Your family doctor: The benefits of a primary care provider Cleveland Clinic Florida offers comprehensive primary care services for Weston and SW Broward families. As life changes, so do the healthcare needs for yourself and your loved ones. You may want to consider choosing a primary care physician – family medicine or internal medicine physician – who can be your partner in health and wellness. “We’re trained to provide comprehensive care for patients age six and up,” said Hermann Stubbe, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida family medicine Hermann Stubbe, MD physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Family Health Center. “We treat a variety of conditions – from allergies and ear infections to orthopaedic issues and women’s health.” Knows family history Many patients are unsure about health concerns and diseases in their family tree. Since a primary care physician often cares for a family from one generation to the next, they know the family’s medical history. “We often see grandparents, children and grandchildren. This aids in our ability to not only care for an individual, but to care for the family as a whole,” said Dr. Stubbe. No need for multiple physicians In most cases, family and internal medicine physicians can address multiple medical needs during an office visit or they can make referrals to the appropriate specialist(s), if necessary. “Over time, your primary care physician knows you well – including your health history, family history, and risk factors – so we can advocate Dunia Hernandez, MD for you and help you navigate the healthcare system,” explained Dr. Dunia Hernandez, a Cleveland Clinic Florida internal medicine physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston main campus. Long-term, trusting relationships Patients are often too shy or embarrassed to talk about medical concerns or certain topics. “Since we have longstanding relationships with our patients, a degree of trust is established,” said Dr. Hernandez. It makes it easier to talk about issues when there’s a level of comfort and camaraderie.” To make an appointment with Dr. Stubbe, Dr. Hernandez or any other primary care physician at a convenient Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston location, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment to make an appointment online. n America, we traditionally take time to reflect on life during November. We think about our families, our community, our country and the people we love. We are thankful for all these things and more. It is sometimes difficult to reflect on the good things in life. We live in an era of constant communication and conflict. Many popular media outlets capitalize on the things that divide us. At Our City we focus on the things that bring us together. We publish news about our community with a decidedly positive voice. You won’t see any opinion columns written to demonize one group of people or another. We believe that 100 people pulling on a rope in the same direction can accomplish anything, while 50 people pulling on each end of a rope can accomplish nothing. Check out The Our City Dining Guide in this issue and on our website. It’s a selection of our staff’s favorite restaurants from around the area. These are some of the best places to host a holiday party, enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, or to grab a quick bite with friends after work. You could even visit one of these restaurants with the people you love for no reason other than to give thanks you have them in your life. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

and Latin Americans, and we will continue to observe their beautiful heritage and culture. Our residents come from different backgrounds which we capture annually through a variety of celebrations. We will continue to embrace our community,” stated Miramar resident Tennille Decoste. According to the United States Census Bureau, 57.5 million people or 18% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. This represents a significant increase from 2000, which registered the Hispanic population at 35.3 million or 13% of the total U.S. population. This year the special tribute, sponsored by Dyna Events, included live performances by Proyecto Uno, Oro Solido, Jimmy El Leon, El Che Lopez, DJ Willy, DJ Loka. Additionally, Brazil Samba Dancers & Rhythm Beaters “Batucada”, Nicaraguan, Colombian, and Venezuelan dancers and a band took the stage. “Congratulations City of Miramar! This was amazing event. I was impressed with the manner in which it was organized and carried out. Great selection of entertainment all around. Kudos to all involved. Thank you, Mayor,” added Miramar resident Monica Alvarado.

ational Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the contributions made by members of the Hispanic and Latino American communities and commemorates the significance of their presence in the United States. Generations of these individuals have positively influenced and enriched the nation and our society, and annual festivities throughout the country celebrated their heritage and culture including the City of Miramar. The City commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater. The free event was attended by 2,500 people who shared and embraced their heritages with Latin cuisine, arts & crafts, dance, plenty of music, and so much more. The celebration begins each year on September 15th which is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this time. Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race is who the term Hispanic or Latino refers. “The City of Miramar recognizes the contributions and vital presence of both Hispanic

INSPIRING INDIVIDUALS
It’s Easy Being Green at the Miramar Community Garden BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
nly an iconic frog may say, “It’s not easy being green”, but these two individuals who share a passion for botany, the environment, and the community find it rather easy. However, the irony is that these two garden lovers didn’t know each other until they were introduced at the Miramar Community Garden. It was a natural pairing for Karen M., a retired Broward County Middle School teacher who taught Hydroponics as an elective, and Malia Vega from Garden of Water who currently is a garden member. The two were brought together when Karen wanted to donate
a hydroponic system she built at her home. The 11-tower system produced so much volume, but with other endeavors going on, the savvy educator wanted to find another home to take care of her creation. “The City of Miramar’s Community Garden seemed to be a perfect match. There are enough basic supplies to run a 20+ tower hydroponic system. A farm area already exists on the property, so the community members are familiar with farm to table produce. This hydroponic system, when fully functioning, will provide an abundance of vegetables and herbs that will please anyone’s palate” exclaimed Karen.
Miramar Garden member Malia Vega was always fascinated by how a tiny seed can grow into something so large and beautiful. She also cares about sustainability and protecting our planet. The self-taught environmentalist will take care of the donation and teach others about hydroponic farming at Miramar’s award-winning micro-urban farm. A hydroponic garden is eco-friendly as water in hydroponics can be recycled and will only use 10% of the water of a normal farm as well as only 25% of fertilizer. Crops can grow in urban spaces reducing transport emissions and making fresh produce more accessible to those living in big cities. Additionally, little pesticide is required and hydroponic systems can grow vertically or stacked making space more efficient than traditional farming. These are just a few of the very many benefits. “Plants provide the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, the medicine that heals us, we must protect our most important resource that is necessary to sustain the life we live for future generations to come. I love the sciences and

conducting experiments. I’m currently running some scientific experiments for some companies that provide LED Grow Lights for consumers considering Indoor Gardening or for Greenhouse production,” stated Vega. “I feel great about my donation and look forward to continuing my involvement with the City of Miramar and the community members who will be utilizing the system and enjoying the fruits of their labor,” added Karen.

t’s not too often that a four-year-old visits the Miramar Community Garden to make a donation. However, Liam Dunne, a preschooler with a passion for saving seeds and caring for them until they become strong beautiful plants made a special delivery. The budding farmer was looking to expand his collection to an appropriate and larger location. Fortunately, his parents found the garden which welcomed his donations with open arms. Not only does this little guy save seeds from the family’s storebought produce, he knows how to grow his own food. At his young age he is already a great steward of the environment by finding creative ways to upcycle yogurt cups, soda bottles, recyclable drinking cups
and milk bottle plant tags by transforming them into useful plant accessories. Liam became passionate about gardening after watching “Project Diaries”. He was inquisitive, and after reading books and watching videos he began creating his own home garden. His mother recalls the first thing he grew was a mini sweet pepper plant from seeds saved from his lunch. “He used a popsicle stick to pick the seeds out of the inside if the top of the pepper, put them onto a paper plate, dried them in the sun, then planted them in soil.” Liam’s parents have been extremely supportive of his hobby by helping him bring plants close to house when it’s storming outside, buying soil and food that seeds come from, and showing videos on YouTube to teach him how and what to grow in Florida. They additionally help him make plant tags out of water bottle plastic. The homeschooled toddler sorts by size, counts, creates labels telling how many of each size there are, and bags them for future use which makes the fun activity educational as well. “I like plants because they are living things. They drink water and use sunlight and soil. We don’t use sunlight or soil. There are so many cool types of plants…pumpkin, avocado, puffy sunflower, and carrot,” exclaimed Liam. When asked if he could grow any plant in the world what would it be, the
excited pint-sized farmer said, “A pumpkin because they are cool.” “Garden members were delighted to receive a donation of mini sweet peppers, beans, grape tomatoes, navel orange and lemon seedlings. Most of all, garden members treasured his enthusiasm for caring for the environment,” stated Elsi Rose, Development & Capital Management Coordinator. “Seeing young Liam take a seed and help it grow was beautiful to watch, and in a way, it was like a seed inside him was germinating as well, the seed of discovery and the joy of learning.”
Local Girl Scout is One Smart Cookie BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
hile attending Miramar’s Disco Soup event where the community came together to promote awareness about reducing food waste and celebrating locally grown food, Jessica Goltz, a girl scout from Troop 10507 made some observations at the Miramar Community Garden. Besides “chopping to the beat” and transforming veggies into delicious meals, she noticed that the microurban farm could use more seating and storage. The thought was the perfect idea for her to earn the prestigious “Leadership Journey Challenge Badge”. This badge is designed to introduce girl scouts to unique leadership and advocacy challenges which allow them to discover the meaning of making a difference in the community. The challenge requires scouts to identify a problem, develop a creative solution, create a team, put the plan into action, and discuss what was learned and next steps. “I chose to do this journey because Girl Scouts is 20 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
something I’ve been doing for ten years of my life and I wanted to help my community,” exclaimed the ambitious ninth grader. After communicating with City of Miramar representatives and meeting with garden members, Jessica recognized what was needed and went right to work. The perfect project to achieve this badge would be placing a bench to allow members a place to rest and to provide accessible storage. To do this, a strategic fundraiser was needed to raise the funds to purchase a tasteful all-weather patio bench with storage. Jessica gathered a team of thirteen people in addition to her supportive family and eager garden members to help her achieve her goal. She planned a fundraiser at a local Chipotle Mexican Grill which was a success allowing her to purchase a bench made of resin plastic with UV-protection ensuring a maintenance-free performance. The bench also features dual-purpose storage with a ventilated deck-box underneath the contoured seat to neatly
stow away gardening tools. “When Jessica started she was so determined, and she stayed that way till the end, and even when she thought it was all over she kept going until she found a way to finish,” stated her sister Lily Mae. “I’m looking into being a teacher preferably a music teacher, and this experience has only pushed me to work to achieve that. I had to be in charge, do my research, meet with people and learn how to think about all the sides I dealt with which will help me be a teacher,” added Jessica.

hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...
Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? Do I really need one? 22 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

The saying, "too many cooks in the kitchen" is the result when this occurs. An important detail in the planning process is to be particular about the source you may get a referral from. What's good for one, may in fact, not be good for another. Word of mouth is one of the best assets available, as it's good to hear a great review like going to a movie or a restaurant. Unfortunately, one must remember that there are other factors to consider such as individual tastes and budgets. Contracts, pricing and other factors also vary per event. One

One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. When hiring, keep in mind that you are entering a relationship of sorts, so you want to like who you are hiring. "Personality over price" is usually the way to go. At some point in the planning process, you will be spending much time with these individuals. You should "click" with your photographer, "jive" with your emcee/band and of course, "love" your wedding planner. n If you are planning an event, have questions, or want more information on event planning please email editorhollywood@ ourcitymedia.com or call 954-732-5155.

Miramar High School Students are Soaring into Their Future BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he first program of its kind just took off, literally, for Miramar High School students in grades 10-12. These students get to experience the first career dual enrollment program at the Emil Buehler Aviation Institute on the Judson A. Samuels South Campus in Pembroke Pines through Broward College. Thirty-nine teens are currently participating with an astonishing thirty percent of the group being female. The first of its kind in Broward County, the high schoolers enrolled in the Broward College Postsecondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) Aviation Maintenance program will complete one Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificate, either Airframe or Powerplant, by the time they graduate Miramar High School. The participating students can then continue their education at Broward College to complete their Associate of Science (AS) degree in Aviation Maintenance Management and have the future opportunity to obtain their Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Science by 2024. “Broward College is committed to offering programs like this that will benefit students’ education and the future of our community,” said Broward College
President Gregory Haile. “Thanks to our strong relationship with Broward County Public Schools, these students will have the opportunity to become initial leaders in the aviation industry which is one of the fastest growing industries in the region.” The students recently gained real-world experience working on a Cessna 402 Businessliner, twin-engine piston aircraft donated by Wayman Aviation. This brings the total number of aircraft at Broward College’s Emil Buehler Aviation Institute to eight, more than the national average for aviation schools. The Cessna 402, valued at nearly $150,000, is considered a workhorse of the Caribbean. It’s one of the most popular piston charter aircraft in the industry, which means students will be able to easily apply their knowledge to jobs in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. The Cessna is located in the hangar adjacent to the high school classroom and will be instrumental in students completing the general requirements of their FAA Airframe and Powerplant certifications. “This program is a great opportunity for me. A lot of students speak about being a pilot and flying. I want
to know what gets the plane in the air,” said senior Miramar High School student Kiara Shannon. “My family is so proud of me. I come from a family of mechanics, but none of them are aviation mechanics. I find it very exciting. It’s not only a man’s job!” “This is an interest-based program. It’s important to look at what might hold a student back from going to college. If the students like what they are doing they will be successful,” added Sean Gallagan, Associate Dean, Transportation Programs at Broward College.

ally recognized scholar. “American Heritage has taught me you can be a big fish in a big pond, and you can get ahead and learn so much,” said AHS senior Eric Bazail. “The rigor that is expected of us, the collaborative aspect in all my classes and the incredible resources available at Heritage have helped me become much more knowledgeable and a better student.” The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT in their respective states. About half of the Semifinalists go on to win
scholarships. The NMSC will choose the winners of the $2,500 scholarships from the pool of finalists in the spring. Eleven of the Semifinalists are residents of Miramar, including: • Makenna Boose • Sebastian Gracia • Paridhi Kapadia • Trishala Kumar • Andrew Ma • Samara Miller • Ephraim Oyetunji • Joseph Poon • Shirley Wong • Darius Corbie • Atul Iyer American Heritage High School Principal, Elise Blum, commented, “It is quite an accomplishment to be among the top 1% of high school students in the entire nation, and I hope this recognition empowers them to keep exceeding the potential in college and in their future careers.” For more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program visit www.nationalmerit.org. Does Your Child Have Growing Pains Or Are They Just Flatfooted? BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot, ankle and leg problems in a growing child are also considered to be growing pains in the bones and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems including flat feet. Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside while walking or running are the primary causes. Many of these children are also knockkneed. They can also have tight muscles, especially the calf muscles, hamstrings and hips. Signs and symptoms include leg pain, especially at night. There is pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg bone, ankle and foot including the arch. They often have pre-
mature fatigue with activity and they avoid activities and sports. Lower back pain may also be felt. It is important for these kids to avoid going barefooted. Changing shoes to get more support will certainly help as will having an insole or a custom molded orthotic made to realign the foot and ankle. In most cases this will eliminate the pain overnight. Many of these kids have flat feet and tight calf muscles. In those cases, we stretch the calf muscles before we make an orthotic to give the calf muscle flexibility and the ankle better movement. When an orthotic is made the children are back to playing all sports and activities at a much higher level than before. The prognosis is almost always excellent. Sunshine Elementary Students Get Down to Business BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust last month, Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne had the privilege of visiting Junior Achievement (JA) Biz Town at JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion in Coconut Creek with fifth grade students from Miramar’s Sunshine Elementary. Junior Achievement of South Florida is an organization which develops the business and financial acumen of students in fifth through eighth grades from Broward and South Palm Beach County schools through real-life simulation. The world-class facility prepares today’s youth for tomorrow’s careers by introducing and teaching them essential skills in certain areas such as banking, business, retail, government, and more. Students had the opportunity to participate in a series of sixteen classroom lessons such as how to apply for a job, interview for a job, write checks, and vote. They were then able to apply their newly-learned knowledge at JA Biz Town where they operated a simulated economy, ran a business and even ran for election. This hands-on experience of being citizens, consumers, employees, and business owners empowers and prepares them for their own eco-
nomic success. Vice Mayor Colbourne had the opportunity to meet and shake hands with young Mayor Charles of JA BizTown. She also met some of the students, parents and teachers who volunteer in the program, and had an opportunity to speak to the students about the importance of learning the basic skills of entrepreneurship. “I was fascinated by the concept of the program and impressed with the way the students performed their professional roles,” stated Vice Mayor Colbourne. A visit to JA Biz Town is always a highlight for students as they prepare for the anticipated field trip by dressing for the part in business attire. Although,
the young entrepreneurs are having hands-on fun, they are listening, brainstorming, showing responsibility, applying critical thinking skills and critical information, following directions, problem solving, plus learning customer service skills, and so much more. Students get to work in private storefronts that resemble the actual ones since many local businesses are sponsors of the facility to bring the town to life. “JA of South Florida helps young people connect with relevant learning and the importance of staying in school. Junior Achievement sparks students to develop competitive skills and confidence.” – Junior Achievement of South Florida.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
State of the City Address BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR Every year I have the privilege to present the State of the City to our residents and business community. It’s a tradition I began when I was elected mayor in 2015. Years prior, a status of the city was only presented to our local Chamber of Commerce and I felt that the entire city should also know of our progress. This year’s State of the City Address will be held at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater on November 1st from 6:30-8:00 pm. We are excited to have our city staff, residents, Miramar local business owners, students and many community organizations attend. Find out why Miramar is the 15th fastest growing economy in the nation and the many accomplishments of our city departments, residents and business community. Learn about upcoming initiatives by each Miramar City Commissioner and get updates on the many capital projects under construction. This year’s address will feature success stories in economic development, shed light on our business climate, updates on resident services and highlight our opportunities and the future of Miramar. It is without question that Miramar remains on fire. Our population has grown to 142,000 residents and our economy remains one of the fastest growing in America with continued addition of high paying jobs. Companies like United Data Technologies and 3Z have just built their respective headquarters in our city with salaries averaging $80,000. This year’s budget includes the addition of more police officers and the construction of our Historic/ East Miramar new Police sub-station to assist in keeping our city safe. As I reflect on our progress, I am just as excited to announce that the city commission and administration is preparing the foundation for the next twenty years and beyond. In order to continue our momentum, we cannot rest on our laurels. We must continue to make the bold moves today that will secure our competitive advantage in the future. Please stay tuned as we launch #Miramar2040. This initiative will develop the priorities for Miramar and we will rely on our residents and community stakeholders to set the course for our future. Did you know our city is planning for 5G, autonomous vehicles, establishing a Sense of Place by creating Innovation, Arts/Entertainment and other Districts? Once completed, Miramar will be well-positioned to be full-service city while still maintaining a hometown feel. To keep informed about these developments, contact my office by email and we will ensure you are notified. Emails can be sent to elaroche@miramarfl.gov. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Estate Planning Is A Team Sport BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE nvesting online at E-Trade or using Turbo Tax in lieu of a CPA for their tax returns, they believe they are saving time and not “wasting” money. Purchase insurance or an IRA without an agent? Easy to do. And through extensive marketing of sites such as Legal Zoom, you can now download a will, trust, and advance legal directives. Why hire someone when you can do it by yourself, for less? As inexpensive and efficient as these sources can be, they all lack a very important element: counseling. Estate planning and decisions regarding taxes, investments, insurance and disability are daunting and complex. Knowing what you don’t know is critical. One way to keep you on track as your world changes is to build a “team” of professionals who can offer real financial and legal counseling.
I
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
Who are the members of your team and how do you choose them? Your team members may be a CPA, financial planner, attorney, banker, stockbroker and perhaps an insurance advisor. The first step in selecting a professional may be a recommendation by a friend, colleague or an existing member of your team. No matter who may refer you, it is important to do your own independent research. Schedule a consultation. Ask questions. Check qualifications. There is never a substitute for experience and competence, but also consider if this is someone you feel comfortable with. Your goal is a long-term relationship. When it comes to estate planning, a qualified estate planning attorney offers more than simply producing documents for your signature. Their value is in the counsel provided. While you can save money in the short term using an online service, or even an attorney who dabbles in estate planning, your heirs may be left to clean up mistakes that may have been made. Is that a risk you are willing to take?
Are there any other factors you should consider?

One issue currently getting a lot of attention is the term “financial advisor,” commonly used by stockbrokers, insurance agents or someone who sells mutual funds or annuities. Actually, anyone can add that title to their name, and it does not make them an expert. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP), however, is a positive indicator that you will be provided with objective financial guidance. But even those with the CFP designation may not be a good fit for you. Do your research. A basic rule of estate planning is thinking about how your loved ones will handle their financial affairs after you are gone. Consider leaving behind a team to provide consistent, reliable and supportive counsel and advice to you now, and then to assist and guide your loved ones later. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Tips for Keeping Your Children Safe on Social Media BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS he Miramar Police Department recommends you speak with your kids about using social media responsibly. While there are benefits to growing up with this technology, there are risks as well. Educate Yourself: Children today are more social media savvy than ever. Although you may not be tech savvy yourself, take the time to familiarize yourself with the numerous sites and apps to understand the risks. Discuss Expectations, Usage and Social Media Boundaries with Your Kids: ▸▸ Have open lines of communication with your kids about social media. Explain to them how social media is used for good and bad and how they must be aware of their behavior and the behavior of others while online. Posting threats of violence is not a “joke.” Those posting threats will be investigated thoroughly and may be subject to arrest. ▸▸ Discuss cyberbullying - the posting or sharing of negative, harmful, or false, content about someone else. Some cyberbullying can cross the line into criminal behavior. Advise your children not to engage in this and to report any bullying immediately to you. ▸▸ Speak to them about what a digital footprint is and how inappropriate messages or images could impact them in the future. Know Their Account(s): ▸▸ Know which social media platforms your children use. They may have several - Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Most social networks require users to be 13 years old or older. However, users can easily misrepresent their age. ▸▸ You should have access to ALL of your children’s accounts. ▸▸ Remember mobile devices, like cell phones and tablets, let children access social media sites away from adult supervision. Know your Kid’s Privacy/Account Settings: This is where you can control who has access to your children’s information. ▸▸ You may want to create the accounts with/for your kids to ensure they are set-up correctly. Private information, such as the school they attend, should not be listed on their profile. ▸▸ Review app settings to help them keep information, like their current location, private. ▸▸ Ensure that their page is not open to the public. Know what your child is posting: A provocative, offensive or overly personal post can attract the wrong people. Who are your children communicating with? Your children’s online contact lists and followers may include people you don’t know, or even people your child only knows online. ▸▸ Randomly check your children’s friend list or followers. ▸▸ Adults send friend/follow requests to children every day. They also pose as children. Speak with your kids about not communicating online with individuals they don’t actually know. ▸▸ Check your children’s direct messaging (private conversations message board). Where to report? If anyone talks to your child about sex, shares or asks them to share sexual images, or if your child is a victim of sexual exploitation, contact your local police department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at www. CyberTipline.com or 1-800-THE-LOST.

Miramar residents and those in the business community were able to hang out and chat over a “Cup of Joe” with Miramar’s best in blue at McDonald’s and Vicky Bakery during the third annual National Coffee with a Cop Day last month. The event promotes open communication between the community and city officials. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | NOVEMBER 2018 33
