S
ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. Summer break, however, does not last forever. Most local kids return to school on August 14th this year. They will bring with them stories of adventure, excitement and maybe even a little bit of boredom. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There are a myriad of activities and opportunities for families to choose from. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today; rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools or online learning. So many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide our readers with a useful guide to help get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started.

Summer Heat Takes on a Whole New Meaning! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
o escape the summer heat, many kids spent their time hanging out in swimming pools and at the beach this summer. But this group of high school teens turned up the season’s hot temps in another way. For three days of their school break, Everglades and Miramar High Schools, Somerset Academy, and some homeschooled students attended Camp Ignition. Miramar FireRescue hosted their first-ever camp to teach local youth what being a firefighter/paramedic is all about. During the 3-day camp, the students were able to perform many of the tasks that firefighters and paramedics encounter daily. “This camp was about introducing high school students to a career of service and, hopefully igniting their interest in becoming a firefighter/ paramedic in the future to come,” explained Firefighter Paramedic Yely Hernandez. To understand what a “Day in the Life” of a
firefighter is like, the first day began with a tour of Miramar Fire Station 84. From learning about the many tools needed, to trying on bunker gear quickly, the eager students had the opportunity to see that it’s no easy task to put on such heavy gear and be ready for an emergency. It takes much dedication and training to be responsible for others’ lives.
On the second day, the objective was to get students involved in manual duties. The first was climbing up a 100-foot aerial ladder from the Quint truck to simulate rescuing a victim from a tall building. Those who were apprehensive were proud of accomplishing such a task. Later that day, they were introduced to forced entry using the same door firefighters use for training. Finally, search and rescue concluded the exciting lessons where they learned that firefighters
do not always have full visibility when searching for a victim in a fire. During the final day of Camp Ignition, the goal was to give students skills that they could take home and be able to use when needed. This included learning how to properly use a fire extinguisher, performing hands-only CPR, and administering first aid care to a wounded bystander. The EMS competitive team came out to simulate a scenario where they treated multiple patients at the same time to demonstrate how firefighters must stay calm and focus in order to help patients in a stressful situation. However, the most thrilling event was hose advancement, which showed how to open the bail and flow water from the fire hose. “I feel that Camp Ignition was a great opportunity to demonstrate to all participants a firefighter’s duties and responsibilities. My son really enjoyed Camp Ignition and shared his excitement with all his friends,” exclaimed parent George Roque.

Miramar Girl Scout is One Smart Cookie BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
ften, when one thinks of Girl Scouts, they think about the iconic annual cookie sale. Although synonymous with cookies, these girls offer much more than delicious confections. The vision of the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSF) is to provide girls a place to explore and achieve their fullest potential making them our leaders of tomorrow. In early May, the organization held their annual Gold Award Ceremony honoring the 2019 class of Gold Award Girl Scouts. Among the eighteen Girl Scouts presented with their Gold Award this year was Miramar resident Kelly Norman, an individually registered member of Girl Scouts. The level of commitment to complete a Gold Award project is so great that less than 6% of all Girl
Scouts in the world earn it. Kelly’s Gold Award project titled Tower of Knowledge was inspired by the fact that students with special needs require special care, but most people don’t know what that care involves. The ambitious scout recognized the struggle to enhance special needs students’ cognitive and problem-solving skills and she wanted to empower the children to do something amazing with their lives and to inspire them to make a difference. “So many people have a bias towards the autism community, and I used my project to help change that bias for the better. I worked with many people and taught them that autism isn’t something that should be looked down on. These students are brilliant individuals. I gave them a way to channel their energy into something beneficial for both them and the community,” stated Norman. The project focused on learning more about the autism spectrum and what she could do to help further these students’ education. She worked with the Angel’s Reach Foundation and Silver Lakes Elementary School in Miramar to provide a safe and engaging learning atmosphere for all. By creating an extra-large outdoor Jenga and Connect Four, she combined education and entertainment for the students. These classic games stimulated both their
physical needs and cognitive skills by focusing all of their energy into a learning experience. “The most successful aspect of my project and the part that impacted me the most was the genuine happiness and interest in learning the children radiated around the project. Within minutes, a spark ignited in the children that were not there before,” added Norman. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in grades 9 – 12 can earn. It is accomplished by completing a service project with a minimum of 80 logged hours. The project must fulfill a need in the community, create change, and be sustainable with long-term possibilities. Gold Award Projects demand the highest level of organizational, leadership, and project management skills.

KAPOW! Much Gratitude for Miramar’s Kids and the Power of Work Volunteers BY BEVERLY PERKINS
K
APOW! The fun word often seen in cartoon format meaning a “cry out” of satisfaction, awesomeness, or accomplishment is wellsuited for the organization bearing its’ same acronym. Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) certainly has accomplished a lot in its 28 years! The awesome group of individuals and community partnerships under the direction of Learning for Success/KAPOW President John Casbarro, has grown immensely and successfully in the past couple of decades. Incorporated in 2002, Learning for Success (LFS) manages a network of more than 1,000 business and community volunteers, teachers, and school administrators who collectively implement the KAPOW program. From 1993-2019, Casbarro expanded the
program to reach more than 6,000 students from 80 elementary, middle and high schools annually. To date, LFS has brought the program into 120 schools and has engaged more than 142,000 students in South Florida. KAPOW in South Florida is part of a national network of partnerships developed by the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). “The KAPOW program brings volunteers into schools and students into the workplace to help them connect their school experiences with its application in the workplace and life,” explained Casbarro. “We are proud and honored to partner with the City of Miramar for seventeen years now to bring this program into its schools.” To appreciate and show their gratitude to their supporters, the annual KAPOW Recognition Dinner and Awards event was held at the Miramar Cultural Center which was once again hosted and co-sponsored by the City. Special Assistant City Manager Shaun Gayle welcomed more than 300 volunteers, and business partners, as well as teachers and administrators from KAPOW partner schools on behalf of the City. So many volunteers and City officials were honored at the anticipated ceremony. Thanks to their support,
347 students from both Miramar High and Fairway Elementary participated in the KAPOW program this past school year. This fall, the City will sponsor two additional schools, Everglades High, and Glades Middle. Miramar High’s KAPOW partnership was developed by Italia Thurston from the Miramar Police Department (MPD) to support the City Manager’s Criminal Justice program at the school. This was the first time KAPOW lessons and volunteers have been utilized for this purpose. Funding support was also provided through the City Manager’s office and MPD’s Law Enforcement Trust Fund through Police Chief Dexter Williams. “Helping students to learn and develop job skills is an important thing for our City’s volunteers to do,” exclaimed Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam. “It exposes our youth to jobs in the City of Miramar and KAPOW provides the vehicle for us to accomplish this goal.”

Individualized Teaching is Compassionate Teaching at Small World Montessori School

hey say love conquers all. They say love is patient and compassionate. As a Montessorian, I have known an unequivocal fact: Everyone learns differently. Some of us need written or visual content, while others absorb information through hands-on practice. For parents and educators, few things are more important than understanding each of our children’s learning styles. Traditional learning methods often focus on one or two styles only (verbal and logical). More open-minded philosophies like the Montessori method allow for a child to experiment and discover how they individually gain knowledge whether it be verbally, by practice, sightand-touch, or a combination of several styles. A growing array of early intervention models aimed toward addressing diverse learning needs and developmental challenges prior to Special Education Identification are gaining prominence in educational policy and practice. Such models are grounded in principles central to Montessori pedagogy, including mixed-age grouping, differentiation, and ongoing child study. In addition to honoring Montessori’s legacy of personalized, inclusive edu-

t the closure of the 2018-2019 school year, the Broward Education Foundation (BEF) awarded more than 1.5 million in college scholarships to Broward County students. More than 300 public high school students were recipients of the generous scholarships, ranging from $500 to four-year tuitions, during BEF’s 2019 Scholarship Award Ceremony. “Each year, this event highlights the determination of our students to reach for their dreams,” said Broward Education Foundation Executive Director Shea Ciriago. “We also see firsthand the unwavering commitment to education by our donors and Broward Education Foundation’s impact on student achievement. We applaud the hard work, motivation and dedication of these scholarship recipients.” Of the many well-deserving seniors, twenty-nine resided in Miramar and ten attended Miramar High School including Vanessa Rolle. The dedicated student was an excellent candidate for the CFB-Gertrude Gray Memorial Scholarship. She demonstrated academic achievement, showed personal leadership qualities in

extracurricular school and community activities, and additionally wrote a stellar essay to earn the sought-after award. Although Rolle thought she would receive a few hundred dollars towards her higher education, she was beyond surprised to learn she won six-thousand dollars. The eager graduate will attend Winston-Salem State University and major in Justice Studies. Her dream is to work alongside civil rights attorneys and leaders to advocate for
civil rights. “I have always been passionate about the justice system. I have faith in the system, despite its many inconsistencies. In the United States we are allowed to address our concerns, my main concern is when the system has failed someone. When justice is not served there is an issue. Everyone has the natural right to be treated equally and when this is not done, I am the passionate person who will step up to the plate and have my voice heard,” explained Rolle. “With these scholarships, we provide Broward County Public School graduating seniors who have the desire to continue their educational journey with the opportunity to fulfill that dream,” Ciriago added. “Broward Education Foundation will continue to be adept, agile and responsive to shifting needs in education and our community.” “I was consumed with so much joy when I won the scholarship, I’ve applied for so many and this was my first ever scholarship that I’ve won. I am beyond grateful that Miramar High School opened up so many doors for me that I never would have even imagined. I am so excited for the coming fall,” added Rolle.

Osteoarthritis of the Foot and Ankle BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
O
steoarthritis is a wearing out of the cartilage at the end of the bones that form a joint. The cartilage gives us smooth gliding joints and allows the joint to function without pain. When the cartilage wears down, bones start to rub against each other causing pain. Swelling and bone spurs develop around the joint as well. It is usually caused by injuries to the joint from trauma or from repetitive stress. Abnormal bone and joint position may also be present that may be hereditary in nature or acquired over time. Stiffness in the joint (foot or ankle) is almost always present. When getting up from sitting or when getting out of bed, there may be difficulty weightbearing. As one walks it may improve. Over time the stiffness lasts longer, and the joint starts to ache. There will be a chronic low-grade swelling to the joint that is affected and difficulty with certain exercises or shoe gear will also be present. There will be tenderness around the joint and
When conservative care fails, arthroscopic procedures may be necessary to remove any of the damaged tissue in the joint. Open procedures may also be needed if the joint is not accessible to arthroscopy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary on the joint itself to reposition the bones in the joint giving them better position, allowing more normal mobility. If arthritis is severe, joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary and will have a huge positive impact on one’s life, allowing the patient freedom of mobility to perform activities of daily living and also sports. Prognosis is good to excellent in almost all cases. pain with moving the joint. Difficulty running or being generally active because of the pain will also be present. Treatment is aimed at identifying the joint involved and reducing the inflammation. Oral or injectible medication will help to reduce some of the inflammation and proper shoe gear or orthotics may help to lessen the inflammation around the area. Physical therapy may be necessary to improve range of motion and stability.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Back to School Safety Tips! BY MIRAMAR FIRE-RESCUE CHIEF ROBERT E. PALMER an you believe it’s that time of year again?! The kids are headed back to school. Where has the summer gone? We here at Miramar Fire Rescue would like to share a few safety tips to remind everyone how to stay staff throughout the year. After 10 weeks off for the summer, we all become lax to the idea of school zones, but it is essential that we remember why we have school zones to begin with. School zones are for everyone’s safety. The reduced speeds are to lower the instances of children and adult alike from being injured, sometimes fatally. We often see increased numbers of children being hit by cars during the beginning of every school year. The combination of the excitement of the students to get back to class and see friends and teachers and the ease of drivers having 10 weeks with no school zones can be a deadly combination. Often children will bolt out between cars not paying attention to their surroundings when crossing the road. This also goes for children getting off buses as well. They often walk out into traffic without looking first. The reduced speeds in school zones give drivers more opportunity to slow down or come to a complete stop with minimal notice. It is important that pedestrians and drivers always pay attention to their surroundings. In more recent years, cellphones have increased these incidents staggeringly. We need to educate our children to be situationally aware of everything going on around them. Other things to remember when walking is to use sidewalks whenever possible along with crosswalks when available. The crossing guards at schools are there to help reduce accidents and to minimize traffic hold-ups. Some students ride bikes to school. It is important to always wear a properly fit-

ting helmet. Also, when bike lanes are not available, bicycle riders should always ride in the same direction as traffic. Never use electronics while riding. Always pay attention to the traffic and listen to what is going on around you. For the older students who may finally get to drive to school, it’s a new-found freedom. But with this new freedom comes added responsibility. Not only are their lives in their hands, but other lives as well. Teens are the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of a fatal crash. Once again cellphones are the culprit. There is a new law that states anyone seen texting while driving will be ticketed. That text message or scrolling through social media can wait! There are multiple apps available that can help you and your child put down that phone while driving. Also, always remember to buckle up. It is true, seat belts do save lives! MESSAGE FROM THE MIRAMAR POLICE DEPARTMENT
Child Sexual Abuse Awareness
I
t’s one of the most difficult topics to discuss, yet a necessary one. Unfortunately, child sexual abuse is happening in communities across the nation including our own. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center defines child sexual abuse as when a child (ages 0 – 17) is exposed to sexual acts or behavior. It is important to note that in most incidences, the abuser is not a stranger to the child. Approximately 90% of children who are victims of sexual violence know their abuser, within this 30% are family. Additionally, 60% of child victims are abused by a person the family trusts. This devastating crime has long term effects on the children that are victimized, which can range from psychological, behavioral, and physical damage. Psychological impact may include depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other trauma-related concerns. Behavioral impact can include suicidal ideation, promiscuity, and other inappropriate sexual behavior, running away, being targeted for sex trafficking, drugs/alcohol use, aggressive/violent behavior, poor performance in school, truancy, defiant behavior, criminal behavior, and other maladaptive behavior. Physical impact may include STDs, HIV/AIDS, child pregnancy, inhibit-
ing the child to have children as an adult, and other health-related issues. In addition, sexual abuse is often associated with violent behavior that physically hurts children such as broken bones, strangulation, etc. One incident of sexual abuse on a child has a long-lasting damaging impact on their life. No child should ever suffer at the hands of an abuser. There are steps parents/guardians can take to help protect their children. These include open communication with your child regarding sexuality, sexual abuse, their bodies, and boundaries. Use correct terminology for body parts so that everyone is on the same page. Discuss “good touch” and “bad touch,” which includes appropriate touch where, why, and by whom. Develop a plan with your child on what they would do if someone ever approached them or touched them inappropriately, and also what they would do if they knew a friend was being sexually abused. Be prepared to have this conversation without judgment so that your child can free to talk with you. Being aware of who your child interacts with is just as important as having open communication with them. If your child is in school, camp, or other organized activities, discuss what steps that group has in place to prevent child sexual abuse. Also, keep in mind that the internet and gaming communities are
areas where children are lured to meet abusers. It is important to use parental controls, know which sites your child is on and whom they are communicating with, and to be present when they are engaging in such activities. Empowering you and your family with knowledge on child sexual abuse goes a long way in prevention! LEGALLY SPEAKING
How to Select an Estate Planning Attorney BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE inding an estate planning attorney can be overwhelming. Here are some pointers to help you make the right choice. Qualifications. It is fair to question an attorney as to how they developed their estate planning expertise. Often attorneys who are transitioning from other practice areas may present themselves as an estate planning attorney although they have little actual training or experience. Ask how many trusts have they drafted. Do they hold any advanced degrees? To which professional associations do they belong? Keep in mind that it is impossible to be an expert in all areas of the law. Attorney’s Fees Price is always an important factor. However, making your selection solely on price may not be wise. In setting fees, a reputable attorney will consider the amount of time that they will need to invest and the complexity of the plan. Once they know what needs to be done, they can quote a fee. Customized Documents A high-quality estate plan should be custom drafted to fit your individual and family needs. Be suspicious of firms who quote flat fees over the phone for anything more than a simple will, or who advertise low prices for trusts. This often means the attorney does not draft custom documents but rather uses the same boilerplate document for each client and simply fills in the blanks. That is not planning, it’s word processing. The Process During your planning meeting your attorney should spend several hours with you and your spouse gathering detailed information about you and your loved ones, including your hopes and fears. Whether you are single, divorced, widowed, married , or have a blended family, the planning process should also include a lot of interactive questions intended to help formulate your unique plan . Additional Services Be sure to ascertain exactly which services your attorney provides and whether there are additional costs for: trust funding (changing title and/or ownership to your trust), answering questions and telephone conversations with you or your financial advisors, reviewing and explaining your estate plan with your successor trustees and with your family in the event of your disability or death, future modifications to your estate plan, and recording and filing fees. Success A successful estate plan establishes clear instructions for your successors and trustees as to what they should do to achieve your objectives . Your attorney should work with your team of professionals ( financial planners, accountants, life insurance advisors), to advise and assist you and your successors. Be sure to look for an estate planning attorney with whom you and your spouse feel comfortable and at ease. Planning is not a transaction, it is a lifelong exercise. Chemistry is important, as is competence and shared values. Do your research. Ask questions. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
“MOCCA”
Miramar Always Cares BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR reetings Miramarians, I hope the summer months are moving along as you hoped for, and all is well. As is the norm, I wanted to share some information with you, keeping you updated with what is taking place in your beloved Miramar. A program recently begun by the City Manager’s office is taking shape. The Comprehensive Assessment of Revenues and Expenditures program, C.A.R.E., empowers our employees, residents, and businesses to participate in the progress of the City by making recommendations that can be implemented during a 5-year strategic planning process. Ten Point C.A.R.E. Committees The program is a 10-point City Manager budget initiative launched to maximize the City’s human, capital, and natural resources. Each committee has a Chair and at least one Co-Chair to implement strategies to support the City’s vision of the great City of Miramar. C.A.R.E. establishes sound financial management and responsible cost-effective utilization for use of public funds. Implementation of the C.A.R.E. Program involves support of each committee within the ten-point plan to address citywide focus areas. Summary We started the process eight months ago by working on suggestions. This allowed our employees to get a feel for the system before we fully implemented the other key elements like key performance indicators and citizen customer service surveys. We have generated over 600 suggestions in our initial 8-month period. Our committees reviewed and researched many suggestions and presented 31 combined suggestions to the City Manager for approval. The recommended suggestions will bring about a potential combination of cost savings, revenue generation and quality of life improvements for citizens and employees. In addition to the opportunities to increase our revenues, the process has empowered our employees and we are delighted that this is an additional benefit. Upcoming Happenings A reminder, coming up in August are celebrations for Jamaica’s Independence and Flag Day. As part of my initiatives, I’ve combined the two celebrations into one and called it “Emancipendence Day”. Come Experience a Likkle Bit O’ Jamaica with us on Thursday, August 1st from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center. Then on Saturday, August 3rd, I’ll be hosting the City’s Jamaican Independence Celebration at Shirley Branca Park from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The majority of our students will be going back to school on Wednesday, August 14th. I wish all of our students a safe, positive, wonderful and successful school year with continued blessings. Yours in Service,
G

HOT HAPPENINGS
The Miramar Fire-Rescue Department always has much going on around town. From rescuing kittens, helping pets in distress, and winning an international competition in the Czech Republic, this crew sure knows how to handle it all! But they also know how to cool things down by hanging out at a city picnic and enjoying some Milo’s Iced Tea which was brought over to them with gratitude for all they do.

Nuvia Sutton and Erwin van der Bunt escaped the Florida heat and headed out to the Northwest for a visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in Wyoming. The Monarch Lakes couple laced up their hiking boots and relished in all that nature had to offer. From watching Old Faithful erupt and wild animals play to taking in all the spectacular views and dining at historic establishments, the adventurous duo truly appreciated the magnificent treasures that our National Parks behold. But they still took the time to take a photo with Our City Miramar, a little treasure of their own.
