Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2018, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Leonardo Oliveira, MD, sports health and running medicine specialist, to answer key questions about Leonardo Oliveira, MD running, and how runners of all types can prepare.
Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.
Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Oliveira in Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.597.2037 or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth to schedule online. For more information about Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth.
Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

People Are People Wherever You Go
W
e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. In the end, people are people everywhere you go. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Doggone Amazing – Miramar Fire-Rescue Teams Up with Canines for Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
lways searching for more ways to protect, serve, and educate the community, Miramar Fire-Rescue definitely has a ‘no bones about it’ approach. The ambitious department recently partnered with the Canines for Community Resilience Animal-Assisted Therapy Teams from the Humane Society of Broward County. These teams consist of volunteer handlers and their dogs who respond to high-intensity situations such as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) tragedy. Typically, these canine teams are not exposed to tragic incidents for such long durations. Being in such proximity to SWAT, firefighters, paramedics, and
other emergency response teams along with the overabundance of stress, fear, and adrenaline in such horrifying situations such as MSD have the intuitive pets overwhelmed just the same. Therefore, Miramar Fire-Rescue opened their doors and their hearts to the organization to help them get better acquainted. “The partnership that has been formed with Miramar Fire-Rescue and the Canines for Community Resilience program has multiple benefits. Not only does the ongoing training allow the handlers and the dogs to become more familiar with the fast-paced high energy scenes, but we also educate them so that they understand an emergency response department and why we do it,” explained Fire Chief Robert Palmer. Upon their visit to the station, the dogs are exposed to all the sights, sounds, and smells associated with the fire department. They also get to climb up on the trucks and meet the crew. All teams must meet multiple requirements and pass several tests to be in the program. “We turn on the lights and sirens, we flow water
through hose lines, we bunk out in fear gear and lay on the floor so the dogs can come up and check us out. While we work with the teams to better prepare them for future large-scale emergencies, we benefit as well because we all have the opportunity for a little cuddle time when the dogs are around,” exclaimed Gina Hudson, Firefighter Paramedic. “At the end of the day, it’s a win-win because we all get to cuddle with the dogs. I don’t care how tough of a firefighter they are, they will always cuddle with the canines!” “Our crews benefit from the training because they better understand what is gained from having these teams in place on a prolonged emergency scene. In recent years, the first responder world has learned how much PTSD affects us and those around us and these teams are another ‘tool’ that can be utilized in the ongoing awareness and treatment of PTSD,” added Palmer.

Flat feet are a primary source of ankle pain because of the stress that the foot puts on the inside of the ankle and the lower leg. Good supportive shoes and occasionally orthotics will help to give more support and stability. Many cases must be evaluated for potential long-term problems that may necessitate physical therapy or a surgical procedure. Growth plates are present on the inside and outside of the ankle. Injuries to the growth plate or fractures to the bone can occur during sports or general activities. Immediate care is necessary to prevent growth disturbances. Bones and growth plates out of position need to be placed back into the proper position to prevent any long-term problems. Ligament injuries are very common in sports. Ligaments connect the bones together and when the foot twists excessively ligaments can tear. These problems usually necessitate immobilization in a boot or cast to allow the ligaments to heal primarily. Cartilage injuries are rare but when pain in an ankle or foot persists MRIs are necessary to evaluate the bone, bone marrow and cartilage surfaces further. CT scans may also be necessary. Arthroscopic surgery may be necessary in some cases. Infections are rare but they can become very problematic. Any injury that
ing, heat and a generalized fever may need to be addressed immediately. In most cases, antibiotics alone will take care of an infection, but it is necessary to be seen immediately to prevent the need for more aggressive treatment. Inflammatory conditions that affect children must also need to be ruled out. Soft tissue and bone tumors are extremely rare, but if there are bumps or areas of swelling that are noticed they need to be evaluated quickly. The more quickly a child or teenager is evaluated for a foot, ankle or leg problem the better the prognosis. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. April Showers Bring May Flowers – Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Spring!

First things first, it’s important to clean and declutter the area before adding a comfortable seating area. For décor purposes it’s recommended to blend the exterior with the interior by utilizing similar colors, materials, and styles; therefore, expanding a home’s living space. Including weatherappropriate pillows and rugs along with some lighting and perhaps a fire pit and/or a waterfall item will soften and create a tranquil atmosphere. After giving your patio some panache, enhance it by freshening up the landscape. Planting flowers, vegetables and herbs will add beauty, life, color, and fragrance to any patio, deck or balcony. Believe it or not many annuals need full sun and some fruit trees thrive in warm climates. But if you’re not ready to get your hands dirty just go to your local home improvement store and buy ready grown potted ones. The Bougainvillea is the queen of large flowering shrubs. The colorful year-round plant can be planted in a variety of ways such as a tree, on a vine, or in a planter making it work well in any area.

Pentas are one of the easiest flowers to grow in Florida. The low-maintenance blooms produce a rainbow of clusters which are irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds. Evolvulus, also called Blue Daze, always make a good choice for Florida gardens because it is drought tolerant. Mexican Heather has become a Florida garden staple with its shiny, dark green foliage accented with charming lavender-pink or white flowers. Let’s not forget Florida’s official state flower, the Coreopsis, it is one of the cheeriest plants to grow and can be enjoyed all year.
Wrap herbs in ribbon or create a special homemade infusion to bring the hostess when invited to a springtime soiree. Another favorite thing to add to the outdoor space for spring and summer entertaining are heat loving herbs like basil, tarragon, thyme, sage, and parsley. Not only are they great for recipes like gazpacho, but they make perfect garnishes and fun herb-infused vodkas too. Serve them up at all your parties or give them as gifts. With Memorial Day upon us, use some of these inspiring ideas for spending some time outdoors on those hot spring/summer nights. Regardless if you are entertaining or just relaxing under the stars, it’s easy and affordable to dress up your outdoor space.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHEIF
Water Safety BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER
W
inter is now over, and it is time to start enjoying our water activities again. We would like to remind everyone of some safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable time in the water. Remember, not only do many homes here in South Florida have pools, but we also have many bodies of water including lakes, canals and of course the ocean. Each of these has their own safety concerns and should not be taken lightly. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4 and can be completely preventable. Let’s start with pools. Whether you own one or are using a community pool, the rules are the same. ▸▸ Never swim alone. Have a buddy with you or make sure a lifeguard is within eyesight. ▸▸ NEVER leave a child alone near water and never leave a child with another “older” child. If your child is missing and you live near water, check the water first! ▸▸ Remember things like water wings, floats, swim boards, and noodle are toys. Although they can aid you in swimming, you should never rely on them completely. ▸▸ Ensure children and or guests follow rules like “no diving” or “no running” around the pool. Often, the concrete becomes wet from water that has splashed out of the pool and someone can easily slip and become injured. Barriers around the pool are extremely important. Make sure if you own a pool that not only is it secured, but that it has approved barriers around it. Many

children who drown in home pools were only out of their parents’ sight for less than five minutes. If you are not sure if you have appropriate barriers, a quick call to code enforcement or an internet search will get you all the answers you need. Lakes, canals and the ocean can also be a hazard. Remind your family members to always enjoy water sports by wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. Even the best swimmers can become tired and quickly fall victim. Swimming lessons are so important. Many programs can start lessons for babies as early as 6 months of age continuing through adulthood. There are many local organizations and programs that offer swimming lessons. The City of Miramar has 2 aquatic complexes that both offer swimming lessons. To find out more information, check out www.miramarfl.gov on the Parks and Recreation page. The Children’s Council of Broward County (CSC) provides coupons to offset the cost of swimming lessons for children 6 months to 4 years. For more information and to apply for a coupon, visit www.watersmartbroward.org. Lastly, but certainly not least, take a CPR class. This class will teach you how to respond to emergencies such as a drowning. Miramar Fire Rescue offers CPR classes on the last Monday of every month. For more information, visit www.miramarfd.org and click on the “Classes” link. Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. Caring for Your Mouth During Cancer Treatment BY DR. ISABEL SUATE cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and amidst all that is going on you can forget about your dental care, which could potentially harm your oral health. More than one-third of all cancer patients develop complications that affect the mouth, teeth, and salivary glands. These can be mild to severe and can make it difficult to eat, talk, chew, or swallow. Fortunately, with good care, you can reduce the risk of these side effects and manage them if they do occur, so make sure to include your dentist as part of your cancer care team. Patients who have good oral health prior to treatment have a lower risk of complications. Some Common Oral Side Effects with Some Cancer Treatments: ▸▸ Radiation therapy to head and neck: Dry mouth, decreased saliva and thickened saliva increasing risk for tooth decay, infection, loss of taste, mouth sores, stiffens of the jaw, bone disease. This may be temporary or continue for several years after treatment. ▸▸ Chemotherapy: Mouth sores, pain in the mouth and gums, peeling or burning of the tongue, infection due to temporary decrease of the immune system and changes in taste. This side effects tend to go away shortly after treatment. ▸▸ Bone-modifying Drugs: Bisphosphonates are used to reduce the spread of cancer to the bones. An uncommon but serious side effect is osteonecrosis of the jaw, resulting in exposed bone, pain and infection of the jaw. ▸▸ Medications: New and effective drugs are being developed all the time, some of them like mTOR inhibitors can cause canker sores. Also pain medications used to treat symptoms can cause dry mouth. Make a Plan of Action: ▸▸ Visit your dentist at least 4 weeks before starting cancer treatment to treat any decayed, broken of infected teeth, clean your teeth and treat any gum infections. For denture users, make sure they fit well and are not irritating the mouth. For patients that have braces, remove them to avoid irritation on the cheeks and tongue. ▸▸ Make sure to keep an excellent oral hygiene brushing at least twice daily and flossing. Use a soft toothbrush and talk to your dentist about prescription toothpastes or rinses that are milder on the tissues and have more protection for the teeth. ▸▸ Avoid alcohol and extreme flavors in your diet, avoid foods extremely hot or cold, spicy, acidic or crunchy that may irritate your mouth. ▸▸ Limit sugar intake as bacteria thrive on sugar and may increase your risk for tooth decay. ▸▸ If you experience vomits as a treatment side effect, do not brush your teeth right away, first rinse with baking soda diluted in water to neutralize the acids from the vomit, wait 30 minutes and brush. ▸▸ Talk to your doctor about any sores in your mouth, there are a variety of prescriptions rinses to help soothe the sore spots. ▸▸ Drink water and sugarless drinks to help manage dry mouth, suck on ice chips or stimulate saliva by chewing sugar free gum as well. Talk to your dentist about moisturizing oral gels and rinses. ▸▸ For radiation in head and neck your doctor and dentist may suggest some exercises to prevent jaw stiffness. Remember to keep good communication with your health care team to prevent oral side effects and manage your symptoms.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
The City of Miramar Continues to Take Off BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR ello Miramarians, First off, I want to thank those of you who took time out on Election Day last month to get out and exercise your right to vote. This is an important process that we should not take for granted because this is how your voice is heard and action taken. If you did not participate in this year’s elections, I encourage you to do so in 2021. Now that the elections are over, I want to share my vision for the future of our great City of Miramar: The work being done in “Historic Miramar” continues with efforts to solidify the infrastructure that will allow more homes and businesses to come into the area and further develop the East side. We are currently upgrading the East Water Treatment Plant System, improving stormwater drainage, reinforcing the canal embankments behind homes that were eroding, upgrading street lighting to more efficient LED fixtures, adding traffic signals to reduce accidents and have been breaking ground on a new police substation. This is all in addition to the continued beautification efforts that are on-going. Affordable housing in our City has been an unmet demand and we are working to remedy this situation. While it’s a good thing that our property values have gone up and more people are paying higher prices to come live in our city, it is also disturbing that there are others, while equally hard-working, who find the pricing for our homes unattainable. With this in mind, we are taking action to help alleviate this dilemma, like working with developers to include affordable units in their development and exploring programs for our first responders and educators. I look forward to sharing more at a later time.
H
The City of Miramar’s job opportunities are on the right track. Miramar has been recognized for having one of the fastest growing economies in the nation. More large-scale companies moving into our Park of Commerce and throughout the City. The goal for us, however, is to not only have the companies move in but to engage them with our community. We do this by offering STEM programs with our youth. We want our youth to not only know about these companies, but we want them to get the skills that will prepare them for careers in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math. I continue to be encouraged by the support we’ve received since creating the Mayor’s Aviation Expo two years ago. Our partnerships with Broward County Schools, Spirit Airlines, Fort Lauderdale International Airport, the Ansin Family Foundation, and so many others mean we were on the right track when we started this effort, ensuring we prepare our youth for what is coming. Yours in Service, Wayne M. Messam Mayor Make sure to follow me on Twitter & Instagram: @WAYNEMESSAM or FaceBook: / MayorWayneMessam. The Office of the Commission is located at 2300 Civic Center Place, Miramar 33025. To contact please call, 954-602-3198 or visit www.miramarfl.gov. 30 APRIL 2019 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
LEGALLY SPEAKING
Special Needs Trusts BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
I
f you are the parents of a child with special needs, such as a mental or physical disability, you face the challenge of providing for them while you are alive, as well as seeing that they are taken care of after you are gone. The expenses of caring for a family member with special needs can be overwhelming, and ongoing medical care may not be covered by private insurance plans. State and local governments offer assistance, but it is subject to strict financial eligibility requirements. So, what can a parent of a child with special needs do (or not do) to assure adequate care throughout their lifetime, yet not disqualify them from government assistance? First, it is important that parents, grandparents and others NOT establish custodial accounts for a minor child with special needs. Why? Because once the minor child reaches adulthood, distribution from the custodial account may disqualify them from government services. A well-meaning grandparent’s act of generosity can actually do more harm than good. The same disqualification applies if a child with special needs is left assets outright or through a trust. What about leaving money to a trusted relative to be held on behalf of a beneficiary? While that sounds like a reasonable plan, the relative could lose the inheritance through their own divorce, bankruptcy, lawsuits or simply by mismanaging the assets. In addition, should the selected relative die, the inheritance becomes part of the relative’s own estate. Fortunately, the government has established rules allowing assets to be held for the benefit of an individual with special needs, in a “special needs” or “supplemental needs” trust. A special needs trust preserves government benefit eligibility, while at the same time providing assets that can meet the additional needs of the person with a disability that goes beyond provisions for the basic needs and limited medical and long-term support and services of Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These life-enhancing expenditures can include: supplemental education and training; out-of-pocket medical and dental services; transportation (including purchase and maintenance of a vehicle); travel and vacations; hobbies and recreation; purchases such as computers, electronics, and furniture; personal care aide; athletic training and completion; and special dietary needs. Most importantly, a special needs trust must be designed specifically to supplement, not replace public benefits. Funds from a special needs trust cannot be distributed directly to the disabled beneficiary. Rather, funds must be disbursed to third parties who provide goods and services for the use and enjoyment by the beneficiary. Often, supplemental needs trusts are funded with life insurance proceeds, thereby providing resources exactly when they are needed. Special needs trusts are a critical component of your estate planning if you have a child or grandchild with disabilities. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS or nearly twenty years, the Miramar Police Department has had a well-staffed “Chaplains Program”, volunteers from our community representing various faiths. The program was established to provide aid and comfort to those in need and to provide a calm and thoughtful presence in times of stress, hardship, and grief. We have had Protestant, Jewish and Catholic chaplains. Although the chaplains are trained clergy or lay pastors of a recognized religious denomination, who are active in their local churches, they serve in a nondenominational role when representing the police department. They do not promote their religion to those they minister to. All our chaplain volunteers serve in three main roles: The primary purpose is to serve police officers and their families. Chaplains are there for support, for counsel, and to share in special life events. They offer complete confidentiality for families that need an extra ear to talk to and share life challenges and concerns. The Chaplaincy Program also represents the city and department at special functions, by offering prayers of invocations and/or benedictions or serving other roles in community events. Chaplains also serve our community, coming alongside police officers in special crisis situations such as death notifications, offering words of comfort during tragedies or to families facing challenging situations. The Miramar Police Department supports the Chaplaincy Program by providing the necessary training and materials to maintain its proficiency. All our chaplains must go through certification. They receive ongoing training with the department and with the International Conference of Police Chaplains. Due to the enormous responsibility and the sensitive confidential nature of the work, the selection process for membership and assignment to the “Chaplains Program” reflects the highest professional standards. Membership to the unit is limited to those professionals having a minimum of five years of experience as an active minister. Senior Chaplain Mark Hattabaugh, Chaplain Earl Richards, We have a total of Chaplain Don King, and Chaplain Gyrgleston Barnes four chaplains. Our Senior Chaplain, Mark Hattabaugh also serves with the Occupational Chaplains of America as the Commander for Law Enforcement and Fire Personnel setting up chaplaincy programs all across the United States of America and offering support to the command staffs working on opening new Chaplaincy programs. Chaplain Hattabaugh speaks Spanish and Portuguese fluently and serves as the Senior Pastor of the Pentecostal Church of Cooper City. Chaplain Gyrgleston Barnes is the Sr. Pastor of Faith Tabernacle in Ft. Lauderdale; Chaplain Donald King is the Senior Pastor of New Life in Miami; and Chaplain Earl Richards is with Miracles through Prayer and Faith Ministries in Pembroke Pines. The Miramar Police Department is privileged to have chaplains who volunteer their time and effort to serve this department, this community and even disasterstricken areas abroad. For further information on the Chaplains Program, please contact Office of the Chief at 954-602-4400.

Miramar Police Department and Fire-Rescue Plan to Knock Autism Out of the Park BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
pril is National Autism Awareness Month which promotes autism awareness, autism acceptance, and draws attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year. In honor of the dedicated month, Community Resource Officer (CRO) Joseph Drew from the Miramar Police Department along with Firefighter Gina Hudson from Miramar Fire-Rescue have organized the third annual “Battle of the Badges” charity softball competition. Drew started this event because his 4-year-old son Ayden was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at the early age of 1 ½. The officer and his wife immediately became involved with Autism Speaks, a national advocacy organization which sponsors research, conducts awareness and outreach for families, govern-
ments, and the public. The Drew family wanted to do their part and they began participating in fundraiser walks and such to create awareness. The devoted officer along with multiple members of both the police and fire department have children that are diagnosed on the spectrum. Not only does the event raise funds but it also helps to raise awareness for first responders and the need for ongoing training on how to handle emergency calls that involve children and adults with autism. “With the fire department and police department, we are coming in contact more and more with people on the spectrum. As a father with a child on the spectrum, something like this is extremely important to get everyone involved. I do this simply to raise awareness. Each year we have been able to make the event bigger and raise more money,” stated CRO Drew.
Last year Miramar’s prominent public departments raised approximately $2,500 to support Autism Speaks in the 2nd annual “Battle of the Badges” competition. Together the police and fire duo have raised close to $5,000 since its inception. This year they plan to hit autism out of the park again at the 3rd annual event on April 20th at the Silver Lakes Sports Complex. “The relationship between our fire department and the police department is strong. We do multiple events together throughout the year, but the ‘Battle of the Badges’ is unique in that we are able to raise money and further spread awareness of autism. We choose this particular cause because there are many of us who have someone on the spectrum that is near and dear to us,” explained Hudson. Approximately 150 people attended the 2018 fundraiser. Besides raising much-needed funds, everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the fun day while increasing awareness for autism. The 3rd Annual Battle of the Badges will be held on April 20th at the Silver Lakes Sports Complex, 17450 SW 23rd Street, Miramar, 33029 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. 11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Miramar Home for Sale BY KIM COX-WRIGHT
Miramar -
According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the home inspector flags these issues for you, you will
almost certainly experience costly delays in the lose of your home sale of, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what your're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.
