It’s Election Time

T

he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States. There are many important issues at all levels of government today. We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same. The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative. The general election is November 6th. Mark your calendar and remember to make your voice heard and vote! Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet President & Publishers

Reboot & Recharge - Mayor Messam’s Summer Bootcamp Sparked Minds BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

iramar Mayor Wayne Messam always wants to provide the youth in the community with opportunities to increase their knowledge and their education. This past summer the devoted mayor partnered with leading tech educator TechLaunch@ FVI to teach computer code to registered students at Miramar-area high schools. The free two-week program was held at TechLaunch@FVI’s state-of-the-art Miramar campus. The bootcamp’s goal was to assist students in becoming tech literate and to allow them to see the possibilities in pursuing careers in coding or gaming. “All these students need to start on the path to tech

Arnie Girnun, who heads TechLaunch@FVI, left, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam, middle, and Denyse Antunes, President of FVI, work with high school students learning computer code over the summer.

is to spark their mind to the possibilities that tech and coding offer in our economy,” says TechLaunch@FVI head Arnie Girnun. Mayor Messam promoted the training and experienced faculty led the intriguing course to the sixteen students with labs and lectures based on real world scenarios. Florida Vocational Institute, the parent of TechLaunch@FVI, and sister school, New Horizons Computer Learning Center, were the bootcamp’s sponsors. Schonne Lee Naungayan, 16, took the training course and would take it again because she wants to pursue a career in coding. “The class was fantastic,” exclaimed the ambitious student. “This is connecting me to what I want to do which is video game design.” Justin Gadson, 16, and his twin brother, Jayden, casually wired a USB cable on their last day, organizing the rainbow colors of wires into a connector that would soon feed data to and from a network. Justin wants to become a tech expert, so he can create networks to connect computers to each other. For teacher Leanne Robin, the class was a great success

because the students now have a clear idea of how much fun tech can be and how financially rewarding it is. TechLaunch@FVI has a long track record of running highly successful bootcamps for youth and adults. Arnie Girnun, who is also Co-Chair of TechHire.Miami, said the 28 technology bootcamps in Miami comprised the largest program of its kind in the country. This is important because South Florida as a whole needs to grow its tech workforce to fill the thousands of industry jobs coming available over the next few years. Both the Miramar and Miami programs serve as a primer to more learning and certifications, which in time can lead to some tech jobs that pay more than $70,000.

Miramar, Miramar, How Does Your Garden Grow? BY BEVERLY PERKINS

J

ust before summer at the 2018 National Planning Conference in New Orleans, the American Planning Association recognized the City of Miramar’s Community and Economic Development Department for its work in the creation and maintenance of the Miramar Intergenerational Fruit & Vegetable Garden. The 7400-square foot garden, located in Historic Miramar, is maintained by volunteers and serves as an educational resource for the community to learn about the sources of fresh produce and healthy living, participate in community service, and hands-on health-based learning. The City of Miramar won the nationwide recognition in the “Sustainable Park, Recreation or Open Space Project” category, one of eight winners from across the country representing extraordinary achievements in Sustainable Planning. “The Garden’s community-building formula is about inviting any and all to do something together, to share a quality moment and feel good about it,” 14 MONTH 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

said Elsi Rose, Development and Capital Engagement Coordinator. Since the garden’s inception in 2010, it has gained valuable partners who want to contribute to the City’s commitment to health and wellness education. Partners include Slow Good Glades to Coast, HandsOn Broward, Baptist Health South Florida, and Feeding South Florida. “Baptist Health South Florida loves partnering with the Miramar Community Garden because of the likeminded mission to promote health and wellness in our communities. Educating the community on healthy nutrition makes for a natural partnership between the two organizations,” said Kate Goldman, Director, Government & Community Relations - Baptist Health South Florida. “The Garden’s community-building formula is about inviting any and all to do something together; to share a quality moment and feel good about it. At

the Miramar Disco Soups, strangers ‘chop to the beat’ to slice, dice and boogie, transforming blemished veggies into a deliciously prepared meal; at the Taste of the Garden events elementary school guests are invited to savor new flavors and explore the garden,” added Rose. The Intergenerational Fruit and Vegetable Garden was created to address higher-than-average levels of preventable chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity and heart disease. While working with partners and encouraging civic engagement, Miramar is actively fostering an environment for better health while providing low-cost nutritious food alternatives.

hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...

Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? The saying, "too many cooks in the kitchen" is the result when this occurs. An important detail in the planning process is to be particular about the source you may get a referral from. What's good for one, may in fact, not be good for another. Word of mouth is one of the best assets available, as it's good to hear a great review like going to a movie or a restaurant. Unfortunately, one must remember that there are other factors to consider such as individual tastes and budgets. Contracts, pricing and other factors also vary per event. One

One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. When hiring, keep in mind that you are entering a relationship of sorts, so you want to like who you are hiring. "Personality over price" is usually the way to go. At some point in the planning process, you will be spending much time with these individuals. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

his month more than three hundred 2018 Broward County graduates will be attending colleges and universities in Florida and around the country thanks to the Broward Education Foundation. This year a record-breaking $1.45 million in college scholarships were awarded at the Broward Education Foundation’s 2018 Scholarship Award Ceremony presented by BrightStar Credit Union. Scholarships ranged from $500 to four-year tuitions. Over the last 30 years, more than 5,800 scholarships totaling more than $13 million have been presented to deserving students through the partnership of Broward Education Foundation, local

universities, businesses and community leaders. Two excited and fortunate recipients of the generous scholarships are Le Asia Shillingford and Anisha Toomer, both Miramar High School graduates. Shillingford will attend FAMU and Toomer will attend Morgan State University. The Broward Education Foundation is dedicated to transforming the lives of Broward County Public School students through the support of quality education. They do this by raising funds to provide scholarships to deserving graduating seniors with a dream of continuing their education. Those that qualify will receive scholarships to attend a community college, university or a vocational school with the support from the Broward Advisors for Continuing Education (BRACE). Besides helping students achieve their dreams, the 501 (c) 3 organization also helps teachers. They have the Tools for Schools program to assist with classroom supplies, and this past year they awarded more than 290 grants to teachers totaling $175,000. Despite the large number of requests, all grants are reviewed and given on a competitive basis for teacher-initiated projects ranging from Art & Drama to Science & Technology. The need is always far greater than the funds available, so priority is given to programs designed to do one or more

of the following: Educate students in financial literacy, incorporate alternative learning strategies, promote interdisciplinary learning, involve parents, businesses, community organizations and/or social service agencies, bridge culture or ethnic barriers, involve a group of teachers collaborating to improve students learning at their school. Additionally, they created the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) Victims Fund. Fifty-six MSD students also received scholarships created in the wake of the tragedy. “It’s fitting as Broward Education Foundation begins its 35th anniversary year and thanks to the generosity of both longstanding and new donors, we substantially exceeded a long-time goal of awarding more than $1 million in scholarships to students in need,” said Broward Education Foundation Board Chair Christina Fischer. “We commend each of these students for their hard work, dedication and perseverance and have full faith and confidence that they all have bright futures ahead of them.”

Ankle Pain in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

T

he ankle joint is a complex structure composed of three bones, eleven ligaments, growth plates and cartilage that allow the ankle joint to move smoothly. Tendons move the foot in all directions across the ankle joint. Injuries to the ankle can affect any of these structures. Ankle pain in children is most commonly due to traumatic injuries. This can come from twisting the ankle during a sport or activity or from blunt trauma to the area. Here is a look at some of the common types of ankle pain in children and recommended treatments: Flat Feet: A primary source of ankle pain, especially in active children, is flat feet. Pain is most common on the inner aspect of the lower leg, ankle and foot. The condition is usually associated with premature fatigue and general avoidance of most activities that require running. If associated with tightness of the calf muscle, this can be a very harmful combination that can preclude most activities and cause chronic low-grade pain for many years. Immobilization of the

leg in a cast to stretch the tight muscles followed by orthotics and physical therapy are indispensable in not only eliminating the problem but allowing the child to participate in most activities at a much higher level than ever before. Growth Plates: Growth plates are present on the inner and outer aspect of the ankle bone. They are areas within the bone that allow bone growth. It is the weak link in the ankle when comparing it to the ligaments and bone structure. Injuries are most common in sports, especially soccer. Injuries usually cause a significant amount of pain, swelling and difficulty weightbearing. Examination usually reveals pinpoint tenderness on the growth plate itself. The treatment of these injuries is usually dictated by the injury type. Simpler injuries may be immobilized for a period of four to eight weeks. More moderate to severe injuries may require surgery to put the growth plates back into their normal position. Long-term prognosis is excellent for simple injuries and guarded for more complex ones. Fractures: Breaks of the bone can occur in the lower leg and in the ankle bone itself. They are usually accompanied by growth plate injuries. These injuries usually occur from twisting the ankle or foot, especially while playing sports. Swelling that is diffuse, discoloration and pain with any attempts at weightbearing are observed. Treatment for simple breaks

may require cast immobilization for a period of four to eight weeks. If the bones are out of place they may be gently manipulated back into position nonsurgically. If grossly malaligned, surgery may be necessary to restore normal anatomy. Prognosis is dependent on the bone injured with the type and the timing of treatment. Ligament Injuries: Usually less common in children and more common in teenagers, ligament injuries occur when the ligament is twisted beyond its elastic limits. This can cause a ligament to stretch, partially or completely tear. There is usually pinpoint tenderness over the ligament(s) involved. Significant swelling would be present in the front of the ankle and discoloration can extend along the outside of the foot, even down to the toes. Weightbearing is always difficult. Treatment of this condition is always to immobilize the ankle for a period of four to six weeks and follow with a short course of physical therapy. Prognosis is excellent in almost every case. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. There’s No Debate, Miramar Student is a Champion BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

his past summer more than 8,000 students, coaches, educators, and parents from across the country participated in the National Speech & Debate Association’s (NSDA) National Speech & Debate Championship. The annual tournament is the largest academic competition in the world, and Miramar High School student Daliss Hicks placed third or higher in every competition she participated in. Hicks’ dedication and effort are what got her to share their message on the final stage. Hicks participated in the Program Oral Interpretation (POI) in which a contestant must use articles, prose, poetry, and drama to craft a ten-minute performance around a central theme. The topic of her performance was the strong black woman stereotype and how many black women feel pressured by their loved ones to have an unrealistic amount of mental and emotional strength, to this prestigious competition. In February, she never breaking. competed against students from all over Broward “Daliss loves to address topics that are not usually County and placed second in the district competition talked about in her community. Her recent POI topic which was enough to qualify her to attend this was inspired because she performed a DI where year’s NSDA Championship in Fort Lauderdale. She her character was bi-polar. She received a comment additionally has numerous accolades on her growing that it was unbelievable because ‘black people’ do resume and has placed at many other local and state not have those type of problems. Thus, she feels tournaments. as if she provides a voice for those who are often Each event had over 200 competitors battling overlooked,” expressed Renea L. Moss, Director of

Speech and Debate, Miramar High School. Having worked tirelessly on her piece day and night and learning from each mistake to capitalize on all opportunities, Hicks said on the final stage, “The women in my family have taught me to be strong; but just like glass, every black woman has a breaking point.” After crafting a profound message, she finished as a national finalist, placing sixth in the country. Currently a Miramar High School senior, Hicks has been on the debate team since her freshman year. Because she was a finalist at Nationals, she received an automatic bid to Nationals next year which makes her a four-time qualifier. She aims to attend The Juilliard School or Florida State University majoring in theatre, possibly continuing her speech and debate journey. “I believe she is an old soul in a young mind. She is how own worst critic because she strives for perfection. She cares about the messages she sends out the people she touches,” added Moss.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Let’s Not Forget to be Prepared! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR iramarians, From POP-UP Yoga classes and Independence Day celebrations to aviation academy and technology bootcamp, it truly has been a busy, productive, and fun summer for all of us. I trust that all of our students have had a great start to the 20182019 school year and I wish them much academic and extra-curricular activities success in their studies and learning during this time. It’s hard to believe just one year ago, our city as well as other states and Caribbean islands were devastated by the impacts of Hurricane Irma. Your City first responders and city officials worked around the clock to ensure Miramar was cleaned up and returned to normalcy. I truly can’t say enough to praise the work of our Public Works & Utilities Department in addition to our Police and Fire Rescue. During the clean-up period, our city shined for it was neighbors assisting neighbors, showing our great Miramar spirit during tough times. It’s hard to believe that there are communities still plagued by the impacts of Irma and Miramar should be thankful for our City’s recovery. Although we were spared from the worst of Irma, our entire city must remain on guard for we are back again in the heart of hurricane season. Hurricane season officially runs June 1st through November 30th, and storms typically have been known to show up in South Florida during this part of the season. Just as our children prepared for their successful school year, all citizens need to remember to be prepared for the remainder of the season. To receive a copy of the Miramar Hurricane 2018 Hurricane Preparedness Guide, visit this link to download your family or business copy: www.miramarfl.gov/286/ hurricane-preparedness. On a brighter note, in recognition of “Hispanic Heritage Month”, the City of Miramar will host a Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday, September 22nd at 6 p.m. at the Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway, Miramar. We’ll provide live music, so you can dance the night away while listening to performers such as Proyecto Uno, Jimmy El Leon, Circuito 7, and more. I look forward to seeing everyone as we celebrate the contributions and heritage of our Hispanic Miramarians. Don’t forget to bring your flag! Yours in Service,

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Estate Planning for Blended Families BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

Y

ours, mine, and ours. Sadly, in America the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you,,and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Obviously, after the first spouse passes, the family dynamic can change dramatically; what the surviving spouse ends up doing with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. As we all know, blood is thicker than water. Let’s explore just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/she will take care of your children after you are gone, right? Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of this approach might be totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this: After you are gone, if your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Without thoughtful planning, your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse! Proper legal planning can avoid this potential pitfall. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your spouse and your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but here too this path may lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still protect them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse plays a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity, experience and know-how. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Learn How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Fraud BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS raud can happen to anyone. Criminals use clever techniques to defraud citizens of millions of dollars every year by convincing people to send them money and/or personal information. By following certain tips, you can protect yourself and your family from becoming a victim: Spot Imposters: Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, a family member, a charity, or a company you do business with. Don’t send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request — whether it comes as a text, a phone call, or an email. The IRS: The IRS will not call you personally. If someone tells you that you owe the IRS money and to pay over the phone or you will be arrested, IT’S A SCAM. Family Arrested Scam: If you receive a call that a family member is in jail and you need to post bond: ▸▸ First, call the family member and see if they answer. ▸▸ Then ask what bail bond company they are with and verify it’s a real business. ▸▸ If it’s a lawyer telling you that you must buy prepaid credit cards for payment “DON’T DO IT… IT’S A SCAM.” Injured / Kidnapped Family Member: Beware of calls telling you that a loved one was injured in an accident and that medical expenses must be paid before treatment or that they have been kidnapped and a ransom must be paid. Often times, their phone has been lost or stolen and scammers are just taking advantage of the situation. Your Bank/Credit Card Company Calling: Your bank or credit card company will NEVER call or email you and ASK YOU for your FULL social security number, date of birth, and bank/credit card account number. Do not disclose your pin, username or password for online banking either. Unsolicited Emails: Be cautious! They are often fraudulent. The best approach is simply to delete the email. No need to open it. If you believe the emails may be from your bank or credit card company, call them to verify. Stop Before you Pay: Scammers will request you to buy prepaid credit cards or to wire money through services like Western Union or MoneyGram. This is risky because it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. DON’T BUY PREPAID CREDIT CARDS FOR CALLERS! DON’T WIRE MONEY FOR CALLERS! Resist Pressure: Legitimate companies and charities will be happy to give you time to make a decision. It’s probably a scam if they demand that you act immediately or won’t take “no” for an answer. HANG UP THE PHONE! Talk to Someone: Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert — or just tell a friend. Check your Credit Reports: Everyone can request a free copy of their credit report once a year. Go to www.ftc.gov/credit or call 877-382-4357 for more details. If you find accounts that don’t belong to you or other incorrect information, follow the instructions for disputing those items.

THE WORLD’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE™ Pearl Gusewich took a holiday in Europe this past summer where she fully enjoyed indulging the five senses. The sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of local culinary delights were certainly highlights. However, she loved being able to visit historic places such as the Marksburg Castle in Germany. The only hilltop castle along the Rhine River which was never destroyed, made the perfect backdrop for a souvenir photo with Our City Miramar.

“CANDY”

of the

Month

Candy is independent, a great communicator, and very sweet, despite being an Instagram celebrity @TheMiamiMalteses. She uses eye contact with her big, round black eyes to mysteriously get her message across to Mommy. Candy just turned 8. After eating her birthday cupcake, she was last seen stalking and capturing a lizard that was taunting her. Don’t mess with Candy!
