Not a smoker? You Could Still Be at Risk for Lung Cancer There is a common misconception that if someone has never smoked that they aren’t at risk for lung cancer. While tobacco smoking is the number one cause, Bruno Bastos, MD Oncologist there are other Cleveland Clinic Florida factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma Some in our society believe that diagnosis of lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke only. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.”

Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said.

therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.”

The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.

There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos said “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop

Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos.

Decrease Your Risk Even though you can develop the disease without having ever been a smoker, if you are someone who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smokefree increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/lungcancer or call 800.639.DOCTOR today.

We Have Much to be Thankful For

M

any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

Volunteers Help Bring the Miramar Community Garden Back to Life! COMMUNITY NEWS

O

n September 23rd Elsi Rose Rose, the City’s guardian of the Miramar Community Garden, began her day at the garden just a bit disappointed. After announcing the volunteer cleanup opportunity at Hands On Broward (HOB) website, the first person to arrive that morning was one young girl. But it didn’t dampen her spirits. Then one by one, people began to arrive. Suddenly, a group of six strong students came on the scene and her hopes were high! As posted on the HOB site, the requirements / requests were noted: ▸▸ To participate in the workday please complete and sign a waiver. The waiver is available on the HOB website. ▸▸ Please bring gardening tools, if possible; remember to dress appropriately. Protect yourself from the sun, and don’t forget drinking water! Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent - community service hours are available! ▸▸ Please be at the garden at 8am.

They held the workday on that Saturday from 8-11 am. They needed all the help they could as Irma left the garden a bit upside-down … but nothing they couldn’t repair with TLC and helping hands. Again, on the October workday, the Alpha Eta Rho team from Florida Memorial University came to the rescue. The MCG, once disheveled by Hurricane Irma, is back in order. Butterflies and caterpillars have returned to the Miramar Community Garden. As they say, “A picture is worth 1000 words.” Contributing families and students, under Elsi’s and members’ guidance, prevailed! The Miramar Community Garden hosts open volunteer days on most 3rd Saturdays of the month. Those interested in participating can sign up through Hands On Broward at: https://handsonbroward.org/#/.

Miramar Kiwanis Hosts Horses & Handicapped Event BY HELEN PENLAND

T

hroughout the months of October and April, Miramar Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club participates in the Kiwanis Horses & Handicapped program. It is a rare, unique, equineassisted physical therapy program for children and young adults with physical or mental challenges. The therapy is provided free of charge to all participants and their families. Funding comes through the Kiwanis Clubs’ fundraising efforts, and includes all Kiwanis clubs in South Broward. Miramar Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club is hosting the riding date on November 18th.

More About the Program

Founded in 1979, Kiwanis Horses and Handicapped, Inc. has developed into the leading equine therapeutic riding program it is today. During its 38 years in existence it has grown tremendously. Presently all Kiwanis Clubs in Broward and Dade Counties participate and serve about 60 riders. Children must have permission from their primary attending doctor to participate. Registered physical therapists work with each riding instructor and set realistic goals for individual riders.

Benefits

When the riders are no longer restricted by the confines of their braces and wheelchairs, amazing things happen. They “take to the saddle” and suddenly they are in control experiencing a sense of independence they rarely feel! Together with the friendly, warm companion horse they mount, it nurtures their self-esteem.

14

NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR

The horse is not just a clinical aid. It becomes a friend. Most importantly, it helps give them the strength and resolute to move through their daily trials. It’s been proven that riding therapy has positive effects on many physical and mental disabilities. The website (http://kiwanishorses.org/) lists several, including but not limited to: Autism, Amputees, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Mental Impairments, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida, Visual and Hearing Impairments. Riders in the program often experience increased balance, coordination, muscle tone, improved attention span, improvement in self-esteem, and more.

The Volunteers

Volunteers are at the core and the pillar for this program to succeed. Each rider must be accompanied by volunteers; there is one on each side (or “sidewalk”) of the horse and participant and another to lead. At times, a participant requires a fourth volunteer to ride with them. Most volunteers are from Kiwanis clubs, local high schools and colleges, and the local community. Generally, a class of six riders requires at least 18 volunteers, three or four for each participant. The club is open to additional volunteers for November 18th. Contact Angie Font at kiwanismpp@gmail.com or call 786-2828600. The address is 5050 SW 73 Ave. They ride from 8:30 to Noon.

Arc Broward Direct Support Professionals Show Commitment During Irma COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

16

W

hen it comes to heroes during a stressful time of need, not many compare to the Direct Support Professionals (DSP) at Arc Broward. Their commitment to the participants in Arc Broward’s many programs and the passion for the work they do truly showed before, during, and after Hurricane Irma. Arc Broward staff started preparing one week prior to Hurricane Irma. Generally, Arc Broward follows the county school schedule except for the residential facilities which never close. To ensure that residents maintained power, they began moving residents the Saturday before into their facilities with generators. Several of them were living in Miramar. Early moves allowed residents to become accustomed to their temporary quarters. 48 people were relocated to a facility in Davie, supported by 40 staff members. The remainder were moved to another location in Coral Springs. A total of 66 residential participants were supported. Both places were equipped with generators and as it turned out, all the regular residential homes lost power during the storm. Fortunately, the 10 locations suffered minimal damage but much food was lost and there were some fences and roofs damaged. There was also quite a lot of tree debris. Most residents were back in their respective homes by the Tuesday following Hurricane Irma, after power was restored. Arc Tech, located near the Fort Lauderdale airport, was reopened by September 14th.

NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR

Not only did many staff leave their own families and homes to care for the residents, they also continued to serve the in-home participants. They kept communication open with all families in every program and helped take care of urgent needs. They provided respite care, sending staff to homes so families could take care of personal needs or get back to work. The main campus for Arc Broward also lost power and they were forced to close their programs for approximately a week. However, that didn’t stop them! Arc Culinary partnered with the City of Sunrise to prepare meals track using the city’s Grand Ballroom kitchen for city employees until they could get back on track. Now, Arc Tech and Arc Culinary are fully operational. Programs resumed activity on September 18th. Arc Culinary is back to preparing meals for more than 400 persons per day at the main facility. Students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They love to cook, making healthy meals for the staff and participants. Arch Tech students continue to learn about their individual specialties, whether repairing computers or learning about software. As Dennis Haas, President and CEO and Julie Price, Chief Operating Officer both said in an email, they saw “just what it takes to be a DSP. To see their faces alongside our residents after the storm demonstrated why at Arc Broward, truly, “We Arc Smilin’!”

eniors without a vehicle have one less thing to worry about. Primary Care Physicians of Florida (PCPFL) offer its patients free round-trip transportation to any of their 11 locations. They also make house calls to care for the senior population which is a primary focus of their growing practice. The practice opened its doors in 1977 with only one physician. Fast forward 4 decades, and they now offer eleven convenient locations from Aventura to Margate, with free transportation service to all locations making it easy for patients to see any of their specialists. The PCPFL team strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of the patient healthcare process, from the preliminary screening to ongoing treatment, maintenance and support. They want the medical experience to be easy and flexible while providing the best possible patient care for everyone that visits anyone of their practices. A full line of Primary Care Specialties, including Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine are all offered creating a convenient one-stop office for all their patients’ medical needs. Founding physician Moises Issa, M.D. F.A.C.S.G., answered some commonly asked questions about his growing practice. Where are you located? We have an office in Memorial Hospital West and the Capriccio Plaza in Pembroke Pines, two in Hollywood and others in Plantation, Davie, Aventura, Sunrise, Coral Springs, Margate, and our newest in Lauderdale Lakes..

What specialties does your practice offer? We have a variety of specialists, including the areas of dermatology, cardiology, optometry, ophthalmology, podiatry, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. One trend we see in South Florida is the aging population, how is PCPFL adapting to this? We especially cater to the senior population by providing a ride to any one of our offices, offering the Silver Sneakers fitness program, treating age-related medical issues or making house calls. We see patients as young as 12 years old to those celebrating centennial birthdays.

It’s “Flu Season”, do you recommend vaccinations? We recommend flu vaccines to all our patients, especially our seniors. Flu vaccines are available in all our offices six days a week. Call 954-883-9107 to schedule a shot today. What differentiates you from the competition? Our complimentary transportation, same day appointments, in-house pharmacy, in-house specialists, and easy appointment scheduling certainly sets us apart from other doctor offices. Plus, we always welcome walk-ins, have long hours, are open on Saturdays, have a multi-lingual staff, and even make house calls. We believe that a key ingredient to quality healthcare and improved wellbeing is access to care, so we organized a transportation system to help our patients receive regular checkups and preventative care to keep them healthy. Our air-conditioned company vans provide round-trip

non-emergency transport to any of our South Florida locations regardless of where the patient lives. For instance, a Hollywood patient can make an appointment in Aventura, or even Margate if that’s where they want to go. What services do you offer? We offer a broad number of services such as asthma treatments, immunizations, x-rays, on-site labs, immigration and school physicals, glasses and contacts, dental and hearing services, diagnostic imaging, an in-house pharmacy, a wound care center, diabetic testing & clinical research, and weight loss programs. What hospitals are you affiliated with? We are affiliated with Memorial HealthCare and the HCA Hospital (Westside Regional and Aventura Medical Center). Do you accept insurance? We accept most Medicare Advantage plans as well as all major insurance companies in South Florida. Do you treat diabetics? We are proud of our diabetic testing and clinical research. By utilizing leading-edge technology, we have been able to treat chronic diabetic patients, and have been successful in removing insulin and pills from many patient treatment regiments. How can patients make an appointment? It’s easy, please call 954-883-9107 and our attentive staff will be ready to assist.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Miramar High School has a new Director of Bands! Welcome Emmanuel Rodriguez!

24

BY HELEN PENTLAND

U

nder the direction of Mr. Rodriguez, the Miramar High School Soldier Band Program is composed of many moving parts: Miramar “Soldier Band from Patriot Land” Marching Band; Patriot Jazz Band; Symphonic and Concert Band; Chamber Ensembles; Percussion Ensemble and Drumline; Sophisticated Sapphire Dancers; Sassy Sweetheart Majorettes; and Silver Strutter Flagettes. The Miramar High School Band Program has received numerous Superior and Excellent ratings at District and State Music Performance Assessments over several years. The Miami Herald once wrote “The Miramar High School Band Program is one of the best high school bands in the State of Florida.” But the status does not come easily; it’s only accomplished with great leadership and a lot of practice. Although he oversees the entire program, Mr. Rodriguez has three “helpers” who work with the auxiliary teams. Joanne Rouza works with the Majorettes, Tyra Knight assists with the Dance team, and Gerthy Eugene handles the Flag team. In addition, Assistant Band Director Jason Fernandez facilitates the administrative portion of the programs.

NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR

Every group has a stringent practice schedule. They practice for three hours per day, five days a week and sometimes on Saturdays. Along with great leadership, this is how the Miramar High School Band has achieved such success! Originally from New York, Emmanuel and his family moved to Broward County when he was five years old. He subsequently attended Florida A&M University, majoring in Music Education. Of course, he was in the band; he played the saxophone and was also the Band President. He then returned to Broward County when he was hired as the Assistant Band Director at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach. Hired in May of this year, Emmanuel now brings his expertise and vision to the students who make up the Bands at Miramar High School. He is inspired by the children’s willingness and eagerness to learn. Kids have a chance to express themselves through music. Emmanuel said he is fortunate to have the opportunity to open their minds to loving music and becoming advocates for music in the future. Miramar High School and Broward County Public Schools are lucky and proud to have him!

At the same time, the agenda encourages them “to develop their unique gifts as global scholars.” According to their website, the program’s vision is: “To develop students who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged learners that understand global issues with multiple perspectives.” Cambridge schools offer a much wider range of courses to help students become extremely constructive contributors to society in their future lives. Every course in the curriculum continually connects the classes taught and issues that surround them. Classes include Science, English, and Social Studies. All students living in a zoned area for Glades Middle School are eligible. The Cougar Path Cambridge Academy encourages its students to develop disciplined thinking in a rational yet open-minded manner, informed by evidence. It also supports global citizenship as well as promoting the importance of 21st century skills. The CPCA course of study is supplemented throughout the year with diverse field trips selected to increase students’ depth of knowledge. What Is A Cataract? BY DR. MICHAEL CHESEN

C

EYE CARE

ataracts are the leading cause of decreased vision in adults older than 65. It is the most common surgical procedure for elderly people. You can still get an “age-related” cataract when you are in your 40s or 50s, although most likely it will be small and not rob you of your vision. Only 15 percent of people are affected with cataracts by age 55, but this figure jumps to 50 percent by age 75, and 90 percent by age 85. It is important to note, however, that cataracts worsen over time … so it’s never too late-or early-to try to prevent them and/or treat them.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opaque spot on the lens of the eye that you can’t see through. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil, and works like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, which allows you to see things clearly, both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. The haze can vary in size, density, and location, which means its effect on your vision will also vary. At first, many people experience an overall reduction in their vision. They may need more light to read by or may have difficulty reading street signs while driving. A cataract can also affect depth perception, which is particularly dangerous for the elderly, who are more prone to falling.

Common symptoms of cataracts include:

Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy, or filmy vision Changes in the way you see colors Problems driving at night because headlights seem too bright Problems with glare from lamps or the sun Frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription Double vision Better near vision (temporarily in farsighted people only) Note: These symptoms also can be signs of other eye problems

What causes cataracts?

▸▸ Free radicals - natural by products of metabolism - are highly reactive chemicals that cause oxidation, which in turn causes aging. ▸▸ Toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and smoking ▸▸ Diabetes (high levels of sugar in the blood contribute to cataract formation, so it’s not surprising that diabetics are 3-4 times more likely to have cataracts) ▸▸ The protein in the lens changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years, and hardens and loses its ability to focus.

Treatment of cataracts

Cataracts can only be treated surgically. This procedure would be performed by an Ophthalmologist, and is often an outpatient procedure. The surgery often involves placement of intraocular lens (IOL), which is used to replace the eyes natural lens, which is removed in the cataract surgery. Glasses may be required for far/near correction following the procedure, depending on the type IOL used and the surgical outcome. The pre- and post-surgical care of the cataract patient may be and often is provided by an Optometrist. Dr. Michael Chesen can assist patients in finding the appropriate Ophthalmologist for their care and can be reached at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Miramar Cleans Up Quickly BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

T

he city of Miramar survived another hurricane and we have a lot to be thankful for; our fellow citizens in Texas and Puerto Rico were not as fortunate. Despite not experiencing much structural damage in our city, Irma did cause significant vegetative damage and an estimate of 400,000 cubic yards of debris to be cleaned up. Our city rallied together to begin the long process of restoring our properties and infrastructure. Despite having to remove trees and damaged fences, the residents of Miramar didn’t allow the storm to hinder their sprits. All over our city I witnessed neighbors helping neighbors in the wake of destruction. Observing the post-Irma clean up initiatives amongst neighbors and good Samaritans showcased the amazing community unity that exists right here in Miramar. Our first responders, public works and utilities employees quickly cleared our streets and Miramar was able to resume normal transit activity despite the aftermath of Irma. Now, that our roads are cleared and power has been restored, Miramar continues our efforts to collect the massive amounts of debris that was left behind. Despite the market challenges to secure haulers due to the high demand caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in four states, Miramar has removed debris from over one third of our zones and will work dawn to dusk until it is all gone. We have learned many lessons in this unprecedented hurricane season and together Miramar is well on our way to normalcy. I use this opportunity to remind residents that we are still in hurricane season and to fine tune your hurricane plans just as the City will continue to fine tune ours. For more ways to stay up to date with the post-Irma clean up initiatives and services happening here in Miramar, please visit the Alert Center housed on the City of Miramar webpage. The alert center allows you to view all alerts and emergencies in your area. You can also check the site to view any upcoming city events! Yours in Service,

Mayor Wayne Messam The Office of the Commission is located at 2300 Civic Center Place, Miramar 33025. To contact please call, 954-602-3198 or visit www.miramarfl.gov.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Talking About Death

S

ooner or later we all die. It will happen to me. As upsetting as it may be to think about, it will happen to you, too. It’s simply a fact. And while we don’t know when or how death will occur, we hope the end comes peacefully when we are very old, surrounded by those we love, having lived a long and good life. No one lives forever. Death is a part of life, yet most people find the topic very difficult to think about and especially hard to discuss with others. Talking about what will happen to your family when you pass away can be a very emotional subject. And, as with all emotionally-charged subjects, it is often easier to ignore or think about later. Is estate planning on your “to do” list? Perhaps you are superstitious. Can just talking about something make it more likely to happen?

It is common for me to learn that new clients have taken months, often years, from the time they first started thinking about estate planning to when they called our office to schedule a consultation. For many, life provides a burst of motivation encouraging you to take care of matters sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare or a vacation overseas? It may also be seeing the aftermath of a tragedy or the death of a friend or family member. Without proper planning, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind after the death of a loved one, during a very emotional time. Is that the last “gift” you want to leave to those you love? So how do you prepare to face what may happen to your family after you are gone? Is it necessary to have a will, a durable power of attorney, or other estate planning documents? The best place to start is by educating yourself as to what estate planning is. There are many websites devoted to wills, trusts, and other documents that you can explore. Look at our website and blog at www.idenlaw.com. By learning about the subject, it may be easier to discuss your needs. It won’t make you an expert, but when you consult an attorney you will be better prepared to formulate questions, which leads to the next step. Consider contacting an estate planning attorney to arrange a consultation. Many estate planning attorneys do not charge for this initial meeting. Keep in mind that you need to feel comfortable and at ease with the attorney and office staff you select. Chemistry is important, as are qualifications. Find someone you trust. Remember not all attorneys specialize in estate planning; some just dabble. Ask questions. Do your research. Look for competence and shared values. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
