Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community. It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year! Sincerely,

Chamber Presents Keynote Speaker Lucinda Cross at Modern Women in Business Summit BY HELEN PENLAND

L

ucinda Cross, an astounding motivational speaker, was the Keynote Speaker at an event titled “Modern Women in Business Summit” sponsored by the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce presented by the Women in Business Committee. As a corporate coach and speaker in high demand, Lucinda has been featured on the TODAY Show, Dr. Oz and BET. With four bestselling books under her belt, she shares her message with overflowing audiences throughout the country. Her message? It is all about change. She encourages participants to take command of their own destiny. Lucinda’s high-impact words of wisdom include ideas about strategy and self-discovery, helping people become “unstuck.”

The Modern Women in Business Summit

Women ranging in ages from 30s to 50s attended the summit, held at the Hilton Garden Inn. They represented a wide variety of businesses from diverse backgrounds. Attendees included many successful business professionals willing to answer questions and offer sound advice. Lucinda concentrated her presentation on how to get motivated to realize objectives and achieve higher levels of success. Her delivery was vibrant, powerful, empowering, and engaging. As a part of the summit, they organized breakout sessions and lively panel discussions. There were even opportunities for one to one coaching periods. When Lucinda spoke with the attendees, she said the objectives of each person varied extensively. Those in their 50s wished to create something to feed their bottom line and add value to their company. The younger group wanted to get focused, gain exposure, and find the “sweet spot” for their brands. They were also more active in networking events, chambers, and women’s conferences.

More About Lucinda Cross

Lucinda’s story is a triumphant one. It started while she was in college and struggling to pay for tuition. She became entangled in an illegal operation and

spent four and a half years in federal prison for laundering contraband. Rather than take on a negative attitude, she approached the life-changing chain of events in a different manner. In an interview with Lucinda she said, “I turned to messages I heard by motivational speakers such as Les Brown and Tony Robbins.” They asked their listeners to envision their goal and “put a picture on it.” So, Lucinda did. Many pictures. She cut photos from magazines of what she wanted after prison and pasted them together. That was the beginning of the Vision Board kits she developed, helping change her life and thousands of others throughout the years. Although her goals changed a bit, after Ms. Cross’s release in 2000 she obtained her degree from Mercy College and got a job. Her focus turned to new goals. According to Lucinda, “Business became everything.” Her new goal was the key to her future. She developed a life-coaching brand called “Activate Your Life Today!” designed for personal and professional growth. In 2013, Lucinda launched the “Activate” brand. She created developmental programs and workshops for women and youth at risk. The vision boards are a significant part of the workshops. Lucinda Cross is no doubt an inspiring, energized woman. She is married and now has three children. Lucinda balances her busy schedule and personal life with a very supportive family. Local Author Publishes 1st Read-Together Kids Book: The Magic Fingers! COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

A

re you looking for a loving, educational book with life lessons to read with your young children? Look no further. Long-time resident of Miramar, author Michael Lambert, with help of his wife Christine, has published his first children’s book. It’s a “read-together” book for both parents and children, that encourages positive behavior for children. There is so much to say about this book and how it came about! Here, we try to sum it up in one article. So where do we start? At the beginning. While the children were growing up, Michael had several daily and even nightly rituals he carried out that made them all very happy. One was carrying them upstairs to bed. Sometimes he would play the guitar and sing songs or other funny things as they got older. But the most important was the Magic Fingers.

The Idea is Born

At some point, their young son Michael became very interested in King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. He was particularly interested in the knights’ “Code of Chivalry.” This is where the Magic Fingers truly began. The code consists of six characteristics. The codes are honesty, helping others, bravery, tolerating discomfort, being loyal to friends and obeying leaders, and not boasting or bragging. So, Michael began talking about the codes and assigned one for each finger. The final code stands for each code working together as a group and the rules associated with each finger are the real magic. On the website Michael explains, “The Magic Fingers work together like a team to do almost anything. But the rules that each finger teach us is the real

magic. A parent’s time spent reading this book to their children can be fun AND help the parent mold their child’s future.” Christine said, “Over the years, we found the Magic Fingers gave us a much closer connection with our children. Today the children (Michael, now 15 and Carol, 13) support the book wholeheartedly.” The book’s concept is a result of more than 10 years of parenting. During those years, he noticed a growing number of children that exhibited poor behavior in our society. He doesn’t believe there are either “good” or “bad” children, but primarily display a replication of adult interactions they observe. Nor does he believe there is only one way to raise children correctly. Here is where the opportunity comes for parents and guardians to step in, spend quality time with their children, provide quiet time, and mold their growth and behavior. Utilizing his book helps. The book has become quite popular. They have read to young children in local schools since it was published. Check out the website at the end of the article to schedule a reading!

What the Book is Designed to Do

He admits he’s not a psychologist or therapist, but observed that children can be taught from an early age what “good” behavior means. The book is meant to help do that. In addition, it’s intended to: ▸▸ Offer a guideline for good actions

▸▸ Help design a specific scheduled time for adults to spend quiet time with their kids ▸▸ Allow adults the opportunity to explain what being “good” means from an early age ▸▸ Provide guidelines for good behavior ▸▸ Most importantly, to provide a launching point to discuss ideas on how a child should behave if they want to be a positive contributor to society. The author and book were recently featured on BookDaily.com. “The Magic Fingers” is available on Amazon at https://smile.amazon.com/What-magicMagic-Fingers-read-together/dp/0692863613/ref=sr_1_1 ?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1510249034&sr=1-1&keyword s=THE+magic+fingers+michael+lambert. It is also available on Apple’s iBook. All sites give the book 5 stars! Check out the sites to read the reviews. Check out the website at http://www.themagicfingers.com/ for contact information.

Miramar’s Makers Market: An Artsy Affair for Unique Treasures BY HELEN PENLAND

▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

H

undreds came to explore this year’s Makers Market at the Town Center Plaza on October 21st. The event attracted over 300 people who were looking for unique, hand-made items that just might strike their fancy! The affair was held from 10am to 3pm. There were 32 fabulous Makers (vendors); nine were Miramar residents and/or businesses. The remaining vendors were from surrounding areas. There were designers, crafters, bakers, and other food vendors as well as do-it-yourselfers who showcased their goods at the event. Vendors were only required to register and pay $65 to cover the cost of their tables, chairs, and tents. Each vendor brought

14

his or her own table cover, flyers, other publicity materials, and banners. Some of the more well-known and interesting vendors included: Angela Osorio, a visual artist who allows her Colombian heritage to influence and inspire her art; Royal Court 4 Us, an Afro-Centric collection of hand crafted bracelets steeped in empowerment; and Geloka Accessories, two sisters who make hand-made accessories with unique materials. Sellers were of all ages. The youngest was 8-year old Bella who sold home-made chocolates. The types of items sold were an amazing assortment! They included: ▸▸ Hand-made soaps

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR

Art Candles Lotions and oils Custom/hand-crafted jewelry Baked goods from cinnamon rolls to s’mores Chocolates, and even Handbags and shoes! Throughout the entire event, they held workshops for children and teens from approximately 8-13 years old. They were both indoor and outside around the Makers Market area. The goal was to build up and encourage future “makers.” Workshops taught about sewing techniques, making jewelry, making soap, and much more. Natasha Hampton, Assistant City Manager of Employee and Public Relations said, “This is a testament to the community’s and neighborhoods’ commitment to the arts and interest in do-it-yourself craftsmanship. I’m proud to be a part of a community that supports the arts. Miramar strongly cultivates the cultural arts. Also, it inspires personal expression, improves personal and interpersonal relationships, and growth. Long-term, involvement in the arts improves public speaking and assists in the ability to make good decisions.” Even with intermittent rain, Makers Market vendors and visitors stayed throughout the entire day. And, buyers left with their new treasures with smiles on their faces!

Kiwanis Club Holds 25th Annual Adopt-a-Turkey Drive COMMUNITY NEWS

BY HELEN PENLAND

16

N

ovember marks Miramar Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club’s 25th annual Adopt-a-Turkey service project. The project goal is to provide local families in need along with a basket of non-perishables, including all the essentials to make a Thanksgiving dinner and enough to provide one week’s worth of food. To kick the project off, the club sponsored a food drive on October 29th and 30th at the Publix at Riverrun. According to Angie Font, there were 10 Kiwanians and five Key Club members from surrounding schools collecting donations. Key Clubs also collected food at their individual schools. This year they surpassed the Publix food drive of donations in 2016’s number by about 30%; last year they collected seven full carts of groceries. Ten carts were abundantly filled by generous people for the 2017 drive. At one point a group of firefighters from Miami went into the Publix and every one of them came out with a full bag of groceries to donate! For several years, the club included a turkey in the baskets they delivered. But Angie said, “Our donations grew and the logistics of storing that many turkeys was impossible. We just didn’t have the room.” So, their strategy changed. The club knew that Miramar is a very diverse city and not everyone celebrates a traditional American turkey dinner. Some celebrated with pork (or even cooked a whole pig), others prepared chicken, other fowl, or seafood. The club began selling “adoption certificates” and donations were also accepted online at the Kiwanis Club’s website. Donations were not only used to purchase non-perishable food, but to buy gift certificates to include in every box so families could apply it

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR

toward their preferred main dish. No perishables are now included. The list of non-perishable foods changed, too. Not only did they collect and buy for Thanksgiving-related meals and all the other “fixings,” but other food stuff as well. The list was long: soups, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, dried beans, tuna, boxed mashed potatoes, cornbread mix, and many other staples. This way they could fill boxes/baskets for people of many cultural backgrounds in addition to other basics. The entire project culminated in the packing event on November 25th at the Miramar FD fire station #70. Typically, the food is delivered by Miramar Social Services and Miramar PAL the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. However, this year the Club collected enough for 80 families. Social Services delivered to 40 families and the other 40 boxes were delivered by Kiwanians to families in the Douglas Gardens North complex. Angie stated, “We’re proud to have been running the Adopt-a-Turkey program for 25 years, and to serve more families every year thanks to the generosity of our neighbors and the hospitality of Miramar FD #70 for opening their home to us every year. Food insecurity is a constant problem in this country, and we are dedicated to helping to tackle the issue now and all year long.” The Miramar Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club new meeting times have changed. All meetings are at Bru’s Room Pines, every Wednesday at 12pm (except the 3rd Wed at 7pm). Go to their website at http://www.kiwanismiramarpines.com/ for more information.

New Puppy or Dog for a Holiday Gift? Read these Tips from an Expert First!

26

BY HELEN PENLAND

T

his month, expert dog trainer Dawn Hanna, CPDT-KA will be at the Miramar Library offering a free seminar on December 12th. In 2012, the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation adopted the “no kill” philosophy. The monthly seminars, held at different locations in the county, are a part of an endeavor to reduce the rate of pet surrenders. These one-hour sessions are designed for current dog and puppy owners, as well as those interested in adopting or buying one, and creating a positive environment for pet dogs. So, before bringing a dog or puppy into your home as a holiday gift, read the tips Dawn provided first. ▸▸ Don’t make any impulsive decisions. ▸▸ Don’t get a dog as a gift for ANYONE, even your own children. The person that makes the decision to obtain a dog should be responsible as the primary caregiver. ▸▸ Make sure you and your family have all the resources (time, money, patience, love) needed to provide a successful environment for a new pet. Dogs need regular veterinary care, training, good nutrition, exercise, enrichment, socialization, and a safe and loving home. ▸▸ Do research on the needs of different breeds. ▸▸ Never buy a pet from a retail store or online. Those animals come from commercial breeding facilities where the conditions are abusive and the animals

are NOT bred for temperament or health. ▸▸ Don’t take on a “project dog” (behavior issues/ health issues) unless you have spoken to an expert about what will be involved. You must be fully committed to help the animal live a good life. ▸▸ Make sure your entire family is on the same page. Our City Miramar asked Ms. Hanna some questions for further clarity. Here is the full Q&A. Q: If people decide to get a new animal, what breeds do you feel are the most family-friendly, best for the elderly, and best for single adults (maybe some who have a night life)? A: There is no simple answer to that. All potential dog owners should do research about breeds that would be compatible with their lifestyle. For example: ▸▸ Sporting and working breeds require lots of family time, exercise, and enrichment. ▸▸ Terriers are typically more independent, but also require significant enrichment and exercise. ▸▸ The specific needs of breeds come from years of selective breeding. ▸▸ Not all people will have a lifestyle that is compatible with dog ownership. Sometimes a plant would be a better choice. Q: Do you have any suggestions for changes new dog owners should make to their home prior to bring the pup/dog home? A: “Dog proof” your house. Here’s a blog on what

to do for the arrival of a puppy. http://www. dogtrainerinbroward. com/2017/02/12/newpuppy-3-ways-to-prepare-for-the-arrivalof-your-puppy-andyour-dog-trainer/ Q: What about meeting pets before bringing them home permanently? A: Yes, you should do a meet and greet with all family members and other pets, preferably under conditions that resemble what goes on at home. If you have kids that are very active and run in the house a lot, you need to see how the pet reacts to kids in their most active mode. Also, keep in mind that there is a certain amount of institutional behavior. The dog (or cat) may not exhibit its usual behaviors in the stressful environment of a shelter. Temperament testing is used to find out any obvious aggression, but is not necessarily a predictor of future behavior. For the schedule and more information about Dog Smarts 101, check out http://www.broward.org/ Animal/Resources/Pages/Dog-Smarts-101-Class.aspx. Dawn Hanna’s website also has many blogs about dog care at http://www.dogtrainerinbroward.com/

Aging and Your Eyes: Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD BY DR. MICHAEL CHESEN

D

EYE CARE

id you know that age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the foremost causes of vision loss in individuals over the age of 65? AMD is a condition that affects the macula of the retina which is responsible for clear central vision. Age Related Macular Degeneration Indications The first warning signs of AMD are often fuzzy vision and spots in the center of vision. Since the symptoms typically come on slowly without any pain, symptoms may not be detected until more severe vision loss is apparent. For this reason, it is very important to schedule a routine eye examination, particularly after the age of 65. What are the Risk Factors for Age Related Macular Degeneration? If you are of Caucasian decent, over 65 years of age, a smoker who consumes a diet low in nutrients or has family members that have had AMD, you are at higher risk of developing the disease. Any individual that is at increased risk should make certain to have a yearly eye exam. Discussing proper nutrition with your optometrist can also help lower your risk of developing AMD. Dry AMD and Wet AMD In general, AMD is typically diagnosed as either dry or wet. The dry form is found more frequently and may be a result of advanced age and macular tissue thinning or pigment build-up in the macula. The wet form is also known as neovascular age related macular degeneration. It results from the growth of new blood vessels beneath the retina, which leak blood that destroys the retinal cells and results in blind spots in the central vision. Often wet AMD is the more serious of the two. Macular Degeneration Treatment While there isn’t cure for AMD, certain treatments exist that can delay the progression. Depending on whether one has dry or wet macular degeneration, the course of treatment may involve laser surgery or medical injections or in some cases,

dietary supplements. In either case, early detection and treatment is essential. Dr. Chesen will also be able to recommend devices to help you deal with any visual difficulty that you have already sustained. Vision loss that cannot be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgical procedures is called low vision. There are a growing number of low vision devices that can be used today that can make everyday activities easier. You can save your vision by being aware of the risk factors and signs of AMD. Visit Dr. Michael Chesen to learn more about AMD and low vision. To make an appointment with Dr. Chesen, call 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Happy Holidays Miramarians! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

F

irst, Lady Angela and I want to wish everyone “Seasons Greetings”. The holiday season is one of our favorite times of year in the city. It is when we celebrate our religious and cultural traditions, and there is nothing better than visiting or hosting family and friends during this joyous occasion. One of the benefits of living in Miramar is that there is always something to do. The City of Miramar has a number of events during this month and I invite you all to participate. The Miramar Cultural Center will have a number of productions this year including Ballet Etudes’ The Nutcracker. Hopefully you and your family will be able to attend. Please visit www.MiramarCulturalCenter.org for complete listings of all the wonderful happenings at our fabulous Center. I would also like to provide a summary of our city’s accomplishments as presented during my annual State of the City Address. Miramar’s economy continues to strive. Did you know our city’s unemployment rate is only 3.7%? Did you know that over 1600 jobs averaging $70,000 per year are coming to our city? Pretty amazing when you consider it was only a few years ago that cities across the nation struggled to jumpstart their economies after the recession. I am happy to announce that not only has Miramar recovered but we are adding high paying jobs due to, for example, the arrival of Canada’s largest pharmaceutical company Apotex. Their US headquarters will be right here in Miramar investing over $185 million. Adding to our progress are our continued property valuations. For the third year in a row, Miramar has averaged 8% or higher in property value appreciation. What this means is that Miramar remains attractive for businesses, and our homes are in high demand. So, as we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and other cultural events during the holidays, let’s give thanks for our blessings and our successes. Our neighbors in the Caribbean and in this state, are still suffering from this past hurricane season. The holidays will be different for them this year. Let us all keep them in our prayers and send help whenever we can. It could have been Miramar but for Grace we were spared, and for that I give thanks. Happy Holidays!

Mayor Wayne Messam

SECTION REAL ESTATE HEAD

BY PATRICK SIMM

U

nbeknownst to many, the Real Estate Market shifted within the past year. The notion of putting your home up for sale and listing it at a higher price to “test the market” to see if you can get what you really desire tempts even the best of us. I recommend that you think twice prior to making this irrational decision. Research indicates that overpricing your home, while having to decrease the price one or more times while it languishes on the market frequently, leads to selling it at a much lower price than you would have if you had priced it correctly in the first place. The longer a home sits on the market, the more appeal it loses to potential buyers. Many homeowners have the tendency to follow their emotions rather than logic when setting the initial list price for the property. Their initial pricing decision is typically based on what they paid for their home, the current mortgage balance, the cost to upgrade or beautify the home, or the profit they need to net to buy or move to another home.

The truth of the matter is that your home is worth only what the market will bear at the time of selling. Pricing your home too high will deter a number of potential buyers from wanting to view it, while others will simply just walk away without making an offer. Simply, if your home is for sale and you have numerous potential buyers viewing it with no offers over a short period of time, it is either overpriced or in sub-par condition. The truth is that 80% of those buyers went on and chose to buy another property that is listed. In order to get to the correct pricing, a potential seller should involve the services of a Realtor - yes, a Professional Real Estate sales person! Potential “For Sale by Owners” may tend to disagree with the reasoning that we live in the age of information technology and anything and everything can be “Googled.” Realtors have access to additional and the most current information that simply cannot be “Googled.” They are the professionals! In choosing a Realtor to sell your home, one might be tempted to select the one who suggests the highest asking price for the property. Resist the temptation of selecting a Realtor based on pricing and the one who tells you only what you want to hear. The selection should be based on the Realtor who provides critical information which should include a current Comparative Market Analysis with a rational explanation of how your home should be priced in order to sell quickly and for the highest price possible. With the Real Estate Market currently feeling the effect of the most recent shift, it is highly recommended that sellers partner with a Realtor and listen to their advice. This should get your home sold for the highest price that the market will bear in the least amount of time possible, while saving you hassles and making the transaction a smooth one from the beginning. Your 2018 Resolutions

A

s the year comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health, or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions will include walking 10,000+ steps each day, cleaning up your diet, or spending more time with your children. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you answer the following: ▸▸ Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? ▸▸ After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I laid out a way forward to reach important family and financial goals? ▸▸ Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? ▸▸ Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? ▸▸ When and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement? Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! You should also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances, and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
