Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

E

xplorer Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513, claiming the land for Spain. Five hundred years later, settlers from Spanish-speaking countries continue to call Florida home. In fact, almost 30% of the population in Broward County and nearly 70% in Miami Dade is Hispanic. That is why National Hispanic Heritage Month is especially meaningful here in South Florida. Observed from September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Throughout the month, there will be numerous events and celebrations taking place, such as the Hispanic Heritage Festival at Miramar Regional Park on September 16th, a Hispanic Heritage Concert at the NSU Miniaci Performing Arts Center on October 8th, or the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival on October 14th at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library featuring food, music, crafts, and storytelling. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section in Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests.

Arc Broward - Arc Works: Preparing Students to Enter the Workforce COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he Arc WorkBar center for members with disabilities opened in February 2017. It is the epicenter for Arc Works, one of the three initiatives launched by Arc Broward recently. This is where much of the training takes place. It’s also where all the training students receive culminates into the final steps toward entering the workforce. The Arc Works initiative is perhaps the most important step clients take. According to Melissa Gousse, the Training and Career Development Manager, with the organization for eight (8) years, during this final step, they are trained in important job and life skills such as writing resumes, interview tips and practices, developing spending plans, and managing finances. Each student works with a Mentor to provide direction and help them with job searches. Included in the program are three workforce readiness skills classes. Ms. Gousse oversees this part of the process. She guides clients toward “putting knowledge into practice.” Arc WorkBar boasts a 2,600 square-foot facility featuring classes, seminars, and hands-on training. However, this is just a part of the equation. Another of its prime functions is to provide a stimulating environment for participants to gather and foster connections, both socially and professionally. It allows clients to flourish and reach their full potential. It is a place where they can have a vivacious, creative environment to network with people in the business community, pursue their career goals (not just jobs), and further enrich their training. The ultimate goal of Arc Works is to provide meaningful placement that is in the best interest of both the employer and the client. Some of the employers who strongly support Arc

Works employee placement are Publix Supermarkets, Walgreens, Planet Fitness, City Furniture, and more! In addition, it’s become a resource for training businesses to affirm a smooth transition for Arc Broward clients into the workforce and help companies’ diversity goals. Arc Broward gives long-term support to its students and graduates. Julie Price, Vice President of Programs and Social Enterprises, refers to this as “wrap-around support.” It is ongoing and graduates are always welcome to stop by the Arc WorkBar to connect with teachers and classmates. Arc Broward receives candidates for their programs and their initiatives through a variety of sources. Some come as wordof-mouth referrals, others from multiple organizations such as the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation counselors, mental health case managers, school counselors, and from the several agencies who work with people with disabilities. Funding is provided by many associations, such as Broward County, United Way, the Social Security Administration, and a significant number of private contributors. For more information about this facility, visit: http://www.arcbrowardlearning.com. The Arc WorkBar is located at 735 NE 2nd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304 in the Flagler Arts Village. (2nd Avenue is also known as Flagler Blvd.) Look for more on the Arc Culinary and Arc Tech programs in future articles.

Jamaica 55 Emancipendence Celebration! BY HELEN PENLAND

COMMUNITY NEWS

Now – the event name? Jamaica achieved Emancipation on August 3rd and gained its Independence on August 6th from England in the year of 1962. Combine the two names and we get Emancipendence! It is also the title of a poem written by Dr. Susan Davis, who assisted in organizing this event. Her poem was performed by Maxine “Queen” Osborne. Judge Norman Hemming served as Master of Ceremonies and paired with the many entertainment participants, the night became a true tribute to all things Jamaican! The gala celebrated the multitude of contributions to the city of Miramar and elsewhere by the Jamaican community members, from cultural to educational. Musicians included Randy Corinthian from RC Music Group and Sons of Mystro, who according to their Facebook page, are “young violinists set to take the WORLD by storm.” Vocalist Steve Higgins performed, accompanied by his 2-year-old son. During the evening, awards were given for three categories – Humanitarian, Education, and Business. They were: ▸▸ Humanitarian: Robin Mahfood, CEO of Food for the Poor ▸▸ E ducation: Dr. Malou Harrison, President of Miami-Dade College, North Campus Mayor Wayne Messam with Representatives from Executive Sponsor, Trinity Health Care Services, LLC. W

hat’s in a name? In this case, everything! Explanation is to come… Mayor Wayne Messam hosted an exciting celebration to honor the milestone 55th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence! The event was held at the Miramar Cultural Center on July 27th and the Mayor is proud to say it was attendance was wonderful. The facility was full to capacity! This marked the third year the festival was held as one of the Mayor’s initiatives.

▸▸ Business: The Clayborne family: Franchisees of Golden Krust restaurants A highlight of the evening was the attendance by Jamaica Consul General Franz Hall. He accepted and acknowledged a proclamation that recognizes August 3rd as “Jamaica Emancipendence Day in Miramar.” Supporters of the event included several sponsors: Executive Sponsor Trinity Health Care Services, LLC, the Jamaica Tourist Board, Western Union, Victoria Mutual Building Society, Jamaica National Bank, and Grace Foods.

Miramar Kiwanis Club Collects Food for People in Need BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he Miramar Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club held a food collection drive on Saturday, July 15th and Sunday, July 16th outside of the Publix at River run, nonperishable food items. The Kiwanis Club members, assisted by Miramar High School Key Club members, handed out flyers along with copies of the Publix weekly ad. Ideally, the two-for-one items would catch their attention and the second one would be dropped into the Kiwanis Club carts as customers left the store. Unfortunately, many food pantries are depleted of supplies during the summer. At the very least, they run low on supplies to help those in need. The Kiwanis Club was contacted by Miramar Social Services at the City of Miramar to alert them of their situation. In true form of their commitment to service, Kiwanis Club and Key Club members jumped at the request for help. From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day, the Kiwanis Club members and five Key Club members were able to collect seven full carts of nonperishable food items for the food bank. They gave all donations to the City of Miramar Social Services’ food pantry and will be distributed to the local residents in need. For more information about the Kiwanis Club and their initiatives, check out their website at http://www.kiwanismiramarpines.com/ or contact them at kiwanismpp@gmail.com.

15-Year Milestone for At-Risk Youth Summer Camp COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

16

H

angin’ with 5-0” celebrated 15 years of serving at-risk youths this summer! The program is a jointly-supported initiative between Miramar Police Athletic League, the City of Miramar, with sponsorship by Sunbeam Properties and Development and the Miramar Park of Commerce. This year, more than 80 students, ages nine to 14 years old, participated in “Hangin’ with 5-0.” Students are selected by their schools’ guidance counselors and resource officers. The program is entirely free for the participants. During the six-week summer camp, every day the students are served breakfast and lunch. They enjoyed a wide range of activities including trips to the beach, going to the movies, touring the Everglades, and much more, accompanied by Miramar Police Department officers. All events are also organized by the police offi-

cers and during these events, officers provide mentorship and act as chaperones for the students. At the end of the program, everyone enjoys a pizza party! According to City of Miramar Police Officer and Miramar Police Athletic League Executive Director Scott Hadley, “…what they take away from this program is invaluable.” One of the goals of “Hangin’ with 5-0” effort is to help close the gap between local youth and police officers. It’s become a partnership between kids and local police officers. In 2008, the program was on the chopping block because of budget cuts, but Sunbeam Properties stepped in with funding to keep the project going. Sunbeam Properties and Development supports a variety of Miramar nonprofit organizations in addition to “Hangin’ with 5-0.”

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Miramar/Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club Celebrates 26 Years COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he Miramar/Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club (MPPKC) celebrated 26 Years of service to the area on August 16th at Bokamper’s Sports Grill in Miramar! Kiwanis members from all of Broward County were invited along with other local officials and the public. Chamber of Commerce president Robert Goltz attended the event along with local officials.

This does not include the smiles and friendships made during the years because Kiwanis cared, especially those made because of #KidsNeedKiwanis. According to Angie Font, the MPPKC group has raised at least $80,000 in college scholarships and gives approximately 1,200 hours annually to mentoring students. The Club directly works with multiple Key Clubs from Miramar high schools.

Among the many thousands of hours of service the Kiwanis Club donates to the community, the extraordinary projects they organized are almost too many to count. Not boasting, by any means, since its inception the organization: ▸▸ Donated many, many pounds of food during every Thanksgiving season ▸▸ Provided many hours to mentoring Key Club students ▸▸ Arranged and worked with equine-assisted physical therapy at the riding arena for the “Horses and Handicapped” program ▸▸ Thousands of dollars for college scholarships ▸▸ Flipped hundreds of pancakes to raise funds ▸▸ Planned multiple projects, attended, worked, and supported them across Broward County ▸▸ Collected school supplies, clothes, toys, and many other items for charitable use

Experience Florida’s Habitat at the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

M

ost weekends, Phil Horowitz and his family can be found at the City of Pembroke Pines Chapel Trail Nature Preserve Nature Preserve, which is often called one of Broward County’s best kept secrets. It has become a favorite spot for families, environmentalists, photographers, Audubon Society members, bird watchers and many others. It is accessible to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic. “It is incredible that this untouched gem exists just a few minutes from home,” said Horowitz. “It is a great way for my family to disconnect and just enjoy the beautiful nature together.” Michael Moran also visits with his family. “We love to walk on the boardwalk and rent boats,” said Moran. “We always see turtles, birds and fish. Occasionally, we even spot an alligator. It is a great place to see nature and wildlife up close.” The Preserve encompasses over 450 acres of reconstructed habitat in Florida’s first known wetland bank (Chapel Trail Conservation District). Since it officially opened in January 2005, it has received numerous honors and awards for serving as an excellent example of how to recreate a wetland. There are 1,650 feet of elevated boardwalks that extend out over the marshy area. The boardwalks allow visitors to view the Preserve’s large assortment

of wildlife, which consists of over 120 species of birds, deer, rabbits, alligators, snakes, turtles, largemouth bass, insects, butterflies and more. Educational signs along the boardwalk inform visitors about the plants and wildlife that call the Preserve home. Rest stations also line the boardwalk and provide visitors with an opportunity to take a break to reflect and enjoy the scenery. Residents and students can also take advantage of the Preserve’s Environmental Interpretative Center, which is available by appointment. It offers a unique environmental educational opportunity and enhances the learning experience for visitors who want to observe and learn first-hand about the wonders of Florida’s habitat. On Saturdays, from 9am to 12noon, visitors can get a close-up view of the area by renting canoes for only $7/hour. During the self-guided waterway sightseeing excursion, visitors will see surprises at every bend. The Chapel Trail Nature Preserve is located at 19800 Sheridan Street, north of the Chapel Trail development and about a mile east of U.S. 27. For information, call 954-392-2130 or visit www. ppines.com.

o adolescent likes to be caught wearing something that makes them different. For some teenagers, eyeglasses can often feel that way. Just the thought of wearing glasses can send a teenager running in the other direction. In comparison, a newly published report says that kids and teenagers who wear contact lenses feel a significant enhancement in their appearance. The research results show that starting at the age of eight, children may prefer being offered the choice of contact lenses. The research was recorded in Eye & Contact Lens, which is published by the Contact Lens Association. Just how do contacts enhance an adolescent’s self-esteem? Young adults are self-conscious and they often feel better about themselves when glasses are not the center of their appearance. Contact lenses may help teens feel greater self-esteem and more comfortable around others by providing them with a less visible option for vision correction. Although teens are frequently fitted with contact lenses, children under 13 are not usually given the option of lenses. Many eye doctors and parents don’t believe that children are mature enough to deal with them properly. With the right instruction, however, children as young as eight years old are very capable of wearing and caring for contacts and they should be offered the option. Generally, before your child purchases contacts, you should consult your optometrist to find out about any potential issues your child might have. Our Miramar optometry practice can help you determine the right prescription for your teen’s contacts. If your child or teenager is in need of vision correction, why not consider contact lenses? Through just a simple soft lens, you can enhance your teen’s selfimage. With the large array of contacts on the market, you and your eye care practitioner can work with your child to decide what type of lens is most suitable for their character and lifestyle. For further assistance with your eye care and eyewear needs, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

How to Make Debt Collectors Pay Big Money for Consumer Harassment BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE & CONSUMER ADVOCACY ATTORNEY

M

illions of consumers across the country are unaware of their rights when it comes to the bombardment of debt collection calls. Unfortunately, it happens every day, perhaps multiple times a day. The telephone rings and you pick up only to find yourself a victim to the unlawful tactics of relentless debt collectors pressuring you to pay. Most individuals believe this behavior is lawful and feel like they have no option other than to deal with such harassment and eventually pay -- whether the debt is actually owed or not. This month, we will discuss how a federal law has far reaching applications to benefit consumers harassed by creditors and debt collection companies and law firms. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) was enacted as a safeguard to punish debt collectors from overreaching their authority and to award those who are victimized by such acts with money in their pocket. In fact, many debts can be wiped away, along with deletion of negative credit information to resolve consumer claims under the FDCPA. Although the FDCPA was established as a shield against unlawful conduct, most debt collectors ignore these rules. They figure that the benefit of receiving payment from those who don’t know their rights outweighs the detriment from the few who actually stand up and fight back. The following are just a few of the common FDCPA violations debt collectors commit when making a call to an individual’s telephone seeking payment: ▸▸ Providing information about your debt to someone else other than yourself ▸▸ Threats or using abusive language ▸▸ A debt collector can only call between the hours of 8am and 9pm, based upon the time zone where the consumer is located. ▸▸ Pretending to be someone else ▸▸ A debt collector is not allowed to contact an individual who is represented by an attorney regarding a specific debt. ▸▸ Miscalculating the total amount owed by the consumer and demanding the incorrect amount under threat of legal action These are just a few of the many scenarios where hiring an attorney can help provide you with peace from harassing phone calls and may even result in an award of huge damages and a reduction or elimination of debt. For example, a debt collector, including law firms, that erroneously calculates even by one dollar the amount owed by a consumer with respect to a homeowner’s association debt, mortgage debt, or credit card debt, may result in statutory damages and attorneys’ fees in excess of $10,000. Claims raised under the FDCPA are another way in which The Arcia Law Firm can assist consumers to obtain a huge recovery against over-reaching debt collectors. Most importantly, when hiring the Arcia Law Firm to handle a FDCPA claim, consumers are not responsible for any out of pocket expenses or any money down. Whether you have been the victim of unwanted telephone calls or texts, or seek assistance with understanding your rights as a consumer faced with harassing debt collection phone calls and other tactics, our Firm will be able to assist you. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of consumers in our community against unethical and unscrupulous debt collectors. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation with Omar Arcia to discuss your case in detail. Are You Single?

M

ore than half of all adults in America are single. It is common to hear singles say they don’t have many assets, so having a will or other estate planning documents are not necessary. Consider that modern estate planning is less about money, and more about control. Whether single, married, divorced or widowed, with or without children, most people want to control their lives while they are alive, and then choose who will be in control should they become disabled. They also want to leave what assets they do have to whom they want, while not leaving behind a legal mess for family members to unravel. Whether you have children or not, the following are important estate planning issues for singles to consider:

LEGALLY SPEAKING

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

Single with minor children

It is vital to designate whom you wish to serve as their guardian. Think about this. Even if your children have a surviving parent, they may not be your choice to serve as guardian. What about leaving assets to your minor children? Realistically, leaving an inheritance to minor children can be fraught with risks. Who manages the assets for your minor children? Should you select your ex-spouse or perhaps another family member? Often parents select one person to serve as guardian for minor children, name another individual to manage and invest assets for their children, and possibly choose a third to determine asset distributions.

Single with adult children

When a child turns 18, legally he or she is fully capable to receive their inheritance and make life decisions, such as selecting a college, or managing and spending their own money. Do 401(k) and IRA accounts constitute a significant portion of your estate? Severe and irreversible tax consequences can result from careless withdrawals from these inherited assets by “young” beneficiaries. Any concerns about your child inheriting a large amount of life insurance money? Parents of 18-year olds recognize that while their child is technically an adult, it may be much too early to expect thoughtful decisions regarding their future and their finances.

Single without children

If you are single without children, keep in mind that Florida law provides that your assets be inherited by your parents. If your parents do not survive you, your assets will be inherited by your surviving siblings. Having a will is essential if you wish to leave your assets to anyone other than your immediate family.

Illness or disability

Whether you have children or not, there are important decisions to make regarding who is authorized by you to assist with medical and financial matters should you become ill or disabled. Advance legal directives, in the form of health care powers of attorney, durable powers of attorney, living wills, and HIPAA releases, insure your bases are covered in various scenarios. Without such documents, urgent medical care, managing a business or your finances, and communicating with governmental agencies such as the IRS, or Social Security Administration, may need to be determined by the court. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualiications and experience.

Gandalf (Gandy) is a 5-year old, domesticated feral rescue. His name comes from Gandalf the Grey, the wizard in the Hobbit movies. Gandy is very tall and weighs in at a healthy 18 pounds.
