MIRAMAR POLICE Vehicle Burglary/Theft Prevention Tips

Most vehicle burglaries can be prevented. Unlocked cars are the most common vehicles targeted by criminals. They are always looking for a way to take advantage of unsuspecting victims. Often thieves target a neighborhood, pulling on car door handles looking for an opportunity to make you a victim.

We recommend you:

▸Lock your vehicle doors. ▸ Take extra precaution at daycares and schools. These locations are often targeted because victims leave purses and other valuables behind. It only takes seconds for a thief to break your window and get away with your belongings. ▸ When at a gas station remember to lock your doors, even when fueling up. Brazen thieves will open car doors to steal your purse or valuables while you’re distracted at the pump. ▸ Don’t leave key fobs in your car. Whether it’s your own or to another vehicle parked at your home. Don’t make it easy for a thief to drive-away with your car. ▸ Avoid leaving valuable property in your vehicle. This includes guns. These stolen guns often end up in the hands of juveniles or sold to others who would not be able to legally buy them after a background check.

▸Park overnight in a locked garage or in a well-lit enclosed area, if possible. If you’re parking in a driveway, consider installing motion sensor lights. ▸ Follow a bedtime routine that includes making sure your home and car are all locked before going to bed.

Catalytic converter theft is also on the rise. It is recommended that if you are unable to park your car in a garage or secure area, consider investing in an anti-theft device that can make the removal of converters more time-consuming or an alarm system that can be an effective deterrent.
