Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2017, it was Farah Tejpar, MD estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, Medical Director for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.
Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.
Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. For an appointment with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.

South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance
O
n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Disney Goes to the Opera! Florida Grand Opera Family Day Scheduled at Miramar Cultural Center BY HELEN PENLAND
D
isney Goes to the Opera at the Miramar Cultural Center with the Florida Grand Opera! April 8th, where they will host the first Family Day at the cultural center from 1 to 3 p.m. America’s seventh-oldest opera company, Florida Grand Opera’s members donate their time to treat the community to a day at the opera! Family Day is free and open for all ages to participate. The Family Day program was made possible by a grant from PNC Bank Arts Alive in Broward County. Florida Grand Opera was one of five recipients out of 50 applicants. Susan Danis, General Director and CEO of the opera company, said the group holds Family Day events three to four times a year at different venues. Each one is unique so, it’s a surprise at each event. Last year, two were held in May; one was at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center and the other at Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Both were well attended as Susan explained people seem to be migrating from larger complexes such as the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and the Broward Performing Arts Center. They seem to find the smaller centers less difficult to navigate, venues are closer to home, and like the warmer environment. Danis noted, “Generally, every Family Day has four parts: stage makeup, stagecraft, singing demo to teach people how to sing in an operatic voice, and a crafts-based creative workshop.” According to Tamika Bickham, Communications and Audience Development Manager, here’s a brief itinerary of Miramar’s day.
▸▸ Lobby: FGO Welcome table (participants get an opera passport) ▸▸ Lobby: Step/Repeat (Backdrop for Costume display with hats for selfies) ▸▸ Lobby: Concessions & MCC Marketing table ▸▸ BH: Voice sessions with a keyboard (group voice experiences) ▸▸ Dressing Room: Stage Make-up under the lights ▸▸ Dressing Room: Costume tour ▸▸ Classroom: Make Opera Glasses (for use during the 30-minute FGO performance later that afternoon) ▸▸ Theater: 2:30 PM - 20-minute “Together We Are Miramar” video viewing (on screen) followed by a short 5-minute pause … ▸▸ Theater: 3:00 PM - FGO Mainstage Presentation Tameka Hobbs, a member of the Miramar Cultural Trust, spoke to us about the premier showing of “Together We Are Miramar.” They began working on the documentary in October, requesting participants to send in their own videos. Ultimately, video editor Kenny Riches put together 8 participant videos and created the documentary. It was directed by Stephen Kantrowitcz, Director at Miramar Cultural Center | ArtsPark. Miramar Holds Grand Opening and RibbonCutting Ceremony for New Fire Station 107 BY HELEN PENLAND
T
he City of Miramar proudly hosted the Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting ceremony for the new Fire Station 107 on Saturday, February 24th. The facility is located at 11811 Miramar Parkway and according to Chief Robert E. Palmer, “The location of Station 107 allows our emergency medical paramedics and firefighters to reach emergency situations in response to the growing and changing population of the city.” Its locale will help ensure emergency response units can answer calls quickly to the city’s growing population and development. The Mayor, City Commission, staff members, and guests attended the ceremony. The three-bay station is more than 14,000 square feet and is designed for maximum efficiency. Incorporated in this space is a 6,500 squarefoot Apparatus Bay. It also includes administrative offices as well as all the needs for rescue and fire-fighting personnel. The space contains a complete kitchen, dining area, exercise room, day room, pantries, bunk rooms for ten people, of course, shower and changing rooms, and
other amenities. There are also facilities for the public; a lobby, parking, restroom, and conference room are available for visitors. Fire Station 107 is a LEED Silver Certified building, living up to Miramar’s commitment to developing environment-friendly, tenable, and energy-efficient building designs. It’s visually appealing with red Apparatus Bay doors, backlit signage, red bike racks, and the beautiful Miramar Fire Rescue team seal. A public open house was held for all to visit on March 29th from 6-8 p.m. The event allowed people to interact with city firefighters, rescue teams, and personnel, tour the facility, and check out the new equipment. Light refreshments were served. Boundaries for the new Fire Station 107 are Red Road to 132nd Avenue and Pembroke Road to County Line Road. For more information, contact Natasha Hampton, Assistant City Manager of Employee and Public Relations at 954-548-0134.

Miramar High School’s Aviation Magnet Program Gives Students a Boost into the Industry BY HELEN PENLAND
O
ne of the services the City and Miramar High School offer students is the Aviation Magnet Program. The program is county-wide and transportation is provided for those students living south of Sunrise Boulevard. As most people know, Mayor Wayne Messam is a huge proponent of encouraging students to follow in footsteps of the early airmen and celebrates the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black unit of military fighter pilots. During December 2017, the Mayor held an Aviation Expo, and Miramar Cultural Center hosted an exhibit through both December ’17 and January ’18 honoring the Tuskegee Airmen. The expo was open to the public particularly students interested in careers in aviation Our City Miramar gained insight on the Aviation Magnet program when speaking to Mr. Ed Martin, who teaches the classes for the program. He is a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which is the country’s premier public service organization that carries out disaster relief and emergency services nationwide. They are committed to volunteering their time and expertise for the well-being of their respective communities and promoting aviation and associated fields through education. Capt. Martin has sponsored a Civil Air Patrol squadron at Miramar High School since October 2001. Civil Air Patrol is offered as an enrichment activity with 20-plus cadets. Cadets in the CAP are able to take up to five powered flights, get involved in competitions with other CAP units, and attend camps during winter and summer. He is honored to teach his students and he’s gratified when he speaks to former pupils who have moved on to be pilots for the military, independent corporations, and for commercial airlines. The Aviation Magnet Program’s purpose is to prepare students for many post-

secondary aviation programs that help give them a boost toward careers in the industry. Mr. Martin cited, “There is a great need for qualified pilots, mechanics, and many other aviation-related fields.” The curriculum includes options that prepare them for college, military careers, or technical programs. Academic courses are available at all levels including topics such as navigation, aerodynamics, flight theory, and meteorology. Every student at all grade level is required to take a mandatory aviation class each year, from Aerospace Technology 1 to Emery Riddle Aeronautical University’s dual enrollment. Students can earn up to 23 college credits from 10th grade through 12th grade. Airport Management, Aviation History, Principles of Aeronautical Science, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems are classes that gain each student three college credits. One of his present students, Jacob Carpio, commented, “Whether you dream of becoming a pilot or are curious about the industry, the Aviation Program at Miramar High school is a great way to get your foot in the cockpit! When I first entered the program, my knowledge of the area was minimal... as an active student in the program, I’ve been given many hands-on opportunities to exercise what I learn in the classroom and apply it effectively. Miramar High School’s Aviation Program is an ideal first step into the field of aviation.” For more information about the Aviation Magnet Program, call Miramar High School at (754) 3231350 or visit http://www.miramarhs.com/.

“Mad for Color” Art Festival Raises Funds for Media Center and Arts Program BY HELEN PENLAND
T
he first annual “Mad for Color” Art Festival was quite the hit at Glades Middle School on March 14th! The festival was held at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria where students’ artwork was on display and for sale to raise funds for the arts program and media center. The school advertised the event on multiple social media accounts, sent links to all the students’ families, and invited all near-by elementary and feeder schools. The festival was open to the public and even community businesses responded well. This event was sponsored and led by the art program (Linda Romero) and PTA board members. Community sponsors were: Andrew Acosta from PRMG Mortgage Lenders, The Tutoring Center, Taco Rico, First Choice TitleEugene Vigoa PA, Mari C. Rodriguez Realtor, Alex Eyebrows, IRI Nails, Sweet, Pamper Chef, 31 Gifts, and Rainbow Design. The school also held a Silent Auction with donations made by area businesses. The auction prizes were donated by: ▸▸ Westside Orthodontics – a basket with $1,500 discount towards braces treatment, water pick, and goodies.
20 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYMIRAMAR.COM
▸▸ Sea World tickets (4) Valued at $430.-00 ▸▸ Miami Heat – Autographed item ▸▸ Village Tavern – a $50 gift card ▸▸ Florida Marlins item ▸▸ Pack-N-Ship Worldwide (Miramar) – 1 year mailbox service
Although they hoped for 250-300 people to attend, there were about 350! Linda noted, “From my point of view, it was a truly successful event, parents were amazed, and students were beyond excited
to see their work and people donate money and buy artwork. There were parents wanting to bid on a few pieces of artwork because they loved them so much and even today I still have a few teachers and parents asking to please let them buy an artwork that wasn’t purchased.” The artwork sold made $600, which is committed to helping the Arts program. The funds raised by the PTA (food and silent auction) is dedicated to the renovation of media center. Ms. Romero sold the artwork with the help of another teacher, Ms. Farkas, and the help of volunteer students who would hand the artwork to parents and other buyers. To top the evening off, they had performances by Band, Chorus, and a duet performance song by two of their students. They also showcased a dance performance by students under the guidance of Ms. Neely, the cheerleading coach. To say it was a success is an understatement. Congratulations to Glades Middle School!

Glades Middle School Wins Congressional App Challenge for District 20 BY HELEN PENLAND
Representative Alcee Hastings announced the 20th Congressional District winner of the Congressional App Challenge. Teacher Valerie Crawford Meyer is proud of the students in her successful CS Discoveries class; two of her students won the challenge (CAC) for the District. She said, “Through the use of CODE.org and CS Discoveries, and working with my students, I am experiencing life-long learning.” Michael Viciedo and Jonathan Fernandez developed an application that won the award. The app, called “Aquaticlean,” came out on top. During the school’s 7th-grade honor Award Ceremony, Congressional Aide to Representative Hasting, Franklin Johnson, presented the awards to the boys.
About the Challenge
I
n August’s issue of last year, Our City Miramar published an article about teachers who attended the first TeacherCon, a conference for them to learn how to teach their students to code. The workshop provides hands-on “foundational experiences with computer science and the Code.org suite of tools.” Well, that conference really paid off for the Computer Science Discoveries class at Glades Middle School! On January 29th, the office of
22 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYMIRAMAR.COM
The CAC was first introduced to the public in 2013 when the House of Representatives passed a resolution with overwhelming bipartisan support. The House proceeded with a pilot program in 2014. The challenge is an effort to encourage students to learn coding and computer science through districtwide competitions hosted by members of Congress. Participating districts’ students must create (code) original applications for an opportunity to be selected by their Member of Congress, have work on display at the nation’s Capital, and win prizes. Altogether, 190
school districts in 42 states hosted the Congressional App Challenge. The competitions are conducted from July through early November and winners are announced in January of the following year. More than 4,100 students participated in the competitions in 2017, submitting over 1,270 student applications.
About the Winning App Michael and Jonathan created an app that tests salinity and purity of water, aptly named Aquaticlean. At this time, it is not fully functional but it does have a menu capacity, and its functions operate on both iOS and Android mobile systems. They built and explained exactly how the application works in a PowerPoint presentation. Its purpose is to test the levels of bacteria and chlorine in water. With this, people will know their water has no bacteria or a good amount of chlorine and is safe. When Acquaticlean is completely operational, it will have many uses. According to the boys, it can be used by anybody that has anything to do with water. For example, pool owners, pool maintenance workers, or water plant employees will find it simple to utilize and more accurate than manually testing the water. Our congratulations to Michael and Jonathan, their teacher, and the school. Clearly, they are living up to the school’s motto, “Soaring to New Heights with pride, passion, and purpose!”

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.
Causes:
▸▸ Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside. ▸▸ Children that are knock-kneed. ▸▸ Tight muscles, especially the calf, hamstrings and external rotator muscles of the hips.
Symptoms: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Many children who have been diagnosed with growing pains have primary causes that can be addressed with great success. Many of these children are not able to keep up with their peers during activity due to pain and premature fatigue and, ultimately, this may affect their self-esteem. They become more likely to sit at home and work with computers and are less likely to participate in sports. Inactive children usually become inactive adults who may be overweight. It is critical to understand why these children or teenagers are having leg discomfort and not have the problem brushed off as growing pains.
Treatment may include:
▸▸ Changing of shoe gear to add more support. ▸▸ Physical therapy to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength, coordination and reaction time. ▸▸ Custom molded orthotic (sole inserts) to realign the lower extremity. In many cases this will almost overnight eliminate a lot of the leg pains that these children experience. ▸▸ Casting the leg to stretch the calf muscle may be needed. ▸▸ When associated with flatfeet that is unresponsive to conservative care, surgery may be necessary to completely resolve the issues Early identification of predisposing causes to these growing pains is important to the child and teenager’s overall health and wellness. SPECIAL FEATURE - EDITORIAL
End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past
Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

My friends and I have started the #NeverAgain movement to ensure that nowhere else has to endure a tragedy like this, that nowhere else do people have to suffer the pain that we feel. Unfortunately, however, our cause has quickly been twisted into a partisan debate. Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of
Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

On another note, we seek to mentor and empower the youth in the City of Miramar. My office has two youth initiatives: The Miramar Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and My Brother’s Keeper (MBK). In both programs, academic excellence and civics are key components taught. Additionally, career choice and entrepreneurship are areas of focus, and I provide opportunities for our youth to meet local business professionals and take tours of our many Fortune 500 companies. This past quarter, Spirit Airlines opened the doors of their headquarters for our youth and allowed them to explore many aspects of their operations. CEO Bob Fornaro greeted the Miramar YAC and MBK participants along with his staff. They were encouraged to seek careers in aviation from being a pilot and air traffic control to IT, dispatch and more. Many of the career option salaries were in excess of $100,000, and the tour was enjoyed by all. It is my goal to retain our talented youth once they graduate from high school and college. There are so many wonderful career opportunities in Miramar and we want our youth to return to Miramar as adults to raise their own families. Yours in Service,

No matter your reason for initiating estate planning, it is imperative that you understand what your options are and how thoughtful estate planning can work for you. Your plan may be simple (just a will), or more complex (a revocable living trust). Let’s examine the estate planning process by exploring the areas we refer to as the three P’s of estate planning.

People Who are the important people in your life? They likely include your loved ones: your spouse or partner, children and grandchildren and perhaps your parents, siblings or other relatives. Beyond these individuals, your important “people” could also include charities, special causes, colleges or universities and/or churches or temples to which you are connected. For some, important people may also include beloved pets. Spend some time thinking about the impact others have had on your life. Make a list and jot notes. This is how the planning process begins.
Property We use the term property to refer to your assets in general. Start another list of the assets you own or control. At this point, you do not need to identify policy or account numbers, or exact dollar values, but rather think about your assets in terms of their nature (cash, stocks, bonds, businesses, real estate), their value and your ownership interest. Do you own assets in your name only, in joint tenancy with someone else or through some other arrangement? Be sure to include often overlooked assets such as life insurance, money owed to you and any inheritance you may expect to receive.

Plans After identifying the important people in your life and your property, the next step is to consider planning for your own incapacity or death. This step may be the most challenging. Who would you select to make decisions for you if you could no longer do so yourself? Would the same person handle your finances and your personal and health care decisions? Who would care for your minor children? Who will run your business? How would you distribute your assets to your “people?” Would you like to minimize the impact of estate taxes? How would you protect your beneficiaries from creditors and predators, and maximize the impact of a charitable bequest? Is there a member of your family with special needs whom you would like to provide for? Finally, is there someone who perhaps should not receive an outright inheritance, without third-party managed care and oversight? These are just a few of the issues to consider when approaching the planning process. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you explore all of these areas and work with you to develop a plan for your unique situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? id you know that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the foremost causes of vision loss in individuals over the age of 65? AMD is a condition that affects the macula of the retina which is responsible for clear central vision. Age-Related Macular Degeneration Indications The first warning signs of AMD are often fuzzy vision and spots in the center of vision. Since the symptoms typically come on slowly without any pain, symptoms may not be detected until more severe vision loss is apparent. For this reason, it is very important to schedule a routine eye examination, particularly after the age of 65. What are the Risk Factors for Age-Related Macular Degeneration? If you are of Caucasian decent, over 65 years of age, a smoker who consumes a diet low in nutrients or has family members that have had AMD, you are at higher risk of developing the disease. Any individual that is at increased risk should make certain to have a yearly eye exam. Discussing proper nutrition with your optometrist can also help lower your risk of developing AMD. Dry AMD and Wet AMD In general, AMD is typically diagnosed as either dry or wet. The dry form is found more frequently and may be a result of advanced age and macular tissue thinning or pigment build-up in the macula. The wet form is also known as neovascular age-related macular degeneration. It results from the growth of new blood vessels beneath the retina, which leak blood that destroys the retinal cells and results in blind spots in the central vision. Often wet AMD is the more serious of the two. Macular Degeneration Treatment While there isn’t cure for AMD, certain treatments exist that can delay the progression. Depending on whether one has dry or wet macular degeneration, the course of treatment may involve laser surgery or medical injections or in some cases, dietary supplements. In either case, early detection and treatment is essential. Dr. Chesen will also be able to recommend devices to help you deal with any visual difficulty that you have already sustained. Vision loss that cannot be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgical procedures is called low vision. There are a growing number of low vision devices that can be used today that can make everyday activities easier. You can save your vision by being aware of the risk factors and signs of AMD. Visit Dr. Michael Chesen to learn more about AMD and low vision. To make an appointment with Dr. Chesen, call 954-4379733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

“COUPER & BELLA”
of the
Month
Our boy Couper (left) and our girl Bella (right) are both 7 year old Chihuahuas. Couper loves his daddy best and Bella loves her mommy or anyone with food. Couper loves going on walks. Bella likes them as long as she gets a treat when they’re done. Both like having their fur blow dried each morning and dislike having their toenails clipped. They were last seen riding in the car to McDonald’s for an ice cream cone treat.
