Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM
A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States. The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).
The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.
Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.
Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.
Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly. According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants. “Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.
To find out if Watchman is the right treatment for you, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Cubeddu, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

“Studies have consistently shown an equivalent reduction in overall stroke rates after a Watchman procedure, and perhaps a long-term marginal survival benefit when compared to blood thinners,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “It’s an important new option for our patients.”

Miramar’s Botanical Garden a Hidden Treasure for All to Enjoy BY HELEN PENLAND
T
ucked neatly between City Hall and the Miramar Cultural Center is one of Miramar’s hidden treasures: the Miramar Botanical Garden. It’s unobtrusive and a bit veiled, but without a doubt, one of the most peaceful places the City has to give its residents. The garden has a quaint, unique, and yet modern look about it but without a doubt, it is inviting and feels like “home.” With a wide variety of plants and trees in a lovely-landscaped area overlooking a lake, the space offers a place for education, quiet reflection, and respite from a stressful day. Placards name the vegetation that is planted in the 8,600 square-foot area. Adjoining the specific garden area is the space behind the Commission Chambers making the entire square footage 13,800. The Botanical Garden was constructed in 2008 funded by the City of Miramar. The City also helped design it and throughout the years of 2008-2014 with the help of Home Depot 2014-2017. Prestige Landscaping has handled the work from 2017 to the present and cares for it on a daily basis. The City has overseen the garden since its beginning. Among the vegetation are multiple types of palm
trees, including Coconut Palms, a well-manicured variegated arboricola hedge, and an area of beautiful bromeliads. Beneath the trees and around the other plant life is a long, curved wooden bench for visitors to sit and relax. There is also a walking path through the garden with stepping stones surrounded by red cedar chips. One of the unique highlights of the garden is the large logo of the Miramar Cultural Center embedded in the grounds. The other remarkable attraction is the large “glass” cascading waterfall by the lake. It bears the engravings of egrets and when lit, provides an incredible view. Kesley Louis, who gave Our City Miramar a short tour, said, “Many people jog around the lake and stop to rest at the waterfall.” About every two years the area is entirely re-designed; almost everything is changed or updated except for stonework and permanent fixtures, such as the waterfall. Stephen Kantrowitz, Director of the Cultural Center said the area can be used for any event that’s
able to be held outdoors: wedding ceremonies, photo shoots, receptions, classes, luncheons, and other occasions. Often photos are taken under the latticework at one side of the garden. It also has electrical connectivity for lighting and music. So, when you need a little slice of serenity and beauty or a place for a special time, stop by the Miramar Botanical Garden, the hidden gem in the midst of the city complex. To inquire about using the garden and its amenities, contact the Miramar Cultural Center at events@miramarculturalcenter.org or call 954-602-4509.

Mayor’s Invitation to Free 3K Walk-Run-Yoga & Health Fair Draws Hundreds to Civic Center Place! BY HELEN PENLAND
O
n your mark; set; GO! Mayor Wayne Messam’s Free 3K Walk-Run-Yoga and Health Fair was a huge success! The event, held March 17th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. drew hundreds of participants at the Miramar Town Center. More than 600 participants attended the race and over 850 people came in total. Many joined the other festivities even though they didn’t take part in the walk-run event. The Mayor stated, “Our goal of being the fittest city in America is well on its way. Nearly 1,000 residents and visitors committed themselves to investing in their health. This event is interactive, fun and educational. Next year will be even better.” There was no room for boredom that day! Activities and athletic and dance demonstrations were ongoing throughout the day. Food vendors and trucks set up in front of City Hall, offering nutritional salads and other fare; other contributors provided healthrelated information, health-conscious food ideas, and recipes. Co-hosts Memorial Healthcare Systems and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital participated as well as Aetna Insurance, and Comprehensive Health Center. Volunteers administered free health screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol in addition to
osteoporosis risk assessments. Several other sponsors and other groups provided a wide variety of services, games, and entertainment for everyone. The Civil Air Patrol made a strong showing. Several sororities were represented including the Deltas, Links, and Pink Pearls. Chef Irie, a long-time friend and promoter of the Miramar Community Garden, provided Photos by Gregory Reed cooking demonstrations, sponsored by Comprehensive Health Center. Featured were a number of physical fitness and yoga demos highlighting a karate exhibition by Karate America, Body by Loleta Body Sculpting and Zumba, another belly dancing exhibit by Magda, and also an African belly dancing showpiece. To start things off, ICE Squad held a musical performance which has a member that is a professional trainer and led warm-ups for the attendees. The Miami Dolphins were well represented for the kids. They provided rock climbing, the Miami Dolphins obstacle course, and face painting. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital offered a bounce house, too. Even the Miramar High School Chess Team was involved! Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and participants for making this event such a hit. Next year promises to be even better!

Miramar High School Debate Team Goes National!
M
iramar High School’s Debate team (Debatriots) is on its way to the top! The team of 25 students, led by Debate Coach Renea Moss, Director of Speech and Debate Team, has won 46 awards in the last three months. They’ve moved from local and county competitions to state and now, they are going national. The team is diligent about practicing to achieve such awards, meeting twice every week after school. The group participates in three different leagues. They compete in the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA), Florida Forensics League (FFL), and South Florida Catholic Forensics League (SFCFL). Please note abbreviations may be used later in the article. Loli Formoso, Principal, noted, “We are extremely proud of our Debate program at Miramar High. Ms. Moss has done a fantastic job preparing our Debatriots for their various tournaments and trips. Our students are committed to developing arguments, critical thinking skills, and presentation skills…We are excited to see what the future holds for this amazing group of students!” Ms. Moss outlined just a few of their achievements. She received two coaching awards herself: FFL Coach State Champ in Program Oral Interpretation (POI) and FFL Coach State Champ Dramatic Interpretation (DI). Novices (new speech and debaters) won more than 27 medals in All Schools Tournaments (AST) within the last three months. Veteran debaters placed in the following: Daliss Hicks : FFL State Champion Program Oral Interpretation; Sunvitational Round Robin (Speech) – placed 2nd; Cal Invitational, (Berkeley, CA) 2nd Place in Program Oral Interpretation; 2nd Place District POI (Qualified for Nationals); SCFL (January) 1st Place Program Oral Interpretation Warren Forstmann: FFL State Champion in Dramatic Interpretation; Cal Invitational, (Berkeley, CA) 2nd Place Dramatic Interpretation; Sunvitational

They had five of their members break into semi-finals and finals. Daliss won Blue Key in POI. Warren was a semi-finalist in DI, Natalie was also a semi-finalist in OO, and Samuel was a semi-finalist in OI. They also went to San Francisco, CA to compete at Cal Invitational at Berkeley (awards above). Ms. Moss said, “Honestly, I love coaching the kids. If we look at the reality of the situation, our kids don’t have the same advantages as some of the other schools. Speech and Debate on this level are new to them…We have a motto that says, ‘Words have power, Master your power.’ My job is to give my kids power.” Congratulations to Coach Moss and the MHS Debate team! Well done and keep moving forward!

New Renaissance Middle School Teachers and Mathletes Host Educational & Entertaining Pi Night! BY HELEN PENLAND
A
s many know, March 14th is National Pi Day and New Renaissance Middle School celebrated the day/evening in proper fashion! The school hosted Pi Night, originally Pi Day, an idea hatched by 6th Grade Math teacher Ms. Ashleigh Jackson. In collaboration with the Math Department, the idea blossomed into a very successful and fun night. From 6-8 p.m. students, teachers, and guests participated in games and activities. The school’s math competition team, the “Mathletes,” organized the event under the guidance of Ms. Ermina Pierre and Ms. Marcia Chaney. Assistant Principal Heather Paschal Binns said they motivated students in a unique way. “We decided to create ‘Pi-a-Math Teacher’ and as continuous planning evolved, the circus theme was embraced and added to Pi Night.” The evening was held in the multipurpose room and the cafeteria. Turnout was better than expected, as well. Over 160 families, students, and visitors attended the event. Even Broward County
Commissioner Barbara Sharief, who visited but also sponsored the event, came to celebrate the world of Math. Ten Mathlete students and 10 Math teachers
participated in the event; they were also fortunate to have some hands-on teachers from other disciplines that came to help and support the event.
The evening was filled with several events such as Jeopardy where the students were able to collaborate with their parents about their knowledge of circles. They planned a Kahoot Game so the students could challenge their parents and learn more about the history of the Pi constant. Lastly, they showcased a hands-on station where students and their families could apply their math skills to measuring the area of cookies. Binns noted, “We had Mathnasium of Pembroke Pines who came in and helped us celebrate math with a vendor table. They also donated a one-month scholarship to their Mathnasium tutoring service.” Probably the most fun and playful events were the pie-eating contest and the PieA-Math Teacher event. Pies were donated from Miramar Commons Publix. “I had a lot of fun and enjoyed myself. You can do anything if you open your mind to it... I have never been in a pie eating contest before! The activities were very fun, simple, and challenging because I have been out of school so long.”- Kisseana Ross-Joseph. (Parent)

COMMUNITY NEWS
I Wanna Rock! – Rockfest Concerts Breathes Life into the Miramar Amphitheater with Multi-Year Concert Series BY TERRY JAILLET
R
ockfest Concerts, the renowned promoter of the Rockfest 80s Music Festivals, has signed an exclusive agreement to promote events at the Miramar Amphitheater. Led by music veteran Roy Anthony, Rockfest Concerts has been putting on shows throughout South Florida for over a decade. The group is best known for its retro 80s events featuring legendary rockers like Dokken, 38 Special and Joan Jett. The new concert series, however, isn’t just for head bangers. In fact, the first three events will
feature Latin music and Hip-Hop. “We are so excited to tap into the diversity of South Florida,” said Anthony, “We want to put on shows for all types of people and music.” All the events will be held at the Miramar Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park. The venue, which has 3,000 covered seats and room for 2,000 more on the lawn, is a perfect fit for the types of events Rockfest envisions. Concertgoers will get the benefits they’ve come to expect at major venues, like VIP sections and multiple food and beverage options, while also enjoying a much more intimate concert experience. The first two events planned are the Festival Cinco de Mayo on May 5th and the Godfather’s of Hip Hop on May 18th. Festival Cinco de Mayo The First concert in the series will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with music from all over Latin America. The headliner is Mexican Grammynominated artist Paquita La Del Barrio. Known for giving it to “Macho” men in the crowd while belting out regional favorites, Barrio is a true entertainer. Paquita will be joined by sexy Columbian salsa and tropical diva Carolina La O as well as special guest KerreKe.
The Godfathers of Hip-Hop The second event hosted by Rockfest will be The Godfathers of Hip Hop, featuring many of the names who put Hip-Hop on the map. Doug E. Fresh and Naughty by Nature top the line up of 80s and 90s superstars. The crowd is sure to get down to Doug E Fresh’s The Show or Naughty by Nature’s party anthems O.P.P and Hip-Hop Hooray. But, the real treat of the night will be the when Eric B. and Rakim unite for the first time in 20 years. The duo’s seminal track, Paid in Full, is considered by many music critics as one of the top hip-hop songs ever produced. To hear it live for the first time in two decades is sure to be a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. Rockfest is already promoting several more events at the Amphitheater this summer with many more in the works. Mark your calendar for the Latin Spring Festival on June 15th, Loudwire’s GenX Summer on July 3rd and the annual two-day Rockfest 80’s event scheduled for November 10th and 11th. Rockfest Concerts’ goal is to inject a diverse music scene into the region. It hopes to put on as many as 20 or 25 concerts a year. n To purchase tickets to upcoming events or learn more about Rockfest Concerts visit www.rockfestconcerts.com. Tickets to upcoming events are available at Ticketmaster.

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Miramar Home Up for Sale Kim Cox
Remember not so long ago, when
you could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then, to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a large profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the homeselling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most
homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-605-0724 and enter 1000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

Many would think that their local elected officials would be in position to take sensible and constitutionally legal action to put safeguards in place to protect the public to lessen the prospects of mass shootings like what happened in Parkland. Unfortunately, Florida Statutes not only preempt Miramar from passing local laws, but it punishes local officials by even drafting such laws personally. In response to this restriction, I sponsored legislation to have the City of Miramar join the Cities of Weston, Coral Gables, Pompano Beach, Miami Beach and five other cities in filing a lawsuit to challenge the penalty provisions of Section 790.33 of the Florida Statutes that prohibits
elected officials from passing local laws that regulate fire arms by removing them from office with no hearing and a civil fine of up to $5,000. This onerous and punitive law was pushed through the Florida Legislature in 2011 by the National Rifle Association to chill mayors and other elected officials from even talking about passing constitutionally allowed gun regulations at the local level. No other preemption in the state of Florida has this overreach. This lawsuit does not seek to take away or infringe upon the 2nd Amendment. It does however seek to allow cities to explore all constitutional options to keep our communities safe like control assault style weapons from being allowed in our parks and government buildings. After the tragedy in Parkland, I received many emails and calls from residents asking what we would do as a city do to prevent that very act from happening in our city. Today, unfortunately, there is little we can do due to the current preemption laws by the State of Florida. However, I cannot look into the eyes of our children and our residents and allow the status quo to not be challenged. That is why the City Commission has unanimously authorized this lawsuit to ensure your City Commission is empowered to respond to your demands for us to do something. #EnoughisEnough Yours in Service,

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Estate Planning – More Than Just Documents BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
E
state planning is not just about documents. The planning process requires a thoughtful discussion with an experienced attorney to identify areas of concern and vulnerability, followed by the design and implementation of a plan with appropriate documents to address these areas. The plan can be very simple or more complex, depending on one’s particular situation. When beginning the planning process with an attorney, there are many things to consider. It’s not just about the stuff. It’s common to assume an estate plan is about leaving an inheritance to your loved ones. Often, the focus quickly shifts from “how much” to “when” and “how.” Perhaps you have a child with a tendency to overspend. You may also fear leaving a generous inheritance to your children might discourage them from working. Have you even considered that your spouse may someday remarry, and your assets eventually pass to the new spouse’s family? A full discussion of your estate plan should address all of your concerns. It’s not just about after you are gone. What about the possibility of you or your spouse becoming disabled? Who will oversee your property or handle your business affairs? How is disability determined and by whom? The answers to these questions should be part of your plan. If you become disabled without any estate planning, the court will step in to appoint a guardian to manage your financial affairs and see to your personal and medical care.

954.885.0085 What about doctors, insurance and government resources? Who is authorized to provide treating physicians with care instructions for an ailing loved one? Who has access to one’s health information? Who is authorized to interact with insurance companies, Social Security, Medicare and other government agencies? A comprehensive estate plan should provide for all of this. What if I do nothing? Should you die without a plan, your assets will go to your closest relatives under the state of Florida’s intestate succession laws, as determined by the probate court. The only factors involved in the distribution of assets are whether or not you have a spouse, children, living parents or other close relatives when you die. All distributions are predetermined and there is no opportunity to protect your spouse, children or other relatives from creditors, predators or their own bad habits. Moreover, if you leave minor children, their guardian will have access to your assets. Estate planning is an interactive and collective process which commences once a client meets with their trusted legal counselor. It should not simply be a “check the box” or “fill out the form” exercise. The value of estate planning is the advice and guidance received, not the documents delivered. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Gait Disturbances in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
G
ait disturbances are one of the most common concerns of parents. Children may begin walking with their feet turned in or out, leaving parents with many questions. The problem may be coming from any level between the foot and hip. Some deformities occur at one level (i.e. foot, leg, knee, or hip), while others are more complex. Some children may “grow out of it”, while others will not. Newborns and infants are born with their legs bowed and the lower leg turned in relative to the upper leg (medial tibial torsion). This represents the fetal position of the lower limbs. With the beginning of walking the lower limbs start to straighten as normal physiologic development takes place.
Causes of Gait Disturbances:
▸▸ Genetic: Rotational problems often run in families. When parents and siblings have grown out of it, the presenting child usually will as well. ▸▸ In utero position during pregnancy may cause the foot to turn in. ▸▸ Sleeping or sitting postures may not cause the problem, but will delay the resolution. ▸▸ Compensating mechanisms for limb deformities. ▸▸ Tight muscles and ligaments at any level. ▸▸ Bone deformities in the hip, femur, knee, tibia, or feet.
Examination of the Child will include:

▸▸ Observation of the child at rest, standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Checking hip range of motion with the hip flexed and extended. ▸▸ Checking knee structure and the rotation of the tibia on the femur (lower leg bone relative to upper bone). ▸▸ Checking the position of the ankle and the leg bone to determine bone deformities. ▸▸ Observation of foot posture to check for curvatures and elevation or flattening of the arch. ▸▸ Neurological problems must be ruled out.
Treatment Plan:
▸▸ To effectively treat rotational problems, the level and severity of the deformity must be determined. ▸▸ If sleeping and sitting position perpetuate the deformity, they must be changed. ▸▸ There may be a need for casting the foot, ankle and leg (every two weeks) to put tight ligaments and muscles into a continuous stretch. This may be necessary for anywhere from two to eight weeks. ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve muscle flexibility and to provide gait training to the child. ▸▸ In shoe custom molded orthotics or gait plates to help encourage normal walking. This is especially beneficial in the flatfooted child or ones who are intoed. ▸▸ Night braces or splinting to encourage and maintain correction. ▸▸ In rare cases, surgery may be necessary if the problems persist and walking becomes difficult or if the child continues to fall or trip. In most cases, continued observation of the child may be all that is necessary.

EYE CARE
What is Color Blindness? BY MICHAEL CHESEN, OD
C
olor blindness is a disorder affecting the capability to see colors under typical light or to discern colors as they are normally seen. Generally, the condition is present at birth, but it can also result from old age or a number of diseases of the eye. The discernment of color depends on cones located in the eye. People are usually born with three kinds of pigmented cones, each of which perceives various wavelengths of color. When it comes to pigment, the size of the wave is directly linked to the perceived color tone. Short waves produce blue tones, middle-sized waves are perceived as green tones and longer waves are seen as reds. Which type of cone is affected impacts the spectrum and severity of the color blindness. Because it is a gender-linked recessive trait, green-red color deficiency is more frequent in men than in females. Still, there are a small number of females who do experience some degree of color blindness, particularly yellowblue deficiencies.
Happy Mother’s Day
Color vision deficiencies are not a debilitating condition, but it can impair educational progress and work performance. Not having the ability to distinguish colors as friends do can quickly and negatively impact a student’s confidence. For working people, color blindness could become a disadvantage when competing against peers trying to advance in a similar industry. There are several examinations for color blindness. The most common is the Ishihara color test, named after its inventor. For this test a patient views a plate with a circle of dots in various sizes and colors. Within the circle appears a digit in a particular tint. The patient’s ability to see the number inside the dots of contrasting colors indicates the level of red-green color sight. Even though inherited color vision deficiencies can’t be treated, there are some steps that might improve the situation. Some evidence shows that wearing tinted contacts or anti-glare glasses can help people to see the distinction between colors. More and more, computer applications are becoming available for regular personal computers and even for smaller machines that can assist users to distinguish color better depending upon their specific diagnosis. There are also exciting experiments being conducted in gene therapy to correct the ability to distinguish colors. How much color vision problems limit a person is dependent upon the type and severity of the condition. Some individuals can adapt to their condition by familiarizing themselves with alternate cues for colored objects or signs. For example, many individuals are capable of learning the shapes of traffic signs (rather than recognizing red) or contrasting items with paradigms like a blue body of water or green trees. If you notice signs that you or a child might be color blind, we recommend that you see an optometrist. The sooner you are aware of a problem, the sooner you can help.
