Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This 3D technology is available at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center at the Weston-main campus and at the new Coral Springs Family Health Center. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” Maria Artze, MD says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses Cassann Blake, MD and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy
(tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Blake or Dr. Margaret Thompson in Weston or Coral Springs, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/BreastCancer.

A Bountiful Harvest
T
he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area. Remember, October harvests happen in paradise too!

Cheers to the 2nd Annual Burger & Brew Fest BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he annual Burger & Brew Fest was the perfect end to a toasty summer. Thousands came out to the Miramar Town Center on a gorgeous South Florida evening to eat, drink, and dance. The free event in the Plaza featured some of best grilled burgers, craft drinks, and other local novelty and food vendors. The night kicked off with local Latin sensation, Jose Torreros taking the stage encouraging everyone to get on their feet and dance. DJ Bankz (@djbankz) kept the good vibes with a mix of hip hop, dancehall and top 40
tracks while patrons enjoyed the delicious fare and libations provided by a variety of area vendors. Notable vendors included Bae’s Burgers & Grilled Cheese, Bahama Breeze, Da Burger Shack, Our Humble Abode, Madrecita’s Bistro, Twelve Pepper Co., Cheeseburger Baby and OliveOnion. This year, The City of Miramar raised the stakes for the vendors with a “Best Burger Contest”. Each vendor had an opportunity to create a mouthwatering masterpiece for a special panel of judges. The ambitious group took a chance to win first, second or third place trophies, and of course bragging rights for the year. Judges included Start Up FIU Food Chefs: Chef Celine Serret, a F&B Professor at FIU’S China campus, Chef Mark Traynor, a Miramar Resident and Food professor at FIU’s Biscayne Campus, and Chef Larry Robinson, Owner of the Rum Cake Factory. Start Up FIU’s Program Director Anna Etienne also attended to support her cohorts. The panel was rounded out with Carolyn Gunnis, Executive Editor of The Miami Times and Garth Reeves, VP of Development at The Miami Times. “I am impressed with the energy and orga-

New Hope for Patients Suffering from Pancreas and Liver Cancer
T
here is NEW HOPE for families of patients undergoing treatment for Pancreas or Liver Cancer. Families that have been told they have no further options can now look into IRENanoknife, a new, minimally invasive, cancer treatment that is showing significant long-term survival. Some Patients have seen a doubling or even tripling of their life expectancy following the procedure, according to recently published reports. During the procedure, fine needle probes are placed throughout the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure no injury to critical struc-
tures. High voltage electrical pulses are then passed through the tumor, killing it. The procedure is preformed, as an outpatient procedure in the operating room, by Dr Robert Donoway, a Sloan Kettering trained Pancreas and Liver Cancer Surgeon and a Pioneer of the technique. Dr. Donoway has been in practice, in South Florida, for over 28 years. He is the former medical director and chairman of the Memorial Health Care and Aventura Hospital Cancer programs and is the former Chief of Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. “The procedure is highly effective and kills the tumor almost immediately,” commented Dr. Donoway, “This allows faster resumption of chemotherapy and radiation, leading to faster and better tumor response to those therapies.” Dr Donoway has performed hundreds of the procedures with many of his patients coming from overseas.

Miramar Senior Takes a BYTE Out of an Opportunity to Further Her Education
Aurora Oliphant
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
urora Oliphant isn’t a stereotypical senior who likes to sit back and enjoy retirement. This active 70-year-old Miramar resident still wants to gain knowledge and participate in the community. She recently graduated with eight others from Senior Planet, a new program offered by the South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) and sponsored by Citrix. Initially, SoFIA noticed a demand for this type of education from the organization’s existing volunteers, who would ask for help with things like using Uber to get to a doctor’s appointment or finding housing online. The non-profit’s response was to develop a tech program to meet those needs and connect and empower seniors to handle their affairs independently. Currently, Senior Planet has received over 400 calls from interested seniors. The 10-week free course teaches seniors (60+ years-old) the technology
basics to keep them connected to the changing world around them. Oliphant learned about the class through her involvement in SoFIA’s Foster Grandparent Program. This amazing program places senior volunteers into Title One schools, nonprofit childcare centers and preschools throughout Broward County to support the most underserved students who are at risk of failing academically. “With the support of our sponsors, we are able to offer the successful Senior Planet classes to the community free of charge,” said SoFIA President and CEO Peter Kaldes, Esq. “Not to be comfortable with technology in today’s world is to be isolated and disenfranchised. From connecting with family, to submitting a resume on a job site or researching a doctor, technology is a tool that helps older adults thrive.” Oliphant learned in “Computer

It’s No Shock that Ten Year Miramar FPL Veteran is Recognized BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
n a late Sunday morning at the end of the summer, Florida Power and Light (FPL) celebrated its skilled lineworkers for their efforts including Miramar’s own Esteban Perez, one of the 3,000line specialists in the state. This year marked the seventh annual “Florida
Lineworker Appreciation Day”, which the state established in 2012 to honor the men and women responsible for keeping the lights on throughout Florida. FPL recognizes the critical role lineworkers play in delivering safe, reliable energy to customers and wants to celebrate and honor the skilled, professional men and women who go above and beyond for nearly 5 million customers. Esteban has been with FPL for ten years and he has certainly seen how the grid’s technology has evolved over the years. His daily responsibilities are high-pressure and often dangerous. This line of work ranges from climbing poles and operating bucket trucks to constructing overhead and underground power lines. “Esteban has been an integral part of our team of talented line specialists for the past decade. Each day, he brings an excellent work ethic and plays an important role in delivering safe and reliable energy to our customers, nearly 50 percent better than the national average,” said Lee Hubbs, Broward County Area Manager. “We thank him and all our line specialists for their daily commitment and dedication to their craft.”
On August 24, an FPL crew worked in the Miramar area, installing a new, stronger power line pole that will improve service to nearby area customers. The crew included the dedicated FPL Line Specialist who has been part of FPL’s largest power restoration efforts, including Hurricane Irma, which he says was his proudest moment in 10 years working for FPL. “I know that whatever I did that day was worth something. I was able to fix something, big or small, but it was a huge impact on somebody’s life,” said Perez. Florida Power & Light Company, the third-largest electric utility in the United States, is proud of all their electrical workers. They are appreciative of the hard work and commitment to building a stronger and smarter grid and delivering reliable electric service that ranks among the best in the nation.

FALL FUN BY STACEY BOMSER
J
ust because the temperature really doesn’t dip, and the leaves don’t change color, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the fall season in South Florida. From pumpkin patches to hayrides, there are endless opportunities to usher in autumn and create your own fall festival.
Pick a Pumpkin This time of year, pumpkin patches are popping up on practically every corner. While they’re great photo ops for taking adorable pictures of the kids, these pumpkin patches are also the perfect place to find your future jack-o’-lantern. You can roam the rows of these giant, bright orange squash, searching for that perfect specimen. So, how do you decide which of the literally thousands of pumpkins to pick? According to thekitchn.com, there are six simple steps to picking the perfect pumpkin. 1. Pick it up and tap it: It should feel sturdy. When you tap it, you should hear a hollow sound. 2. Check the coloring: Choose one that has consistent coloring throughout. 3. Look for bad spots: Try to choose a pumpkin without any scratches, bruises, or dark spots. 4. Apply pressure: Flip the pumpkin upside down and apply pressure with your thumbs. If it’s not completely sturdy, the pumpkin isn’t fresh and will rot quickly. 5. Set it down: Make sure it sits flat, unless you want your jack-o’lantern to sit a little crooked.
Harvestthe Family Fun this 6. Carry it from the bottom: Don’t carry it by the stem — instead, cradle it from the bottom or tote it home in a bag. It’s important to keep in mind that not all pumpkins are created equally. There is a difference between ‘pie pumpkins’ and ‘carving pumpkins.’ Carving pumpkins are typically thinner, making them easier to saw into. They also tend to have less ‘guts’, so they’re easier to clean. On the other

hand, pie pumpkins are usually smaller and rounder and more ‘meaty’ inside.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
Miramar Has a Gem in the Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS

iramar resident and Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU) student Judith Cabrera worked incredibly hard to recently win a contest by Brosway. The fashion design student entered a school contest last year sponsored by the Italian-based jewelry brand which brings trend-setting European styles to the United States. Brosway partnered with MIU to offer students the opportunity to participate in a contest to design a set of three jewelry pieces that include a ring, necklace, bracelet, earrings or ankle bracelet. The Havana, Cuba born designer had very little growing up, but was always enamored with fashion. She would design new clothing out of old ones, alter school uniforms, and win sewing contests. She desired to come to America to pursue her passion and her dream. Fortunately, she arrived thirteen years ago when she was sixteen years old, and she is making her dream a reality.

Cabrera was anxious to take on the challenge and her collection entitled “Worldhood” features four necklaces, one bracelet and two sets of cufflinks. The novelty charms resemble road signs showcasing a stainless-steel look with black enamel detailing. Each individual piece in the exciting collection also contains a hidden message.
Cabrera with Worldhood Collection
“My ‘Worldhood’ collection is inspired by graffiti art and things we see every day in our community,” said Cabrera, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at MIU. “The message for these designs is to encourage our generation to slow down and take a break from technology. If we stop and take a look at our surroundings, we can see new meaning in ordinary things.”
Earlier this year, Cabrera was elated as she was announced the winner at the university’s annual student fashion show. The pieces were first unveiled at this year’s JCK show, the premier trade show highlighting the latest jewelry trends in Las Vegas. “We are pleased to unveil a collection that combines Cabrera’s incredible talent and powerful messaging to create a truly unique and powerful jewelry collection,” says Beatrice Beleggia, Brosway export and communication manager. “We hope that this collection will speak to all generations on a deeper and more impactful level.” The collection ranges from $35-$40 and is available for purchase in Brosway’s flagship store at the Miami International Mall as well as on the brand’s website. Cabrera has displayed her work in various exhibits, including her Guayabera-inspired design for Perry Ellis in New York and Caron Paris inspired design in Red Dot during Art Basel. She has also learned about French craftsmanship of Haute Couture in Paris.

Osteoarthritis of the Foot and Ankle BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
O
steoarthritis is a wearing out of the cartilage at the end of the bones that form a joint. The cartilage gives us smooth gliding joints and allows the joint to function without pain. When the cartilage wears down, bones start to rub against each other causing pain. Swelling and bone spurs develop around the joint as well. It is usually caused by injuries to the joint from trauma or from repetitive stress. Abnormal bone and joint position may also be present that may be hereditary in nature or acquired over time. Stiffness in the joint (foot or ankle) is almost always present. When getting up from sitting or when getting out of bed there may be difficulty weightbearing. As one walks it may improve. Over time the stiffness lasts longer and the joint starts to ache. There will be a chronic low-grade swelling to the joint that is affected and difficulty with certain exercises or shoe gear will also be present. There will be tenderness around the joint and pain with moving the joint. Difficulty running
or being generally active because of the pain will also be present. Treatment is aimed at identifying the joint
involved and reducing the inflammation. Oral or injectible medication will help to reduce some of the inflammation and proper shoe gear or orthot-
ics may help to lessen the inflammation around the area. Physical therapy may be necessary to improve range of motion and stability. When conservative care fails, arthroscopic procedures may be necessary to remove any of the damaged tissue in the joint. Open procedures may also be needed if the joint is not accessible to arthroscopy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary on the joint itself to reposition the bones in the joint giving them better position, allowing more normal mobility. If arthritis is severe, joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary and will have a huge positive impact on one’s life, allowing freedom of mobility to perform activities of daily living and also sports. Prognosis is good to excellent in almost all cases. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. The New Fiscal Year Begins This Fall BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR s we begin the new fiscal year in Miramar, I would like to share some information regarding our city budget. As we all manage our own household affairs, it is a big undertaking to strike the right balance of the City’s level of service and how much residents are asked to pay. The city’s budget is approximately $250,000,000 with 875.5 Full Time Equivalent employees staffing fifteen departments. The primary purpose for our government is to work on behalf of our residents and corporations to provide, Public Safety, Utilities, and other government services. A few highlights of the Fiscal 2018-2019 Budget are as follows: To improve public safety, we will hire more police officers for our Police Department as well as acquire additional Fire Rescue assets to improve response times and patient care. To improve the quality of our parks city wide, the budget provides for improvements to restroom facilities, playing fields and court upgrades. Other provisions addressed in the budget replenish fund balance and emergency funds, address pensions and establish a Miramar Economic Development Fund to assist the city’s efforts to continue the growth of our strong economy. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Planning for the Unexpected BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE t’s Tuesday morning. Your husband’s flight to Venezuela just departed. In the family room, twoyear-old Sophia is amusing herself while waiting for Jennifer, your new 16-year-old neighbor who has been babysitting a few mornings this summer. It’s your special time to run errands or get in some exercise. Today is the perfect day to try out a new pair of rollerblades. Lace up. Ear buds in. Sunscreen on. You tell Jennifer you’ll be back in about 90 minutes and off you go to the local park. It’s unusually quiet this morning. While skating along at a fast pace, you hit a rock, lose your balance and fly wildly out of control into a swale of high grass, where your phone ends up behind a bush and you hit your head. Everything goes dark. Thankfully, a jogger finds you and calls 911. You are transported to a hospital but are unconscious. With no identification, the hospital doesn’t know who you are or whom to call. Hours later, Jennifer becomes concerned when you don’t return home as expected. She calls your cell phone, but there’s no answer. She also tries your husband’s number which goes directly to voice mail. Afternoon arrives and Jennifer begins to really worry. She has plans of her own, and you were supposed to be home hours ago. What should she do? She calls her own mother who advises, “Call the police.”

954.885.0085 Two uniformed officers arrive and ask questions. They check police reports and hospitals. There is an unidentified woman at a local hospital who may be the missing mom, but she is unconscious. The police evaluate the situation and determine there is no family member present to take care of Sophia. What happens next is a parent’s nightmare. Your daughter is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Is our story farfetched? Probably. But while this type of scenario is not likely to happen to your family, it reminds us to make sure we plan for the unexpected. At a minimum, every family should have standard written babysitter instructions which include contact information for family members and friends who should be contacted if parents cannot be reached. In addition, an attorney can help to prepare a Power of Attorney for Childcare, authorization for the care, custody, medical care, and even travel for your minor children. It is certainly not necessary to consult an attorney to put together babysitter instructions. This is something that parents can create on their own. However, other legal documents are best drafted by an experienced estate planning attorney who can offer counsel and ensure that documents are properly prepared and executed. You want to make sure your legal documents work when you need them. Having a family plan for the unexpected may help keep small incidents from becoming big problems. Life can change in an instant. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Halloween Safety Tips BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS ostumes, parties and candy make Halloween a fun-filled time for kids and parents. The Miramar Police Department would like everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Halloween. Help make trick-or-treating safe by following these safety tips: ▸▸ Talk to your kids about hoaxes and pranks. They might be meant for laughs but could have tragic endings. ▸▸ Drive below the posted speed limit in residential areas during trick-or-treating hours. This will allow you time to brake if you see a child dart in front of you. Children should always go out trick-or-treating with a responsible adult. Trick-or-treaters should not cut through fields, backyards or unlit areas. Be sure to show your children how to cross a street properly. Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume. Costumes should be fire proof or treated with fire retardant. Masks should have eye holes large enough for good peripheral vision. If your child is carrying a prop such as a sword or pitchfork, make sure that the tips are smooth and flexible enough to not cause injury. Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. Teach your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Explain why this is not a good idea and what to do if someone approaches them and tries to talk to them. Explain to kids of all ages the difference between tricks and vandalism. Throwing eggs is vandalism. Keep pets indoors, but keep in mind animals may become alarmed if they do not recognize you or your children wearing costumes. Most importantly, please report any suspicious activity to the police right away.
