Time for a Christmas Truce
D
ecember 24, 1914 was the date of one of the most improbable acts of collective goodwill and fellowship in history. German soldiers conspired with their British and French opponents to declare an informal ceasefire along the Western Front of World War One. After five months of the worst carrange in human history, rank and file soldiers declared what would later be called “The Christmas Truce.” The truce began when groups of soldiers sang Christmas Carols from their trenches. These carols were answered, in turn, by songs from the enemy. Soon, arrangements were made to recover bodies from the “no man’s land” between the opposing forces. This led to interactions between the forces, ending, believe it or not, with gift exchanges and even a soccer match. We often focus on the things that divide us in the modern world. Social media and political journalism highlight differences and frequently induce anger, jealousy, and rage. Next time you find yourself in a fit of anger or a divisive rant, think of the soldiers on the Western Front. Those poor souls, who’s life expectancies were measured in days, not years, found common ground with the very people who were trying to kill them. Maybe, this holiday season we can do the same.

Palace at Weston is OPEN!
O
pened in March 2021, residents of The Palace at Weston are treated like royalty. The five-star Senior Living Community features spacious, designer-appointed apartments and luxury resort-style amenities along with gourmet dining experiences and entertainment options that rival any cruise ship. The Palace offers three distinct buildings under one roof with Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care residences.
What exactly is The Palace at Weston? It is a luxury Senior Living Community offering residents a continuum of care with Independent, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, in three separate buildings; each has its own entrance, amenities, and staffing geared to the care level it offers. We invite interested individuals to visit the building as soon as possible to experience the elegance that is found at The Palace at Weston.
Tell us about the residences at The Palace at Weston. The Palace offers some of the most spacious and well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida. There are two fully furnished one- and two-bedroom model apartments to show someone what an actual residence will include. Each features a kitchen with granite countertops and a stainless-steel appliance package, California-style custom closets, and luxurious bathrooms. Most residences include a den for extra space as well as a balcony.
The apartments sound beautiful, but what else does The Palace at Weston offer residents? Ritz Carlton-style amenities and services are trademarks of The Palace Group and include an elegant dining room, state-ofthe-art fitness center, piano bar, theater, library, and computer center. A monthly fee includes entertainment and social activities, gourmet dining and wine, personal training, security, maintenance, transportation, house-keeping, and utilities, and satellite TV.
Please tell us more about the exciting entertainment options. Each day is like living aboard a luxurious cruise ship. Many senior communities offer happy hours once a week; our communities offer happy hours every day with live entertainment. But that’s only happy hour. There are activities that take place every day, from morning into night, planned by a full-time activity department. We want people to have a wealth of choices and new experiences, from belly dancing to learning to play the piano to adult education classes with the University of Miami OSHER. People want to enjoy high-end amenities and want to be challenged mentally and physically.
How has The Palace adjusted in this Covid-19 world? We are pleased to say that The Palace’s Senior Living Communities have weath-ered the Covid storm very well. To date, mostly all of our residents have been triplevaccinated as well as the vast majority of team members. Under the direction of our Chief Nursing Officer Marilyn Bustamante, The Palace continues to adhere to Covid-19 mitigation protocols, while pro-viding the socially engaging lifestyle that The Palace Communities are known for.
What else distinguishes The Palace? We bring over 40 years of Senior Living experience to what we do. Jacob and Helen Shaham, founders and owners of The Palace Group, are local residents who are passionately involved in the day-to-day operations of every one of their communities. The Palace at Weston is their tenth community.
What industry awards has The Palace Group earned? The Palace communities have received scores of notable awards and recognition including the National Association of Home
Builders’ prestigious BEST Senior Living and BEST Independent Living Community in the country. The Palace also has been recognized for four consecutive years by Gallup as one of the Most Exceptional Workplaces in the world. Furthermore, we seek the highest standards offered by the senior housing industry such as The Governor’s Gold Seal Award, CARF Accreditation, and Joint Commission Accreditation.
Anything else you want readers to know about The Palace at Weston? Please visit our brand new, magnificent community and see for yourself why you, or your loved one, should live at The Palace at Weston. We offer peace of mind for loved ones and carefree, vibrant lifestyle with some of the largest, well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida.

R
Home for the Holidays By Beverly Perkins
esidents of Pembroke Pines and Miramar can prepare for many festivities this month. Besides the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping and (this year) holiday parties, some great local events are also happening. Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis is hosting a few and everyone is invited. For the first time in many years, “First Fridays” will make a return to the Miramar Cultural Center Banquet Hall with their 21st anniversary reunion event on December 3rd. Found over two decades ago by Tyrone Robertson and Andrew Fuller, attendees will feature music by foundation DJs Gavin T. Mark starting at 9:00 pm. “We are excited to welcome our guest host Miramar Commissioner Alexandra Davis to join us on this special occasion. Since its inception in 2000, First Fridays has had the opportunity to work with very special individuals and business partners from within the community, we would like to say a special welcome to Commissioner Davis” states Tyrone Robertson, Director of First Fridays of Florida, LLC.
Next on the calendar on December 11th is “Community & Cops”. The Miramar Police Department along with the Miramar Fire Department will be in the Huntington area to share community resources that are available to the community. Residents can participate within the police and fire department in a volunteer capacity and can learn about employment opportunities. “I love Community and Cops event because it is an opportunity for kids to meet their Community Resource Officers who are in constant communication with their School Resource Officers,” stated Commissioner Davis. However, the most anticipated event is the “Annual Toy Drive” on December 16th. Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis is excited to once again be hosting this event in conjunction with Walgreens for the children of Miramar in the City Hall Town Center from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. “In 2020, the toy drive distributed over 200 gifts to Miramar children, and I look forward to bringing Christmas joy to the children again this

SCHOOL NEWS
BCPS School Choice Applications
Accepted Through February 1, 2022
S
chool-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 1.
School Choice By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students. Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by completing a School Choice Application during the application window. School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the
School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.
How To Apply There are three alternative options available for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 8. Parents will be notified if their child was selected on March 3, 2022. If selected, they must contact their child’s new school and enroll by March 11 or that seat will be vacated. If a child’s application was not awarded, parents can apply for another School Choice option or remain in that school’s applicant pool and register the child at his/her assigned school.

Dear Readers: Please take note of recycling and bulk services information for the City of Pembroke Pines. All residential waste and recycling programs remain the same now through January 1, 2022. Residents are asked to please continue to separate garbage and recycling in the appropriate carts as always. Beginning January 2, 2022, changes will occur for single-family residents. All residential trash and recycling materials will be collected by Waste Pro in the green trash cart – do no use the blue recycling cart – and sent to the Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy facility located on SR7/441 where it will be converted into electricity by incineration. By Florida statute, the incineration of refuse materials to make energy is considered recycling. Even though Waste Pro will not be collecting waste and/or recycling from the blue carts, the City is requesting that you keep your blue recycling carts for the time being – we will provide further information when the changes occur. These changes to the recycling and waste collection program DO NOT affect Condominium Residential Units (such as Century Village, Hollybrook, Park Place, Colony Point, etc.). You can find more information about the recycling transition on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. Regarding Bulk Services: The frequency of curbside bulk pick up will remain the same, which is twice a month. Residents can view the bulk pick-up schedule on the city’s website. Bulk waste is large discarded items that include, but are not limited to, white goods, toilets, pool heaters, bedding, furniture, and yard waste. Currently, residents are permitted to place an unlimited amount of bulk out for removal on monthly scheduled dates. Beginning January 1, 2022, the change that will occur involves the amount of bulk that may be placed curbside. It will be limited to 10 cubic yards. Please go to the city’s website for detailed information. Redistricting is also on-topic at the present time. Everyone is welcome to attend a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 7 pm in City Commission Chambers to share input on redistricting. Analysis was presented at the October 6th Commission Meeting. For more information, please visit the City’s website at www.ppines.com, click Resident Resources on the top of the web page and then click on Redistricting. Now for the fun – please join us for the City’s annual Snowfest on Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center located at 601 City Center Way. There’s no better way for the kids to cool off than to come play in 75 tons of snow. Snow flurries will be seen throughout the event, and the air also will be filled with the sounds of the holidays with over 300 singers and dancers on the holiday stage for all to enjoy. Santa and City officials will also need everyone’s help to light up the 35ft tree on the plaza for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6:30 pm. There will be free parking, free rides, and free activities. Tickets are required for the Snow Area and can be purchased in advance or on the day of the event. Concessions will also be available for purchase. For more info, please visit www.ppines.com/specialevents or call 954-392-2116. I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season, with a happy and prosperous New Year! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. December 2021 / OurCityMedia.com / 37

Happy Holidays! Happy Holidays! While the coronavirus makes it difficult to celebrate in person with family and friends this holiday season, it also makes it all the more important to express your gratitude to the ones you love. So whether it is around the dinner table or over zoom, share with your loved ones how grateful you are for their presence in your life. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season. Love,
