giveaways and educational information on various ways to improve their health while learning how to have an active and healthy lifestyle. These screenings will include blood pressure, cholesterol, osteoporosis risk assessment, women’s imaging, and a few others. A variety of yoga sessions will also be taught. These techniques include Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Trap. Egyptian, and one for children. A Kids’ Zone will also have the little ones active with a rock-climbing wall, obstacle course, and of course face painting! This year a timed run has been added to the event and it is available for a nominal fee. This requested addition allows those who participate in marathons and timed races to also be a part of the group while giving others an opportunity to increase their stamina and reach for their goals. “I am very excited about this year’s annual fair because our goal of inspiring our residents to be fit is being accomplished. There’s nothing more important than your health and well-being and this event not only educates and informs you, but it will also inspire you as well. So,
bring the entire family and let’s get #MiramarFit!” exclaimed Messam. Furthermore, “Running for Mayor” has taken on a new meaning in Miramar. Residents have the opportunity to actually “Run for the Mayor by Running with the Mayor”. Mayor Messam invites anyone wanting to get fit and healthy to join him on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 5:00 am and Saturday mornings at 6:00 am at the Sunset Lakes Publix Parking Lot on 184th Avenue and Miramar Parkway for his “Run Club”. It may be early, but what better way to start the day with a great run around the community with one of the community’s instrumental leaders? n Mayor Messam’s Health & Fitness Fair will be held on March 2nd

Blaze of Glory – Miramar Fire Rescue Places in RIT Competition BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
his past January, seven members of the Miramar Fire Rescue team participated in the 24th annual Fire Rescue East Fire Conference in Daytona Beach. The team members were Captain Jorge Llorens, Firefighter Frank Zeylaya, Firefighter Rolando Agrenot, Firefighter Daniel Slocum, and Firefighter Ryan Myers. During the four-day meeting, Miramar’s finest were able to interact with other firefighters from thirty-six states and Canada. In addition to attending educational and hands-on training programs for both fire and emergency services, the local heroes competed against twenty-seven other teams in the 7th annual RIT/RIC Competition.
Every fire-rescue department must have a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) on every active fire scene. This team has two or more firefighters dedicated solely to the search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. The competition sponsored by the FFCA and TNT Rescue Tools, Minerva Gear Cleaning, Mercedes Hose, MES Equipment and Municipal Fire Equipment, consisted of emergency medical scenarios, hazardous material, and rapid intervention teams. It began with a non-sequestered RIT basic skills competition in nine timed based events: Incident Command and Control, Accountability and Communications, Forcible Entry, Diminishing Clearance, Entanglement, Up/Downs, Wall Breach, Victim Rescue, Packaging and Removal, and Denver Drill. The top four teams with the fastest times would move on to the sequestered finals. The goal for the competition is to allow teams to show the skills needed, under a graded and timed format, for timely interven-
tion of a downed firefighter. The skills applied are the same that are used on fire grounds across the country. This competition is designed to go back to the “Basic Skills” of the individual firefighter along with the “Basic Tools” needed to rescue one of their own. From basic skills, such as SCBA confidence and search, to advanced skills, including assessing the downed firefighter and removal of a downed firefighter, Firefighter teams in this competition had to show their strengths in all of these skills. Despite the fact that this was a timed skills event and an evolution simulating the real world, competitors had to understand the assumption that all decisions, actions, and communications needed to be verbalized for scoring and timing on radio. All procedures had to be done and not simulated. This was the third year that Miramar competed in the RIT event. Although they placed eleventh out of twenty-eight, the team had much improvement from last year coming in at 9 minutes and 20 seconds, one minute off from the top three teams.

Flat Feet In Children, Teens And Adults BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
lat feet are caused by loose ligaments in the arch as well as trauma or weakening of tendons (Posterior Tibial) and ligaments (Spring) in the foot. Flatfooted children usually become flatfooted adults. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition as can tight hip and ITB muscles. Rheumatoid or Psoriatic arthritis can also cause the foot to flatten. Flat feet can cause you to have pain in the heel, arch, ankles, legs, knees and back. This is aggravated by standing and walking. Cramping in the legs, especially at night, premature fatigue during any type of activity, or a general lack of interest in participating in sports or even walking activities generally follow. Signs of flat feet include flattening of the arch when standing and the foot pointing excessively to the outside during gait. Flat feet are often associated with knock-knees and abnormal shoe wear. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen and there could be swelling on the inside of the foot and arch as the problem progresses. Problems related to flat feet include hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions. Lower back and knee problems can also be seen. Also, inactivity causing weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness may result, as well as arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back. Adults that are flatfooted generally are in poor physical shape and will almost always worsen over time. Their lack of activity because of pain or fatigue is the problem.
It is important to treat flatfooted people early, especially those with tight muscles whose feet also point out (Duck footed). Treatment includes proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and leg. Also, activity modification and weight reduction are critical. Physical therapy will improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. Lastly, surgery to correct the deformity and return the child, teen or adult to full or near function may be needed. This should NOT be a last resort in many cases. Prognosis is excellent in most cases if caught early. If seen late, the deformity can still be corrected allowing a return to activities of daily living without pain. Many flat feet are destructive over time which will have an adverse effect on one’s life and livelihood. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
Havin’ A Ball! Henry D. Perry Education Center Students Got Their Heads in the Game BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
ften times one must “go through hoops” to complete a large task, and School Resource Officer Daniel Herrera did just that. As a former public school teacher, he knew just what to do to mentor and inspire the students at the Henry D. Perry Education Center. Herrera’s idea came to him during his first year in his new position as a Resource Officer at the Miramar school. This particular school happens to be an alternative school where students come to recover credits, and/or because of disciplinary issues at their home school. Knowing that the student body is not generally fans of law enforcement, sparked the determined officer to get to know the students on a personal level despite their beliefs.
“Soon, the students and I developed a very good rapport. They got to know me, as we’d talk sports, tattoos, music, they started trusting me with personal issues. They realized I was not, as they say, ‘like every other cop’,” explained Herrera. “Given the fact that the school’s only athletic team is its high school basketball team, and that the school allows the whole student body to watch games played during the school day, I thought basketball would be a great tool to show there were many police officers like me, whom the students would get along with.” The first “Ballin’ for Unity” tournament was a slam dunk, so it was only natural for Herrera to put together another this year. The second annual game was recently played before the holidays. Although the Miramar Police Department won 57-54, both students and officers had a great time while developing a positive relationship. The basketball game allowed students to see officers out of uniform as “regular people” that they can engage, ask questions, and learn from. This type of approach offered a new perspective and a worthwhile experience and has become an anticipated sporting event at the school. “Like last year, it’s been my favorite work day of the year. Not only were both
games, competitive and close (Miramar Police won both by the way). But even more enjoyable was at the end of both games, when the players and police officers have lunch together. We talk about the game, we talk about life, we laugh, and at the end of the day, my mission is accomplished,” added Herrera.

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling
Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!
Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.
Fishing
There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping
Video Game Olympics
The Beach
Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.
Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 26 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM

What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Miramar Home Up for Sale Kim Cox
Remember not so long ago, when you could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then, to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a large profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the homeselling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most
homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free
1-855-603-3984 and enter 3000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

DENTAL HEALTH
Your Teeth and Your Pregnancy BY DR. ISABEL SUATE hile losing teeth is not a normal part of pregnancy, and many women make it through the entire pregnancy with no discomfort, pregnancy hormones do affect the mouth and can worsen some existing conditions or create new problems such as: ▸▸ Pregnancy Gingivitis - A mild form of gum disease as hormones make your gums more easily irritated by dental plaque, making the gums red, tender and bleed. If left untreated this can become a more serious form of gingivitis. If there is a pre-existing form of gingivitis or periodontal disease, it can really flare up. ▸▸ Loose Teeth -Some women may feel like their teeth are a little loose. Hormones can loosen the ligaments and bones that keep teeth in place, ▸▸ Pregnancy tumors – These are overgrowths of tissue on the gums and not at all cancer- related. It is most common in the second trimester due to excess plaque. The tissue has a raspberry-like appearance and they bleed easily. ▸▸ Tooth Decay - Higher risk for tooth decay occurs for several reasons. Eating more carbohydrates than usual and snacking more frequently exposes teeth to sugars increasing your risk for cavities. Also, morning sickness and vomiting increase the acid in your mouth, which weakens and erodes the enamel of your teeth. Although pregnancy puts moms-to-be at risk for dental issues, most typically go away after childbirth. It’s important to maintain good oral health before, during and after pregnancy by following some simple guidelines. ▸▸ Eat a healthy balanced diet and avoid sugary snacks even though cravings might kick in. It’s not only good for your teeth but yourself and your growing baby. The calcium needed for the growing baby comes primarily from the mother’s diet. ▸▸ Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. ▸▸ If you are dealing with morning sickness, instead of brushing your teeth right away, first rinse your mouth with a mix of 1 cup of water and 1 tsp of baking soda, spit and brush about 30 minutes later. This will neutralize the acids from the vomit and diminish their erosive damage. ▸▸ Visit your dentist regularly, you may benefit from more frequent cleanings during your pregnancy. It is safe to have dental treatment during pregnancy to prevent potential infections, and yes, it is safe to take needed x-rays during pregnancy using a protective apron. However, nowadays it is possible to check for cavities without radiation using a small transillumination device. For cosmetic procedures, like whitening, wait until your little one has arrived. Be sure to keep your dentist informed of any changes in your mouth as communication is key to making the best plan of care for your health and your baby’s. If you are not pregnant yet, but looking to be, make a dental appointment to have your examination, cleaning and treat any problems in advance of your pregnancy.

SCHOOL NEWS
Color Their World – “Mad for Color Art Show” Returns to Glades Middle School BY BEVERLY PERKINS
L
ast year marked the inaugural art show at Glades Middle School (GMS). The event was created by the school’s art teacher Linda Romero who came to the Miramar middle school three years ago when art classes were not even on the curriculum. She observed that her newly added art program needed funding and wanted to put together a fundraiser/exhibit to display her students’ artwork while raising the necessary funds. The determined art instructor invited the nearby elementary schools, parents, students, and the community. Between 300-400 people attended and over 200 pieces of artwork made by the 6th-8th- grade students were on display. A total of $600 was raised and all the funds were used to purchase art supplies for the art students. “Ms. Romero has transformed the culture of our school and has inspired students to reach their highest aspirations. The GMS Art Show is a direct reflection of Ms. Romero’s vision and dedication for our students. We are blessed to have her on our
staff,” stated Principal Ricardo Santana. Being that the first showcase was so successful, Ms. Romero and her students are preparing for their second one which will be held on Wednesday, March 13th in the school’s cafeteria from 6:00 pm -7:45 pm. The anticipated event will also feature Cambridge Academy students’ work, “Science Through the Lens of Art”. “This year, my goal is to make the show bigger and better. We now have not just 2D and 3D classes, but an 8th grade high school level art class with such talented kids, large scale sculptures from our Cambridge students, work from all Art Club students, band and chorus performances, over twenty vendors, so many great sponsors who donated generous auction prizes including Sea World tickets, orthodontics, yoga, and more. Of course, there will be an art and silent auction, and food for sale. Plus, we have added a “Pie the Teacher” booth where Civics teacher Mr. Jenkins happily volunteered,” exclaimed Romero. Parents are asked to donate $5 for their child’s
artwork that they are taking home. They may also sign artwork release forms so others can buy their child’s art. Local gallery owner Betsy Frank made a purchase last year. “I’m very proud of all the hard work my kids have put into this show and their artwork, it pushes me to keep the program growing and growing. I’m so thankful to have such amazing support from my administration and my fellow teachers. They’ve all believed in me 100% and 100% of the proceeds go to the department,” added Romero.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Dry Season is Here! BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER
S
outh Florida is now in the dry season which can last until mid-June. This time of year, we do not get much rain and plenty of plants, bushes, and even our grass becomes very dry. Dry foliage is the perfect material for burning and can quickly become out of control. Over 90% of fires are started by humans either from yard waste burns, everyday activities like having a backyard cookout or even driving our cars. Miramar Fire Rescue would like to share some facts and tips on how to avoid preventable disasters when it comes to fire. The first thing Miramar Fire Rescue recommends is that you make a fivefoot perimeter around your entire home 100% free of dead vegetation. Remove all leaves, sticks, and twigs from the ground all the way up to the roof. This also includes your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned out of debris as well. We all like to make our yards look great and often have some kind of landscape with which we finish off with mulch. Mulch can be highly flammable since it is made up of decaying leaves, bark, or other compost. We recommend using rock or dirt borders in your landscaping. Rocks and dirt do not burn and are great alternatives. If you must use mulch, be sure to keep it well watered. Miramar Fire Rescue also recommends that your grill is placed away from your home, deck, and out from under any eaves or from any low hanging trees. Always keep your grill clean by removing any grease that may be accumulating in the bottom. Remember to let your coals completely cool before throwing them away and of course, never leave your grill unattended.
Another accidental way of causing a brush fire is from our cars. A lot of our roadways have grass and other plants that run alongside, and they dry out as well. When we pull off the road for whatever reason, the underside of cars is extremely hot and can easily ignite the dried-out material underneath. If you have to pull off the road, wait until you can safely do so over the pavement. Another unintentional way of starting a fire from our cars is when someone throws a cigarette butt from the window. The simple way to prevent this is plain and simple…DON’T DO IT! Also remember, brush fires can cause medical emergencies as well. When there are large brush fires, the smoke produced by the fire can cause respiratory problems. If you have asthma, COPD, emphysema, or other medical conditions that weaken your lungs, lingering smoke can cause you to be distressed. If your area is smoky, it’s best for you to stay indoors until all the smoke clears out. Miramar hopes you use our tips to help you enjoy the outdoors this time of year. And as always, you can contact Miramar Fire Rescue if you have any questions or concerns. Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. For more information please call (954) 602-4802. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1. Also, check us out at Miramarfd.org and follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Let’s Be Heard Miramar! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR have been very outspoken and active regarding Kanter Real Estate’s efforts to drill oil in close proximity to our great city. Recently, the First District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee overturned a previous Florida Department of Environmental Protection ruling that denied an oil drilling permit to Kanter Real Estate. Kanter, for those not familiar, is a Miami-based developer seeking permission to drill in the Florida Everglades just west of Miramar. I have led the opposition against this project, building a robust coalition of local residents, environmental advocates, county and city governments who are in front of the issue. I feel this deeply disappointing ruling threatens the public health, the environment and the quality of life of thousands of Floridians who proudly call Miramar and the surrounding area home. Drilling in our backyard will put our community’s drinking water at great risk and endanger the local economy despite misguided claims from Washington and profit-driven developers. The city is actively exploring legal steps to block any form of oil drilling in the nearby Everglades, a unique biological treasure that we must protect. We will keep fighting this just as we have for the past several years and continue putting our vital natural resources and the safety of our people first. On a happier note, I invite you, your family, and friends with the hope that you will attend the many upcoming City Events such as my Mayor’s Health & Fitness Fair on Saturday, March 2nd at City Hall. As always, the event includes a FREE 3K Run/ Walk, Health and Yoga Fair and by popular demand, we’ve added a timed 5K run for only $15. For additional information, please contact my office at 954-602-3151 or email elaroche@miramarfl.gov. One of the most important duties one holds as a resident is to participate in the elections of the city’s elected officials. Elections for the City of Miramar will take place on Tuesday, March 12th for Commission Seat 4 and Mayor Seat 5. You may visit the Broward Supervisor of Elections website at www.browardsoe.org to locate your precinct’s location. Don’t sit out this election, let your voice be heard. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Are You Single? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE f you are single you make up over 45 percent of the US population. Whether unmarried, divorced or widowed, single people have important estate planning issues to think about. If you have children, your decisions are a bit more complicated. Consider the following: ► Single with minor children: It is vital to designate whom you wish to serve as your child’s guardian. Think about this. Even if there is a surviving parent, they may not be your choice to serve as guardian. What about leaving assets to your minor children? Realistically, leaving an inheritance to minor children can be fraught with risks. Who manages the assets for your minor children? Should you select your ex-spouse or perhaps another family member? Often parents select one person to serve as guardian for minor children, name another individual to manage and invest assets for their children, and possibly choose a third to determine asset distributions. ► Single with adult children: When a child turns 18, legally he or she is fully capable of receiving their inheritance and making life decisions, such as selecting a college or managing and spending their own money. Do 401(k) and IRA accounts constitute a significant portion of your estate? Severe and irreversible tax consequences can result from careless withdrawals from these inherited assets by “young” beneficiaries. Do you have any concerns about your child inheriting a large amount of life insurance money? Parents of 18-year-olds recognize that while their child is technically an adult, it may be much too early to expect thoughtful decisions regarding their future and their finances.

► Single without children: If you are single without children, keep in mind that without the existence of a properly drafted and executed will, Florida law provides that your assets be inherited by your parents. If your parents do not survive you, your assets will be inherited by your surviving siblings. Having a will is essential if you wish to leave your assets to anyone other than your immediate family. ► Illness or disability: Whether you have children or not, there are important decisions to make regarding who is authorized by you to assist with medical and financial matters should you become ill or disabled. Advance legal directives, in the form of health care powers of attorney, durable powers of attorney, living wills and HIPAA releases, insure your bases are covered in various scenarios. Without such documents, urgent medical care, managing a business or your finances, and communicating with governmental agencies such as the IRS or Social Security Administration, may need to be determined by the court. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS he Miramar Police Department’s Code Compliance Division strives to maintain a desirable living and working environment. The division partners with residents, neighborhood associations, public service agencies and city departments to facilitate voluntary compliance of city ordinances. The following information has been developed to address some of the most frequently asked questions regarding code violations, as well as information on community outreach and assistance available to Miramar residents:
T
Lawn Maintenance ▸▸ Grass must be mowed regularly and cannot exceed six inches in height. ▸▸ Derelict & Inoperable Motor Vehicles ▸▸ Wrecked, partially dismantled or otherwise inoperable vehicles may not be stored except in a fully enclosed garage. Inoperable vehicles are subject to towing at the owner’s expense and property owners are subject to fines. Parking of Vehicles ▸▸ Passenger vehicles can be parked in a driveway, carport or garage. A vehicle may not be parked upon lawns. Recycle Paint Program ▸▸ The exterior of residential properties must be painted and kept free of mildew stains, chipping and peeling paint. ▸▸ The City of Miramar recycles paint collected through the city’s monthly household hazardous waste collection event. The collected paint is re-blended PuzzleJunction.com into high-quality exterior latex paint available all Miramar residents. ▸▸ Applicants must provide two forms of identification for the address where the paint will be used (e.g., driver’s license and utility bill). ▸▸ Applicants must complete and return a request form. The form is available online at https://www.miramarfl.gov/1325/FREE-Recycled-Paint or by emailing recycle@miramarfl.org. Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH
I
s focusing on health and well-being is at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this
was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit!

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

Puerto Rico is known for its countless cultural experiences, numerous historical locations, miles of white sandy beaches, and warm and friendly people. Old San Juan, the historic section of the country’s capital, is a must-see when visiting the Caribbean island. It’s rich in history and culture and walking tours are highly suggested in order to visit all the charming city landmarks. Myra made a little history of her own during her walk by taking a souvenir photo with Our City Miramar in front of the magnificent Raíces Fountain, also known as the Roots Fountain, which is located on the Paseo de la Princesa.
