It’s Time to Go Back to School
S
ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.
It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between. Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated
to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it. Sincerely,
Christy and Terry Jaillet Christy & Terry Jaillet Publishers

Feel Irie at the Jamaican Independence Day Celebration BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t’s been a busy summer of celebrations in Miramar! We just commemorated America’s Independence Day last month and now it’s time to celebrate Jamaica’s Independence Day. The 4th of July was a day dedicated to independence, freedom, and liberty. Most celebrated with fireworks, barbeques, friends, and fun. However, Jamaica’s favorite holiday is not just one day, the independence festival runs for a week with a real sense of purpose. Jamaica’s Independence Celebration also includes Emancipation Day on August 1st, the significant date slavery was abolished in 1834. Freedom from servitude and colonial rule definitely merits a reason to celebrate,WHAT’S but it’s alsoHAPPENING a day of honoredIN to remember the birth of the country’s national identity.
MIRAMAR
Coincidentally, history shows that the origin of the undertaking came from Boston, Massachusetts, the same place America’s independent spirit was born during the Boston Tea Party. Boston was the birthplace of Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga. The fifth Prime Minister of Jamaica was so successful that he held the position for two terms. Besides being in the constituency for forty years, the music loving politician produced the West Indian Records Limited. It quickly became the most popular label in the Caribbean featuring the very best local talent and musicians. Later when the country gained its independence Seaga then created the Jamaican Independence Day Festival to establish a sense of identity and to commemorate his beloved country’s history and culture. His love for his country and its people was always apparent, and he wanted to recognize such an important day. Although the festivities are huge throughout Jamaica, one doesn’t need to have a passport or get on a plane to participate in the grand celebration. Locals can get in the spirit and celebrate Jamaica’s

The Giving Trees – Miramar Community Garden Receives Grant BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
here’s something always happening at the Miramar Community Garden (MCG), and earlier this summer the beloved garden hosted a “Tree Planting ‘Pop-Up’ Day” after receiving a prestigious grant from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF). The awardwinning international nonprofit charity is dedicated to planting fruitful trees and plants to alleviate world hunger,

combat climate change, strengthen communities, and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water. The Miramar Community Garden was honored to be one of the first gardens in the country to be chosen for the grant. It was a very special day for Miramar families to plant alongside Lizzy Rainey, Programs Manager and lead Arborist Rico Montenegro from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. “The ultimate goal for the Fruit Tree Planting Plantation is to plant 18 million fruit trees all over the world to help people understand the importance of healthy nutrition. We have had projects all over the world. We bring fruit trees into communities and in schools, parks and animal sanctuaries. More and more people are sharing an interest not only in a healthy diet but just wanting to grow their own food,” exclaimed Montenegro. “There’s an excitement of being physically involved with the planting of fruit trees. Young people have never seen these types of fruits before; they may have eaten apples but may not know what an apple tree looks
like. When we tell them that apple trees can live up to 200 years, long after you’re gone they will be here for your kids’ kids. We don’t exist in this place by ourselves, we all can make a difference by working together.” More than 50 volunteers came out to plant an assortment of exotic tropical trees. Bananas, Berries, Cacao, Pomegranate, Coffee and other delicious fruit trees and shrubs were added to their existing fruit grove. Prior to the event, the FTPF met with the garden staff to determine the best varieties suited for the site. Children ages six years and older were also encouraged to participate with MCG’s new child-sized shovels. After the rewarding work of planting 22 trees, participants celebrated with a delicious lunch provided by Antonio’s Pizzeria and listened to an informative lecture from Rico Montenegro who showed everyone how to plant trees for success. Attendees also enjoyed refreshing watermelon, summer’s favorite fruit.

he Miramar High School Track and Field Team had plenty to celebrate at the end of June during the much anticipated 2018 signing day. Eight student athletes gathered to show their intent and to sign their letters for where they plan on going to college this fall. The astonishingly talented team signed with colleges all over the country including Princeton, Bethune-Cookman and Texas A & M. After evaluating offers from Miami, LSU, and Oregon, Jamal Walton, a top prospect nationwide, decided to commit to the renowned Texas university. “I felt great going to Texas A & M since I feel that it’s a great environment for me to go, to run and to hang out with the team. I’ll do my best there,” stated Walton. The record setting track star has accomplished a multitude of accolades including winning the

gold at the 2017 Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships last summer. He was the secondfastest high school athlete to ever run the 400-meter in 44.9 seconds. This achievement qualified him for the 2017 World Outdoor Championships in London. While in the UK, the fast sprinting Patriot, who also runs internationally for the Cayman Islands team, qualified for the semifinals where he posted his second and third-fastest marks of all time by running 45.05 and 45.16 seconds. “I used to be nervous, but to know how good he is, I just watch and the majority of the time he finishes number one!” exclaimed Maji Burgess, Walton’s proud aunt. Since Walton laced up his first pair of running shoes at the young age of four, he hasn’t stopped
chasing his dream. His impressive list of accomplishments on and off the track have his coach also beaming with pride. “Coaching Jamal is like coaching LeBron James on the track and field. He’s a phenom and pleasure to coach,” said Christopher McComb, Miramar High School Head Track Coach. “The records he breaks, the levels he has been able to reach - he just may take me to the next level. It’s been an honor!” Coach McComb also noted that Walton has made everyone around him better. The boys’ track and field team won States in 2017 and the girls’ team won their first-ever district title in 2018. “At the end of the day, you can win, and nothing comes out of it, but getting these kids to college makes it so much better,” added McComb. “It is so gratifying!”
EYE CARE
Are Your Child’s Eyes Ready for the Classroom BY MICHAEL CHESEN, OD
M
Back to School Specials
any doctors believe that around 80% of learning occurs through a child’s eyes. Since a child’s eyesight may change frequently, consistent eye and vision care is crucial to a student’s classroom success. Surprisingly, most parents are not including eye exams as part of their child’s back-toschool doctor’s visit line-up. Furthermore, survey results show that over 50% of parents don’t take their child for an eye exam until at least age three. The AOA actually suggests that children receive their first eye screening at six months, then comprehensive vision examinations starting at age three, before beginning school. Exams should continue to be booked routinely every other year from that point on. Often the issues a child deals with in the classroom can come from sight difficulties. The number of students who are suffering from undiagnosed vision problems is quite high. Over 60% of students classified as students with learningdisabilities actually have undiagnosed vision problems. Your child will be much better off if you take a proactive role in ensuring your child is seeing properly. Don’t push off your child’s first vision screening until kindergarten. Pediatricians should perform a dilated eye exam to discover any serious eye problems within the age of two months. Every child should have a complete eye checkup by age five, since early intervention can make a difference. Additionally as a parent, it’s important to see whether your child is reading sufficiently. Generally, kindergarteners are excited to look at books and try and figure out words. Children that don’t read books may be experiencing a vision problem. Before you assume the worst, it’s a good idea to get a vision examination. For a pediatric eye exam at Mirvision, call us to book an appointment.

Remember that the earlier a vision problem is identified and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. And vision is an essential component for school work. If a child’s eyesight is flawed, increasing visual demands, such as finer print in textbooks or more homework, can considerably change a student’s success. At the same time, new technology in the classroom, such as using interactive SMARTboards, can also possibly exacerbate less obvious vision issues. Without proper eyesight, children may suffer not only at school, but also mentally, physically and emotionally. Before school starts this year, make sure your child’s vision is on par! Miramar Panamanians Got a Kick Out of Watching the World Cup Together BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
pproximately 200 Panamanians from Miramar and some neighboring cities came together in June to watch the World Cup at Juana Sports Grill in the Town Center. It didn’t matter that the Panama vs. Belgium game was being played on a Monday morning at 11am either. Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne hosted the watch party and other City officials including Mayor Wayne Messam were in attendance to mix, mingle, and celebrate with fellow Panamanians. Although Colbourne has lived in Miramar for 25 years. Miramar’s favorite Vice Mayor was born in Panama City to Jamaican parents. The excitement was contagious as fans missed work and gathered to support their team. This was Panama’s first time playing in the anticipated world-renowned event. It was a his-
toric moment for the proud Panamanians, and regardless of the outcome being a part of it was a victory no less. The final score on that early June morning was 3-0 with a win for Belgium, but it did not dampen the spirit of those watching the game. The 2018 FIFA World Cup is the 21st FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament, played every four years. This was the first world cup held in Eastern Europe, and the first tournament played on two continents – Europe and Asia. The final tournament involved thirty-two national teams. Twenty of these teams made a recurring appearance since the last event in 2014 while both Iceland and Panama made their debuts. A total of 64 matches were played in 12 venues located in 11 cities. The final took place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in July with France as the 2018 champion. “It is huge to experience this historic moment together. We have a great sense of pride to have our team play in the World Cup,” exclaimed Colbourne. “Just being here is a victory and anything else is extra!”

Growing Pains In Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.
Causes:
▸▸ Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside. ▸▸ Children that are knock-kneed. ▸▸ Tight muscles, especially the calf, hamstrings and external rotator muscles of the hips.
Symptoms: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the shinbone. Premature fatigue with activity. General avoidance of activity and sports. Leg pain, especially at night. Lower back pain. Often associated with toe walkers. Many children who have been diagnosed with growing pains have primary causes that can be addressed with great success. Many of these children are not able to keep up with their peers during activity due to pain and premature fatigue and ultimately this may affect their self-esteem. They become more likely to sit at home and work with computers and are less likely to participate in sports. Inactive
children usually become inactive adults who may be overweight. It is critical to understand why these children or teenagers are having leg discomfort and not have the problem brushed off as growing pains.
Treatment may include:
▸▸ Changing of shoe gear to add more support. ▸▸ Physical therapy to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength, coordination and reaction time. ▸▸ Custom molded orthotic (sole inserts) to realign the lower extremity. In many cases this will almost overnight eliminate a lot of the leg pains that these children experience. ▸▸ Casting the leg to stretch the calf muscle may be needed. Early identification of predisposing causes to these growing pains is important to the child and teenager’s overall health and wellness. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. iramar residents and high school students Gabriella Carter and Giacomo Natteri were both selected as Bank of America Student Leaders®. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selects only five exceptional high school juniors and seniors for this coveted position in their elite program at the YMCA of Broward County. The eight-week paid summer internship opportunity gave these exceptional students the opportunity to develop and apply leadership skills through handson community work experience at local nonprofit organizations as part of the Bank of America’s Student Leaders® program. The students also attended a leadership summit in Washington D.C. with 200 fellow students from around the country where they met with members of Congress, learned about diversity, nonprofit work, and built leadership skills. Gabriella Carter, a senior at Miramar High School, has had a challenging road to her success. A daughter of Jamaican parents, she came to the United States from London at the age of thirteen. Despite having to make new friends, learn a new culture, and assimilate to her new life, she created a club called Helping Overcome Problems Effectively (HOPE). She took her

own feelings of being an outcast to help others find a safe place to end mental health stigmas and youth drug use and violence. “My experience with the Bank of America Student Leaders Program ® has been beyond enriching. I have gained so much exposure to the challenges non-profit organizations endure and absolutely love every second of my internship working with the children. Spending time with the children in the fitness summer camps never fails to reaffirm my passions for aiding youth and showing them all the fun ways to live a healthy life. As part of the internship, I’ve visited communities with varying resources and aid, which reinforces the reasons why I love mentoring
and community service in general. I’m so thankful to Bank of America and the YMCA of South Florida for affording me this experience!” exclaimed Carter. Giacomo Natteri, a junior at Everglades High School, serves as vice president of his junior Class of 2019 and is an executive office board member at his local YMCA where he holds yearly collection drives and events for those in need. He is also extremely involved with the City of Miramar Mayor’s office. “Being a student leader for Bank of America has presented itself with so many opportunities for me to grow as a member of my community, such as working with the YMCA of South Florida to provide meals for those in need and more. In addition, I’m proud to work alongside our Mayor which has allowed me to establish Miramar as a prominent city within the National League of Cities, as well as understand how we benefit from civic participation,” added Giacomo Natteri. n Since 2004, the program has connected more than 3,000 young adults nationwide. MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Let’s Enjoy the Last Days of Summer BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR ow quickly the summer is going by and I’m hoping you’ve all had a great time enjoying friends and family with time for vacation. Before school starts, there are a few events taking place which I want to share with you. August is the month where we celebrate Jamaica’s Independence and Flag Day. I’ve combined the celebration into one and called it Emancipendence Day. Come experience a little bit o’ Jamaica with us on Monday, August 6th at 6 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center. Over the past year, the Department of Homeland Security’s ICE Facility in our City of Miramar has been the subject of inhumane conditions for the individuals who have to report there. Families including children arrive as early as5 AM and have to wait for hours in the elements without shelter. In addition to the inhumane treatment of those who must report to the facility, our local residents and businesses in the surrounding area are being impacted due to the crowds and lack of adequate parking and the city has received many complaints. I want you to know that the city has heard your voices. I will be providing an overview of the facts and will give updates to what the city has done and the demands we have made to the Department of Homeland Security at an ICE Town Hall Meeting hosted by Congressman Alcee Hastings and I with participants from ICE and the General Services Administration. The Town Hall will take place on Wednesday, August 8th at 6:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers. Also, this summer, I teamed up with Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert to present the Mayors’ Pop Up Yoga in our respective cities for eight weeks of summertime fun every Thursday. The final two sessions will be Thursday, August 2nd and August 9th, locations are announced every Monday via social media. Twitter: @WayneMessam, Facebook: /MayorWayneMessam and through eblasts out of my office. On Friday, August 10th from 4 p.m.-8 p.m., I will be hosting a Back to School Event at Shirley Branca Park. This event will not simply be a book Photography: Gregory F. Reed back giveaway, it will also include speakers covering bullying, mental health and overall encouragement for our students and a Hip Hop Concert featuring local artists. For information regarding any of these events, please contact my office at elaroche@miramarfl.gov Yours in Service,

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Life Can Change in an Instant BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ime and time again, we are reminded that life can change in an instant. Perhaps it’s the story of your best friend’s dad simply getting the mail when he had a massive heart attack. Or the cousin who was killed by a drunk driver on their way home from work. How often do we think, “We do not know what life may bring.” Another tragic reminder is the string of national mass killings over the last few years. Whether in our own Parkland or Fort Lauderdale backyards, in a nightclub in Orlando, an elementary school in Newtown, a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, we are reminded that life can change in the blink of an eye. What all of these tragedies have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends and communities. People, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can all agree that life does not always go the way you expected. Plans put off until later, may never happen. Other life events may provide a burst of motivation encouraging you to think about your own mortality sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare or seeing the aftermath of the death of a friend or family member.

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see first hand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind. But the majority of my estate planning practice focuses on helping clients prospectively prepare to take care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. As a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of. Now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you help look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to contribute to? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are many other questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Let’s Keep Our Kids Safe BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS s summer vacations begin to wind down and parents start preparations for their children to return to school, let’s not forget that as a community we must ALL do our part to keep kids safe. Motor vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children 2-14 years old. Most of these fatalities could be prevented with the proper precautions: ► Make sure children are wearing their seatbelts. ► Teach your children to cross at the appropriate crosswalks and not run through traffic. ► Do not double park or block crosswalks, as it reduces the visibility for other children and vehicles. ► Adhere to speed limits, stay alert and take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas. ► Remember to put the phone down when driving! The Miramar Police Departments has been keeping kids safe by providing student resource officers (SROs) in our public schools for decades. The fundamental concept of the SRO program is to have students and faculty interact with the same officers on a day-to-day basis, thus building trust and developing relationships with the youth of our community. The program allows officers to identify at risk students and provide quality intervention before matters get out of hand and escalate. SROs handle all calls for service at their assigned schools, conduct student counseling sessions and assist with traffic issues during drop off and release periods. Student resource officers teach SOAR (Students Obtaining Achievement and Responsibility), designed to provide relative, real-life lessons to 5th grade students consisting of anti-bullying, goal setting, truancy, resisting gangs, drug abuse awareness, peer pressure, bicycle safety and more. Officers also teach gun safety to children in Pre-K through 3rd grade and the four important steps to take if they find a gun (Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area and Tell an Adult). A school resource officer is assigned to every Miramar public school (two at the high schools). Although speaking with our children about safety issues should be yearround, now is a good time to teach them skills to protect them from predators. Unfortunately, this conversation should not just be about strangers, as children are more likely to be sexually abused by someone they know. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization has valuable safety and prevention information online (www.rainn.org). In closing, please remember that communication is key to working together effectively. If you see something, say something: report any suspicious activity immediately. Please also follow-us on Twitter and Facebook for additional safety information.

of the
Month
This is Prince. He is a rescue. My daughter used to puppy-sit him, but the last time his mother never came to pick him up. My daughter fell deeply in love with him & prayed to keep him. It took our family about a year to get him healthy and happy. He is our angel & the glue to our family. His favorite person is Mom (Nancy) & his sister (Francesca). He loves..... well, needs all the attention, & being carried around like a real prince, & cheese! He doesn’t like dog food..... so spoiled! His favorite thing to do is go on car rides with his sister, listening to reggae music, drooling out the window.
