COMMUNITY NEWS
Run Mayor Run! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
ayor Wayne Messam is a very visible community figure in Miramar. So visible in fact, one can usually see him running throughout the city. However, this time he’s taken running to a whole other level. Most recently, the athletic public servant announced that he will be running for President of the United States in the upcoming 2020 election. Mayor Messam views the lack of urgency to plan for the future and take action on the crises coming as the biggest threat facing our nation. Gun violence, climate change, healthcare costs and student loan debt are hot topics the former FSU wide receiver wants to tackle. The gun violence epidemic is taking far too many lives, climate change is damaging more homes and devastating more communities each year, skyrocketing healthcare costs are cutting off many Americans from the possibility of their American Dream, and crippling student loan debt is leaving people of all ages with little hope for the future. During an interview on CBS News when asked why a mayor of a city with a population of 140,000 thinks he is qualified to run for office, Messam
replied, “I’ve been blessed to achieve and live the American dream. My parents immigrated to this country from Jamaica and when you compare mayors to Washington insiders, Americans see that mayors actually get the job done.” Today, Miramar ranks as one of the fastest-growing city economies in the country. Mayors are uniquely positioned to deal with national challenges because they are closest to the people. Since being involved in the City’s local politics for almost a decade, the devoted mayor has dealt with many. His accomplishments thus far include: ▸▸ Championing a living wage for workers. ▸▸ Bringing jobs back from China. ▸▸ Attracting high-paying jobs. ▸▸ Proposing and passing relief on water bills for federal workers who were impacted by
the shutdown. ▸▸ Fighting oil drilling in the Everglades. ▸▸ Declaring Miramar a safe place for immigrants. ▸▸ Suing the state to keep the city safe from gun violence. “Mayors solve big challenges every day. I have always been an ambassador for our great city, and I look forward to continuing to talk about the successes of Miramar across the country,” exclaimed Messam. “The big issues facing our country need fresh eyes and bold ideas from someone closer to the people on a daily basis, so our voices can be heard.” To learn more, visit www.wayneforamerica.com, email info@ wayneforamerica.com, or call 877-WAYNE20.

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough
surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat the following conditions: chronic join pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedure; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. COMMUNITY NEWS
Home Grown – Florida Master Gardeners Visit Miramar Community Garden BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he University of Florida /Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (UF/IFAS) grants the Florida Master Gardener title to those individuals who complete a Master Gardener training course and the required volunteer hours. The overall purpose of the unique program is to train volunteers who will educate the public on how to solve their landscape, water, plant nutrition, and pest problems. Participants can expect to learn an abundance of topics including environmental horticulture, botany, ecology, pollination biology, soil science, landscape ecology, integrated pest management, organic, community, vegetable, and gardening, and so much more. For the past century, the volunteer-driven program has put land-grant university research and education to work to preserve the balance of natural resources and quality of life for all Floridians.
However, the program relies on dedicated volunteers with an interest in gardening and giving back to their communities. So, it was only natural that the UF/IFAS student volunteers included a visit to the Miramar Community Garden (MCG) on their tour. “I visited the Miramar Community Garden last December and was so moved to see that this is a place where the community learns, shares and practices how to grow their own food and live a healthy life. We currently have active Broward County Master Gardeners teaching other members and the community at large the possibilities of growing healthy, delicious food at low cost,” explained Lorna Bravo, UF/ IFAS Extension Broward County Director. “Our 2019 Master Gardener Volunteer class is introducing a new class module titled ‘Sustainable Urban Agriculture’ and the UF/IFAS Extension is collaborating with assistant professor Dr. Qiu Jiangxiao from Landscape Ecology at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center to bring the resources and knowledge of the University of Florida faculty and staff directly to you locally through our
Extension programs.” Since May 2010, the MCG has offered an average of twenty events per year organized by membervolunteers who have donated over 24,000 hours of service to the Broward community. Due to increasing urbanization and land conversations in Florida, there has been an ever-growing interest in prompting urban agriculture for addressing social-environmental issues. “I feel very excited to be collaborating with Dr. Qiu Jiangxiao and Miramar Community Garden on this wonderful program that connects members of our community and serves as an educational resource for the community to learn about the sources of fresh produce and healthy living, participate in community service, and hands-on health-based learning. Environmental sustainability starts in our own backyards, and UF/IFAS Extension Broward County sees great potential in this project,” added Bravo. The Miramar Community Garden is located at 3700 Largo Drive, Fairway Park, Miramar. To learn more about the UF/IFAS program, please visit http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/broward/urban-horticultureand-natural-resources/broward-master-gardener/ or email lbravo1@ufl.edu.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Miramar Home for Sale BY KIM COX-WRIGHT
Miramar -
According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the home inspector flags these issues for you, you will
almost certainly experience costly delays in the lose of your home sale of, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what your're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.
To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Repot, visit: www.buyersellermatches.com/ inspection or To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll free 1-855-603-3984 and enter 3001. INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
Designing Woman – Miramar Student Selected to Launch Startup BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust last August, Miramar resident Melissa Dufour launched her company before completing the Startup NOW entrepreneurship program at Broward College. The rigorous 7-month course introduces its students to key concepts in entrepreneurship, marketing, and finance to bring their innovative idea to life. The unique entrepreneurship training program also helps determine productmarket fit before moving on to creating a business plan and developing a pitch with their students. The local college pays for approximately $25,000 worth of best practices, education and mentoring, plus twelve college credits and the “Technical Certificate in Entrepreneurship” from Broward College. All that is required from its students is a commitment that they pay for their own business and meet specific deliverables. One of the highlights of the program is the opportunity to participate in a “Shark Tank”- style competition which could earn ambitious students funds
to launch their business. Four Broward College student entrepreneurs were selected to showcase their ideas to founding donors of the J.D. Armstrong (JDA) Student Venture Fund, investors from Broward County, including New World Angels, Miami Angels, 500
Startups, and more. The JDA fund is the first of its kind in South Florida and provides earlystage seed capital to student entrepreneurs who would otherwise find it difficult to launch their businesses. Dufour was one of the chosen to go in front of the esteemed panel of judges to present “Sexy Sweats”. The high-quality “athleisure wear” fitness apparel line is designed to fit women of all shapes and sizes to enhance the natural curves of anybody wearing them. Its vibrant colors, daring designs, and versatility can be worn inside or outside of the gym. “Having an athletic background in school and a passion for fashion and fitness, I was finding myself in athletic wear sixty percent of the time. So, I came up with the idea of starting my own line,” explained the aspiring 32-year-old designer. “I started sketching out my ideas and after doing a lot of research, I realized ‘athleisure’ was a huge trend in the market and my idea had great potential.” After hearing about the JDA fund
multiple times in class, Dufour knew she had to step out of her comfort zone and pitch her idea to various audiences. Her tenacity won her the much-needed funding which she will use to build a stronger marketing strategy and to increase production while making Sexy Sweats a scalable business. “This has been a rewarding experience, and it’s all been worth it! Besides being successful, my dream and goal are to be a leader and motivator to my peers and show them that anything that you put your mind to is possible,” added Dufour.

DENTAL HEALTH
Get Your Perfect Wedding Day Smile BY DR. ISABEL SUATE s summer approaches, we also welcome the historically traditional and popular June weddings. Amongst all things a bride has to think about and plan, remember one more thing…your smile! Not only is it one of your best accessories, but it will be recorded on pictures and videos forever, so you want to make sure it looks radiant. Don’t leave your dental treatment for the last minute, start planning as far ahead as possible. The bigger the change you want, it’s likely more time will be needed. There are different options for improving your smile before walking down the aisle. Customized Whitening - An effective teeth whitening should be on the top of the list, as it is an easy way to treat any discolorations due to age, drinking dark colored beverages, smoking or other reasons. It enhances your appearance giving a more confident smile and it actually changes the focus on the face, lessening the look of any surrounding wrinkles. A professional whitening is more predictable that an over-the-counter kit. Many dentists have chairside whitening treatments, customized whitening trays or a combination of both. Allow for one or two office appointments and keep in mind you might need a few weeks to get the results you want. Dental Cleaning - Make sure to have a check-up and a cleaning to remove plaque, hard build-up, and stains, it will also freshen breath and keep gums healthy. If it has been a long time since your last cleaning you may need more than one, so schedule well ahead of your wedding date. Orthodontics- Clear aligners are easy and convenient to correct a bad bite or to slightly move teeth for better function and appearance. But, depending on your case, it may take a few months or a couple of years. Cosmetic Bonding - With a toothcolored composite material, the shape of teeth can be improved to cover gaps, lengthen, replace old discolored fillings, fix small chips and improve one’s smile. Usually they can be done in one visit and look very natural. Plan at least a couple of months ahead of the wedding date. Porcelain Veneers -Highly aesthetic restorations are bonded to the teeth to improve the shape and color. Usually a small amount of tooth enamel must be removed to make room for the veneers. They take at least three visits, so consider doing them about three months in advance of your date. Dental implants – An excellent option to replace missing teeth with a very natural look. However, they take time in planning and healing, so think about six months to a year before the big day. Talk to your dentist to make a customized plan to fit your timeline and your budget.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Seasons of Change BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR reetings Miramarians, It’s always wonderful approaching a change of season, though living in South Florida, there is a question of just how much change happens from month to month. However, in May we begin to feel summer approaching with hotter temperatures and we also begin to prepare for the school year to come to an end. Finding meaningful summer activities for our children is not only a challenge but is very important. Having three kids of my own all now in college, I remember searching for educational and challenging recreational and educational activities to keep them occupied during the summer. When our children were younger, Angela and I found very few options for our son and twin daughters that challenged them academically. We wanted STEM programs and activities that sparked their interest while preparing them for career choices. Last summer I started a program that does just that and I am offering it again! The Mayor Wayne Messam Summer Technology Boot Camp offers high schoolers an introduction to the skills and career opportunities of technology. While this event takes place in June, youth from Miramar can sign up and be considered for the program now. The student must be a current 10th - 12th-grade student or a recent high school graduate from a Miramar High School. To register and be considered, log on to www.fvi. edu/summerbootcamp To ensure the best chance to be selected, you must register by May 24th. In addition to my Technology and Cyber Security Bootcamp, the City of Miramar offers numerous other camp opportunities for our youth. Opportunities include swimming, arts, STEM activities, cooking classes, and sports, there’s something available for everyone. To get more information about our summer camps, please go to https:// miramarfl.gov/551/Summer-Camps May is Haitian Heritage Month and this year, I’ve partnered with the HaitianAmerican Chamber of Commerce to present Ayiti Celebrates - a cultural concert with Joel & Mushy Widmaier (known from their days with the group Zèklè) and guest artist Beatrice Kebreau. The concert takes place on Sunday, May 5th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center, 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar 33025. I will be giving away 10 tickets to this concert to City of Miramar residents who have read this column. The first 5 people who would like to attend this concert can contact my office at 954 602-3198 and you will be given two complimentary tickets. Enjoy! Another one of my Initiatives returns with the kick-off of Conversations with Mayor Messam. On Wednesday, May 15th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., I will be at Cool Runnings Cafe, 9977 Miramar Parkway, Miramar 33025 to answer any questions you have about our great city. I’ve been doing these gatherings for years and it’s an opportunity to talk to me, one-on-one, about your city. Hope to see you there! Yours in Service, Wayne M. Messam Mayor

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Funding Your Trust BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
W
hy is funding a trust so important? Once you create a revocable living trust there is one last step that should not be overlooked: funding your trust. Trust funding is the process of retitling assets to name your trust as the new owner or, in some cases, naming the trust as the primary or contingent beneficiary of your assets. Unfortunately, many people fail to follow through with funding . With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property and business interests should be funded to your trust. If your trust is not properly funded, your loved ones may still have to go through a probate proceeding after your death before your assets reach your trust and its beneficiaries. We own real property in more than one state. Can we put all our property into one revocable living trust? Yes, and this is one of the advantages of a revocable living trust. Without a funded trust, not only will the property you own in the state where you live be subject to probate, but the real property you own in another state will require an ancillary probate in accordance with that state’s laws. By funding both properties into your single living trust, you eliminate the need for both probate proceedings.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualiications and experience. 34 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
How can I obtain help with funding my living trust? Your first resource is the attorney who drafts your estate planning documents. If necessary, your attorney can create a deed for any real estate placed into your trust, and assist in transferring non-real estate assets. Your CPA, CFP, or financial advisor can also help with completing forms to name your trust as a new owner or beneficiary. Considering the importance of funding your trust, it is wise to seek professional advice. Our trust is long and contains very personal information. Do we really have to provide a copy to a financial institution, just to fund it? A financial institution needs to know certain vital information about your trust, such as who are the trustees and the successor trustees, and what the trustee’s powers are. Your attorney should prepare for you a Certification of Trust which provides this information without disclosing the personal information in the trust. By Florida statute, any company doing business in the state must accept the Certification of Trust in lieu of the entire trust. Do we have to file a different income tax return for our trust? Assuming your trust is revocable, that is, you maintain control over it and can make changes to it until your death or legal incapacity, you will not have to file a trust income tax return while you are living. You can continue to file your single, joint or separate personal tax returns using your Social Security number as usual. Upon your death, a separate trust tax return and new tax id may be required for what will now be your irrevocable trust. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Stroke Awareness Month BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER
M
ay is Stroke awareness month and that is why, we here at Miramar Fire Rescue, would like to share with you some facts on stroke. Educating yourself about stroke can save your life or someone that you love. Stroke can happen to anyone at any time. There are many factors that come into play when it comes to stroke. Some are controllable whiles others are not. Controllable risk factors can be changed or controlled. High blood pressure and high cholesterol, for example, and can be managed with diet and exercise. If exercise doesn’t work, there are medications that can maintain levels within a normal range. Atrial fibrillation, which is an abnormal heart rhythm along with diabetes are also controllable risk factors with the right medications. Smoking is the easiest factor to control. DON’T START and if you smoke, well here is your reason to quit. Smoking doubles the chances of having a stroke. There are plenty of aids out there to assist you to quit. Speak to your doctor for more details. Some uncontrollable factors are things like age, race, and gender. One out of five people who have a stroke is under 55 years of age and the chances of having a stroke increase with age. African- Americans, Hispanics, and Asian/ Pacific Islanders also have a high risk of stroke than people of other races. More women have strokes than men do, and more women die from stroke each year than from breast cancer. Lastly, family history is an uncontrollable factor. If someone in your family has had a stroke, everyone in the family is at a higher risk. Stroke is also known as a brain attack, like a heart attack. A stroke happens when blood vessels in the brain become blocked or burst from the pressure. When oxygen-rich blood cannot be delivered to that area of the brain, the tissue begins
to die, causing damage. Depending on where the damage is and how big of the area affected will determine if a person’s speech, vision and or movement will be impaired. Some damage is reversible, but it is important to act immediately if a stroke is suspected. Symptoms that you should be aware of that could lead you to suspect a possible stroke: Confusion- the person will be unable to understand what is going on. Dizziness- the person could feel faint or light-headed. Loss of Balance- the person could have a loss of coordination. Numbness- a tingling sensation on the face or body. Trouble Speaking- the person could struggle with speaking or have slurred speech. A Severe Headache- pain like no other headache. Trouble Walking- the person stumbles or is unable to walk straight. Weakness- the person may lose the ability to use their limbs or facial muscles. Usually, this will affect one side of the body. Here at Miramar Rescue, we tell our patients that “Time is Tissue”. The longer you delay, the more damage that is caused. If you suspect a stroke, immediately dial 911. Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. For more information please call (954) 602-4802. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1. Also, check us out at Miramarfd.org and follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

RECIPE OF SUCCESS The Miramar Community Garden’s collaboration with Baptist Health has been a recipe of success. The garden series have had great turnouts at their events. From a “Battle of the Beans Cook-Off” and a “Raw Food Extravaganza” to a “Total Pampering Meditation and Aromatherapy”, attendees were encouraged to not only eat healthy, but live healthy.
HOW DOES THE GARDEN GROW
Volunteers of all ages came out to support “Workday at the Garden”. Besides digging, planting, and weeding, they each made friends with similar pastimes while helping the Miramar Community .
TOUCHDOWN The Miami Dolphins have promoted Frank Losito to Senior Director of Stadium Operations. Losito, a native of Miramar, FL, has been with the organization for 17 years and works directly under Dolphins Senior Vice President of Operations Todd Boyan. FIELD TRIP Unilatina International College (UIC) students in the Holistic Human Development class visited Miramar’s favorite garden to learn about the hydroponics system and so much more.

EMAIL PHOTOS TO: editormiramar@ourcitymedia.com Annie left the warm South Florida sunshine and traveled all the way to the South Coast of Iceland. Just beside a small fishing village she discovered Iceland’s world-famous black sand beach. Reynisfjara was voted one of the top 10 non-tropical beaches by National Geographic. With its enormous basalt stacks, miles of black sand, and Atlantic Ocean backdrop, Our City Miramar gives it their vote too!
