espite the soaring temperatures and almost daily deluge of rain, summer is one of the best times to be in South Florida. The snowbirds have all flown home and now those of us who live here can enjoy endless miles of beautiful beaches, easy access to the region’s outstanding restaurants, and a chance to experience all the attractions our community has to offer. After all, there is a reason approximately 30 million tourists visit the tri-county area each year. Get in touch with nature with an airboat ride through the Everglades or charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Take your taste buds on a journey every Monday night at the Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood or sip and savor a cocktail while watching the sunset at one of the many beachfront bistros. Speaking of the beach, that’s a great place to beat the heat. Pack up the cooler with icy cold drinks and enjoy a day of sand and surf, just don’t forget the sunscreen. Water parks and indoor activity centers are another option for wholesome family fun. Whatever you choose to do this summer, enjoy yourself and stay safe. Remember it is hurricane season. Make sure you have your emergency supplies ready, with at least a three-day supply of food and water for each member of your household.

COMMUNITY NEWS
The 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges was a Home Run BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Miramar Police and Fire Departments hit it out of the ball park when they raised approximately $2500 to support autism in the 2nd annual “Battle of the Badges” competition. The charity softball event was the creation of Joseph Drew, Community Resource Officer for the Miramar Police Department. Drew started this event because of his 4-year-old son Ayden who was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at the early age of 1 ½. The officer and his wife immediately became involved with Autism Speaks, a national advocacy organization which sponsors research, conducts awareness and outreach for families, governments, and the public. The Drew family wanted to do their part and they began participating in fundraiser walks and such to create awareness. “Being in law enforcement we come into contact with people on the spectrum all the time, and at the time there really was no required training for officers on how to deal with someone on the spectrum, or what to look for,” explained Drew. “I
took the first training course that was offered by Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), which later became required, and started teaching other officers in my department during our yearly in-service training. It was at that time I decided I wanted to do more which is how ‘Battle of the Badges’ came to be.” Drew had the support of Gina Hudson and the Miramar Fire Department when organizing the event which was instrumental to its success. In its first year they raised just under $3,000 for Autism Speaks. Approximately 150 people attended this year’s fundraiser at the Silver Lakes Sports Complex and they raised just about the same amount as last year. Besides raising the much-needed funds, families came out to enjoy the day while increasing awareness for autism. “Although the event is not about my son, it is definitely for him,” emphasized Drew. “The more awareness and education other officers and the general public can get, the better it will be for people on the spectrum.” To learn more about autism, please visit AutismSpeaks.org.

EYE CARE
UV Awareness Month Protect Your Eyes BY MICHAEL CHESEN, OD
T
he majority of Americans are aware of the dangers of Ultraviolet (UV) rays to your skin, (including sunburn and skin cancer) and the importance of applying UV blocking sunscreen and using other forms of sun protection when spending time in the sun. But how many are aware that ultraviolet rays and other harmful types of radiation from the sun are also a risk to your eyes? If you are thinking of leaving the house without proper eye protection, think about this: Extended exposure to harmful UV rays has been seen to be a cause of eye damage.
UV Eye Damage Exposure to large quantities of ultraviolet radiation over a short amount of time can cause a ‘’sunburn of the eye’’, which results in pain, blurred vision or even temporary blindness. Long-term ultraviolet exposure can result in more serious eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and others, all of which can cause vision loss. Just like the real sun, tanning beds pose a serious risk of overexposure to UV.

UV Eye Protection To shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV light. Look for sunglasses labeled ‘’UV 400’’, which indicates that they block all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers (which includes both UVA and UVB rays, both known to enter the atmosphere). You also want to choose sunglasses with full eye coverage. Sunglasses with side protection can block dangerous UV rays from coming in through the rear of the sunglasses. You don’t have to empty your pockets to have proper UV defense, but it’s essential to be certain the sunglasses give full UV defense. Many less-exclusive brands do offer proper UV coverage. Further, as well as keeping your eyes protected from the sun’s harmful rays, trendy sunglasses are at the height of fashion. Pick up a pair (or two) and let the sun shine down! For more information on UV protection, call Dr. Chesen’s Miramar optometric office at 954-4379733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

ASK THE EXPERT
Gait Disturbances in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
G
ait disturbances are one of the most common concerns of parents. Children may begin walking with their feet turned in or out, leaving parents with many questions. The problem may be coming from any level between the foot and hip. Some deformities occur at one level (i.e. foot, leg, knee, or hip), while others are more complex. Some children may “grow out of it”, while others will not. Newborns and infants are born with their legs bowed and the lower leg turned in relative to the upper leg (medial tibial torsion). This represents the fetal position of the lower limbs. With the beginning of walking the lower limbs start to straighten as normal physiologic development takes place.
Causes
OUR 3RD OFFICE IS NOW OPEN!
▸▸ Genetic: Rotational problems often run in families. When parents and siblings have grown out of it, the presenting child usually will as well. ▸▸ In utero position during pregnancy may cause the foot to turn in. ▸▸ Sleeping or sitting postures may not cause the problem but will delay the resolution of them. ▸▸ Compensating mechanisms for limb deformities. ▸▸ Tight muscles and ligaments at any level. ▸▸ Bone deformities in the hip, femur, knee, tibia, or feet.
8130 Royal Palm Blvd, Suite 201 Coral Springs, FL 33065
Examination of the Child
▸▸ Observation of the child at rest, standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Checking hip range of motion with the hip flexed and extended. ▸▸ Checking knee structure and the rotation of the tibia on the femur (lower leg bone relative to upper bone). ▸▸ Checking the position of the ankle and the leg bone to determine bone deformities. ▸▸ Observation of foot posture to check for curvatures and elevation or flattening of the arch. ▸▸ Neurological problems must be ruled out.
Pest Control & Termite Professionals No-TeNT TermiTe TreaTmeNT
Treatment
▸▸ To effectively treat rotational problems, the level and severity of the deformity must be determined. ▸▸ If sleeping and sitting position perpetuate the deformity, they must be changed. ▸▸ There may be a need for casting the foot, ankle and leg (every two weeks) to put tight ligaments and muscles into a continuous stretch. This may be necessary for anywhere from two to eight weeks. ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve muscle flexibility and to provide gait training to the child. ▸▸ In shoe custom molded orthotics or gait plates to help encourage normal walking. This is especially beneficial in the flatfooted child or ones who are intoed. ▸▸ Night braces or splinting to encourage and maintain correction. ▸▸ In rare cases, surgery may be necessary if the problems persist and walking becomes difficult or if the child continues to fall or trip. In most cases, continued observation of the child may be all that is necessary.
Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. SCHOOL NEWS
Miramar High School is Ready for Some Football! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
here was no better way to complete the 2017-2018 school year than with a surprise from the Miami Dolphins. The Miramar High School football team had no idea that they would be receiving an unexpected visit from Miami’s very own NFL team on a typical school day morning. Dolphins players and Miramar alumni Tracy Howard and Malcolm Lewis were all in attendance for the event along with a truck full of equipment. Tod Creneti from the Positive Coaching Alliance also came along to speak to the team about the importance of working together to achieve a common goal. “I came in 2008 with Malcolm and Tracy and they started on JV. That was my first year coaching, and I’m proud to see how both of those young men have grown into the next level and are giving back to our kids,” said Miramar High School Head Football Coach A.J. Scott. “We need this. We don’t have a lot of equipment to compete, so we really need this, and we really appreciate it. Anything from the Dolphins, if it’s something small as one pair of cleats, we appreciate it.” The Patriots were ecstatic to be receiving the donated equipment which included Dolphins
branded footballs, Gatorade coolers, running sleds, blocking shields, and cleats. They were able to interact with the AFC East football players and thank them for the generous gifts. “I want to thank the Dolphins organization. It has been a blessing for us, so we can be a blessing to our school to give back and donate equipment, shoes, everything that the kids need to better their season this year,” exclaimed Lewis. “It feels great to come out here and put a smile on these kids’ faces. They definitely need the equipment,” added Howard. “If I can say anything, it’s a blessing to be in this position and be able to give back with Malcolm knowing these are the stomping grounds we played on and came up on and this is one of the first places that it started for us.” “It was a good, life-changing experience. We got to see equipment that we may never had got to see a day in our life today. The sleds (will help me) with press coverage and getting off blocks,” expressed Miramar High School Junior cornerback Clifton Miller. “It’s good that the Dolphins actually look around the community and see how it is and pick schools out and give back.”

reetings Miramarians, I’m sure you’ve heard that the Miami Dolphins have visited Miramar in reference to possibly moving their training headquarters here. I recently hosted a town hall meeting to discuss the possibilities and get your thoughts as well as having Dolphins representatives in attendance to share their vision should this happen. It was a successful meeting with approximately 100 people in attendance voicing their support or sharing their concerns about the project. The proposed site is located between Everglades High School and Glades Middle, south of Bass Creek Road, between Dykes Road and Southwest 172 Avenue. There are other cities being considered and we are only in conversation but what a wonderful opportunity for our city should an agreement be approved by the city commission. I will continue to update you as the discussions continue. Our Youth Advisory Council (YAC), led by myself and Police Chief Dexter Williams, have two members who have graduated from high school and will be moving on. This year has been a wonderful time for YAC as they’ve been able to participate in many more activities within our City in addition to representing us during the National League of Cities Conference in the fall. They even taped a takeover of Miramar Today that is currently airing. We are very proud of the students who are selected to be members of this Council. They are smart, dynamic, outgoing and represent our city well. We wish all the members: Kaelan Rampasard, Roland Bhola, Ivette Borges, Yessika Pena, Josefina Cruz, Mikyla Canada, Giacomo Natteri, Giuliana Motoa, Amanda Joloya and Ivanna Fregoso a wonderful summer. To our graduating seniors, Kerri-Ann Henry and Yashara Jerome-Gachelin, it was wonderful having you both be a part of the group and we know you will do great things in the future. Every summer I head out into the community for “Conversations with the Mayor”. This provides an opportunity for residents to speak with me on-on-one if they choose or just hear an update about our City. Upcoming dates and locations are as follows: Wednesday, July 11th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., I’ll be at Soulfully Good Restaurant located at 6320 Miramar Pkwy. and on Thursday, July 12th, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., I will be at La Carretta located at 14791 Miramar Pkwy. In addition, I will be meeting with residents of Milano at Miramar and Mosaic at Miramar Town Center. Every year, the City of Miramar hosts one of the best fireworks shows of any city, and this year should be no different. Our festivities will take place at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway. The park opens at 4 p.m. If you’ve never been, join us. If you have, we look forward to welcoming you back. We truly live in the best country in the world and there is no better way to celebrate our freedom and liberty than to be with family, friends and neighbors. Happy 4th of July!

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Can You Keep Your College Student Safe BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
I
t’s the time of year when high school grads are preparing to leave for college. Whether attending a Florida school, or one in a state far away, it’s an exciting period for kids, but an emotional time for parents. They’ve lived under your roof for 18 years, and distance won’t keep you from worrying about their well-being. It’s no surprise you may wonder, “Have I done all that I can to keep them safe?” Many parents are stunned to discover that in medical emergencies they may not be entitled to information about their college-aged children. Why? Because in the eyes of the law, your 18-year old is an adult with rights of privacy. Legally, parents have no standing to know or do anything. In an emergency, how will health care providers determine whom to call with urgent news? Will they know your child’s prior medical history? Often, they simply won’t. What’s worse, even if a parent learns of a child’s illness or accident, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors and hospitals from providing information about an adult’s medical condition without his/ her written consent. While some hospitals make reasonable judgments about giving information to parents, others have refused to reveal anything, least of all over the phone. Some may not even acknowledge to frantic parents whether their adult child has been admitted to a hospital. What can a parent do? It’s simple. Have your adult child execute advance directives, which include the following: ▸▸ HIPPA Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information - Grants health care providers permission to disclose medical information to designated individuals, which is essential to informed and timely decision-making. ▸▸ Health Care Power of Attorney - A document that authorizes another person to make medical decisions for your adult child, if they cannot ▸▸ Living Will - A declaration stating whether or not life-sustaining procedures should be used to prolong life when a terminal condition is irreversible or death is imminent ▸▸ Emergency Information and Contact List - An organized, updated and concise presentation of prior medical history, allergies and emergency contact information Advance directives and emergency contact information should be immediately available when urgently needed, or the information is useless. We strongly recommend that every adult carry in their wallet an emergency medical information card that makes health/contact information and advance directives instantly accessible to medical facilities or emergency personnel anywhere in the world. HOME RUN
The Miramar Police and Fire Departments hit it out of the ball park as they raised approximately $2500 when they came together to support autism in the 2nd annual Battle of the Badges. The charity softball event at the Silver Lakes Sports Complex had plenty of fun for the entire family while increasing awareness for autism. See the full story on page 12.
