Hurricane Season is Here Again

mangosfestival 1st annual

017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.

It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. C

Sons of Serendip: The Story of How it All Came Together for “America’s Got Talent” BY HELEN PENLAND

S

ons of Serendip, known for getting their start on America’s Got Talent (AGT), entertained a captivated crowd at the Miramar Cultural Center on April 13th. However, not many know about each musician’s love for music or the background of how they actually came together as a group. Here are the stories behind the story. Members of the group all became interested in music at a young age. Micah Christian, lead vocalist, discovered his potential as a musician during his senior year of high school. He performed in an a cappella group, Hyannis Sound, for five summers in Cape Cod and graduated from Boston University in 2013. Kendall Ramseur, a composer, singer-songwriter, and cellist began playing the piano at age 7. He realized his instrument of choice was the cello at age 10 and received Master of Arts Degrees at Boston University and North Carolina School of the Arts, in Music Performance with a concentration in cello. Music became a passion for Mason Morton, harpist, very early in life. His talent became known to him with the help of his two harp mentors, one from the Atlanta Ballet and the other from the Boston

Symphony Orchestra, both principal harpists. He subsequently graduated from Boston University. Cordaro Rodriguez, pianist, began teaching himself piano at age 10. He also learned several other instruments in addition to music production. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 2012 from Boston University School of Law. He “serendipitously reconnected with his childhood friend, Kendall” at Boston University, then met his future bandmates, Micah and Mason.

The Beginning of Sons of Serendip All talent shows use scouts to look for entertainers to feature in their productions; America’s Got Talent’s scouts were looking for an a cappella group. In 2014, a scout approached Hyannis Sound, but because of their prior commitments, the group declined to audition. Later, the scout asked them to reach out to alumni, and Micah was the only one to respond. He called everyone in the present group and each one said yes. Taking a chance, he contacted the scout and sent a video of a couple songs rather than an a cappella video. Three weeks later the scout called asking for more music. The back and forth continued for about a month and the scout eventually asked them to audi-

tion for the judges. Even as a truly raw troupe, their instruments and styles complimented each other; practice hours were long and late because each held a regular job. But it all paid off, as they placed fourth on AGT. Now they are known for rearrangements of much-loved music and recreating songs with their unique style. As a member of Sons of Serendip, Micah said, “Our journey as a group has been an incredible blessing. There is nothing like traveling and sharing love and joy through music with your best friends.” Their next move is working on a new album to contain more original music, then another two tours during October, November, and a Christmas tour of about 15 concerts. Rachel’s Challenge Presentations Stir Emotions in Audience BY HELEN PENLAND

iramar Fire Rescue held special presentations named Rachel’s Challenge, open to the public, on five occasions during April. There were morning and afternoon sessions on April 18th and April 19th and a special presentation for students on April 18th in the evening at City Hall. Except for the student event, all were held at Sunset Lakes Community Center in Miramar. Approximately 180 people attended the presentations. The message may not have been what attendees expected; it was one of compassion and personal growth. High school student Rachel Joy Scott was the first person to be shot and killed during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Rachel had a passionate outlook on life, favoring acceptance and compassion coupled with strong anti-bullying beliefs. Even at such a young age, her mission was to be sure all people are treated with kindness.

FEATURE STORY

Say Cheese! Sarpino’s Pizzeria Opens in Miramar BY BEVERLY PERKINS eventeen years ago, Sarpino’s Pizzeria opened. There are currently 50 restaurants nationwide, including Fort Lauderdale which opened four years ago. After receiving such a warm South Florida reception, the gourmet pizza restaurant has headed out to West Broward and is ready to deliver authentic Italian food to all Miramar residents. Sarpino’s Pizzeria is all about serving excellent food and exceptional experience to their customers. Everything is made on-site daily. From the fresh dough and the freshly chopped veggies, to the homemade pizza sauce, made with Californiagrown tomatoes mixed with their own spices. Each pie is then topped with a blend of mozzarella and Edam cheese imported from Wisconsin. The result is the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Sarpino’s unique combination is what sets them apart from other neighborhood restaurants. Although pizza may be what they are known for, they have a menu filled with other Italian specialties such as calzones, breadsticks, pasta selections, and so much more. Vasili Bykau, Sarpino’s Florida Franchisee, recently took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about the new establishment. What can diners expect when they visit the restaurant? Our passionate team strives for 100% customer satisfaction. Florida Vocational Institute Opens New Campus in Miramar: Education with Career-Focused Training BY HELEN PENLAND

F

lorida Vocational Institute (FVI) opened its second campus in Miramar in April as an extension of the Miami facility. The new campus is located at 3520 Enterprise Way which is easy access directly south of Miramar Parkway. The campus provides Broward County students access to education in both Information Technology and Healthcare, two of the most in-demand career opportunities. The institute is licensed by the State of Florida, Commission for Independent Education. It’s accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. FVI wanted to expand from Miami and after much research, Miramar was chosen as the best option. Although the school has already had its soft opening, they are having their grand opening on Saturday, May 19th with a Family Fun Day. Not only will there be free food, carnival games, and a DJ, people will have the chance to ask questions and learn about the programs offered at Florida Vocational Institute. They have helped thousands begin new careers in IT and Healthcare. Now, they’ll continue that work in the City of Miramar. “Florida Vocational Institute is committed to helping students who are seeking a career focused

“Violin Kids Play for Kids” Introduces Families to Classical Music BY DEBBY TEICH

O

n June 16, families will have an opportunity to introduce their children to the world of classical music during “Violin Kids Play for Kids.” Violinists from the Suzuki Music Academy will perform during a kidfriendly interactive program for children of all ages. The performance will take place at 2pm, at Southwest Regional Library Auditorium, 16835 Sheridan Street, in Pembroke Pines. Admission is free. During the concert, a group of 20 musicians, who range in age from 3 to 14, will play classical favorites by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. They will take the audience on a musical journey from the 18th century to the present with a program that includes interactive songs and musical games. “Wherever we play, parents, librarians, and teachers, are astonished by the enthusiastic receptions we get from children of all ages.” said Richard Coff, Academy Director. “Even toddlers and infants are remarkably engaged by and attentive to the performances by the children musicians in our ‘Violin Kids Play for Kids’ presentations! It seems that children tend to be most interested in seeing other kids who are able to demonstrate exceptional musical skill and poise.” For more than 30 years, the Suzuki Music Academy has been using the Suzuki Method, which is recognized by musicians and music educators as an effective way to provide formal classical music training to even the young-

est children. The children that train at the Academy meet for classes one or more days per week. They also work daily with practice and checkups at home. Nadine Louissaint’s two children – Isabelle, 15, and Dianne, 12 - have been playing the violin for six years. “The girls have learned that, with training and the commitment to practice, much can be accomplished,” said Louissaint. “They can now play beautifully and get real enjoyment when playing music and joining with other kids in concerts and for other events.” Larry and Marlene Suonare’s son, Lorenzo, 12, has been playing violin for nearly six years. “It’s been great to see Lorenzo’s progress from the time when he began study to the point where he is now,” said Larry Suonare. “He is able to play music by Brahms and Beethoven and many other classical composers. He really enjoys playing and seems to get a real feeling of accomplishment when learning new pieces and learning new and advanced violin techniques.” Winnie Irizarry’s son, Calvin, 5, has been playing violin for almost three years. “Calvin loves his violin,” said Irizarry. “He knows that playing the violin is something special that he can do and that not every 5-year-old can do. He likes playing for family and friends. Like the other kids in the program, he thinks it’s really great to play in concerts and for other children at the schools and libraries that the kids visit during the year.” For information, call 954-357-6733 or 954-797-7777.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Get a Real Taste of the Windy City in Pembroke Pines – CHICAGOS’S 312 BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

ho knew that one could enjoy a true Midwest dining experience right here in South Florida without getting on a plane? CHICAGO’S 312, located at the Grand Palms Hotel and Golf Resort, is a destination for families wanting a taste of the windy city. Named after the oldest area code in Chicago before it changed is a tribute to its original roots. Diners can expect the ultimate dining experience when they sample a variety of the City’s savory cuisine as if they were taking a tour through Chicago. Homemade generational recipes made with a twist of southern soul and plenty of love are all on the menu. Additionally, live jazz and blues

performances by local and legendary international musicians will have locals wondering if they actually left the “954”. Besides warm, unbelievable ambiance, delicious food, outstanding service, sophisticated style, and an “Old School” vibe, the master chef oversees

every detail of preparation and presentation to ensure that all five senses are delighted by each creation. The newly opened establishment has already received rave reviews from area residents. One exclaimed, “I would commit a crime for your cornbread!” Another expressed their love for the crab cakes, “These are the best crab cakes I’ve ever eaten!” It’s no wonder managing partners/owners, Robert Beatty and Ben Richmond, are excited to bring a gourmet-style Midwest menu to the community. Both recently took the time to answer some questions about their fine restaurant. Which specialty dishes are you most known for? We are known for so many, but our mouthwatering Gumbo, Slap your Mama Mac and Cheese, Out of This World Glazed Bread Pudding, Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, Handmade Lump Crab Cakes, Rosemary Corn Bread, Wood Grilled Salmon, Italian Roast Beef, and 20 oz steaks are already favorites. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Season of Change – Students Can Soar This Summer BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

W

NEW PATIENT SPECIAL Includes Exam, All X-Rays Needed & First Adjustment First adjustment on 2nd visit. Valid with ad only. Cannot be combined with other offers. Does not apply to Federal Plans, Workman’s Comp, Personal Injury or Auto Accidents. Expires 6/30/18

elcome to the first official month of Summer! It’s always a welcome change when we look forward to a new chapter within a new season. Our kids are out of school - some for a short time, others for an extended period. But, just because our kids are out of school does not mean they should not have outstanding opportunities for additional educational and professional development. One of the great benefits the City of Miramar presents to our youth is access to our growing business sector. I believe when we expose our youth to the business community, their horizons are broadened, and it can lead to the creation of new dreams and new aspirations of who they can become and even inspire career possibilities in their future. Therefore, the Mayor’s office is once again offering “Mayor Messam’s Aviation Academy” and in addition, “Mayor Messam’s Summer Technology Boot Camp”. Because Miramar has a large aviation sector, the “Mayor Messam Aviation Academy” will provide hands-on experiences and cover topics such as how to become a pilot, an engineer, an air traffic controller, and/or a maintenance repair technician, plus the program will expose them to other exciting aviation careers. Aviation Camp will take place on Tuesday, July 24th for one hundred students. Thirty of the ambitious students will be selected to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of Miami International Airport. Another industry that is growing tremendously in Miramar is the technology sector which includes information technology, software development and cyber security. To expose our youth to these exciting opportunities, we will also host “Mayor Messam’s Summer Technology Boot Camp”, sponsored by TechLaunch@FVI and New Horizons Computer Learning Centers. This two-week camp will take place from July 30th through August 10th for twenty-four high school students. Both of these camps are free of charge and open to only Miramar residents with sign-up on Eventbrite.com. I hope your child is able to take advantage of these additional summer fun academic opportunities. Have a great summer. Yours in Service,

Wayne Messam Mayor

LEGALLY SPEAKING

No Estate Plan? You Are Not Alone. BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

Y

ou may be surprised to learn that 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of your property, the care and custody of your minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of your estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the state of Florida. So, in simpler terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the state will make all your decisions for you. Another surprising estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan revise or update their documents every 19 years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 1999 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not. Estate planning is often narrowly viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone.

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

Contact Us Today

954.885.0085 If you have minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, day care and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. If you have adult children, are you confident that your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Finally, do you own a small business? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you do have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? ASK THE EXPERT

Habitual Toe Walkers BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

A

t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, stretching at home may be of benefit. Usually casting the foot and leg is necessary to stretch out the tight muscle group. Casts may be applied every two weeks for four to eight weeks. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. Causes: ▸▸ Neurological disorders must always be ruled out. ▸▸ Tightness of the calf muscles. Signs: ▸▸ Inability to walk in a normal heel-toe gait. ▸▸ Persistently on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Pain in legs, especially at night. ▸▸ Feet pointing to the outside. ▸▸ Arch very flat. ▸▸ Arched lower back (hyperlordosis).

▸▸ Bouncing type gait or gait that appears abnormal. Symptoms: ▸▸ Pain in the legs especially during activity. ▸▸ Pain in the legs at night. ▸▸ Fatigue in the feet and legs with activity. Treatment: ▸▸ Thorough history and physical exam. Neurologic causes must be ruled out. ▸▸ Mild cases may require stretching exercises and night splints. ▸▸ Moderate cases require casting the leg to stretch the calf muscles. The cast is weightbearing and may be necessary for four to eight weeks. There is no pain involved. The child can resume almost all activities in the cast, including riding a bicycle and walking briskly. ▸▸ Following cast removal, splints at night may be needed. Casting the leg is especially important if the child is flat footed. If untreated, the arch will flatten, causing long-term foot, ankle, knee and back problems. ▸▸ Casting is almost always successful in the younger child if the degree of tightness is not severe. Failure to stretch the muscle group with casting the extremity may necessitate surgically lengthening the Achilles tendon or calf muscle. This is done by making three small incisions on the back of the leg, each about one-twelfth of an inch or a small cut in the gastroc aponeurosis. Casts are applied postoperatively for six weeks and night splinting for six to twelve months to maintain the correction. Doing this procedure may have a positive impact on these children for the rest of their life. They can avoid long-term problems with the extremities and back by having this procedure done properly. EYE CARE

Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and Eye Strain

Happy Father’s Day

BY MICHAEL CHESEN, OD

T

he American Optometric Association (AOA) reports that over 7 out of 10 of the Americans that work each day from a computer monitor (about 143 million people) suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye strain. Prolonged computer use can result in eye stress and effect typical vision processes in kids and adults. If you are working at a computer longer than 2 hours each day, it is likely that you will suffer symptoms of computer vision syndrome.

Signs of CVS Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome include vision difficulties such as dry eyes, blurred vision, inability to focus or double vision and pain such as headaches, back aches and heavy eyes. If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms, you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome.

What Are The Causes of Computer Induced Eye Fatigue? Eye fatigue from prolonged computer use is caused by the necessity for our visual processing pathways to adapt to processing text on a computer screen in a different way than they do for letters in print. While our eyes are used to focusing on printed material that contains solid black characters with sharp edges, they are less familiar with characters on a digital screen that lack the same degree of contrast and sharpness. Words on a screen are created by combinations of tiny dots of light (pixels), which are most luminous at the center and diminish in intensity toward the edges. Therefore it is harder for our eyes to focus on these images. Instead, our eyes reduce focus to the ‘’resting point of accommodation’’ or RPA. Our eyes involuntarily adjust to the RPA and then have to make a great effort to regain focus on the text. The continuous strain on the muscles of the eyes to focus results in the fatigue and eye strain that is sometimes present during and after use of a computer or digital device. CVS isn’t a matter of concern just for those who spend a lot of time on computers. Other electronic gadgets such as smart phones or tablets can cause similar conditions and in some cases even worse. Since mobile screens are often small, in addition to pixilated, the user often strains even more to focus on images.

Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Strain If you think that you might be at risk for CVS, you should make an appointment with an eye care professional sooner than later. At a computer vision exam, your eye care professional will perform tests to detect any particular vision problems that might worsen symptoms of computer eye strain. Depending on the results of these tests, your optometrist may prescribe prescription computer eyeglasses to reduce discomfort at your screen. An anti-reflective coating is highly recommended for computer glasses. An antireflective coating lessens glare that may interfere with your ability to focus on images on your screen.

Ergonomics for Computer Vision Syndrome Ergonomics, or changing your work environment to reduce strains in vision or posture, can help relieve some of the discomfort of computer vision syndrome. Proper lighting and frequent breaks will cause some relief. However, since ergonomics alone cannot resolve a visual problem, using ophthalmic computer eyeglasses is also necessary. If you think you are suffering from CVS or at risk of getting it, contact Dr. Chesen at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.
