n Thursday, March 11, President Joe Biden signed into law “The American Rescue Plan Act.” After signing the legislation, he addressed the nation, highlighting that COVID-19 vaccines will soon be available to all adults. As a community news publication, we steer clear of politics, and we will do so regarding the legislation and the President’s policies. We see that day as a watershed moment; it was the beginning of the pandemic’s end. The COVID pandemic has affected us all in different ways. Many of us lost loved ones. Our families lived isolated from each other for over a year. Kids stayed home from school for up to three semesters. Small businesses, especially ones where people gather, have suffered. As our collective immunity becomes broader, it will be more critical than ever to support our local communities. The character of where we live is more threatened now than ever before. National brands and Internet retailers are efficient and predictable but make communities indistinguishable from one another. Let’s make a point to support locally-owned restaurants and venues. Go to a sporting event at a local high school or go for a walk in one of our fabulous parks. As we come out of our COVID hibernation, take stock of all the great things living in South Florida has to offer. It is a new beginning.

Hollywood Beach Sweep
On the second Saturday of every month from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. volunteers meet and collect litter and cigarette butts from the beach. I now have a chance for many more tomorrows’ and the ability to watch my children grow up. There are no words that can truly convey my gratitude for everybody at Memorial who made such an unforgettable impression in my life,” added Rose.

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) recently announced its top teacher, principal, assistant principal, and school-related employee at the 10th annual Caliber Awards Ceremony held at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. For the first time, this year’s ceremony was a unique outdoor celebration that adhered to strict COVID-19 guidelines and protocols. Nearly 1,000 guests attended the physically distanced event, and a live stream was available for online viewers. The annual event recognized and honored more than 500 outstanding school leaders for their dedication, talent, exceptional leadership, and hard work. These top leaders were acknowledged by their peers and school communities for the exemplary contributions they have made to the profession. This year’s 2021 Caliber Award for “Assistant Principal of the Year” went to Louis

Ankle Ligament Injuries

he ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited sideto-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear. Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more. Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle. When ligament injuries occur, it is most often associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear. It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant. Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments
and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports could take four to eight weeks. Chronic instability may develop if treatm e n t h a s n o t b e e n i n i t i a te d i m m e d i ately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. hese days many individuals going through a divorce try to handle the matter without the assistance of an attorney. They feel that it is better to try and settle the matter without spending large sums of money on legal representation. In all honesty, simple divorces can easily be handled by the parties. Simple divorces are cases in which there are no minor children and no real assets or liabilities to divide. There is a great deal of assistance through the courthouse or the internet to “walk you through” the process. HOWEVER, sometimes people can be as they say “penny-wise and pound foolish”. In an effort to save money on attorneys’ fees they may wind up giving up too much or perhaps not receiving his/her share. An individual who represents him/herself is held to the same standards as a licensed attorney. A judge will not give an individual the benefit of the doubt, just because an attorney is not sitting by his/her side in court. This can often present a problem in a more complicated case. I have often reviewed Marital Settlement Agreements which were entered into without the assistance of counsel. Often these individuals come to see me after the fact, to request assistance in attempting to “get them out” of the Agreement. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to undo what has already been done. A Marital Settlement Agreement or a Mediation Agreement has the same validity as any binding contract. In addition, as I previously stated, individuals are expected to know the law and it is not an excuse to later say “I wasn’t represented by an attorney”. I have often been told by individuals, who had initially attempted to represent themselves, that judges don’t seem to listen to them in court. Now, this could simply be a matter of perception or a true statement. It may also be because non-lawyers are not familiar with the rules of evidence and as such, certain testimony may not be permissible. A court proceeding is controlled by rules of evidence and rules of procedure, which are in many ways illogical and foreign to the average individual. Many attorneys offer free initial consultations and those that don’t usually charge a nominal fee for the initial meeting. If you have any doubts about the law as it pertains to your situation, it would be in your best interests to consult with an attorney. However, an attorney cannot ethically represent both parties in a divorce and therefore can only advise one of the parties. Therefore. initial consultations should take place without your spouse. Lastly, if you have considerable assets such as real estate or a business; or you anticipate a time-sharing issue, you should definitely consult with an attorney to discuss these matters. A little bit of experience can go a long way and ultimately save you money.

pring is in full swing! Now is a great time for spring cleaning. Following a few simple safety strategies can help you and your family stay safe during their spring-cleaning efforts. Unlike some popular clothing brands, cleaning chemicals are not “mix and match.” If your spring-cleaning efforts include household cleaning products, be sure to read labels to ensure all products are being used safely. Following a few safety tips can help prevent accidental exposure to potentially poisonous substances. Keeping household cleaning products in their original containers will ensure the chemicals and containers are compatible and easily identifiable. Chemicals can react differently to alternate containers. Storing cleaning products in containers not approved by the manufacturer could cause an unwanted reaction. Store cleaning products away from food items. Manufacturers want their products to be brightly packaged and often look similar to the grocery items. Those of you who saw the movie Nine to Five may recall the scene where the rodent poison was packaged similarly to the Skinny

If you venture to the beach, stay close to a lifeguard tower and be sure to follow directions given by lifeguards. While boating, make sure all occupants have a personal flotation device or life jacket available for use in the event of an emergency.
