There’s Much to Celebrate on July 4th
W
e celebrate the United States’ independence from England each year on July 4th. In 1776, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the 13 colonies were no longer subject to British rule. While U.S. independence is clearly the most significant historical event on July 4th, interestingly, several other important events have taken place on this particular day. On July 4th, 1827, the State of New York abolished slavery. At one time, New York had the second largest slave population among the colonies. This legal act eventually led to the abolishment of slavery throughout the country and, in part, the Civil War. On July 4th, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. The landing and subsequent scientific mission were watched by people around the world, including by a young South African named Elon Musk and a Seattle book seller named Jeff Bezos. Those two would eventually go on to found SpaceX and Blue Origin, the world’s first privately funded space exploration companies, among other notable businesses. On July 4th, 1939, New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig shocked the world by announcing his retirement from baseball and the fact that he was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite his horrible diagnosis, he captured the hearts of America by claiming that he was the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” On July 4th, 1918, the Bolsheviks killed Russia’s Tsar and his family. In 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a log cabin at Walden pond. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson announced the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the first step on America’s path to becoming a global Super-Power. And in 1976, Israeli commandos executed the most daring raid in military history, rescuing over 100 hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. Coincidentally, the United States is not the only nation to celebrate its independence on July 4th;so does the Philippines. This year, as you enjoy a traditional 4th of July barbecue followed by a patriotic fireworks show, think of all the other historical events that this day marks. Happy Birthday, America!

t was the perfect way to kick-off the summer with a “Send-Off Celebration” for The Reggae Girlz. Vice Mayor of Miramar, Alexandra P. Davis hosted the Jamaica National Women’s Team with a series of fundraising events and activities to support their qualification to the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup France 2019. The celebration began with a Multi-Cultural Sports Summit at the Miramar Cultural Center. Attendees were welcomed by the Miramar High School Patriot Band. The Summit provided a networking luncheon, discussion, and Q&A session with top athletes and leaders in the sports industry. Keynote speakers included Jamaica’s Consul General Oliver Mair, Michelle Adamolekum, President of the Reggae Girlz Foundation, and Allie McNab, Adviser to the Jamaican Minister of Sports. Other events included a “Send-Off Celebration Fun-Day” at the Ansin Sports Complex with exhibition matches between the Reggae Girlz and FC Surge USA. A celebrity match between Jamaica and Haiti included Chris Martin, Agent Sasco, Bibi Gardener, Papa San, Supa Twitch, Dutty Dex, and Richie D, among others. The historical feat under the direction of Coach Hue Menzies made the Reggae Girlz the first
Caribbean team to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The young athletes progressed through the Caribbean zone qualifying to reach the CONCACAF women’s championship where they secured a momentous third place finish with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Panama giving them a spot at France 2019. Star Player Jody Brown was named best young player of the tournament. “We were so excited and honored to have hosted the Jamaica Reggae Girlz Send-off Celebration with events throughout the City of Miramar,” said Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis. “Jamaica made history by being the first Caribbean country to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup. With the Miramar community having such deep roots in Jamaica and the Caribbean overall, it was a natural connection to host the Reggae Girlz. We were honored to be a part of such a great experience.”

Police Explorers Get the 411 on the 911 BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of the largest Scouting organizations and one of the largest youth organizations in the United States of America. They have many programs to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations. Police Exploring is a learning-for-life organization of the BSA and is offered through the Miramar Police Department. The purpose of this popular group, which is open to young men and women ages 14 to 20, is to build character while providing citizen training and fitness to the youth of America. Besides these great life tools, Police Exploring educates and involves youth in police operations. Regardless of their career choice, the Explorers learn how law enforcement functions in the community and become aware of the complexities of police service. Police Explorers are in direct contact with members of the Miramar Police Department. They
are involved in weekly training sessions which familiarize them with all aspects of law enforcement; including patrol procedures, traffic stops, arrest
procedures, traffic and criminal law, criminal investigations, traffic crash investigations and firearms safety. Additionally, during these meetings, they review scenarios that resemble actual calls that police officers handle. Training is also done so that they can compete in local and state Explorer competitions. In 2018, the Miramar Explorers placed second at States Competition, and are consistently in first place in
Broward Competitions. The explorers also volunteer in several areas throughout the city ranging from city events to summer youth programs. The City of Miramar and other local community organizations call upon the Police Explorers to assist with traffic direction and parking control at events. Police Explorers are not used in assignments requiring police authority but are used to assist the community and police department under the direction and supervision of police department employees. “The Explorer program has been an integral part of our organization for more than 40 years. Past explorers have been hired by the department and have gone on to become chief of police or other high-ranking members of our agency,” said Chief Dexter Williams. “It’s more than just an instructional program. Our explorers are part of the Miramar Police family.”
Summer Special! 20% off on Sunglasses
There is no cost to join the program since it’s funded by the Miramar Police Department, The Miramar Police Benevolent Association (PBA) and other local sources. For more information, visit www.miramarpd.org/police-explorers.

Hot Stuff – Everglades High School Fire Academy Graduates BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or six years Everglades High School students have had the opportunity to participate in a class like no other. Students interested in learning about fire-rescue can join the three-year program which is only available at Everglades and Coral Springs High Schools in Broward County. The City of Miramar Fire-Rescue formed the unique partnership with the high school which is taught by firefighter paramedics. Recently, they were proud to celebrate their third graduating class.
“This program gives students firsthand experience with the fire service. With this experience, the students have early exposure and it gives them a feel for what working for fire rescue is all about. I was given a similar opportunity in high school and I truly believe because of it, I was able to complete my education and pursue the career much quicker,” explained Gina
Hudson Firefighter Paramedic Miramar Fire-Rescue. The curriculum includes both firefighting and fire aid. It covers rules, regulations and laws which firefighters must follow, fire ground operations, skill requirements, along with first responder for emergencies. These standards are set by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and training which all firefighters in the state must complete, both professional and volunteer. During the three-year period, the class meets the 206-hour requirements to obtain a state of Florida Firefighter I certification. The program itself includes classroom time, physical training, practical objectives, trips to the fire station for hands-on training, and concludes with a written exam along with performance objectives, and the anticipated live fire burn evolution at Broward Fire Academy. So far, approximately forty-three students have graduated from the program and each year the number continues to increase. Students who attend the fire academy satisfy an elective credit. Graduates wear a medal at graduation and if they pass the live burn, they also wear a blue cord to signify industry certification. Once the students have completed the

Everglades High Football Team Scores Big Off Their Field BY BEVERLY PERKINS

t wasn’t a typical school day for the Everglades High School football team. The Miami Dolphins hosted the ambitious bunch at their Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice in May. Although, it certainly was not football season, these Gators had the opportunity to huddle with the pros in the offseason and tackle some questions about the country’s favorite sport as part of the Junior Dolphins program. The Junior Dolphins program encourages youth players and coaches to teach, learn, and play football in a fun and safe environment. The educational program is designed to give kids access to learn the fundamentals of football using the NFL’s top resources. Additionally, to grow the game, it works to educate coaches, parents and youth on the health and safety of football with a strong emphasis on character development. Of course, in the process they are building the next generation of Dolphins Fans. The team was given a tour of the Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University and heard from Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Ambassador and Dolphins alum Twan Russell about the dedication and commitment needed to achieve their goals.
“Some of these kids never would’ve had this experience if we weren’t invited. It was awesome to see the Dolphins practice, see their structure, their work ethic and how they move around tered on the positive character-building aspects of the field,” said Everglades High School Head Football playing the game. Coach Rodney Rumph. “Hopefully, that’ll motivate “It was great to have the opportunity to come these kids in the future to work like that seeing what out here. It showed us new ways to practice and to they have to get to.” be more disciplined,” said Everglades High School As part of the Miami Dolphins’ commitment to sophomore running back Kelly Loiseau. “The explothe development of high school and youth football, siveness of the running backs and the work ethic they the team will host high school teams from Miamihad also stood out to me.” Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties at the team’s These activities connect to the Miami Dolphins offseason practices. The team visits are a targeted “Teamwork at Work” initiative to level the playing field effort to recognize, inspire and increase football through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, participation through personal connections cenmore educated and united South Florida community.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Happy Birthday America! Be Happy but Be Safe! BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER ndependence Day is quickly approaching and watching the 4th of July fireworks is a family tradition in South Florida and across the country. Families gather around to enjoy and celebrate our nation’s history. While fireworks are a holidays staple, we would like to remind you that they can also be very dangerous. It’s a time to celebrate but also a time to stay safe, especially when lighting sparklers or setting off roman
I
candles at home. Every year it is estimated that 9,000 adults and children suffer burns, eye accidents and other injuries related to fireworks. According to the National Fire Protection Association sparklers alone account for 25% of fireworks injuries seen in emergency rooms. In addition, many young children and family pets, are very sensitive to the sound of exploding fireworks. We recommend bringing earplugs for young children and also to consider leaving your pet at home to avoid any stress on your beloved pet. While at home think about leaving your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid as much noise as possible. Most firework-related injuries occur when setting off these devices at home or in the neighborhood. The best way to prevent these types of injuries is to go to a public show, instead of buying your own personal fireworks. But if they are part of your family tradition, make sure to purchase only legal fireworks and
store them in a cool, dry place. Most importantly, be sure to read the warning labels, follow basic safety rules and that children and teens stay under adult supervision. If an accident occurs seek medical attention immediately. Keeping safe from injuries, and pet safety are not the only things to keep in mind this Fourth of July. The National Fire Protection Association states that an average of 50,000 fires per year are caused by fireworks. If you or a family member will be using personal fireworks pick an outdoor area away from trees, shrubbery or anything that might catch on fire. Here are more firework safety suggestions: ▸▸ Never allow young children to handle fireworks. ▸▸ Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks. ▸▸ Have a bucket of water handy for extinguishing “used” fireworks. ▸▸ Back up to a safe distance as soon as you light the fuse. ▸▸ Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device when lighting. ▸▸ Never carry fireworks in pockets. ▸▸ Never ignite fireworks in metal or glass containers. ▸▸ Alcoholic beverages should be saved for after you put on the show. ▸▸ Light one firework at a time. ▸▸ Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks. ▸▸ Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. To contribute to our environment in a positive way, consider picking up all the debris and soak the remnants with water before putting them in the trash. Remember that injuries to you or your loved ones are preventable. It is always recommended that anyone who wants to enjoy the fireworks, attend a public show set up by experts. Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. For more information please call (954) 602-4802. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Keeping Your Children Safe on Social Media BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS he Miramar Police Department recommends you speak with your kids about using social media responsibly. While there are benefits to growing up with this technology, there are risks as well. Children today are more social media savvy than ever.
T
Discuss Expectations, Usage and Social Media Boundaries with Your Kids: ▸▸ Have open lines of communication with your kids about social media. Explain to them how social media is used for good and bad and how they must be aware of their behavior and the behavior of others while online. ▸▸ Discuss cyberbullying - the posting or sharing of negative, harmful, or false, content about someone else. Some cyberbullying can cross the line into criminal behavior. Posting threats of violence is not a “joke.” Those posting threats will be investigated thoroughly and may be subject to arrest. ▸▸ Advise your children not to engage in this and to report any bullying immediately to you. ▸▸ Speak to them about what a digital footprint is and how inappropriate messages or images could impact them in the future.
▸▸ Check for inappropriate and/or illegal content, such as hateful or threatening speech and nudity. ▸▸ Speak with your kids about posting their location on social media sites or even posting pictures while on vacation. You don’t want a predator knowing where they are, nor do you want a burglar knowing you are out of town.
▸▸ You should have access to ALL of your children’s accounts. ▸▸ Remember mobile devices, like cell phones and tablets, let children access social media sites away from adult supervision.
Know Their Account(s): ▸▸ Know which social media platforms your children use. They may have several Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Most social networks require users to be 13 years old or older. However, users can easily misrepresent their age. 28 JULY 2019 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
Know your Kid’s Privacy/Account Settings: ▸▸ You may want to create the accounts with/ for your kids to ensure they are set-up correctly. Private information, such as the school they attend, should not be listed on their profile. ▸▸ Review app settings to help them keep information, like their current location, private. ▸▸ Ensure that their page is not open to the public. Know what your child is posting: ▸▸ Check comments and images for personal information, such as phone numbers and addresses posted by your child.
Who are your children communicating with? Your children’s online contact lists and followers may include people you don’t know, or even people your child only knows online. ▸▸ Randomly check your children’s friend list or followers. ▸▸ Adults send friend/follow requests to children every day. They also pose as children. Speak with your kids about not communicating online with individuals they don’t actually know. ▸▸ Check your children’s direct messaging (private conversations message board). Where to report? If anyone talks to your child about sex, shares or asks them to share sexual images, or if your child is a victim of sexual exploitation, contact your local police department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at www.CyberTipline.com or 1-800-THE-LOST. The Miramar Police Department is located at 11765 City Hall Promenade, Miramar, 33025. For general information, please call 954-602-4000. To report a non-emergency, call 954764-4357. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Some Thoughts on Legacy BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
L
egacy means so much more than the assets we leave behind in the form of an inheritance. Most of us never give much thought to what our legacy might be. We think about a will or trust that carefully lays out how our property is distributed after we are gone. It’s usually about our “stuff.” Interestingly, studies on adults and their inheritances may surprise and disappoint you. The Journal of Family and Economic Issues reported that adults who receive an inheritance save only half of what they receive. Other studies point to statistics showing virtually all money or property left to love ones in the form of an inheritance is spent within nine months. So thinking in terms of money and property, a legacy has a very short shelf life. With that in mind, let’s explore other ways to leave a legacy that will live on long after you are gone. Charitable Giving Making charity a part of your estate plan does two important things. Most obviously it provides support to a cause or causes you deem important. But it is also a teaching moment for your loved ones; it reinforces the importance of providing for the greater good. Many of us have made quiet personal promises to support a charity or cause “later,” or “when we can better afford it.” Making room in your final wishes for charitable giving answers those promises. Aside from the tax advantage charitable bequests generate, this selfless act can echo for generations. Many people leave a percentage of their estate to charity instead of a specific dollar amount. By leaving a percentage, your family and charity will receive proportionate shares regardless of how large or small your estate is. Instead of leaving money to a charity in a will, you may also consider naming a charity as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan.
Ethical will An ethical will has ancient origins, originally appearing in the Book of Genesis when a dying Jacob spoke with his sons to share wisdom and his hopes for how they should live their lives. Originally, ethical wills were communicated orally, but were later written as letters. Today, ethical wills are known as “legacy letters.” It is a way to communicate to loved ones your hopes and dreams, regrets, and lessons learned. Often apologies are offered and forgiveness is sought. Family lore, favorite jobs, funny stories may all be part of your letter. A well-circulated legacy letter was written by President Obama to his daughters on the eve of his first inauguration. Think of a legacy letter as a way to pass along wisdom and love to a future generation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Thankful for Freedom! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR n a daily basis, we have so much to be thankful for, from our families and friends and daily responsibilities to the pleasures we enjoy and hopefully not take for granted. In our wonderful City of Miramar, it is no different. We can buy or rent the homes we choose. If we need help, there are people we can call to get the support needed. If we’re hungry, there are places to go to buy the ingredients needed to make the meal ourselves or sit in a restaurant and partake with friends or neighbors we’ve yet to meet. We can freely visit our parks, worship where we wish or not. Every person is protected by public safety. We can receive medical aid if ill. Our children go to amazing schools to learn and to play. We can watch television, listen to music, dress how we please, read books about whatever subject captures our imagination. We also have the liberty to write a book and have it published and even make money by selling it.

Your Pet Could Be Our
As adults, we can experience as many careers as possible in our very prosperous city economy. As businesspeople, we can aim for as many locations as we desire. We log on to our computers and share information with whom we please, at any time. We are limited only by ourselves, as long as we obey the laws. We hold elections and abide by the results. If we have a complaint, we can call or send a letter to make our thoughts known. This is the City of Miramar, in The United States of America. We are grateful for our independence, where people of all nationalities have come to make their dreams a reality. Be sure to celebrate our Nation’s Birthday in the City of Miramar. Gather family and friends for a fun-filled evening at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. The park opens at 4:00 pm. Enjoy music by our City’s popular DJ, indulge in the variety of food truck offerings, buy from novelty vendors, and young ones can play in a kids’ zone before a spectacular firework show. For more information, please call 954-602-3319. Thank you to all who have, and continue to make, these freedoms possible. Happy Fourth of July. We are #OneAmerica, #WeAreMiramar
