id you know there is an election this month? With the country and media so focused on national politics and the federal government’s handling of the coronavirus, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the national economy, it is easy to overlook this month’s primary election. In truth, local elections often have a larger impact on our day-to-day lives than national elections. This month’s primary elections give us the opportunity to select the candidates for Broward Public Schools Board, Florida Senate, Florida Congress, Broward County Sheriff, State Attorney, Broward Public Defender, and a number of circuit judges. The men and women elected to these positions will, in large part, determine how we are policed and protected, and how the state responds to the economic trauma we have endured. The election will be held on August 18th. Early voting begins on August 8th. If you are concerned about coronavirus exposure and have not requested a mail-in ballot, we recommend voting early in the morning during the early voting period. Get out the vote! It is your civic duty and a good thing to do.

Community Kitchen Feeds Over 1 Million People with State-of-the-Art Kitchen

F

eeding South Florida recently unveiled its new, state-of-the-art, 5,000-square-foot community kitchen. Although the kitchen is located in Palm Beach County, it will provide meals to nearly 1.3 million people in the four counties that Feeding South Florida serves (Palm Beach, Broward, MiamiDade, and Monroe Counties). The one-of-a-kind community kitchen is a highly anticipated community resource, with years in the making. On Sunday, July 12th, a virtual grand opening celebration took place via Zoom and Facebook Live. Viewers tuned in to view some of South Florida’s favorite chefs using their talents to showcase the kitchen’s full capacity. They prepared the very first meals in the kitchen using nutritious items regularly distributed by Feeding South Florida, converted into unique, savory, and creative dishes that appeal to the whole family. Chef Ralph Pagano of Naked Taco in Coconut Creek, and Chef Randy Fisher of CREaM in Miami hosted the event. The featured chefs were Chef Lindsay Autry of The Regional Kitchen & Public House in West Palm Beach, Chef Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s Consulting in Hollywood, and Chef Timon Balloo of Balloo Restaurant in downtown Miami. “This multi-purpose community kitchen is a vision that Feeding South Florida has had for quite some time, and we are so excited to finally present it to the community,” said Vélez. “This is just the beginning because the kitchen will serve the community by providing meals, workforce training, catering as social innovation, an incubator for community support, and family cooking classes.” The kitchen will advance Feeding South Florida’s mission of ending hunger in South Florida by serving up to 10,000 meals per day for children’s after-school and summer programs, meals for older adults, and medically tailored meals. The kitchen will also provide critical meals during disaster response. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Feeding South Florida has distributed over 40 million pounds of food (33.3 million meals) in the four counties it serves (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties) in 14 weeks a pace that translates to nearly 150 million pounds over a 12-month period. To put that in perspective, for the entire last fiscal year, Feeding South Florida distributed 62 million pounds (51.6 million meals). Feeding South Florida’s food distributions are updated daily and available at https://feedingsouthflorida.org/covid19/. Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Get State of the Art Air Purification Systems BY JON DUKA

N

ext time there is a competitive game of four-square at the local Boys and Girls Club, the kids might breathe a little bit easier. They won’t breath easier because the game will be less intense. They will breathe easier because the air they are breathing will be much cleaner. A group of local businesses, led by Air Conditioning Contractor, Air Pros USA,

donated and installed 150 Fresh-Aire UV light systems at 11 Boys and Girls Clubs across Broward County. The systems were installed directly into the central air systems by Air Pros USA technicians. UV light technology compliments air conditioning systems to improve indoor air quality by neutralizing viruses and other microbes as the air circulates through the ventilation system. UV light systems are tested and validated against surface bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus, and have been shown to achieve up to 99.999996% reduction on microorganisms. “The need for quality indoor air is more critical than ever. We are hopeful that our efforts to improve the air in these safe environments will help more families have the confidence to let children return to the clubs and take advantage of their amazing programs,” said Anthony

Perera, founder of Air Pros USA. “We are constantly working to make the clubs safe for children to pursue their passions and this donation gives us peace of mind that we will all be breathing cleaner air as we welcome back kids and teens,” said Matt Organ, co-CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County. “We’re thankful to Anthony and his partners for their generous contributions.” Breath easy, knowing the kids at the local club will be too.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Memory Care Guided By Positivity, Purpose And Passion: The Difference ‘Why Not?’ Makes BY: JON DUKA

A

s we look back over our lives, it’s our experiences, career paths and achievements that define who we are. Even our favorite pastimes become a part of our identities. But just as someone’s arthritis or diabetes shouldn’t define who they are, neither should their diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s may slowly erode a person’s memories and cognitive skills, but the core of a person’s identity and passions remain. They are still the unique individual they’ve always been, with likes and dislikes, and unique talents and wisdom to share. The details of the past—and the words to express them—might be harder to conjure up now, but the ability to be genuinely happy and purposeful in the moment is ever-present. Engagement is not only possible, it’s necessary to stave off further decline. So when it comes to memory care in a community setting, the delivery of daily care must be just as oneof-a-kind as the people receiving it. That’s the basic foundation of The Artis Way— the unwavering philosophy of Artis Senior Living. The Artis Way is their refreshingly different approach to memory care—as it is in their 24 purpose-built sister communities. When you change the way you operate from ‘we can’t do that!’ to ‘why not?’, amazing things happen! Each Artis community has a Director of The Artis

ingly impossible possible—an exceedingly unusual operating standard in the field of senior living and memory care. Artis Senior Living prides itself on the moments they’ve been able to create for memory care residents and their families. Here are a few: Ronald, a former baseball coach. He longed to play baseball again. So, the Artis staff transformed a portion of the community into an indoor baseball diamond, inviting residents, families and staff to play the bases with him. And Mary, an avid gardener. The Artis staff planted rose bushes outside her bedroom window. And veteran George, who was welcomed on move-in day by an honor guard, 15 National Guardsmen and local legislators, who presented him with a special coin. And Jacob, whose Alzheimer’s deprived him of his ability to speak. But that didn’t stop him from expressing his love for his wife on their 50th anniversary, when staff and residents gathered around them with signs exclaiming, “Happy Anniversary!” Artis Senior Living believes that you can treasure each person’s uniqueness with dignified, individualized Memory Care. Together, with residents and families, they complete an eight-page Partnership Profile—which the Artis team keeps on hand and uses to plan imaginative and meaningful experiences for that resident as often as possible. They try not to tell residents or their families ‘no’—unless it’s not safe. Benefits of Running with Orthotics A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well. Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of the shoe

W

hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury.

cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone. Co-Parenting in the Age of Covid-19 BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. nder normal circumstances, parents of school age children would be planning for the upcoming school term. The decisions that would need to be made would traditionally be school supplies, school clothes, uniforms, and perhaps after school care. The decisions that parents now need to make are obviously of much greater importance as they wrestle with the safety of traditional schooling. It seems that every other day a different plan is put forth. The anticipated school term affects not only plans for the children, but also planning for the parents. Some parents have been able to continue working from home, but not all parents have that ability. It presents a major issue that each family needs to resolve within their individual household. What if the parents are divorced and not part of the same household? How will these same decisions be made by two parents who sometimes cannot agree on much simpler issues? Who gets the final word in this situation? Most divorced parents are required to co-parent. This means that decisions concerning major issues are to be made by both parents working together for the best interests of the children. In most instances, neither parent gets the final say in these issues. Shared Parental responsibility requires joint decision making. In some cases, the Parenting Plan will allow one of the parents to have ultimate decision making on issues concerning education and/or medical care. This provision is not the norm, but rather the exception. So how do two parents who may not get along resolve crucial issues concerning their children? The concept of co-parenting suggests that even though the parents are no longer together, their love and concern for the children should not be affected. Not every happily married couple see “eye to eye” on every issue. However, they try to resolve it by negotiation and finally coming to a conclusion they both can live with. This concept should apply to divorced parents as well. Obviously, this ability to compromise is not always possible. There are other possible alternatives, but each require the assistance of a third party. The parents could go to counseling to “talk it out”. There are several co-parenting classes that the parties can either voluntarily attend or they may be required to attend by Court order. In some cases, a Parenting Coordinator or a Guardian Ad Litem might be involved. Of course, the last resort would be to file a motion and ask the Judge to decide where and how a child should attend school this Fall. I will tell you that Judges would much rather have the parents make this decision. I suggest that at a time like this you both focus on what is the best solution for the children and put any hostility to the side. This is a difficult time for everyone and if a child sees parents working together their stress level will be significantly lowered.

No Estate Plan? You Are Not Alone BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

Y

ou may be surprised to learn that 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of your property, the care and custody of your minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of your estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the State of Florida. So, in simpler terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the State will make all your decisions for you. Another surprising estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan, revise or update their documents every 19 years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 1999 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not.

Estate planning is often narrowly viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement, and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone. If you have minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse, and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, daycare, and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. If you have adult children, are you confident that your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Finally, do you own a small business? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you do have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? n Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. ASK THE EXPERT

Making Sense of Facial Rejuvenation BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, Feather lift, etc. The names go on and on but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. I will attempt to clarify this terminology with an explanation of facelift technique and indications. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As the skin ages there is a progressive loss of collagen and elastic which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways, lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle called the SMAS is tightened and the excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini – or short-scar facelift, can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure from a facelift. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. All of the procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Facial rejuvenation surgery can be performed safely and effectively under the correct circumstances. Don’t get caught up in the marketing tactics of “cosmetic” doctors who may not have the credentials or experience to perform injections or surgical procedures they advertise.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PEMBROKE PINES

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: MIRAMAR

August Update

My Fellow Miramarians,

BY FRANK C. ORTIS, MAYOR OF PEMBROKE PINES ear Readers: With our focused attention on COVID-19 and all that entails, our summer months have flown by and August is already upon us. Parents and students must begin contemplating and preparing for changes to the new school year which begins on August 19. The Broward County School Board has the formidable task of balancing the needs, wants and risks of everyone involved. Parents are split as to what should be done, and the only factor that is certain is that school officials want students on campus as much as safety permits. At the time of this writing, it is still uncertain as to the path that will be taken. Should students return to their classrooms and school buses are once again on ourroads, I ask that you follow bus safety regulations and please follow all school zone postings. We are also still right in the midst of hurricane season, and I cannot stress enough that we all remain vigilant and prepared. Please visit www.ppines.com/hurricane for helpful information. Small business is the backbone of the Pembroke Pines economy and our local businesses need our support more than ever due to the impacts of the COVID -19 pandemic. According to PoweringFlorida.com, 94% of Pembroke Pines businesses have 19 or fewer employees. So how can residents help our local businesses and still maintain the CDC safety protocols in place? Here are several ways to support local companies: ▸  Order take out or delivery from your favorite restaurants, ▸  Buy gift cards to inject cash into local companies, ▸  Shop local businesses online instead of going to Amazon. Even if you do not have extra income to spend locally, there are ways you can provide support such as writing a positive review about a local business online or follow the business on social media and sharing their posts. It even helps to tell your friends and family about a company that provides great service or products. Most of all, please be patient and say thank you. We are all in this together, and together we will make Pembroke Pines better than ever before. Due to the pandemic, many city events and activities have been cancelled or postponed. Please continue to check status on the city’s website at www.ppines.com and on our social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. As always be safe, stay healthy, and wear a mask. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fotis@ppines.com

BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR pray that all is well with you and your families during this COVID-19 environment. We are truly living in unstable times with the coronavirus. South Florida continues to be a hot spot for positive cases of COVID19. Although our city’s positive cases are far below cities like Ft. Lauderdale, , and Pompano Beach, Miramar has nearly 2000 people who have tested positive. Our data has confirmed that this surge can be attributed to noncompliance to wearing masks and the re-opening of the state prior to meeting the gating recommendations of the CDC. To do our part in keeping Miramar safe, I implore all of us to practice social distancing of 6 feet and wear a mask whenever you are in public to protect yourself, and anyone you may come in contact with. In addition to complying with CDC guidelines, testing is critical to keep Miramar safe. As the pandemic began to impact our state. Miramar for months did not have a testing site of our own. Through a lot of effort and lobbying, I was successful in opening testing sites for our residents. Working with Governor Desantis’s office, Miramar was granted a Walk-up COVID-19 testing site at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center, 7000 Miramar Parkway. This site is open to the public, free of charge and no appointment is needed. Results are given 48-72 hours. CVS Pharmacy Drive-thru located at 12401 Miramar Parkway. Patients must register in advance at CVS.com. Tests will be sent to an independent, third-party lab for processing and the results will be available in approximately three days. This site was made possible as a result my engagement with Aetna/CVS to bring additional testing to our city. Two other nearby sites are located at the CB Smith Park and Hardrock Stadium. If you or someone you know has been exposed to the COVID-19 virus please feel free to visit the many conveniently located testing sites in or near Miramar. With COVID-19 consuming so much attention, locally and nationally, I remind everyone to participate in the FY 2020-2021 Budget Hearings scheduled later this month. I am pleased to announce that the City Commission has set the ceiling for this year’s Millage Rate to be no higher than this year’s Millage Rate. The Budget Hearings will either keep the same tax rate or it will be lower. Your engagement in the process is critical to ensure that the services that you need are provided. Visit www.miramarfl.gov for meeting times. I invite you to join my bi-weekly “Conversations with Mayor Wayne Messam” series that is now completely virtual joined every time by top experts in the field. The series has been incredibly popular covering a range of topics from Education and Business to Hurricane Preparedness and Voting. These Facebook LIVE events are free webinars provided as a resource of helpful credible knowledge during this crucial time. Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are

gun ranges and stores frequently dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. Not only will our ventilation system protect you from the toxic byproducts of shooting, but the HEPA filtration and laminar air flow are also superb at affording protection from the respiratory droplets of COVID-19. The air pumped into the range is actually cleaner than the air outside, so shooting with us is actually one of the safer activities you can enjoy during the pandemic. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot
