HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I

NOW OPEN

t is hard to reflect on the past year without a bit of shock and awe. The year began with Democratic Party presidential candidates debating which health plan is better, while South Florida hosted the NFL’s Super Bowl. The year’s final month will be our ninth consecutive enduring a pandemic. There is uncertainty if the NCAA’s football championship, planned to be played in the same stadium as the Super Bowl, will even allow spectators. To say it has been quite a year is an understatement. More than 250,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 related illnesses, including more than 17,000 Floridians. We have continued a troubling trend away from ideological politics toward conflict-infused, identity politics. As of this writing, firefighters on the west coast continue to battle massive wildfires; COVID-19 infections continue to increase. We mourn the loss of some of America’s most impactful people, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, basketballer Kobe Bryant, actor Chadwick Boseman, singer Kenny Rogers, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek and Miami’s own, Don Shula. Amidst all of this doom and gloom, however, it’s helpful to look forward. Several pharmaceutical companies from across the globe are in the final stages of vaccine clinical trials. New platforms like TicToc have enabled young, creative people access to an audience like never before, and progress to stem the effects of climate change is finally being made. So, this New Year’s Eve, raise a glass of champagne, to the year that was, but to the year that will be. Here is to a better 2021!

Miramar Resident Receives The Children's Trust David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award

M

iramar resident Morris Copeland, Director of the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department (JSD) is the recipient of The Children’s Trust 2020 David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award. This award is given to an individual for a lifetime of notable achievement and dedication to children that displays a depth of commitment to children’s causes that have resulted in lasting impact. For Director Copeland, this award represents coming full circle for him from his early beginnings in Liberty City. Copeland grew up in Liberty City and was thrown into the role of caregiver at 8 years old when his father became disabled. Although his mother provided as a kindergarten teacher, he quickly stepped into a role of caring for his three sisters. When he was 13, Copeland admittedly found himself on the wrong side of quite a few situations in life and even had a gun pointed at his head. Escaping that situation was a pivotal turning point in his life, and from there he pushed to do better for not only his family, but himself.

Copeland played football at Miami Edison High School and was recruited to the University of Colorado, Boulder. While in college, he delved into cultural and social issues and made a decision to dedicate his professional career to helping at-risk juveniles find the right path, especially those who are one step away from losing their lives or not having a productive life. During his nine-year tenure as Director of MiamiDade County Juvenile Services, the county saw a 62% reduction in juvenile arrests and a 39% reduction in arrests of children 12 and under. Copelands has developed and implemented a number of innovative and humane juvenile justice strategies to help at-risk children and families served by the JSD. In fact, more than 25,000 nonviolent juvenile offenders in Miami-Dade County have gotten a second chance under his leadership. Director Copeland exemplifies a South Florida success story—and receiving The Children’s Trust 2020 David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award is a testament to all he has achieved over the course of his life. Miramar is lucky to have this inspiring individual as a resident.

Annual “Cool Gear for the School Year” Initiative

F

ive middle schoolers who call Children’s Harbor home were selected to participate in the Jason Taylor Foundation’s annual “Cool Gear for the School Year” initiative, a unique “back to school’’ shopping experience for 60 under-served children from Broward and MiamiDade counties. The goal of “Cool Gear for the School Year” is to help children find the confidence they need to start the

new school year without distractions. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the foster care youth were given a $300 gift card to shop over Zoom and pick up clothes, backpacks and lunch at a socially distanced drive-through. Miami Dolphins players, cheerleaders and local celebrities were on hand to pass out the items. “We could not be more grateful to the Jason Taylor Foundation for their generosity and support,” said

Tiffani Dhooge, President and CEO of Children’s Harbor. “Our kids really struggle with self-confidence and this experience has helped tremendously with that. It’s amazing to see the impact that something as simple as a few new outfits can have on a child’s self-esteem.” Children’s Harbor is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency with a mission to provide a safe harbor and support to at risk children, youth, and families, keeping brothers and sisters together, strengthening families and rebuilding lives. ■ For more information, visit: childrensharbor.org or call 954-252-3072.

About Children’s Harbor Children’s Harbor provides nurturing, family group homes for 24 siblings and 12 pregnant/parenting teens in the foster care system on our beautiful 8-acre campus in Pembroke Pines. in their young lives. Children’s Harbor also helps prevent child abuse through our Family Strengthening Program. Each year, 200 families across Broward County that are experiencing crisis work with family support counselors in their homes to help support, stabilize and prevent the breakdown of the family. The Independent Living teams provide housing, life skills and wrap around support to teens who are aging out of foster care to guide them towards selfsufficiency and independence. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? Not only will our ventilation system protect you from the toxic byproducts of shooting, but the HEPA filtration and laminar air flow are also superb at affording protection from the respiratory droplets of COVID-19. The air pumped into the range is actually cleaner than the air outside, so shooting with us is actually one of the safer activities you can enjoy during the pandemic. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology.

Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. POSITIVE PARENTING

Holiday Stress? Get Your Family Through in a Breeze By Molly Brousseau

T

he holidays are here and that brings happiness, cheer, and increased family stress. This year in particular may be extra hard on families as they plan their socially distant holiday parties and buying gifts on a tight budget. Here are a few tips on how to skate through this holiday season without losing the little sanity we may have left! First, get rid of expectations and try to relax. Children mimic the behaviors and the attitudes of their parents, so modeling to your children how we

handle stressful situations is particularly important during these times. Psychology Today mentions creating “happy moments to help prevent the increase in negative behaviors. This can be done by simply spending 5 minutes of “special time with your child, doing something they love, and giving lots of positive attention. Make sure to talk to your children about new rules or changes in their normal routine before they encounter new situations. Open conversations help ease transitions and reduce stress for the whole family. It is important to be flexible, especially during these uncertain times, things change, so make sure to have a plan B. Take the focus off of gift-giving. Now is a great time to teach your children the importance of giving gifts during the holidays. Whether it’s making something for a children’s hospital, or writing cards for the elderly, many organizations are available to help give to the less fortunate during the holiday season.

Handmade gifts are a great alternative to storebought and can also be a great teaching tool. Having a child think up and plan a gift helps with creativity and imagination. Taking your child to the craft store and letting them pick out the materials gives them their own sense of independence. Great ideas for homemade gifts include hand-painted tote bags, oven mitts, or decorated picture frames with a family picture inside. Baking around the holidays is another great way to bring the family together and can also double as a fun and easy gift. Start a new tradition of baking cookies or creating hot cocoa kits to give to loved ones or service providers (our amazon workers need treats toođ&#x;˜Š). Managing stress during the holidays can be a difficult task but remember to take a deep breath and be grateful for the time spent with our family and loved ones. â– Molly Brousseau a first time mom and an educator with over 14 years of experience working with young children. Harbor for the Holidays By Beverly Perkins

F

or the past nine years, Children’s Harbor supporters, known as “Harbor Keepers”, from around the nation have gathered in December to enjoy the annual Winterfest Boat Parade and celebrate a year of their accomplishments for the nationally accredited nonprofit agency. Although 2020 did not allow for such grand achievements, the organization is always grateful to all their advocates. “Children’s Harbor has been significantly impacted by COVID-19. During the last nine months, we have accrued more than $100,000 in unbudgeted expenses that are directly related to the pandemic and anticipate a total loss of $250,000 by end of year. We have been entirely dependent upon private support to help us reconcile this loss. We would have never been able to navigate through this storm without the support of this community,” explained Tiffani Dhooge, Children’s Harbor president and CEO. Despite this news, Dhooge and her team thought everyone could still enjoy a little holiday spirit. Therefore, Children’s Harbor is kicking off December with “Holidays with the Harbor”. The weeklong virtual holiday experience will provide festive activities for everyone who needs a little holiday cheer. These family-friendly events will include prominent local personalities and businesses who support the Pembroke Pines facility which provides a safe harbor and support to at risk children, youth, and families-keeping brothers and sisters together, strengthening families, and guiding youth towards independence. “The pandemic has definitely affected everyone’s lives, but all of us at Dalsimer Atlas Floral & Event Decorators want everyone to

celebrate life every day,” exclaimed David Dalsimer, Co-owner of the renowned South Florida floral and decor company. “For over 100 years, our family has been celebrating all of life’s moments and we certainly are not stopping now. We will demonstrate how to make simple centerpieces that are easy and fun to create while celebrating the season and most importantly, a great cause.”

The schedule of FREE events includes: December 3 – Virtual Gingerbread House Workshop Join Children’s Harbor and Local 10 news anchor Eric Yutzy virtually for the ultimate family-friendly holiday event with tips and tricks on how to build the perfect gingerbread house. Additionally, participants can submit a photo of their gingerbread house for a chance to win $500. *The cost to submit is $20. December 8 – Virtual Holiday Cooking Party Children’s Harbor is hosting a virtual holiday cooking party with Shooters Waterfront. Led by Shooters' Culinary Director James Cawley, participants will learn how to make delicious appetizers and cocktails for their upcoming COVID-friendly holiday parties. The list of ingredients to follow along will be sent to registered participants. December 10 – Virtual Holiday Centerpiece Creations Workshop Children’s Harbor, in partnership with the esteemed Dalsimer Atlas Floral & Event Decorators, will be virtually hosting an interactive centerpiece creations workshop. Led by expert designer David Dalsimer, participants will learn the ins and outs of making the perfect centerpiece. December 12 – Virtual Winterfest Viewing Party “Holidays with the Harbor” will culminate with Children’s Harbor’s 9th Annual Winterfest Boat Parade virtual viewing party. Beginning at 5:30pm with opening remarks by Children’s Harbor CEO Tiffani Dhooge, the event will provide a social gathering to kick off the “Best of the Parades” special on WSVN. The winner of the gingerbread house decorating contest will be announced and guests will have the opportunity to participate in the “Holiday Jam After Party” with Mike Sipe Entertainment. “COVID can’t stop good and we are making sure of that this holiday season,” added Dhooge.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Pembroke Pines Update By Frank C. Ortis, Mayor OF PEMBROKE PINES

D

ear Reader: As the year draws to an end, many of us will be glad to see it go. While it has been challenging, much good has also come to fruition. We have come to appreciate family, a simpler life and to realize our strength and determination to forge ahead. Our first responders, frontline workers, volunteers and essential works have become our heroes. I am pleased to have been once again re-elected as your mayor and will continue to provide only the best for all residents of our great city. I am also excited that I finally mastered ZOOM calls and that virtual Commission Meetings will no longer be needed, or at least at the time of this writing. You have been patient with these challenges and understanding when difficult decisions had to be made and for that I thank you. As we head into the holiday season, please remember to continue to be safe. Remember that shopping presents unique dangers outside of a pandemic situation, which is why taking a few preventative measures can help keep the holiday season joyous. In addition to wearing your mask and practicing social distancing, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and following safety tips that include staying alert as you walk to and from your car, not leaving personal items in your car, and parking near well-lit areas. More tips can be found on our city website at www.ppines.com, in City Connect, and our social media. A quick reminder for those interested in attending our Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. Starting next month on January 10, 2021 through March 10, 2021, Florida residents are invited to enroll their child(ren) into the 2021-2022 school year lottery for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System (PPCSS). Waitlisted students are required to re-submit their online application to remain on the waitlist. In addition, parents of currently enrolled PPCSS students are required to re-enroll via a link provided online. You can find the links and more information at http://www.pinescharterapply.net On a “housekeeping” note, please note the following 2020 holiday schedule for garbage, recycling and trash service for the City of Pembroke Pines. Residents will not receive garbage, recycling and bulk service on Friday, December 25, 2020 (Christmas Day). Those residents who do not receive service on Christmas Day should place garbage and recycling out for pick up on the resident’s next regularly scheduled pick up day. Residents who do not receive bulk service on Christmas Day have been rescheduled for Tuesday, December 29, 2020. There will be no change to the garbage, recycling and bulk schedule for the New Year’s holiday (January 1, 2021). If you have questions, please call the City of Pembroke Pines Public Services Department at 954-518-9000. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season for all of you, with a happy and prosperous New Year! ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year, is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule. Last minute issues will usually not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any such concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any timesharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day”. As an example, in odd numbered years such as 2015 perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Oftentimes the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF: MIRAMAR

“Shop with a Cop” By Police Chief Dexter Williams

S

hop with a Cop is a yearly anticipated event the Miramar Police Department has been coordinating for 24 years. The police department partners with Walmart to sponsor local families and children to shop with a police officer for the holidays. This event allows parents, children, and officers to take a break from their busy lives and spread a little holiday joy. Don’t be surprised if you are in Walmart and see an officer racing a child down the aisle

in the toy department. Children are chosen based on the family’s current situation, life event or financial need. “As a school resource officer you develop a relationship with the students and families. Some parents and kids feel comfortable speaking with you about their personal struggles and issues, so you realize how much this event means to them. For some families Christmas would not be possible if it wasn’t for Shop with a Cop,” said School Resource Officer Tiffany Roy. A few students are chosen from each elementary school in Miramar prior to the day of the event. A letter is sent home, explaining their child has been invited to participate in Shop with a Cop. “Every year the school resource officers are excited to help choose a child to shop with. It brings smiles to their faces during the holiday season,” Officer Scott Hadley said. On the day of the event, Walmart hands out snacks while the families are given check out instructions. The students are then given a set amount to shop with and a cart. Some children

sprint straight to the toy section, while others come prepared with a list of family members to buy gifts for. Nothing compares to the excitement and happiness expressed by these children. Now whether the child gets to play with their toys right away or they have to wrap them and place the gifts under the tree until Christmas is up to their guardians. The program also helps build positive relationships between law

enforcement officers and the children in our community. It shows there is more to being an officer than just making arrests and writing traffic tickets. “I work closely with a lot of these students and there are so many risk factors present that can undermine their social development and success. Shop with a Cop not only helps students build a positive relationship with law enforcement, but also provides some students with a dream of a lifetime,” said School Guidance Counselor Mark Fulton. Shop with a Cop provides a positive experience not only for the kids involved, but also for the officers.Everyone looks forward to getting gifts this time of the year, but these school resource officers look forward to spending their evening bringing a little bit of joy to families in our community.

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Youth Athletes By Dr. John Goodner

P

arents should encourage their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovascular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly advised that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries. In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however, the majority of these children outgrow these conditions without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping during activity. Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older

youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of long-term ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist, immediately, for better longterm prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle. Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immobilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years. Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. Commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in basketball because of the force from coming down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest,

immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy. Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury. The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and orthotics. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

D

espite the evidence that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological wellbeing, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated”. To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be

38 DECEMBER 2020 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue, those symptoms were reduced once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you

are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.
